00:00Who was going to boycott Uttarakhand?
00:03The debate has now split social media into two camps.
00:06We are mountains. We can't die.
00:09Those defending Uttarakhand and those calling for a boycott,
00:13all tracing back to this incident.
00:18It started in Rishikesh, where a group of young men from Haryana
00:22were accused of misbehaving with a local woman,
00:24after which the locals confronted the group and what followed turned violent.
00:28The men were beaten and their vehicles were vandalized.
00:31Soon, videos from the scene began circulating online.
00:34Within hours, the internet had turned it into something much bigger.
00:38Hashtag Boycott Uttarakhand began trending.
00:45Soon, influencers from Haryana stepped in,
00:48posting videos alleging that tourists with HR number plates
00:51were being unfairly targeted in Uttarakhand.
00:54Some called for a complete boycott of Uttarakhand's tourism industry,
00:57arguing that visitors from Haryana were being singled out
01:00because of their vehicle registrations.
01:02You see, the HR 27 number,
01:03that they are doing there,
01:05it looks very bad because the big car is also HR 27.
01:07A video, claimed to have been shot in Delhi,
01:10though its authenticity has not been independently verified,
01:13showed a group of men confronting a cab driver from Daeradun
01:16in a parking area.
01:17In the clip, the men are seen warning the driver
01:20that Uttarakhand registered vehicles should stop operating around the airport
01:23and accepting ride bookings from the area.
01:26The video was widely shared by users,
01:28claiming the dispute was now affecting people beyond Uttarakhand.
01:31Then, Himachal Pradesh entered the frame.
01:36A separate video from Shimla showed tourists from Haryana allegedly smoking hookah
01:41and violating public rules in a restricted area.
01:43As the clip went viral,
01:45some Himachal-based users joined the online debate
01:47with a section of social media posts warning Haryana tourists
01:51against visiting Himachal as well.
01:52What had started as an Uttarakhand-Haryana dispute
01:55was now being framed online as a broader conflict
01:58between hill states and visitors from the neighbouring plains.
02:07Political leaders called for restraint,
02:10urging people not to blame entire states
02:12and reminding visitors to respect local laws and culture.
02:16Police say the issue was never about number plates or state identities.
02:19Social media, however, seems to have decided otherwise.
