The Last Captains - Season 2 Episode 4 - Lobster Crossfire
Transcript
00:08You going here next?
00:09Yeah.
00:10We're crapping, man.
00:12Crapping for lobsters.
00:14It's the 150th setting day for the Magdalene Island,
00:17so it's going to be this whole big shindig, I'd imagine.
00:24This is like the busiest day of the year,
00:26and everybody is so anxious.
00:31It's the 150th anniversary of the lobster fishery
00:34on the Magdalene Islands.
00:36Marking 150 years nails down
00:39that this is the backbone of the islands.
00:43Let's go.
00:45Holy, this one's heavy.
00:47Tomorrow's setting day.
00:49We're going to take all the trawls that we have
00:51and throw them out in the water to catch lobsters.
00:53I'm going to pull the rope.
00:54Don't touch nothing.
00:56It's something that makes you feel anchored to the place,
00:59knowing that this was the same industry
01:02that your ancestors worked in.
01:04And we want it to continue for a long time.
01:08I usually start here.
01:09Yeah, yeah, yeah.
01:10It's pretty neat that we're still here doing the same thing.
01:13Hailer test, hailer test.
01:14You hear me, Jesse?
01:15Yep.
01:16You load a couple numbers.
01:17Anybody hear ya?
01:18Blue, 42.
01:20Okay, good stuff.
01:22I love fishing.
01:23I'm privileged to be out there.
01:25How many trawls is on this?
01:26Three?
01:27Yeah.
01:28Early May.
01:29Everybody's getting the boats ready.
01:31I see the fish ship.
01:33How you doing?
01:34Nice to see you.
01:35Good seeing you.
01:35You too, Nancy.
01:36Don't be shy.
01:37Come coast.
01:38It's all lobster, lobster, lobster.
01:40And everybody's part of it.
01:42Let us pray for clean and abundant waters,
01:45and for ourselves as stewards of the seas.
01:49May those who move upon the face of the waters
01:51rejoice in its beauty,
01:53and find safety in its perils.
01:56You're both down there?
01:57There's a bunch of different fisheries here.
02:00We ask God's blessing on good ship, moon ship,
02:03and William, her captain.
02:04But lobster is the most important.
02:07Thank you very much, Bruce.
02:08Did you get your Barbie doll?
02:09Yes, I did.
02:10Well, then.
02:12There's a lot going on tomorrow.
02:14It's a pretty important day.
02:16Probably the most stressful day of the year, for sure.
02:20A lot can go wrong.
02:29First day jitters.
02:32That's that old lobster fisherman anxiety.
02:36Today's the big day.
02:37Go day today.
02:39Get her chap set here.
02:40Hopefully without any problems.
02:43New crew.
02:44So, see what he can do.
02:46Yeah.
02:47Setting day, you get people from all over the island
02:50that come here.
02:51So, yeah, it's pretty big.
02:53You want to go see your pap?
02:54Yep.
02:54All the wives and the kids
02:55and even some tourists this time of year.
02:58Okay, see ya.
02:59Be careful.
03:00Yeah, see ya.
03:01All right.
03:03It's a small community,
03:05and I think most people that live here,
03:09you're holding on to something that feels dear
03:12or feels precious to you.
03:17Ah, there's the fireworks.
03:19But for some people, you need more.
03:23Tradition is quite important to a lot of people,
03:27but things have changed a lot in the lobster industry
03:31compared to what we did back then.
03:34Myself, I try to adapt and change.
03:38Change doesn't happen quickly here,
03:41but some people, they need change,
03:43and there can be resistance to that.
03:47Shit show's about to start, man.
04:07I think I just saw it.
04:10It's 5 a.m., and the 150th lobster fishing season
04:15on the Magdalene Islands.
04:17Super on our way.
04:19Is a go.
04:21Let's go make some money.
04:24Pray everybody has a good setting day.
04:27Around the island's north end,
04:29over 150 heavily loaded vessels jockey for position,
04:34all vying to be first out of the gates.
04:38We're all loaded with traps.
04:40Everyone's trying to cross and zigzag
04:42and cut through each other.
04:43It's just a big rat race, really.
04:47Oh, hey.
04:50I've become quite hectic in there sometimes.
04:53The quicker you get there, the easier it is
04:55to get your traps off.
05:00What a lineup of boats, man.
05:11There's Adam.
05:15That's Steven here, isn't that?
05:17Yeah.
05:18Yeah, it is, buddy.
05:25Behind the pack here now.
05:26We're going to try to catch up.
05:28For sure you want to get there first.
05:3013 knots.
05:32Nobody wants to go behind anyone else all the time.
05:34Well, well, well, well, well.
05:36Trapped in the bottleneck of boats,
05:39Captain Adam is taking a beating.
05:40Holy mother.
05:44So you've got thousands of horsepower here.
05:47When the other guys give it full throttle.
05:5019 knots, man.
05:52It can be very, very scary.
05:59Jeez.
06:00That's why you've got to be first,
06:02so you don't have to deal with this.
06:05Everyone's overloaded,
06:06and then your boat just does not handle well.
06:09Wow.
06:14Is that there a roll from all the boats,
06:16or is that a roll?
06:17That's all the boats, man.
06:21You're getting two big waves on each side,
06:23and it's just dangerous.
06:28Adam coming here right beside you barreling.
06:33Oh, boy.
06:38Watch us here on the port side, guys.
06:45Jeez.
06:46Ooh.
06:49Dangerous as .
06:53Anyone there behind us?
06:56There's more behind us than in front of us now.
07:01Oh, my God.
07:02What a mess.
07:04Oh, .
07:05Oh, .
07:09We're catching up there.
07:11We're making our way to the front there now.
07:13Lobster fishing on the Maggies is a nine-week season.
07:18Captains can fish every day except Sundays.
07:2154 days in total and no quota on catches.
07:26Yeah.
07:27Looks like a hustler.
07:29The race is to get gear on the ground
07:32and stake territory near the home harbor.
07:37At our end of the island, we have two main fishing harbors.
07:41You have Grand Entry.
07:43That harbor has the boats that fish on the south side.
07:48And then you have a harbor in Grozeal.
07:51Those are the north side boats.
07:56We still want to pass the ownership here.
07:58The Magdalenes are one fishing zone.
08:01But tradition states captains are to stick to territory
08:04in the grounds nearest their home harbors.
08:07There are unwritten rules.
08:10If you're a north side boat,
08:12you're supposed to stick to north side fishing grounds.
08:17If you're a south side boat,
08:20there are fishing grounds on the south side.
08:23It's all zone 22 lobster,
08:25but that's kind of like the rule the fishermen have.
08:28Sometimes people attempt to cross over,
08:31but there would be consequences.
08:35Where are we going to?
08:37We're going to no man's land.
08:41Steven and Adam are south siders,
08:43hunting for grounds around Grand Entry Harbor.
08:46I like fishing solo.
08:48I like to find a spot just by myself.
08:53Hello?
08:54Where were you two?
08:56I don't know, man.
08:58Tradition is quite important to a lot of people.
09:02Myself?
09:03Not really, man.
09:05My traditions make sure the boat's loaded
09:08and pretty much go home.
09:09I'll see you tomorrow.
09:15Where I normally fish is just really overrun with boats
09:19these past couple of years.
09:22Ah!
09:26I can see like six or seven boats ahead of me,
09:29another 15 behind me,
09:31and I just keep thinking about last year
09:33and all the tangles and pulls and cutting the trawls.
09:38Everybody wants to fish alone,
09:39but that doesn't really happen in this game, man.
09:44I'm not dealing with that this year.
09:45I'm just going to try something completely different.
09:50Ah, that.
09:51My little bird rock.
09:54Yeah.
09:56We'll see.
09:59The Northsiders and Southsiders are separated by bird rock,
10:03a bird sanctuary 20 miles from shore.
10:06It is the dividing line between two harbors,
10:09split right down the middle.
10:13But Stephen is heading to the zone traditionally fished
10:16by the Northsiders.
10:17Bird rock's here.
10:19This is a bird rock reef.
10:22You ever sat there before?
10:24Never.
10:25Probably regret it.
10:27I'm going to bird rock for the first day.
10:30I know by me switching over to the North side,
10:33that's probably going to ruffle some feathers.
10:36Set somewhere different this year.
10:40That's just the chance I'm willing to take.
10:43Well, I guess bird rock's not going to be all south side.
10:45I pray it doesn't end any friendships over it.
10:49You know, it's fishing's fishing.
10:50We're all into the same business here,
10:52but it is what it is.
10:56Yeah, we could regret it.
10:59Stephen went north.
11:00Crazy son of a bitch.
11:03Gambling this year.
11:07Yeah.
11:08Gonna be different.
11:17Oh, yeah.
11:18Here we go.
11:22It's setting day on the Magdalene Islands,
11:25and lobster captains are in a frantic sprint
11:28to get their 273 traps down to the floor of the Gulf of St. Lawrence.
11:3714.
11:42Watch your feet. Watch your feet.
11:44Yep.
11:44On the south side, Kevin Clark and the Emma Joan are staking their claim.
11:54It's my uncle Dwight there, Tammy and May, and my other uncles in the yellow boat there.
12:01Traditionally, my father and his father and his father all fish from Old Harry on those same fishing grounds.
12:08Yeah, I found the end here.
12:10After leading his own crab boat, Kevin has surrendered the captain's chair to his father, Sidney.
12:17So, is that the first buoy?
12:19That's the first buoy, yeah.
12:20I know he's been at it for over 50 years himself, and it's a hard thing for him to let
12:26go, and I completely understand that.
12:32Ready?
12:33What's your first trap?
12:39On the far edge of the southern grounds, Kevin's older brother Adam has broken away from the pack.
12:47Let your second one go.
12:50I always like fishing alone.
12:53You're good.
12:55I just don't like fishing around boats, and I don't enjoy tangles.
13:01No boats on the radar here, so I think we're going to be free.
13:05Free of visitors.
13:07A father and son team manned the deck of the Miss Sophia Daisy, Adam's 16-year-old nephew Liam, and
13:15Liam's father, Aaron.
13:17Dad, do you need me back there?
13:19Yeah, I think we'll take Liam back here now, Adam.
13:21Yeah.
13:23After surviving his first crab campaign earlier this spring.
13:28Keep your feet on the washboard.
13:31Grab the trap.
13:33Liam is back lobster fishing, with some hard-earned experiences from last season.
13:39This is Liam's second year setting day, I do believe.
13:42That must be the end buoy for this trawl.
13:44That's number 30.
13:45Yeah, it's 30 there.
13:47Dad used to help me do everything.
13:49Now he just kind of watches me.
13:51Now I know how to do everything on day.
13:54See what's left there?
13:55Yeah.
13:55No wonder if Stephen's in yet.
14:06Is that Bird Rock?
14:07That's Bird Rock.
14:09After escaping the mass of boats on the south side, Stephen has crossed the line, arriving on the north side
14:17of Bird Rock.
14:19New ground, new set. I never sat here on the first day before, so...
14:23Bird Rock is an isolated and unforgiving reef where few dare to go early in the season.
14:30We don't necessarily know if there's any lobsters. Things can change over winter, but...
14:36Gotta risk it to get the biscuit, man.
14:42This is my first year I've ever finished crab before lobster, so I'm pretty ecstatic about it, really.
14:50Are you guys ready?
14:51Yeah.
14:52Let her go if you're ready.
14:54Good.
14:56Normally I'd be always trying to just pull my gear up, just have it as close as possible in one
15:03area, just so I could kind of fish it as fast as possible.
15:06But this year I'm able to kind of go adventuring, I guess you can say.
15:17You can do whatever you want, really, because your license is Zone 22, but you'll probably lose a bit of
15:22respect if you, you know, play around with it.
15:27I think people feel if they've always fished in a certain area, they don't really like it if people that
15:33didn't always fish there go in that area.
15:36It's frowned upon to jump from harbour to harbour every year, but people are doing it more and more all
15:41the time.
15:42It just makes a mess and a lot of friction between fishermen.
15:46Yeah.
15:50Eighteen gone.
15:51Everybody sticks to their own side or their own harbour. It's been like that forever.
15:58The crow's eel boats definitely ain't going to be happy. We'll see how it goes.
16:05Sixteen gone.
16:07I just want to fish peacefully, man. I don't want to be in a rush.
16:13The last one.
16:21Yeah. Now we're going to head home.
16:28With all his traps in the water, Steven checks in with Adam.
16:32What's up?
16:34Everything, uh, you never got no calls on the radio?
16:37No, everything went good so far anyway. I don't know. I can't see them being too happy about it.
16:43I just kind of stayed at my own thing there.
16:47Not much else you can do. It could work or it could burn me.
16:52Nobody knows until you know. We'll find out Monday if it worked or didn't.
16:57I didn't figure we made any friends today by any means.
17:00I wouldn't say so.
17:08Hope there's not too many boats and see from there, I guess.
17:12Further north, Captain Steve Burke stakes claim to his traditional fishing turf.
17:18I'll just stick to my same old grounds I've had now for the last 15 years.
17:22Do my thing here.
17:25You ain't really excited.
17:28Today will be trialed by fire for his new crew.
17:31I got a French guy from west, Alexis Boudreaux.
17:34Do you want me to run back there and start to get ready?
17:36Uh, yeah, I'll follow her back.
17:40I'm not sure if he works the same way that I'm used to working.
17:42We'll see, I guess.
17:45It's a nervous day.
17:47Jesse's coming back for his second season.
17:48He's pretty scary around a lot of ropes.
17:51Hope these guys pan out.
17:53Jesse, you stayed halfway back, all right?
17:55Yeah.
17:56I'm not gonna break any lands going back.
17:58Yep.
17:59Probably still got another five minutes yet, though.
18:00But you guys get back and get set.
18:01Just keep an eye on him going back.
18:03Okay, will ya?
18:03Yep.
18:04With new crew, you're always gonna be watching them and make sure they're doing it right.
18:08Liam's legacy is stacked with traps four rows high.
18:13One false step could send a deckhand overboard.
18:23Man, you're not very agile.
18:27Careful, Jesse.
18:28Yep.
18:30You good?
18:31Yeah.
18:32Stay halfway there.
18:34I can't see what's going on back there, so I have to have a speaker if we can talk to
18:38them.
18:39Okay, talk to me, guys.
18:40How's it going there?
18:41Good to go.
18:42It's almost ready to go.
18:43Give me one minute.
18:45Can you translate for me, Jesse?
18:47He can't hear me.
18:49He needs another minute.
18:51Oh, I don't like this waiting.
18:53Every captain has their own way of doing things.
18:56I like to work fast instead of taking my time.
19:00Not yet.
19:01Give me one second.
19:03Okay, they gotta go when I break the horn, ready or not.
19:05You gotta pull them off the stack if you have to.
19:08Want me to help?
19:09Got it.
19:10You won.
19:12You good?
19:13Yep.
19:15Steve is eager to get his traps on the ocean floor before the competition arrives.
19:21It's so much easier to get them off before everyone gets here.
19:25It saves a lot of zigzagging.
19:27Make sure you don't run over anyone else.
19:29Are you ready?
19:30Yes or no.
19:32The faster they get in the back on the bottom, the faster they start fishing.
19:35And I want to get in for my other business to help Tanya out the bait and stuff, so.
19:40When he's not on water, Captain Steve runs the busiest bait shop ashore.
19:45Go on here.
19:46Work here.
19:47Don't leave very often.
19:49Some people say, why don't you go to Florida or somewhere in the winter?
19:52We're surrounded here by beaches.
19:54Why would I go all the way to Florida?
19:55I sit on the beach.
19:56My other job was to sell bait here to the fishermen.
20:02It's pretty much harder than fishing really.
20:04Today we just had a full load of Spanish mackerel.
20:09Together with his wife Tanya.
20:11Watch your feet.
20:13They supply most of the bait needs for captains on the north side of the islands.
20:18Husband and wife doing that's the goal of the day is not getting to fight.
20:22So far so good.
20:24Probably have like 40 or 50 regular customers and we're picking up a few every year and getting bigger every
20:29year.
20:30After years of trial and error, squabbles and fights.
20:34Thank God Tanya has lots of patience.
20:37Can you help there or what?
20:40The first couple of years we were all over the place there.
20:43But after a few years we got things settled out good there and everything's better now.
20:48Hopefully Monday these will be all gone and sold.
20:50We got things figured out pretty good.
20:52Hold on, hold on a back rack. Here.
20:54A little bit higher. Easy.
21:00Good.
21:01High five.
21:06I think I hit too many teams this morning. I'm all on edge.
21:09Back on water, the captain is itching to wrap up setting day.
21:15This side right?
21:16I think it's going to be the middle one.
21:18Yeah, this one right here.
21:19Yeah.
21:20Two young men back there. There's no reason why they can't be throwing traps off.
21:23Right in the water.
21:25Do what we have to do and don't screw around any longer when we have to.
21:30But his new crew needs some time to gel.
21:33Number 15 now.
21:35One five.
21:35Number five.
21:36Five.
21:36Oh, five. Sorry.
21:40If I could just get through the season without any major breakdowns or anyone getting hurt.
21:45That's the main thing.
21:47Oh, it's still tight on?
21:48Oh, yeah.
21:49This is a long season, nine weeks.
21:50It could change pretty quick.
21:53All right.
21:54All right.
22:02Sunrise, baby.
22:04Such a beautiful morning.
22:08First day of lobster fishing.
22:11Everyone will be oak today.
22:13It's day one of lobster fishing on the Magdalene Islands.
22:17I honestly think the water's too cold.
22:20They haven't woken up yet.
22:23I'm crossing my fingers that everyone does really well where they're at and everyone stays put.
22:28Because when people are doing good, they don't go looking right.
22:32Pretty cold this morning, huh?
22:34Yeah.
22:35The lack of ice on the surface has allowed for the season to start a week early.
22:40But that comes at a price.
22:43You know, the water's probably going to be colder.
22:45And the lobsters are probably going to be harder to catch.
22:4912 plus 22.
22:5132, 34.
22:5334!
22:56This was a hot spot last year.
22:59Wasn't too many in that.
23:02Uh, there's only six.
23:06We all hit our better seasons when we started later for here on the north side of the islands anyways.
23:10Every year is new.
23:11Not very good.
23:14Catches are down.
23:15Water's colder.
23:17Nothing going for us right now.
23:20Further south.
23:22The ocean's pretty cold, wet, lumpy and bumpy and holey and bouncy and poundy.
23:30An indicator that the season may be kicking off too early.
23:34Look here, these are fleas.
23:35Look.
23:36Look at, look what's on that bag.
23:38Oh!
23:39That's what I'm talking about.
23:41Fleas are here, her core.
23:42Small crustaceans, sea fleas, have infested Adam's bait.
23:48Normally when you see the fleas cleaning your bait right off, you know, the water's still pretty cold.
23:54But for Adam, the cold might not be bad news.
23:58First one's not bad, but still got many more to go.
24:03He's hoping cooler temperatures will keep the lobsters deep, where his traps are.
24:09My zone's a pretty deep zone, so when the water temperatures are cold, it benefits me.
24:16And the first signs are promising.
24:19I'm happy.
24:20You don't want to do too good, because when you do too good, that's when you get visitors.
24:26I came out of here because there's nobody, right?
24:28Good results on day one.
24:31But the captain wants to keep a lid on his secret spot.
24:37If you're quiet about things, it kind of buys you more time by yourself, right?
24:41I think the only reason that we're doing all right is because we're alone, probably.
24:47You'd have every one of those boats out there where we're at.
24:50Just like that, if they knew.
24:53That's why I just don't...
24:54I'm not a soul, no one.
24:58I'm not a f***ing soul.
25:08Have a nice feeling.
25:09Across the islands, everyone is trying to stay off the radar.
25:14I was trying to maintain radio silence.
25:17No, hold on that one, man. Let's go.
25:20He sounds like he's having a heart attack, man.
25:23The Deep Insider is one of five boats that's crossed into the north,
25:27and brought more attention than the captains wanted.
25:30You can't blame them for being kind of pissed off that we're here for sure,
25:34but everybody has a right to fish.
25:37Everybody has the same license. It's all the same zone.
25:40You don't own the water, so...
25:43What can you do about it, man?
25:45I'm not the first boat to come around to the north side,
25:48and I definitely won't be the last.
25:53One north side boat in particular does not like Steven's encroachment.
25:58This is our ground. They shouldn't be here.
26:01Me and Steven are friendly with each other.
26:04The first time I ever captained a boat, Steven, was my deckhand.
26:10But switching around from one side or the other is opening up a can of worms that shouldn't be opened.
26:17Half of our own boats aren't out here yet.
26:19There's no room for them guys here.
26:23We're gonna blast by them than earlier.
26:26Yeah.
26:30William sets the moonshift to full throttle.
26:34Let him know that I know he's here.
26:35Mmm.
26:45That's great.
26:50Whoo!
26:52Wash the windows and deck a little bit.
26:56Can't believe he did that.
26:58That's insane.
27:02You can't focus on that, just go fish, man.
27:07Things get a little hostile sometimes.
27:10I hope to not lose any friendships over this, you know?
27:13But it is what it is, man.
27:17First couple days of the season, like, if the catches are down,
27:19like, everyone's a little on edge, right?
27:21Shitty weather, price, catches, a lot of things.
27:26One thing about this racket, you let every little thing bother you,
27:30you overthink it too much, it never leaves more.
27:45Foggy, foggy. Very foggy this morning.
27:48The first week of lobster season on the Magdalene Islands is almost over.
27:54It's gonna be miserable today, man.
27:56It's just gonna be kind of a hateful day.
28:01And the weather has taken a turn for the worse.
28:05Fishing in the fog is way harder.
28:07You gotta be paying attention all the time.
28:10Just watching your man, watching buoys, watching the tide,
28:14watching for other boats.
28:16It's hard on the head.
28:18It's pretty black foggy here now.
28:21It's pretty windy.
28:22I prefer wind than fog.
28:24Wind, you can see what you're doing.
28:26Fog is just a pain in the ass.
28:27A lot more dangerous for sure.
28:32This is not ideal for the guy behind the wheel or the guy on deck.
28:36It's just not pleasant.
28:38One of those days where you don't want to be a decking
28:41and you don't want to be a captain.
28:45I hate the fog, man.
28:49First one was shit.
28:51Second one's better.
28:53So, we'll see.
28:57You're trying to set your gear, you're running your trap off,
29:00and then just a buoy pops up out of the fog.
29:03There's nothing going on here.
29:06You're over top of them.
29:07We're tangled up with them.
29:09It's just...
29:10The fog is hateful.
29:11I'd rather fish in the wind than in the fog.
29:14Yeah, we're gonna get a few bad trawls on the server.
29:23One thing good about fog, other boats can't see it.
29:27Captain Adam is using Mother Nature to his advantage.
29:30Nice lobster here today.
29:32Wow.
29:33Hiding in the fog to protect his secret spot
29:36that is paying big dividends.
29:38It's always good to keep your things to yourself.
29:41The lobsters are not all over the flat rock,
29:44because they're down, down, down, in the crevices.
29:52I think you should think like a lobster.
29:54It smells bait a lot.
29:57Let's check his depth of water here, Leo.
30:02137 feet.
30:03Dropping his traps over 130 feet down,
30:07Adam has found lobsters seeking refuge from the cold.
30:11Look at the size of them, Leo.
30:12The lobsters are here, I guess.
30:14They arrived.
30:16That depth seems to be where your best trawls are.
30:18Right along those ridges?
30:21Yeah, but he can't tell anyone that.
30:27But on the Magdalene Islands...
30:29I see a boat.
30:31...there are no secrets.
30:33He's going this way.
30:35You've got your leaders and you've got your followers.
30:38He's scared and you're out, man.
30:42You can never keep things secret for very long.
30:45Rival boats can ping the bottom, steal Adam's depth, and hijack the grounds.
30:50You just go over my trawls and you're on the water net.
30:55Yeah, it really sucks that he did that.
30:57There's all kinds of places he can try and that.
31:01I had to scrap a lot of trawls just to find the lobsters.
31:06All the work and then you can just get the reward out of it, you know?
31:11Nothing lasts forever.
31:16You don't shut your lights off today.
31:18As the fog keeps rolling in...
31:21You'll hear the boat before you see it.
31:23Yeah.
31:23It's a fear out of the blue.
31:25The north side is starting to get crowded.
31:28Look at all the boats here.
31:30Six or seven boats, all one ball.
31:34It's hard to tell who's who anymore now.
31:37Different traps, different people coming.
31:39And with more boats around...
31:43Tempers are starting to flare.
31:45Someone just took four traps off my trawl.
31:51All my buckets and rubber is still on the road.
31:54It's downright dirty.
31:56Can't imagine anyone would do that.
32:01Just here for years, there's absolutely no trouble.
32:05Can someone do that to you?
32:07Somebody caught four traps off his trawl.
32:10Most likely on purpose, I would say, by the looks of that.
32:14I don't know what kind of dirty you showed up here to fish here,
32:16but you better get the crap where you come from,
32:19because you're not real fishermen.
32:20That's just really kind of stealing from another man.
32:23Like, that's...
32:24That's just dirty and terribly disrespectful,
32:27but it happens.
32:28Sadly, it does happen in this game.
32:31I'd like to see us not get affected by it,
32:33but I know that ain't gonna happen.
32:34Oh, that's not gonna happen at all.
32:36Everyone's gonna...
32:37Everyone's gonna take it out on us now.
32:39They don't care.
32:40I don't know who did it or why they did it,
32:42but all I know is it wasn't us.
32:45It won't ever be us either.
32:49You don't do that to another fisherman, man.
32:52Yeah, four traps are pretty dirty.
32:55Came over here to fish easier,
32:57and more boats that come makes it harder for them.
32:59So I can totally understand them being frustrated
33:03that we're coming around.
33:06Yeah, hard to love a fisherman, eh, Josh?
33:09Oh, yeah.
33:10Somebody's gotta feed the world, man.
33:13We gotta feed the people of the world
33:15so we can feed ourselves.
33:17Isn't that something?
33:19Talk about a dog-eat-dog world.
33:24Who am I?
33:26I don't know.
33:28More trouble is on the horizon for Captain Steven.
33:32You're coming right for us.
33:34You'll definitely not always know what to expect on the water.
33:38You don't know what's gonna happen, right?
33:42Who am I?
33:44I don't know.
33:45In the hostile waters of the north side...
33:48Here's coming right for us.
33:49...a boat is heading straight for the deep insider.
33:54What?
33:55You don't know if somebody would be pulling up to you
33:57to crack a joke or give you a cursing or ask you for help.
34:01You don't know what's gonna happen, right?
34:03What's gonna happen, right?
34:06What's gonna happen?
34:10The other captain, one of Steven's childhood friends.
34:14I'm going back over that way.
34:15Too hostile in here.
34:17We're all from the same area.
34:19We all grew up together, you know?
34:21It is what it is, but you're still gonna be considered
34:25the new guy on the block.
34:27I thought he was coming aboard to me, man.
34:29I'm not expecting any sympathy or anything from anybody.
34:34All right, dude. All right, boys.
34:35Let's go.
34:37Let's go.
34:39Fishing is quite the battle sometimes.
34:42You're battling the weather, the competition.
34:45Like, you know, you're battling other people.
34:47Just so many, so many things, man.
34:58Steven returns to his southern base.
35:01Feels kind of odd.
35:03Like, it's almost like, you know, it makes you kind of uneasy in a way.
35:08News of his crossing to the north side is rippling through the community.
35:14Nobody waves when they pass by, like, or nothing.
35:17No friends around, either.
35:20We're not getting too many waves right now, but they'll warm up eventually, maybe.
35:26Maybe.
35:27We'll see.
35:48Nice morning, huh?
35:50A few days later, better weather brings in week two of lobster fishing.
35:56Nice weather and nice catches.
35:59All we can ask for.
36:02And the brutal grind gives way to high spirits on deck.
36:06In all of life, you've got some.
36:09Okay, Alec.
36:10But if you will, you make it.
36:13Don't worry.
36:15Be happy.
36:16Captain Steve Burt's crew starts firing on all cylinders.
36:20Oh, Steve says I'm doing a little bit better.
36:23A little bit quicker on my feet.
36:24Moving a little bit faster.
36:27It's nice to hear.
36:29Took them a while to get the hang of things and how I like to work.
36:33They're a little goofy, but it could be a lot worse.
36:37A lot of people quitting this year and not showing up.
36:40So you've got to be a little bit patient with them.
36:42It's so nice to have someone to talk to so I know I won't go nuts talking to myself back
36:47here.
36:47Yeah, it makes a big difference.
36:49Jesse and Alexi.
36:51They're definitely not the same shape.
36:53As long as we're working together, we'll be fine.
36:55Yeah.
36:56Thought they'd get along pretty good, I guess.
36:58Good job, guys!
37:00Woo!
37:07I've got a weird crew.
37:13On the north side of Bird Rock,
37:16Captain Steven Clark is desperate for good catches after his border gamble.
37:22Pretty bleak there for a little while.
37:25Lobsters probably just wanting to stay hunkered down in their little holes.
37:30Staying safe, not going out trying to get any food.
37:34But before he can get too comfortable...
37:38Deep inside her.
37:41That's the friendliest wave we've got all season.
37:44Captain Cody and the Miss Lila Leslie send a message to Steven.
37:53Cody texted me and said, you're over the line, so you're north side boat now.
37:57I said, no problem.
37:58I'll be safe.
37:59The only rule that we have is agreement amongst fishermen is just if you start somewhere, you stay there for
38:04the season.
38:05You don't take your gear from the north side to the south side and back to the north side like
38:09in the same season.
38:11Thought they'll be looking for trouble, I guess.
38:15You just want to make sure if I was on the north side that I was all there, you know,
38:19not going back and forth,
38:20because that's a door that nobody wants open.
38:23I'll be sticking it out to the end, whether it's a good year or bad year.
38:27I just want to do my own thing, and if it's a bad year, well, so be it.
38:33No hard feelings, like I totally understand.
38:37Not expecting them to like us being here.
38:41You know, I'd say we definitely north siders now.
38:49Ah, you son of a bitch.
38:52On the southern side of the Magdalene Islands, Captain Adam's secret spot has been discovered.
39:00I see two boats down there now.
39:04Word has spread fast about his good catches.
39:08Genius, genius.
39:12Better do some trouble?
39:14Not too bad.
39:18It's fine and hot. It's too much sun.
39:21Well, first time this year. This is going to come off.
39:27Aaron, I'm doing it.
39:30For a hundred years or more, like, you know, it was always around the 9th of May.
39:34It was about the time the lobsters wake up, and still the same yet today.
39:42There.
39:43Now I'll be able to work a lot faster.
39:45Okay.
39:49Watch me go now.
39:53The warmer temperatures have brought a visitor.
39:59There I got you.
40:01Got a little friend.
40:03When I was a kid, when I was 10, 11 years old, I had pet ravens.
40:10Spring and daisies.
40:12I raised them, and they used to follow me everywhere.
40:15Super smart. They're pretty good pets.
40:18Aaron, what do I got?
40:21Bird flew in the cabin, huh?
40:22Yeah.
40:26I was always nice to birds out on the water.
40:29Good luck.
40:33After a brutally cold start...
40:36Can't ask for better right now.
40:38Go, go, go!
40:40It's finally starting to feel like lobster season on the Maggies.
40:44I hope we're done with the cold weather, and our luck will change for the better.
40:49Spring is in the air. Spring is in the air.
40:52Spring is in the air.
40:54We're going near another box of bands, bud.
40:57Back on the north side...
41:00Yeah, big fishing.
41:02Captain Steven's border gamble is paying off, at least when it comes to the fishing.
41:07Probably averaging in like the 30, 35 lobsters of trawl stuff.
41:14Yeah, that's the best fishing I've ever seen.
41:16Usually the box of bands, it lasts a week, not a day.
41:20It's pretty much half strategy and half luck.
41:24Sometimes you'll get really lucky.
41:28Steven knows what he's doing, he's a big boy.
41:30He didn't find the satisfaction on the south side, and he may not find it on the north side either.
41:36But, you know, it might work out for him.
41:38If we can keep this up, we'll be alright.
41:51With the boats tied up for the day, Adam pays a visit to Steven, checking in on the fallout for
42:01crossing the line.
42:04How was it?
42:05It was alright.
42:07Somebody shot at us anyway.
42:09How are they taking it?
42:10There's a few new boats on the other side.
42:14I'm just sticking to myself, doing my own thing.
42:17I'm not bothering anybody.
42:18I sit outside of everyone.
42:19Everyone's like all in one area, and I'm just off to myself, so I think it'll be alright.
42:25I think they'll get over it.
42:27I have no intentions of leaving.
42:30If that means kind of stepping on somebody's toes a bit, or making somebody a little bit angry,
42:37because you're trying to do the best for you and your family, I don't know.
42:41I don't really think there's much you can do about it, really, right?
42:45It's going to be a long nine weeks.
42:48I'm just going to continue doing my own thing, man, not taking no pass on anybody.
42:53Just go from there.
43:00For all six weeks, I have a good one.
43:03We'll wait out for a couple days.
43:03What's the last one?
43:04Therefore do be a rainfall Bourbon tradition.
43:04Which love is important to me.
43:04Which is akalaya of offense and mieux.
