01:56Viktor Orbán blocked Ukraine's accession for months and for years
02:01because he thought that this is a danger for Europe
02:04and now Magyar is trying to get rid of all of the controversial issues
02:07that he inherited from Orbán
02:10one of them is Ukraine's accession
02:12Magyar's condition is that Ukraine agrees
02:14on the protection of the minority rights, education and culture
02:21here we are talking about an 11 point action plan
02:24proposed by Hungary
02:26Magyar said that the talks are advancing
02:29he is optimistic and he could meet Zelensky next week
02:32let's take a look at what he said
02:34so far these negotiations are progressing very encouragingly
02:40we hope that they can even be concluded
02:42at a technical level this week
02:44and I can confirm here
02:46in Berlin
02:47in this wonderful vibrant city
02:49that I'm ready to meet with Ukrainian president
02:52President Zelensky
02:52sometime early next week
02:54if we can actually agree
02:56on these basic human rights
03:01Peter Meyer
03:02and of course today he's moving on to Paris
03:04to speak with Emmanuel Macron
03:05but tell us Sander
03:06when can the EU start agreeing
03:07on starting Ukraine's membership talks?
03:11Well Euronews spoke to several EU diplomats
03:14and all of them were very optimistic
03:16they are saying that before the next EU summit
03:19at the 18th of June
03:20there could be an agreement
03:22and Hungary could lift its veto
03:24this would mean that Ukraine could start
03:26its first negotiating cluster
03:29with the European Union
03:30which is about fundamental rights
03:33now there is also one reference
03:35about starting the negotiating chapter
03:38in the draft conclusions
03:39of this European summit
03:41which is a clear signal
03:42that the EU is preparing
03:43and let's not forget that
03:45Ukraine's accession
03:47is very high on the agenda
03:49of Antonio Costa
03:50the head of the European Council
03:52and Ursula von der Leyen
03:53president of the European Commission
03:55so everyone seems to be
03:57on the same side
03:59and also this could be a very big step
04:01also for Ukraine
04:02because after years of waiting
04:04they could actually start
04:05the negotiations with the EU
04:07So you're saying everyone could be
04:08on the same side
04:10that's something that rarely happens
04:11at those EU summits
04:12Thank you so much for that update
04:14Now, trade and finance ministers
04:17from all across the globe
04:18are huddling in Paris today
04:20for the OECD's annual ministerial
04:22for the view now
04:23from the Australian government
04:24on all the challenges
04:25facing the world today
04:26we can cross now to Paris
04:27where we're joined by
04:28the Australian Trade and Tourism Minister
04:31that's Don Farrell of course
04:32Good morning sir
04:33great to have you with us
04:34on Europe today
04:34you're very welcome
04:37Good to be talking with you
04:39Maeve
04:40So look, you're in Paris today
04:41for these important talks
04:43you seem to be
04:44edging closer and closer
04:45to Europe all the time
04:46is that because of the uncertainty
04:47of the US administration
04:48and the threats perhaps
04:49posed by China today?
04:52Look, once we came to government
04:55four years ago
04:57pretty much this month
04:59we had decided
05:01that because of
05:02problems that we'd had
05:04in our trading relationship
05:05around the world
05:06we needed to diversify
05:09our trading relationships
05:11and not have all
05:13our eggs in the one basket
05:15as they say
05:16and so
05:17over the last four years
05:19we have developed
05:20new trading relationships
05:22the United Kingdom
05:24for instance
05:25we've signed
05:27a free trade agreement
05:28with them
05:28that's working really well
05:30and our trade
05:31is up
05:32very, very significantly
05:34with the United Kingdom
05:35with India
05:36our trade's almost double
05:38with India
05:39since we reached
05:40a trade agreement
05:42we
05:44reached an agreement
05:45with the UAE
05:46again
05:47that's been very successful
05:49and now most recently
05:50the hardest of them all
05:52was a free trade agreement
05:54with the
05:55with the Europeans
05:56but we
05:57we signed
05:58a few weeks ago
05:59in Sydney
06:00you did indeed
06:00it's always complicated
06:01isn't it
06:02when it comes to the
06:02the European Union
06:03but this all happens
06:04as well
06:05in a backdrop
06:05of potential
06:06prolonged instability
06:07in the Middle East
06:08that potentially could push
06:09the global economy
06:10closer to recession
06:11tell us
06:12what's your view here
06:13especially bearing in mind
06:14that you're in Paris
06:14today at these talks
06:15and how this war
06:16is impacting
06:17the Australian economy
06:19yeah look
06:20there's no doubt
06:21Maeve
06:22that that'll be
06:23a hot topic
06:25that we'll be discussing
06:26over the next few days
06:29my job in particular
06:30since this war began
06:32was to ensure
06:33that Australia
06:34had enough fuel
06:35whether it be petrol
06:36diesel
06:37or airline fuel
06:38and fertiliser
06:39for our crops
06:41so I've been very focused
06:43on travelling around
06:44the world
06:45to ensure
06:46that we've got
06:47sufficient
06:47of all of those products
06:49so I've been in Singapore
06:51I've been in China
06:52I've been in Japan
06:52and of course
06:53now I'm here in Paris
06:56we want to ensure
06:57that however long
07:00these troubles
07:02in the Middle East
07:02last
07:03that we've got
07:05sufficient
07:05of all of those
07:06fuels
07:07to keep our industry
07:08going
07:08it's very important
07:09for our farmers
07:10very important
07:10for our miners
07:11very similar talks
07:12taking place in Brussels
07:13and other talks
07:14that took place
07:14here in Brussels
07:15just last Friday
07:16very urgent talks
07:17on how to deal
07:18with China
07:18what would Australia's
07:20advice be here
07:21how can Brussels
07:22learn from your
07:23example of dealing
07:23with Beijing
07:26well patience
07:27is a good
07:29first start
07:30with the Chinese
07:32when I became
07:34the trade minister
07:35four years ago
07:36we had
07:37$20 billion
07:38worth of trade
07:39impediments
07:40with China
07:41now you've got
07:43to put that
07:43in perspective
07:44China is our
07:45largest trading
07:45partner
07:46and at the time
07:47trade was worth
07:48about $330 billion
07:50two-way trade
07:51between Australia
07:52and China
07:54but we set
07:55about
07:57to stabilise
07:58our relationship
07:59we'd had a very
07:59rocky relationship
08:00the previous
08:01government
08:02and to win
08:03back all of
08:04that trade
08:05and
08:05it took us
08:07three years
08:07we didn't get
08:08it fixed
08:09overnight
08:10but by
08:11the end of
08:12our last term
08:13in government
08:13we had resolved
08:14all of those
08:15trade impediments
08:16and for most
08:17of the products
08:18that had been
08:19subject to those
08:19impediments
08:20we were now
08:21actually selling
08:22more than
08:24before the
08:24impediments
08:24were imposed
08:26okay
08:26so I'll pass
08:27that message
08:27on to EU
08:28leaders
08:28they need
08:28some patience
08:29just finally
08:30do you consider
08:30China your
08:31biggest military
08:31threat
08:32and are you
08:32also focused
08:33on tech
08:33sovereignty
08:34like the
08:34European Union
08:35is doing
08:36today
08:36by presenting
08:37a master
08:37plan
08:38well we'd
08:39like to see
08:40peace
08:40in our
08:41region
08:42and when
08:44you look
08:44around the
08:44world
08:45there's
08:46plenty
08:46of
08:48trouble
08:48spots
08:49around
08:49the
08:49world
08:50whether
08:50it be
08:50the
08:50Middle
08:50East
08:51or
08:51in
08:51Europe
08:52one of
08:53the
08:53things
08:54that
08:54we've
08:54been
08:54very
08:54focused
08:55on
08:55is
08:56as
08:57a
08:57middle
08:57power
08:57in
08:58the

08:59is
08:59ensuring
09:00that
09:00we

09:01our
09:02policies
09:02of
09:02a
09:03peaceful
09:03region
09:04that's
09:05been
09:05very good
09:06for
09:06Australia
09:06in
09:07recent
09:08months
09:08particularly
09:09with
09:09the
09:09troubles
09:09around
09:11the
09:11rest
09:11of
09:11the
09:11world
09:11we've
09:12been
09:12able
09:13to
09:13continue
09:13pretty
09:14much
09:15uninterrupted
09:15our trade
09:16relationships
09:17and that's
09:18the way
09:18we'd like
09:18to keep it
09:19okay
09:19minister
09:20don
09:20farrell

09:58for now
09:59but what
09:59i can
09:59say is
10:00that

10:06because it's
10:07needed
10:07now
10:08this was

10:13russia's
10:14continued
10:14invasion
10:15of
10:16ukraine
10:16as well
10:16as the

10:17and the
10:17spillover
10:18effects
10:18this is
10:19happening
10:19occurring

10:30orban
10:31many are
10:31hoping to
10:32see that

10:32sanctions
10:33package
10:33will have
10:33more
10:33bite
10:34to it
10:34a major
10:35point of
10:35contention
10:36will be
10:36whether
10:37the eu
10:37moves
10:38forward
10:38with its
10:39maritime

10:45by malta
10:46and greece
10:46also
10:47we'll be
10:48looking out
10:48for whether
10:49the eu
10:49continues
10:49to go
10:50harder
10:50on chinese
10:51companies
10:52helping
10:53russia
10:53circumvent
10:54eu
10:55sanctions
10:55as you
10:55rightly
10:56pointed
10:56out
10:56i sat
10:57down
10:57with
10:57the eu

10:58envoy
10:58david
10:59o'sullivan
10:59to talk
11:00to him
11:00about this
11:01suite
11:01of measures
11:01and i
11:02started
11:02by asking
11:03him
11:03first
11:03about
11:04how that
11:04crackdown
11:05was
11:06faring
11:06particularly
11:07as some
11:07of these
11:08chinese
11:08companies
11:08produced
11:09the components
11:10found
11:11in russian
11:11drones
11:12we
11:13recently
11:13listed
11:14some
11:14in a
11:15previous
11:15package
11:15some
11:16chinese
11:16banks
11:16who
11:17then
11:17agreed
11:17to
11:18discontinue
11:19funding
11:20russian
11:20activities
11:21so
11:21we
11:22have
11:22been
11:22active
11:23in
11:23taking
11:24action
11:25against
11:26chinese
11:26companies
11:27but i
11:27won't hide
11:28from you
11:28that china
11:29remains
11:29a very
11:30big
11:31problem
11:31for the
11:31circumvention
11:32of our
11:32sanctions
11:33how big
11:33well it's
11:34it's one
11:35of the
11:35biggest
11:36sources
11:37of
11:37circumvention
11:38both in
11:39terms of
11:39what we
11:40call
11:40backfilling
11:40this means
11:41simply
11:42selling
11:42chinese
11:43versions
11:44of goods
11:45which we
11:45previously
11:46sold as
11:47european
11:47so you
11:48know
11:48things like
11:48household goods
11:49and so
11:49forth
11:49which is
11:50of course
11:50perfectly
11:50legitimate
11:51but also
11:52unfortunately
11:53as a
11:53platform
11:54for the
11:55re-export
11:56from china
11:56of western
11:57branded goods
11:58and eu
11:59branded goods
12:00so this is
12:00still a
12:01problem
12:02we raise it
12:03regularly
12:03at the highest
12:04level with the
12:04chinese
12:05authorities
12:05but you
12:05know their
12:06answer
12:06which is to
12:07say that
12:07they don't feel
12:08they're doing
12:09anything wrong
12:09so we still
12:10have to take
12:11unilateral
12:12action
12:12against chinese
12:13companies and
12:14financial institutions
12:15but they've also
12:16retaliated
12:17following the
12:1720th package
12:18of sanctions
12:19china responded
12:20by banning at
12:21least seven
12:22european defense
12:23companies from
12:23receiving certain
12:24dual-use products
12:25should we expect
12:27more reprisals
12:28from
12:28i think the
12:30chinese play
12:31hardball as the
12:31americans say
12:32and i think we have
12:34to face up to
12:34that that if we
12:35want to take
12:36action they will
12:37also take
12:40equal equal
12:41action
12:42but i think it
12:43is very important
12:44nonetheless that we
12:45continue to be able
12:45to send a strong
12:46message that we
12:47are vigilant about
12:49efforts to
12:49circumvent our
12:50sanctions and that
12:51where we see the
12:52evidence we will
12:53take action
12:53on the 20th package
12:54of sanctions there
12:55was also the
12:56proposal from the
12:57commission for the
12:58full ban on
12:59maritime services
13:00for russian
13:01tankers as part of
13:02the country's
13:03shadow fleet
13:04the understanding
13:05was that there
13:06should be approval
13:06first at the g7
13:08now those leaders
13:09will meet later
13:10this month in
13:10evian do you
13:11expect a breakthrough
13:12i think events in
13:14the in the gulf
13:15have clearly
13:16changed the
13:17calculus about
13:18anything to do
13:19with energy
13:20for the moment
13:21what all western
13:22economies are
13:23struggling with
13:24is access to
13:25energy at
13:26reasonable prices
13:27the price has
13:28gone up
13:28and there is
13:30scarcity of
13:31supply also in
13:32the area for
13:33example of refined
13:34products so diesel
13:35jet fuel and so
13:36forth so i think
13:37at this point there
13:38is no appetite
13:40to take
13:41additional measures
13:42which might
13:42aggravate that
13:43situation but i
13:44think the fundamental
13:45point angie is
13:46that you know our
13:47sanctions on the
13:48energy side are
13:49having a huge
13:50impact on russia
13:51russia's revenue
13:52has gone down
13:52the public
13:53finances are in
13:54great difficulty
13:55they're in deficit
13:56so i think not
13:57withstanding the fact
13:58that we may not
13:59move forward in the
14:00short term on the
14:00maritime services
14:01ban everything that
14:02we have done whether
14:03it's the oil price
14:04cap whether it's the
14:05actions against the
14:06shadow fleet all of
14:07this has contributed
14:09to seriously
14:10undermining russia's
14:12revenue from
14:13hydrocarbon exports
14:14and this was one of
14:15our key objectives
14:16and it is working
14:20our angie scudins
14:21there with david
14:22o'sullivan but
14:23moving on now to
14:23the middle east
14:24in signs that peace
14:25talks have made very
14:26little political
14:27progress the u.s and
14:28iran have launched
14:29fresh strikes
14:30despite claims from
14:32the u.s secretary of
14:32state marco rubio
14:33that a deal was
14:34within reach the
14:35reality on the ground
14:36looks different for
14:37more your news is
14:38stefan kobe joins me
14:39now here in the
14:40studio good morning
14:41stefan good morning
14:42maive it's getting
14:43very hard to follow
14:44all these mixed
14:45messages please
14:45enlighten us yeah
14:47well absolutely
14:47maive donald trump
14:49likes to call himself
14:50the master of the
14:52deal but when it
14:52comes to a ceasefire
14:54with iran it's really
14:55hard to tell what
14:57exactly he is
14:59negotiating for one
15:00day trump says peace
15:01is within reach the
15:03next day he sounds
15:04pessimistic then he
15:05suggests the
15:06breakthrough could
15:07happen at any
15:08moment a few hours
15:09later he appears to
15:10lower expectations
15:11again now for
15:13america's allies
15:14financial markets
15:16and certainly iran
15:17deciphering donald trump's
15:19latest position has
15:20become a full-time job
15:21now trump would argue
15:23that's exactly the
15:25point unpredictability
15:26has always been a
15:28part of his brand you
15:29know keep everyone
15:31guessing and you keep
15:32the upper hand but
15:33there is of course
15:34another way of looking
15:35at it now critics
15:36say the shifting
15:38messages reveal a
15:40deeper problem and
15:41it's not strategic
15:42ambiguity but strategic
15:44uncertainty they argue
15:46that the white house
15:46has no plan and is
15:47trying to find a
15:48solution sort of on
15:49the fly so every new
15:52trump statement is now
15:53scrutinized for clues
15:55is he signaling a
15:57breakthrough preparing
15:58the ground for a
15:59compromise or is he
16:00just changing course
16:01again so that's the
16:04challenge with trump's
16:05diplomacy the line
16:07between negotiating
16:08tactic and confusion
16:09is sometimes not
16:12visible maive and
16:13certainly keeping you
16:14very busy and of
16:15course we can read
16:15more of your analysis
16:16on yournews.com
16:17stefan kobe thanks for
16:18that and due to this
16:19of course oil prices
16:21have been incredibly
16:21volatile again this week
16:23because of the
16:23uncertainty around
16:24supplies getting through
16:25hormus and prolonged
16:27hold-ups for more on
16:28the impact on financial
16:29markets and energy
16:30prices we're joined
16:31now by Osama Rizvi he's
16:32an international
16:33economic and energy
16:34analyst so good morning
16:35Osama welcome to
16:37Europe today so first
16:38question are markets
16:39reacting rationally do
16:40you think to the risks
16:41right now or do you
16:42think investors are
16:43underestimating how
16:44serious this could
16:45become well thank you
16:47so much for having me
16:48today I think it's a
16:49bit of both when you
16:51see the markets there
16:53is there seems to be a
16:54continuum on which the
16:56reactions can be purged
16:57upon for instance the
16:58oil markets look at the
16:59oil markets a few weeks
17:01ago the difference
17:02between the physical
17:03markets and the paper
17:04markets was huge the
17:06spread was somewhere
17:07around 36 to 38 dollars
17:08but now as we speak
17:10today that spread seems
17:11to be shrinking but is
17:13the conditions or the
17:14circumstances better now
17:15are the circumstances
17:16better now not at all
17:17so which means that
17:18markets are sort of
17:21divided confused they are
17:23they are in a haze as
17:24to what will happen next
17:25and this confusion
17:26uncertainty is what is
17:28fueling this this dual
17:30behavior I would say
17:31but moving forward one
17:33thing is very important
17:33to understand that
17:34fundamentally speaking
17:35from oil markets to the
17:37financial markets the
17:38chances of both turning
17:40ugly or things getting
17:41worse are unfortunately
17:42more than them getting
17:43better before and you
17:44said the markets are
17:45feeling confused what
17:46about consumers how
17:47concerned should consumers
17:48should we be about fuel
17:49prices rising further at the
17:51pumps well consumers have
17:54been very clear about what
17:57is going around and also
17:58being very clear in terms
17:59of their future confidence
18:01regarding the global
18:02economy for instance
18:04economic confidence in
18:05Europe is down when you
18:07look at the US it's at the
18:09US Michigan consumer
18:10sentiment index is down to
18:12multi-years low you look
18:14at the cost input cost
18:16especially in Europe it has
18:17increased to a four-year
18:18high similarly you know you
18:22look at across the consumer
18:23center I think it's showing
18:25confusion it's all very
18:27gloomy isn't it Osama Rizvi
18:28but thank you so much for
18:29joining us this morning and
18:30bringing us all your
18:31analysis and now as you
18:32heard earlier EU leaders are
18:34still scratching their heads
18:35about how to prepare for
18:36increasing drone incidents
18:38along the EU borders for more
18:40on what's at stake here's our
18:41Jakob Janis
18:44if you think this is how war
18:46sounds your reporter has bad
18:48news for you things have
18:49changed and you should be more
18:50wary of this sound
18:55after last week's Russian drone
18:56crash into Romanian apartment
18:58block Moscow offered no
18:59apologies instead Russia's
19:02deputy security council
19:03chairman Dmitry Medvedev issued a
19:05chilling threat he warned that
19:07because European governments supply
19:09weapons to Kyiv the citizens of EU
19:11states will not be able to sleep
19:13peacefully so how can Europeans
19:15defend themselves from drones the EU
19:18has an action plan on drone
19:19security but a leaked document from
19:22last week reveals how member states
19:23actually plan to put it into
19:25practice focusing on three key areas
19:28number one is stricter
19:30identification the block wants tighter
19:32registration rules so authorities can
19:34instantly tell a harmless civilian drone
19:36from a hostile threats and second is
19:39smarter detection member states wants
19:42to use advanced sensors and
19:43artificial intelligence to spot
19:45incoming drones near critical
19:46infrastructure and lastly we have
19:49intelligence sharing Brussels wants
19:51to act as a central hub for
19:52coordinating data across the
19:54continent but here we have a little
19:57problem national governments insist this
19:59sharing must remain strictly voluntary to
20:01protect classified information and avoid
20:04duplicating NATO's efforts so let's go
20:07back to our drone case in Romania the
20:09Ministry of Defense acknowledged it
20:11could not shoot down the drone due to
20:13its proximity to people's homes and
20:15authorities have just four minutes to
20:17act and as long as the drone security
20:19remains primary and national competence
20:21European governments will operate in
20:23silos and citizens will see the
20:25consequences the Baltic region was
20:28rattled by at least six suspected
20:29incursions in May alone with one
20:31incident even forcing Lithuanian president
20:34to take shelter on the grounds so yes
20:36the EU is trying to work together on
20:38securing its skies but with threats from
20:40Russia it must build a truly unified
20:43defense before it's too late
20:50and that brings this edition of Europe
20:52today to an end thank you so much for
20:53your company as always you can always
