00:15the Knicks are in the NBA finals back for the first time in 27 years but they've had
00:21a roller coaster ride as a franchise just trying to get there so on this episode of
00:26New York Got Game we're going to talk to somebody whose play for the Knicks was part of their early
00:31development success story and was with them through some of the downs but now has to be
00:35excited about seeing them where they are right now and that is former Knick guard Langston Galloway
00:40who joins me now on New York Got Game Langston what's going on man what's going on man glad to
00:46be on and glad to have me glad to welcome me to the show I'm glad to be on glad
00:51to have you man
00:52first of all I tell people you joined me from Turkey so uh this might be the furthest somebody's
00:56ever joined me on on the on the show you've been you've been hooping out there um so we appreciate
01:01the time brother thank you so much Langston let me ask you this because it's somebody who played in a
01:06very different period we'll say in franchise history with the Knicks um when you see the team in NBA
01:12finals for the first time since 1999 what's the first thought that comes to your mind and does
01:17it bring up any feelings for you somebody who's played for the franchise no I mean it the biggest
01:24thing for me is obviously hey it's one you know when you get this far in the playoffs um and
01:30you
01:31know obviously it reminisces of like you know the early years when the Knicks got to the finals and it
01:36was against the Spurs back then so it's like those are the two two things in my head I'm like
01:42man look
01:42I hope they can you know get it done because you know I'm supporting from afar and uh just glad
01:47to
01:48you know have been a part of the journey and where they are now yeah no you're definitely part of
01:51the
01:52journey I think when Knicks fans think about your story your journey right going from well for young
01:57kids you don't know it was the D League back then not the G League it was the D League
02:01before they had
02:02the Gatorade sponsorship on there so you go from the D League you go to MSG you were the first
02:07Knicks
02:07player to be called up from the D League what do you remember most about that call up and the
02:13way
02:14the fan base embraced you because you had a great game your first game at MSG you showed I think
02:18you
02:18had 19 points what do you remember about that call up and then showing out at MSG you know it
02:23all
02:24worked out for me uh just in the sense of not knowing you know obviously they had a couple
02:30trades that went down guys went from New York to Cleveland and you know Shump, JR those guys kind of
02:36got moved and it kind of opened up you know a slot for me to kind of get an opportunity
02:40and and you
02:42know just as a young player you don't know the expectations or you know the ramifications of
02:48like how it's going to pan out for your career and like that but you know I was just ready
02:52I was just
02:52excited for the opportunity uh you know having a call from Allen Houston at the time which was the
02:57uh you know the general manager of the Westchester Knicks at the time and you know I just went out
03:04there
03:04and just said look whatever is in front of me I'm just trying to kill and that's all my mindset's
03:09been ever since and um you know I continue to carry that you know the rest of my career as
03:14I continue
03:14to play now. Yeah that's a good good mindset to have whenever you get into a new situation but I
03:19just talked to you about that right because when you scored the 19 points in that first game at the
03:24Garden did I always think this moment is maybe not asked enough about people in that situation was
03:29that a situation where you said to yourself okay I feel like I belong here in that in that moment
03:35or
03:35did it take longer for you to say okay I'm an NBA player now like when did that moment come
03:41for you
03:41where you're like okay I know I belong in the NBA was it that first game or was it something
03:44later?
03:45No it was later uh I mean obviously first game you know they they're gonna write you off regardless
03:50like obviously we had lost the game you know scoring that many points but we lost so they they really
03:54didn't say much I think it didn't come until later on in the season when we played I think it's
03:59so
04:00funny we actually played against the Spurs and I remember us playing against them and obviously we
04:05wasn't supposed to win and it just like I saw you know pop kept calling timeouts and different things
04:10were going on and we you know they had their starters and we just kept playing throughout the
04:15whole game and next you know you look up and then we end up beating them right at the end
04:18and so that was like the first moment where I was like you know they were upset that they had
04:23lost the
04:23game where they you know obviously were supposed to run away with it and we were just you know just
04:27just battling just battling we had a lot of guys that were you know 10-day guys and guys that
04:32were
04:32just fighting for their careers and so uh for us to get that opportunity to go out there and play
04:37against them and make the most of it that that was really like the the stepping stone for me to
04:42say
04:42okay look if I can kind of compete against this this team this level this caliber you know I can
04:47take
04:47it to a whole nother level you know going forward yeah and yeah you you were able to do that
04:52going
04:52forward I want to talk to you a little bit about this current Knicks team because as you know Jalen
04:56Brunson he's become the face of this era of Knicks basketball what what impresses you the most looking
05:01from afar with Jalen Brunson about his leadership does he remind you of any great leaders that you've
05:06played with before you know he he definitely reminds me of a little bit of like the I don't want
05:15to say
05:16in anybody specific because I hate comparing uh guys to anybody else but you know in the sense of
05:21like him controlling the pace of the games him being able to go out there um he's just a uh
05:29a unique
05:29player you know playing off of two feet a lot of pivots a lot of like jab steps you know
05:35and he's
05:36going against a lot of guys that are taller than him so you know I I kind of love the
05:39the small guard
05:40mentality because that's that's me all you know in a nutshell so to be able to see you know him
05:45doing
05:45it at a high level high clip you know I'm pulling for you know every moment to for him to
05:49you know go out
05:50there and uh and make a mark for himself for sure I notice that all the time Langston the small
05:55guards
05:56always got to stick together they're always rooting for each other so I understand what time is it's
06:00tough it's tough it's tough out here for the small guard it's really tough for the small guard because
06:03there's not that many of us not that many and most of us don't even get that opportunity so for
06:08him to
06:08get that opportunity and you know and to be the main guy for a team it's huge it's huge so
06:14I'm loving
06:14I'm loving seeing it now let's let's go on the other side somebody's definitely not a small guard
06:19in the finals every conversation with the Spurs it starts with Wemby right you know the conversation
06:24gonna be around Wemby as a player how do you even game plan for someone like Wemby who doesn't have
06:30a comparison right like you can't compare him to anybody else because we haven't seen someone
06:34like Wemby before how do you game plan for a guy like that no currently I mean I don't think
06:38there's
06:39any way to to stop him I would say that it's more so just just containing him I mean that's
06:44that's
06:44the NBA and and how a lot of coaches go you know perceive each and every matchup because it's like
06:51he's gonna be able to to do mostly anything he wants on the court it's just like how do we
06:57contain
06:58him and the rest of the Spurs because I mean they have a hell of a team hell of a
07:02squad so um and
07:04and they're young they're young they're hungry so it's like you know if if the Knicks can kind of
07:09like hold him under his averages and continue to you know make him make tough shots I mean he's been
07:16making tough shots his whole playoffs but you know make him hit even more tough shots because it's
07:21like you gotta you gotta just keep the pressure on them and and and I think that that's what's
07:25gonna you know lead them to hey get these four games that's all look four games it's like hey how
07:31can we get it how can the Knicks get it so you know I'm pulling for him like I said
07:34I'm you know
07:34I'm rooting for the Knicks and I'm gonna look I'm gonna be a big time supporter for these like you
07:38know these next next uh couple of games I know I know Knicks fans like to hear that you just
07:43said
07:43something really I think interesting as well because you said it's not even just about Wemby a lot of
07:49people focus on Wemby right Langston but San Antonio supporting cast they helped them a lot help
07:54them get through that series the Western Conference Finals against OKC who do you think on the Spurs
07:58Knicks fans should be maybe focusing on or talking a little bit more about when it comes
08:03that's not Wemby to look when you look at this series you know Castle Castle is really playing
08:08well um he's a like I don't want to say an underrated player because he's not you know he's
08:16really playing well and he and he has a lot of like game behind that but you know him Vassell
08:22like
08:22them two players like they play well for them uh they they go they go uh so that's that's the
08:29that's
08:29the I think in my book the the pivotal pieces if they can kind of limit them make them make
08:35tough
08:35shots or even like missing missing a few shots but down the stretch that that'll that'll go a long way
08:41but uh but if they're not um able to stop them I think it's gonna be a long it's gonna
08:46be a long
08:47series because both of them are just I mean they're having a really really pivotal uh playoff
08:52playoff uh run right here with the Spurs yeah they absolutely have where do you think the Knicks can
08:58attack the Spurs team if you're looking offensively where do you think they can attack the Spurs team
09:02I think the biggest thing for them obviously uh it won't be the inside shooting um obviously trying
09:11to get to the paint but it's really it's really knocking down those those pull-ups because when
09:16we when we I think sometimes it's dropping back he's trying to help out on a lot of different uh
09:20you know layups and and different things like that so it's like you can get to the you know that
09:2515
09:25footer knock down a lot of those jump shots that'll really help out the series obviously
09:31the Spurs they play they play fast they get up and down they're knocking on a lot of threes right
09:35now so
09:36if they can kind of you know all night continue to be consistent with that 15 footer I think that'll
09:42go a long way that'll go a long way that's a good point Langston because the Knicks have some really
09:46good mid-range shooters shooters obviously Jalen Brunson being elite uh Mikkel Bridges also can
09:51operate very well in that area so that will be very interesting I want to bring back to you real
09:55quick
09:56because you were the first Westchester Knicks success story when you see the organization what they've done
10:02now with player development and that's been a huge part of success you look someone like Mitchell
10:05Robinson, Deuce McBride does it feel like you helped start something with that Knicks player
10:10development success do you feel that at all? I think it really is really important and and this
10:18is just so you know my opinion because I can't really speak for everybody else but it's just being
10:23able to be right there and connected to the program and uh and organization because you know obviously
10:28when I was coming through you know obviously we're practicing in the same facility we're able to see
10:33the same not saying the same staff but you know you're seeing the guys you know in and out of
10:37the
10:37locker rooms you you're able to run past guys you can you know you can ask questions you'll see the
10:43coaches walking around the coaches are watching your practices um they might give you pointers
10:48you know here and there so it's like you know when you're connected with the with the big club and
10:53you're
10:53able to see them and see what's going on and then also too like um what is the you know
11:00the benefit
11:01of like from a player standpoint and how do they think mentality wise like hey look how do I get
11:06up
11:07to the big club but it's it's like being able to see them them guys see what they're working on
11:11seeing
11:11how can I take advantage of my opportunity and go out there and and really put my best foot forward
11:17and that's and that was my my biggest benefit because it's like hey I was able to be right there
11:21in the locker room and I'm able to talk to those guys and also too like just seeing you know
11:26what
11:26what what what they're putting on the court like a lot of guys they work hard I mean obviously Jalen
11:30you know you got McHale you got all those guys they put a lot of work in they put a
11:34lot of work in
11:35and you know to to see that and see how they kind of transform this this whole you know last
11:41couple
11:41of years for that program for the organization it's been huge huge seeing yeah it really has
11:47the proximity to professionalism that matters a lot sometimes too uh Lancey we gotta ask I gotta
11:52ask you this prediction what's your prediction for the NBA finals do the Knicks win their first title
11:57in 53 years what you saying um I'm pulling for them to get it done I'm pulling for them to
12:02get it
12:02done it's gonna be extremely hard and the only reason why I'm saying extremely hard because they got a
12:06lot of uh you know uh old history old but old blood you know that's that's that's there because
12:13it's obviously you know at the Spurs that was the last time last time it was in the finals you
12:17know
12:17with Allen Houston and those guys and it's like they they weren't able to get it done against them
12:21so it's like if they can if they can get this done and rewrite history and say hey look you
12:26know
12:26last time was what it was and then this time it's a new new chapter being born I would love
12:32to see it
12:33so you know I'm gonna pull for them look I'm saying Knicks and six that's what I'm saying
12:36Knicks and six okay so you would have the same prediction okay Knicks and six I I that's what
12:40I'm going with Knicks and six we like it Knicks and six okay I'm rocking all right last thing before
12:46I let you go um you know Knicks fans they've got love for you and what's your message to the
12:52fans
12:52who sat through the rebuilding years the years you played in when the team wasn't winning as many games
12:57and all the losing and now we're getting to watch their team play for a championship what's
13:03your message to the fan base nah look I'm gonna keep it simple and look you know once a Knick
13:08always a Knick and and I'm always going to be thankful for the for the support the dedication
13:12that the fans have always have always shown obviously towards me uh even from afar and so
13:18I'm just I'm gonna say one thing hey let's let's go Knicks that's it I don't have to say much
13:23else
13:24they know what time it is and they know you know we we all gonna be rooting for the Knicks
13:28to get
13:29this thing done because it's it's gonna be a uphill battle and we're gonna need to you know
13:32we're gonna need the fans we'll need them fans for you know to get four four wins so that's that's
13:37what it is no you're right about that I know the Knicks one Dicks fans wanted to hear you say
13:41that
13:41let's go Knicks as you said once a Knick always a Knick that is Langston Galloway rocking with us
