00:05:01Vince McMahon is the most successful practitioner in sports entertainment.
00:05:06He began with a modest northeastern professional wrestling circuit he bought from his father
00:05:12and began producing and broadcasting his television programs nationally.
00:05:17For years, he served as an announcer, and only wrestling insiders knew he actually owned the company.
00:05:26Mr. McMahon has been consistently before the cameras on a national basis for over two decades,
00:05:32making his on-camera career one of the longest in television history.
00:05:38Mr. McMahon is a devoted father to his two children, Shane and Stephanie,
00:05:43and his wife, Linda, joins the rest of the family working at the WWF.
00:05:55Stone Cold Steve Austin was born and raised in Victoria, Texas.
00:06:00His career in wrestling began without a lot of fanfare.
00:06:03I was working on a freight dock and loading and unloading trucks.
00:06:06I saw a little ad for a wrestling school on TV.
00:06:09A few months later, I had my first match.
00:06:11That particular match was $40.
00:06:14Austin began moving up the wrestling ladder.
00:06:17I paid my dues.
00:06:18You know, that's what you got to do.
00:06:21Austin's experiences in the wrestling world before the WWF were not easy.
00:06:26I dig a ditch for you.
00:06:27All you got to do is call me.
00:06:28If you don't like what I'm doing, call me and fire me to my face.
00:06:31When I tore my tricep in Japan off my arm, I got fired by WCW over the phone.
00:06:37Hardship and setbacks only made Austin work harder.
00:06:41But ain't nobody in the world ever made me quit at nothing in my life.
00:06:47Steve had a history of trouble with promoters or with his bosses.
00:06:55I never asked him how he felt about being given a character when he came in here,
00:07:01but it didn't last very long and he certainly changed it.
00:07:04And I just don't think he wanted to do it.
00:07:06And I think that was the beginning of Stone Cold Steve Austin as a character doing whatever he wanted to
00:07:15do.
00:07:16Basically, giving the finger to the office and saying,
00:07:20I'm putting my black tights back on, I'm going to be what I want to be.
00:07:25And what I want to be is Stone Cold Steve Austin and that's the bottom line.
00:07:30Because Stone Cold said so.
00:07:32And he would cut a promo like that and he made these things up that now are on millions of
00:07:39t-shirts all over the world.
00:07:41And that is a huge talent that's Steve's.
00:07:45And he got to wear his black boots and black tights.
00:07:49And I think that that was the beginning of the animosity, if you will, between Steve and the office.
00:07:58There are very few people in this business that get bigger than the business.
00:08:07And Steve, I think, at times approaches that.
00:08:12And that's got to be something that a Vince McMahon doesn't like.

00:18:35the harder Mr. McMahon tried to keep him down.
00:18:39And the harder Mr. McMahon tried to keep him down,
00:18:43the more the crowd loved Steve
00:18:47and wanted him to get better and better and better
00:18:50and bigger and bigger and bigger.
00:18:51And it was a vicious circle.
00:18:53And it almost was out of control.
00:18:55Anybody who knows Vince McMahon
00:18:57or works for Vince McMahon
00:18:58understands that he runs the show
00:18:59and this is his company.
00:19:00But as Austin began to become more popular,
00:19:03and he really started to take control of his destiny,

00:19:10if it was a power struggle.
00:19:11But I think it really started,
00:19:13and it started to heat up,
00:19:14and it really reached a boiling point at WrestleMania.
