Transcript
00:00A new memorial has been unveiled by Liverpool Football Club to honour the 39 people who lost their lives in
00:06the Heisel disaster.
00:08The sculpture, called Forever Bound, marks the 41st anniversary of the tragedy that occurred before the 1985 European Cup final
00:17between Liverpool and Juventus in Belgium.
00:20Really the conversation started over a year ago about trying to think about where we might have an appropriate place
00:28to potentially move the memorial and what the memorial might then look like and how it might be reimagined and
00:35so that's where Forever Bound came from.
00:38The Oleg features two scarves tied together and includes the names of all those who died when a wall collapsed
00:43inside the stadium following clashes between rival supporters.
00:47Representatives from both Liverpool and Juventus attended the unveiling ceremony, reflecting the relationship that's developed between the two clubs in
00:55the years since the disaster.
00:57Huge credit to our supporters and our fan groups who really approached us with the idea and so I think
01:04what we see today is number one, I think just a beautiful memorial and something that provides our fans and
01:15fans of other clubs.
01:17It's generally a place to come and show their respect and remember those lives that were lost and to ensure,
01:23I think as was said earlier as well, to make sure that something like that never happens again.
01:28Among those attending were former Liverpool striker Ian Rush who played in the 1985 final and later spent a season
01:34with Juventus.
01:35He said it was important both clubs continued to come together in remembrance, adding younger generations need to understand what
01:42happened and why it remains significant today.
01:45Clearly it's an important day to remember, one that as we said earlier we never want to forget, to show
01:55the respect to those lives that were lost 41 years ago and so this is something, as you know, this
02:03is something that we recognise every year.
02:05The ceremony included wreath-laying by representatives of both clubs alongside Liverpool's civic dignitaries.
02:11A moment of silence was also observed in memory of the victims.
02:16I think there's a, look first of all, there's a tremendous amount of respect for Juventus Football Club just as
02:21an institution, as a club and what they've achieved, you know, on the pitch.
02:26And I would say that there's a very strong relationship between the two clubs, Peter who's here representing them and
02:35I have known each other for 15 years, worked together in football and we know the executives and the board
02:41at Juventus very well.
02:42And so, you know, the relationship is very strong and, you know, that's developed obviously over time and, as you
02:50said earlier, this, you know, difficult, terrible tragedy that the two clubs share, but that relationship now is very strong.
