The film follows a group of German schoolboys, talked into enlisting at the beginning of World War I by their jingoistic teacher. The story is told entirely through the experiences of the young German recruits and highlights the tragedy of war through the eyes of individuals.

02:07From the Russians?
02:09No, from the French.
02:11From the Russians.
02:12We capture more than that every day.
02:33Where's the postman?
02:36War is war and snaps is snaps.
02:38The business must go on.
02:39You didn't leave the mail yet this morning.
02:41Oh, I'm sorry, Mr. Meyer.
02:47Hello, himostos.
02:49Anything for us today?
02:50No, no, Master Peter.
02:51Oh, there must be.
02:52Here, here, there, you're young Russian.
02:55There.
02:56This is the last mail I deliver anyhow.
02:58What?
02:59Tomorrow I change uniform.
03:01You're going in the army?
03:02Yes, I was called.
03:03I'm a sergeant in the reserves, you know.
03:05I'll be called myself if it doesn't end in a few months.
03:08It will, though.
03:09I'm sure you're right, Mr. Meyer.
03:17Oh, I'm sure you're right, Mr. Meyer.
04:39Thank you, boys.
04:40You are the iron men of Germany.
04:43You are the gay heroes who will repulse the enemy when you are called upon to do so.
04:49It is not for me to suggest that any of you should stand up and offer to defend his country.
04:56But I wonder if such a thing is going through your heads.
04:59I know that in one of the schools the boys have risen up in the classroom and enlisted in a
05:06mass.
05:07And of course, if such a thing should happen here, you would not blame me for a feeling of pride.
05:13Perhaps some will say that you should not be allowed to go yet, that you are too young, that you
05:20have homes, mothers, fathers, that you should not be torn away.
05:25Are your fathers so forgetful of their fatherland that they would let it perish rather than you?
05:33Are your mothers so weak that they cannot send a son to defend the land which gave them birth?
05:41And after all, is a little experience such a bad thing for a boy?
05:48Is the honor of wearing a uniform something from which we should run?
05:54And if our young lady is glory in those who wear it, is that anything to be ashamed of?
06:00I know you have never desired the adulation of heroes.
06:06That has not been part of my teaching.
06:09We have sought to make ourselves worthy and let a claim come when it would.
06:14But to be foremost in battle is a virtue not to be despised.
06:22I believe it will be a quick war, but there will be few losses.
06:27But if losses there must be, then let us remember the Latin phrase which must have come to the lips
06:34of many a Roman when he stood embattled in a foreign land.
06:39Dulci et decorum est pro patria more.
06:44Sweet and fitting it is to die for the fatherland.
06:50Some of you may have ambitions.
06:53I know of one young man who has great promise as a writer.
06:57And he has written the first act of a tragedy, which would be a credit to one of the masters.
07:03And he is dreaming, I suppose, of following in the footsteps of Goethe and Schiller.
07:10And I hope he will.
07:11But now, our country calls.
07:15The fatherland needs leaders.
07:17Personal ambition must be thrown aside in the one great sacrifice for our country.
07:25Here is a glorious beginning for your lives.
07:29The field of honor calls you.
07:32Why are we here?
07:35You, Klopp.
07:36What has kept you back?
07:38You, mother.
07:40You know how much you are needed.
07:42Ah, I see you look at your leader.
07:47I, too, look to you, Paul Baumer.
07:51I wonder what you are going to do.
07:54I'll go.
07:55I want to go.
07:56Count on me.
07:57Me, too.
07:59I'm ready.
08:00I'm not going to stay home.
08:07I'm ready.
08:13In this now.
08:15No more classes.
08:16No more classes.
08:19Don't be a quitter.
08:20Come on, babe.
08:21Stick together.
08:22That's what we have got to do.
08:23Let's all stick together.
08:25Let's all stick together.
08:27All right. All right. I'll go.
09:03I'll go.
09:28I'll go.
09:55I'll go.
09:57I'll go.
09:57I'll go.
09:57I'll go.
09:57I'll go.
09:57I'll go.
09:57I'll go.
09:57I'll go.
09:58I'll go.
09:58I'll go.
09:58I'll go.
09:58I'll go.
09:58I'll go.
10:24I'll go.
10:57Well, if I'm going to bump off the enemy, I've got to have some practice.
11:00Ow!
11:02Bayonet grill.
11:03That's what I want.
11:07You want a medal that time, mother?
11:10You wait.
11:11You wait.
11:11I'll go.
11:35I'll go.
11:38For the love of me, it's Himmelsstowes.
11:40So it is.
11:41And all dressed up.
11:43Hello, Hemmie.
11:44You didn't think you'd see me again so soon, did you?
11:48You see my rank?
11:50Sure.
11:51Go back then.
11:53Himmelsstowes, we certainly are glad to see you.
11:55What did you say?
11:56I was going to say.
11:56Never mind.
11:57What's the matter with you, Himmelsstowes?
11:59When you address your superior officer, say, sir.
12:02Where'd he get us a nice uniform?
12:03In the mail port, Hemmie?
12:05Where?
12:05My dear fellow, you're shouting.
12:07Oh, come on, Himmelsstowes.
12:09We know you.
12:09Take off the false whiskers.
12:13I believe you'll mean it.
12:14You'll find out that I mean it?
12:16Well, only three days ago.
12:17You were on a postman.
12:18Silence!
12:20Come back then.
12:26Line up!
12:29Line up!
12:30Get in some kind of a line.
12:31Don't think about it.
12:33All of you.
12:34Line up, respect.
12:35All right.
12:50All right.
12:51What a pretty sight that is.
12:54Have you never heard of standing in line?
12:56You make a fine mess of it.
12:58Well, I'll have to teach you.
13:00We'll spend the whole day on it.
13:03Huh?
13:04You may be stupid, but I'm used to that.
13:08And then, there'll be plenty of other things, too.
13:11Oh, I'll not neglect you.
13:14Hmm.
13:16You're not much to begin with.
13:18But I'll do my best.
13:21I see that we've come here with a slight misunderstanding.
13:25And we'll correct that, too.
13:26Won't we?
13:27Huh?
13:28And the first thing to do is to forget everything you ever knew.
13:32Everything you ever learned.
13:34Forget!
13:35See?
13:36Forget what you've been and what you think you're going to be.
13:39You're going to be soldiers.
13:41And that's all.
13:43I'll take the mother's milk out of you.
13:45I'll make you hard-boiled.
13:46I'll make soldiers out of you.
13:48Or kill you!
13:49Now!

15:00So...
15:01We have no spirit, huh?
15:03We are in no mood for recreation.
15:06Work is what we want.
15:07Good!
15:07Then we'll go back to work.
15:11Then we'll go back to work.

16:04Inspection at three!
16:06Stay straight!
16:08Oh, that swine!
16:14It means we get no time off!
16:16It'll take four hours to get ready for inspection!
16:19I'd like to know what's in his mind.
16:21He hasn't got it!
16:22I'm gonna set him open sometime and find out!
16:24He's too thick-skinned, he won't cut!
16:27This is the fourth time he's made me disappoint, that poor girl.
16:33Order, arm!

17:22Very good, sir.

17:27Let's go!
17:27Watch it!
17:30Go!
17:31Hey!

17:52Lie down!
17:55Crawl forward!
17:57Hey!
18:03He's spoiled our leaves.
18:05I'll never forgive him for that.
18:07The rat!
18:08Leave till midnight.
18:10It'll take till midnight to dry our clothes.
18:14There goes the filthy ape now.
18:17For we slave over this mud.
18:19He goes off to have a few drinks.
18:21Someday I'm going to take one snag at him.
18:23Just one.
18:24Me too.
18:25That's gonna be my life's work from now on.
18:28Why only one?
18:30I'm gonna take several.
18:31I might even kick him when he's down.
18:33I feel me.
18:36What are you doing?
18:37You're not gonna desert, are you?
18:39What?
18:47Listen.
18:48I've got an idea.
19:00Crawl forward!
19:02Lie down!
19:14Crawl forward!aton
20:03Oh
20:17Oh
20:59Oh
21:18Oh
21:24Hey
21:37Come on
22:02Like more equations coming in
22:04Well, the garden must have gone home, Greg Wood.
22:15Here's some more, fresh from the turnip patch.
22:19I suppose this is where we bumped.
22:42That's me. High Vestas. And this is where he lives.
22:47I didn't know.
22:49Well, you know now.
22:51Yes. Yes, of course.
23:00Yes.
23:00All right.
23:02Here's a bus, Paul.
23:09Hey, when did we eat?
23:11Don't remind me.
23:12I was fine until you spoke.
23:14Where are we, anyway?
23:15I don't know.
23:16The name on the railroad station's been shot off.
23:18There must be something to eat somewhere.
23:19I'll tell you what I'll do.
23:21I'll ask those fellas.
23:31Sorry to disturb you.
23:34Mr. Vestas.
23:35Oh, meet Datering.
23:37A better farmer who never lived.
23:39And Mr. Chardon.
23:41Sit down.
23:42You see, we haven't eaten since breakfast.
23:45I thought maybe you could tell us what we ought to do about it.
23:47Eat without further delay.
23:52Well, what's funny about that?
23:55It's a bad town to bring an appetite to, soldier.
23:58We've been here since yesterday morning, and we've been living on bale hay and razor blades.
24:02Well, willing to buy our food.
24:04Where's the canteen?
24:06The only canteen in these regions is out looking for supplies.
24:10Ever hear of Kaczynski?
24:12Who?
24:13Kaczynski.
24:14He's uncanny.
24:16If there's any food within 25 miles, he'll be the one to get it.
24:26Hey!
24:32Look!
24:44Whoa, whoa, whoa, whoa, whoa, whoa, whoa.
25:10What is this?
25:12Volunteers for the future general staff.
25:18Sometime I'm going to take one of you volunteers apart and find out what makes you leave school and join
25:23the army.
25:25Eddie, this is no parade ground.
25:32Hungry?
25:33Yes, sir.
25:33Wait a minute.
25:35Wait a minute.
25:35That's no invitation.
25:37Can you pay?
25:38Yes, sir.
25:39I have money.
25:41I have money.
25:41No, not money.
25:42That's just pieces of paper.
25:44Have you got any cigarettes?
25:46Cigars?
25:47Soap?
25:48Cognac?
25:51Are you crazy?
25:54There ain't enough here for us.
25:55I wish you three would get bumped off.
25:58I'm tired of feeding you for nothing.
26:00Bring everything you've got.
26:27You've got the wiring detail tonight.
26:28Where?
26:29Past the graveyard.
26:31With this bunch?
26:31No.
26:32It's quiet tonight.
26:33You can teach them a couple of things.
26:35Thanks.
26:35I'd rather do it alone.
26:37These babes get killed off too fast.
26:39Well, Lori's waiting.
26:41Last night I was too hungry to sleep.
26:43And tonight, when I get the wrinkles out of my gut, they think I'm wiring duty.
26:46Well, here's your chance, heroes.
26:49For the fatherland.
26:51Come on, get your stuff and let me get out of here.
27:16Let him drive any way he wants.
27:16Is that any way to drive?
27:17Let him drive any way he wants.
27:20Suppose he breaks your arm.
27:21You get sent home, don't you?
27:23You're a lot better than having a hold of your guts.
27:41If there's any of you left, I'll pick you up in the morning.
27:45Well, if that ride you gave us didn't kill us, nothing will.
27:47And be on time. I don't want to miss my breakfast.
28:10I don't want to miss my breakfast.
28:11You better wait for your army, Papa.
28:15Hear, hear, don't be so backward.
28:18Listen, children, all we've got to do is to swing a little wire.
28:22We pick it up at the dump and carry it to where we need it.
28:26Now you're going to see some shell fire, and you're going to be scared, see?
28:36It's all right, boys. Get up.
28:45Here. Never mind.
28:47It's happened to better men than you.
28:49And it's happened to me.
28:51When we come back, I'll get you all some nice, clean underwear.
28:59That kind of shell you don't have to pay much attention to.
29:02Those big fellas just make a lot of noise and land about five miles behind the line.
29:08The things we've got to watch out for are the light ones.
29:11They don't give you much warning.
29:14They go...
29:16Zing!
29:18And when you hear that, down!
29:22Mother Earth.
29:25Press yourself down upon her.
29:28Bury yourselves deep into her.
29:32Just keep your eyes on me.
29:34When you see me flop, you flop.
29:37Tony, try to beat me to it.
30:04It's life, home too, master by us.
30:09Wait a minute.
30:15Kiss!
30:20Yay!
30:21Miss me!
30:22Hi.
30:22Was it enough?
30:29Shhh.
30:31Now listen, I'll show you how it's done.
30:37Give me a couple of those. Extra kill the noise.
30:40Come.
31:17See that? What's that mean?
31:20Bombardment.
31:42Oh, my God.
31:49Oh, my God.
31:52Oh, my God.
31:55Oh, my God.
32:00I'm blind. I can't see it, God.
32:04My eyes, I can't see it.
32:08Oh, God.
32:11Where are we?
32:12It's Babe. It's Babe.
32:15Babe, I'm...
32:25You're gonna kill him, Mike.
32:26Take this!
32:28Whack this!
32:31Way down!
32:31You're getting better!
32:42He's dead.
32:45He's dead.
32:46Why did you risk your life bringing him in?
32:48But it's Babe.
32:50My friend.
32:51It's a corpse. No matter who it is.
32:57Don't any of you ever do that again.
32:59Put him over there.
33:31Look, that was he's a beast.
33:31He abelling theches.
33:32No matter who he's born...
33:39I'll do it.
33:40I'll audit my fingers.
33:44And I'll do that.
33:47Martin, Martin, Martin.
33:48To the police is agradecent.
33:48I didn't escape theför.
33:48I was risky people.
33:49I could not escape the air.
33:50No matter who heely is, Mike, I was...
33:52That was MRI, that was an accident blackmail.
33:53Get your pipes and pull it.
33:56Cat, what are we doing?
33:58What's happening?
33:59You heard him, Otis Amart.
34:00Well, where to for the...
34:02Another party.
34:05This one is going to last a long time.
34:12Come on.
34:15Here we go.
34:19County!
34:21Attention!
34:21Attention!
34:23Shoulder!
34:24Hands!
34:26Watch right!
34:28March!
34:52Take your hands off that.
34:54Queen takes it.
34:55Well, if you think that's a queen, look again.
34:57That's a jack.
35:01Honest, these cards all look alike.
35:05It's too noisy.
35:06I can't wait.
35:08I suppose your delicate nerve can't stagger.
35:11I can't wait.
35:11I can't wait.
35:12I can't wait.
35:17That's Oscar.
35:19The shunner!
35:22Look at that.
35:25Don't be so snooty.
35:27You may wish you had this back.
35:29About two more days of this,
35:32This rasp-bitten end of a piece of bread's gonna taste just like a hunk of fruitcake.
35:39It wouldn't last two more days, would it?
35:41Did I tell you this was gonna be a bad one?
35:45I don't mind the days so much.
35:47It's keeping up all night!
35:50Two more days makes a week, kid.
35:52Then you can say you've been on the fire.
35:55You're not scared, are you?
35:57No. I was just asking, that's all.
36:04Want to play some more?
36:06Do you?
36:11Sure.
36:12All right, my deal.
36:15You better get your boot back before Oscar eats that.
36:20The kid's all right.
36:28Thanks.
36:32Baaame.
36:35Yeah, yeah.
36:37Baaame, leave it.
36:38Oh, God!
36:40Can't you see it's Baaame?
36:42He doesn't want to come to war!
36:45No.
36:47No.
36:48It isn't Baaame.
36:50It isn't Baaame!
36:54It's Gamerick!
36:56It's me!
36:57Shut up, will ya?
36:58It's bad enough in here as it is!
37:00Everything.
37:01Everything's all right, Barnes.
37:03You're dreaming.
37:05I'm thinking.
37:06You're just dreaming, I guess.
37:13I'm thinking.
37:13Attack, Hunt!
37:14Headingies!
37:16The rise is getting worse.
37:20The men and two more dugouts gone.
37:28However, we'll do our best to get some food up here by evening.
37:52Help! Help! Help!
38:04Let me out! No!
38:10What did you do that for? Shut up! Grab him!
38:14No! Now, hold it!
38:24Hey!
