00:31Today is an important victory for me and for the UN Human Rights System.
00:43But it by no means erases seven years of detention without charge in prison, under house arrest
00:57and almost five years here in this embassy without sunlight.
01:07Seven years without charge, why my children grew up without me.
01:15That is not something that I can forgive.
01:18It is not something that I can forget.
01:26The inevitable inquiry into what has occurred in this moment of terrible injustice
01:39is something that I hope will be more than just about me and this situation.
01:47Because the reality is detention and extradition without charge has become a feature of the European Union.
01:58A feature which has been exploited, yes, in my case, for political reasons.
02:07But in other cases has subjected many people to terrible injustice.
02:14In Sweden, indefinite detention is a policy.
02:21There is no time limit that someone can be detained without charge.
02:26That is not how we expect a civilised state to behave.
02:33Similarly, extradition without charge is not something that we expect from the rule of law in the United Kingdom.
02:45It is a measure that was introduced as part of the European Union system
02:51to turn the European Union into a federation.
02:54In 2014, in response to my situation and other abuses,
03:02the UK government changed the law
03:04to prevent further extradition without charge from the UK.
03:09But it is still a problem in the rest of the European Union.
03:19I would also like to thank Ecuador, its people, and its asylum system
03:25who have stood by my asylum
03:31despite very intense pressure,
03:35including pressure to use the European Union's trade system
03:41to penalise Ecuadorian exporters.
03:47It is a terrible violation.
