00:00:01Four extraordinary worlds steeped in tradition
00:00:05are opening their doors...
00:00:07I hope it's not haunted.
00:00:08...to four groups of young Brits...
00:00:10I'm a bit nervous now.
00:00:11...ready to take a giant leap out of their comfort zones.
00:00:15I'm just a 24-7 princess.
00:00:17...what happens when a generation raised online...
00:00:20All we care about is how we look.
00:00:22I've really rotted my brain from TikTok.
00:00:24...come face-to-face with regimes built on no-nonsense rules.
00:00:29How long I've got to spend in silence?
00:00:30Actually, more than ten hours.
00:00:33Where loyalty and principles really count...
00:00:36You had your blazer done-off in my school.
00:00:38He was a weirdo.
00:00:39I don't want to do this anymore.
00:00:41...will this unique clash of values...
00:00:43Whatever I was expecting, this is 50%, 100% more.
00:00:46Welcome to hell.
00:00:48...and cultures...
00:00:50...lead to conflict...
00:00:51Everybody can stand right here and shut the f*** up.
00:00:53...or lasting change.
00:00:55There comes a point where it's not fun and cool anymore.
00:00:57And after each unforgettable week...
00:01:00It was amazing.
00:01:01We're top of the world right now.
00:01:02...will either side ever be the same again?
00:01:05I think I've just found three friends.
00:01:07It's been the most funniest, strangest, abnormal week of my life.
00:01:13I feel like I've had an epiphany.
00:01:17This time...
00:01:18Hello.
00:01:19Hello.
00:01:19...three larger-than-life lads who love to party...
00:01:22We do tend to drink silly sometimes.
00:01:24...join an ancient religious brotherhood...
00:01:26In the name of the Father, the Son, the Holy Spirit.
00:01:31...dedicated to a life of simplicity and service to others.
00:01:34It isn't big money or big spending that'll give them happiness.
00:01:38...can young men used to pleasing themselves...
00:01:41It's torture.
00:01:42I haven't been up to 530 in ages.
00:01:44...obey a rigid routine...
00:01:46Yes?
00:01:47...of silence...
00:01:49...prayer...
00:01:51...and hard work.
00:01:52I want to be able to grow up a bit faster.
00:01:55...and could mixing hedonists with holy men...
00:01:58Alan...
00:02:00...deliver some miraculous results.
00:02:02This is today's special.
00:02:03I'm made by myself, yeah.
00:02:04Enjoy it.
00:02:05It makes you think more outside of the world that you live in...
00:02:07...because it's not just you.
00:02:08I feel like my mind is...
00:02:19The Carmelite Priory, Oxford.
00:02:21Home to a nine-strong sacred order...
00:02:26...who've ditched distractions to lead a spiritual life.
00:02:30Life in a monastery entails difficulties, struggles and challenges.
00:02:35Our whole life is prayer.
00:02:38It's about to open its cloistered doors...
00:02:42...to three party-loving lads more interested in having it large...
00:02:46...than the Holy Father.
00:02:49If there's any shaving of the hair involved...
00:02:51...spin this back round and I'm going home...
00:02:52...because this can't come off.
00:02:5423-year-old barber, Max...
00:02:58...who lives in Manchester.
00:02:59Hi, mate.
00:03:00You good?
00:03:00You good?
00:03:01We do tend to drink silly sometimes.
00:03:03When the first one's gone down, it's sort of inevitable, I think.
00:03:06...can never say no to a night out.
00:03:08Oh, I guess we're doing it again then, are we?
00:03:10I think I've diagnosed myself with FOMO, to be honest.
00:03:13We do this every week, mate. We're veterans.
00:03:15When you see everyone around you having a good time, it's impossible to stop.
00:03:18Do you want more or less?
00:03:19You know what, mate? You've given me a pint.
00:03:21He's always the life and soul of any party.
00:03:24I would describe myself as the loudest in the group.
00:03:27There's not really a time when I'm not speaking unless I'm asleep.
00:03:30But he rarely stops to see the world through another's eyes.
00:03:33I've been quite successful for myself in the past year or so,
00:03:36and do live a good life.
00:03:37But I think it would be good for me to get out of my comfort zone.
00:03:42No clue what to expect.
00:03:44Do you think they're trained in, like, jiu-jitsu and stuff?
00:03:47Too many boozy nights out have caused 23-year-old Luke from Hemel Hempstead
00:03:51to take his eye off the ball.
00:03:53I could be very unmotivated.
00:03:55I could throw away my to-do list and then just go and do something else,
00:03:59like going out to a rave.
00:04:02Owner of a fledgling fashion brand,
00:04:04all his profits are currently ploughed into his partying.
00:04:07Spending Β£800 on a night out,
00:04:09you just have that feeling that wants to kind of, you know,
00:04:12throw your money away left, right and centre.
00:04:14When it comes to looking sharp,
00:04:16Luke doesn't care about the price tag.
00:04:19Here we've got the Louis Vuitton skater shoes.
00:04:23They come in at about Β£1,000.
00:04:25I feel like I just want to live my life
00:04:27and enjoy the time I've got while I'm young.
00:04:32We're getting more and more into the countryside, aren't we?
00:04:37Genuinely never been in a farm.
00:04:3924-year-old Glaswegian, Alan,
00:04:41is a personal trainer who doesn't know when to stop.
00:04:44In terms of during the week,
00:04:46I would say I'm pretty responsible.
00:04:47On Saturday, I do turn into a complete degenerate.
00:04:50He has two loves, keeping fit and the opposite sex.
00:04:54Hello, guys.
00:04:55How are you?
00:04:55Welcome to the session.
00:04:57I'm a mother-boy at heart.
00:05:01Whether it's chasing women or knocking back chasers,
00:05:05Alan's always after the next thrill.
00:05:07I'm very much like you only live once,
00:05:10so I got it tattooed on me.
00:05:13The constant chase of dopamine,
00:05:15I never sit down improperly
00:05:17and I'm at one with my feelings
00:05:18because I don't really know how to.
00:05:20But he's reaching party burnout.
00:05:23You'll love the lifestyle.
00:05:24You'll love that crazy lifestyle.
00:05:26Listen, I've had enough of the fast life.
00:05:28I've had enough of the girls.
00:05:29I've had enough of the nightclubs.
00:05:30I want to be at peace.
00:05:36These three hedonists may be looking for inner peace,
00:05:39but are they prepared for this much peace?
00:05:42Being a friar is a 24 hour, seven days a week life.
00:05:48You don't clock in and clock out.
00:05:50When it comes to devotion,
00:05:52this 800-year-old religious order
00:05:55doesn't do things by halves.
00:05:57You forgo marriage and family and children.
00:05:59You don't have a bank account.
00:06:01You don't have your own rooms.
00:06:02Anything that you have, you share.
00:06:04The brotherhood follows a rigid routine.
00:06:07Prayer three times a day,
00:06:09with work and quiet contemplation in between.
00:06:12The life of a friar is a life of simplicity,
00:06:17lived in community and prayer.
00:06:20The three vows we make are the vows of obedience,
00:06:24chastity and poverty.
00:06:29Three vows which are likely to concern the lads.
00:06:33The no hair, the praying, the silence, worries me.
00:06:38You can't exist in Manchester, in a flat,
00:06:41living a high life your whole life.
00:06:42Max's mum hopes the experience
00:06:44will help him step out of his bubble.
00:06:47And I hope you just broaden your horizons
00:06:49on what other people think and feel.
00:06:51I think it will help you grow.
00:06:52I really do.
00:06:53Mum, my pants now.
00:06:57A life without no money can be very difficult
00:07:00for someone who has lived that life with money.
00:07:03Luke's business partner, Marcus,
00:07:05believes a week of poverty
00:07:06will change Luke's excessive mindset.
00:07:09He must certainly needs humbling
00:07:11and just be an opportunity to see
00:07:14how other people do live, you know,
00:07:16and don't have it gifted to him.
00:07:18You thrive off girls' attention.
00:07:21In terms of having an obedience chance to say,
00:07:24I've definitely too far gone.
00:07:25Sorry, Master Monk.
00:07:29Before they get div out,
00:07:31it's time to get something out of their system.
00:07:34Yeah, I think a couple fucks could definitely come out,
00:07:36so maybe I have to say fuck, fuck, fuck.
00:07:38Fuck.
00:07:40Hey, here we are.
00:07:44Fucking hell.
00:07:45Fucking hell, it's massive.
00:07:47It's definitely not a hut.
00:07:48Looks like Max hasn't got it all out just yet.
00:07:52Look at this idea.
00:07:54He ain't living in no poverty.
00:07:56Hopefully it's not haunted though.
00:07:58I'm scared of ghosts.
00:08:00It does look a little bit scary.
00:08:03Like many young people,
00:08:05they may be distracted with social media.
00:08:08They want to party, go out with friends.
00:08:11There's more of an outwardness to them.
00:08:15The thing I probably do want to learn most
00:08:18is seeing what life is like
00:08:19from someone else's perspective.
00:08:22I maybe turn a bit of a blind eye
00:08:24to other people's lifestyles that aren't like mine.
00:08:27The thing I hope to learn this week
00:08:29is to take life a little bit more serious.
00:08:32I'm still young,
00:08:33but I feel like I still have a lot more maturing to do.
00:08:36I think, with my lifestyle,
00:08:38maybe tone it down a wee tiny bit.
00:08:41Yes, boys, you good?
00:08:42I think I've over-packed a bit.
00:08:44How are you?
00:08:45How you doing, mate? I'm Luke.
00:08:46How do we get in?
00:08:47Just going straight through that door.
00:08:49Yeah?
00:08:50All right, you go first.
00:08:51Their holy hosts believe a week of God-given guidance
00:08:54will put these modern men on the right path.
00:08:57We have high hopes that this will impact on them positively.
00:09:02How? We don't know.
00:09:06I suppose they may think that we are strange beings of some sort.
00:09:13Hello?
00:09:15Still to come...
00:09:16How long have I got to spend in silence?
00:09:18Actually, more than ten hours.
00:09:20The lads struggle to stick to the rules...
00:09:24We'll be keeping your phones for you.
00:09:26..and face a frugal fashion challenge.
00:09:30Your flies are undone.
00:09:42Three young hedonists are swapping parties for prayers
00:09:45to spend a week at a remote religious order.
00:09:48We've got a big week to go, mate.
00:09:51Can the friars help them tame their wild ways?
00:09:54Hello.
00:09:55Hello.
00:09:56Lovely to meet you.
00:09:57Yeah, I'm Father Alex.
00:09:58Welcome to the Kamlai Priory.
00:09:59It seems very, like, quiet in here.
00:10:03Yeah, we do try to maintain some kind of quiet.
00:10:06I'm normally very loud, so I'm going to keep the decibels low as I can.
00:10:10We are nine friars in the Priory, and we come from all sorts of backgrounds.
00:10:18So you have three from India, five from Nigeria, and one from Ireland.
00:10:28Oh, wow.
00:10:29Good.
00:10:30Hello, everyone.
00:10:31Hello, hello.
00:10:32How are you?
00:10:33Just here.
00:10:34Lovely to meet you.
00:10:35Luke, Max and Alan will be expected to follow the friars' strict routine.
00:10:39Do we sit?
00:10:40Oh, do we stand up?
00:10:41Yes.
00:10:42Stand?
00:10:42Sorry.
00:10:43Starting with the communal meal.
00:10:47Bless us, O Lord, and things like you, which you are about to receive from your bounty,
00:10:51through Christ our Lord.
00:10:52Amen.
00:10:53Bon Appetit.
00:10:54Merci.
00:10:56It's welcome.
00:10:57As they get stuck into their first supper, Luke's got a burning question.
00:11:02I've seen in the movies that monks are known for, like, karate and stuff.
00:11:08Do you do, like, jiu-jitsu or karate?
00:11:11I've watched the film Bulletproof Monk.
00:11:13That's all I know.
00:11:14And it's the ones that do, like, flying 360 kicks and stuff.
00:11:17They're, like, kung fu pandas.
00:11:20The monks in the films, they wear the robes, but they're, like, very...
00:11:24Uh...
00:11:25No.
00:11:26These friars are more interested in a higher purpose than high kicks.
00:11:31I feel like the thing I will struggle with the most is following rules.
00:11:35Having to do what someone else does on their terms could be quite difficult for me.
00:11:40The ancient Carmelite order believe in service to others
00:11:44and spread the holy word through teaching, hospitality and acts of charity.
00:11:49So, what is the daily routine we're going to be going through this week?
00:11:54We start prayers at 6 and then we conclude at about 7.30.
00:12:02I haven't gotten out of bed until, like, 10am for the last year.
00:12:06Mmm.
00:12:08We go for prayers again at 12.
00:12:10And in the evenings, we go again at 5 for prayer.
00:12:14At about 10, we maintain some silence, no to the next day.
00:12:19Everything we do, whether it's work, whether it's prayer, we do it in silence.
00:12:25On sort of average, how long do you, like, spend in silence?
00:12:29Actually, more than 10 hours.
00:12:33Silence here can be imposing, but it's also so wonderful
00:12:37because the silence gives you the opportunity to listen to your heart beat.
00:12:42Then other times you walk, they also observe some silence.
00:12:47Oh, shit.
00:12:50Rubbish, that.
00:12:51Max will need to swap cursing for self-control to follow the fryer's rules.
00:12:56Any situation where I have to be quiet, big problem for me.
00:12:59I just get an urge to make a noise.
00:13:03I don't know, maybe there's something wrong with me.
00:13:04This silence is a silence of love.
00:13:07It's a silence of supporting you.
00:13:09Well, no-one wants to sit in silence.
00:13:11It's boring.
00:13:14The vow of silence gets a thumbs down.
00:13:18Are we gonna get these?
00:13:19It looks like, uh, like Star Wars.
00:13:22Like Anakin and that.
00:13:23Luke Skywalker.
00:13:23We'll give you the black one.
00:13:24Oh, yeah, the black one.
00:13:25I'll have black one.
00:13:26But the holy couture gets a thumbs up.
00:13:29They were almost as if they were, like, Jedi's.
00:13:32The cloaks, the hoods they were wearing, they were all pretty plight, to be honest with you.
00:13:37So this is your place for the weeks.
00:13:41Though the simple lodging soon bring the lads back to earth.
00:13:44We call our rooms cells.
00:13:47Cells.
00:13:47It's like the B cells.
00:13:49That's where we make spiritual honey.
00:13:52Oh.
00:13:52Mm-hmm.
00:13:56We have the holy bible.
00:13:59Don't think I've really ever opened a bible.
00:14:03Wouldn't really know where to start.
00:14:04Look how there's a lot of pages in here.
00:14:06I have absolutely no idea what we're going into.
00:14:09Which is, one, the beauty, and two, kind of petrifying me.
00:14:15And here is a crucifix.
00:14:17And if I'm not mistaken, that is Jesus himself.
00:14:21Ten hours of the day in silence.
00:14:26I'm such a sociable person.
00:14:28That way of living is crazy to me.
00:14:32Settled in and bedded down, it's a rare early night for these regular ravers.
00:14:39Getting up for sex in the morning for mass.
00:14:43That would be fucking knackered.
00:14:44I can't lie.
00:14:46Not looking for a tip.
00:14:47I'm going to have to stick by them three vows.
00:14:50And I do like going out for fancy dinners, getting new clothes.
00:14:53But I think this week, it's a time for me to get that out of my head and be a
00:14:59monk.
00:15:00The fact that I went to a chapel to meditate in silence with people that I met today
00:15:04doesn't bode well with me at all.
00:15:19Alan, wakey-wakey.
00:15:22The Friars' Day begins before sunrise.
00:15:27Wakey-wakey, Alan.
00:15:30Around the time, these hard-partiers would normally call it a night.
00:15:35Recently, I've been quite bad.
00:15:37We'll end up rolling in at four in the morning.
00:15:39You wake up the next day and you're like, why did I do this?
00:15:42Yo, Max.
00:15:43At six in the morning, we gather in the chapel for prayer.
00:15:47It's a very meaningful activity and there is joy in doing that.
00:15:56I think the hours of prayer they might find difficult.
00:16:03Am I church ready?
00:16:06I don't think you need to be ready.
00:16:08The lads will be expected to attend chapel three times a day.
00:16:12Hear the Lord who saves us.
00:16:14In the name of the Father, the Son and the Holy Spirit.
00:16:20Let us come before him giving thanks.
00:16:23With songs, let us hear the Lord.
00:16:26Prayer time, boys.
00:16:28This is where our life changes, isn't it?
00:16:30For he is our God and we the people who belong to his pasture.
00:16:35Father Alex hopes this sacred space will show the lads there's more to life than a big night out.
00:16:41Amen.
00:16:43My hope is that they will experience prayer and peace and appreciate their own deeper hunger for a meaningful life.
00:16:56All I want to do is talk.
00:16:58There's just too much energy building up and the longer I'm sitting in that quiet environment for, the longer it
00:17:03wants to come out.
00:17:05When we are at prayer, respect our way of life, so it will not be chatting or answering the phone.
00:17:15Just to have a certain decorum that is befitting for such a gathering.
00:17:32It would just be me, wouldn't it? Everyone sitting there in silence.
00:17:36Got Father asleep next to me, that would probably shit him up.
00:17:40I don't know how they do it every single day of their life and I'm only one day in.
00:17:44I don't know.
00:17:50Keen to make sure Max and the other lads stay focused for the rest of the week.
00:17:54Just one little rule about phones.
00:17:58Father Alex decides to take temptation off the table.
00:18:02For this period you are with us, we'll be keeping your phones for you.
00:18:08So, do we get them back at night time?
00:18:10Uh, no. At the end of the week.
00:18:12A week without their mobiles will be uncharted territory.
00:18:17I spend a lot of time on my phone.
00:18:20I'm usually in the routine of always doing something, so when I'm not, I'll just be sitting in my bed
00:18:24scrolling on TikTok.
00:18:26It's always just next to you to the point that if it buzzes, I can't just, you know, don't pick
00:18:32it up.
00:18:33After morning prayers, the friars tackle their daily chores.
00:18:37I'm happy to do whatever.
00:18:39Yeah, I don't mind.
00:18:40I think I'm a pretty good bed maker.
00:18:42For the priory's brotherhood, these basic jobs aren't just about keeping the place clean.
00:18:48Keeping ourselves grounded in simplicity and truth, that's what work is.
00:18:53They are a daily lesson in humility.
00:18:56If a person will not work, they should not eat.
00:18:59It's that fundamental. It's food for the soul.
00:19:03A lesson Father Liam hopes his thrill-seeking guests will take on board.
00:19:07Hopefully there's no spiders up here.
00:19:09While Alan and Father Clement tidy the priory's messy attic.
00:19:13One day a year they do it, it's the day they pick me.
00:19:16My mum would be real happy watching this.
00:19:18Luke and Max help Father Noel clear the cobwebs from the guest rooms.
00:19:23Training's paid off, Mum.
00:19:26Oh, my God, look. I like eggs.
00:19:28Fashion brand owner Luke struggles with work-life balance, and it's harming his business.
00:19:34Are they moving?
00:19:35They have spiders eggs.
00:19:36That can't be coffee beans.
00:19:37I find it difficult to focus. I feel like I've got a very short attention span.
00:19:42Eventually I just end up spending a week going out and not actually doing any work.
00:19:47Mate, this is what you call a thorough deep clean.
00:19:51He's hoping his stay at the priory will be the reset he needs.
00:19:54Oh.
00:19:55I'm very happy. I really enjoy what I do.
00:19:58Like, I love it a lot. Like, I love it too much.
00:20:01And, yeah, I'm trying to find a balance, trying to sort myself out, really.
00:20:05I am about 90% fulfilled with my happiness in life.
00:20:09I would love to get more serious. I feel like I don't have enough seriousness in my life at the
00:20:13moment.
00:20:14And so I get that windowsill.
00:20:16Max says he doesn't believe in God, but he does believe in speaking his mind.
00:20:21So, what idea do you have of anything about Christianity?
00:20:24That Jesus died on the cross and came back to life?
00:20:25Yes.
00:20:26Since Jesus, who else has come back to life when they die? No one.
00:20:30And that's one thing.
00:20:31And then my extension took a year to build, but God built the world in seven days.
00:20:34How did he do it?
00:20:35Can't build the world in seven days if my extension took a year to build, you know what I mean?
00:20:41Whilst Father Noel lets Max's revelation sink in...
00:20:44Right, you ready?
00:20:46Luke's efforts to get more serious haven't lasted long.
00:20:50What do you want, Mush?
00:20:53What's this? Knock down ginger?
00:20:55I bet he's in there.
00:20:57I want to be able to kind of grow up a bit faster.
00:21:03Oh, if you ran off, there's a mattress in the way.
00:21:07I'm still young, but I feel like I still have a lot more maturing to do.
00:21:12Where is he?
00:21:14And I still need to get to that next step.
00:21:18I'm the invisible man.
00:21:23I remember when they entered the chapel, they suddenly put their leg on the other leg and they laugh.
00:21:29And I very rarely have encountered things like this.
00:21:33As night falls, the friars retreat to the library to share their first impressions and plot their next move.
00:21:40I was talking to Max and I just asked him, why exactly do you not believe in God?
00:21:45He said, because he's an atheist.
00:21:48When it comes to the lads' spiritual growth, it's clear they've got their work cut out.
00:21:54They're not even Christians, so they don't subscribe to any religion.
00:21:58I was a bit apprehensive how they will fit into our prayer time, especially the meditation.
00:22:06I could see that the chapel posed a challenge for them and I noticed that they struggled with that.
00:22:15Father Liam has seen it all before.
00:22:18He believes the lads need a guiding hand to get on the right path and has a plan to help
00:22:22them.
00:22:23Well, most people, when they come first to the priory, they're very uneasy.
00:22:27Introduction to the Christian life has to be gradual.
00:22:30And that way they begin to genuinely experience a new meaning.
00:22:35Something has been sown in them, so I just uphold them in prayer and God will do the rest.
00:22:47Still to come.
00:22:48Alvis Netball.
00:22:50Father Liam's master plan begins with a lesson on poverty.
00:22:53That looks good, doesn't it?
00:22:55It could have been worse. Anything could have been worse.
00:22:57Silence is your friend.
00:22:59But Max struggles to see the light.
00:23:01It was dreadful.
00:23:03Probably the worst part of being here.
00:23:20The friars in a remote Oxfordshire priory are on a mission to persuade three young men to swap last orders
00:23:26for holy orders.
00:23:30Family values are beginning to erode in our society and it's even worse with the Gen Z's.
00:23:39Social media is not the reality of the life.
00:23:43They have a plan to teach them some new life lessons with a rigid schedule of prayers.
00:23:48How long was that, Father?
00:23:49That was an hour.
00:23:50Oh, really?
00:23:50That was one hour?
00:23:51That is not normal. I feel like Shaun of the Dead, mate.
00:23:55Fellowship.
00:23:56Meditation is a means to prayer.
00:23:58I've never meditated before either.
00:24:00Do you fall asleep when you do it sometimes?
00:24:02Yes.
00:24:04You good at washing up?
00:24:06And chores.
00:24:07Alan's got the most important job.
00:24:10Today, Father Liam has also spotted the perfect opportunity to challenge them on a core karma-like vow.
00:24:17Poverty.
00:24:18I'm ready. Let's go.
00:24:20Poverty is very much a vow of simplicity.
00:24:24Road trip.
00:24:25To shed the many things we may want to possess that then become a burden on that journey to live
00:24:32a simple life.
00:24:37Are we going in the shopping centre?
00:24:40When we go shopping, it's expected that a friar will have a mentality of poverty.
00:24:47Keeping his mind and his heart close to the basics of life.
00:24:53Seeing that the lads didn't bring appropriate work wear for the week,
00:24:57he's setting them a thrifty challenge at this charity shop.
00:25:01You'll have a budget of Β£15 each to get your clothes.
00:25:04Let's go in. Let's go in.
00:25:06Let's go splash the cash again.
00:25:08So here we are.
00:25:09It's a long way from what they'd usually spend.
00:25:12The clothes that I sort of wear, you're not getting an outfit under Β£100. No chance.
00:25:17To be honest, we have Β£15 is mental.
00:25:20Shop till you drop.
00:25:21A critical hope is that they're going to see that it isn't big money or big spending that'll give them
00:25:29happiness.
00:25:30You need to pay my payday choices now.
00:25:32Happiness comes from much simpler human things.
00:25:35Are we getting shoes as well?
00:25:37Well, that's up to you. It's your shopping. You've got your budget.
00:25:41Pleasure, possession, power no longer satisfies.
00:25:45People are beginning to ask questions and it always begins with,
00:25:49I want to know, why am I not feeling satisfied?
00:25:53Normally, Luke spends first and worries later.
00:25:57That looks good. That looks good, doesn't it?
00:25:59Usually, going shopping, I'll just go out, find something I like.
00:26:03If it's good, I'll get it.
00:26:05What have you not bought enough of?
00:26:07Mate, everything.
00:26:08Actually, I've got enough pants, that's it.
00:26:10Right, well, that's a good start then, so I wouldn't be buying them for the chance.
00:26:16At home, Luke's nan is losing patience with his expensive tastes.
00:26:21You've got to stop spending money that you haven't got.
00:26:23Yeah, I can't be spending money all the time.
00:26:25No. It's not good.
00:26:26No, I worry that you're going to get into debt and into bother.
00:26:30It's a big worry.
00:26:32The most I've dropped on a night out, I'd probably say about Β£500, Β£600.
00:26:36It's not a nice feeling to wake up to, but when you've had a lot of drinks,
00:26:40it doesn't seem like a bad decision to do.
00:26:43It'll do you good.
00:26:44Not to have the money, then you may learn to stop spending what you haven't got.
00:26:49But spending big on clothes and nights out has meant his brand suffers.
00:26:54Usually, what goes in my bank comes straight out.
00:26:57Shopping on a budget might be a struggle for Luke.
00:27:00Ready?
00:27:01Three, two, one.
00:27:01But Alan's quids in.
00:27:05Your flies are undone.
00:27:08And it might be more Primark than Prada.
00:27:12Oh, mate.
00:27:13But Max has also bagged an outfit.
00:27:15What a steal, eh?
00:27:16Oh, you've done it, mate.
00:27:18Alvis netball.
00:27:20You killed that, bro.
00:27:21That is really good.
00:27:24It's lightweight.
00:27:25You can move in it.
00:27:30It comes with a tissue.
00:27:32That's disgusting.
00:27:35Let's leave that in there for now, should we?
00:27:37Yeah.
00:27:39Oh, I've come out trumped in that shop.
00:27:41That is the bollocks, what I've got.
00:27:44Meanwhile, Luke is still struggling with the work wear brief.
00:27:47We've got a little set on here.
00:27:48What do you think about this?
00:27:50You can't wear that when working.
00:27:52Why?
00:27:52I mean, if you're out raking leaves tomorrow morning, are you going to wear that?
00:27:56It was definitely an experience that I have not had before.
00:27:59It was difficult.
00:28:01That'll do the job, won't it?
00:28:02I mean, it could have been worse.
00:28:03The outfit matches, it's fine.
00:28:05But I'm definitely jealous of Max's outfit.
00:28:08So what have you learned from this experience here?
00:28:15By not putting a priority on the exterior,
00:28:19it's something interior is being fostered.
00:28:22That's the idea, you see.
00:28:23These are words that sort of come into my small capacity brain
00:28:27that just come out the other side and I kind of forget.
00:28:32Max might have missed the meaning in Father Liam's task,
00:28:36but spendthrift Luke has been paying attention.
00:28:39Today, what I bought out of what I need
00:28:41is definitely something that I need to learn.
00:28:43I'm learning a lot about moderation already
00:28:45and we are literally a day in.
00:28:59With one life lesson starting to sink in,
00:29:02the lads now face the friar's next challenge,
00:29:05finding serenity.
00:29:07I left my coat in there last time,
00:29:09so I hope you'll be there and nick it.
00:29:11One of them did say he liked it.
00:29:12He's going to be wearing it today at the chapel.
00:29:14Our rule tells us to meditate on the Word of God day and night.
00:29:18An hour is meditation, an hour in silence before God.
00:29:22It's the place where your weaknesses manifest,
00:29:25where your struggles are manifest.
00:29:27So now, at this point, the community will be entering
00:29:31into a time of prayer and silence.
00:29:35This morning, they must take part in a silent meditation.
00:29:40Silence is your friend.
00:29:43The friars want them to block out distractions
00:29:45and focus on deeper thoughts.
00:29:50I wasn't looking forward to it,
00:29:52but I didn't think it would be as difficult as it was today.
00:29:55But it's more a case of deep sleep.
00:29:58I saw, like, Alan next to me, and he was just conked out.
00:30:03Max was catching Z's, he was conked out as well.
00:30:06I'd noticed there was a wee bit, sort of,
00:30:09eyes were closing over, yawning a wee bit.
00:30:12I can never, like, accidentally walk up
00:30:14and almost shout at myself.
00:30:16And if you can't focus on the person of Jesus,
00:30:20just bear in mind the great spirit of God.
00:30:23I sort of woke up with the driest mouth ever,
00:30:26like I'd been sucking on a flip-flop.
00:30:28It was dreadful.
00:30:30Probably the worst part of being here.
00:30:34And to open up many things to you,
00:30:36but it all has to begin slowly and gradually.
00:30:41I can't think of anyone who would enjoy doing that,
00:30:43other than a friar.
00:30:44Like, it's the worst thing possible.
00:30:49It would be difficult for them.
00:30:51It would be challenging.
00:30:52It may not happen in a day.
00:30:53It may not happen in two days.
00:30:55It might even be towards the end
00:30:57that they'll begin to get into the rhythm
00:30:59of the life we live.
00:31:04Get my five a day.
00:31:05Sorry for being late.
00:31:07While the lads struggle to embrace
00:31:08the Priory's spiritual program,
00:31:11personal trainer Alan's normal physical routine
00:31:13has been neglected.
00:31:15Did you miss going to the gym?
00:31:17I've missed it for sure.
00:31:18It's almost like the same as you.
00:31:20Like, if you don't go to, like, say, prayer,
00:31:22you kind of feel out of place.
00:31:24It's a good way to start your day.
00:31:25So, who's volunteering?
00:31:28Let me take them for a personal training session.
00:31:32Keep it going, let's go, guys.
00:31:34Let's go. Come on.
00:31:35We're going to go straight in our squats.
00:31:36So here, all the way down, all the way up.
00:31:39Let's go.
00:31:39Come on, let's go, guys. Let's go.
00:31:41Alan normally works out six days a week.
00:31:44Look, step back a wee tiny bit, right?
00:31:46We're going to go all the way out.
00:31:48So he decides it's the Friars' turn
00:31:50to be put through a strict regime.
00:31:52Keep it going, keep it going, keep it going.
00:31:54What would you say on this one?
00:31:54Right, OK, take 30 seconds.
00:31:56That was your warm-up.
00:31:58What?
00:31:59When I was younger,
00:32:00I was always this sort of nerdy-looking kid
00:32:02without actually having the smart to it.
00:32:05So that was a lose-lose situation.
00:32:07So I'm working on my physique
00:32:08and then everything else then comes with it.
00:32:11When you're working out, you're training hard,
00:32:13you look after yourself.
00:32:14If you look good, you feel good.
00:32:17PT Alan has monetised his muscles,
00:32:20but his non-stop social life has left him worse for wear.
00:32:24I moved out when I was 19
00:32:26and I was drinking every weekend
00:32:28and just got to a point
00:32:29where I wouldn't have enough money
00:32:30to pay for rent this month
00:32:31and then I was like,
00:32:32oh, my God, what am I doing?
00:32:34Burnt out by his hard partying ways,
00:32:37Alan had only one option.
00:32:39Get all the way down, hold it down, hold it down, hold it.
00:32:42Just thought the world was going to end
00:32:44and then I phoned my mum being like,
00:32:46can I come back?
00:32:46It's, oh, not good.
00:32:49Five squats, five squats, no jumps, five squats.
00:32:51But despite moving back to his mum's,
00:32:54on the go, Alan's life still hasn't calmed down.
00:32:57If I'm not doing something, I'll find something to do.
00:33:00Hey, hey, hey, hey, hey!
00:33:02I do enjoy going out socialising with my friends,
00:33:06going and talking to girls, stuff like that.
00:33:09He's starting to realise
00:33:10that he needs to slow down to move forward.
00:33:14The fact that I never have the chance
00:33:16to stop and think about things.
00:33:19Am I just holding that there?
00:33:20Yeah.
00:33:20I'm hoping I can learn the ability to be quiet
00:33:24and switch off, to be honest with you.
00:33:27Because my head is 100 miles an hour.
00:33:30Yes.
00:33:31Well done, guys.
00:33:31See your arse.
00:33:32Thank you, then.
00:33:33Now we won.
00:33:34Well done.
00:33:37While the Friars hope their lifestyle
00:33:39will rub off on their young guests...
00:33:41Oh, wow.
00:33:42That's that little podcast room.
00:33:43They've spotted something this switched-on trio could teach them.
00:33:47Now, I am a goon in terms of multimedia.
00:33:51Well, that's crazy. I did not expect any of this.
00:33:53But these young men, it's second nature to them.
00:33:56They're part of this generation.
00:33:58It's also a chance for the Friars to show Max, Luke and Alan
00:34:01the value of helping their community.
00:34:04Yeah, I didn't think you'd be so teched up with all your gadgets
00:34:06and you've even got your own logo on the wall.
00:34:09The Friars are tech-savvy, live-streaming mass
00:34:12and creating content to spread the good word.
00:34:16Even the Pope has a Twitter handle.
00:34:19Aware that all three lads rely on social media
00:34:22to promote their businesses,
00:34:24Brother John Bosco wants them to help get more clicks
00:34:27for the Carmelites.
00:34:28Can I challenge you to create content for TikTok or Instagram?
00:34:32I'm sure there's definitely something we can do, yeah.
00:34:34Yeah.
00:34:34We'll have to have a think.
00:34:36Like the original influencer Jesus,
00:34:39the Friars are always looking for more followers.
00:34:42Let's go for it.
00:34:43See all the brains out here, yeah?
00:34:44I do actually have an idea.
00:34:45And Brother John Bosco
00:34:47hopes the boys can help the Priory go viral.
00:34:56It isn't long before inspiration strikes.
00:34:59Where is it?
00:35:00Oh, that one.
00:35:01And the lads prove they can move in mysterious ways of their own.
00:35:05That is a beefy staircase.
00:35:07That works perfect.
00:35:09Feel like we're putting together a master plan.
00:35:11Yeah.
00:35:11So what, one by one, hoods up, no-one knows who's who.
00:35:14Slowly bring their hoods up.
00:35:16Dance area.
00:35:17Yeah.
00:35:17Here's the stage.
00:35:18But the Friars might take some persuading.
00:35:22I'm John Bosco.
00:35:23Takes the stage.
00:35:24Get off.
00:35:25Does something, and then goes off camera.
00:35:26And then he just walks off.
00:35:27Right, and what are you doing, mate?
00:35:31Yeah, all right, all right.
00:35:32Nice game plan, mate.
00:35:36Still to come.
00:35:37OK, you could stop there probably farther, Alex.
00:35:39Can the lads get likes for the Lord?
00:35:41Hee-hee!
00:35:44And will the Friars persuade them to put their wild ways on pause?
00:35:48It's just crazy.
00:35:49I've never experienced anything like this.
00:36:00Deep in rural Oxfordshire, Luke, Alan and Max have hatched a plan to help their monastic hosts connect with the
00:36:07younger generation.
00:36:09They've taught us so many things since being here, and our way to give back would be to help them
00:36:13with what we know.
00:36:16Yes!
00:36:17John Bosco!
00:36:18Their plan is to create an attention-grabbing viral video that shows a different side of the brotherhood.
00:36:24Mommy!
00:36:25The three lads know all too well the power of social media.
00:36:29Since I started doing my barbering and my social media, they come hand in hand.
00:36:34First, they need to pitch the idea.
00:36:39We're gonna have each person with their hoods up until they get to the floor.
00:36:43You take your hood off and you do a dance of your choice, and then walk off camera.
00:36:47Uh, Alan's gonna demo for you quickly.
00:36:52Hee-hee!
00:36:56It's a long way from silent meditation, but brother John Bosco has a compromise.
00:37:01I think we will go with some of them, but not all of them.
00:37:04OK.
00:37:05And so we come down, make a gesture, not necessarily to dance.
00:37:10OK.
00:37:10And then say a quote from one of our Carmelite saints.
00:37:14I do quite like that.
00:37:16As we have not got our phones, we'll need a phone.
00:37:19All right, you got this.
00:37:20I know, I know you have.
00:37:22Troops assemble.
00:37:23OK, you could stop there probably, Father Alex.
00:37:26As they are more JC than Gen Z,
00:37:32their disarming dance moves come with a dose of scripture.
00:37:35Prayer is nothing else than an intimate sharing with friends.
00:37:40LAUGHTER
00:37:43With spirits lifted, it's going to need a couple of goes...
00:37:48You can't stop it!
00:37:51..to get the perfect shot.
00:37:54LAUGHTER
00:37:57Oh, my God!
00:37:59Oh, my God!
00:38:00That's so good.
00:38:01That was very good.
00:38:02Well done.
00:38:03Well done.
00:38:05If laughs mean likes, the boys are smashing it.
00:38:11A few tweaks from TikTok's answer to Tarantino...
00:38:14You happy with that?
00:38:15I'm happy with that.
00:38:17Thank you very much.
00:38:18..and the mini masterpiece is ready.
00:38:28Giving back to them has definitely, you know,
00:38:31hit deep with me inside me as well.
00:38:34Nothing disturb you, nothing frighten you.
00:38:37All things are passing.
00:38:39There's now a lot of evangelisation happens in the social media.
00:38:44That's also worth getting the youth, the young people as well.
00:38:48I'm really impressed with what we've done.
00:38:50Everyone's just absolutely smashed it today.
00:38:56Prayer and contemplation.
00:38:58This is what we are founded for.
00:39:05We all had a laugh doing it.
00:39:06I don't think anyone expected it to sort of be as funny as it was.
00:39:09It should hopefully do well for them.
00:39:22Go, let's go.
00:39:23T-minus two minutes.
00:39:25Six on the dot.
00:39:27New dawn and a new day, mate.
00:39:30And another morning mass.
00:39:33We've got two minutes, otherwise the class is late and we'll get kicked out.
00:39:41I'm enjoying it.
00:39:42I feel like my mind is free.
00:39:45Actually having a wee bit of, like, sort of morning downtime
00:39:48where you can think about your thoughts and stuff like that
00:39:50might actually be beneficial,
00:39:51so I might take that into my everyday life.
00:39:54And Luke's suddenly seeing the benefits of laying off the late nights.
00:39:58I feel fresh, I feel clear, no brain fog.
00:40:02Yeah, yeah, it's very rewarding.
00:40:05But Max is yet to be converted.
00:40:08It's torture.
00:40:10Up at 5.30, sit there for about an hour and a half.
00:40:13It was not my ideal morning, to be honest with you.
00:40:16A brief moment of peace from the Priory's schedule
00:40:19gives the lads a chance to confess their feelings about the Friars.
00:40:23The more we've got to know them, it's, like, a little bit less, like, intense
00:40:27and, like, they're actually having a laugh and stuff like that.
00:40:29Their little community, that sort of, say, all they've got
00:40:33that they're happy with and they're content.
00:40:35Mm.
00:40:36And that's crazy.
00:40:37They're up every single morning, 6am,
00:40:40serving for someone else, serving for a purpose.
00:40:43So, it's kind of eye-opening, isn't it?
00:40:45But they're also doing it for each other as well.
00:40:48Like, it's just crazy.
00:40:49I've never experienced anything like this.
00:40:51Yes.
00:40:51Or met anyone like them.
00:40:54The fact that I'm seeing, like, all the fathers
00:40:57and everyone gathered together for dinner is very, very refreshing.
00:41:01And that's like a sense of belonging in there.
00:41:02Exactly, yeah, yeah.
00:41:03They're all individuals but living the same life
00:41:05and they actually are, like, their own family, innit?
00:41:07This unusual little family is beginning to make a big impression.
00:41:12Growing up, I've never sat around a dinner table
00:41:14with, like, a mother and father figure together.
00:41:16It's a really, really nice feeling for me to have that loving feeling.
00:41:22Break over, it's back to work.
00:41:26Oh.
00:41:27Hello.
00:41:28I like your rocking clothes.
00:41:30That's the way to do it.
00:41:33Cleaning this, this is nice to godliness.
00:41:36We're giving it a pro-clean for Christ.
00:41:38And then he respects you even more.
00:41:40Oh, this looks like a whole bunch of fun.
00:41:44Surely.
00:41:45We are going to arrange the linens.
00:41:48It's a busy house.
00:41:49There's nobody lazy in this house.
00:41:52Father Liam is introducing Luke to a new concept,
00:41:56mopping the floor.
00:41:57If you take that starter over from that side...
00:42:00Yeah.
00:42:00..and I'll take this side of the room...
00:42:02Yeah.
00:42:02I haven't done something like this, I think, ever.
00:42:05Right.
00:42:07This domestic demo has an ulterior motive.
00:42:11Father Liam wants to discover more about Luke's home life.
00:42:14How would you characterise your relationships with your own parents?
00:42:18I'm in, like, a divided family,
00:42:19so a lot of stuff went on when I was younger.
00:42:22Growing up, I spent most of the time with my mother.
00:42:25I didn't really see my father a lot.
00:42:27One weekend I was living with my dad
00:42:30and we hear an unexpected knock on the door
00:42:32and it ended up being a squad of police officers
00:42:36that come and raided his house.
00:42:38We was very, very scared.
00:42:39We didn't know what was happening.
00:42:40My father ended up being taken away by the police.
00:42:43Yeah, I didn't hear from him for about three years.
00:42:47At that point, I did think that I'm never going to see him again.
00:42:51Many people have father wounds, you know?
00:42:55Sometimes sons and fathers are left in deep division.
00:42:59Where it can be resolved, very beautiful,
00:43:01because the father and the son in the Trinity,
00:43:04it's the most beautiful unity.
00:43:05At the time, it was quite hard.
00:43:08I was a bit of a bad boy, I suppose.
00:43:12I was in and out of schools around the area,
00:43:14distracted a lot, trying to be the class clown,
00:43:18very hyper, running around all the time,
00:43:21trying to be the centre of attention.
00:43:22Where would you like to be in your relationship with your father?
00:43:26We are taking kind of baby steps
00:43:28to get to where I wished I could be with him,
00:43:31to be able to, you know, sit down and have a chat with him,
00:43:33you know, properly.
00:43:34I love the humanity.
00:43:36You're saying it is mending in small steps.
00:43:39Yeah.
00:43:40Will this affect the way you want to be a dad?
00:43:43Definitely.
00:43:44I want to be the parents I wish I had,
00:43:46just be a whole better version of what I wanted.
00:43:49Father Liam has a mad dad energy.
00:43:52It's okay, I'll do it for you.
00:43:54It's going to definitely allow me to kind of go up to my dad
00:43:56and have a conversation with him
00:43:58and just talk to him about kind of what's been going on in my life
00:44:01and maybe connect with him a little bit more than I had been before.
00:44:05It's good to share this, Richard,
00:44:06and thank you for being so open.
00:44:08Yeah.
00:44:08Thank you so much.
00:44:09Thank you so much, Father.
00:44:10Good.
00:44:13Oh!
00:44:14Wow!
00:44:15So far, it's been prayer, eat, work, repeat.
00:44:22And now the friars want to show the lads
00:44:25that they don't have to take their habits off to have a good time.
00:44:29We do enjoy life.
00:44:31We celebrate life.
00:44:33You know, we enjoy the company of each other.
00:44:35We have great parties in the community.
00:44:39Ciao, hey.
00:44:39Come on.
00:44:40Ciao, hey.
00:44:41Just...
00:44:44The champion is making his way in.
00:44:46I want to be back.
00:44:47The best table tennis player are between Noel and myself, I can say.
00:44:55Noel, no, no, no.
00:45:00Oh!
00:45:01The fact that we bonded so well and we're completely different people,
00:45:06it's just absolutely insane.
00:45:08I've seen someone in quick hands.
00:45:09I've seen someone in quick hands.
00:45:11And these hedonists are beginning to see the benefits of living with these holy men.
00:45:16A week ago, I didn't think that, you know, we'd be able to get so close and have so much
00:45:21in common.
00:45:23Yeah, I think the vikers have got an incline, they're all vikers.
00:45:28So, I'm going to take that and run to the hill with it.
00:45:32Thanks.
00:45:35Still to come.
00:45:36All right, let's see what you can do today.
00:45:39The boys have set their toughest test yet.
00:45:42Oh, slight bit of pressure, I didn't think I would.
00:45:44And Max has an epiphany.
00:45:46Cushions.
00:45:46In a world where you can be anything, be kindly.
00:45:59Three young men, used to burning their candles at both ends, are settling into their priory stay.
00:46:06Good morning.
00:46:07Good morning.
00:46:09After four days of intense religious instruction, Father Liam's decided it's time to step things up.
00:46:15Today, you'll be engaging with something around supporting those who have little.
00:46:21And let's see how that affects and engages you.
00:46:24He wants to see if Max, Luke and Alan can walk the Carmelite walk when the brothers aren't watching.
00:46:30We are not here for ourselves.
00:46:32The whole purpose of our being here is for others.
00:46:37Go on, Alan.
00:46:38I'm glad I'm only little.
00:46:39He sent them on a secret mission.
00:46:42Destination unknown.
00:46:43I don't even know where we are.
00:46:45We're a church, mate.
00:46:46Where's the entrance?
00:46:48Here to reveal all is Gary, whose family run the iColin Smith Foundation.
00:46:53Hello.
00:46:54Good afternoon.
00:46:55Which has helped feed Oxford's homeless for 35 years.
00:46:59Let me get you kicked out with some stuff.
00:47:01Yeah.
00:47:01Let's go.
00:47:01And today, he has three brand new volunteers.
00:47:06For young men more used to the high life than real life, working in Gary's soup kitchen will be a
00:47:11huge test.
00:47:13Tie me up.
00:47:14Why can't you tie yourself up?
00:47:16It has become like tradition to engage in charity work, to help those in need.
00:47:21I feel like focusing my time on other people's lives or what's going on in the world isn't really something
00:47:27that I'm interested in.
00:47:28Have you chopped an onion?
00:47:30I have, yeah.
00:47:30But I don't know what side to cut before it makes your eyes cry.
00:47:33Living in Manchester, there are a lot of homeless people.
00:47:36But you get so caught up in your bubble and what you're doing.
00:47:39So I sort of, yeah, turn a blind eye to all that.
00:47:41So do you do this full time? What is the script?
00:47:44My mum started it. She just felt, in her heart, just cooked for people.
00:47:48That's what she'd been doing from when she was young.
00:47:50And that's what, for you guys, to know that life isn't just, just you.
00:47:54Life is bigger than what you think it is.
00:47:58Homelessness is growing in Oxford.
00:48:00But Gary and his family are serving hope one hot meal at a time.
00:48:04On average, how many homeless people do you have in here at one time eating?
00:48:0840.
00:48:09Oh, wow, a lot.
00:48:09Doors open tomorrow, so today is all about getting the food ready.
00:48:14How do you cook with 40 people, mate?
00:48:16I can't make a breakfast for, like, three of us.
00:48:18Yeah.
00:48:19Whoever peels the potato the fastest...
00:48:21When's...
00:48:22Can I peel two potatoes before you peel one?
00:48:24He's gonna slice his hand up.
00:48:25Got him on the ropes here.
00:48:26Watch your fingers, bro.
00:48:28Fuck!
00:48:30How does it, you know, still make you feel after all this time of doing it?
00:48:33So that it's not just me.
00:48:35This is my wife, my son, my brother, my sister.
00:48:39They all help.
00:48:40Helping other people is what we do.
00:48:43In a world where you can be anything, be kind, eh?
00:48:47Back in Manchester, Max is at the centre of his social scene.
00:48:50I would describe myself as quite outgoing, definitely extroverted.
00:48:55Love having a conversation.
00:48:56I could talk the back legs off a donkey for hours.
00:48:58But he wasn't always so popular.
00:49:00School wasn't always sort of sunshine and rainbows.
00:49:03It was rough.
00:49:05When Max started secondary school, he was badly bullied.
00:49:10That's you starting school.
00:49:12And you look really happy.
00:49:13But, like, behind that smile, what did you really feel?
00:49:16Yeah, just broken.
00:49:18A picture can show a certain image, but behind that is a million different stories that no-one is gonna
00:49:26know.
00:49:26Did you feel safe in school?
00:49:28No, I hated going.
00:49:28I just did not want to walk through the gates in the morning.
00:49:31It's really sad, isn't it?
00:49:32I would rather stay here where I knew nothing could go wrong.
00:49:35It was tough.
00:49:36Tough years.
00:49:38But you're resilient.
00:49:39You're very resilient.
00:49:42As crap as it was, as rough as it was, and how shit I felt, it's just made me who
00:49:48I am today.
00:49:49I just live my life, like, how I wanna live it, and just, that's the way it is.
00:49:54But Max can be so busy looking after number one, he sometimes forgets life's not all about him.
00:50:01Being in my, like, sort of little bubble, I sort of turn a blind eye to sort of how other
00:50:07people do live their life.
00:50:08But maybe I should just consider other people a little bit more.
00:50:11I guess it does feel good coming to a community like this and helping them.
00:50:16Even though we haven't given anyone food yet or anything, it makes you think more outside of the world that
00:50:21you live in, because it's not just you.
00:50:23Pay it forward every time. It's gonna make a massive difference to people.
00:50:26I think that's probably what Father Liam wanted us to experience today.
00:50:30So whatever you learn this morning, take it. Don't forget that. Run with it. And pass it on.
00:50:36Gary who runs the soup kitchen was so nice. You could tell he had so much room for just love
00:50:43in his heart.
00:50:44Well, thanks for coming. And if it's okay with you, need you back tomorrow morning.
00:50:51This evening, Father Liam has a big test for the boys at a local church, where he's often called to
00:50:56minister.
00:50:58The parish priest here has given us access to his church and sanctuary.
00:51:03There'll be people there as well, worshipping and honouring God, and therefore we're going to go in with that disposition
00:51:09and that respect.
00:51:13Welcome to the sanctuary.
00:51:16Alan, Max and Luke will be front and centre helping out with the Mass.
00:51:20And it's vital they don't embarrass Father Liam or the Brotherhood.
00:51:24Before we start Mass, this is the lectionary from which somebody in the congregation is going to read the word
00:51:31of God to the people.
00:51:32So, Alan, you'll be taking that out. And Max, this is the missile which is placed on the altar.
00:51:45All week the boys have struggled to take their prayers seriously.
00:51:49Now they must show the respect needed in front of the whole congregation.
00:51:55The Lamb of God, you take away the sins of the world. Have mercy on us.
00:52:02Father Liam concludes his sermon with a very special message.
00:52:07Alan, Max and Luke, I pray for each of you, that as you've had the courage to come on these
00:52:13days
00:52:13and then carrying out the tasks of these days, you've put yourself out of your comfort zone.
00:52:18As we pray for the Holy Spirit to come upon these gifts, may it come upon you.
00:52:24There was people in there that we'd never met and didn't have a clue we were going to be there.
00:52:27And he still singled us out and made us feel special.
00:52:31And for your families at home, I pray for healing, peace, restoration and strength.
00:52:39What he was saying about my family, I took that in and that was really lovely.
00:52:43And your grace in our lives through Christ our Lord.
00:52:47Amen.
00:52:48Even atheist Max is moved by these particular prayers.
00:52:52Thank you, Father Liam.
00:52:53And especially how you wish that health and happiness upon our families.
00:52:56I think it touched the spot for us.
00:52:58Bless your future and your families.
00:53:01Back at the Priory, Max is seeing the benefits of life outside his bubble.
00:53:06Nothing here that we've done and nothing about how they live their life is about I.
00:53:11It makes you consider other people's feelings and what you can do for other people to almost feel better about
00:53:16yourself.
00:53:16Whilst Alan's feeling positive about returning to help feed the homeless.
00:53:21If we can help out just a wee tiny bit for the day, then I'll be more than happy with
00:53:25that and I'm sure Gary will appreciate that.
00:53:35Bright and early, the boys are eager to return to the soup kitchen to help Gary.
00:53:40Memphis on the way, dear.
00:53:42Hello.
00:53:43Morning.
00:53:44But in the kitchen, there's no Gary.
00:53:47I'm Gary's wife.
00:53:49Today Gary's been rushed into hospital.
00:53:53He's been having some chest pains.
00:53:56We had to get the ambulance out to him.
00:53:59Sorry to hear that.
00:54:00Hope you're all good.
00:54:02We've still got lots to prepare, so we're going to need your help to do as good of a standard
00:54:08as Gary would normally do it.
00:54:10All right?
00:54:10Let's get started.
00:54:11Let's do it for Gary, eh?
00:54:12Yes, we'll do it.
00:54:13All right.
00:54:14Amazing.
00:54:15Although Gary's in hospital, the soup kitchen must still open its doors in a few hours.
00:54:21We're just going to try and get on with it.
00:54:23We're going to make an even better meal from today, aren't we, boys?
00:54:26Yes.
00:54:26Yes, we are.
00:54:27They'll be filling carrots soon.
00:54:29Yeah.
00:54:29It means putting all they've learnt in the last week to the test.
00:54:33All right.
00:54:34Let's see what you can do today because we're on a tight time to be able to get things done,
00:54:40okay?
00:54:41Crazy, the fact that we were literally cooking food with him yesterday.
00:54:43Just all of a sudden, he's in hospital.
00:54:45In his normal work life, Luke can be unmotivated, but today he'll need to focus.
00:54:52The boys have got to step up and kind of take charge.
00:54:57I feel a slight bit of pressure.
00:54:58I didn't think I would.
00:54:59We've got to sort of be the men in the kitchen now, innit?
00:55:01We've got back shoes to fill.
00:55:03Whilst Alan and Max get to grips with the vegetables...
00:55:06Ready?
00:55:07Yeah.
00:55:07Luke is on cooking duties with Susan, who's volunteered here for the last ten years.
00:55:13How does that make you feel?
00:55:15It makes me really happy because I'm giving back to people that aren't fortunate enough
00:55:18to be able to get a meal.
00:55:20Hang on, hang on.
00:55:21It's your rubber glove.
00:55:23Oh, my glove's in there, yeah.
00:55:24Yeah.
00:55:25I was a little bit kind of unbothered by a lot of stuff before I come here, but now I
00:55:29feel
00:55:29like I can open up inside and actually have that type of emotion I didn't think I had
00:55:34before, which is amazing.
00:55:36It's not just Luke who is finding the positives of giving back.
00:55:39I think the week as a whole, it makes you think about things.
00:55:46It's maybe taking a step back and realising what I've got in life.
00:55:50Just staying a wee bit more grounded.
00:55:52In less than 30 minutes, the soup kitchen will open its doors to 40 hungry mouths.
00:55:58We'll put the mushrooms in now.
00:56:02As the boys finish off the cooking, Father Liam arrives to check on his charges.
00:56:08Good morning, you.
00:56:09Yes.
00:56:09Who do we know?
00:56:10Good morning.
00:56:11Yes.
00:56:12You okay?
00:56:12Well done.
00:56:13What a lovely surprise, eh?
00:56:14Yes.
00:56:15How did you find the lads coming in to help?
00:56:19They were very helpful.
00:56:21I think it's a good experience for them.
00:56:23It's wonderful that you found them engaging, cooperating.
00:56:27Now it's time to serve up.
00:56:31We've got some carrots and mushrooms specially made by us.
00:56:35We made these mushrooms, this one.
00:56:37This week I didn't think that I'd be giving food out to the homeless and know that they've
00:56:41got their own difficulty going on in life and they are in need.
00:56:44What would you like?
00:56:45Like some of this?
00:56:45Yeah, yeah.
00:56:46This is today's special.
00:56:48Handmade by myself, yeah.
00:56:49Enjoy.
00:56:50I will.
00:56:50Father Liam has noticed a big shift in the boys' behaviour.
00:56:54I think this is a big, beautiful learning from experience, from reality.
00:57:00Yeah, if you want to bet more?
00:57:02When you're hospitable to others, you are hospitable to yourself.
00:57:07Because the goodness comes back to you.
00:57:09You're transformed from within.
00:57:12You want to buy a drink now?
00:57:12And that's what's happening to these men and it's such a joy to watch.
00:57:18Anything else?
00:57:19Yes, please.
00:57:19You got a drink, aye?
00:57:21No, I guess not.
00:57:21In Glasgow there's a lot of soup kitchens and places where people can eat if they're homeless.
00:57:27And people, especially my age, I don't think help as much.
00:57:31Want some carrots?
00:57:32Yeah.
00:57:33It's definitely something that I did say that I would try and take into my life.
00:57:37And would you like a drink?
00:57:39But as the dinner service comes to an end...
00:57:42Mushrooms.
00:57:43...Max is nowhere to be seen.
00:57:45Are you happy for me to sort of freestyle or do you know roughly what you want?
00:57:48Tied it like half an inch off the top, really.
00:57:50Yeah.
00:57:50No worries at all, man.
00:57:51They're blessed.
00:57:53Outside, he's come up with his own kind of hospitality by offering his barbering skills to lunch guest Adam.
00:58:00And how long have you found yourself in this situation for, if you don't mind me asking?
00:58:03Oh my gosh, the past few years has been a bit rocky and a bit on and off and a
00:58:09bit stressful really.
00:58:11Well look, I'm here as well to help today so I think the social side to it is massive so
00:58:15you're not just coming down for food.
00:58:17To stop you making you feel a bit lonely and a bit not sure what to do?
00:58:22100%.
00:58:22Sometimes that's all it takes to alleviate someone's problems, you know, just to have a conversation with someone.
00:58:28For me, the highlight of my day was cutting Adam's hair and it's just a lovely feeling.
00:58:34They feel good and we feel good that we've helped them so it was lovely to be fair.
00:58:39Where do these go?
00:58:40With all three taking something from their experience at the soup kitchen, there's good news from the hospital.
00:58:46Gary's on the mend.
00:58:48Fingers crossed that Gary makes a recovery but hopefully we made him proud in the kitchen today with Yvonne and
00:58:53everything went to plan.
00:58:54Really nice.
00:58:55Happy?
00:58:56Yeah, man.
00:58:57100%.
00:58:58Good. I'm glad.
00:58:59Good to meet you, bro.
00:59:00Respect, man.
00:59:01I'm out.
00:59:02Peace.
00:59:03Guess I'm out at all.
00:59:07I appreciate, like, the work that people do just, like, out of their own pocket and more out of the
00:59:14kindness of their own heart, which is pretty meaningful.
00:59:17From everything I've learnt being in this priory is knowing that giving back to others is something that's so, so
00:59:24important.
00:59:24I've not felt a feeling like that before.
00:59:31Still to come.
00:59:34The lads and friars raise a little hell.
00:59:39And have an unexpected night to remember.
00:59:52It's the end of the lads' stay at the priory, but they're not the only ones looking forward to celebrating.
00:59:57The friars have big plans.
01:00:00An ideal night out for me would be to get a little bit pissed and then we'd go out to
01:00:05the rave, maybe meet a few girls, have some good fun with them.
01:00:09You can have a good night anywhere.
01:00:10Whether you're drunk or sober.
01:00:12Well, I say that most of the time it is drunk.
01:00:15Oi!
01:00:17Look at this!
01:00:19It may be a Friday night out on the town, but this surprise trip is a far cry from the
01:00:24boys' usual nocturnal pursuits.
01:00:26Let the game start.
01:00:28Someone want to pick us a team name?
01:00:29The lads and friars have spent the week growing closer, but tonight the battle lines are redrawn.
01:00:36The Holy Goats.
01:00:37Holy Goats, yeah.
01:00:38Score, let's do that.
01:00:39Greatest of all time, you know?
01:00:44Yeah!
01:00:45And though they might not look like your average bowling team,
01:00:51the friars have a secret weapon, Father Shiju.
01:00:55Wow!
01:00:56Wow!
01:00:59Shiju said he had never played before, but surprisingly he's got a, he's a natural.
01:01:09Ball after ball after ball, strike after strike after strike, he's unbelievable.
01:01:13I did not think he'd be like that.
01:01:18Many who come to our community say they've never experienced a more joyful, happy community,
01:01:24because we're always laughing, we're always cracking each other up.
01:01:28It's a happy community.
01:01:30After six days together, everyone's feeling the brotherly love.
01:01:34The first day going into it, it was a wee bit serious, I think, with all the, the prayers
01:01:39and stuff like that.
01:01:41Again, they're just people like us and they enjoy having fun like us, so it's changed our
01:01:46mind on the friars.
01:01:47What an experience, something that I probably wouldn't have ever thought going into this week,
01:01:51but yeah, it was class man.
01:01:54Who knew that I would be here this week, at a bowling alley with friars, and just having
01:01:59like, the funniest time I've had in the wild.
01:02:03Strike, strike, strike.
01:02:12I've never seen a group of people that are so happy to be together.
01:02:18They have really shared our life, entered our life, and we're delighted to share it with
01:02:24them.
01:02:24And it even looks like the friars temperance has rubbed off on the boys.
01:02:30I've won lager, and I called it a day.
01:02:33So, you know, new me, innit?
01:02:37A few months ago today, I would have probably said to the boys, I think there's a few clubs
01:02:41around here, let's just go out, have a good night, but nah, that's not how I'm feeling
01:02:45tonight.
01:02:51That night was epic.
01:02:56Alan, Luke, and Max, thank you so much for sharing the evening with us.
01:03:01I must say it has been so enjoyable, and for us, we've discovered a champion amongst us.
01:03:10At 9pm, Father Alex calls time, and the friars and lads head back to the priory.
01:03:15But there is one final surprise in store.
01:03:18No, we did it in between us, darling.
01:03:21Yeah, left, right?
01:03:22Middle, left.
01:03:27If you would have told me a week ago I'd be doing the cha-cha slide with nine friars
01:03:30without me, I would have said, you're having me on.
01:03:33Come on!
01:03:35Come on!
01:03:38Come on!
01:03:39Come on!
01:03:39Come on!
01:03:40Come on!
01:03:41Come on!
01:03:41Come on!
01:03:41Come on!
01:03:41Come on!
01:03:42Come on!
01:03:43Come on!
01:03:44Come on!
01:03:50Come on!
01:03:51Come on!
01:03:52Right, well, I guess it's TV get packed.
01:03:56After a week of living the life of a Carmelite friar, it's time for the boys to return to
01:04:01their normal lives.
01:04:02I'm going to try and change quite a few things in my life, I think, when I get back.
01:04:06One, definitely going out.
01:04:08I don't feel like I need to do that as much anymore.
01:04:11This week's made me want to take a more serious approach to life.
01:04:14It's just made me, like, actually want to just focus on stuff.
01:04:17Like, now I've got things on my mind that I want to do when I get back and just fully
01:04:21lock in and do it.
01:04:22It's a neat one.
01:04:26In my life, it's always 100 million miles an hour.
01:04:30Like, I'm always doing something.
01:04:31There's never really a time to switch off.
01:04:33I never sit down and take a minute to appreciate life.
01:04:36To disconnect from social media and the digital world has been so refreshing.
01:04:42After the full week, the distractions have stopped.
01:04:45I'm in a good mindset in terms of that.
01:04:47It's been good, man.
01:04:48I've loved it.
01:04:55I think I've just learned to be more understanding.
01:04:59You know, life's not always about you and there's bigger problems out there.
01:05:03If anything, everything we've done this week has just solidified that
01:05:08selfish is just one of the worst things you can be.
01:05:11And for me, cutting Adam's hair was the biggest and most rewarding moment for me,
01:05:16which made me think, you know, doing something like that makes you feel so good.
01:05:19Why would you not do it every day?
01:05:24We've had an open-hearted week and I pray that the blessing and the germinating hope in us is passed
01:05:33on to them.
01:05:35After six days of abstinence, the lads finally get their phones back.
01:05:39It's been a long week.
01:05:41Yes.
01:05:42Thank you very much.
01:05:43It's been amazing.
01:05:45It's been the most educational, funniest, strangest, abnormal week of my life.
01:05:51Yeah, I wouldn't change any of it, I don't think.
01:05:54Anyway, guys.
01:05:55All right.
01:05:55We'll see you is all right.
01:05:56I will definitely take a lot of things out of this.
01:05:58It's been an amazing life experience.
01:06:00Thank you all for having us.
01:06:02It's been amazing.
01:06:05I believe they are leaving us with quite a number of treasures in the sense that they
01:06:10have explored another way of life.
01:06:13I would think they are taking their way being more intentional and focused.
01:06:19As the young men left this afternoon, there was a certain sadness.
01:06:23The sadness of a family without child.
01:06:32Next time.
01:06:33Which one's the best for you?
01:06:34Three pampered young Brits who try not to lift a finger.
01:06:37The only manual labor I'm doing is holding up a thought.
01:06:40Bunk down at a Wild West cowboy ranch.
01:06:43As long as you can stay on the horse, you're probably going to survive.
01:06:48Catch all that brand new next Sunday at 10.
01:06:51And for more gobsmacking swaps, stream the full series of Trading Places now on 5.
01:06:57Next tonight, set three months after the disappearance of her daughter Madeline.
01:07:02Stay there for drama.
01:07:03Under suspicion, Kate McCann.
