Short filmTranscript
00:04on sale this week 726 1986 toyota celica supra i haven't seen one actually for years i didn't
00:14actually know what we're coming from here oh celica toyota celica supra long bonnet low roof
00:22flared arches it's the japanese e-type in it 508 is the big mercedes fire engine there you are
00:30i thought it must be worth this sort of money mustn't it i saw some photographs of it legs
00:37were out and that boom thing there was 75 foot in the air or something i don't know it was
00:41right up
00:41there and i thought that's interesting isn't it and all good yeah came arrived started and that's
00:49when it all went wrong really the aston martin the db6 the mark ii the rarest one out the lot
00:55as we
00:55know it's the right color the right spec the right year the right model everything's dead right about
01:00it ready many lads driven a db6 at 17 is there yeah look something else don't they nice car
01:12like that yeah she's all right the matthewsons a dynasty of classic car auctioneers 55 the joys of an
01:24auction most people will go to us out with something in mind but come away with something different
01:28the fun is the chase we'll have a look and we'll advise you from there you just don't know what's
01:33on
01:33the end of the phone what you're gonna find when you open them doors this is a family's love affair
01:38with motors that have lived a life testing testing most people will buy a car because they can relate
01:45to it maybe a car that dad had you're selling dreams right here we go
02:03another week begins with a larger than usual arrival it's red noisy and stands out a mile
02:11oh what's coming in now well i don't know i don't know anything about large delivery i don't know
02:17what's coming you know what's going out does it blow water about everywhere does it all right
02:23i don't know anything about a fire engine oh the firemen coming in
02:35it's cool though isn't it if you wanted i'm like look at that it's mega isn't it but where are
02:39we
02:39gonna put it the engine came here from a private collector in ireland who also needed some space
02:47it's not got any blues and twos or anything you know it's just passing you through i think
02:52you'd think surely that'd still be used to him in some way shape or form wouldn't you like why would
02:57you bring it out of service i know what you mean it's not old enough is it not really pensioned
03:02off
03:03oh funny i'd be uniform oh big cab like in it they are aren't they there's gonna be like five
03:14or six
03:14hundred grand there and you reckon as much as that and then now it's worth 10p in it
03:22oh they're off but they're off oh that was lovely wasn't it
03:29oh here we are look you see um yeah well these do them bits and that and that does that
03:37hose thing
03:40it should be clear by now that paul never made the grade as a fireman
03:45hey hey you like that don't you look at that it's a big leg innit
03:54you don't want to go down she don't want to go in either
03:58do they have to go oh never oh yeah you'll have to go right out with it do you learn
04:03suppose
04:07this is the moment when you realize that doing the okey cokey with a fire engine
04:11is the wrong idea so our current situation is we've got a right leg out unable to retract
04:18basically yeah luckily uh he did it and not me so
04:32like the proverbial well-oiled machine the classic car commandos operate with precision
04:37and the very best intelligence i don't know what i'm going for um don't know who i'm meeting
04:45don't know where i'm going so it's the usual last minute thing oh i love it yeah it makes it
04:51all
04:51all part of the fun doesn't it when you don't know who you're going to meet what you're going to
04:53go for
04:54so um no we'll soon find out all being well charlie's coming down with me and uh yeah so he
04:59can
04:59give me a hand like so no it's good charlie's on board now taking a load of pressure off so
05:03yeah
05:03no i'm done i ain't got a clue what i'm going for i'm just gonna um yeah just arrive really
05:09see what
05:09happens i got a winch got a trailer got charlie what more do you need that's it we'll be all
05:14right
05:24i love driving it and knowing that you wouldn't see another one you might get passed by e-type
05:31drags and aston martins but you weren't going to get passed by a toyota saliga
05:36andrew longmuir has had his for more than 30 years but it's not your common or garden saliga
05:43it's the toyota saliga supra it's got a 2.8 twin cam electronic ignition in it nice cruising car
05:51for someone my age it's quite a firm ride so time to let it go
06:00the reason i partly that i kept it for so many years was that i was going to give it
06:06to my son but
06:09he got married and had a child and uh sort of the thought of being responsible for the car
06:18putting it back on the road has waned a bit
06:21it was one of the delights of owning it was driving it round and people not realizing what
06:27it is because i don't think many people will see them
06:35toyota's answer to datsun's all-conquering 280z was a stretched out version of the saliga
06:41powered by a straight six-cylinder engine they gave it a new badge and the saliga supra was born
06:48the first gen looked the part even if the performance lacked a bit of punch
06:52still rear-wheel drive and fuel injection made it a fun if not exactly earth-shattering ride
06:591982 saw the arrival of a totally remodeled 2.8 litre version complete with an eight-band
07:05graphic equalizer that made your spandau body tapes sound like tony hadley was in the passenger seat
07:12the new supers first arrived in strictly limited numbers and like big hair and shoulder pads not
07:18many survived the 80s it's reckoned there are fewer than 10 left in the country today
07:31right inside it's a bit dusty it's got air conditioning cruise control it's a five-speed manual box
07:42which is a bit unusual as well most of them are automatics it's obviously got a limited slip diff
07:48the handling of it is enjoyable there's never been any question about my love for the car but now
07:58to see it ending up like this i need to get something done about it it would be nice if
08:05it went for
08:08well anything more than three and a half thousand
08:22it's classic car wash day and proving he's as much a dab hand with a chamois leather as a gavel
08:29is the washer upper in chief what a lovely car lovely car lovely color absolutely bangle
08:40how many cars i've washed and cleaned if i've washed 10 000 must be must have washed 10 000 or
08:47something
08:47or more and probably cleaned half of that and more i don't know really
08:54wouldn't really bother me if i didn't wash any more you know really
09:01i suppose basically i'll wash and clean probably 20 25 a week for
09:0950 years or something how many is that it's quite a lot isn't it
09:35it is simply one of the most beautiful shapes ever crafted i mean it's kind of mozart in 3d isn't
09:43it
09:43really waxing lyrical about this aston martin db6 his owner and full-on aston enthusiast aiden murkert
09:53this particular example is a db6 mark ii only 170 something like that mark twos were made for the uk
10:03market
10:05this car is an extraordinary example because it is an unrestored example but when you look at it you
10:12would never know it is absolutely beautiful if you come and take a peek inside
10:18the interior well i just think is magical i truly do right there we go i mean driving down the
10:28road
10:28a beautiful sound isn't it oh absolutely you can't beat it absolutely and the extraordinary thing is
10:33because this is an unrestored example i'm actually not scared to use it i prefer not to be out in
10:40the
10:40rain but if it rains it rains but here we go look at that one fat lump this is unrestored
10:48yes people i
10:50suppose care enough for these things to make sure that they will survive in fabulous condition and you've
10:57been very very proud to own it yeah absolutely it would be a lie to say i don't feel good
11:03driving up the
11:03road in it because i do feel good every time i go out i'm driving a victory lap
11:13and the sound have you listened to a car going past
11:22the db6 is the jewel in aiden's collection but he's also partial to the odd ng
11:31they're pretty they really are they are so so lovely and they're very affordable very manageable
11:36if you're looking for cheap uh classic car this is the one to buy this is not like a modern
11:43car it's
11:43not an ipad with a wheel at each corner you know this is what i like to call an analog
11:48car
11:50whenever i go out in this one and we do go out in them whenever i go out on this
11:54i feel i'm in a miss
11:56marple film this is a sleek neat car there's no door handles on the mga do you athletically get in
12:06by no you've got a string that you have to pull on the inside although the problem with that is
12:12if
12:13it's raining and the windows up and the roof is on it's a bit of a challenge to actually open
12:18the doors
12:22aiden's already got plans for the cash from the sale he's giving it all to the charitable causes
12:27he supports we can invest heavily in educational projects we run a school in india which is a
12:34charitable school we also have a big interest in a new school in birmingham and as i was looking at
12:40this i thought it's a beautiful car but it's a thing and i'm turning this thing and indeed some
12:45of the other things here we are going to be turning that into people change lives i don't just want
12:53somebody to stick it in a museum how much better is it to actually experience the past by driving it
13:00yeah you could stick it in a garage disconnect the battery and say i'll come back in 15 years
13:06but where's the fun in there now this is a car i'm hoping somebody will
13:10love it for what it is and use it because of what it is
13:20few british marks inspire such affection as a vintage sunbeam well built reliable and fun to drive
13:28the roots manufactured talbots rapiers and alpines have always done well at the pickering auctions
13:35lot number 482 sunbeam talbot 90 100 genuine car third and last time provisionally
13:43lot number 32 is the sunbeam rapier hammer coming down at 67
13:49sunbeam alpine very very solid looking car third and last time 5100 there you go well done 5-1
13:59there are a couple of alpines coming up in the next auction one a full-on restoration job the other
14:06finished to perfection do you know what every now and then an item turns up doesn't it and you think
14:14oh i like that i like that that's that item for me in this auction that's my car
14:23i've got a thing about wheels see i like nice wheels and it sits up nice very often they're a
14:28bit tired a bit saggy you know you open the door they drop a bit this one doesn't it just
14:33opens closes
14:34nice all right gap's not perfect it's not perfect on the body but it just i don't know it just
14:40draws
14:40me in for some reason and i could quite happily run about next summer in that car brilliant absolutely
14:46great yeah yeah so i like that car the pros of buying one that somebody else has restored you're
14:52not too sure what's under that glossy green are we but you can drive it if you want one your
14:58spec if
14:59you want to know what's underneath it everything else then you restore one don't you and how much
15:04would you be looking for this one i haven't seen any figures to be fair but i would have thought
15:08that's going to be like seven or eight grand i would have thought as opposed to probably two or
15:12three grand over there here we go look wanting a bit of love but look further than first impressions
15:26it's not as bad as it may seem not for a sunbeam it's not rotten like a sunbeam very often
15:33it is
15:34all right free there you go engine's free so that's a bonus in it and the actual car itself back
15:41arches
15:41are rotten couple of bits down here bits and pieces but a lot of it it's not bad not bad
15:48once
15:49the door bottom looks splicing in once a wheel arch rear quarter bottom look boot lid looks good
15:56got a boot floor look i mean when you see the car from over the other end of the shed
16:01to then come
16:02over and see a boot floor in it that's good so anyway you've got choice haven't you if your budget
16:08stretches to restore one and make it beautiful crack on if it doesn't buy one like that that's
16:15nice and user-friendly and off you go 648 64 sunbeam alpine there she is been parked up for a
16:23little
16:23while as you can well see but what potential that's got can't go wrong with it 2 000 pound 2
16:29000 pound
16:30north yorkshire 2 000 pound 2 000 pound absolutely for nothing maiden bid never heard anything like
16:36it before 2 000 pound gonna go 2 000 pound for the first second third last time 2 000 pound
16:47more than a few weekends work there but the new owner has got the restoration well underway
16:56228 is the 66 sunbeam alpine here we go we're away 6 000 6 2 6 4 6 6 6
17:058 7 7 000 i've got good value
17:097 000 pounds it is very good value of seven charlie's phone gonna be sold cheap sports car these 7
17:16000 for
17:17first second third and last time charlie's bid 7 000 down to you at seven well done
17:24they make a nice change from mgb they're everywhere aren't they they're great aren't they brilliant
17:28we all love mgbs you go in the show field and there's 20 mgbs and there's three of them
17:34yeah for me they're just they just just look a bit fancier really just look a bit fancier
17:49jack and charlie have traveled almost the full length of the m62 to chester maria maria all right
17:56then and they still don't know what for i didn't actually know what we're coming for but here are
18:02celica yeah you didn't tell me that bit jake did you oh wow toyota celica supra
18:15blimey how long has it been in here about five years in this particular garage
18:19don't see many celica supras about though do you i think there was only six left in the country that's
18:25probably why then yeah i bet it was a fair car back in its day see off most bmws i
18:32bet it would
18:33yeah i think it's quite futuristic for its time don't you i think with it being 2.8 manual i
18:41think
18:41it would have been a bit like a spaceship won't it really yeah i mean good fun still will be
18:45today
18:46when have you last had it running it's about six years i think so it shouldn't take many minutes then
18:51i'd like to think to to get it going and i'll tell you what just with a wash off and
18:54a massive
18:55coat of polish it would change it all all together wouldn't it arches and things are all very solid
19:00they're very good feels good lovely other two well that's handy at least they're all holding
19:07there so far one more to go i didn't know whether to expect a uh uh supra i.e you
19:15know that the
19:16supra the the proper one or uh or like a 2002 slica i didn't know what to expect and then
19:22you open
19:22the door to that and think oh that's lovely isn't it getting out the way handles at this end lad
19:37all right that side andrew yeah oh there you go mr muscles over here keep it going well she's got
19:45a stiff spot that's why that's heavy there we go get truck moved up
19:57that's not easy enough didn't it
20:09precision that
20:14straight
20:17that'll do yeah my aim was originally to get it
20:21up to the isle of aaron and drive it on the isle of aaron but someone else can do that
20:35what did you buy it for back in the day i paid the guy two thousand pounds well i think
20:41we'll be
20:42in profit good good good well we'll see what it makes we'll be on our way then all right thank
20:46you
20:46very much
21:02well do you want this big don't you
21:13let's do this
21:16it's easier to do it this way
21:19Make more noise.
21:35Micked it from Pickering High Street.
21:4780 pounds for the third and last five.
21:51The artists of the Pickering memorabilia team have worked their magic once again and demand
21:56for the signs and symbols is brisk.
21:59Block number 603 is the Alfa dealer sign here with the Alfa dealer sign we've got at £520
22:05be warned.
22:08495 is the Honda.
22:11The big Honda sign there you are, look at that.
22:14We've all done and dusted at £120.
22:17Sold.
22:19643.
22:19Porsche Martini racing sign.
22:21£25 and are we there at £225.
22:24At £225 then hammer's coming down and are we all done and dusted at £225.
22:29Bought to keep Michael happy because he wants it in his shed.
22:38Do you know when something appears to be a good idea on paper and then reality kicks in?
22:45When Dave agreed to sell it, he hadn't reckoned on reality kicking in quite so hard.
22:51I saw some photographs of it.
22:53Legs were out and that boom thing there was 75 foot in the air or something.
22:57I don't know, it was right up there and I thought, that's interesting isn't it?
23:02Surely there must be somebody who wants to give £20,000 for a machine that probably costs
23:07£300,000 and all good, yeah, came, arrived, started and that's when it all went wrong really.
23:16We can't get that leg out or back in or anything, that just seems to want to stay there.
23:22But yeah, we've been in here and we've had all this apart and we've checked things and we've swapped things
23:28and we've pulled things and we've poked things and most things work.
23:34It's just the bits that we want to work don't.
23:37There you are, see if he wants one.
23:40There you go.
23:43He might be rushing to go and buy one.
23:47But yeah, what else can you do with it?
23:49It is just very specialist, that's the trouble.
23:51It's not the sort of fire engine you can park outside the house, is it, at home?
23:55Not really, is it?
23:57You know, and thinking, oh no one will notice.
24:00Mm-hmm, they will.
24:02Yeah, this time I might have bitten off more than I can chew maybe.
24:10508 is the big Mercedes fire engine.
24:13There you are.
24:14Again, my fault, it's here.
24:15I just thought for the money, when you compare them to the fact they're about £500,000 new,
24:20and I thought it must be worth this sort of money, mustn't it?
24:24There you go.
24:24Anyone want to jump in at £15,000?
24:26I'll bring it down to £15,000.
24:27If you need one, and you've got to have one to meet some regs, there you go.
24:31£15,000 if not, we'll have to move on.
24:34I just thought it looked absolutely for nothing.
24:42No bids, no budding fireman Sam's,
24:45and unless Paul can get the leg in, no going back to the vendor either.
24:50Yeah, go on.
24:52That computer system there is registering a fault somewhere.
24:56We can't move anything.
24:57So the only way we can get it in, is to take the pipes off from the ram,
25:04and override it and push it back in.
25:07Yeah, go on, keep going.
25:10A little bit.
25:10Whoop.
25:22All I know, it looks better on there than it ever did part there.
25:24I just said it.
25:25Oh, it looks much nicer on there.
25:37Derek's been grinding out the motorway miles for hours.
25:41Destination?
25:43Bromsgrove.
25:44Sorry it's been late.
25:45Oh, mate.
25:46Traffic's a red.
25:47Where Aidan Merkin's DB6 is waiting to take its place on the trailer.
25:54Nice, isn't it?
25:54It is, isn't it?
25:56Mmm.
25:57Yeah, nice car.
25:58Lovely colour.
25:59It's beautiful, isn't it?
26:01Was it originally that colour?
26:02Yes.
26:03Yes, it was.
26:04I actually had the bloke come and look at this.
26:06He said I'd strip this back and repaint it.
26:08Oh, you're idiots, aren't you?
26:09I thought you were an idiot.
26:10You're idiots, yeah.
26:11Totally idiots, yeah.
26:12Totally idiots.
26:13It's better than mine, cosmetically better than mine.
26:16Has it been abroad?
26:17It has.
26:18You've got it in one.
26:19I think it's Italy that wants those things, isn't it?
26:22The indicator on the side.
26:24And I think Italy's the only country that require it.
26:28So that's a slight adaption.
26:31Hang on.
26:31Sorry, Derek.
26:32You've turned up.
26:33You've drunk the tea.
26:34You've eaten the biscuits.
26:35You're having a doughnut.
26:36What about the car?
26:37What about the car?
26:39Right, OK.
26:48Come up.
26:52Yeah, steady away.
26:53That'll do you.
26:55There.
26:56Perfect.
26:57Safest place for it up here.
27:02Righto, mate.
27:03You're safe there now.
27:04We'll not go anywhere.
27:06Righto, I'll pop these away, put my ramps away, and we're nearly there then.
27:10Are you having DB6 envy?
27:13Oh, yeah.
27:14Have you?
27:15Yeah.
27:15Envy.
27:16Yeah, we always do, don't we, really?
27:18I mean, always envy anyone, A, that's got a DB6, and B, someone's just driving it.
27:22I never get time to drive mine, do I?
27:23It sits there all the bloody time.
27:25Yeah.
27:34Yeah.
27:35Auction week always brings the browsers out, and with it, the memories.
27:39I took Jane out for our first date in this triatholamite 1850 HL. It was a trouble mite.
27:45It looked all over my leather boots.
27:49Well, you're still talking.
27:51Yeah, it's 42 years later.
27:58The BMW 318, that was my first car, I bought £4,000 in 1989.
28:04I was nursing at the time, going to work in it, and we used to go out.
28:09Oh, you must have been a flash nurse driving around it.
28:12£4,000 was a lot of money then.
28:16My old one, I used to not drive it for weeks, and I'd go in the garage and get in
28:20and turn the ignition on,
28:21see the digital dash lights up and turn the key, and it just boom, into life.
28:25That dull hum of a straight six, it was beautiful.
28:28Gives you goosebumps, honestly, really good.
28:31When I got rid of mine, I kind of missed it.
28:34When this popped up for sale, I thought, oh, I couldn't have a look.
28:37Might have a little bed, we'll see, see what happens on the day.
28:41Celica Supras, in any condition, turn up once in a blue moon,
28:45so when they do, everybody wants a look.
28:50Although this one wants a little bit of love,
28:55it's actually kept really well.
28:57A, you've got every increase in value,
29:00and B, you've got a really, really practical and usable car, haven't you?
29:06Everything's moving on a generation or two, isn't it?
29:09The 30s have had it, finished.
29:12The 50s, even they're dwindling a little bit now, aren't they?
29:1650s, and now we're moving into 60s, still okay.
29:2070s, 80s.
29:22Here he is.
29:2580s, hot hatch.
29:27Good fun, aren't they?
29:29They're still good fun.
29:30They still drive like a relatively modern car, don't they?
29:33Let's be honest.
29:34So, yeah, Japanese, six-cylinder, on top of the job.
29:38Maybe the only thing they should have done was a little bit more anti-corrosion, shall we say.
29:44Yeah, that's maybe their downfall, maybe their downfall.
29:48But that aside, fabulous engine, fabulous over-engineered.
29:52You can hardly wear them out, can you?
29:54Absolutely great.
29:57It's still a good-looking car, even now, you know.
30:01It's old, but it's still a good-looking, trendy car, isn't it, you know?
30:06It's E-Type, isn't it?
30:08You know, E-Type's iconic.
30:10Fabulous, I love a V12 E-Type.
30:15Long bonnet, low roof, flared arches.
30:20It's the Japanese E-Type, isn't it?
30:28726, 1986, Toyota Celica Supra.
30:31Now, someone picked this up, didn't they?
30:33Did you pick it up?
30:34Yeah, Charlie, yeah.
30:35It should run, it had an engine rebuild not many thousand miles ago.
30:39But, yeah, it'll make a car.
30:40Where we are, then? Where are we?
30:41On sale and going, then?
30:426,500.
30:436,500.
30:446,600.
30:466,800.
30:476,800.
30:476,900.
30:47You want seven, Dave?
30:487,000.
30:497,000.
30:511, 7,1.
30:52Telephone, in the end.
30:537,1.
30:547,3.
30:554.
30:567,4.
30:575.
30:586.
30:587,6.
30:597,9.
31:008.
31:018,1.
31:02Count it, Tyrone.
31:038,1.
31:048,300.
31:068,4.
31:078,5.
31:078,005.
31:098,6.
31:108,7.
31:118,7.
31:128,8.
31:128,800.
31:14On its way, 9,000.
31:169,000 pounds.
31:189,002.
31:193.
31:209,3.
31:21Rare car, like you're saying it.
31:229,5.
31:239,005.
31:24I haven't seen one actually for years.
31:269,700.
31:279,8.
31:289,9.
31:29Come on, might as well fill it up while you're here.
31:319,9.
31:329,9.
31:32Who's got 10?
31:3310,000.
31:34I've got 10.
31:3410,000 pound away.
31:3610.
31:36Gonna be sold.
31:3710,000 for the first.
31:3910,000 for the second.
31:41Third and last time.
31:4210,000.
31:44Rare warning.
31:44Gonna be sold.
31:46There you go.
31:47Thank you, gentlemen.
31:50I think Andrew would have been happy with like three and a half
31:53far grand somewhere there.
31:54So he's gonna be over the moon with 10.
31:5610,000.
31:58100,000.
31:5911,000 people have days for the sake of the staff and her little shit.
32:24I had quite a few.
32:25I've got no idea.
32:25Don't make a lot of utherops to whatever he has.
32:27Yeah, she's all right.
32:34Ready?
32:38It's all right then, won't you?
32:40Yeah, you're all right.
32:50Ain't many lads driven a DB6 at 17, is there?
32:57Yeah, they look somewhere else, don't they?
33:01Gearbox is a bit stiff, a bit notchy.
33:04It's not bad, it's okay, it's all right.
33:07Yeah, I see why there's such a following following.
33:13Before everyone shouts James Bond's car, Paul's got a message.
33:18It was actually a DB5 in the film, but everyone thinks it's a 6.
33:23I like to see a bit of wear on a seat and things.
33:26Why is that?
33:26Well, because if you haven't got a bit of wear on a seat,
33:28you've got a new seat, haven't you?
33:29And then you haven't got an old Aston, have you?
33:31You've got a new Aston.
33:32Yeah, various bills and invoices here.
33:34Look, I'm going to take them all upstairs in a minute.
33:36Loads and loads of old MOTs, look.
33:39Coachwork's lovely, wheels are lovely.
33:43There we go, look.
33:44Great, isn't she?
33:45Not overdone, just nice.
33:48Four litre, inline straight six.
33:50Lovely.
33:51Look at the steering wheel, look.
33:53It just says, hold me, doesn't it?
33:56Are we talking real craftsmanship or what?
33:59Not really.
34:00We're talking thrown together, if you think about it,
34:02because they're built out of bits, weren't they?
34:04Generally speaking, I'm going to get well shot for that, aren't I?
34:07Look at the switch for the interior light.
34:11It's a switch off of something, completely random,
34:14and it doesn't fit, so they put a bolt in
34:17to get your pin to come out and press your switch.
34:20It is very agricultural, very primitive,
34:23but they work, don't they?
34:25Let's be fair, most people who own them
34:27are going to be jumping up and down, aren't they?
34:28And I'm really sorry for you guys for that,
34:30but it is a fact of life.
34:32They are largely made up of bits and pieces,
34:34and they are one-offs, aren't they?
34:37Let's talk money.
34:39Ooh, vulgar, vulgar.
34:41I suspect it's going to do somewhere.
34:45My gut, 165, 175.
34:48So let's hope it goes off to pastures new,
34:51kept like that, and used also.
35:00The Aston Martin, the DB6, the Mark II,
35:03the rarest one out of the lot, as we know.
35:05It's the right colour, the right spec,
35:07the right year, the right model,
35:08everything's dead right about it.
35:09The proceeds are going to be used to support a charity.
35:13So let's make a start.
35:15150, I've got 150 and 160.
35:17160, 170.
35:18170.
35:20170,000.
35:215, he said.
35:22175.
35:23180.
35:24180.
35:24Back with me.
35:25180.
35:26Going then, £180,000 is the 5.
35:29185.
35:29185, 190.
35:31190.
35:32Jill's bid, 190.
35:33Right, we're at 190.
35:345, 195.
35:35Bid, 195.
35:36Do you want to do 200?
35:37200.
35:38Do you want 200?
35:39Do you want 200?
35:40195 we got.
35:41200.
35:41200.
35:42He's a very wise buyer, 200.
35:44So it's our bid at 200,000.
35:45200,000.
35:46All done then, £200,000.
35:48For that money, 200,000.
35:50Don't come up like this every day.
35:52Jill's phone.
35:53Going to submit it then, 200,000.
35:55200,000.
35:56Get your hammer down, Derek.
35:57Stop messing about.
35:58200,000 for the first.
36:00200,000 for the second.
36:01Third and last time on Jill's telephone.
36:04200,000.
36:06Sold.
36:07Sold.
36:08Well done, Greg.
36:09Congratulations.
36:10You've got yourself an Aston.
36:14He's happy.
36:15He's very happy.
36:19It's just the quintessential British Aston Martin sports car.
36:23Particularly the Mark II, the shape of it, has always been something that's stood out
36:30for me as one of the most beautiful cars.
36:33New owner Greg Michael was so happy, he turned up the day after to collect.
36:40Sit in your car.
36:43How about that?
36:44That's amazing.
36:45Yes, she has a beauty.
36:46Lovely, isn't it?
36:47It's fantastic.
36:49It's the appearance and the design and the look of them.
36:51There's just nothing like them, is there?
36:53It's been a childhood dream.
36:55It's been 45 years waiting since I've been here.
36:58Good luck to you.
36:58Good luck to you.
36:59Greg's got a long drive back home.
37:01But what's the betting?
37:03He enjoys every single mile.
37:11North of the border, in the fine city of Glasgow, it's not just the architecture that's
37:16a feast for the eyes.
37:18We have 305 GT Turbo.
37:21There's only about three or four left in the UK and I've got one of them.
37:25Neil Clark's been building up a collection of cars that tell a story of hot hatch speed.
37:31The Toyota GT4, it's a great car to drive, it's phenomenal, it really is.
37:35And it does turn heads, but there's two of them together.
37:38Is there two GT4s?
37:39Two of them?
37:40Yeah.
37:41Why not?
37:42Have four if they're good.
37:44All of which brings us nicely to Neil's latest acquisition, the 1986 Celica Supra.
37:51They came in to the country, you only could get ten at a time.
37:56They wouldn't allow any more in, which was surprising.
38:00And obviously they were expensive.
38:01Back then, to have a car which was, you know, 145 brake horsepower was just unbelievable.
38:06That was like, you know, it was a rocket.
38:07We were running about in cars at 70, 80 horsepower.
38:10The design features on those cars, I mean, they went a lot of bother to get this car to look
38:15the way it is.
38:16It cried out for me to buy it.
38:18But a car that hadn't moved in a while, had some issues that needed a bit of left field thinking
38:24to fix.
38:26We got the tank out, we looked inside and went, oh, oh dear.
38:29The fuel goes off, it looks like varnish inside, it smells terrible.
38:33And the tank looks like it's got a lot of corrosion in it.
38:36We used to put litres and litres of vinegar, gallons of the stuff inside it.
38:40So you could put every material you can, nuts and bolts, screws, bit of chain, whatever you might be.
38:46And you just put it inside it and you slush it about, just till your arms are aching.
38:50You do it the next day and then you leave it a couple of days.
38:52And you look inside it and it starts to look a lot better, a lot cleaner.
38:55And you just do it again and then eventually you treat it with bicarbonate soda to neutralise the situation with
39:00the vinegar.
39:01So the Supra has been keeping the mechanics busy.
39:04And Malcolm Campbell has enjoyed the chance to work on the old stuff.
39:09You have to use your own brain, you have to use your experience.
39:13You look at the car, you then make a decision on how you're going to fix that car.
39:18And that's where the enjoyment comes.
39:20It's not just someone, a computer telling you how to repair it.
39:24You're welcome.
39:27Thank you Malcolm.
39:29Job done.
39:30Brilliant.
39:31Bench done.
39:33Sounds fantastic.
39:36You don't see it that much now.
39:38The inspection lamp of the cars.
39:42Double overhead cam.
39:44Slight tick off the engine.
39:46That hopefully will go away when we do an engine flush and we'll take it a run.
39:50And there you go.
39:52You have one lovely car.
40:10Nice exhaust nut.
40:15Sounds very healthy.
40:18Taking the Sunbeam Alpine for a spin through the glorious county Durham countryside.
40:23His new owner, David Dye.
40:26I was actually looking for an Alpine if I could find one.
40:29One day I looked and I saw this one.
40:31I put a bid in absolute rock bottom of the estimate and nobody else bid for it.
40:38It's a lovely car.
40:40Really comfortable to drive.
40:45The interior is lovely magnolia leather.
40:49The dashboard clocks have all been done in the magnolia faces.
40:52A nice wall on the dashboard and so on.
40:55It's really a nice car.
40:57It's quite easy to get in and out which was one of the reasons I looked at it in the
41:02first place.
41:02I thought it would be easier than the MG.
41:05On the MG I would have to put one leg in and I'd get hold of my foot and lift
41:09it in by hand with this one.
41:14I can actually get in it and shut the door.
41:19I'll lift the bonnet and see what's going on.
41:23I put a new fuel pump on which is down here.
41:27It's a bit awkward to get at but once you've done it a few times you can do it quite
41:32easily.
41:32You get the wheel off and you can do it from underneath much easier than from the top.
41:35But that's old cars.
41:36You learn how to do it by doing it basically.
41:39You can read the book all day but it doesn't help you to get the bolts undone sometimes.
41:45You're very much a...
41:48Tight.
41:51Fix it, don't buy it.
41:54It's got all my total costs of everything on.
41:57I can't tell you exactly how much I've spent on it.
41:59Can I guess later on?
42:01Sorry?
42:01Can I guess?
42:02Yep.
42:03I'll live in there for now.
42:10Good test of its pulling power up the hill here.
42:14This is where it scores well over the MG.
42:19It goes over rough roads very smoothly.
42:23It goes in and out the gears really easily.
42:26It doesn't clunk.
42:31This is where it's fairly hard work.
42:33Very tight bends.
42:41It's very heavy steering with not having power steering on it.
42:46It's all part of the character of the old cars.
42:51Total cost of parts.
42:53Not counting the hours and hours and hours of labour.
42:57508 pounds and 68 pence.
43:03I can't see it being a problem for a lot of years to come.
43:06So it'll probably see me out as a classic car.
43:10It's going to be a good all-round car.
43:12I'm really pleased with the buy.
43:14T noi!
43:16.
