00:00We are massively ramping up our testing programmes, buying in huge numbers of tests to see whether
00:09you've had it already, but also pushing forward very fast on testing people to see whether
00:15they currently have it, the anti-jet or the anti-body tests that have been described.
00:21As I said right at the beginning, and indeed right at the beginning of this crisis, we
00:26were going to do the right measures at the right time, not according to a political diktat,
00:33but according to the best scientific and medical advice in the world.
00:37And there are good reasons for wanting to tackle an epidemic strictly in accordance with the
00:44scientific advice.
00:44That is what we have done, and I continue to believe that that is the right approach for
00:49this country.
00:50When we launched the appeal last night, we hoped to get 250,000 volunteers over a few
00:57days.
00:57But I can tell you that in just 24 hours, 405,000 people have responded to the call.
01:07They will be driving medicines from pharmacies to patients.
01:10They'll be bringing patients home from hospital.
01:12Very importantly, they'll be making regular phone calls to check on and support people who
01:19are staying on their own at home.
01:22And they will be absolutely crucial in the fight against this virus.
