00:00Nearly a third of American men have left the American workforce.
00:03That means they're unemployed and apparently aren't looking for work at all.
00:08New data from the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics show that just 66% of working-age men
00:13had or were seeking jobs as of April. Back at the end of the 2008 recession,
00:18the number was almost exactly the same. But, you know, we had just been through the biggest
00:22job gutting since the Great Depression, so this hits kind of different.
00:27The male workforce ticked up until the pandemic, when only 59% of dudes were in the workforce.
00:33After the world reopened in 2001, the numbers went up again for a few years,
00:37but have been on the decline ever since. Job cuts in traditionally male-heavy industries
00:42like transportation, manufacturing, and other labor-intensive fields are part of the slide,
00:47as men are leaving for sickness and disability. Increasing numbers of retirees
00:51and men who are in school are also narrowing the working population.
