00:00Expo Dubai
00:00will be one of the first major global events
00:04following the pandemic
00:05and so it's very important to see how
00:08as architects, designers, planners, engineers
00:10we can help kind of design for the new normal
00:13for instance just one example
00:15our pavilion in Dubai
00:16the national Italian pavilion
00:18is not close to the environment
00:20is not sealed
00:22it's actually open to air and spores
00:24and that's very good for two reasons
00:26first of all it means we need to use much less energy
00:29we don't need to air-condition it for instance
00:31but the other thing is going to be much healthier
00:34in terms of protection from the virus
00:36and avoiding transmission
00:38as air constantly changes
00:39and goes from outside to the inside
00:42again another way of how we can help
00:45design together the new normal in Dubai
00:48the Expo 2020 will hopefully represent
00:52the new normality
00:54architecture and urban space
00:56is the living space of people
00:59we can and must design it so
01:02that it is healthy, safe
01:04and made for the benefit of humans
01:07but also livable
01:09beautiful and inspiring
01:13visitors to the Swiss pavilion
01:16will be able to experience
01:18a unique typical Swiss experience
01:21a hike through real fog
01:23natural fog
01:24up to the mountain top
01:27with a view
01:28or the fog
01:30architecture and engineering
01:31can be used to
01:34so to say save the world
01:38in this sense
01:39I think the pavilions are a bit like messengers
01:42they are telling stories
01:45and it's not just the architecture
01:48but it's also the content
01:51so it is about the people
01:54and the exhibitions
01:54which are inside the pavilion
01:56so all of this is telling the story
01:59of for instance
02:01how and why Finland has been recently
02:05the happiest country in the world
02:07also the the heart of the pavilion
02:09is a very spacious and high space
02:12so that in that sense
02:15hopefully it will become a place in Dubai
02:18where it is very natural
02:20and nice to meet people face to face
02:24public space is very important
02:26I think it's particularly important today
02:28when we are spending more and more time
02:30in virtual space
02:31but public space is a space of serendipity
02:34and that's why public space is at the core
02:37of the Italian pavilion in Dubai
02:39outside the pavilion
02:40as you're moving through the pavilion
02:41in some of the main squares inside the pavilion
02:44is really something that we hope
02:45can help be an antidote
02:47to actually this life
02:49that we've experienced
02:50since the beginning of the pandemic
02:52with too much digital
02:54public and private spaces
02:56are the places where real life takes place
02:59we can design these architectures
03:02in such a way that they are CO2 neutral
03:05in construction and operation
03:08climate adaptive
03:10and culturally impacting
03:12we call this clever architecture at OS
03:16innovations
03:18Finland pavilion is a good example
03:20that it's a very simple building
03:23I think Finnish people like to think that
03:25innovations are the best when they are
03:28simple but yet intelligent
03:31inside Finland pavilion is that
03:33we try to show a holistic view
03:35to sustainability
03:37that it ranges from lifestyle issues
03:40to city planning
03:41to technology
03:42to culture
03:44and well-being
03:45and one practical example of this is that
03:49the Finland pavilion is white on the surface
03:52so that will help to keep the building cool
03:56in the hot sun in Dubai
03:58I believe the circularity should be the core of every project we do today
04:02circularity is what nature does
04:04and what we should also include
04:06in all the designs we do
04:08and well
04:10the Italian pavilion at Expo Dubai is no exception
04:12so all the materials are materials that are being recycled
04:16can be recyclable
04:17can be composted
04:19so anyway all of this has been studied
04:21from a circular approach
04:23the original design of the Swiss pavilion
04:25envisaged a lightweight tent-like structure
04:29made of wood and textiles
04:31unfortunately building regulations did not allow this
04:35as architects we absolutely must also work towards ensuring
04:41that circular construction methods are also possible under building laws
04:47nevertheless
04:47the material used in the Swiss pavilion will be recycled
04:52where possible materials from an upcycling process were used
04:57and the weight of the building was reduced to an absolute minimum
05:01this too is in the spirit of the creator clever architecture
05:06Finland was the first country in the world to create a national roadmap
05:12or circular economy in 2016 in the Finland pavilion
05:17and they will be recycled and returned to use after the expo
05:23only stone was brought from Finland but that is a natural material so it can be returned to
05:30Dubai nature as well
05:33one of the key messages of Finland pavilion is to build light
05:38so that is why the structure of the pavilion is as light as possible and it is a steel structure
