00:22cheating on her with a good friend, who was also married with kids at the time.
00:26And now, in the wake of the bombshell interview, he's owning up to his past mistakes.
00:31The CBS Mornings anchor and BFF to Oprah Winfrey was married to William Bumpus from 1982 to 1993,
00:38until it all came crashing down.
00:40She told the wild story to host Alex Cooper about how she had gone to the airport with their two
00:45young children,
00:46but then her flight was canceled, and when she returned home, she caught him in the act. Take a look.
00:51The alarm was set, which I thought, that's strange, because you're in here by yourself.
00:57You're a big-ass, grown-ass man. He never sets the alarm.
01:01And next thing I know, he comes flying out of the room, and he's got a towel on.

01:09To make matters worse, the home security system called the cops,
01:13who arrived at the scene and, get this, asked for Gayle King's autograph.

01:23At that moment, she also said she called out her friend, who remained unnamed, and told her,
01:28I can't believe you are here and you are doing this, adding, I thought we were friends.
01:33King admitted she was so oblivious to their affair.
01:36Now, the father of her children, William Bumpus,
01:38is breaking his silence in a lengthy statement he shared with Page Six.
01:42My deepest apologies to Gayle, to our daughter Kirby and her husband Virgil,
01:46to our son William and his wife Elise, and to our three grandchildren,
01:50for the pain I caused decades ago. Those actions were mine.
01:54He went on to say his ex-wife has every right to share what was a painful chapter
01:58that changed the trajectory of our marriage and our family nearly 40 years ago.
02:03I respect her right to tell her story, and that's where I'll leave it.
02:07Despite his past actions, Bumpus said he remains endlessly grateful to King
02:10for giving him two of the greatest gifts of his life, their children,
02:14daughter Kirby, who is now 40, and son Will, who is now 39.
02:18Bumpus also credited King for supporting him through Yale Law School,
02:22and says the exes are now in a good place, decades later.
02:26In fact, he called himself a genuine admirer and fan,
02:29who's had a front row seat to Gayle's remarkable success.
02:32As for Gayle, she seems to have kept a good sense of humor about the whole thing,
02:36and her love life in general. Who could forget back in 2024,
02:40when she famously pounced on Lenny Kravitz.
