00:00This is the Waymo Ojai, the first vehicle with Waymo's sixth generation driver which
00:07in the first instance means fewer sensors, about 40% fewer sensors than the prior generation and
00:13that's basically less cameras and one less LiDAR. Yes, named after the city in California but also
00:19a play on, oh hi, the plan is for Waymo to start letting some members of the public take a
00:25ride
00:25in the Ojai in San Francisco, Los Angeles and Arizona sometime in the next few weeks.
00:31At first they're not going to charge a fare for the rides, it's going to be free but the whole
00:36point
00:36is to get rider feedback before they expand it to more cities and open it up to more riders.
00:43It was developed with Zika, a unit of China's Geely where it was designed in Sweden. The
00:50skateboarder main powertrain comes from China but the final assembly of the robotaxi is in Mesa,
00:57Arizona in a facility that Waymo has with Magna. Much more spacious inside, it has these sliding
01:04outward opening doors, there are three larger screens, the system detects if you're riding solo
01:10or if you're riding as part of a group. Waymo wants to build a system for all weather so if
01:15it's raining
01:15or even if it's snowing right, those little wipers go and clean off the sensors meaning that the
01:22system cooperates. It is a much more cost effective, better unit economics vehicle and so at scale that
01:29does change the economics of robotaxi for Waymo.
