00:04on sale this week the 1968 A35 lovely condition runs really well I think the cars they don't make
00:15massive money out but being a commercial there's very few of them around it's surely gonna run
00:2112 grand and I'd like to think a bit more that's it everyone loves commercials they've got a place
00:27in our hearts I think really you remember dad coming home with a van or uncle coming home in
00:31a van it's just a lovely little thing to own oh this is a fair machine the Hummer blimey what
00:38a
00:38motor there's something about being in a Hummer and driving a Hummer it's all American when you're
00:44in a Hummer you can do anything you want and we can see over the hedges go anywhere you want
00:50up
00:50down there across anything this is a nice old tractor there very very special being one owner
00:59from new Wow well it's looking good isn't it oh this will be happy memories driving it yeah great fun
01:07oh it's like a little Aladdin's cave he's a bit of an expert at reversing wow my goodness
01:18just mind your tones
01:24the Matthewsons a dynasty of classic car auctioneers 55 the joys of an auction most people will go to a
01:32house out with something in mind but come away with something different the fun is the chase we'll
01:37have a look and we'll advise you from there you just don't know what's on the end of the phone
01:41what
01:41you're gonna find when you open them doors this is a family's love affair with motors that have lived
01:47a life testing testing most people will buy a car because they can relate to it maybe a car that
01:53dad had
01:53you're selling dreams we're just trying to get everything out obviously after auction really
02:11for the usual routine just been busy we don't know anything else do we just go on don't you go
02:15on get
02:16stuck in just shove this forward you pushing yeah these next two weeks will just be hard out flat out
02:26all the time oh that's easier it's just a big clear out and then within sort of two weeks another
02:33load
02:34coming back in with all that going on I haven't actually seen Derek well yeah I to be fair he
02:43did pop
02:43up for a couple of hours yesterday um and then went oh three years of birth I actually don't know
02:50where he is I don't know how was it in the office busy yeah keep it round I've seen a
02:58lot of people
02:59here today the person I have not seen is Derek yeah tend not to see him after auction to be
03:05honest
03:07tends to stay down at Thornton the Dale or he's usually out collecting something
03:13Derek's not laying low he's been at Thornton the Dale prepping for a visit to an old friend in the
03:19East
03:19Midlands just if we see something and we like it it's a reasonable price we'll have it
03:27there's a point that many collectors reach when they simply run out of space too many bikes too
03:34many cars and they're just not getting used enough so it's time to have a bit of a move around
03:39Robin
03:40rests Leicestershire nest is overflowing so he's identified some items for auction starting with
03:46a BSA Bantam d14-4 it's too uncomfortable to go far on it and a rather smart Honda CD 175
03:56Japanese
03:57bikes are far superior better brake they're a lot better ride some of the old British bikes now when
04:03you get on them you have a job to stop the things Robin plans to deliver the bikes to Yorkshire
04:13at a
04:13later date but today he's saying his farewells before Derek tips up to come yeah let lost in a
04:1835 van lovely condition runs really well I think the cars they don't make massive money but being a
04:27commercial there's very few of them around they are really saleable things on the Willis Jeep it's a
04:33lovely old thing that is had it in France we've done a couple of the D-Day anniversaries take us
04:40on
04:40American veterans round it's just a really really nice thing it's French built it's a 1952 odd kiss
04:47and it was in the French army and finally there's a hefty 1954 stepside Chevrolet pickup with 51,000 miles
04:57on the clock I bought it on the wind one day all I've ever used it for really is to
05:03go and fetch me
05:04firewood in it so you've got the original straight six engine in I believe the 3.8 not the fastest
05:09thing on the road it's quite noisy you get to about 40 and you know you know you're doing 40
05:14mile
05:14now let's have a rattle for all prices the Honda I would hope it's going to do somewhere around about
05:222,000 pounds the SA I'd like to think to do between 15 and 1600 the little Austin van we're
05:28hoping that's
05:29going to be about 12,000 pounds then the Jeep that has got to be 17,000 and then finally
05:36the big
05:37Wilburra my feeling is somewhere around about 15,000 pounds there's lots of cars there but I don't
05:52think I'll ever see so yeah it's a very nostalgic trip and you've come to see some lovely old cars
06:01motorbikes you know I've got his little wallet with him but yeah we'll have to see fantastic I love
06:09seeing them just you know can't get you take your blood can you iconic yeah it's huge there's
06:21something about being in a Hummer and driving a Hummer it's all American when you do see one over this
06:27side of the water it's like wow that's cool or it is in my book anyway and it's the fact
06:34that sitting
06:34in the driver's seat you actually can't reach the other side that's that's quite funny but yeah yeah
06:40no they are cool the Hummer's origins lie with the American military when the Pentagon made a 1 billion
06:50dollar order for a high mobility multi-purpose wheeled vehicle Humvee for short the beast of a
06:58vehicle had a suitably well-muscled fan the one and only Arnold Schwarzenegger who was so impressed
07:03by the Humvee that he persuaded the manufacturers to make a consumer version the Hummer was born
07:10these gas-guzzling beer moths ruled the roads for almost two decades until a combination of General
07:16Motors financial problems and high fuel prices saw the Hummer range axed but it wasn't the end because
07:24the Hummer is back with 80,000 pre-orders for its relaunch as a gargantuan electric vehicle the big
07:31beast still costs a small fortune though I think it's too nice to take off-road I mean I assume
07:42that'd be
07:42good one thing I mean they're big and tall and wide and that but this one has done 28 or
07:4929,000 mile I
07:50think so now I won't take it off road no way it's too good they have to be a pavement
07:55princess for me I
07:56think yeah everything's just twice the size it is over here in it really ah it's just you know
08:03everybody says stuff's like a magic carpet that's a magic carpet it really really is
08:10there you go yeah it's just huge isn't it it's taking up the space with about three cars in here
08:15anyhow isn't it no I don't think it is very practical I think it'll use more fuel to get
08:20anywhere than anything else would I mean you can get lots of people in it can't you and you can
08:24travel in
08:25comfort but yeah I suppose when you drive around if you want to get looked at all the time then
08:29you buy
08:30one of these don't you in the showroom no space is wasted awkward small lots are carefully placed in
08:44small spots but in the yard another gigantic vehicle has rocked up the veteran of the Vietnam War weighs in
08:56at 10 tons and is 25 feet long I genuinely think it's fab this M series US Army truck was
09:06built by Kaiser
09:07Jeep in 1959 and it impressed Dave a fantastic bit of kit I think these are brilliant they just may
09:16make
09:16everything strong and durable and it lasts forever I love over-engineered stuff why just about make it so
09:23it'll just about do the job why not make it so it'll do the job easily and forever you know
09:28and
09:29that's what these guys do quirky little things I think are brilliant absolutely brilliant yeah I love
09:36it to bits I wish I could justify buying one but I don't really need one I just really like
09:41them though
09:42even down to the axles all interchange so if you've got a problem with that one it will fit that
09:47one and
09:47this particular truck has even got a multi-fuel engine which does exactly really what it says
09:53on the tin just brilliant idea in it really that engine will run on just about everything apart
09:57from jam sandwiches really apparently there was three companies that built the engine I think the
10:03only one that's really sought after is they do a turbocharged version which they called the Whistler
10:08apparently because I mean they're a big heavy numb thing anyway aren't they add the fact to the that
10:13they were whistling and apparently you could hear them coming miles away so so the enemy were waiting
10:18for you before you got there they're the ones that people are sort of really are looking for the owner's
10:24perhaps been a little bit optimistic personally I think it's six seven eight thousand pounds I mean
10:31that's a fantastic bit of kit for that sort of money in it really the vendor is hoping for north
10:36of ten
10:38there's only one open it's Bob opened it and so he ain't gonna do that it does give you the
10:44impression that
10:45it will just go on and on forever you know and it has done so far in it here it
10:48is now yeah what a brilliant bit of kit
11:11made it a lot quicker if it weren't the bloody traffic after more than four hours of frustration
11:18Derek's landed in Leicestershire oh thanks right let's go and see oh right then rub yeah not bad
11:29all right good to see you that's a joke keep him well yeah not too bad how about business busy
11:35oh it's
11:36right surrender it's amazing Derek and Rob rest they're old mates from the trade Rob runs a local
11:42MOT and service center and knows what makes Matthewson senior tick Derek it cakes on that pallet apparently
11:49oh oh good good good what do you reckon do it lovely
11:54gorgeous aren't they nice as a bit of take-up ever a while
11:57so we're taking these three then yeah yeah the van the jeep right and this whole beast lovely so she'll
12:03go on last
12:05first up Rob's dug out a bit of Matthewson's treasure I'll tell you what we saved some money
12:14by not having them printed they had cost us six thousand pound an auction that but that's uh we
12:19don't have to do it now because it's all on the computer in it but see that good old days
12:23I can
12:26remember a load of these cars you know no I can't remember people's names let alone much much else excuse
12:31me but I can remember the cars reminiscing over it's back to business the Chevy pickup just not
12:41doing it anymore but it is an exceptional vehicle the motors worth 15 grand because it's so good but
12:47it's gonna struggle to make it the little Austin really might surprise you it's surely gonna run 12
12:55grand and I'd like to think a bit more
12:59but that sounds sweet that old bus don't you what genuine I'll know where that is
13:04gonna have jeep up top little van underneath truck on the back no trouble
13:13that one I'm not sure that I it's somewhere between 15 and 20 in it I think it
13:18ought to be auctioneer's discretion and then I'll go for 17
13:25sure do they are bloody awkward things aren't they aren't they yeah they are especially when
13:30you're a bit fat here we are I'll watch you on with that Austin
13:39steady on mate hang on that's it yeah hang on a minute yeah yeah we'll have her on then Rob
13:49a bit more lovely that boy well done thank you right okay thanks ever so much okay look after
13:57yourself I'll see you soon see ya right I'm gonna love and leave you
14:22they look robust let's play like that I mean that yeah they're all right for what they are it's it's
14:27unusual it's different especially in Pickering we don't see many of them flying about oh this is a
14:37fair machine the Hummer blimey what a motor which speaks for yourself there look really expensive brand
14:43new I can imagine I dread to think what the cost new yeah she's the h2 she's a 2006 model
14:49a six
14:49litre obviously petrol automatic for before yes this is a you less compliant believe it or not
14:5528,000 miles showing one owner since the import into the UK there we go look what a machine where
15:01are
15:01we then I see 16 16,000 then in a way in one at 16,000 one hundred and two
15:06three four just 16
15:08four hundred five here with me at 16 five tell me when you want to jump in five hundred and
15:13six sixteen
15:14six and seven then that looks a lot of car for that at 16,000 seven hundred and eight he
15:19says nine
15:19back at you it's lying down a little bit only at 16,000 nine hundred seventeen thousand he says at
15:25seventeen it's provisional but we'll make a phone call think it's worth more at seventeen thousand and we all
15:30done yes for the first provisional for the second third and last time right it's seventy thousand
15:36provisional all right nice to speak to you all right thanks a lot take care bye thank you he was
15:43pleased he he wanted to sell it so I think he's yeah he's happy oh we'll have fun with this
15:48one
15:48then but yeah all right thank you bye-bye he had a brand new Hummer at 50,000 pounds some
15:55years ago
15:56he just loves them more comfortable than his Bentley so there you go
16:05Derek's Leicestershire collection has attracted attention across the whole Matthewson family
16:10you can't help but smile can you Dave's casting an admiring glance at the little Austin van
16:16everyone loves commercials they've got a place in our hearts I think really you remember dad coming
16:21home in the van or uncle coming home in the van you remember as kids because as a kid we
16:25all just
16:25jumped in the back of the van didn't you didn't have any seat belts you can genuinely remember an
16:31adventure with the commercial they're absolutely great and the nice thing about this one it's got a
16:37rear seat conversion as well so you can take the kids out yeah they have a tendency obviously to rot
16:43that
16:44front wheel throws all the muck in there and you don't knock it out next thing you know all this
16:48area
16:48around here is as rotten as a pear so the quick way of repairing is you take the headlamp out
16:55you take
16:55the indicator off you take that plinth off and they fill that all over so there's no seam they fill
17:02it
17:02all over and then put the indicator on the front with this little van obviously it still retains its seal
17:09down there and the indicators on a nice plinth so to buy that van what is it going to cost
17:15someone you can
17:16buy them cheaper but i think that van will hit 10 000. i could make the decision as to whether
17:21to buy
17:21that van or not in less than a minute yeah if you need longer than a minute yeah maybe you
17:27need to get
17:27out a bit more it's just a lovely little thing to own
17:36charlie's a fan of the pickup it's not a show winning one but it's so honest you could polish
17:43it so that it's nice oily rag it and just quick service up and away you go got a chip
17:48in it there
17:49but that to me is originality if you stood 10 foot away you probably won't see that it's just patina
17:55because if it was rusty there'd be all there wouldn't there and then in 10 years time when
18:00that's got twice as big then i'd probably paint it but for now i think i'd leave it as it
18:03is
18:07and dave's second pick is the willis jeep
18:13real so we just leave it at that i think they're absolutely brilliant obviously they were designed
18:18for a purpose and the purpose wasn't a particularly nice one was it you know who wants to go to
18:21war
18:21we're very lucky we do a few every year they're smart and up and running you need 15 000 if
18:28they're
18:28quite exceptional and they've got a load of bits on i mean some come with the guns and and all
18:32the other
18:33fittings and things then they can push on as much as 20. yeah not particularly quick on the road though
18:3740 45 mile an hour but that's quick enough when you've got no door this particular jeep it's got about
18:42the bare minimum it's got the rope on the front everyone tends to have the rope on the front but
18:46we
18:48don't often see the case for the gun obviously the spare wheel's always on the can's always on and the
18:54shovel and the axe are just about always on and you can get everything for them that's dead straight
19:00in there i love all the little things like that i mean you know that's obviously got a light guide
19:05on anyway so you know you don't get shot out by a mesher smith on your way home tonight yeah
19:10if you
19:10want to see what's happening what's gone wrong there you just turn your headlamp around i mean real cool
19:21we have a clear out and then we have a refill
19:27as promised rob and his wife sarah have brought in the bikes to add to the vehicles derrick collected
19:33i didn't use them very often we'll have a bit of a change yeah as long as you don't change
19:39your
19:39wife you never know you never know cruel i'll have a bit more space oh a lot more space i'll
19:48be able to
19:48get something else to put in the space there'll be something coming along the bike market it's peaks
19:59and troughs a little bit i think we've just had a bit of a trough there seems to be a
20:02bit more interest
20:03hmm paul spotted rob and sarah's bikes right yeah little honda little 175 look lovely little
20:11uh little lightweight ideal for you guys sick of these heavy british iron and thinking of something
20:19a little more user-friendly good little runabout bike really hmm so all right right then good little
20:26bike or if you're on a british version you've got bsa little bsa little bantams and such like
20:32brilliant little machines again nice user-friendly lightweight lightweight easy aren't they don't take
20:39up loads of room in the garage put them at the back of the garage still fit your car in
20:42make a lot of
20:43sense value wise how are they standing up these days thousand pound 1200 maybe maybe
20:51a little bit more honda i would expect the honda mid to late teens bit more usable different generation
21:00dare i say older generation younger generation a bit more in demand supply and demand isn't it
21:24i know you get a lot of tourists in pickering and peltendale but you're not happy in your work
21:29do you think i'd make a profit doing this not if you can't go any further than that
21:34it's a bit of a short trip isn't it well we've had it that long uh we're just short of
21:39space so
21:39we're gonna have to put it outside and hope somebody puts a bid in for it peekaboo
21:44yeah it's to see if your customers are all right or to get the money out of them
21:48do you think i'll get a yorkshire man to ride in this well and pay and pay oh no you've
21:53not
21:53presume that's the foot brake for you so this must be your handbrake
21:57that looks to be in a slightly dangerous position yeah you got your ding-a-ling there as well
22:05oh dear i think the ding-a-ling's gone rusty i suppose it would do up wouldn't it but in
22:11fact
22:11it could be a winter's project oh why need some new tyres though because these are flat
22:27this yeah they're both front yeah i've seen them both running yeah okay no problem
22:31we seem to have got some pigeons move into the barn so uh yeah it was a bit sticky but
22:38anyway we like
22:39we like to be somewhat like tidy don't we so i thought we'll just give it all a quick slush
22:43off
22:44today we are going only down towards molten um to an undisclosed location really uh and we're
22:52collecting an old case tractor that hasn't moved for some time and i believe it was purchased by grandad
23:00their grandad not my runner their grandad when it was new so it's around about a 1948
23:08eight rings a bell don't hold me to that um so i'm going down there to meet
23:12mum and daughter uh they're only local to us so so i know exactly where i'm going
23:24my family on my mother's side have actually farmed around here for generations well the tractor
23:33belonged to my grandfather when he died it would then be passed on to mum
23:39a short hop from thornton le dale sophie hamilton and her mum marian are preparing for paul's arrival
23:47okay are you ready there i am yeah wow
23:57right there we go yes well it's looking good isn't it it does look good
24:03she was a bit dusty wasn't she just a little bit well it's hardly surprising i mean how long has
24:08it
24:08been sat here other than well 30 years 30 years this case tractor arrived on the family farm in 1946
24:19it's typical of the machines that helped transform british agriculture after the second world war
24:25it also comes in a very fetching shade of orange so you would see a case an orange tractor in
24:31the distance
24:31and you would know it was a case brilliant advertising but also it was health and safety
24:39because you you could it was so bright that if there were people about in its way they would
24:45instantly get out of the way which is brilliant it's almost like you know high vis back in 1946
24:55my father had a thrashing business a contracting business just very locally around here you know the
25:03winter months were taken up most days going to different farms it would have been really exciting
25:10you know it'd be like getting the absolute high tech of today arriving thrashing and baling all day long
25:19when it wasn't being used for thrashing it was being used for plowing um so a total workhorse
25:25oh in fact the the chimney's here it goes on that bit over there oh this would be happy memories
25:34sitting on here yeah and driving it yeah great fun well i i'm one of five so there's five girls
25:43in our family all my
25:44sisters live in the south of england now uh none of us are in farming none of the family uh
25:51you know uh
25:52sufficiently interested to uh you know to carry on with it um so you know i'm in my late 80s
26:00and
26:01you know there might be somebody out there who would just enjoy having it that's the important thing
26:17in pickering auction time sees activity ramped up robin's vehicles are up for grabs
26:24oh it is absolutely original isn't it it's got a rear seat in it
26:31the 1968 a35 do you want to do this one did you uh i can do uh only because i've
26:38sold it before a very
26:39good friend of mine bought this some years ago 14 000 pound i think it was then lovely lovely lovely
26:45van
26:45super thing start me on it 10 let's get away at 10 10 250 10 5 10 5 750 11
26:5211 000 pounds absolute
26:54stunner i think it's worth more 11 1 11 100 might be out put a deal together bring you both
27:01together
27:01provisional 11 1 provisional yeah you had a reserve on it of 12 000 pounds we've got 11 100
27:10yeah what's the minimum you'll take okay lovely i'll go back to him and see what he says okay thanks
27:16robin bye-bye oh well what's 11 and a half 12 grand for it hello uh you just had a
27:24bid on the austin a35
27:25um i've just been speaking to the vendor and he did have a reserve on it of 12 000 pounds
27:29but would be
27:30willing to sort of meet you halfway if necessary yeah number five what are you going to do with it
27:36oh
27:36perfect i'm sure i'll accept that bye bye so he owns a deli and a couple of pubs so the
27:44plan is to
27:44have it signed written and then have it a little run around for his uh business perfect
27:53oh the chevrolet gmc we collected it again same group of cars and i've never seen one more original
27:59is it really originally really original there we go look beautifully mellowed interior and so forth
28:04most definitely a keeping vehicle oh yeah there we go then where are we i've got 10 10 250 10
28:095
28:1010 000 5 and 750 at 10 7 50 11 at 11 000 pound then in 250 11 250 bid
28:18and five 11 500 that looks cheap
28:21we'll make a phone call i think they want more 11 500 then for the first second third and last
28:27time
28:29five five you've got to do quite a lot of negotiation a lot of talking yeah when you're
28:35making that call you just never know what the outcome's gonna be by the time friday night comes
28:39i've had enough yeah it's like take me home put my pajamas on and don't talk to me the 11
28:44and a

29:43good afternoon how are you how are you keeping very well thank you good good
29:50paul has made the 10-minute trip to pick up the very orange case tractor is here somewhere yes it's
29:57hiding in this in this shed it's only had one owner one driver and what a wonderful wonderful
30:04thing i think it's great absolutely great anyhow what are we thinking money then miss hamilton where
30:11are we thinking apparently you said to charlotte three to four thousand yeah but but what are you
30:17thinking at the end of the day oh god well no i think we're being advised by you we have
30:22been totally
30:23advised by you right with it being a case with it being in your ownership all this time i think
30:29it
30:29wants guiding three to four uh let's hope we're pleasantly surprised hey it does seem a bit of a
30:35shame it's stuck in the barn not ever really being used or seen yeah it needs to be somebody needs
30:41to
30:41be using it and getting a lot of enjoyment out yeah that's right yeah and i'm sure it's done plenty
30:46of
30:46work but of course it's clear to see in it it's been nurtured and looked after which is how it
30:52survived
30:53well we better get her out haven't we like a little heladine's cave
31:01a day of reckoning a day of reckoning he's a bit of an expert at reversing as well isn't he
31:07oh
31:09crikey it is a machine isn't it i don't know quite how this is all going to work really but
31:14we'll see
31:14oh wow oh that's what we're after just mind your toes
31:26we've got some funny noises going on today haven't we
31:38isn't that a bonnie old tractor though lovely yeah it is
31:43right well i shall hit the road i've got a long way to go you know
31:48thank you very much paul no problem at all nice to see you
31:50so well it's very nice to see you
31:52thank you very much thanks for coming across okay marvellous see you soon oh well bye chrace
31:59bye bye bye paul and with all the blossom out well done 79 years yes it is a long time
32:30you know when it first came i didn't really like it and now the more i look at it the
32:34more i like it
32:35i don't know what it is i don't know why but the family bought it new to run a threshold
32:40which
32:40basically is combined isn't it really 1946 this was well advanced wasn't it it was almost too
32:46much wasn't it a tractor with a pto shaft and they still have them today and it's like you know
32:52from
32:5260 70 80 year ago that was thought of and it's still working now so it was over engineered so
32:59so
32:59much put anything you want on the back of it it's either going to do like i don't know six
33:04thousand
33:05quid or ten thousand quid isn't it you know it could be anywhere so yeah i think i know it's
33:10a big
33:10bracket but it'd be somewhere in that bracket all i thought oh this is a nice old tractor there
33:19i collected this year and it was purchased new back in 1946 here in rydale just down the road
33:27very very special as you'd want to find one there we go uh 18 19 2000 pound bid then and
33:34away at 2000
33:35a lovely bit of history with the tractor there at 2000 pound bid at 2001 2-1 at 2000 2
33:42-2 it's still
33:43provisional molten we'll make the phone call we'll see what we can do it stayed in molten it would be
33:47good yeah staying local there you go look yeah at 22 then provisionally for the first second third and
33:53last time two two molten hello is that marian it's jul here at matthewson's we've got the bid at 22
34:01yeah no that's lovely all right all done that's great thank you very much thank you bye-bye
34:07and they were happy to accept that well it's not going too far away it's going probably about another
34:1210 miles uh west so lovely that's a really nice story isn't it
34:20little under 175 i believe that one in the auction news robin's motorbikes had a mixed reception
34:26oh 1500 and that's very provisional at once the honda sold for 1850 in a timed auction you all know
34:35what they're worth a thousand pound to start me one thousand pound eleven hundred eleven hundred
34:39twelve twelve hundred pound absolute bargain surely but the bantam had no takers and went back to
34:46leicestershire and i need more what are you gonna do with that oh lord that's a bit interesting a bit
34:52quick no engine to run on just about everything if you're peeing the tank it'll run by the sound of
34:58it so 8 500 what a bit of kit 9 000 250 got more machine we need a bit more
35:04money the kaiser truck
35:05also failed to attract a buyer and there's one other item that looks like it will never sell
35:14what we got here bloody rickshaw bloody thing's been around forever in it how long has this actually
35:18been here about five years i think they're good sellers you know you know we get a lot of this
35:25stuff abandoned on us you know someone brought it down and thought ah i'll bet that one might 500
35:30quid and it's getting bit of 45 quid and it makes them realize then it ain't worth anything so leave
35:37it with them they'll sort it out i ain't got the legs for pedals anymore so it's of no interest
35:42to me
35:43whatsoever in fact to be perfectly truthful look it's a death trap in it you know you know what i
35:50want
35:50really rather than this sitting here i want this bit here clear that's what i want whoever owns it
35:55come and get it get it gone please derek's wish was granted the rickshaw is no longer in yorkshire
36:01the owner came back to collect it
36:16when you're in a hummer you can do anything you want and we can see over the hedges go anywhere
36:22you
36:23want up down dale across anything we're so lucky having this you know so lucky the resplendently
36:32blue hummer hasn't traveled much further than its hefty wheelbase to find a new home it stayed in
36:38yorkshire it's now owned by retired businessman john paley and he's loving it oh it's just like riding on
36:47air it's just pure elegance it's just pure comfort it's just so silky it just takes everything in its
36:54stride you know you feel absolutely nothing with the big tires and the air suspension the ride
37:01comfortability and everybody has said oh i can't believe it i can't believe it john loves showing off
37:08his new purchase it's a main machine look at tires you know it just looks the pattern yeah today is
37:16his
37:16grandkids connie will and jacob it is yeah it's like new in the handles come off that's brilliant
37:25even the odd fault is easily sorted that's it that's it it's back on that's bloody typical
37:34and this is no short-term fling it's a long-term love affair that started when john hooked up with
37:41a
37:41friend who was a car dealer let me look at one of the numbers and as soon as i heard
37:46it soon as i saw
37:47it just poised lovely i said right order me one and that was my first one within 2002 was a
37:54black one
37:55i had that two or three years and i got a pickup one called a soot which had the bull
38:01bar on the front
38:02and then i woke up one morning and i realized i had eight cars and i thought why do i
38:09need eight cars
38:10and we had them all sold within a week everybody thought i'd gone bankrupt because i sold all these
38:16cars which i haven't but the hummer bug never totally disappeared and a trip to pickering revived
38:23it this hummer was sat there and i just walked around it opened the doors looked i said it's mine
38:29i'm having it simple as that the bug was well and truly back after buying the blue hummer he bought
38:36a
38:36black one to go with it it's cool isn't it yeah i mean it's not the first one but maybe
38:42not not might
38:43not be the last one either but uh definitely a head turner all the seats are like feel rock hard
38:49nice and
38:50comfy go to sleep if you're on a long car drive if you want they just go anywhere you can
38:55take them
38:55off-road and go anywhere you want and people get out your way so you feel like the boss
39:02it's great to look at on the drive but it's out on the road where john and the hummer are
39:07happiest
39:09a hummer well there's nothing like it it is to me the the vehicle
39:16oh i think somebody's in a midlife crisis even though even though i'm 87
39:25so she's there if another one comes she's going
39:40i've always loved the look of the willys jeep and then my father he was in the army
39:47during the war and he said that he drove one and he said they were absolutely brilliant he said you
39:53could drive them anywhere the hotchkiss willys jeep which has stood in the civilian garage for the
40:01last few years has been reunited with some fellow military travelers
40:05new owner errol now has the chance to trundle through the fens that surround his home
40:10in ramsey in cambridgeshire with some nostalgic enthusiasts well you have to watch a road all the
40:17time especially around the fence because the roads are sinking and you'd soon be in the duke or
40:22wherever no it's a job to explain it's just puts a smile on your face buying the jeep means errol
40:31can
40:31now team up with a gang of local aficionados mark chrissy and lindsay who have a vast amount of
40:37experience when it comes to military vehicles i love the noise and the smell of it i really do go
40:44in the
40:46character as errol is finding out they take some handling when you're driving one of these you're
40:51really in contact with the road yeah you know when you're driving the modern car you can steer it with
40:55one finger if you like you know don't take your mind off the road or other drivers for a single
40:59second you get arnhem ass cheek one buttock goes to sleep if you've been driving it for too long and
41:04you keep shifting around in the seat trying to make a little bit more comfortable it's just a shame that
41:08dad weren't allowed to see that i've got one it's like my grandson he loves anything to do with second
41:14world war i'm going to take it to the the junior school where he is for for a day just
41:20so as the
41:21kids can see in it and and everything it seems that perhaps accidentally errol has bought a fine example
41:29although there were teething problems a bit disappointed when i got there because i couldn't
41:33get beyond the steering wheel why how i'll come back and i had a word with mark i said i
41:41couldn't
41:41get beyond the steering wheel he said take the padding off the back of the seat that's why i've
41:46got no padding on the back of the seat how the hell did john wayne get in a jeep how
41:52did that happen
41:56the driving might not be about comfort but it's an experience all the same oh people always stop and
42:03turn and look at it put their hand up and wave the wife's been in it yeah yeah yeah she
42:10wasn't very
42:11keen to start with oh no no seat belts no airbags but when you're in you have to smile you're
42:18small
42:18because you ain't doing 100 mile now you're only doing 30 40 miles an hour but there's also a serious
42:26side to running around the fens in convoy when you ride these back rows in these vehicles you
42:32instinctively know you're retreading the path that the americans did prior to d-day these rows were
42:37absolutely littered with these vehicles yeah whenever i drive mine i mean i forever think of my uncle drove
42:43we drove one in the desert yeah 1942 in benghazi yeah and then got captured for the next umpteen years
42:50in prisoner of war camp you can't help but think about those things yeah yeah i agree these these
42:55linked remember these vehicles are a symbol of freedom uh there was a hard-fought freedom
43:02oh i love it to bits love it to bits yeah my grandson i took him out backed in his
43:08drive his mom come
43:09out and he said to his mom i hope granddad don't sell this
43:16oh
43:28oh
43:28oh
43:28oh
43:28oh
43:28oh
43:29oh
