Transcript
00:04on sale this week there we are showman's caravan should be a couple of telephone bidders on this
00:10one ladies and gentlemen i look at this and think wow but this is special isn't it i still think
00:17it's gonna rip them steady turn left it gets closer yeah for a minute a bit tight 264 1982
00:27mazda 323 it's not the most popular sought after car in the world i don't have many people coming
00:35and say tell what i've been looking for been really looking for a blue mazda as long as it don't
00:41fall
00:41apart it will just keep going and going at 24 000 miles blimey ah now 250 first tesla oh is
00:50it the
00:50start of something new very different it's very very very different yeah
00:58isn't it weird
01:00it is quite relaxing it's quite effortless really
01:04have you googled to see where the nearest charger is no
01:10the matthewsons a dynasty of classic car auctioneers
01:1655 the joys of an auction most people will go to a sale with something in mind but come away
01:21with
01:21something different the fun is the chase we'll have a look and we'll advise you from there
01:25you just don't know what's on the end of the phone what you're gonna find when you open them
01:29doors this is a family's love affair with motors that have lived a life testing testing most people
01:36will buy a car because they can relate to it maybe a car that dad had we're selling dreams right
01:42here we go
01:52the working week has just begun but things are already busy at classic car hq in pickering
02:08and when there are vintage vehicles to collect on the other side of yorkshire it pays to set the alarm
02:14early
02:19we're off down to hull and i don't honestly know what i'm going to look at
02:25we've got angie in the back look she's jumped in yeah surprise phone call fancy a ride out
02:32well you see the thing is it was either you or the girlfriend but she was busy so i thought
02:35i'd
02:36ring you the collection paul and angie are off to recce is big very big i'm going in blind i've
02:45no idea
02:46i did hear a whisper of a caravan and pedal car we'll see what there is and then we'll devise
02:53a plan
02:53and see what's to come what's not to come but once i'm going in me comfy pickup truck rather than
03:00a
03:00bumpy old lorry my dad was a bit eccentric he was always up to something basically he had project
03:11after project lee lambert's dad jim was a local legend an alchemist who could turn rusty metal into
03:18motoring treasure and unlikely vehicles into full-blown homes from home this is a morris
03:25camper van met in the 1970s by my dad he made it himself designed it himself he said he'd spoke
03:33to
03:33morris and they said it's not possible to make the camper van and he said i think i can do
03:37it and
03:38and then and he did it lee's mate dean is also an admirer decent battery you see and it's a
03:50morris
03:50thousand if it doesn't make the reserve i might have to keep it and start using it again i'm tempted
03:55now it's out i'm tempted excitement's there yeah if not he'll just have to keep the reminder
04:06these scaled down models were also handmade by jim
04:10they have 50 cc puck engines in them you can get in and drive them they are restricted so you
04:16can't go
04:16too fast and run away from your mom and dad so this is a 1957 willoughby vogue caravan and i
04:27believe
04:28there was only in production for one year and i believe now there's maybe only two or three left
04:32in the world it's a lot bigger than what it looks but the undisputed star of the collection is this
04:40former circus showman's caravan from the 1930s i think it's a very rare vehicle and i think it did
04:47belong to billy smarts if you were thinking of running away to join the circus there used to be
04:59one obvious choice billy smarts along with many of his 22 brothers and sisters billy worked on
05:06fairgrounds until he went into the big top business from 1947 when his circus was first broadcast on
05:15the bbc his name meant the thrills and spills of the big top with its clowns acrobats and of course
05:21animals including a troop of 20 elephants ultimately much of it fell foul of changing tastes particularly
05:30attitudes to performing animals but that name though billy smarts means circus to the baby boom generation
05:43if you see the picture of it was when he put it in here you'd have thought it was firewood
05:48on a chassis
05:49it took him from my knowledge two to three years from start to finish to do this yeah i think
05:55he's even
05:56bought the clowns ornaments probably from the car boat sale now my dad it's unique and one of a
06:02kind well you've got your letter box and you've got an original bell still works still working
06:12there's nobody home
06:19pickering hq you should expect the unexpected here and dave's booking in for some counseling
06:26with a car that transformed the image of electric vehicles
06:31great to see you yeah likewise mate you're right yeah good to see you well done but electric though
06:37steve yes unfortunately i knew you'd say that
06:42you know how that works then oh oh that's a bit fancy in it you know i've never had much
06:51to do
06:52with them at all i remember one of our customers turning up in one at thorns and down on the
06:56forecourt
06:56there and it was like what the bloody hell is that dave's first drive in a tesla a radical introduction
07:05to the present day we'll see how it pulls off in a minute see what 500 horsepower does in an
07:13electric
07:30car yeah
07:30and how much was this one you see i paid uh 80 000 pounds for each year entry belt 17
07:38but i got free
07:40supercharging for life what are they worth now the range i think is 25 to 35 right okay
07:46it is quite relaxing it's quite effortless really have you googled to see where the nearest charger is
07:53no
08:01i don't think i would sign up for a new one at 80 90 hundred thousand i don't think they
08:05quite
08:06turn me on that much but yeah use one that's sensible money yeah the only little tiny bit
08:13that's just just a little bit is somebody somewhere can control that car the big brother bit is the
08:21only bit that's a little bit spooky yeah there might be a future selling electric cars matthysons
08:27we'll try we'll see how it goes yeah we'll see what feedback we get with steven's tesla and go from
08:33there so yeah watch this space nick i'll report back in a few weeks time
08:54paul and ang have made it to hull where lee lambert his pal dean and one vast collection await
09:02hey up how are you how are you late how are you late paul dean dean
09:11there she is needless to say not been out for a year or two then no i'll tell you what
09:17that is
09:17absolutely great in it in it bro it was all done in the street this and he even sprayed it
09:23in the street
09:23yeah what do you think it's great i think it's great i used to sleep up there i was just
09:30thinking
09:31where did you all sleep you must have been little the tape that that's the bed yeah as a child
09:35i sleep
09:35up there and it was great you thought you were sleeping somewhere posh father was on about a camper
09:42he's only short yeah he'd be able to get laid out across it
09:52as far as i know it's a 1957 willoughby vogue caravan which was in production for one year only
09:59it's a marmite thing isn't it yeah i get it it's not for me like i think it's the ugliest
10:04thing in the
10:04world but i get it you know yeah could be my new home when paul starts snoring
10:14everything is floating paul's boat it's lovely in it yeah brilliant but there's only one star
10:22generally speaking i'll be completely honest i look at these and i think they're great aren't
10:26they and i walk off that's that's that's it and and i must be getting older or something because i
10:31now
10:31look at this and think wow everything else is lovely but this is special in it this is very
10:41special now you'll have a figure in your head for this there's just no way of knowing no no no
10:46that's
10:46what i was putting on you it's unique what can you do just whatever it makes whatever it makes i
10:51think
10:51that's it are we gonna take it all oh no i'm turning into me dad um yeah we've got to
11:08haven't we
11:10i've got to move the kitten to get the caravan so i've got to move that caravan to get to
11:13that caravan
11:14and i've got to move in all them little step throughs to get to that so you might as take
11:18them
11:18back at base the weather is bringing prospective buyers out in droves
11:31it's been an amazing week actually but yeah they do look good in the sun
11:38i've got a list of potential purchases that i've got too many to go through
11:49i was brought up with marinas and stuff like that and escorts and you were brought up with
11:54imprezzo turbos my first actual memory was being strapped to the roll cage in your imprezzo and just
11:59hearing the rumble of it and that's the first thing i remember but no it's brilliant
12:07amongst the lots in the next auction is this 1982 mazda 323 and you won't find many as well traveled
12:16yeah strange that ain't it bought in dubai yeah mazda 323 now you wouldn't think
12:22there'd be dozens of these floating around dubai in 1982 would you in all fairness
12:28to be fair it's the sort of car that as long as it don't fall apart it will just keep
12:33going and
12:33going at 24 000 miles blimey
12:431977 jubilee year virginia wade wins wimbledon the sex pistols bring anarchy to the uk and the mazda 323
12:51makes its first appearance on britain's streets it was mazda's first full-blown modern hatchback
12:58and rode the late 70s boom in popularity for three and five door cars but at heart it was still
13:05just a
13:05family runaround by the 90s mazda had really jazzed things up though down went the nose up popped the
13:13headlights and in went a range topping 138 horsepower engine they called it the fastback
13:21this sleek shape was said to have pushed forward to come up with the focus
13:25what it did do is set the template for the modern mazda hatchbacks we see today
13:38it's not the most popular sought after car in the world i don't have many people coming and say
13:44tell you what i've been looking for i've been really looking for a blue mazda
13:48i think there will be a number of people who will have two thousand pounds for it because it's for
13:51nothing at two thousand pound but i don't think there'll be many that would have over three for
13:55it if i'm honest so i'm thinking yeah very late twos
14:06264 1982 master 323 you know when we were retailing this sort of stuff down south you got one
14:12of these and that you were just so so pleased serviced it out it went never see it again till
14:17it came back in in part exchange marvelous little car never wear it out on south in the word go
14:23here
14:23we go 2700 quid 27 28 28 i've got 2900 three three thousand two three thousand two hundred three
14:31four three four back to middlesbrough 37 four four thousand forty one four four four four there you go
14:40forty four forty five forty six forty seven forty eight forty nine middlesbrough
14:47forty nine hundred pounds do you want five five yeah five five thousand five thousand pound i bet
14:54it wouldn't be much above six grand new that 51. you're out are you he's out 5100 miller's with
15:01the buy up 5100 pound going for the first second third and last time 51. so your mum's mazda has
15:08depreciated by 199 pounds in 43 years
15:25it's an operation today operation showman's have you not heard
15:32operation showman and we've got blueprint sketched out up there no problem at all yeah yeah
15:45oh 900 hours and the convoy hits the road journey time one hour destination
15:52hull and they're fully equipped how lovely is that
16:05when faced with a pile of vehicles like lee lambert's dad left it pays to have a plan
16:13so blueprint there we go so i'm in that lorry it's down there i want a reliant on top and
16:21then the
16:21showman's morris motorhome it'll drive on to me and rock and then the egg egg on the trailer
16:28what could i do go wrong what could go wrong well wait and see yeah yeah
16:38no no
16:42nah she's locked up in it
16:50front wheels are locked up
16:53it isn't normally a good start
17:09this is it yeah this is finally going now i'll have to enjoy this short period of driving it before
17:14it goes thankfully the morris camper moves under its own steam
17:20morning thousand a new battery and a bit of fuel and off the go there's no damp in that it's
17:27not
17:27like a modern caravan five years down the line you've got a soggy wall not in that
17:34it's all going according to plan so far then so far well you've got one on
17:40one out of a mountain
17:50let's go
17:51well right you have to back god almighty boys yeah
18:04go on charlie off you go
18:07right jobs are cheering me i'll through
18:17they've cleared off now i know they don't want to do this one do they
18:23this one is the 1930s showman's caravan formerly a billy smart circus it's going to be a right
18:30performance shifting it
18:40right there nice and steady it's happening it's happening
18:44now for some precise maneuvering inch perfect in fact
18:49all right above
18:52i still think it's going to rip them here i don't think it is
19:01tight on that steady and right turn left it gets closer yeah for a minute
19:10like that
19:12a bit tight literally that and it
19:18we're going to have to handball that where are we going
19:24go on all the way yeah
19:28can we turn
19:31there you go get the tractor on the bugger
19:36all right darling yeah steady away
19:40i've had sleepless nights to be honest worrying about it that it won't come out
19:43so it's been done i'm really happy really happy sometimes best laid plans do actually work to a t
20:12right there's only two pedals no foot throttle it's all on the steering wheel but i don't know which one's
20:18which
20:25the massive hull hall is back at pickering hq
20:37come on come on come on come on
20:48oh she's flooded jackie get that choking go on go on
20:54hey hey you just stick with me me all through i'll keep it right you want a bit of choke
20:59now
20:59oh oh you weren't quick enough there were you go on mate
21:13in amongst the big items a novelty bicycle made for two
21:17right right ready go on i shall follow you
21:20go yeah we're going slow down man you've got no brakes
21:38dave's eye has wandered to the petite perfectly formed miniatures
21:43they're brilliant aren't they absolutely brilliant
21:46what are they uh expensive ornaments
21:53these model cars are a bit more use than ornament though
21:58yeah little engine sat in there look little engine sat in that one pedal pedal
22:03little engine i think sat in the ford little engine in the little bugatti replica
22:10can you squeeze in that sir i'll tell you what sir if you can get in that and we can
22:16put the roof on
22:17i'll buy it for you this is where either we have to call an osteopath
22:23the fire brigade or or claire for a checkbook hang on the leg stuck hang on hang on hang on
22:29to be fair that's almost as comfortable as a real size one yeah
22:40to get a lineup like that all at once yeah a one-off really very lucky yeah one-off
22:46you're very lucky
22:51little austin seven little two-stroke fiberglass body to scale lovely i've got three hands all
22:58came at the same time three two andrews phone three three says charlie three four says mark charlie's
23:05there's a bit there at four eight it was at four eight now they're thinking
23:10at four thousand eight hundred pound for the third and last time
23:16the bugatti fetched almost as much
23:19four thousand says mark alan shaking his head then for the first
23:23four thousand pound mark's telephone for the second third and last time
23:28the pick of the bunch though was the ford truck we got two one two two two three two nine
23:35charlie's
23:35telephone three thousand three got eight nine now do you want four grand three thousand nine and
23:42five five five i just got you dave four eight there's only us and one other bloke now
23:47five two five five back in with charlie for the first for the first our bid for the second third
23:53and
23:53last time charlie it's your man on your phone sold well done well done everybody all together
24:00there were four small-engined miniatures and they fetched just shy of eighteen thousand pounds
24:14no prizes for guessing what you took no we're coming this guys mark and janet wilson have headed
24:22here from the lake district to collect a skoda with their name on it he's hankered after one of
24:28these for quite a long time but i've never really given in but i saw this week on the line
24:33and we
24:33came to have a look at it a couple of weeks ago and put a bid on and we won
24:37we put the seats back
24:40and the guys in the parking lot didn't even know the seats went back so really yeah so you get
24:46extra
24:46seats but they're hidden
24:55and there we go extra seats
25:02i ain't picked sure
25:07job done aye yeah well for now for now
25:22you could live in one of these couldn't you even now absolutely beautiful lovely lovely bit of kit
25:30derrick's made himself right at home in the 1930s showman's caravan look at that stove beautiful i'll
25:38tell you what get that going 20 minutes it'd be red hot in here wouldn't it be like opening all
25:43these
25:43windows and the door a little bit of heat out the only thing you're lacking is like proper washing
25:49facilities shower and all the rest of it but i know exactly what they'd have done in the old days
25:54aren't you i mean they'd have had a tin bath i can fill me ass now scraping along the bottom
25:58of a tin bath
26:00honestly i can in in london until me dad built an extension and put a bathroom in which was just
26:05oh
26:05heaven absolute heaven don't waste water two of you got in um so you had to wait until someone
26:11from next door came around and got in with you i don't think it happened quite so much with the
26:16adults but but the last thing you want to be is last anyway it's great absolutely fantastic i love
26:24it to bits i think it's value is 10 grand i can't tell you what it's going to make but
26:28it's going to
26:28cause a lot of interest amongst half a dozen people from the same stable as the showman another
26:40derrick pleasing conversion in the shape of the morris camper he's got everything right about the
26:46color and everything he's got it dead right do you think he's got enough mirrors on it i think he
26:51probably has he was obviously safety conscious the old lad probably not done much work in the last
26:58few years i would think it's clearly stood around a bit there's a little bit of corrosion down here
27:03i can't speak from underneath obviously have to have a look underneath but i wouldn't imagine for
27:08one minute he's daft enough to have done all that lovely work and conversion on a rotten vehicle
27:14i mean you know it don't happen does it you're not got loads and loads of room but you're good
27:22enough for a week aren't you the pair of you to get on in there got your basic cooking equipment
27:27here
27:28and a little sink for washing up and that's really all you need and you shape the table like that
27:33so
27:33you can get past it to sit over there it's he's done a lovely job there's always someone wants to
27:39put
27:39their own stamp on it and i understand that completely but really it doesn't really want
27:44anything just wants enjoying there we are showman's caravan should be a couple of telephone bidders on
27:54this one ladies and gentlemen there's something about that old caravan that really really is
27:58it's great it's brilliant eleven thousand two hundred and fifty pound eleven two fifty eleven five
28:04eleven thousand five and seven fifty a 12 000 pound in worthing on sale a 12 000 pound 13 250

29:03sold 18 000 one 18 100 pounds yeah which is strong money i feel for that for 20 000
29:12quid you could arguably have one created maybe maybe but you're not gonna have that one are you
29:18quite the performance from the showman's caravan next on the bill the morris camper
29:23i know what dave would be thinking if my granddad was still here we'd be buying it for him and
29:29just
29:29there you go granddad just play with it like we really would there you are three thousand pound
29:34of the way we've got a three thousand pound 31 31 31 32 33 34 34 let's just let charlie

30:40them off did you hear him shove him in the back of the van yeah lovely right well we'll leave
30:48it with
30:48you and if we manage to uh escape and nobody knows where we are we'll maybe turn up on the
30:53isle of
30:53white you never know same stable same day out the lads had a big day out collected a bit of
31:00all sorts
31:01and there were buyers for just about every other lot from the whole collection too

31:32oh my lord here we go look oh no you'll be all right though with carol up carol up yeah
31:39i can see
31:39carol up back of that yeah 600 pounds then for the first second third and last time at 600
31:45100 we'll have to have a ball later on yeah
32:11it's the quickest starting petrol series land rover i've ever heard
32:19very different it's very very very different yeah isn't it weird well that's one way of describing
32:29the tesla model x they're cool because the power is on tap isn't it you you sense touching the throttle
32:37and you've gone but no i'd rather drive around in that yellow beetle for the rest of my life
32:45i'm not quite sure how it snuck its way into a classic and vintage vehicle sale
32:50because it's not very classic it's not very vintage you could argue it's not really a vehicle is it
32:56really it's got a brain it's so futuristic but i'm not futuristic mate i don't know what half of this
33:05stuff does 40 years you've gone from that peugeot to all this technology and it's crazy really isn't it
33:13when you think about it
33:18value-wise i mean they're like 100 plus i'm told to buy aren't they new but they're going to depreciate
33:26so

36:23we're happy to say mark made it to a charging point in the nick of time
36:27and the tesla has been on many more trips since
36:42it's just when you've seen it it just it was just lovely wasn't it it's beautiful so when i've seen
36:48it i said i'll have to have it the showman's caravan which used to tour with billy smart circus
36:55has ended up in leir just south of glasgow while some of the locals may be oblivious to its obvious
37:02charms william townsley loves it in fact he really loves it
37:09i don't know when the novelty will wear away that maybe never wear away but it's lovely it's beautiful
37:17it's unique a one-off could be the find of the century this one
37:23it's just like a jewel in the crown in it
37:31our southern company they built carriages for the royally and that's why it's called a royal windsor
37:37gold leaf quite expensive then quite expensive 23 and a half carat gold yes i'm very proud of it
37:45yeah and then we've got a gold leaf here on the mantelpiece we've got a bit on the roof
37:50and then we've got it white lined everybody that's seen it loved it and they were amazed about the size
37:56of it inside
37:57it isn't just the decor this is a practical little home from home
38:02what about the sleeping arrangements well the sleeping arrangements here is you've got a double bed
38:08which pulls out to there uh at the back here you've got bunk beds there at the back
38:16uh then you've got your the mirror which way they'll have me in it then i'll have you in it
38:25eye mirror mirror on the wall who's the fairest of them all if you can see there that matches up
38:32with
38:33the cabinets up in the corner up there as well on the mantelpiece then you've got this flip over table
38:40here if you want to sit and get your tea or dinner whatever you may be well you can drop
38:45this down for
38:46your sit there put your cup of tea there sit back and enjoy it home from home
38:55home from home hey a king could live in this
39:03but as william and his daughter pisa know very well the real joy of the showman's delight is when the
39:08scottish weather threatens to take a turn for the worse that's when all the creature comforts come into
39:14their own what do you think about it it's beautiful yeah really nice it was sunday's home
39:25so to be sat in it having a cup of tea it must be a privilege
39:32there's no many of them here this is only one i've seen in maddie i've never seen another one
39:37there's not many folks sitting down this the day is there in their wee trailer
39:56the isle of wight it's britain in miniature 50 years ago you go around in the morris house and it's
40:03not
40:03out of place people see you they wave and um beat their horns at you but it's not uncommon to
40:11see
40:1250 60 70 year old cars go around the island they say a visit to the isle of wight is
40:18the nearest thing
40:19to time travel the britain office what's this lovely yeah
40:27oh you are oh here we go
40:33it's slower pace of life is the ideal backdrop for the converted morris camper van which was bought
40:39by island residents malcolm and julie cox they called her jill
40:47we started off our driving careers with morris thousands in fact morris travelers
40:54so i said to julie who's always wanted another one i said i'll get you a morris traveler for your
41:0170th
41:02birthday so come march i opened up the auction catalogue and i said let's have a look and see what's
41:08worth bidding on um up came a picture of jill and julie said she's mine that's mine i want that
41:16one
41:17it was a combination of the fact it was a camper and a morris because i've always dreamed of when
41:23i
41:24retire of having a camper van and we could just go off and i've got both in one go so
41:31it was love at
41:33her side it was absolutely the island has a thriving and welcoming morris scene and jill stirred up a
41:42bit of a commotion today's gathering is in her honor i think it's amazing really because it it encompasses
41:51both sides of the morris miner it's the joy of owning a morris miner and they've got the joy of
41:57actually
41:57living in a morris miner which encompasses both things it's like a snail they actually live inside
42:05their own morris miner so i'm really envious bread whoa so julie we're certainly making use of all the
42:16facilities aren't we we certainly are got the kettles on tea brewing it's fabulous absolutely
42:23fabulous i love her there's not a lot of room down there and you've managed to have a few nights
42:28in
42:28there yep because the table goes down and then the cushions come across and you have a bed
42:35not designed for two only one i think he's gonna have to be in the awning outside
