05:24i love driving it and knowing that you wouldn't see another one you might get passed by e-type
05:31drags and aston martins but you weren't going to get passed by a toyota saliga
05:36andrew longmuir has had his for more than 30 years but it's not your common or garden saliga
05:43it's the toyota saliga supra it's got a 2.8 twin cam electronic ignition in it nice cruising car
05:51for someone my age it's quite a firm ride so time to let it go
06:00the reason i partly that i kept it for so many years was that i was going to give it
06:06to my son but
06:09he got married and had a child and uh sort of the thought of being responsible for the car
06:18putting it back on the road has waned a bit
06:21it was one of the delights of owning it was driving it round and people not realizing what
06:27it is because i don't think many people will see them
06:35toyota's answer to datsun's all-conquering 280z was a stretched out version of the saliga
06:41powered by a straight six-cylinder engine they gave it a new badge and the saliga supra was born
06:48the first gen looked the part even if the performance lacked a bit of punch
06:52still rear-wheel drive and fuel injection made it a fun if not exactly earth-shattering ride
06:591982 saw the arrival of a totally remodeled 2.8 litre version complete with an eight-band
07:05graphic equalizer that made your spandau body tapes sound like tony hadley was in the passenger seat
07:12the new supers first arrived in strictly limited numbers and like big hair and shoulder pads not
07:18many survived the 80s it's reckoned there are fewer than 10 left in the country today
07:31right inside it's a bit dusty it's got air conditioning cruise control it's a five-speed manual box
07:42which is a bit unusual as well most of them are automatics it's obviously got a limited slip diff
07:48the handling of it is enjoyable there's never been any question about my love for the car but now
07:58to see it ending up like this i need to get something done about it it would be nice if
08:05it went for
08:08well anything more than three and a half thousand
08:22it's classic car wash day and proving he's as much a dab hand with a chamois leather as a gavel
08:29is the washer upper in chief what a lovely car lovely car lovely color absolutely bangle
08:40how many cars i've washed and cleaned if i've washed 10 000 must be must have washed 10 000 or

08:47or more and probably cleaned half of that and more i don't know really
08:54wouldn't really bother me if i didn't wash any more you know really
09:01i suppose basically i'll wash and clean probably 20 25 a week for

09:35it is simply one of the most beautiful shapes ever crafted i mean it's kind of mozart in 3d isn't

09:53this particular example is a db6 mark ii only 170 something like that mark twos were made for the uk

10:05this car is an extraordinary example because it is an unrestored example but when you look at it you
10:12would never know it is absolutely beautiful if you come and take a peek inside
10:18the interior well i just think is magical i truly do right there we go i mean driving down the
10:28road
10:28a beautiful sound isn't it oh absolutely you can't beat it absolutely and the extraordinary thing is
10:33because this is an unrestored example i'm actually not scared to use it i prefer not to be out in
10:40the
10:40rain but if it rains it rains but here we go look at that one fat lump this is unrestored
10:48yes people i
10:50suppose care enough for these things to make sure that they will survive in fabulous condition and you've
10:57been very very proud to own it yeah absolutely it would be a lie to say i don't feel good
11:03driving up the
11:03road in it because i do feel good every time i go out i'm driving a victory lap
11:13and the sound have you listened to a car going past
11:22the db6 is the jewel in aiden's collection but he's also partial to the odd ng
11:31they're pretty they really are they are so so lovely and they're very affordable very manageable
11:36if you're looking for cheap uh classic car this is the one to buy this is not like a modern
11:43car it's
11:43not an ipad with a wheel at each corner you know this is what i like to call an analog

11:50whenever i go out in this one and we do go out in them whenever i go out on this
11:54i feel i'm in a miss
11:56marple film this is a sleek neat car there's no door handles on the mga do you athletically get in
12:06by no you've got a string that you have to pull on the inside although the problem with that is

12:13it's raining and the windows up and the roof is on it's a bit of a challenge to actually open

12:22aiden's already got plans for the cash from the sale he's giving it all to the charitable causes
12:27he supports we can invest heavily in educational projects we run a school in india which is a
12:34charitable school we also have a big interest in a new school in birmingham and as i was looking at
12:40this i thought it's a beautiful car but it's a thing and i'm turning this thing and indeed some
12:45of the other things here we are going to be turning that into people change lives i don't just want
12:53somebody to stick it in a museum how much better is it to actually experience the past by driving it
13:00yeah you could stick it in a garage disconnect the battery and say i'll come back in 15 years
13:06but where's the fun in there now this is a car i'm hoping somebody will
13:10love it for what it is and use it because of what it is
13:20few british marks inspire such affection as a vintage sunbeam well built reliable and fun to drive
13:28the roots manufactured talbots rapiers and alpines have always done well at the pickering auctions
13:35lot number 482 sunbeam talbot 90 100 genuine car third and last time provisionally
13:43lot number 32 is the sunbeam rapier hammer coming down at 67

13:59there are a couple of alpines coming up in the next auction one a full-on restoration job the other
14:06finished to perfection do you know what every now and then an item turns up doesn't it and you think
14:14oh i like that i like that that's that item for me in this auction that's my car
14:23i've got a thing about wheels see i like nice wheels and it sits up nice very often they're a
14:28bit tired a bit saggy you know you open the door they drop a bit this one doesn't it just

14:34nice all right gap's not perfect it's not perfect on the body but it just i don't know it just

14:40me in for some reason and i could quite happily run about next summer in that car brilliant absolutely
14:46great yeah yeah so i like that car the pros of buying one that somebody else has restored you're
14:52not too sure what's under that glossy green are we but you can drive it if you want one your
14:58spec if
14:59you want to know what's underneath it everything else then you restore one don't you and how much
15:04would you be looking for this one i haven't seen any figures to be fair but i would have thought
15:08that's going to be like seven or eight grand i would have thought as opposed to probably two or
15:12three grand over there here we go look wanting a bit of love but look further than first impressions
15:26it's not as bad as it may seem not for a sunbeam it's not rotten like a sunbeam very often

37:11North of the border, in the fine city of Glasgow, it's not just the architecture that's a feast for the
37:17eyes.
37:18We have 305 GT Turbo. There's only about three or four left in the UK and I've got one of
37:24them.
37:25Neil Clark's been building up a collection of cars that tell a story of hot hatch speed.
37:31The Toyota GT4. It's a great car to drive. It's phenomenal. It really is. And it does turn heads.
37:36But there's two of them together.
37:38Is there two GT4s?
37:40Two of them? Yeah. Why not? I'd have four if they're good.
37:44All of which brings us nicely to Neil's latest acquisition, the 1986 Celica Supra.
37:51They came in to the country. You only could get ten at a time. They wouldn't allow any more in,
37:58which was surprising. And obviously, they were expensive. Back then, to have a car which was
38:04145 brake horsepower was just unbelievable. That was like, you know, it was a rocket.
38:07We were running about in cars at 70, 80 horsepower. The design features on those cars, I mean,
38:12they went to a lot of brother to get this car to look the way it is. It cried out
38:17for me to buy it.
38:18But a car that hadn't moved in a while had some issues that needed a bit of left-field thinking
38:24to fix.
38:26We got the tank out and we looked inside and went, oh, oh dear. The fuel goes off. It looks
38:30like
38:31varnish inside. It smells terrible. And the tank looks like it's got a lot of corrosion in it. We just
38:36put
38:37litres and litres of vinegar, gallons of the stuff inside it. So you can put every material you can,
38:42nuts and bolts, screws, bit of chain, whatever you might be, and you just put it inside it and you
38:47slush it about until your arms are aching. You do it the next day and then you leave it a
38:52couple of
38:52days and you look inside it and it starts to look a lot better, a lot cleaner. And you just
38:56do it again
38:56and then eventually you treat it with bicarbonate soda to neutralise the situation with the vinegar.
39:01So the Supra has been keeping the mechanics busy and Malcolm Campbell has enjoyed the chance to work
39:07on the old stuff. You have to use your own brain. You have to use your experience. You look at
39:14the car,
39:14you then make a decision on how you're going to fix that car and that's where the enjoyment comes.
39:19It's not just someone, a computer telling you how to repair it.

40:16Sounds very healthy. Taking the Sunbeam Alpine for a spin through the glorious county
40:22Durham countryside is new owner David Dye. I was actually looking for an Alpine if I could
40:28find one. One day I looked and I saw this one. I put a bid in absolute rock bottom of
40:34the estimate
40:35and nobody else bid for it. It's a lovely car. Really comfortable to drive.
40:45The interior is lovely magnolia leather. The dashboard clocks have all been done in the magnolia faces
40:52and nice walnut dashboard and so on. It's really a nice car. It's quite easy to get in and out
40:59which was
41:00one of the reasons I looked at it in the first place. I thought it would be easier than the
41:04MG.
41:05On the MG I'd have to put one leg in and I'd get hold of my foot and lift it
41:09in by hand with this one.
41:14I can actually get in it and shut the door. I'll lift the bonnet and see what's going on.
41:23I put a new fuel pump on which is down here. It's a bit awkward to get at but once
41:29you've done it a few
41:30times you can do it quite easily. You get the wheel off and you can do it from underneath much
41:34easier
41:34than from the top. But that's old cars. You learn how to do it by doing it basically. You know
41:39if you
41:39you can read the book all day but it doesn't help you to get the bolts undone sometimes.
41:45You're very much a... Tight. Fix it, don't buy it. It's got all my total costs of everything
41:56on. I don't tell you exactly how much I've spent on it. Can I guess later on?

42:14This is where it scores well over the MG. It goes over rough roads very smoothly.
42:23I was in and out the gears really easily. It doesn't clunk.

42:41It's very heavy steering with not having power steering on it. It's all part of the character
42:47of the old cars. Total cost of parts, not counting the hours and hours and hours of labour, 508 pounds
42:58and 68 pence. I can't see it being a problem for a lot of years to come so it'll probably
43:07see me out
43:07as a classic car. It's going to be a good all-round car. I'm really pleased with the buy.
