After a few years of up-and-down performance at the plate, Michael Harris II is finally looking like the elite talent the Braves signed long-term. The Morning Shift discusses how hitting coach Tim Hyers helped Harris find his swing again.
Transcript
00:00Well, we didn't get four home runs out of Michael Harris last night,
00:03but we did get four hits out of him.
00:05It was the Michael Harris show at Fenway.
00:07Braves ended up winning 7-6.
00:09We did have Grant McCauley in yesterday.
00:11He had a conversation with Tim Hires recently about Michael Harris
00:14in his breakout year.
00:15He's an unreal talent.
00:16He really is.
00:18And so it's so fun to work with him and talk to him about hitting.
00:21But, yeah, sometimes that is scary for a hitter
00:24to think about making a slight adjustment.
00:27But, you know, the adjustment he made, you know,
00:29was kind of maybe raising his hands just a little bit higher,
00:31but was something he did when he first started minor league baseball
00:35and hit in high school.
00:36So it wasn't a major adjustment, but it's still scary.
00:38But credit to him, he worked through some difficult times,
00:41and then he's reaped the rewards of that hard work.
00:47I love it.
00:48I love the fact that Tim Hires and Michael Harris got together
00:52and worked on this.
00:52I love the fact that Michael Harris came up too early, honestly,
00:57but they needed him, and he excelled.
01:00And then he struggled from the plate the last few years,
01:03even though his defense has been spot-on phenomenal.
01:07I love to see him putting it all together.
01:09This is a guy that took the Acuna, the Ozzie, the Strider deal financially.
01:18So we're going to have him for a while.
01:20But I am just, I'm really enjoying it.
01:23And it sucks.
01:25It's great because it sucked in the past when you'd see him come up to the plate
01:28and you knew he was struggling.
01:30You just, for me, it was all cringe.
01:34Like, I didn't want to watch him at bat.
01:35I didn't want to see him come up to the plate.
01:36I felt bad for him.
01:38And then you'd see him in the Bronco commercials.
01:39Yeah.
01:40He was just like, get off my screen.
01:41Yeah, I'm like, dude, you need to get a new ride
01:43because the Bronco's not helping you hit.
01:46But now when you see him come up, you enjoy it.
01:49Yeah.
01:50And he should have had two.
01:53He almost had two last night because that double,
01:55that ground road double was really close.
01:57I'm really happy for him because you know he's busting his ass
02:00and Tim Hires is telling you that.
02:02And I remember when Steak and Sandra had Snet on
02:06and the best Braves guest that in this city
02:12is on this radio station between From the Diamond with Grant
02:16and Steak and Sandra with having Walt and AA and Snet.
02:20But they had Snet on.
02:21And this was early in the season, Allie.
02:24And he was like, he talked about Michael Harris.
02:26He goes, that kid, he's figured it out.
02:29He's figured it out.
02:30And he couldn't be more right.
02:32I think Tim Hires deserves a lot of credit.
02:35Grant was on with us when he was on.
02:36You mentioned it when he was on us yesterday.
02:37He made a point to mention that the organization does,
02:42everything as an organization is never just one person.
02:45But I think Tim Hires deserves a lot of credit
02:47because Michael Harris has been his fourth year, I think, in the bigs.
02:52This is the first year where he looks like he's putting it all together.
02:55And he's been working with Tim Hires for a little over a season
02:59and a quarter now.
03:01So I'm really happy for him.
03:02Well, and I love when Tripp gets older.
03:04Michael Harris is going to be like, as soon as you were born,
03:06my back got hot, man.
03:07Yeah, dad's strength is real.
03:09Yeah.
03:09So, and were you guys nervous at all when the score got to 7-6 last night?
03:13Were you thinking, this might not go our way?
03:16I was getting agitated because I was trying to go to sleep.
03:17Yeah.
03:18And I wanted to finish the inning downstairs in my office basement thing.
03:23I was like, dude, just get an out.
03:25Just over with.
03:27Yes, I was like, bro, come on, man.
03:30You had a three-run, or technically two-run cushion here.
03:34I was like, bro, come on, Iggy.
03:35You're Iggy.
03:36You're him, man.
03:37Lock in.
03:37Even after they won, though, and Iggy threw up the two fingers to the sky,
03:40like he always says, get your fingers down.
03:42Like, get off.
03:43He's like, you barely skated by, Iggy.
03:45Put them fingers down, man.
03:47Put those fingers down.
03:47What are you talking about?
03:49Tonight is game two of the series with Boston.
03:51Bryce Elder starts against Connelly early at 645.
03:55Let's go.
03:56Now, the morning shift goes in the huddle.
03:58A look at the latest football news.
04:00Brought to you by Window Nation.
04:01Buy four windows, get four free.
04:03Here's Allie, Mike, and Bo.
04:05The Texans gave wide receiver Nico Collins a raise in his reworked deal.
04:09They're guaranteeing his salary for the next two seasons,
04:12giving him a $9 million cash increase in 26, $8 million in 27.
04:17But Nico has been, I don't want to say a security blanket for, what's his?
04:25CJ Stroud.
04:25CJ, thank you, CJ.
04:26I almost called him Cardell Jones for some reason, for CJ Stroud.
04:30But he's just been really good.
04:31And it's crazy that you're watching a Michigan guy and an Ohio State guy kind of connect.
04:37But Nico has been so good.
04:38He deserves it.
04:39I'm happy for him.
04:40He's a lot bigger receiver than you'd think, though.
04:42He's 6'4", 225.
04:43He doesn't feel like that when you watch him just basically gliding.
04:48But he's a hell of a player.
04:49I'm happy for him.
04:51Got to mention Packers.
04:52Running back Josh Jacobs has turned himself into police.
04:55He was charged with alleged domestic battery, criminal damage to property, disorderly conduct,
05:01strangulation, and intimidation.
05:03Yeah, this is a rough one.
05:04Obviously, after what we've talked about all morning with how these cases sometimes play out,
05:14maybe caution to rush to judgment here.
05:17But the fact that there are some visible damages that have been seen from this,
05:25this looks like a really bad situation.
05:27I hope everyone involved gets the help they need.
05:31And, you know, this isn't something that repeats itself.
05:34But it's going to be interesting, again, to see how this plays out legally
05:40and how the league handles this.
05:41Because based on that report you just read about the charges,
05:49I think if he is found guilty of these, not only is there jail time,
05:53but he might get much more than six games.
05:57So it's awful to hear.
05:59But hopefully it plays out the way it should.
06:02Well, and again, it's the initial report.
06:04We'll keep you updated as we get information on the situation.

06:39We'll talk about that in college baseball, believe it or not, 9 to 11,
06:42on the Steakhouse on Sports Radio, 92.9 The Game.

07:13Still heavy back towards 316.
