00:00I am Pedro Pascal.
00:02And I'm Sigourney Weaver.
00:03I'm Jon Favreau.
00:04I'm Dave Filoni, the president and chief creative officer of Lucasfilm Limited.
00:08And we are going to answer some of the most Googled questions about the Mandalorian and
00:13Grogu.
00:13Let's get right to it, shall we?
00:21What species is Grogu?
00:23Trick question.
00:24Grogu is of the same species that Yoda is, but George Lucas never defined that species.
00:29And so we have not either, correct?
00:32Agree.
00:32Wait a minute.
00:33This is a rapid fire thing.
00:34Everybody slow down.
00:35Why is Grogu still a baby at 50?
00:38Does anybody know this one?
00:39Asked about a lot of friends of mine.
00:40It's a different species.
00:41That's it.
00:42They just age differently.
00:43That's right.
00:44You seem shocked.
00:46I'm not shocked.
00:47It's just pride.
00:48Who trained Grogu as a Jedi?
00:50Luke Skywalker.
00:52I knew that too.
00:54If I wasn't given a chance.
00:58I didn't realize I needed a buzzer.
01:02Answer a question for him.
01:03What is the most dangerous creature in the Mandalorian?
01:06I know.
01:07Yes?
01:08Man.
01:09Oh.
01:10Arguably true.
01:11Arguably true.
01:12Wow.
01:13How do they design Mandalorian armor?
01:15So the original design of the Mandalorian armor was inspired by illustrations done by Joe
01:20Johnston years ago between episode four and episode five when they were coming up with
01:25a new villain that was originally a stormtrooper.
01:29Super commander.
01:30Super commander.
01:31White super commander armor.
01:32Yeah.
01:33And then that later became Boba Fett.
01:34Correct.
01:34And that was explored on the Christmas special.
01:37That's true.
01:38Very good.
01:38And by the way that was what inspired your rifle with the fork at the end that zaps people
01:43because that's something that was used in the Christmas special.
01:45We made a live action version of it season one.
01:47It was a lot of fun.
01:48Why did the Mandalorian save Grogu?
01:50My answer might be different than the right answer but it's definitely instinct.
01:55Well it was imminent because Werner Herzog was about to put him into something.
02:00Well yeah.
02:01And we didn't know what was gonna happen.
02:03So I think it was absolutely instinct.
02:06What weapons does the Mandalorian use?
02:09Like Bond level meets Star Wars gadgetry.
02:14So the pistol I would say is primary.
02:16Yeah.
02:17But so is everything else that's on his body.
02:21Mandal will use anything in the room.
02:23That's right.
02:23Yeah.
02:23And that's what makes him seem like a warrior because you were doing it with a beer bottle
02:28in the film.
02:29He takes out somebody.
02:30So it's grabbing things, using everything as a weapon.
02:33Resourceful.
02:34Very resourceful.
02:35Very resourceful.
02:35And the lasso.
02:36The lariat.
02:37What creatures does Grogu eat?
02:40All of them.
02:41What doesn't he eat?
02:42True.
02:43The scariest, squiggliest ones.
02:46That's true.
02:46Can the Mandalorian use the force?
02:48The Mandalorian cannot use the force.
02:50He doesn't have the training.
02:51He doesn't have the training?
02:52He's probably very...
02:53Can you teach the force to anyone?
02:56Well, the force is the energy field created by all living things.
03:00The force is in everyone, Pedro.
03:01This is true.
03:02Different people have different levels of midichlorian, which allows them easier access at times.
03:06But they cannot learn the force without training and discipline.
03:09Which side is the Mandalorian on?
03:11He's on the good side.
03:13He is now.
03:14Yeah.
03:15Before he would work...
03:16I mean, he was always a Mandalorian.
03:18You gotta work to stay alive.
03:19You gotta get paid.
03:20And so he had jobs.
03:22And his core belief system was always Mandalore.
03:25I think through his human heart that he discovered in his relationship with Grogu, he understood, you know, the good
03:36side.
03:37Why does the Mandalorian hate droids?
03:39In his backstory, we see flashbacks of him, his village being attacked, losing his parents.
03:47And it's...
03:49Superval droids.
03:50Superval droids, yeah.
03:50Superval droids.
03:51During the Clone War.
03:51During the Clone War.
03:52So that visual is what we reinforce as to why.
03:56But...
03:57Trauma.
03:58But as part of what I enjoy about these stories that we're telling is that the character changes through having
04:06empathy and relationships.
04:07And the rebuilt IG droid that was first the one that he actually blew away to help save Grogu ends
04:16up being rebuilt by Quill, a very thoughtful and wise Ugnaught technician.
04:21And he imprints a different set of values into that droid.
04:26And that droid ends up being somebody who saves you at the end of the first season, right?
04:31The time you take your helmet off is looking at IG.
04:34And he says, no living thing could see my face.
04:37And he's like, I'm not a living thing.
04:38And he ends up sacrificing himself for you and the rest of them.
04:42And I think that changes Din Djarin's perspective.
04:44Here's another question for you.
04:45Is Din Djarin a good dad?
04:47That's a matter of opinion.
04:50I think he's such a good dad.
04:52They're going on all these missions together now.
04:55These thrill adventures are side by side.
05:00Which I do find part of the evolution because he wouldn't really let Grogu be in harm's way.
05:05But it's sort of in training process now.
05:07But it's kind of rad because it's sort of like when my dad would take me to R-rated movies.
05:13What is a dark saber in The Mandalorian?
05:16It is a big deal, I'll tell you that much.
05:19Take it away, Mr. Filoni.
05:21As the first person who ever wielded it in Star Wars canon, I was at the Skywalker Ranch.
05:26Dave was up there working on The Clone Wars, which nobody even heard of yet.
05:29And I said, hey, if you ever need somebody to do a voice, I'd love to.
05:32And then I get called to play a Mandalorian.
05:34And that storyline played out quite a bit.
05:37And then eventually, I was using a vibroblade.
05:42Yeah, a different type of weapon.
05:43A different type of weapon.
05:44It was a metal weapon that was fighting against a lightsaber.
05:48Yeah.
05:49And we had recorded everything.
05:50And then I get a phone call saying, yeah, come back in.
05:53George said, you can't have him use a vibroblade because a vibroblade can't fight a lightsaber.
05:59Only a lightsaber can fight a lightsaber.
06:01And so they created the lore around the dark saber, which the Mandalorians got from an ancient Jedi temple.
06:07And it's this cool looking black with a sort of a negative blade with a glow around it.
06:14Who are the children of the Watch?
06:16It's a small sect of Mandalorians that really hold fast to the old ways.
06:22The old rules are very adamant about the dogma of the original creed that we describe as early Mandalorian.
06:29Are the Mandalorian and Jedi enemies?
06:32Well, it depends on the Mandalorian, doesn't it?
06:34I think that's probably the right answer now.
06:36Fair answer.
06:37One of the justifications of Mandalorian armor is that it is perfectly equipped to counteract the skills and abilities of
06:46the Jedi.
06:46So they were at war at times, right?
06:48Combatants at times, yeah.
06:50Can the Mandalorian beat Darth Vader?
06:53Yes.
06:54You think so?
06:55Without question.
06:56Okay, interesting.
06:57Darth Vader's now old and he can jump.
07:00Well, it does depend when.
07:05I can't tell you how many times I've done this and I have to wait a while.
07:11When does the Mandalorian take off his helmet?
07:13Well, one, it depends on the Mandalorian.
07:17There are so many different levels of belief systems.
07:20And this Mandalorian, in very, very interesting stages, I would say one, to survive.
07:29Second, to say goodbye.
07:32Ooh, romantic.
07:35Yes.
07:36Third.
07:38Sigourney, would you like to tell everyone?
07:40No.
07:41No.
07:41Just kidding.
07:42Don't tell.
07:44Oh, you mean, oh, I can't tell you because it's in our movie.
07:48Who was the only Mandalorian Jedi?
07:50I'm not sure if I agree with the premise of the question.
07:54Well, I think they're speaking perhaps historically and not presently.
07:58Tar Vizsla.
07:58Tar Vizsla would be the one that was first inducted.
08:00He was the first Mandalorian that received Jedi training.
08:03What is the Mandalorian creed?
08:05Four words.
08:06This is the way.
08:08Right.
08:09But that's after you list all the things in the creed.
08:11Then you say this is the way.
08:13Well, we keep adding things because he says the old protect the young and the young protect
08:16the old.
08:17This is true.
08:17This is the way.
08:18So we've added that to the creed, right?
08:19You never take your helmet off.
08:20That's part of the creed.
08:22What's the play?
08:23I didn't sign up for this.
08:25That's in the Pedro Pascal compendium.
08:28Where did Grovu come from?
08:30First of all, the idea of some character of that species of that age who, because Yoda was
08:36such a teacher and to have one that's a student, because you always think of Yoda as old and
08:41wise, but to have a young one was just a compelling thing.
08:45And remember, as we're doing for television, it's like, what's a cool dynamic that has a
08:49lot of room to explore?
08:50Because you're going to tell stories over many, many chapters, unlike a film where you
08:53want to lay the whole thing out at first.
08:56Here we wanted to see what offered a certain amount of dramatic opportunity.
09:01And then the lone wolf and cub dynamic between those two characters felt like we could really do
09:06something special.
09:07Will Grogu ever speak?
09:09I heard something interesting saying, I look forward to Grogu's first word as it will
09:12immediately follow his second word.
09:16Very good.
09:17How was the Razorcrest destroyed?
09:19It got blown to bits right in front of me.
09:22It was horrific.
09:24And also very confusing as to why we have another one now.
09:26Why is Beskar important to Mandalorians?
09:31Not from a character's point of view.
09:33It is our skin and it is our currency, our value.
09:39It is Mandalorian steel.
09:41Yeah.
09:41And it has certain qualities in its purest form.
09:44It can deflect lightsabers.
09:45How much of the show is practical versus CGI?
09:49My short version is a lot more than you think.
09:51And a lot more than I get to be around physically.
09:54And I was always mostly impressed by the practical settings and practical effects that are a part
10:01of shooting.
10:02There was always a mixture.
10:04Even when we're using the volume, we would have sometimes a digital layer built in game
10:08engine in the background that move.
10:10Then you'd have a practical layer that we'd build.
10:12Sometimes we would scan a practical layer to put in there.
10:14But in the film, we had the time and we had a studio lot and sound stages to build sets
10:22of the scale that
10:23I grew up with, like Dagobah or the pit or the arena where we fight.
10:28Those were all practical sets that we built.
10:30We went on practical occasions as well.
10:32But there's usually digital elements worked into it.
10:35But when we use digital, it's because it's something we could achieve no other way.
10:39Well, that's all the questions.
10:40I think we couldn't have done better.
10:44We'll see you next time.
10:45We'll see you next time.
