00:00Legalizing marijuana has had a major impact in tobacco consumption.
00:04Despite what many experts thought, a new study published in the Journal of Health Economics
00:09concluded that state-level cannabis reforms are mostly associated with small,
00:14occasionally significant longer-run declines in adult tobacco use.
00:18The study also found consistent evidence that the legalization of marijuana
00:23drove consumption up in adults of between 2 to 4 percentage points.
00:28But tobacco didn't follow that trend.
00:30Researchers said that if the trend was somewhat consistent at a national level,
00:35it could result in health care cost savings worth more than $10 billion per year.
