A newly appointed principal (played by Morgan Freeman) arrives at a highly chaotic inner-city high school and immediately implements strict disciplinary action to restore order. On his first day, he publicly announces the expulsion of 300 students identified as disruptive to the learning environment.

What initially appears to be a bluff quickly turns into reality as security personnel begin escorting students out of the auditorium. The remaining students are left in shock as the principal reinforces a strict message about responsibility, discipline, and personal accountability for one’s future.

Following this decision, the school community reacts with strong backlash. Parents confront the administration, accusing the principal of denying students their right to education. However, the principal defends his actions, arguing that maintaining a productive learning environment requires removing consistent sources of disruption and also emphasizes the role of parents in shaping student behavior.

Despite the controversy, he continues restructuring the school’s culture through strict enforcement, active student engagement, and constant monitoring. He personally patrols the school with a megaphone, learns student identities, and builds direct communication with the student body while maintaining a highly disciplined environment.

His approach also leads to conflict with staff members. He fires the music teacher after a disagreement over student standards and begins confronting other faculty members who fail to meet expectations.

The scene is from Lean on Me (1989), based on the real-life story of Joe Clark, a principal known for his uncompromising methods to reform a struggling school.

00:00On his very first day as principal, he expelled 300 students on the spot.
00:03At first, the kids didn't buy it but the next second, security was hauling them out the door.
00:08The students still in the auditorium suddenly fell dead silent,
00:11because they realized that if they kept acting up, they could be next.
00:14And that was exactly the first lesson the principal wanted to teach them.
00:17He told every student that if they failed the next exam,
00:19they'd have no choice but to watch helplessly as others got into top universities.
00:23The one giving up on you isn't anyone else it's yourself.
00:25You came to this school for one reason and one reason only,
00:28to keep learning and chase your dreams.
00:29When he finished speaking, the students felt like they'd just woken up from a deep sleep.
00:33But expelling those students didn't sit well with a lot of parents.
00:35The very next day, the parents of those troublemakers showed up at the school demanding answers.
00:40They blasted the principal for stripping their kids of the right to an education,
00:43but he stayed cool as a cucumber.
00:45He knew that the only way to turn the learning environment around was to clear out the bad apples.
00:48He also called the parents out for bringing kids into the world without actually raising them
00:52letting them go down the wrong path.
00:53Whatever was happening now, they had brought on themselves.
00:56With that, the principal walked out with his head held high, ignoring all the cursing behind him.
01:00In the days that followed, Principal Clark was like a machine that never ran out of batteries.
01:04He patrolled the halls nonstop with a megaphone in hand.
01:07He memorized every student's name and personality, and quickly became one of them.
01:11But while the students loved him, not a single teacher was on his side.
01:14One day, he noticed the kids didn't even know the school song, so he went to talk to the music
01:18teacher.
01:19She thought she was hot stuff because she'd graduated from a top school, and she completely blew him off.
01:23The next second, she was fired on the spot.
01:26Then he went after the gym teacher, who had been calling in sick for half the month.
