06:06There is a sense of knowing and acceptance.
06:18You who have a family
06:21This is the most realistic viewpoint I would like to ask...
06:23From, of course, one million baht was obtained.
06:24The place where the king's foundation is extinguished.
06:28The answer is that it's a matter of investigation.
06:30We need 1500 [units/units of currency/information].
06:34The response received is equal to the response given.
06:36of generations of Americans who stepped forward,
06:39and a couple days before that,
06:41he wants to provide compensation,
06:43and we shouldn't even call it compensation,
06:44a payout for people who violently attacked the government.
06:47Domestic terrorists,
06:48who showed the opposite of honor, integrity, and courage.
06:52It's despicable.
06:53It's overwhelmingly unpopular.
06:55It's about time Republicans stepped up and drew a line,
06:58and hopefully that'll give them momentum
06:59on things like Iran and Cuba.
07:01But I also think there's another part of this.
07:02The more desperate he becomes,
07:05the more dangerous he becomes.
07:06I don't think this is accidental.
07:08I think this is strategic.
07:09I think he wants to incentivise people to stand up and oppose the government,
07:13to attack the government sites, the elections.
07:17It would be a great focal point coming up in just a couple of weeks.
07:20And I've called it Plan C.
07:21Plan A, if he wants to disrupt the elections, is the military.
07:24And they're likely to say no.
07:25Plan B would be ICE.
07:27Well, we don't know where that's going to go.
07:28This is Plan C.
07:29This is the backup plan.
07:30This is a green light to every insurrectionist
07:32and everyone who wants to stand with Trump
07:34and against the evil forces that he conspires
07:36this gives them a green light to do bad things
07:39and know that you will be pardoned
07:40and you will even get paid for it
07:42so I think we have to be really mindful of the fact
07:44that he knows that the midterms are a circuit breaker
07:47he knows they will hold him accountable
07:48and things like this are not accidental
07:50They're quite intentional.
07:51even if they fail
07:52the signal he's sending with it is very important
07:54well let me just press you on that
07:56because people have said this for a couple days
07:58and I just want to put out some reporting from NPR
08:02because they have heard this
08:04right
08:04so the convicted insurrectionist
08:08who was pardoned
08:09and then went on to molest children
08:11and also be charged and convicted.
08:13and sentenced to life in prison
08:15told his child victim of molestation
08:18to keep quiet about being molested
08:20because he was coming into a lot of money
08:22Restitution from Donald Trump
08:24for January 6th
08:25and so I guess instead of debating
08:28whether or not that is the plan
08:31that is what the insurrectionists have heard
08:33right
08:34I mean, it's okay.
08:36the president wants you on his side
08:38the president considers you a victim
08:41And it kind of reminds me of
08:43I don't know maybe like when Saddam Hussein
08:45Let everybody out of prison.
08:46because they would disrupt things
08:47right before he knew the Americans
08:48were going to attack
08:49And this is what you do.
08:50you pick the worst of the worst
08:52the people who are the most desperate
08:53the people who are most despised
08:54and you give them a green light
08:56to do bad things
08:56and he's been doing that
08:57throughout every time he's been in office
08:59since 11 years ago
09:00when he came down that escalator
09:01and I think it's really really important
09:03that we think strategically
09:04about how to combat that
09:06Not just dismiss it as a whim.
09:08of something that Trump does
09:09and also recognize
09:10Republicans have actually
09:11stopped him on something
09:12that's really really important
09:13they haven't stopped him on Iran
09:14they didn't stop him on Venezuela
09:15and now
09:16It's so lame
09:17that the bar is so low
09:19But now we need them.
09:19to potentially stop him on Cuba
09:21because it is Memorial Day weekend
09:23and they want to make more veterans
09:25they want to put more people in Arlington
09:27and they're already focused on Cuba
09:29there's an aircraft carrier down there
09:30they're sending all the messaging
09:31and they didn't stop him on Iran
09:33they didn't stop him on Venezuela
09:34and hopefully they can have
09:35A war powers vote on Cuba.
09:36before he actually hits Cuba
09:38That would be nice.
09:40I want to bring Michael Feinberg
09:42in on Todd Blanche's performance
09:44in cleanup
09:45if Pam Bondi was fired in part
09:48for not turning around
09:49Acknowledging the January 6th
09:51or the Epstein survivors
09:52It will be interesting.
09:54to see what happens to Todd Blanche
09:55who defended the fund
09:57by saying lots of people
09:58Get money for beating up cops.
10:00I'll give you two minutes
10:01to think about that one
10:03Michael Feinberg
10:03We will all be right back.
10:13Michael, I had to
10:14Read this two times.
10:15and then watch it
10:16because I had to see it
10:17with my own eyes
10:18but when CNN asked Todd Blanche
10:21the country's acting attorney general
10:23whether he would support individuals
10:24Who hurt police officers?
10:26receiving taxpayer dollars
10:28He said this.
10:29quote
10:30people that hurt police
10:32Get money all the time
10:33end quote
10:38It's a window into how
10:42spun into the web
10:44of immorality and revenge
10:47Todd Blanche is
10:48atop DOJ
10:49and when we cover the tension
10:52between the department
10:54and what it has always been
10:55and what it is now
10:56We should always remember
10:58this is someone willing to say
10:59quote
11:00people who hurt cops
11:01Get money all the time
11:02There is no more
11:03Pretense of morality
11:05There is no more pretense.
11:07that department
11:07is on the side of justice
11:08There is no pretense.
11:10that it is there
11:11to do anything
11:12anything
11:14other than
11:15You know
11:16bandage up
11:17the hurt
11:19boo-boo
11:19feelings
11:20of Donald Trump
11:21Over losing in 2020
11:25Yeah, there was another one.
11:26moment at the hearing
11:27that I think
11:27was actually
11:28the real linchpin
11:29That explains all of this.
11:31and I'm going to take
11:32a slightly circuitous
11:33Way to get there
11:34um
11:35but
11:36You know
11:37earlier this week
11:38Mel Brooks announced
11:39that he was
11:40giving away
11:41all of his scripts
11:42ephemera
11:43Sketch ideas
11:45to a comedy archive
11:48and
11:48You know
11:49He's functionally
11:50stepping away
11:51after his next movie
11:53as near as we can tell
11:54and a lot of us
11:55who love film
11:56Wonder will we ever
11:58laugh as hard again
11:59as we did at the
12:00producers
12:00or maybe
12:02Young Frankenstein
12:03um
12:04and I was dissuaged
12:06of that concern
12:07when Todd Blanche
12:08with a straight face
12:09He said he was there.
12:10at the Senate
12:11as the acting
12:12Attorney General
12:13not Donald Trump's
12:14personal attorney
12:15so
12:16the fact
12:18that he
12:19was willing
12:21the fact that he
12:22had to articulate
12:23that
12:23even though
12:24everybody knows
12:25It's not true.
12:26It really goes to show.
12:28how obscene
12:29and obnoxious
12:30his statement
12:32about
12:33police
12:34people getting
12:35money
12:35who
12:36Beat Up Cops
12:37all the time
12:38really was
12:39This is a party.
12:41that
12:42for my whole time
12:43when I was a supporter
12:45of it
12:45and I imagine
12:46This is true for you.
12:46as well as Nicole
12:48I tried it myself.
12:49on being the party
12:51of law and order
12:52on being the party
12:54that backed
12:54the blue
12:55on being the party
12:57whose supporters
13:00had bumper stickers
13:01of the thin blue line
13:03across the American flag
13:04and we have gotten
13:06To a point now
13:08where because
13:09Donald Trump
13:10Needs to rewrite.
13:11history
13:12to escape
13:13his culpability
13:14for the first
13:15real insurrection
13:16to try and stop
13:18the peaceful
13:18transfer of power
13:19We have an attorney.
13:21general
13:22a sycophant
13:24with a suite
13:24in the RFK building
13:26who is saying
13:27Not only is it okay.
13:29to assault
13:29federal police officers
13:31who are protecting
13:33our democratic process
13:35But it's okay.
13:36to give them
13:37a payout
13:38for their troubles
13:39as well
13:41I opened this
13:42with a joke
13:43About Mel Brooks
13:44But let's be clear.
13:45This is morally
13:46despicable
13:47these people
13:49have a black hole
13:50where their ethical
13:51The compass should be
13:52Both as individuals
13:55and as stewards
13:56of the American nation
13:58that this is even
13:59being discussed
14:00would have our founders
14:01rolling in their graves
14:03Yeah, and Ben.
14:04I guess what makes
14:05this news cycle
14:06different from
14:07everyone over the last
14:08nine years
14:08is that it's
14:09Republicans saying that
14:10not me
14:13Yeah, I think.
14:14You know
14:14I think it is striking
14:15and I think
14:15You know
14:16This isn't the only
14:17instance in which
14:18you're seeing
14:18some pushback
14:19as well
14:19I mean there's
14:20pushback about
14:21You know
14:22the situation
14:22with Iran
14:23as well
14:24I think there's
14:25You know
14:26As I said before.
14:26I think there's
14:27a political landscape
14:27but also
14:28You know
14:29to think about
14:30this IRS slush fund
14:31remember
14:32What happened here?
14:33Did you know?
14:33Trump and his sons
14:35Dismissed the lawsuit.
14:36and struck this deal
14:38and there was
14:40You know
14:40an end around
14:41to some extent
14:41of the judicial process
14:43that was playing out
14:44a judge that
14:45might not have
14:46signed off
14:46on such a deal
14:47I spoke with the lawyer
14:48that was cited
14:50as having negotiated
14:51the settlement
14:52That was the precedent.
14:53that Todd Blanche
14:54cited in this case
14:56and you know
14:56at every point
14:57in that process
14:58They had a judge.
14:59who signed off on it
14:59and I think that deal
15:01was made with the IRS
15:02with the assumption
15:03that Congress
15:04would not step up
15:05and would not oppose it
15:06because in so many
15:07other instances
15:08in these first
15:08two years
15:09of the Trump presidency
15:10They just have not
15:11and so I think
15:12This is a really
15:12remarkable
15:13striking moment
15:14and you know
15:15I wonder if we'll
15:16Continue to see this
15:16I mean, we're already
15:17Seeing other signs of it.
15:18Those Americans
15:19Prepare to take
15:20a little Memorial Day
15:22Weekend break
15:23Donald Trump's economy
15:24is making it
15:25more and more difficult
15:26to afford
15:27to travel
15:28and enjoy that break
15:35Gas is going
15:36You know
15:37I had gasoline
15:37down to $1.85
15:39cents in Iowa
15:40I was in Iowa
15:41and the stations
15:43I had it at $1.85.
15:46but I was down
15:47to in many cases
15:48less than $2
15:49a barrel
15:50a gallon
15:51and then I said
15:52to myself
15:53This is great.
15:54We just hit a new
15:55high in the stock
15:56market
15:56Everything's going
15:57good
15:57I'm sorry
15:58But we have to
15:59Go down
15:59and take a little
16:00Journey Down
16:01to
16:01We have to do it.
16:03something
16:03with rent
16:04We cannot let
16:05them have
16:06a nuclear weapon
16:07you want to see
16:08The world exploded
16:09you want to see
16:10a problem
16:10and this is
16:12peanuts
16:12and I appreciate
16:13everybody putting
16:14up with it
16:14for a little while
16:15It won't be
16:16much longer
16:17you could not
16:19Make that up
16:19calling the price
16:21of gas
16:21quote peanuts
16:22while he's
16:23standing in front
16:24of the construction
16:24site for his
16:25New gold ballroom
16:27That was Donald.
16:28Trump mid
16:29I don't know
16:31what you want
16:31to call it
16:32vibing
16:33at a press
16:34Gaggle this week
16:35touting his
16:35Golden Ballroom
16:36behind him
16:37and calling it
16:38peanuts
16:39for the family
16:40or man or woman
16:41whose net worth
16:42has increased
16:43by more than
16:44four billion dollars
16:44in two years
16:45on Trump's part
16:46but for everybody
16:47else
16:48Donald Trump's
16:49economy is
16:50by and large
16:51crushing the
16:52American family
16:53and that pain
16:54is showing up
16:55nearly everywhere
16:5683% of Americans
16:58Say the economy
16:59Is it fair or poor?
17:00only 16% of Americans
17:02Say it's good
17:03or excellent
17:04Despite Donald
17:05Trump's unfounded
17:06claims
17:07that things won't
17:08be like this
17:09much longer
17:10voters don't

18:13substack
18:14Ron and Son
18:14is back with us
18:15Also joining us
18:16co-host of
18:17the weeknight
18:18former RNC
18:19Michael chair
18:19Steele is here
18:20Michael Steele
18:21I start with you
18:22because I feel
18:23like this story
18:25should have been
18:26the thing
18:26Maybe not
18:28the slush fund
18:29for violent
18:29insurrectionists
18:30in the war
18:31with Iran
18:31that made
18:32Republicans
18:32jump off
18:33the Trump train
18:34Why didn't
18:35it
18:37You know
18:37I think
18:38because
18:38at the end
18:39of the day
18:39they had
18:41Sort of
18:41encased
18:42themselves
18:42in the
18:43rationale
18:44of Donald
18:44Trump
18:45relative
18:45to the war
18:46I think
18:47that a lot
18:47of Republicans
18:48know
18:49deep down
18:50and it's
18:50You know
18:51It's clearly
18:51They're going
18:52to get a lot
18:52of it
18:53when they
18:53Get home
18:54for the
18:55holiday
18:56but deep
18:57down
18:57They know
18:58that this
18:58is not
18:59a staple
19:00for Americans
19:01to have gas
19:02prices this high
19:03going into
19:04the Labor
19:04Day weekend
19:05we saw
19:06and they
19:06saw
19:07how Americans
19:08and actually
19:08the Republicans
19:09took advantage
19:10of how
19:11Americans
19:11freaked out
19:12at the price
19:12of eggs
19:13in the last
19:14year of
19:14Joe Biden's
19:15administration
19:16so now
19:17we're not
19:17just talking
19:18about eggs
19:18baby boy
19:19we're talking
19:19about
19:20You know
19:20beef
19:21which is up
19:2217-18%
19:23we're talking
19:24about tomatoes
19:25as you noted
19:26we're talking
19:27about the
19:28staples
19:28that go
19:29to a good
19:30family barbecue
19:31Let alone
19:32what it's
19:32doing to
19:33the price
19:33of extra
19:34fun like
19:35beer
19:35and other
19:36adult
19:37beverages
19:38so the
19:39whole mixture
19:40for a lot
19:40of Republicans
19:41now is
19:42coming home
19:43how they
19:44respond to
19:44It is going
19:45to be
19:45interesting
19:45when they
19:46come back
19:46because when
19:47they come
19:47back
19:47Nicole
19:48You're going
19:49to have
19:49to deal
19:50with paying
19:50for all
19:51the crap
19:52that Donald
19:52Trump has
19:53put the
19:53table for
19:54them
19:54Starting with
19:55the ball
19:55ballroom
19:57going to
19:58the slushiest
19:59of slush
20:00funds
20:00folks
20:01if you
20:01ever
20:01want to
20:02just think
20:02about
20:03what you
20:03would
20:03say
20:04if your
20:05boss
20:05came to
20:06you
20:06and said
20:06You know
20:07what
20:07I'm going
20:08to take
20:09this amount
20:10out of your
20:10paycheck
20:11every week
20:12and I'm
20:12going to
20:13put it
20:13into a
20:13special
20:14account
20:14for me
20:14and my
20:15family
20:16and when
20:16we want
20:17to go
20:17on vacation
20:18and when
20:18we want
20:18to buy
20:19crypto
20:19and we
20:20just want
20:20to sit
20:21back
20:21and have
20:21a really
20:22really
20:22expensive
20:23cigar
20:23you're
20:24going to
20:24pay for
20:25it out
20:25of your
20:25paycheck
20:26every two
20:26weeks
20:27that's
20:27essentially
20:28what
20:28Donald
20:28Trump
20:29has done
20:29and that's
20:30what
20:30Republicans
20:31are going
20:31to have
20:31to vote
20:32on
20:32when they
20:33come back
20:33after this
20:34break
20:34So going
20:35into it
20:35they're getting
20:36hit with
20:36high prices
20:37hopefully
20:38they get
20:38an earful
20:39from voters
20:40and when
20:40they come
20:40back
20:40They're going
20:41to have
20:41to decide
20:41whether or
20:42not
20:42They're going
20:42to continue
20:43to spend
20:43upwards
20:43of trillions
20:44of dollars
20:45that the
20:45American
20:45people
20:46cannot afford
20:47I mean
20:48I love
20:48that analogy
20:49of taking
20:50money out
20:50of your
20:51paycheck
20:51to pay
20:51me
20:52and my
20:53sons
20:54and my
20:55companies
20:55but there's
20:56another group
20:57getting paid
20:57and it's
20:58the bank
20:59robbers
20:59who tied
21:00up the
21:00people
21:00at the
21:01ATM
21:03and beat
21:04them
21:04except the
21:04people at
21:05the ATM
21:05were cops
21:05I mean
21:06It's so
21:07insane
21:09that it's
21:09even news
21:10that Republicans
21:11were like
21:11I don't think
21:12so you can't
21:13have a slush
21:13Fund to pay
21:14yourself
21:14your sons
21:15and the
21:16criminals
21:16who beat
21:17up cops
21:17and made
21:18us run
21:18for our
21:18lives
21:19Josh Hawley
21:20I'm looking
21:20at you
21:22Why do
21:23you think
21:24do you
21:25think the
21:25politics
21:26and Trump's
21:26profound
21:27weakness
21:28made it
21:29possible
21:29Or do you?
21:29think the
21:30slush
21:30fund is
21:30just this
21:31thing
21:31more than
21:32the Comey
21:33prosecution
21:33or the
21:34Tish James
21:34prosecution
21:35I mean
21:35do you
21:35just think
21:36It's this
21:36thing
21:37that is
21:38so appalling
21:39and stupid
21:40You know
21:40That's a good
21:41question
21:42Nicole
21:42I think
21:43It's one
21:44of those
21:44things that
21:44when you're
21:45looking at
21:45the scale
21:46of stuff
21:47that the
21:47American people
21:48have absorbed
21:49and where
21:50they have
21:50made excuses
21:51for Donald
21:51Trump
21:52and if
21:52We're all
21:53honest with
21:53ourselves
21:54out there
21:55You know
21:55you've made
21:56a lot of
21:56excuses
21:57for Donald
21:57Trump
21:58You know
21:59you dipped
22:00your toe
22:00in the MAGA
22:01world a little
22:01bit
22:02and you
22:03played
22:03You know
22:05kind of
22:05like
22:06catch me
22:06if you
22:07can
22:07with it
22:07all
22:08but after
22:08a while
22:09it all
22:09starts to
22:10weigh you
22:10down
22:10because it's
22:12not just
22:12the one
22:13thing
22:13It's the
22:13accumulation
22:14and I
22:14think
22:15when you
22:15get to
22:15this point
22:16it is
22:17the accumulation
22:17of things
22:18that really
22:19come home
22:20to hit
22:21and what
22:21really
22:21again
22:22we come
22:22back to
22:23it
22:23I think
22:23the tipping
22:24point
22:24that began
22:25this slide
22:26to where
22:26we are
22:26for Trump
22:27is the
22:28Epstein files
22:29They're at
22:30the end
22:30of the day
22:30regardless
22:31of how
22:31you slice
22:32it dice
22:33it
22:33economy
22:34all the
22:34there's
22:34something
22:35about that
22:36there's
22:36something
22:37about that
22:37that sits
22:38with the
22:38American
22:39people
22:39in a spot
22:40in their
22:40stomach
22:40that they
22:41just
22:41can't
22:42They can't
22:43deal with
22:43and so
22:44you compound
22:45it more
22:45and more
22:46with all
22:46these other
22:46things
22:47and you
22:47watch the
22:48poll numbers
22:49Go down
22:49and you
22:50can peg
22:50It to that
22:51moment
22:51at the
22:52beginning
22:52of his
22:53second term
22:54when this
22:55became the
22:55conversation
22:56not the
22:57economy
22:58oddly enough
22:58not a lot
22:59of the
22:59other things
23:00not the
23:00ballroom
23:01not a
23:01whole bunch
23:01of other
23:02stuff
23:02but this
23:03kind of
23:04sat with
23:04people in
23:05a way
23:05that weighed
23:06them down
23:07and I think
23:07they started
23:08thinking about
23:09their own
23:09daughters
23:09they started
23:10thinking about
23:10their moms
23:11they started
23:12thinking about
23:12the women
23:12in their
23:13lives
23:13and how
23:14the system
23:15was treating
23:15how these
23:16very rich
23:16men
23:17treated
23:18them
23:18and that
23:19stuck in
23:20their craw
23:20in a way
23:21that nothing
23:21else seems
23:22to have
23:22and now
23:23the pylon
23:24begins
23:25It's sitting.
23:25on top
23:26of all
23:26of that
23:26and folks
23:27have just
23:27got to the
23:28Point where
23:28they've had
23:29enough
23:29and the
23:29Democrats
23:30I think
23:32helped
23:32Frame it
23:33with their
23:34affordability
23:35narrative
23:36as a sort
23:37of a side
23:38conversation
23:40and those
23:40two things
23:41coming together
23:42the way
23:42they have
23:43have brought
23:43us to where
23:44we are
23:44right now
23:44I think
23:45yeah
23:46I mean
23:46Ron
23:46It's a good
23:47jumping off
23:47point
23:48because I
23:48do think
23:49it is
23:49Sort of
23:50the triple
23:50double cross
23:51right
23:52so the
23:53base
23:53got double
23:54crossed
23:54on the
23:55Epstein
23:55files
23:56and the
23:56Epstein
23:57class
23:57was
23:58perceived
23:58to have
23:59been
23:59protected
24:00while
24:00the
24:01victims
24:02many of
24:02whom
24:02went to
24:03Capitol Hill
24:03on the
24:04September
24:05in the
24:06Monday
24:06after Labor
24:07Day
24:07and said
24:08Hey I
24:08voted for
24:09Trump
24:09and Parks
24:09I thought
24:10that we
24:10would finally
24:10Get justice
24:11I mean
24:12the Epstein
24:13betrayal
24:14didn't have
24:14a partisan
24:15divide
24:15it had
24:15this
24:16class
24:16divide
24:18the war
24:19You know
24:20no war
24:21in the
24:21Middle East
24:22was what
24:22catapulted
24:23Donald Trump
24:23to be the
24:24Republican
24:24nominee
24:25in 2015
24:26and 16
24:26It's
24:27how he
24:27knocked
24:28Marco
24:28Rubio
24:28and Chris
24:29Christie
24:29and all
24:30the other
24:30traditional
24:31Republicans
24:32out of
24:33the
24:33primary
24:33and so
24:34his entire
24:34appeal
24:35to Republican
24:36primary voters
24:37for 10
24:38years
24:38was that
24:39promise
24:39of no
24:40more wars
24:41in the
24:41Middle East
24:42and then
24:43this economic
24:43destruction
24:44that he
24:45seems to be
24:45opting into
24:46while he
24:47is lining
24:48his pockets
24:49with taxpayer
24:50dollars
24:51literally building
24:52a 1.7
24:53billion dollar
24:53fund for his
24:54political cronies
24:55and people
24:56who carried
24:56out violence
24:57and building
24:58a gold
24:58ballroom
24:59with taxpayer
24:59dollars
25:00I mean
25:00it just
25:01feels like
25:01a triple
25:02whammy
25:03of stupid
25:04chaos
25:05and things
25:06that voters
25:07are really
25:07mad about
25:08yeah
25:09and I think
25:09Nicole
25:10and I
25:10It's probably
25:11for me to
25:12I disagree with
25:12the man of
25:13steel
25:13but I
25:13would say
25:14that the
25:14underlying
25:15all this
25:15are these
25:17is this
25:18unease
25:18around the
25:19economy
25:20it ran
25:20through the
25:21end of the
25:21Biden
25:21administration
25:22and you
25:22could argue
25:23that the
25:23Biden
25:23economy
25:24was
25:24considerably
25:25stronger
25:25than the
25:26economy
25:26we see
25:26today
25:27albeit
25:27with
25:28inflation
25:28coming
25:29down
25:29in the
25:30post-pandemic
25:30world
25:31and it
25:31was still
25:31too high
25:32ironically
25:32the price
25:33of eggs
25:34is the
25:34one thing
25:34that's
25:34actually
25:35fallen
25:35here
25:36in the
25:36last
25:37many
25:37months
25:37because
25:37bird
25:38flu
25:38is
25:38over
25:38and so
25:39we
25:39have
25:39more
25:39chickens
25:39more
25:40eggs
25:40lower
25:41prices
25:41but
25:41when
25:42you
25:42look
25:42at
25:42today's
25:43consumer
25:43sentiment
25:43numbers
25:44from the
25:44University
25:44of
25:45Michigan
25:45they
25:46are
25:46at
25:46the
25:46lowest
25:46level
25:47on
25:47record
25:47going
25:48back
25:48to 1952
25:49inflation
25:50expectations
25:51among
25:51consumers
25:52are going
25:53up
25:53looking out
25:54one year
25:54three years
25:55and five
25:55years
25:55and as a
25:56consequence
25:57You know
25:57This is
25:58the bedrock
25:58issue
25:59on which
25:59all this
26:00other stuff
26:00is really
26:01just
26:01You know
26:01one
26:02two
26:02three
26:02more
26:03nails
26:03in the
26:03coffin
26:04if you
26:04will

33:06Linus and Lucy
33:07anyone
33:08illegally using
33:09that music
33:09is going to have
33:10to pay
33:10through the nose
33:12Lewis
33:12Oh no
33:13I hope this
33:14doesn't cost
33:14CBS any money
33:18I want to bring
33:20in the New York Times
33:20media correspondent
33:21Michael Grimbom
33:22Also joining us
33:23executive editor
33:24of Deadline.com
33:25Dominic Patton
33:26Dominic, I want to
33:27Start with you
33:28I mean, we've talked.
33:29I feel like
33:30for 16 months
33:31about this thing
33:32That's really hard.
33:34to measure
33:35and that is
33:36brand damage
33:37in terms of
33:38brand damage
33:39and devastation
33:40could CBS
33:41and Paramount
33:41have been more
33:42dilapidated
33:43from a brand image
33:44than this messy
33:46breakup with
33:47Stephen Colbert
33:48Oh, I don't think.
33:49So Nicole
33:50I think a lot.
33:50of ways
33:51There were two
33:51fatal flaws
33:52here for them
33:53one
33:53they think
33:54He slipped him
33:55which was a
33:55fatal flaw
33:56because regardless
33:56of any story
33:57about money
33:58or whatever
33:58and I will
33:59mention this
33:59because I think
34:00It's important.
34:00it wasn't
34:01Actually the
34:01Ellison regime
34:02that fired him
34:03It was the
34:03previous Sherry
34:04Redstone one
34:04as they were
34:05about to be
34:06Sold to the
34:07Ellison
34:07so sweetening
34:08the pot
34:08but I think
34:09part of that
34:09was they
34:10You know
34:10look
34:12Trump complained
34:12about him
34:13and he was
34:13gone days later
34:14so you can't
34:15Say there's
34:15there's not
34:15a cause and
34:16effect
34:16because this
34:17is the thing
34:18You can't
34:19tell people
34:19what they're
34:19Seeing isn't
34:20real
34:20the other
34:21thing though
34:22too is
34:22I think
34:23in this
34:23is there
34:24was a
34:24lack of
34:24grace
34:24about the
34:25way it
34:25was handled
34:26There should
34:26have been
34:27a big
34:27network
34:28send off
34:28a big
34:29Thanks
34:29You did
34:30great
34:30we love
34:31you
34:31etc
34:31etc
34:31happy
34:32trails
34:33but this
34:33was all
34:34done like
34:34Can you
34:35please
34:35leave
34:35like you're
34:36the annoying
34:36cousin
34:37who we
34:37can't
34:38get rid
34:38of
34:38and so
34:39to that
34:39They opened
34:40themselves up
34:41to this
34:41and I think
34:42very much
34:43so
34:43You know
34:43what you
34:44saw here
34:44there wasn't
34:45a lot of
34:45mention
34:45about CBS
34:46there wasn't
34:47a lot of
34:47mention
34:47about Donald
34:48Trump
34:48though
34:48petulantly
34:49He talked
34:49about
34:50Thank goodness
34:50He's finally
34:51gone
34:51about Colbert
34:52and said
34:53Rest in peace.
34:53to all the
34:54other late
34:54night hosts
34:55which is
34:55just
34:55kind of
34:56dumb
34:56and creepy
34:57but like
34:57that's
34:57Trump's
34:58brand
34:58right
34:58So what?
34:58do you
34:58do
34:59but I
34:59think
34:59that
35:00insofar
35:01is that
35:01when
35:01You know
35:02Stephen Colbert
35:03comes out
35:04the better
35:04for this
35:04right
35:05You know
35:05He won
35:06an Emmy
35:06because of
35:07this
35:07now next
35:07year
35:08this year
35:09look
35:09clearly
35:10Jimmy Kimmel
35:10is going
35:10to win
35:11the Emmy
35:11because he
35:11got pulled
35:12off the air
35:12due to
35:13Trump
35:13administration
35:14hijinks
35:14but I
35:15think
35:15in that
35:15so far
35:16the dynamic
35:17is in
35:17their favor
35:18and let's
35:18Be honest
35:19I don't
35:20know
35:20besides
35:21You know
35:21I mean
35:22honestly
35:22how many
35:23corporate
35:23executives
35:24Can you
35:24name
35:25out of
35:25the top
35:26of your
35:26head
35:27but we
35:27all know
35:28Jack
35:28Parr
35:28we all
35:28know
35:28Johnny
35:29Carson
35:29we all
35:29know
35:29Dick Cavill
35:30we all
35:31know
35:31Merv
35:31Griffin
35:32and Mike
35:32Douglas
35:33these live
35:33on
35:33and that's
35:34where this
35:34is going
35:35to go
35:35even more
35:36so
35:36in a
35:36multi-platform
35:37world
35:37where Stephen
35:38Colbert
35:38can show
35:39up on
35:39Broadway
35:40on YouTube
35:40on Netflix
35:41and a million
35:42other places
35:42besides writing
35:44a Lord of the
35:44Rings script
35:46Michael Grimwald
35:47Let me show you
35:48some of the
35:49moments from
35:49this week
35:50Let me show
35:50You Bruce
35:51Springsteen
35:51Thank you
35:54Stephen
35:56I'm here in
35:57Support tonight
35:57for Stephen
35:58because
35:59You're the
36:00first guy
36:00in America
36:01Who's lost?
36:01Show because
36:02we got a
36:02president
36:03who can't
36:03take a
36:04joke
36:08and
36:10because
36:11Larry and
36:12David Ellison
36:12feel they need
36:13to kiss his
36:14to get what
36:14they want
36:15so these
36:16are
36:20anyway
36:20Stephen
36:21these are
36:21small minded
36:22people
36:22they got
36:22no idea
36:23what the
36:23freedoms
36:24of this
36:24beautiful
36:24country
36:25are supposed
36:26to be
36:27about
36:27This is
36:28for you
36:32we went
36:33on to
36:33perform
36:33the streets
36:34of Minneapolis
36:35a beautiful
36:36and haunting
36:37ballad for
36:38the Americans
36:39who lost
36:40their lives
36:40there
36:40and the
36:40protesters
36:41who came
36:41out in
36:42protection
36:43of one
36:43another
36:45your boss
36:46your publisher
36:47Echoed Bruce
36:48Springsteen's
36:48message in a
36:49commencement address
36:50this week
36:50I won't use
36:51the word
36:51echo
36:52had a similar
36:53message
36:54I don't know
36:54which one
36:54came first
36:55Let me read
36:55that to
36:56you
36:56This is
36:57from
36:57He said
36:59quote
37:00under this
37:00new
37:00ownership
37:01CBS
37:01has already
37:02altered
37:03programming
37:03personnel
37:04and policies
37:05in ways
37:06that align
37:06more closely
37:07with the
37:07administration's
37:08preferences
37:09rights are
37:10just ink
37:10on paper
37:11unless they're
37:11exercised
37:12standing up
37:13for press
37:14freedom
37:14in court
37:14and losing
37:15is still
37:16a much
37:16healthier
37:17outcome
37:17than standing
37:18down
37:18and letting
37:19the administration
37:20simply rewrite
37:21the rules
37:21our country
37:22has some
37:23of the
37:23strongest
37:23legal
37:24protections
37:24in the
37:25world
37:25for free
37:26expression
37:26and due
37:27process
37:27they mean
37:28nothing
37:28if the
37:29press
37:29is too
37:30timid
37:30to defend
37:31them
37:32interestingly
37:34a lot
37:35of the
37:36MAGA
37:36Sort of
37:37movers
37:37and shakers
37:38that were
37:38most vocal
37:39ahead of the
37:4024 election
37:41were most
37:41vocal about
37:42one issue
37:42and it was
37:43free speech
37:44They are now
37:45under hard
37:46tortoise shells
37:47as Donald
37:48Trump and his
37:49administration
37:49trample that
37:52Well, that's
37:53Right, we've
37:53seen that
37:53pattern
37:54throughout this
37:55term where
37:56Trump has
37:56Sued news
37:57outlets
37:58including my
37:59own the
37:59New York
38:00Times
38:00Filing defamation
38:02suits
38:03his FCC
38:03chairman
38:04Brendan
38:04Carr
38:05we all
38:05know has
38:06threatened
38:06other television
38:07personalities
38:08including Jimmy
38:09Kimmel who
38:09was suspended
38:10off the air
38:11for three
38:11days by
38:12ABC and
38:13Disney
38:13after a
38:14threat was
38:14lobbed his
38:15way from
38:15Carr
38:16It's
38:17interesting
38:17Dominic you
38:18were talking
38:18about grace
38:19You know
38:19Stephen
38:20Colbert
38:21over the
38:22last ten
38:22months or
38:23so when
38:24we knew
38:24his show
38:24was going
38:25to be
38:25cancelled
38:26never really
38:27spoke that
38:28Ill a word
38:29about his
38:30bosses at
38:30least in
38:31such unvarnished
38:32language as
38:32Bruce Springsteen
38:33used in that
38:34clip he was
38:35graceful about
38:36It's of course he
38:36poked fun at
38:37CBS, of course.
38:38poked fun at
38:38Paramount, that's
38:39something that
38:39David Letterman
38:40used to do on
38:41the late show
38:41back when he
38:42was the host
38:43but as you
38:44He mentioned him.
38:45didn't mention
38:45Trump on the
38:46Air last night
38:47and there could
38:47have been a
38:48Couple different
38:48reasons for that
38:49but I think
38:50that allowing
38:50his guests
38:51to voice
38:53this anger
38:54this fury
38:55that I think
38:56a lot of
38:56people on
38:57the left
38:57a lot of
38:58People fans
38:58of Colbert
38:59feel that
39:00free speech
39:01and comedy
39:02and satire
39:03of which there
39:04is an
39:04incredible
39:05tradition in
39:06this country
39:06and in our
39:07politics has
39:08been suppressed
39:09in this new
39:10era and not
39:11just because of
39:12active litigation
39:14and threats
39:15from the
39:15administrations but
39:16also out of
39:17self-censorship
39:18we've seen
39:19networks like
39:20ABC and
39:20CBS go out
39:22of their way
39:22to settle
39:23cases brought
39:24by the
39:24President that
39:25many legal
39:26Experts said...
39:27were frivolous
39:28and would
39:28never have
39:28made it past
39:30review in
39:31the courts
39:31but in this
39:32race to
39:33placate him
39:34It feels like
39:35some of these
39:36mass media
39:37operations have
39:38almost given
39:39him more
39:39permission to
39:40be even more
39:41aggressive and
39:41even more
39:42assertive and
39:43I think that
39:43what my
39:43Publisher A.G.
39:45Sulzberger was
39:45talking about
39:46Last night was
39:47that the
39:48freedoms of
39:48the press
39:48that we
39:49have in
39:49this country
39:49are only
39:50valuable if
39:51news outlets
39:52Exercise them
39:53and fight for
39:54them and that
39:55It's better to
39:55Challenge them
39:56and go to
39:57court than
39:57simply to
39:58lay down
39:58and I think
39:59That's a lesson.
40:00that everybody
40:00in journalism
40:01and entertainment
40:02Frankly in this
40:03country would be
40:04worthwhile to
40:05remember
