00:00My name is Mike Rowe, and this is my job.
00:05I explore the country looking for people who aren't afraid to get dirty.
00:09We're going to have to make a puke.
00:11Oh, shut up.
00:12No!
00:13Hard-working men and women who earn an honest living
00:17doing the kinds of jobs that make civilized life possible for the rest of us.
00:22Now get ready to get dirty.
00:28Coming up on Dirty Jobs...
00:30Ow, ow, ow.
00:31This hurts everywhere.
00:33...in a faraway realm called Windsorland.
00:35We break him down, we move him to the dump.
00:37That's our final destination.
00:39A day at work means doing the twist.
00:41Like an acrobat.
00:41Another house acrobat.
00:43Ooh, what happened?
00:44And popping in a shoulder or two.
00:46Oh!
00:47What is this job doing to you, man?
00:48You're jacked up, curled up like a pretzel, and your joints are flying out of whack.
00:51And in this not-so-magic kingdom...
00:55A broken home is a good thing.
00:57A house divided cannot stand.
01:00And later...
01:01What are you thinking about?
01:02I thought I knew how to pick up women.
01:04But in this strange place, a good rap gets you nowhere.
01:07Oh, yeah.
01:08These females put up a tough exterior, but inside, they're soft.
01:11She's still attractive.
01:12Even cut in half and face down.
01:14I find that a hands-on approach works best, and a dirty mind.
01:17And try to capture the quality of that pose that she's in.
01:20Around the breasts, around the waist.
01:21Yeah, I just, you know, I mean, I feel like when we've just met...
01:25We've got to cover every square inch of this thing.
01:30Dirty time, getting down to it.
01:34Dirty time, ain't nothing to it.
01:37Dirty time, someone's gotta do it.
01:41Someone's gotta do them dirty jobs.
01:46I admit it.
01:47When they told me I was coming to Windsorland today, I was kind of excited.
01:50What could it be?
01:51I thought.
01:52Never Never Land?
01:53Could it be an amusement park like Disneyland?
01:56No.
01:57Windsorland is not an amusement park.
01:59Windsorland is a mobile home park.
02:01At least it used to be.
02:03As you can see, most of the mobile homes are off being mobile.
02:07Those that remain are about to go on their last trip.
02:12So that's Eric, and he's dragging a tree.
02:14And this is Sam Borden, and he runs a company called what?
02:17Sam Borden's Mobile Home Service.
02:19You put your name in the title.
02:20Yeah.
02:21Smart fellow.
02:23We are at Windsorland.
02:25Yep.
02:25And it's true that this is the home that we're gonna get out of here.
02:30Yes.
02:30And that is your job in a nutshell?
02:33Yep.
02:33We break them down, we move them to the dump, and that's where they crush them, and that's
02:37their final destination.
02:38All right.
02:38So this one, for instance, how long has it been here, do you know?
02:41Probably 30 years.
02:4230?
02:43Yes.
02:43Okay.
02:44So we're to the point now where we just have to throw it on an axle and move it.
02:47Throw it on an axle and get it out of here.
02:49Would it be possible to get a look at the inside, see what's what?
02:53If you can handle it.
02:55Oh, I can handle it, Sam.
02:57I can handle it.
02:58Where do we enter?
03:01We're here between the picket fences.
03:02Oh, the white picket fence is a lovely touch.
03:05You know what?
03:06I gotta say, when I glanced at this, my first thought was Norman Rockwell.
03:10I mean, he's...
03:11Oh, but...
03:14Yeah, they let it go a little, didn't they?
03:15Yeah, they let it go a little bit.
03:17How typical is this?
03:20Pretty typical, believe it or not.
03:22Let's have a look inside.
03:23All right.
03:29Did they move?
03:30I'm not sure.
03:30Did they just leave?
03:31This is how they lived.
03:34But they took a lot of their garbage.
03:38Tell me it's plastic.
03:39I hope so.
03:41Do you worry with cleaning any of this, or is this all just going to be hauled?
03:46We will clean out, like, probably the drawers and stuff like that in this room, and then appliances, and things
03:54of that nature.
03:56This scared the hell out of me.
03:57I thought it was a giant rat in the ceiling.
04:00All right, so this would be the bedroom area back here?
04:04Kitchen.
04:07Again, I mean, is there anything to deal with, dude, that this all has to be taken out?
04:11It all has to be taken out.
04:13What was going on in here?
04:15Well, they shredded all their evidence, whatever it was.
04:20Are you kidding me?
04:27Oh, Sam, this is...
04:31Does it surprise you anymore, the conditions?
04:33It actually doesn't.
04:34It's just a heck of a joint.
04:36What in the hell is this?
04:40This is a love swing.
04:43It's a love swing, and I guess that's where they had it mounted at.
04:48There's a harness that just hangs from the ceiling for the purposes of conjugal bliss.
04:52Yeah, I've never seen one, but I guess there's a first for everything.
04:55Explains this thing.
04:56There you go.
04:58What the heck is that?
04:59I have no idea.
05:00Right now, I'm suspicious of everything.
05:03I mean, one minute, it looked like just some harmless attachment, but they're next to the love swing with the
05:09groucho nose next to it.
05:10God knows what went on in this place.
05:13Yeah.
05:15Oh, yeah, that's drug paraphernalia.
05:17Drug paraphernalia.
05:18Well, this clearly was the room where it was all coming together.
05:20This is the main room.
05:22The room for swinging, smoking, breaking, all sorts of laws.
05:26Explains all the shredding.
05:27Explains all the shredding.
05:29This is the crew.
05:30Eric, how are you?
05:32Travis and Bill.
05:34Good to meet you guys.
05:35Kitchen first.
05:39So you're just looking for bulk?
05:40Yeah.
05:41Big, bulky things.
05:41Real heavy stuff, yeah.
05:44Later, another company will help clean up the light trash.
05:49There were originally 130 homes here.
05:52Dishes are done.
05:56I've been having troubles with my drawers for years.
06:00Eventually, it'll be stores and condos.
06:04Barber's chair.
06:05Yeah.
06:06Really does make you wonder what the heck went on in this mobile home.
06:08If it could go on, it probably went on.
06:10You see what's going on in this place?
06:12The tragedy of this job is we got here too late.
06:15Brownie?
06:16There's no booze, there's no love.
06:20Fairly certain I've seen this somewhere.
06:22No.
06:23What happened?
06:24My shoulder came out.
06:26Your shoulder came out?
06:27Dislocated.
06:29You all right?
06:30Yeah.
06:31How often does that happen?
06:33About two or three times a week.
06:35You sure you're in the right line of work, Travis?
06:37Why don't you focus on, like, the CDs and the, you know, fashion items.
06:40It's just when I twisted a different one.
06:42Yeah, here.
06:44You don't lift anything heavier than bubble pack.
06:48I worked through it.
06:50Inside's done.
06:52Now what?
06:52Underneath, up top?
06:53We'll start with the underneath.
06:55It looks like we have a four-axle home.
06:59Are you saying we crawl over to that thing and attach a, what do you put on it?
07:06Two guys bolt the axles up in the middle hangers, and two guys bolt the axles up on the outside
07:11hangers.
07:12What's holding this thing up right now?
07:14Those metal piers.
07:15And there are how many of those?
07:18Probably about 50.
07:21So these would be the axles?
07:22These are the axles.
07:24And we'll just set them right back here.
07:27And we'll just set the first one about right here.
07:32Just right over to the side.
07:33That'll work.
07:34All right.
07:35Now this is where you and Trav will go underneath of the home and drag this axle underneath of the
07:42home.
07:42All right, so Trav, yeah, you've got to really spell stuff out for me because it, look, it appears as
07:46though we're just going to be crawling across rocks.
07:48Ah, that's pretty much it.
07:50You just got to, just however you can get under here.
07:54Should we be taking something with us?
07:56Uh, we kind of have them, you get about halfway and have them shovel.
08:01Come on, man.
08:02Is this, I mean, we're just crawling across razor-sharp rocks here.
08:05Yeah, that's what we do, I'll bet you.
08:09Yeah, that's what we do, I'll bet you.
08:09Grab the hang of it right there.
08:15Hey, man, which one's your bad shoulder?
08:17Uh, the one usually I lay on.
08:21Ow!
08:23Rocks ain't fun.
08:27This is...
08:27Right there's about good because I'm going to want a little movement.
08:32Ow, ow, ow, ow, ow, ow.
08:37I've been caught between a rock and a hard place before, but not rocks that are this sharp.
08:42Man, I hate to complain, but this hurts everywhere.
08:47Coming up...
08:48See, wherever you see that line go, we're going to have to take it off.
08:54Young homewreckers causing a big split.
08:56How much do we do, Trev?
08:58As soon as the bar says stop.
09:00And later...
09:01Is a mannequin with a head, or is a mannequin without a head?
09:04I'm all for a head.
09:05These flawless females can't say no, or anything else for that matter.
09:09We're opening a woman right down the middle.
09:11And she's not complaining.
09:12That's a first.
09:21All right, now what was with this?
09:23You can climb on in, where it's a little more space.
09:26Oh, yeah, I scarcely know what to do with all this extra room.
09:30And if you want, grab one of those shackle things, the metal.
09:35Right under that pipe, yeah.
09:36Now, just so you know, when you're going to start sentences with words like, if you want,
09:40the answer's probably going to be, no, I'd rather...
09:42You want to grab that, uh, grab that, uh, shackle.
09:47Ow.
09:49Ow.
09:50Oh, testicles.
09:52Ow.
09:55Get, get...
09:56Oh.
10:01Great.
10:02All right, what we're going to do is bolt this here.
10:07Just...
10:12Well, this has to be done right, because this is basically going to hold your whole...
10:16This is holding the whole house.
10:17As we go down the highway.
10:19Right.
10:21That's good.
10:22You just want them loose for right now.
10:23All right.
10:25All right, now we can start bolting on the axles.
10:27Go ahead and pull it.
10:28Yeah.
10:29The best way I do it is put my knee under here.
10:32How about my foot?
10:32Yeah, that'll work.
10:35Yeah.
10:36Yeah, I got it.
10:37Ooh.
10:38What happened?
10:39My shoulder.
10:39No.
10:40Your shoulder's out?
10:41Yeah.
10:42No.
10:43What can I do?
10:45Just watch them put it in.
10:46Watch me put it...
10:47What are you...
10:49Oh.
10:51Are you kidding me?
10:52I'm not joking with you.
10:53There it was.
10:57Woo.
10:59You all right?
11:00I'm fine.
11:00I did it so many, it just kind of...
11:03Come on, baby.
11:04What is this job doing to you, man?
11:05You're underneath a mobile home.
11:06You're jacked up, curled up like a pretzel, and your joints are flying out of whack.
11:10I guess I love it.
11:11I don't know how else to say it.
11:14I just do it.
11:15I got a couple theories.
11:16I'll run by you later.
11:17Yeah.
11:23Yeah.
11:29Oh, jeez.
11:35We're going to bring the other two axles to you guys, and we're going to slide them through
11:40the back.
11:41Great.
11:41Yeah.
11:42So we'll just stay under here.
11:44If you want, you can take out that concrete.
11:47Why isn't anything right where I am?
11:49Because that's usually how it happens.
11:53It's like an acrobat.
11:54An under-the-house acrobat.
11:59Dude, how did you learn how to do this?
12:01I mean, this can't be in a manual.
12:03You learn tricks as you go, I guess.
12:08There she is.
12:13Nice.
12:13Now we tighten them.
12:19Tough job, man.
12:21Tough dudes.
12:22All right.
12:22I think that's it.
12:23We can go ahead and crawl out now.
12:40Let me tell you something.
12:42That guy?
12:44Keep him.
12:47Travis.
12:48You're done.
12:50When's the last time you went on one of those?
12:52About 10 years ago.
12:54It's good to be the king.
13:01Well, Eric, it looks like work in question now is not happening under the house.
13:06Yep.
13:06That's good.
13:08What is this called?
13:09That's the mod line.
13:10Mod?
13:11The mod line.
13:12Yeah, that's what separates the houses.
13:14Uh-huh.
13:15Pretty much you got to take all the trim off the top of the roof, all the way down the
13:18whole
13:19house where it splits, and then we'll pull this carpet back, cut all our nails and our
13:24floor.
13:24So, I mean, when you haul this down the road, then, you're hauling two separate pieces?
13:30Two separate pieces.
13:31Of course, this would never fit, obviously.
13:34All right.
13:34Yeah, what can I do?
13:35There's your hammer, and basically, we just start taking this trim off right here.
13:40Uh-huh.
13:41All down the whole length of the house.
13:44See, wherever you see that line go, we're going to have to take it off.
13:56Okay, we're good on that, so now we've got to expose the floor, and then we'll come back,
14:00and we'll run a saw down the whole floor, cut all the nails in the floor.
14:09Man, what's that smell?
14:10It's probably that bathroom right there.
14:12Yeah, there's something going on under the carpet.
14:26When this home was built, they only required nails in the roof and the floor, not the sides
14:31of the home, so these are not your average small nails.
14:42Okay.
14:44All right.
14:44We're good.
14:45So now, everything on the walls and the floor is separated.
14:50Up on the roof?
14:51It's rough.
14:52Coming up.
14:54Well, that's good fun on the back, isn't it?
14:56A new twist on raising the roof.
15:01That's one way to do it.
15:04Then.
15:05This lifts the mobile home up and down.
15:07What goes up must come down, sometimes, when you least expect.
15:11Whoa.
15:13And later.
15:14Holy smoke, she's nearly naked.
15:15I'm going to touch Deanna while she's looking at me.
15:17That could be awkward.
15:18Getting down and dirty with a model citizen.
15:20You can't really finesse it at this stage, can you?
15:40It's like a day at the beach.
15:42It's like a day at the beach.
15:47So what's it going to be doing?
15:48We're going to expose the mod line first.
15:51Right.
15:51Okay.
15:52Like we did on the inside of the house.
15:54Right.
15:54And after we expose the mod line, then we're going to cut around the whole perimeter of
16:01the roof and fold it back.
16:04Well, how long does this process normally take?
16:0630, 45 minutes.
16:07With us here?
16:08Probably about two, three hours.
16:09There you go.
16:09Takes, Bill, about 30 minutes.
16:11Bill, relax, buddy.
16:12All right.
16:13We're going to be up here a while.
16:14I just start on one side, go all the way down.
16:16Right.
16:16And then fold it back.
16:17And then sometimes I have to cut the other side, and sometimes, you know, not.
16:20You cut it the whole way?
16:22Yeah.
16:22Or you just, all right.
16:23I just run right down the saw, though.
16:24And it's pretty thin stuff.
16:26Right.
16:27So you really don't got to bury the blade.
16:28It's going to angle.
16:29It's going to angle.
16:30It's going to angle.
16:31Just angle it, not like before.
16:34There you go.
16:37It seems like these guys don't do anything standing up straight, and the heat from the
16:41sun reflected off this roof is almost unbearable.
16:45It really pays to be fast up here, and Bill is perfect for the job.
16:49He's the fastest worker and maybe the fastest talker I've ever met.
16:53Well, that's good fun on the back, isn't it?
16:55Well, probably you go across about every 10 feet like this so you can pull it back.
16:58Every 10 feet pull it back?
16:59No, no, I cut it across, straight across like this.
17:08It's about time for this lady, but I should get it out of your chat part.
17:13Something tells me this isn't going to be quite as simple as down below.
17:16Now, this stuff, I'm sure you can see, is very, very sharp.
17:20Yeah, razor sharp.
17:21It's probably sharper than a razor.
17:24Something like that would have just slid across your face.
17:26Breeze catches it the wrong way.
17:28I just make sure when I grab it, I don't have to grab a good grip on it where it
17:31don't
17:31slide.
17:31You got to grab a hold of it good, tight, so it don't slide.
17:34If it slides, it cuts you.
17:35You've been cut once or twice, I guess?
17:36A couple times.
17:38The man has no fear and no gloves.
17:44Removing the aluminum roof cap exposes the area where the two halves of the home are joined.
17:50They've got lag bolts, and they've got carriage bolts.
17:53They're all rusted, so the best way to get them off is just cut them.
17:57Start right here with the saw zone.
18:00Cut.
18:01Bill.
18:01Huh?
18:01You do the hammering and split that as best as you can while he's cutting.
18:05Well, he's already splitting up, but he'll be all right.
18:07Yeah, I know, but when it gets tight.
18:08Fantastic.
18:15Bill's splitting the wood so the saw blade doesn't bind.
18:21Most of the time, they need to have nails or bolts.
18:23They don't have bolts, but usually they're usually only like bolts, bolts, or nails.
18:27This is a double, so they did this one, so we're extra.
18:29Got it.
18:31You don't have to have a sharp blade to do the other part.
18:33What?
18:33You don't have to have a sharp blade to do the other stuff.
18:35Hey, Bill, come here.
18:36Yeah.
18:37How long have you been doing this, man?
18:38Oh, about five years.
18:40Yeah?
18:40It doesn't get any easier either.
18:41You having any fun at all?
18:42Uh, not really.
18:43Yeah.
18:44Not this part of the day.
18:45Yeah, yeah.
18:45Fun in the morning when it's still cool.
18:46You're sweating a little.
18:48Yeah, it's hard to do that.
18:49Okay.
18:50Lots of water.
18:51Yeah.
18:51Do we have any water up here?
18:52Uh, no, but we need to find some.
18:54Well, okay.
18:55Yeah, we should get some.
19:03So, Bill, you normally do this by yourself?
19:06Bill, how long does it take you to do this alone?
19:08Probably about an hour and a half.
19:10I've done it like half hour, probably sometimes.
19:12Yeah.
19:13They put extra nails and bolts in this one.
19:15Usually they're like, bolts every 30 inches or something.
19:18But this guy got nails, five nails in between each bolt.
19:20That's extra.
19:21Probably extra.
19:22This makes it, like, impossible.
19:24Yeah, to go.
19:24Yeah, you just keep changing blades,
19:26because it wears your blades out.
19:27Those nails are pretty tough nails.
19:29Nails are tougher than those.
19:30I noticed that, yeah.
19:31It's almost as though they're made of iron or steel or something.
19:34Yep.
19:35All right.
19:35Are we done that part?
19:36Uh, yeah.
19:37We just gotta go another foot to finish off the end, each end.
19:40We gotta go the rest of the way out to get the completely split.
19:56There you go.
19:57All right.
19:58Marriage line is complete.
20:00Great.
20:02The next part is optional.
20:04Let's go.
20:04The next part is optional, because, uh...
20:06If it's optional, let's not do it.
20:09I take the rest of the roof off to recycle, because that's a couple hundred dollars.
20:12There's real aluminum right here.
20:13Oh, yeah?
20:13That's extra money for myself.
20:15But I usually wait until after I'm done.
20:16After the day's over, and I come back and do it after everybody's done, you know, after
20:18we're done.
20:19You wanna do that?
20:20Might as well do it.
20:21Well, a couple hundred bucks, I guess it's worth it.
20:23Yeah, for me.
20:33It's hot.
20:41Can I get any cleaner aluminum than that?
20:42Nothing on it except for aluminum.
20:44You said it.
20:49That's one way to do it.
20:52That's what we talk about.
20:53We put them around before green.
20:57Bill comes up here and gets his money for taking off a roof.
21:00Then his boss lets him do a little recycling.
21:03It's not easy.
21:05But hey, man.
21:05A few hundred bucks.
21:06A few hundred bucks, right?
21:08That's a joke.
21:17All right.
21:18Thanks.
21:18We should get the help.
21:19My pleasure.
21:21By pleasure, I mean agony.
21:22I'm not quite done yet.
21:23I think I got all the styrofoam off the roof, too.
21:24You don't recycle the styrofoam, do you?
21:26We just throw that off right to the side.
21:28It's a game called Hit Troy with the Styrofoam.
21:30Who wants to play?
21:34The styrofoam is insulation.
21:36Once it's off, maybe we can get out of the sun.
21:43Ah.
21:43Oh, I got him.
21:44There you go.
21:45Ooh.
21:45He's almost lifted the set up right there.
21:48Ah!
21:49Oh!
21:50I scored.
21:50I scored.
21:50Sorry about that.
21:51Oh!
21:52Oh!
21:52Oh!
21:53Oh!
21:53And down goes Troy.
21:54Oh, man.
21:56We got a bingo.
21:57I didn't do that.
21:58Did I do that?
21:58Oh, beautiful.
21:59You all right?
22:01Oh, that doesn't mess up.
22:02Oh, he's fine.
22:03Unless he fell on a pudge.
22:04Coming up.
22:05All right.
22:05That tire thing.
22:06That's going to be an asshole.
22:07No.
22:08Easy.
22:09Piece of cake.
22:11When you're going all the way, even on the road to nowhere, you have to put on some rubber.
22:16Is this fun or what?
22:18And later, they want a dirty girl.
22:19Dirty on the inside.
22:21You know the kind.
22:22The pressure to put out.
22:23And how many mannequins do you turn out?
22:2530,000 mannequins a year.
22:27Can sometimes cause...
22:28Uh-oh.
22:28Performance issues.
22:30Honestly, honey, this almost never happens.
22:40This lifts the mobile home up and down, side to side, in and out.
22:46Near the back of the home, Travis and Eric have set up jacks on metal tracks that will enable
22:52half of the house to be raised and separated.
22:55Sam will control the front movement with the tow truck.
22:59Ready whenever you guys want.
23:02All right.
23:03Come over there.
23:04This mobile home weighs 21,000 pounds, and it is mobile.
23:09A little unnerving when you're working underneath it.
23:14We're good.
23:16Okay.
23:16Good?
23:17Yep.
23:17Now we're going to pull all of our material out.
23:21With all the foundation stands removed, the total weight of this half of the house is resting
23:26on the jacks and the tow hitch.
23:28All right.
23:29Here we go.
23:33Nice and easy.
23:44How much do we do, Trev?
23:46As soon as the boss says stop.
23:48How far?
23:50Hey, that's good, Sam.
23:52We good?
23:53Set some jacks.
23:54Let's come on up.
23:55Let's get our tires on.
23:56All right.
23:57That tire thing.
23:57That's going to be a hassle.
23:59No.
23:59Really?
23:59No.
24:00Easy.
24:00Piece of cake.
24:02Three minutes of tire.
24:04Pardon me, but I've got to help put a tire on a house.
24:08Four over there.
24:09All right.
24:15Here you go.
24:22It takes these guys two days to finish a double wide.
24:26Oh, jeez.
24:28At the landfill, they recycle as much of the material as possible.
24:31And who knows?
24:32Maybe in one form or another, some of this home will end up at a shopping center near you.
24:41Keep your eyes peeled for that love swing.
24:45Big Sam.
24:47You certainly know how to show a fella a good time.
24:50Been an honor.
24:52See you around.
24:53We'll see you around.
24:54In the meantime, it's official.
24:56A house divided cannot stand.
24:58But I'm fairly certain that it can roll.
25:09Is this fun or what?
25:20When I was 13 years old, I fell in love with a mannequin.
25:25Weird, I know, but it's absolutely true.
25:27I called her Heather and this one looks a little bit like her.
25:30Every day after school, I'd walk past the window in that department store in downtown Baltimore
25:35and I'd stare at Heather and Heather would stare back at me and I loved everything about
25:39her.
25:40I loved the way she dressed.
25:41I loved the way she carried herself.
25:43I loved the way she looked at me.
25:46Ultimately, though, the relationship was doomed.
25:49She was older, hung with another crowd.
25:52Plastic.
25:52Since then, I've moved on and I now have learned to appreciate the company of actual women.
25:58But the truth is, I never really got over Heather.
26:02It's a funny thing.
26:03So today, 30-some years later, I've come to the city of industry to Patina V to investigate
26:08and learn everything I can about the mysteries and the makings of mannequins.
26:13What makes them tick?
26:14Why don't some of them have heads?
26:16Who knows?
26:17By the end of the day, if I'm lucky, maybe we'll recapture some of the magic.
26:22Days gone by.
26:24How you doing?
26:26I don't know that she has a name, but I think we could call her a rose between two thorns
26:30at this point.
26:31This is Norm Glazier.
26:32And Norm, you run Patina V?
26:35I'm not sure whether I run it or whether the company runs me, but yes.
26:38And how many mannequins do you turn out in a given year, say?
26:41We can say we turn out maybe 30,000 mannequins a year.
26:45But what is your definition of a mannequin?
26:47Is a mannequin with a head or is a mannequin without a head?
26:51I'm all for a head.
27:08Holy smokes, she's nearly naked.
27:10You must be George.
27:11Hi.
27:12Mike.
27:12How are you?
27:12I'm great.
27:13How are you?
27:15Yeah.
27:17Nice to meet you.
27:18Hi, Mike.
27:19Nice to meet you.
27:19You're Justin?
27:20Yes.
27:20Nice to meet you.
27:22Wow, you have absolutely, except for the face, captured her likeness.
27:26How long have you been standing like this?
27:30I get breaks.
27:31Yeah?
27:32On and off.
27:32But my longest day is probably seven hours here.
27:35It must be very tiring after a while.
27:37I'm sore by the end of the day.
27:38Yeah?
27:39I feel that way all the time.
27:40What about you, Justin?
27:41How long has it taken to get to the point where you are right now?
27:45It takes 40 to 50 hours.
27:47Did you get into this part of the business on purpose or did it just sort of happen?
27:51I always loved classical sculpture, so I studied it, and one thing led to another, and I ended
27:56up here.
27:56How close is this to being finished?
27:58It's within minutes.
28:00Minutes?
28:01Yeah, you're going to finish it, by the way, so get ready.
28:04I'm going to touch Deanna?
28:05Yeah.
28:06While she's looking at me?
28:07Well...
28:07That could be awkward, but I'll do it.
28:10Take this bursal broom, drag that over the form very firmly.
28:15Right.
28:15Trying to break down any tool marks you see.
28:18See, they're very subtle.
28:19Right.
28:19But they're there, and we've got to get rid of them.
28:22Can you feel it?
28:23Oh, yeah.
28:23It's as if you're pulling the shape together, and you're kind of making...
28:26You're pulling that skin over the form, making it fluid.
28:31Okay, so now what you do is you're taking the paintbrush, and you want to crisscross over
28:36the bristle marks, just trying to smooth them down and get rid of them.
28:40You're using a kind of what they call slip.
28:43It's a mixture of clay and water, so it's like mud.
28:45And what you're doing is you're taking out the scratches from the broom that you've been
28:51using.
28:51And that's pretty much the last phase.
28:54Then it goes into the mold shop.
28:55How do you start?
28:56I mean, what's the first thing you do when she walks in here for the first time, and it's
29:00just the armature?
29:04Okay, so basically, you start out by filling in the areas that seem to need it most.
29:14Yeah, you got it.
29:16Look at that.
29:17You're a natural.
29:19Empathize with the model, you know?
29:21And look at her and try to capture the quality of that walking pose that she's in.
29:27Yeah, I'm capturing something right here, Deanna.
29:29Pardon me, but I'm just trying to...
29:34Don't have to get too involved in any one part at this point.
29:37Trying to see the whole thing start to emerge.
29:40And it's very hard at this stage, but after a little while, it won't take long for it to
29:45start taking shape, coming together.
29:55You have an intuitive touch for this stuff.
29:57You seem to be doing it without any instruction.
30:01Well, I do have a natural inclination for mud and clay and such.
30:07The problem here is that we can't keep this.
30:10It's too fragile.
30:11It won't hold up.
30:12The only thing you can do is take a positive, make a mold of it, and then from the end
30:17of
30:17the mold, you make a fiberglass casting, which is rigid, which is durable, and which you can work with.
30:22This is too fragile.
30:24Unfortunately, it has to be thrown away.
30:26We take pictures, and that's it.
30:28You're not like the others.
30:29You don't play those same crazy mind games.
30:32In the end, you went out on a limb.
30:35Don't think I'll ever forget that.
30:40Coming up, his job is hands.
30:42He does hand jobs all day.
30:43Up when you got too much time.
30:45It hardens up.
30:46All right.
30:46I didn't pull it out fast enough.
30:48A lot of tugging leads to a happy ending.
30:51There you go.
30:52Bueno.
30:52Good.
30:53I've got to hand it to you, Jaime.
31:02So here comes our dancer.
31:05And this is Kuko, by the way.
31:07How are you?
31:08Fine.
31:09How are you?
31:09I'm great.
31:09How long have you been working for this guy?
31:11Oh, like, I don't know, more than 25 years.
31:14You know what?
31:14After 25, you stop counting.
31:18So this is our dancer series that we just saw encased in fiberglass.
31:23That is correct.
31:25Underneath here is a clay model.
31:29What we have to do now is open this up, and from that point on, we can go.
31:34You want to open it up?
31:35I'd love to open it up.
31:36Man, we're literally opening up.
31:38Exactly.
31:38We're opening a woman right down the middle.
31:40Exactly.
31:41And she's not complaining.
31:43That's a first.
31:46Norm tells me that the heads for the mannequin bodies are produced separately.
31:49Any head can be attached to any type of mannequin body.
31:54Possibilities are endless.
31:55This flexibility allows Patina V to better fulfill customer demands.
32:00So in the end, what's a mannequin cost?
32:04What will this one cost?
32:04The air conditioning, power steering, and power brakes.
32:07It'll run some ways in the neighborhood of $700 to $900 a piece.
32:11So less than $1,000 fully equipped.
32:13Fully equipped.
32:16Oh, yeah.
32:17There we go.
32:19Now, if you notice, the clay is totally ruined now.
32:24Yeah.
32:25But we don't need the clay because the shell that you've taken off is what we now call a waste
32:30mold.
32:30Right.
32:31Now, what has to be done is that has to be sanded, cleaned, and then the actual fittings are positioned
32:38in there.
32:39And once that is done, then we do a production mold, a casting from this.
32:44Uh-huh.
32:44Uh-huh.
32:52Uh-huh.
33:13Uh-huh.
33:20Uh-huh.
33:22Uh-huh.
33:24Uh-huh.
33:27Uh-huh.
33:28Uh-huh.
33:28Honestly, honey, this almost never happens.
33:33I lost my pressure.
33:37Oh, there we go.
33:38Back in business.
33:45You want a dirty girl, filthy, dirty on the inside, you know the kind.
33:54The waste mold is used to cast a prototype.
33:57The prototype is assembled and any imperfections are removed.
34:04Then, a final mold is made from the prototype and mannequin production begins.
34:10Patina V makes its molds with plaster from the hemp fiber, which is an environmentally
34:15friendly material.
34:16Why don't you say hello to Mike?
34:17How are you?
34:18Hello, Mike.
34:18How are you?
34:18Why don't you say hello to Mike?
34:19How are you?
34:19Hello, Mike.
34:20How are you?
34:20How are you?
34:29The material we're using is urethane.
34:31Not polyurethane.
34:32No, urethane.
34:34And it is environmentally correct because it's not letting any VOCs into the atmosphere.
34:40Right.
34:40It's a cleanup process.
34:42And quite frankly, we make a better product.
34:44Here's where technology has helped us over the years.
34:47These are the shoulder fittings he's putting in.
34:50So that goes on the outside like so.
34:54It's basically just screwing those in, right?
34:56This is the real deal with real molds, not the waste molds, so precision counts.
35:01The rotocasting machine keeps the molds turning 360 degrees to ensure that the liquid urethane
35:08spreads evenly throughout.
35:10Ready?
35:10Good?
35:11Yep.
35:11It takes about 10 minutes, and the result should be a perfect and lightweight hollow body cast.
35:17First, though, we've got to get the urethane inside the mold.
35:20All right.
35:21Did I break it?
35:21Yeah.
35:22Like many things that seem straightforward and simple, it isn't.
35:25Barely touched it.
35:26Excuse me.
35:27Let me.
35:28Excuse me.
35:34What did I do wrong?
35:35I didn't make it tight.
35:36No, you just have to, when you start, just press, leave it, let it go.
35:41Let it go.
35:42Oh.
35:45Close.
35:4710 minutes and a few hundred rotations.
35:49Later, it's time to see my body of work.
35:52Mine's got some zits on her back.
35:55Yeah, that one is, that one has a lot of material.
35:58Yeah.
35:59See, this is all smooth, and mine's got it.
36:03It's only because these are air bubbles, and you might not have held it long enough when
36:07you put it in there.
36:08Yeah.
36:09But it's a good first try.
36:12You're very kind.
36:14Coming up.
36:15What good is a mannequin, or what good is a woman, unless she has a makeup on?
36:19Really?
36:19Did you just say that?
36:20Taking a shot at giving a facial.
36:22See, this is just a great mystery to me.
36:24I mean, I don't even know how to touch her.
36:25I'm holding her by her throat, and the whole thing feels wrong.
36:27And blowing it.
36:28Will you ever forget her?
36:29Oh, no.
36:40The newly minted cast sits for 24 to 48 hours, which allows any residual oil or gas trapped
36:47inside the mannequin to dissipate.
36:49Then it's sanded.
36:54While the paint department finishes the torsos, hands for the mannequins are produced in another
36:59area, using a slightly different production process.
37:04So then, I guess the first thing to do when you're making hands is make sure you protect
37:08your hands.
37:09This is all hot stuff.
37:11All hot stuff.
37:12You're Jaime?
37:13Yeah, I'm Jaime.
37:14Nice to meet you.
37:15Nice to meet you.
37:16So is Jaime the official hand guy here?
37:19He's in charge of this department.
37:21His job is hands.
37:22Exactly.
37:23He does hand jobs all day.
37:24He does hand jobs all day.
37:25All righty.
37:27Now this is liquid?
37:29That is polyvinyl chloride.
37:31Right?
37:32And that's PVC.
37:33PVC.
37:34Exactly.
37:35So you're gonna pour it.
37:37Whoops.
37:38That's it?
37:39Just like you're pouring to make pancakes.
37:41Pink pancakes.
37:42Jaime says that making a set of hands takes about five to six minutes when you know what
37:47you're doing.
37:51It involves cooking the liquid PVC in boiling water.
37:55Let it set.
37:57Put it in.
37:58Put it in.
37:59So what's happening in there, Norm, now chemically?
38:01Is just heating it?
38:02What you're doing is allowing the material to adhere to the inside of the mold.
38:09Now, you're gonna pour out most of the material as long as the coating holds to the mold itself.
38:18Ah!
38:20Ah!
38:21Ah!
38:22Straight in just like this.
38:23Hands are quickly immersed in hot water again.
38:26Up, up, up, up.
38:28Now you're gonna pull the hand.
38:30Reheating the hands makes them flexible, so they're easier to pull out of the molds.
38:36At least, that's the way things go when things are done correctly.
38:40When you've got too much time...
38:42It hardens up.
38:43Yeah.
38:43So you're gonna pull it out.
38:45You pull it out.
38:46Get it in there.
38:47Get it in there.
38:48More hot?
38:48Yeah.
38:49All right, I didn't pull it out fast enough, so he's gonna heat it up.
38:51The whole thing is very much of a, like, the clock's always ticking.
38:54Exactly.
38:55You gotta move, move, move.
38:56That's why they're working against the clock and they're doing production while something
38:59is getting heated.
39:00That's why a guy like me is so frustrating to have around.
39:12There you go.
39:14There you go.
39:16There you go.
39:17There you go.
39:18There you go.
39:18Good.
39:19Fantastic.
39:20I gotta hand it to you, Jaime.
39:22That's a real job you got there.
39:24It's a hot hand.
39:29Cold water.
39:30Cold water.
39:31Cold water.
39:33Okay.
39:34All right, now we're into the makeup department.
39:38What good is a mannequin or what good is a woman unless she has her makeup on?
39:41It's the same theory.
39:43Really?
39:43Did you just say that?
39:44I sure as heck did.
39:45Man, I'll tell you what.
39:46I love, I didn't.
39:47You did.
39:48I did.
39:48You did.
39:49Got it.
39:49Now, these people here do exactly what women all over the world do.
39:54When they get up in the morning, they transform themselves into something lovely with the use of makeup.
40:04These gentlemen here take an inanimate object and transform them into something beautiful and lovely through the use of makeup.
40:14The creativity of the makeup is done by our creative director and by our sculptor.
40:21When they create a new line, they do a new makeup depending upon what Maybelline or whatever the cosmetics house
40:26is doing.
40:27Mm-hmm.
40:27These people here then get a mask, which you see on the walls here.
40:31And each mask is numbered.
40:33So if the order calls for 04-3, they pull the mask off and they copy it.
40:38I like that 04-3.
40:40I do too.
40:41I like all of them.
40:42But they do not create.
40:43They just copy.
40:45They copy.
40:47What are you thinking about?
40:48What is going through your head?
40:52Heather was thoughtful.
40:54Heather cared about the other people in the window.
40:57You just lost your cell phone.
41:01Don't.
41:03This is Oscar.
41:04Oscar is our chief makeup artist.
41:06He's in charge of this department.
41:08It takes him about one hour to do one makeup.
41:11One face.
41:12That's the rule of thumb here.
41:16Oh, no.
41:17It looks like I just gave her a black eye.
41:20It's just...
41:20This is just a great mystery to me.
41:23Yeah.
41:24I don't know what to do.
41:25I mean, I don't even know how to touch her.
41:26I'm holding her by her throat.
41:27The whole thing feels wrong.
41:31Look at that.
41:32I gave her a big old bushy mess there.
41:35That's terrible.
41:35Let me see.
41:35Let me see.
41:36Oh, my God.
41:37You want me to sign my name here?
41:39Yeah.
41:41A little bit of yellow.
41:42I'd like to put some sleep in the corner of her eye right here.
41:44Yeah.
41:44Like she just woke up.
41:45There is some here, too.
41:51A makeup artist is born.
41:53Yeah.
41:53A star.
41:55You like?
41:55You jealous?
41:56Should we put arms on her or just let it go like this?
41:58Let's go where it is.
41:59I think we'll just let her go like this.
42:01It's fantastic.
42:04Okay.
42:05Oscar.
42:06You're very kind.
42:09I appreciate it.
42:10I'll never forget you.
42:11Will you ever forget her?
42:12Oh, no.
42:13Not at all.
42:14Will you?
42:17Heather had hair like yours, the color of honey, long and flowing.
42:23Of course, Heather also had a face.
42:30Yeah, these are maggots.
42:32You know how I wound up on a maggot farm?
42:34I was up in Alaska shooting a story about geese and a guy came up to me and said,
42:38Mike, you ever been on a maggot farm?
42:40And I said, no.
42:41And he said, would you like to?
42:42And I said, sure.
42:43And he said, I know of one.
42:45And I said, great.
42:46And that's how dirty jobs happen.
42:48Now, I don't know if you and I are ever going to run into each other and I don't know
42:52if you've got a line on a maggot farm, but if you know of a dirty job and you'd like
42:56me to hear about it, don't count on the fact that you and I are going to meet in Alaska
43:01or
43:02anywhere else.
43:03Go to discovery.com forward slash dirty jobs and tell me all about it.
43:07If it's good, like this, I'll find you.
43:13Travis, where exactly the work taking place?
43:16We're underneath the center of the mobile home.
43:18Okay.
43:22We're in California, jackass.
43:23Next question.
43:24I'm taking job applications.
43:26Are you?
43:27Yeah.
43:28Hey, that's great.
43:29As soon as I get out of here, I'll fill one out.
43:30Okay.
43:31All right.
43:32I'll be using pencil and invisible ink.
43:35She's the ideal woman.
43:36He's not going to talk back to you.
43:39Don't send me angry letters, okay?
43:41He said it.
43:42I didn't.
