00:00Hello everyone, I am Vinita Paramesh. Like every time this time too, the Bengaluru Karga is happening grandly.
00:06So why is this Bengaluru Karga celebrated and who celebrates it?
00:10And shouldn't we learn about its mythological background?
00:14Karga means to carry it on the head without touching it by hand.
00:17The Bengaluru Karga actually has a history of 800 years.
00:21This Karga is traditionally celebrated by the Vahnikul Kshatriya community.
00:25They have been celebrating it for generations.
00:27The Karga is also celebrated in other towns across Karnataka.
00:31So if we want to look at its mythological background, it begins after the Kurukshetra walk.
00:36The Pandavas are making their way to heaven.
00:38During this journey, Mother Draupadi suddenly faints.
00:41The Pandavas are not aware of this.
00:42When Mother Draupadi finally wakes up, right in front of her stands a fearsome demon named Timirasur.
00:48In order to protect herself from him, Mother Draupadi creates a small army of her own.
00:53So what was this army like, you ask?
00:55From her head came the Yajaman, from her mouth, the Ghante Pujari, from her forehead, the Ganachari, from her ears,
01:02the Gaudas, and from her shoulders, the Veer Kumaras.
01:06This small army then battles against Timirasur and ultimately defeats him.
01:11Afterwards, Mother Draupadi says, I am going to heaven and won't return to earth.
01:15As she leaves, they cry out, you created us.
01:17If you go, who will be our refuge?
01:19And saying that, they take the very swords that they have with them, what we call Halgu Seve, they take
01:25it and stab themselves in the chest.
01:27They wail, begging her not to go.
01:29At that moment, Mother Draupadi gives them her word, saying, alright, for three days every year, I promise I will
01:35come and stay with you here on earth.
01:37And so, those very same three days are what we celebrate today as the Karga festival.
01:43Those three days when the Mother comes down and resides on earth are precisely the days celebrated as the Karga
01:49Utsav.
