00:00Thousands of people from across Nagaland stand together for the National Anthem.
00:09These visuals are from the Festival of Festivals, the Hornbill Festival.
00:16And this venue, Kisama, has its own story.
00:18The name blends two neighboring villages, Ki from Kingwe Ma, Sa from Fisama and Maas,
00:24simply meaning village.
00:25A shared space built to celebrate shared culture.
00:30Once the anthem wraps, Kisama switches instantly from calm to full pop celebration.
00:36Drums, war cries, bright shawls, Hornbill has officially begun.
00:45Seventeen tribes take over this arena.
00:47Ao, Angami, Soomi, Lotha, Konyak, Chakesang, Chang, Khyamnyungan, Phom, Rengma, Sangtam,
00:54Yumkyun, Siliang and Pochure.
00:56Each with their own dances, weaving styles, chants, warrior tradition, harvest rituals and
01:01textile stories passed on for generations.
01:03The Konyaks bring fierce warrior steps.
01:05The Angamis bring harvest rhythms.
01:08Ao, log drummers shake the whole arena.
01:10The Chakesang shawls.
01:12The Zeliang bamboo craft.
01:13Every tribe adds its own signature moment.
01:16But not everything has been smooth though.
01:18Some tribal bodies have said Hornbill feels too commercial that culture was being packaged for
01:22tourists.
01:23There have been political boycotts too.
01:24In 2021, several eastern Nagaland tribes withdrew after the killings in Mon district.
01:29And in the early 2000s, some traditional costumes still used real Hornbill feathers,
01:34a historic warrior symbol.
01:36But with stronger conservation rules and growing awareness,
01:38replicas replaced the real feathers and became the norm by the 2010s.
01:42Still, every December, Hornbill keeps its spirit.
01:45It's a massive cultural catch-up.
01:47A place where Nagaland's tribes preserved, perform and reinvent the traditions for the new generation.
01:55A festival that starts with one anthem and then bursts into 17 stories.
