00:00How much does it cost to raise a child in Taiwan?
00:04Some parents say it can reach several hundred thousand U.S. dollars, far above what the
00:09government plans to help with.
00:11To raise a child, it should be $400,000 to $500,000 or even $1,000 to $1,500.
00:20Taiwan's government is proposing a monthly child subsidy of about $160 U.S. dollars for
00:26children age 0 to 18.
00:28Under the plan, children age 0 to 6 would get the full $160 U.S. dollars in cash.
00:35From age 7 to 18, half would be paid in cash, the other half would go into a government-managed
00:41savings account.
00:43If paid in full, parents would get around $35,000 U.S. dollars over 18 years.
00:50The plan comes as Taiwan continues to grapple with one of the world's lowest birth rates.
00:54But some say the details need to be clearly explained to the public.
00:59How much does it cost to make the people know?
01:02When the people know it, they will be more confident.
01:05If they really need to do this plan, the people think they only got $2,500, and not
01:10$5,000.
01:11While some say the payments don't go far enough, others say that any help is welcome.
01:35The policy is still being refined before it takes effect, as Taiwan looks for more ways
01:41to reverse its declining birth rate.
