Hot Ones - Season 29 - Episode 10: Hilary Duff Tests Her Luck While Eating Spicy Wings
Transcript
00:00What's happening to me right now? It's like a hell hole.
00:14Hey, what's going on, everybody? For First We Feast, I'm Sean Evans,
00:16and you're watching Hot Ones. It's the show with hot questions and even hotter wings.
00:20And today we're joined by Hilary Duff. She's a singer, songwriter, and actress who's been
00:24a cultural staple for decades, and she's back with her newly released acclaimed album,
00:28Luck or Something, and gearing up for her first world tour in 18 years. Be on the lookout for
00:32the Lucky Me Tour coming to a city near you, including Madison Square Garden this summer.
00:36Hilary Duff, welcome to the show. I'm so excited to be here.
00:40How are you around hot sauce? Before we get started.
00:42I'm good around hot sauce. I don't recognize any of these. Probably they're not a kitchen staple
00:49for me, but I do have at least 10 hot sauces in my refrigerator at all times.
00:55So we have a good foundational... Base?
00:57Yeah, we have a good base to build on. Are you ready to get started?
01:00Yeah, but I'm not trying to be too cocky. I'm terrified for what's about to happen.
01:03Also, just this aroma of spice, it's strong right now.
01:31So the viewer knows, like, it's also in the air.
01:34Cheers. Cheers.
01:41Mmm. Very good. A little sweetness.
01:50Okay. Nothing too serious.
01:53So I'd imagine that it's kind of a trippy experience to create a setlist for a new tour
01:58featuring songs that you wrote more than two decades ago.
02:01Mm-hmm.
02:01Has there been a funniest or most sentimental moment in rediscovering the bops of your past?
02:06Like, I'd imagine in some ways it's like reading an old diary.
02:10Well, we don't have to pretend that you haven't seen embarrassing things about me on the internet.
02:14So, you know, there are certain songs that the fans are, like, really fighting to be heard.
02:23And some of those include The Girl Can Rock, The Math, some real deep cuts that I don't know if
02:35I can embody anymore.
02:37But I might try on the show.
02:38But darn it, you'll try.
02:39I am. Honestly, I've had so much fun going back into my catalog and being like, I want to do
02:46that one, I want to do that one, I can't ever do that one.
02:48And I don't want to say never, because, you know, anything goes, and I get to drive the ship.
02:54I took two bites, my friend.
02:56You know what? Then I've got to join you.
02:57I think you do.
02:59I've got to stay on the pace.
03:01Are we going in for number two?
03:02If you're ready.
03:03I am.
03:03So, up next is a pickled garlic sriracha.
03:06Give me anything pickle.
03:08Whoa, it's your favorite.
03:09Love a pickle.
03:10Mm-hmm.
03:11All kinds.
03:19I love that.
03:21Again, there's a sweetness.
03:23Pickley enough for you?
03:24I could use a little more pickle.
03:26Mm.
03:26All right.
03:27We're taking the notes.
03:29Did you take two bites?
03:31Both sides.
03:32All right?
03:33I'm dancing with you, Hillary.
03:34Okay.
03:35All right.
03:36I like that.
03:37That's good.
03:38Good flavor.
03:38Your eyes are getting a little glassy.
03:40Ooh.
03:41I like this.
03:43I like this part.
03:44I like this part.
03:45All right?
03:45I'm just going to try to keep up with you over here, okay?
03:47But I'll make it if you can.
03:49Just tell me if I have anything on my face, okay?
03:50I will.
03:51I got you, and same for me, okay?
03:53Is there a song of yours that bangs hardest in a live show setting?
03:57Like, is there one that you can always depend on, like a comedian who keeps a joke in their
04:00back pocket for when they need to turn the room?
04:03Luckily, I have a few.
04:05Not to brag.
04:09I'm going to say, wake up always slaps.
04:12And then I get to lean on what dreams are made of, which takes everybody there.
04:17It's nice to have that.
04:18Yeah.
04:19You know, I'm a little congested right now, so I'm looking forward to this being, like,
04:24an opener, which I know is coming for me.
04:26Oh, okay.
04:26I'm a little worried about the snot situation.
04:29I'm starting to run, but it's not, my mouth's great.
04:31You're looking good.
04:32You know, I'm on it, all right?
04:34If there's some sauce, if there's something in the teeth, I'll let you know.
04:37Thanks.
04:38But so far, I'm good.
04:39You're good.
04:40You're good.
04:40We can move on to sauce number three, which is a white hot mustard sauce.
04:44Yeah.
04:53I'm getting some heat.
04:54I'm not going to lick my fingers on that one.
04:56Have you observed anything interesting about the day-to-day life of chickens tending to
05:01a coop in your backyard?
05:03Like, how would you describe their world as an outsider looking in?
05:06They are simple creatures.
05:12It's surprising to me how many people don't know that if you don't have a rooster, you
05:17still get eggs.
05:18I didn't know that.
05:20Sean.
05:21What?
05:21How does that work?
05:24Okay.
05:25The eggs aren't fertilized if the rooster's not there, but the chicken lays an egg almost
05:30every day.
05:31So, we don't have a rooster.
05:33It's actually illegal where I live to have a rooster because of the whole cock-a-doodle-doo
05:37thing.
05:38The thing that's cool is watching them establish their pecking order.
05:41They can be quite mean until they figure that part out, and then they just exist together.
05:46I love having chickens.
05:48I feel more bad about eating chickens.
05:52Oh, right.
05:52Like, maybe I should switch the subject real quick.
05:54Yeah.
05:55Yeah.
05:55Yeah.
06:00It's definitely getting spicier.
06:03So, take another bite.
06:04Yeah.
06:05Let's party.
06:06That's what I'm talking about.
06:08Mm-hmm.
06:11It's good.
06:12It's not my typical flavor profile, but it's good.
06:16I don't love Mezcal.
06:18Do you like Mezcal?
06:18Yeah, and this is a smoky sauce.
06:20I get that connection.
06:22I'm getting like a Mezcal vibe.
06:24Unless it's like a perfectly balanced Mezcal cocktail.
06:28It's like a Band-Aid going on.
06:31You know like that rubbery smell?
06:34Now I'm tasting a Band-Aid.
06:35Yeah, okay.
06:36Thanks for that.
06:36Well, I'm tasting a lot of spice cookies, so.
06:39That's true.
06:40I'll meet you halfway.
06:41So, forgive me for not knowing, but I was surprised to learn that you're actually a New
06:45York Times bestselling author having published a supernatural trilogy for young adults.
06:50Yeah.
06:51I'm curious what your bookshelf looked like when you were in the age of your target reader.
06:55Like, were there authors or-
06:56Twilight.
06:58Twilight was the absolute inspiration.
07:06What's happening?
07:09It was like Lizzie McGuire for people for me.
07:11Like, you were just like at that point in your life and you were like, yes!
07:15Somebody speaking exactly to me, directly to me.
07:19Yeah.
07:19As an actress, when you create a series like that, is the idea of adapting it into a TV
07:25or movie exciting or would that puncture the fantasy or your intent in some way?
07:29I think that is always, at least for me, because I am an actress and like mostly a TV
07:36actress, like my mind goes TV show.
07:39And not like, no.
07:41I definitely would probably love to still produce a show like that.
07:44I don't know if I would be in it, but there's just not enough time right now for me.
07:49You're busy.
07:50Yeah.
07:50You're busy.
07:50Yeah, I'm being a pop star right now.
07:54And you're halfway through the Hot Ones gauntlet.
07:57I'm good.
07:57The accolades keep piling up over here.
07:59My lips are burning.
08:00Mine too.
08:01Okay.
08:02Same wavelength, same page.
08:04Okay.
08:04This next one is called Tropical Amarillo, if you're ready.
08:08I feel like the font of this is trying to downplay the experience.
08:13Mmm, it's undermining the heat, right.
08:15It's trying to go tropical, like, you know.
08:18It's just a fun day on the beach.
08:19Yeah.
08:20It's probably a dirty, rotten lie.
08:22Okay.
08:23Here we go.
08:28Okay, I don't like getting a weird bite of chicken.
08:30It really ruins things for me.
08:36Okay.
08:36I'm going to try again.
08:38It's hot.
08:40Yeah.
08:42Unfortunately, that's how the show's format.
08:43Are you, like, hoping for some water now, or?
08:46If you are, I don't know if you're baiting me or not, all right?
08:51But I'm ready whenever you're ready.
08:54So I've heard you say that when Lizzie McGuire got a locker on the show, that you felt like
08:58you finally got a locker.
08:59Yeah.
08:59Were there any other kind of normal kid milestones that you experienced vicariously through your
09:04character?
09:06Bra shopping.
09:08Bra shopping.
09:14It's hot.
09:15It's hot.
09:18I think a lot of the themes of the shows, of the episodes, were actually happening in my
09:25life as well.
09:26Social dynamics and stuff within my friend groups outside of work.
09:31Um, so, I'm trying to think of one in particular while this heat is permeating in my mouth.
09:41Um, it's so nice to hear people's experience with the show or, like, how it helped them or
09:47formed them, whether it be, like, her style or not quite fitting in anywhere.
09:53And I also kind of resonate with that.
09:56I feel like a very big dork dressed in a cool girl's outfit a lot of the time.
10:07I'm going to try to go really teeth here.
10:09Okay, me too, then.
10:09Okay.
10:12I screwed up on the first one.
10:15Okay, I'm cutting a big bite.
10:16All right.
10:19This is homegrown hell?
10:21Mm-hmm.
10:22The literal eyes are, like, popping out of the dragon's head or whatever.
10:26Staring right at you.
10:26Yeah.
10:28Mm-hmm.
10:30Did you take another bite?
10:32I did.
10:32You did?
10:33I did.
10:37The rabbit's got the gun now, yeah.
10:43What's it been like being, like, a pop star time traveler and going from the times of,
10:48like, TRL and record store visits to then, like, pop crave headlines and TikTok trends?
10:55Like, have you had any kind of, like, pop star culture shock?
10:59I don't.
10:59If you're jumping back in the pool?
11:02Yeah.
11:02Like, the world of social media is a wild, like, layer to add on top of entering the workspace
11:10again.
11:12The fact that I have many, many memories of being at TRL is a part of my personality.
11:19There would be the...
11:23There would be the same song on the TRL charts for, like, weeks after weeks after weeks after
11:28weeks, and can you imagine kids dealing with that kind of length in the standing?
11:33Right, right, right.
11:35They'd be like, turn it over.
11:36Like, more, more, faster, more, less of, like, the same.
11:40Like, you know, now it's just this.
11:42So, like, there's definitely, like, a part of me that's just a little slowed down and,
11:47like, likes living in that part of my past and being old.
11:52But also, like, loving a TikTok trend.
11:55You've been busy on it.
11:56I know.
11:56I know.
11:58Shout out, Aaron.
11:59Where are you?
12:00Actually...
12:00In the building, probably phone out, you know?
12:02My hair and makeup also will.
12:05They're dear friends of mine.
12:06And they'll be like, this is the trend we're doing today.
12:08And I'm like, okay, I'll do anything.
12:09I'm still a child actor inside, wanting to please.
12:18I'm going.
12:19I'm going, too.
12:22I got a big bite.
12:23Yeah, I saw that.
12:26Textbook.
12:26I got a big bite.
12:29Kind of hitting me.
12:30It is?
12:31At this point.
12:32Your eyes are glassy.
12:34They are glassy.
12:37Hey.
12:38You want to go in for some water?
12:40If you do.
12:41Some wah-wah?
12:41If you do.
12:41Okay.
12:42Let's go.
12:45Trick-cham.
12:52I refuse.
12:53I'm kidding.
12:54Don't do it.
12:55But does it make it worse?
12:57Is it spreading it?
12:59No, they say that.
13:01But psychologically, I always think the ice water helps.
13:04But I think it's all psychological.
13:06This one's abusive.
13:08Yeah.
13:08You might actually want to take a sip.
13:10Okay.
13:12So I've heard you say that you like your steak very rare, to the point that friends won't
13:17even share with you when you're having one.
13:18Can you give us the do's and don'ts, the Hilary Duff do's and don'ts, of making the perfect
13:23steak at home?
13:24Mm-hmm.
13:27So my mom, I grew up with my mom and dad saying they liked their steak to where a good
13:33vet
13:33could get it back on its feet.
13:35Isn't that horrifying?
13:36Yeah.
13:39I grew up.
13:40Okay.
13:40This is hot.
13:41Yeah.
13:42Hot.
13:42Okay.
13:42Yeah.
13:44Um, the, huh?
13:47The perfect steak.
13:49Perfect steak.
13:51And then be careful around your eyes.
13:52Yeah.
13:53Yeah.
13:53Yeah.
13:54You just had that thought because I was about to wipe the saw me.
13:55I saw it.
13:56I saw it.
13:57I anticipated.
14:00Um, I'm going to double tissue wipe my finger.
14:03I'll get a little.
14:04Okay.
14:05Um, then I like to salt it on both sides.
14:09Is this what you asked me?
14:11My perfect steak.
14:12Got it.
14:13Okay.
14:15I want my cast iron pan really hot and I put beef tallow.
14:20It's like a butter kind of situation.
14:23The wheels are falling off and I am just running.
14:29Um, and I wait till my pan is smoking and I season my steak.
14:35And then I wait it with a weight.
14:38And I do that for like four minutes on each side.
14:41Take it off.
14:41Let it rest.
14:42Slice it.
14:43Big pinch of salt on top.
14:44And we're, we're eating steak.
14:52This is going to be the one that takes me down, right?
14:55No, nothing's taking you down.
14:56Not today, Hillary.
14:58That's right.
15:04I'm excited to just touch my lip.
15:06Okay.
15:10Is my like, I have like a slight delay, but it is about to kick my ass.
15:17You can barely talk.
15:18You can feel it.
15:18Yeah.
15:21Oh my God.
15:26You got the whole team laughing over here, by the way.
15:29Okay.
15:30What's happening to me right now?
15:33It's like a hell hole.
15:35Yeah.
15:37My throat.
15:38Oh my God.
15:39Yeah.
15:39Okay.
15:40Like you kind of taste the smoke with that mezcal one.
15:43That's disgusting.
15:45And then this one, it just kind of turns you to smoke.
15:47Right.
15:48Holy shit.
15:50Okay.
15:52So while you battle the bomb.
15:54Yeah, yeah, yeah.
15:56You know, I'm getting on a flight after this.
15:59I'm so sorry about that.
16:01I always have to apologize from this side of the table.
16:04So while you battled the bomb, I was hoping that you'd be open to talking about the different
16:09eras as defined by Hillary.
16:11I don't even know what you're saying right now.
16:12Hairstyles.
16:13I know, but it's all right because this one has a visual aid.
16:16We'll pull a picture up over here on the monitor.
16:19All right.
16:20What kind of turning point did the brunette era represent to you?
16:24She was trying new things.
16:27She was leaving her old self behind.
16:33And let's talk about the bouffant.
16:36Yeah.
16:37The bouffant probably had some device in there.
16:41It was something called a bump it and you stuck it in there and then it stayed.
16:45Also, why am I wearing Raggedy Ann's dress?
16:47Sean, I don't know what's happening to my brain.
16:49I know.
16:50There's a lot going on.
16:51All right.
16:51But we're almost through this one.
16:53Can you talk me through the origin story of the teal hair?
16:59She was probably in crisis, this girl.
17:01I'm not sure.
17:04Well, one, do you know how hard this hair color is to keep up?
17:08Believe it or not, I have no idea.
17:11You have not a clue.
17:12I do not understand the plight at all.
17:14It's so much work to keep a bright, nice color like that.
17:20You have to bleach your hair, first of all.
17:22Terrible for your hair.
17:24And then you have to constantly put color in your conditioner and keep up with that.
17:31Masks constantly.
17:33Annoying.
17:34Why did I need to do that?
17:35Who was she trying to be?
17:36I don't know.
17:37I think I was dealing with a breakup.
17:40But then I had a baby during COVID like everybody else.
17:44I dyed my own hair at home almost that color.
17:47Gave birth with blue hair.
17:48What?
17:49Why?
17:50Blue hair.
17:51I had a girl.
17:51You know, you can never connect the dots.
17:54I know.
17:54Some things you just look back and you're like, she needed to do this.
17:59How are we feeling?
18:01Horrible.
18:02But it does seem like...
18:03I like you a lot.
18:04You do?
18:05Yeah, but...
18:06The wings?
18:06I'm tired of these wings.
18:12Why do I have a delayed response?
18:14Like, it's not hitting me yet.
18:17Here's the thing.
18:18Yeah.
18:18I can have another bite of this one.
18:19There we go.
18:20Then I will too.
18:24I didn't do it.
18:25I didn't feel the heat.
18:26I don't want the full experience.
18:28You're living it.
18:30Can you give us one highlight and one lowlight of living in the Oakwood Apartments?
18:34It's kind of amazing how many people I've interviewed on this show who've once held a lease there.
18:39Yeah.
18:44Sorry for the sound effects.
18:58The extra bite was ballsy.
19:01Once, I helped, no doubt, unload their gear.
19:06Outside of the Oakwood Apartments?
19:07Yeah.
19:08And I was like, that's no doubt.
19:11But really weird things would happen there.
19:14The highlight was that I got to be really free.
19:17Like, I'm a kid from Texas, so, like, I lived outdoors basically my whole life.
19:21And the Oakwood Apartments, not that there's not probably threats there, but it's like this big gated complex.
19:29And my friends and I would, like, build forts and have, like, hideouts.
19:33And we had a pager.
19:35Before I had my cell phone, we had a pager.
19:36And my mom would just be like, dinner's ready, come home.
19:38Didn't you have, like, a scooter gang you were running?
19:40I had a scooter gang, okay?
19:43But there's, like, a part of my childhood that, like, I don't think exists anymore for our kids.
19:51Like, toilet papering a house?
19:53Like, I don't, I don't think those things happen.
19:56The bygone days.
19:57I know.
19:57I know.
19:58All right, Hilary Duff.
20:00We're here.
20:02You know I'm putting it on.
20:03You know.
20:04You know I'm putting it on.
20:11Thermageddon.
20:12Okay.
20:12You ready?
20:13Mm-hmm.
20:14Dip, flip, and rip.
20:18Dip, flip, and rip.
20:20Let's go.
20:26And with that, Hilary Duff, the wings of death are behind us.
20:31We did it.
20:31I did it.
20:32You did it.
20:36And to close things out, you know you're a self-described old soul.
20:39I've heard you refer to yourself as a granny.
20:41And to make that point, I was hoping that maybe you could show me how to hold a crochet needle.
20:52Of course I can.
20:53Hit here on this side.
20:55Here you go.
20:57I don't even know.
20:58Do you need more than this?
20:59No.
20:59Is that all you need?
21:00Mm-hmm.
21:01And then I'll go on this side.
21:03And then I'm wondering, do you have any, like, foundational crochet advice for crochet beginners like myself?
21:09Ugh.
21:11No.
21:16That one's bad.
21:17Yeah, yeah.
21:18But it's all over.
21:19Uh-huh.
21:21Oh.
21:25Okay, so I'm self-taught.
21:27This is not the way you want to have your yarn.
21:35Um.
21:39I'm getting everything to do here.
21:41You've got to make a slip knot.
21:42You know how to do that?
21:44I can do it for you.
21:45You want mine?
21:46Yeah, yeah, yeah.
21:47You can just talk me through it.
21:49I'm going to come over here.
21:50Yeah, yeah.
21:51Let's get it started for you.
21:54Okay.
21:56I think you took the good bites of me.
21:59Nobody's keeping score.
22:00Yeah.
22:00All right?
22:01We're both at the top.
22:04Okay.
22:05Slip knot.
22:05Mm-hmm.
22:08This is...
22:10I'm going to hold your working yarn over here, okay?
22:12This is my working yarn.
22:14Okay.
22:15The lips are destroyed.
22:20Hold your...
22:22You could drop that down to the ground.
22:25Are you looking like this?
22:27I'm looking like this.
22:29So...
22:30You're working yarn's the one that's attached to the...
22:33ball of yarn still.
22:34Uh-huh.
22:35And this is going to be in your hand, so you don't get confused.
22:45This is like...
22:47When you're in New York in the summer and the humidity and the heat takes over and you finally
22:52get to your apartment and the AC is on and you're just like...
22:55You made me start crying.
22:56Yeah.
22:56It's been such a hard day in the world.
22:59Mm-hmm.
23:00Oh!
23:04This is called casting on.
23:05Basically, you have to...
23:08You're never going to get this right now, Sean.
23:10Yeah.
23:10It's just not going to happen for you.
23:11I'm buddy.
23:12It's not.
23:13It's not going to happen.
23:15Another time.
23:16Okay, but you know what?
23:17Maybe someday if we're like sitting on a plane next to each other...
23:19Yeah, yeah.
23:20It's all good.
23:22Okay, okay.
23:22Because I don't think I can really handle it right now either.
23:24I just want to go home.
23:25But I'm going to get to the point of this and you know what?
23:28When you come back, I'm going to have a hat.
23:30I'm going to have a hot sauce koozie already made for you.
23:33All right, Hilary Duff?
23:34But now at this point, there's nothing left to do but roll out the red carpet for you.
23:37This camera, this camera, this camera.
23:39Let the people know what you have going on in your life.
23:43The only thing that's happening right now is the sensations of the attack.
23:49It was a brutal attack.
23:51I have a world tour that I'm going on for the first time in 20 years.
23:58And a new album that I just put out and it's called Luck or something.
24:02And you can stream it anywhere or you could buy whatever you want.
24:06I don't know.
24:11I think that's all I have going on.
24:18That one comes for you.
24:22Super fun.
24:23This was an absolute honor.
24:25You got to be proud of yourself.
24:26You made it through.
24:28Thank you so much.
24:29You did great.
24:30You did great.
24:31That hurts to smile.
