Ybarra reveals to host David Scott what it was like to fall under the spell of the Devil Next Door
Transcript
00:01Is it going to be rolling when I walk in?
00:04Yeah.
00:04Okay.
00:06Okay, Lord Jesus, please be with me, Lord God.
00:11She was a 30-year-old escort in Kansas City with bills to pay.
00:15It was my only source of income.
00:17It was my only source of survival.
00:20He was a successful businessman with a family and a dark secret.
00:25It started as tying up and strangulation.
00:27Family man by day, sex fiend by night.
00:31He called me a fallen angel that fell from heaven along with Satan.
00:35From behind prison walls, Maggie Ibarra talks for the first time.
00:40You called him Daddy Satan.
00:42I probably did.
00:43About her deal with a sadistic sugar daddy.
00:46I had a house, a car. He was providing those things.
00:50And in return, you entertained his satanic fantasies?
00:54Yeah.
00:54And the brutal slaying of a young woman she lured into the couple's bedroom.
01:00I feel like I'm not a lawyer.
01:03She was your friend who loved and trusted you.
01:06I never thought it was actually going to happen.
01:09Now, Maggie Ibarra is serving a life sentence and finally facing up to her own demons.
01:15You led her to slaughter. Can you admit to that now?
01:19Are you a sadist?
01:33I have an 85 year sentence.
01:35There's witness tampering. That's seven flat years for each charge.
01:39They gave me a harassment charge, which was five flat years also.
01:43There was enticement of a child, which was a 30 year sentence.
01:46And then they gave me a life sentence.
01:49It all began on Valentine's Day, 2020.
01:53Local businessman Michael Hendrick's wife and kids were on vacation.
01:57He was on the internet, scoping out a certain escort.
02:01What might have ended in a single transaction became a twisted year long love affair with a combustible mix of
02:08methamphetamine, money and sexual sadistic murder.
02:13A case unfolding tonight, hours after officers uncovered human remains in rural Jackson County.
02:18The shocking crime lit up the airways.
02:21It's the home of 40 year old Michael Hendricks.
02:23Maggie Ibarra, Hendricks' girlfriend, is charged too.
02:27Both killers are now serving life sentences for the strangulation murder of 32 year old Kenzie Aubrey during violent three
02:34way sex in Ibarra's Kansas City home.
02:38And Maggie, please have a seat.
02:42I'm David.
02:43My sweet.
02:44Sorry, I'm already crying.
02:47Maggie, we're here because we really want to understand the mindset and motivations behind your actions in this case.
02:55And why did you want to talk to us today?
02:58I kind of prayed about it, asked God to guide me and I want to use this as a platform
03:05to be honest and to apologize.
03:08And also to bring awareness to the fact that this could happen to anyone.
03:16I've heard this line before.
03:18Convicted felon finds religion in jail and falls on the sword.
03:22I'm skeptical, of course, but I want to hear Maggie Ibarra out and find out why a young woman was
03:28murdered in her bed.
03:30Hey, I'm not going to sugarcoat anything and neither should you.
03:34Everybody who's going to watch this is going to be trying to figure out what to think.
03:39All right.
03:40Is she being truthful or is she holding back?
03:43The whole situation itself is tense, so I understand.
03:46Yes.
03:47This killer's story began a world away a generation ago.
03:51I know that you had a very rough start in life.
03:54I did.
03:55Born in Hawaii, right, to a teenage mother who by her own accounting had issues.
04:01How do you think it shaped you?
04:03My parents were really good people, but they had addiction problems.
04:08By age five, she'd suffered sexual abuse.
04:11By 13, she was living on the street.
04:14For money, she turned to sex work.
04:16For stress, she turned to crystal meth.
04:20I got hooked up with some pimps when I was 14 and I was forced to make money for them.
04:31You know, I was sleeping with people at that point to put a roof over my head, you know, on
04:36a daily basis.
04:37Which came first, the drugs or the sex work?
04:39Well, I mean, they both kind of really just started hand in hand.
04:43They went together.
04:44But pretty much at the same time.
04:45By 15, she was pregnant.
04:47At 16, she was a teenage mother migrating from Hawaii to the mainland and settling in Kansas City, Missouri.
04:55Fast forward in 2014 timeframe, you were advertising on Backpage Escort Services, right?
05:02Yes.
05:03Was sex work your main source of income?
05:05It was my only source of income.
05:06I see.
05:07It was my only source of survival.
05:09You meet a successful businessman named Michael Hendricks, right?
05:13Mm-hmm.
05:13Was that on skipthegames.com?
05:15Mm-hmm.
05:15Yes, it was.
05:16It was on Valentine's Day.
05:17How much did you know about him?
05:19Nothing.
05:20He was just a client.
05:21He contacted me and said, hey, I've been looking at your ad and my garage door will be open.
05:25Here's my address.
05:27And that's just the way that I lived my life at the time.
05:31Michael Hendricks owned a thriving IT company and a 3,000 square foot home with plenty of space for his
05:38wife and three children.
05:39He also had a helicopter hanger in his backyard so he could enjoy his favorite hobby.
05:44He posted videos about it on his YouTube channel.
05:48Hey Internets, tomorrow I'm going on a repositioning flight.
05:51But Hendricks had another interest too.
05:54A secret sexual fetish with violence and killing.
05:58Did you know he was married with kids?
06:00There's a huge picture on the wall in his house of his wife and his children and himself.
06:05Was he kind of living a double life, family man by day, sex fiend by night?
06:11Yeah, I guess you could say that.
06:13And it was more just he had demons that he kept hidden from everyone.
06:21The two made an unlikely couple and a kind of Faustian bargain.
06:25From the record, it sounds like it started out as an escort client relationship.
06:30It did.
06:30But evolved more into maybe you could call like a sugar daddy relationship.
06:36A transactional.
06:37Very transactional, yes.
06:39Did he entice you with his money?
06:42It just felt like, like I deserved to be able to come out with a foot on top.
06:48All that work that I put in my whole life, selling myself for nothing.
06:52I didn't want to stop until I had a house, a car, a way to be okay, a way to
06:59support myself.
06:59And so he was providing those things.
07:02His money paid for your apartment.
07:04Paid for my house.
07:06Wore to that Mini Cooper.
07:07Cooper, yeah.
07:08Right.
07:09Employed you.
07:10He did employ me.
07:11Sounds like in name only.
07:12Yeah.
07:13And in return, you entertained his sexual desires.
07:18Which were disgusting and horrible, yes.
07:20Sounds like he was a sexual sadist.
07:22Yeah.
07:22Mm-hmm.
07:24In fact, he wore those perversions on his sleeve or actually on his back, right?
07:28On his back, yes.
07:29Tell me about his tattoos on his back.
07:31They were scary.
07:32The first time I ever seen them, I knew something was wrong.
07:36And I didn't let myself accept that, that it was not going to be okay.
07:43In the center of his back, there was a demon.
07:46Took up his entire back, basically.
07:48He had angels that were performing sexual acts on each other.
07:52He had, um, the demon was strangling an angel with a chain.
07:56Strangling an angel?
07:57Holding it up in the air while the chain was choking it.
08:01Bart Blyer.
08:03Was it obvious to you that he had some kind of fixation with violent sexual fantasy?
08:09It started to kind of become a little clear.
08:13And you yourself, did you find yourself in a position of indulging his dark, satanic fantasies?
08:21As an escort, yeah.
08:22Someone who's reaping the benefits of it.
08:24To keep the money flowing.
08:25Yeah.
08:26That's the job, right?
08:27Of the escort.
08:28To make them seem, there's a saying that a lot of escorts say, and it's a trick knows
08:33that they're a trick, but they don't want to feel tricked.
08:36But Ibarra's twisted role was about to become a violent reality.
08:42Role-playing dark fantasies is one thing, right?
08:47Mm-hmm.
08:47Carrying them out in reality is another.
08:51Hendrix searches online, what is the quickest way to kill a person with your bare hands?
08:56Were you aware that he was doing research?
09:03Do you have a boyfriend or anything like that?
09:05Mm-hmm.
09:0630-year-old escort Maggie Ibarra sits in a police station, a suspect in a terrible crime.
09:12Okay, what's his name?
09:13Michael Andrews.
09:14Okay.
09:15Oh, your boss is your boyfriend?
09:16Yeah.
09:17Okay.
09:18Her boss and boyfriend is actually her sugar daddy, a man who pays her bills in exchange
09:23for sex, but not just any kind.
09:27Did you know he was searching violent porn?
09:30I was aware.
09:32Hendrix's internet searches reveal a dangerous fixation with violence and murder, and Maggie
09:38Ibarra knew his secret.
09:40He was searching terms like strangle, snuff porn, death, murder.
09:45I was aware of that.
09:46That was all clear to you.
09:48Yeah.
09:48Mm-hmm.
09:49But Michael's not the first person that I've encountered in my life that has been like
09:52this.
09:54It's not the first time that I've had to put my morals aside to do a job that I was
10:00forced
10:01to do in my mind.
10:02You two shared love notes.
10:05Yeah.
10:05He's the archangel and you're the demon princess.
10:08Fallen angel.
10:09He called me Eloah, and she was a fallen angel that fell from heaven along with Satan.
10:15The angel Eloah, from a 200-year-old French poem, falls in love with Lucifer.
10:21But instead of redeeming him, he drags her into hell.
10:26It strikes me that Ibarra wants me to see her as a fallen angel.
10:30Less evil and less culpable than Hendrix.
10:33But is that just her spin?
10:36Those are all satanic references.
10:38I guess, yeah.
10:39You called him Daddy Satan.
10:40Yes.
10:41Daddy Satan.
10:42Yeah.
10:43Who came up with that?
10:45I probably did.
10:46He liked that?
10:47He did.
10:48Yeah.
10:48Sent me money for sure.
10:50At trial, your lawyer tried to argue that Hendrix was effectively controlling you.
10:55And that you went along with it out of fear and financial need.
11:00Is that really true?
11:01Or were you more part of it than that suggests, Maggie?
11:05It just became my life at that point.
11:07And I just thought, well, if this is how my life is going to end, then I guess this is
11:11it.
11:12You know?
11:14At that point, I accepted everything that was happening.
11:18Role playing dark fantasies is one thing.
11:22Mm-hmm.
11:22Right?
11:23Carrying them out in reality is another.
11:27Right?
11:28Which did you think was going on?
11:30I never thought it was actually going to happen.
11:32He talked about it a lot though, right?
11:34So did other people that I was with.
11:36It was never something that I thought would actually...
11:38Look at his life.
11:39Look at everything he had.
11:41You know?
11:42I never thought it was actually going to happen.
11:46Six months into their relationship, Hendrix's sadistic obsession seemed to intensify.
11:51And his fallen angel says she convincingly played right along.
11:56September 2020, Hendrix searches online the question,
12:00What is the quickest way to kill a person with your bare hands?
12:05Were you aware that he was, sounds like, doing research?
12:08Mm-hmm.
12:09You were?
12:10Mm-hmm.
12:11Did you talk to him about that?
12:12It wasn't new. I mean, it was nothing new.
12:14Did you talk to him about that?
12:16He talked to me about a lot of things, especially during intercourse.
12:20It was something he liked to talk about.
12:22So you knew he was fantasizing about killing someone in sex?
12:27From the very first day I met him.
12:28From the first day?
12:29From basically the first day I met him.
12:31First, it started as tying up.
12:32Then it started as strangulation.
12:35Then it started as other things.
12:37It just progressed.
12:38You were, what, entertaining it, managing it?
12:42Entertaining it.
12:43Feeding it?
12:43Entertaining it.
12:44Not so much feeding it, just entertaining it.
12:47Mm-hmm.
12:47Because, really, it still made me uncomfortable because he was a little more extreme than anyone
12:54that I've ever had an experience with before.
12:57Did you come to enjoy and indulge in these ideas yourself?
13:02I guess, in a way, I did, because it made him happy.
13:07And then, in return, I gained monetarily.
13:10For the money, Ibarra says, she drifted deeper into Hendrik's darkness and agreed to find other
13:16women to bring into their illicit sex life.
13:19Did he ask you to bring other women into sex with him?
13:23It was brought up.
13:26Um, but at that time in my life, that's what my life consisted of.
13:32With all clients.
13:34Threesomes was something that I just did all the time.
13:37Kenzie Aubrey was one of them.
13:39Yes, she was.
13:41Kenzie Aubrey had recently moved to Kansas City away from her family in Texas.
13:46Like Ibarra, she struggled with addiction.
13:49How did you first meet her?
13:51She was my neighbor.
13:51She was your neighbor turned friend?
13:54Yes.
13:55Turned lover?
13:56Yes.
13:56It sounds like from her text that she fell for you.
14:00Trusted you?
14:01Mm-hmm.
14:02Mm-hmm.
14:02How did you feel about her?
14:04She was a good person.
14:07She was a good person in a bad situation.
14:10Genuine friends?
14:12Genuine friendships?
14:13I don't think I had any genuine friendships when I was on crystal meth and I was a prostitute.
14:17She, she loved you.
14:19Did you love her?
14:21I don't think I even love myself.
14:23Did Michael ask you to find women like her who were vulnerable, isolated, drug addicted?
14:32I think it turned them on.
14:36Michael Hendricks was straddling a double life.
14:39By day, he played the dutiful husband and father.
14:43But by night, he was consumed with sadistic sex and death.
14:47And in October, 2020, he was nearing a breaking point.
14:51He's researching information about cell phone tracking and tracing evidence.
14:57Did you know about that?
14:59Mm-mm.
14:59You didn't know about that?
15:01Mm-mm.
15:01There were a few things on the trial that I did not know about.
15:04A few days later, he searches the term necrophilia, the practice of sexually defiling a corpse.
15:11Was that something that he had shared to you?
15:13I mean, over time, you must have picked up on these things, right?
15:16Yeah.
15:17That's five days before Kenzie's murder.
15:20Sounds like his snuff porn habit is intensifying.
15:25You reach out to Kenzie to make plans again.
15:27Was that your initiative or his?
15:30So, Kenzie actually contacted me that day
15:32and told me that she had just gotten into a fight with the woman that she lived with.
15:38And so I had Michael send her an Uber to my house.
15:41And what's the plan at that point?
15:44For me and her to just get high, I guess.
15:46He wasn't supposed to be part of that?
15:48The next day, he was gonna come over, yeah.
15:50Did she know that?
15:51Um, she did, actually. She knew that.
15:54She was there really for you.
15:56Yeah.
15:56Right?
15:57Mm-hmm.
15:58But she knew that he was gonna join you, too, at some point?
16:01Mm-hmm.
16:01She was okay with it.
16:02We've had sexual experiences several times before.
16:04All right.
16:05So it was nothing out of the ordinary.
16:08He's, around that time, searching walmart.com for barbed wire.
16:13I was not aware of that.
16:16I don't even think they said that in trial.
16:17It's in the case record.
16:19It sounded like the tattoo on his back of the woman entwined in barbed wire.
16:24That's what it sounds like, yeah.
16:26Was barbed wire part of the plan for Kenzie that night?
16:31Mm-mm.
16:32What time did Michael arrive on the scene?
16:34The next morning, probably at 8 o'clock in the morning.
16:378 o'clock in the morning.
16:38Kenzie was expecting him?
16:40Mm-hmm.
16:41We both were.
16:41When did the three-way sex start?
16:44Probably right after he got there.
16:47Kenzie and I had been up all night smoking meth out of a bong in my bathroom.
16:51What state was Michael in?
16:53What state of mind?
16:54Was he sober?
16:55Nothing.
16:56Yeah, nothing out of the ordinary.
17:00Just normal attitude.
17:02So the three of you were in bed together?
17:06The record suggested there was a ball gag in her mouth.
17:10No.
17:11Not true?
17:11No.
17:12Were there any other restraints used on her?
17:15No.
17:16None at all?
17:17Mm-mm.
17:17And so you're in bed, the three of you, having sex.
17:22It's consensual at that point, you say?
17:24Yes.
17:26It's always, always consensual.
17:28But that was about to change in an instant.
17:32So this brings us to the moment of truth, right?
17:36Maggie, to the best of your recollection, tell me what happened that morning.
17:46October 7, 2020.
17:49Kenzie Aubrey went to spend the night with a woman she trusted and cared for.
17:53But by morning, she was in the throes of a dangerous threesome.
17:58Michael and Kenzie were engaging in sex.
18:01She was on top of him.
18:03And she had her hands around his throat.
18:06He liked that kind of stuff, you know, sometimes.
18:08And, um, she was just lightly.
18:13And she was on top of him.
18:15And, um...
18:16What were you doing?
18:17I was lying next to them.
18:18And I was about to start engaging.
18:20But I noticed they were just engaging with each other.
18:23So he got on top of her and almost immediately put his hands around her throat.
18:31And, uh, just started squeezing her neck.
18:37She tapped his arm two times.
18:39Did you know she was trying to tell him to stop?
18:43By, um, by that time, uh, I kind of froze.
18:46And, um, I feel nothing but, um, shame and guilt for the way that my actions played out that morning.
18:55I was so high.
18:58And I didn't really know what to do.
19:01But you knew what was happening.
19:03Yes.
19:04Was he different?
19:05Did he seem different to you?
19:07Um, Michael's demeanor never changed at one time.
19:10He never became angry.
19:12He never, um, changed his demeanor at all.
19:20He was calm.
19:22The entire time.
19:24Squeezing.
19:24Squeezing her neck.
19:24Yes.
19:25She must have been terrified at some point when he wouldn't stop.
19:29I know, I know I was when he did that to me.
19:30Um, when we first met, he was strong.
19:35I ended up with blood clots in my eyes.
19:39And I lost consciousness within four seconds.
19:44Were you aware that, that he was going in that direction with Kenzie in that moment?
19:49In that moment.
19:50You were?
19:51Yeah.
19:52Did you try and stop him?
19:53No.
19:55Did she turn to you for help?
19:58No.
19:59Could you tell she was terrified?
20:00Just in that moment, I knew that it was too late.
20:05He's not going to stop?
20:06No.
20:08Yes.
20:08Went on for four minutes?
20:11To say the least, yes.
20:13At least four minutes.
20:14And you couldn't?
20:17At that point, what am I supposed to do?
20:20Well.
20:21At that point, he's hurt her, he's hurt her bad.
20:26I know what it feels like to have his hands around my throat.
20:29She's struggling to breathe?
20:31Is she saying anything?
20:33Can she talk?
20:33No.
20:34What are her eyes saying?
20:36I didn't look at her eyes.
20:38I looked away from the situation at that point.
20:40You didn't speak to her?
20:41I started pacing the room.
20:42You didn't speak to her?
20:43Or him?
20:44I don't remember what I said, but I did say something, yes.
20:47To her?
20:47I was angry.
20:48I was mad.
20:49To her?
20:50I don't remember.
20:51Did you see the moment that life left her body?
20:55Was she fighting for life?
20:57Pleading for her life?
20:59It happened so fast that there was no pleading.
21:02There was no...
21:03Four minutes is not so fast.
21:04I believe that she lost consciousness pretty quickly.
21:07That's a long four minutes.
21:10What time was Kenzie killed?
21:13Probably like 8.30, 8.20.
21:15Wow.
21:1720 minutes after you got there, she's dead.
21:20Yeah.
21:21Now you have the body of your so-called friend in your home, in your bed.
21:28Yes.
21:29Did you realize what you'd just become?
21:33Yeah.
21:34What were you thinking?
21:35Very much so.
21:37My life was over.
21:39What's the conversation between you and Michael now?
21:42There was none.
21:43That's the scary part about it.
21:47He never lost his composure.
21:48Did you lose yours?
21:50I did.
21:50I went into the bathroom and I did a shot of meth immediately.
21:53He came in and asked if I was okay.
21:56I didn't really know what to make of anything, so I just told him I was fine.
21:59I was okay, I'm good.
22:00Just trying to figure out what to do at that point.
22:05I was panicking.
22:07He was calm.
22:08Did you confront him?
22:09Probably not.
22:10And what's the conversation about what to do next?
22:12Cover-up started immediately.
22:15Ibarra and her daddy Satan then climbed aboard his helicopter and plotted a crazed cover-up by land, sea, and
22:23air.
22:23He tried to dispose of the body.
22:25But you understand that when you say he, you really should be saying we.
22:35Oh, wow.
22:37I had a beautiful daughter, Kenzie Renee Aubrey.
22:42The love of my life.
22:45Here is a picture of my baby girl.
22:51And she had beautiful eyes, just sparkling.
22:55Loved her little piercings.
22:58And the whole picture just tells the story of her and her rainbow world.
23:06She loved rainbows.
23:09And just a beautiful girl.
23:16Beautiful baby girl.
23:19Cindy Aubrey's beloved daughter, Kenzie, had grown into a trusting but troubled soul.
23:25At 32, struggling with addiction and rocky relationships, Kenzie Aubrey found herself in a tough part of Kansas City, far
23:33from her hometown in Texas.
23:35I remember getting a phone call from Kansas City Police saying, your daughter's not in trouble, but she's hanging with
23:43some bad people, the wrong people.
23:46Then, one day in October, 2020, she texted her mother for the last time and vanished.
23:52She said, talk to you later, and I love you.
23:58And that was it.
24:00I never got another text, another phone call, nothing.
24:05And that was October 7th.
24:07She dropped off the grid.
24:09Got towards Thanksgiving and Christmas, no word.
24:13That's when I put in my first misimpression report.
24:17Months passed with no trace of Kenzie.
24:20Police had no clue, and at that point, no evidence of foul play.
24:25It was ma'am, she's 32.
24:29And, you know, we, she's old enough to be on her own, and if she didn't want to contact her,
24:34she didn't have to.
24:35My daughter would have never gone as long as we went through and not contacted me.
24:42So I knew it was going to be bad.
24:45Missing posters went up around town.
24:47Kenzie's friends discovered the name of the last person seen with her alive,
24:51and told Cindy Aubrey to call police in Independence, Missouri.
24:56The whole time, all her friends down here were going through the internet,
25:01and they called and said, you need to get a hold of Independence City,
25:05and mentioned the name, Maggie Ybarra.
25:11I had a freezer in my basement.
25:13So the cover-up starts immediately.
25:15The cover-up started immediately.
25:16Maggie Ybarra knew exactly what had happened and where.
25:20She and her sadistic partner, Michael Hendricks, murdered the young woman during sex in their bedroom lair.
25:27He took her body, he carried her to the basement, and put her in the freezer.
25:33And then they matter-of-factly started to cover their tracks.
25:36And then continued to get dressed, answered a business call while getting dressed, and went to work.
25:45And told me that he'll be back to take care of the problem.
25:48He'll be back to take care of the problem.
25:50That's how he put it.
25:51So, what did you do that day?
25:53I sat on my couch in my living room.
25:55Smoked meth.
25:57All day.
25:58Just sat there.
26:00Literally all day.
26:01And what was he going to do about the quote-unquote problem?
26:05Get a U-Haul the next day.
26:06And take her to his property.
26:09Out of my house.
26:10And to his property.
26:11He took the freezer from your place to his place.
26:14With the body in it.
26:15Yes, sir.
26:16By himself?
26:17I helped him.
26:18You helped him carry the freezer with Lindsay's body in it.
26:20I had to.
26:21Yeah.
26:21Into the U-Haul.
26:22Yes, sir.
26:23And then you rode with him back to his place.
26:25Mm-hmm.
26:26At that point, I had really no choice if I wanted to.
26:31Cover it up.
26:32Yeah.
26:32There was a plan involving his helicopter.
26:36Right?
26:37To dispose of the body.
26:38Mm-hmm.
26:38Were you a part of that?
26:40I rode with him that day.
26:41Mm-hmm.
26:41It's not something that I shared.
26:44He picked me up at the Lee's Summit Airport.
26:46He said he was taking her to dispose of her body.
26:49At that point, he had already dismembered her body.
26:53And she was in the helicopter when he got to the airport.
26:59So you both loaded, what, containers?
27:01No, they were already loaded.
27:02I didn't...
27:03They were already loaded into...
27:04Yeah, I didn't do anything with...
27:06Anything but just get in the helicopter.
27:08Right.
27:08Knowing that she was in there.
27:10Mm-hmm.
27:11Yes.
27:11Okay.
27:12And...
27:12So he's flying?
27:14Yes.
27:14Flying to...
27:15Above a sandbar?
27:17To a sandbar, yes.
27:18On the Missouri River.
27:19And then he tried to dispose of the body, which I guess didn't work.
27:23And the whole time that he's doing this, I'm in the helicopter.
27:25I just wanted to know where this was happening.
27:28So you guys dumped the containers out?
27:31We landed.
27:32You landed, I see.
27:33He carried one piece to the water and I saw him following it down the river because it
27:43wasn't going to sink.
27:44And I'm watching him in the helicopter as he's like panicking and brings it back.
27:49What happens next?
27:50He brings it back to the helicopter and we took off back to his property.
27:54His kids were about to be home.
27:56That was his urgency that afternoon was to get home before the kids got off the bus.
28:00And now he's bringing the containers back to his home?
28:04He was on the phone in the helicopter with his neighbor asking for a backhoe.
28:09So at that point I kind of knew what the next plan was.
28:14But you understand that when you say he, you really should be saying we because you're
28:19now part and parcel of it.
28:21Yeah.
28:21Yes.
28:22Did you ever consider going to the authorities?
28:26Of course I did.
28:27And?
28:28I guess I just became selfish with wanting to live every moment still of my life that
28:36I could.
28:37Because it was good.
28:39It was still, despite what happened, the life that I had been trying to live for so
28:45many years.
28:46And I guess I just didn't want to give it up.
28:49Sure.
28:50But now, in exchange, you not only have to entertain him, but you have to live with what
28:59you've done.
29:00Murder.
29:00Right?
29:01Did you think you could live with it?
29:03For a while I did.
29:05Of course, because I'm still on drugs at that time.
29:09So for a while I kind of did feel like I just don't say anything.
29:13You didn't seem to have trouble living with it until you got caught though.
29:17Of course not.
29:18In fact, you were trying not to get caught.
29:19You know, I think that's just the mindset of anyone that does something bad.
29:22If I just don't say anything to anyone, it'll go away.
29:24I think I can move past this.
29:27Hendricks clearly had some kind of death sex fixation.
29:32Mm-hmm.
29:32There are all sorts of clinical terms for the desire to sexually torture and kill.
29:41Paraphilia, erotophomophilia, all terms for basically sadistic sexual homicide.
29:47But Maggie, the big question is to what degree you were also in on that.
29:53You recruited her, even though you knew he was...
29:57Unsafe.
29:58...a violent pervert, right?
30:01With a death fetish.
30:02You told her to turn her phone off before she headed over to your place.
30:07Which, to me, ties back to his research on cell phone evidence and tracing.
30:15Looks bad.
30:16You knew Kenzie would come to be with you, right?
30:19Because it's almost like you're the bait to get Kenzie into his clutches.
30:24Your mother testified that you and Hendricks later, both of you, gleefully told her about the murder.
30:31And that while he strangled her to death, you said to her that you were screaming obscenities at Kenzie as
30:42she struggled to breathe.
30:45Hmm?
30:46And you did nothing to stop him.
30:48And when missing persons posters started going up around town, and Kenzie's family were pleading with the public for information,
30:56you were still consorting with him for months and months and months, trading love notes with Daddy Satan,
31:03and plotting to replace his wife, and depositing his Cash App transfers.
31:09These are all acts of volition, of commission on your part.
31:13Yes.
31:14And it strongly suggests, to me at least, from the record, that you and Michael may have planned the attack
31:21together, executed it together, covered it up together.
31:27Can you admit to that now?
31:29Yes.
31:31Yes.
31:31All true?
31:32Yes.
31:33The moment that it happened, I knew that there was no breaking apart from him that day that was not
31:39supposed to happen.
31:40Yes, we role-played and talked about it, but never in my mind did I think that it was going
31:50to happen that day.
31:51Even-
31:52So it was not a plan, but when it happened, what am I supposed to do with myself at that
31:58point?
31:59I didn't just wake up one day and just decide, hey, I want to hurt people, or hey, I want
32:03to ruin lives, or hey, I want to break these families apart.
32:07But my mindset was on the fact that I started living a life that I had wanted my whole life.
32:15My daughter came back into my life also at that time.
32:19Not really something that I would like to discuss.
32:22Until now, Ibarra sounds like she's bearing all.
32:25But there's more to this case.
32:27They showed me some pictures of a girl and told me they killed her.
32:37This is what Ibarra doesn't want to discuss.
32:40They told me where they buried her.
32:43The critical role played by her 13-year-old daughter in the murder case.
32:47Well, that's an integral part of this story.
32:50It is.
32:50You can't really talk honestly about what happened if you're not going to address that.
32:55Yeah.
32:55And Ibarra and Hendrik's shameful crimes against her own child.
33:00How much did you know about his history of pedophilia?
33:03It is something that he did share with me.
33:05You dress her in lingerie and let her get in bed with you and Michael.
33:11We were all laying in bed together and he started touching me.
33:18Are you a sadist?
33:28I just started building a relationship.
33:31And then she told me about her boyfriend.
33:35And I met her boyfriend.
33:37In April 2021, a brave 13-year-old girl known as Jane Doe sits down with a forensic psychologist and
33:45helps to solve the murder of a missing person.
34:04The body belonged to 32-year-old Kenzie Aubrey, who had been missing for nine months.
34:14The girl heard the nightmarish story directly from the killers, her estranged biological
34:20mother, Maggie Ibarra, and Ibarra's sugar daddy, Michael Hendricks.
34:28It happened when Ibarra invited the girl to spend the night with her and Hendricks, and
34:32showed the child photographs of their victim.
34:45The young witness had been removed from her mother's care at age 4 after evidence of abuse.
34:54She was 13 and in an adoptive home when Ibarra found her on social media.
35:00Ibarra says Michael Hendricks encouraged her to reconnect with the child.
35:04How much did you know about his history of pedophilia?
35:07I knew that he had.
35:09Did you know that he had once been investigated for sex with an underage?
35:14With a 14-year-old?
35:14You knew that?
35:15Mm-hmm.
35:16One of his...
35:17Something that he shared with me has.
35:18One of his online searches was, quote, how to find underage prostitutes.
35:24Do you know that?
35:24It's not surprising.
35:25How did he find out you had an estranged 13-year-old daughter?
35:30She was struggling with her situation in her adoptive home.
35:38So it was my opportunity to, you know, start a relationship with her again.
35:45She grew up in and out of foster care and mental hospitals.
35:49Yeah.
35:49By the time you reconnected with her, she was extremely traumatized and fragile and troubled.
35:55You knew that, right?
35:56Yeah.
35:57And yet, you brought her to meet a man you knew to be a sexual sadist.
36:04Why would you do that, Maggie?
36:05Only a percentage of the relationship that we had was negative.
36:08So he put on that charming guy, good dad persona.
36:14At first, you and Daddy Satan tell this fragile 13-year-old girl about murdering Kenzie during sex.
36:23Probably about seven months after it happened.
36:25I'm not sure.
36:26You show her gory pictures of Kenzie's body dismembered.
36:30Yeah, that happened.
36:31And then, much as they had done with Kenzie months before, Ibarra and Hendrix lured the child into their bed.
36:38She told me to try on, like, some lingerie.
36:43I feel comfortable getting dressed in front of someone I don't know, especially a man.
36:51And she said, well, don't, like, judge us.
36:55I mean, this is the way we are.
36:58And, like, it's nothing bad.
37:01I just didn't feel like hurting her feelings because I just met her.
37:05So I went to go show her boyfriend.
37:08And then I tried a little change, but she said, no, just sit in the bed.
37:12So I turned on something to watch.
37:15Something scary.
37:17And her boyfriend said, like, it turns him on to watch people die.
37:23You dress her in lingerie against her wishes and let her get in bed with you and Michael.
37:31Michael in between the two of you.
37:33And then you told her, don't judge us.
37:35It's not weird.
37:36It's just normal.
37:38We were all laying in the bed together.
37:39And I didn't want to be in the bed.
37:44They were just asking me if I wanted to know what it feels like.
37:49Because I was still a virgin.
37:50But I was like, I don't think it's right at all.
37:54These are acts of commission on your part.
37:57You can't blame on Michael Hendricks.
38:01Cruel, barbaric, sadistic acts of your own.
38:04Do you take responsibility for them?
38:06I will always take full responsibility for the mistakes.
38:09Are you a sadist?
38:11No, sir.
38:12Serving up your own child for grotesque, life-changing torment.
38:18Yeah.
38:18How do you account for that?
38:19There is no accounting for it.
38:21I always thought that I was a good person.
38:24And then I did meet Michael.
38:26And slowly over time, my morals and the things that I believe started to change.
38:33Being a drug addict didn't help.
38:36Ibarra was arrested and charged with child sex crimes.
38:39And she tried hard to discredit her traumatized daughter.
38:42She's dangerous.
38:44Okay, yeah.
38:45My daughter is dangerous.
38:47At the time, you acted fast to try and cover up those heinous crimes.
38:53I did, yes.
38:54You tried to manipulate and malign her.
38:57You told police she's a liar.
39:00She's promiscuous.
39:01I told lots of people that.
39:02She's a gangbanger.
39:04She's dangerous.
39:05Yeah.
39:06Was that all just to save your own hide?
39:08Of course it was.
39:09At her expense?
39:09Of course it was.
39:11I felt so much shame.
39:13I felt so much fear.
39:16In that moment, knowing how far everything has gotten.
39:20Of course it was.
39:22She told me I was lying.
39:23And she kept making me feel like I was lying.
39:26She kept telling me that I'm lying.
39:30She says you're gaslighting her.
39:32Yeah.
39:33She kept trying to confuse me.
39:35She told me I was on medicine.
39:37And she told me that I was mentally ill.
39:40Then you tried to get other people to convince her to say it was all a lie.
39:46My mother.
39:46Including your mother and your ex-boyfriend.
39:49Were you not concerned as a mother in that part of you that you say still knew right from wrong?
39:57Were you not concerned that all this would destroy that child?
40:01Of course.
40:01Forever?
40:02Of course.
40:03So then how do you explain it?
40:05I can't explain it.
40:06Just like all those people who abused me when I was a child.
40:09I can't explain it.
40:10I was that person in that moment.
40:12I don't know what came over me.
40:14I don't know what happened.
40:16And every day she'll tell me I'll end up like her because she was a prostitute.
40:21Okay.
40:22And she'll tell me like every day I'll end up like her.
40:24Also my body and stuff.
40:26But I really won't.
40:28And yeah, I told her several times.
40:31Not every day.
40:33She says every day.
40:34But they were just conversations.
40:36Normal conversations that I was having with my daughter.
40:38It doesn't sound like normal conversations.
40:40And I told her plenty of times that she is going down the same path and you're going to end
40:45up just like me one day if you don't stop.
40:47She said, my mom, she has like stuff, sexual stuff in her closet and she wants me to be a
40:54part of it.
40:55And every day she tells me I'll end up like her because she's a prostitute, but I really won't.
41:02And she's not.
41:04Following her own moral compass, Ibarra's daughter reported the crimes.
41:09They told me where they buried her.
41:11I don't, I don't know exactly where it is, but I know the area is high.
41:18And revealed the dark truth behind Kenzie Aubrey's disappearance.
41:23Buried beneath Hendrick's bedroom window.
41:26Ibarra's daughter is now an adult and herself a mother.
41:30She's studying to become a nurse and working to live down the painful past her mother is finally facing up
41:37to.
41:38She's doing good.
41:38She's trying everything that she can to break the cycle.
41:41I never once did not take responsibility for the things that I've done.
41:45But speaking to you today, I realize, you know, that I was a lot more responsible than, than what I
41:50want to see, you know.
41:53It's hard to accept.
41:54It is.
41:55I would want to go get her.
41:57I told her I would bring her home.
42:00Did I ever dream it would be like this?
42:02No.
42:03Cindy Aubrey credits Ibarra's daughter with bringing Kenzie home.
42:07I don't know that she would have ever been found if they wouldn't have done the digging that they did.
42:12And bringing her killers to justice.
42:16In court, an unusual bond formed between the mother of the victim and the daughter of the killer.
42:21I sat next to Maggie, Ybarra's daughter, who was 16 at the time, and her mother was right there, you
42:32know.
42:35Every once in a while, every once in a while, her mother would look back, and when I saw that,
42:39I would always make sure to put my hand on her daughter's leg, because I wanted her to see that
42:45you took mine.
42:47But I have your daughter right here, and I love her, and she's my angel.
42:53I was not going to be a mother in anger, because that's not what God wanted me to do.
43:01This is who they took from me.
43:07Beautiful baby girl.
43:10This whole ordeal has changed people's life, and that's what needs to continue.
43:17And letting people know that you can be a survivor.
