00:11it is a car to be proud of British engineer at the best down the road
00:18whizzing along it's lovely ain't she what a majestic old girl 1971 little Morris
00:24camper van there no matter what people say that you can't get away from the
00:28main purpose of converting a van like this is it doubled up as everyday
00:33transport so 1967 triumph there look at that 650 trying what a bonnie machine as
00:40well he actually went to buy a greenhouse came back with the greenhouse stacked in
00:46the pickle and this this motorcycle beside the greenhouse and that's that's the
00:49type of thing he used to do he just used to sniff them out don't know
00:52unbelievable Rayleigh the Matthewsons a dynasty of classic car auctioneers 55
01:03the joys of an auction most people will go to us out with something in mind but come
01:07away with something different the fun is the chase you just don't know what's on
01:14the end of the phone what are you gonna find when you open them doors this is a
01:17family's love affair with motors that have lived a life testing testing most
01:22people will buy a car because they can relate to it maybe a car that dad had
01:27a car you're selling dreams right here we go
01:40I'm the wrong way around mate got them the wrong way around that was going that one
01:46it's another day of comings and goings and with the workers hard at it Derek's found the perfect
01:52excuse to escape tempting him today a 60-year-old Alvis TE 21 perfectly frank I've always wanted one
02:02they're like an upmarket mark 2 Jag if you like or you know maybe a slightly down market or less
02:10desirable Aston Martin they're that in that ilk
02:18I've sold a few cars in my time I wish I'd got a pound for everyone I'd be living somewhere
02:23warm
02:24over in Staffordshire Martin Anker has returned to his salesman's roots when you're showing
02:31somebody around a motor car they always want to go to the driver's door they want to sit in the
02:35car
02:35you keep them away from that as long as possible Martin sold cars for 60 years now he's doing a
02:42job
02:42on his 1965 Alvis beautifully designed vehicle I have added since I've owned the car the chrome
02:50wire wheels it's had the steel wire wheels but I think the chrome wire wheels give it a little bit
02:54more character the car is fitted with a sunshine roof we have two very nice wide easy access doors
03:08presenting a very smart interior Duke of Edinburgh owned an Alvis TE convertible come on Alfie he thinks he's going
03:18out for the day
03:20nice twin exhaust pipes but the back of the round of car again very stylish this is in my opinion
03:26anyway I'm biased I suppose we're now getting to the exciting part
03:31you've shown the person the benefits of the motor car as you've taken them around and the styling of the
03:37car and the reasons why things are done
03:39um they're now very anxious to get into the driving seat so you've now got that person basically in your
03:47hand you can control what they want to do
03:56we've got a beautiful Walnut dashboard um all the instruments there you've got rev counter speedometer oil pressure gauge water
04:05temperature gauge fuel gauge etc all the necessary equipment you need it's subtle stylish I recommend you go and buy
04:14one this is the ideal car for you have you bought your checkbook
04:24it'll be a wrench for martin to sell the car which was left in by his late stepfather douglas
04:31her name is the duchess douglas always described always take the duchess out today so you know it is a
04:40member of the family but time has to come when it's got to go sadly
04:47and of course any prospective buyer would like to see the engine
04:53can't remember where the body releases
04:58how long you had it for
05:0130 bloody years
05:05I'm just sat in the seat put my hands straight on it
05:17was it worth the way
05:18of course
05:21because you never have to open the bonnet of hours
05:23it's such a wonderful reliable car
05:25so that's the reason
05:28oh well there we are
05:30beautiful
05:31three litre
05:32six cylinder
05:34hourless engine lovely straight 130 odd brake horse engine
05:40twin s show carburetors
05:41all the equipment that you require for a very very nice motor car
05:45with four wheeled
05:48don't knock disc brakes
05:49we'll drive quickly
05:50we'll stop quickly
05:54sadly I shed a few tears
05:56talking to her in the workshops
05:58but she's going to have to go
06:00somebody else will enjoy that motor car
06:03and continue with it
06:04because it is a car to be proud of
06:08it goes British engineering at the best
06:20got back
06:21hang on a minute
06:22check front of the lorry
06:26ok we're alright
06:27we've still got a bonnet and a grill
06:28and that
06:30he's alright
06:32it looks like Charlie's getting the hang of this collection
06:35lark
06:35hang on
06:36hang on
06:36hang on
06:37hang on
06:40look at that
06:41that's best bit
06:42look at that
06:45bumpers safer than car
06:46I remember when his granddad used to come in
06:48he used to run out
06:49see how many clicks he could get
06:50to be fair
06:52the tight
06:52the tight
06:53the tight lad
06:55he's picked up a 1963 mark 1 Ford Cortina deluxe
06:59that's been stored in a Melton Mowbray lockup
07:02for a decade
07:03hey she's a level old car Charlie
07:06I think it's a straight ginning old thing
07:08a two door Cortina
07:10obviously you don't see them on every street corner do you
07:13so I think it's kept really really well
07:16obviously there's bits round it
07:17but you can see where it's being damp look
07:19cross bottom of the door and that
07:20so to be fair I think he's caught it about at the right time
07:23if it'd have been in there another 10 years
07:25then it may be a different story wouldn't it
07:28gives a shove
07:34that's it
07:35that'll do
07:45oh me and Amy are on top of the job of bike collections now aren't we
07:48yeah
07:48yeah
07:49in and out
07:49don't even know where we've been
07:50it's another beautiful day in Yorkshire
07:54but that won't deter Matthewson's top motorcycle sibling collection team
08:00we are going to Bishop Auckland for quite a varied collection of bikes I'm led to believe
08:06AJFC so a nice variant of different motorbikes that should be good
08:09so yeah that should be a good one
08:11hopefully
08:12as long as Amy keeps me right on the mats
08:15while the Matthewsons risk a soaking
08:18see you soon
08:19see you later
08:2060 miles away in County Durham
08:22the weather's taken a turn for the better
08:25and the remnants of a 20 strong motorbike collection
08:28are waiting to be picked up
08:30it's part of his collections
08:31that some of the motorbikes have already been sold
08:34and this is we have five left
08:37four here
08:37and one up in his motorbike shed
08:41Nigel Henderson is moving on the last of his dad's
08:44bikes and cars
08:45Alan died three years ago
08:48and by all accounts loved a bargain
08:55so that particular one
08:56I remember one day he went to buy a seat for it
09:01and came back with two cars
09:03and no seat
09:04that's the sort of thing he would do
09:08another time he went to get the seat for it
09:10and came back with another two motorbikes
09:12so everything was a project
09:15so in the summer months
09:16he used to mess on with his cars
09:19and his vintage pick up
09:21and in the winter months
09:22he would lock himself away in his motorbike shed
09:26and do his motorbikes up
09:28so everything was an ongoing project
09:31some taken absolutely years
09:32amongst the hall
09:34there's a Royal Enfield in bits
09:36a pair of Triumphs
09:37and a 1960 AJS 250
09:40he actually went to buy a greenhouse
09:43came back with the greenhouse
09:45stacked in the pick up
09:46and this motorcycle beside the greenhouse
09:49and that's the type of thing he used to do
09:51he just used to sniff them out
09:53they're not unbelievable really
09:55it's a similar story with the 1965 Norton
09:59so he'd only gone for the paper
10:01and then the next thing you know
10:03this arrives
10:04daughters Alison and Fiona
10:06have seen it all before
10:08all these bikes here
10:10he used to share with people
10:13and Deb would always have to take them
10:14to show his bikes and his cars
10:17and that wasn't
10:18he wasn't boasting
10:19he always had a story to tell them
10:21he had a love for life
10:22he absolutely loved life
10:25every morning he would get up
10:27and he'd be looking for another project
10:29and something else to do
10:30also going to the auction at a later date
10:33are a couple of Mercs
10:34an F-Reg SEL
10:36and a 1967 2.8 litre
10:40six cylinder pagoda
10:42this was his pride and joy
10:44he's had it nearly 50 years
10:47probably been out in all that time
10:49twice in the rain
10:50on a Sunday
10:50he would go up to Barnard Castle
10:53about 15 miles away
10:54get an ice cream
10:55sit and look at it
10:56sit on the bench
10:57look at his car
10:58drive it back home
10:59he'd be on his hands and knees
11:01and he'd be shoe polishing
11:03everybody back in the day
11:05would shoe polish the tyres
11:06like this
11:07but he'd be laid on his back
11:08doing it inside
11:09an absolute fanatic
11:12absolutely loved it
11:15initially we didn't want to sell anything
11:17and I wanted to keep everything
11:19you know
11:20but
11:21there's only so much stuff
11:23you can keep
11:23isn't there
11:24and if the next chapter's
11:25as good as the chapters before
11:28we're on to a winner
11:29yeah
11:49now Martin lovely to see you
11:51likewise

12:08to pick up Martin Anker's
12:1060 year old Alvis
12:11but as always
12:13he's tempted by
12:14what else might be on offer
12:16I've got a BMC car in there
12:18that don't leak oil
12:20really
12:20well you drained it out
12:22have you
12:22well it's a Morris Thousand
12:24I reckon it's the only one
12:25in bloody prison
12:26it is the only one
12:27in captivity
12:27well exactly
12:28I can assure you
12:29yeah
12:30nice of it
12:31yeah
12:32what do you reckon
12:33that's worth
12:33hmm
12:35got a soft spot for them
12:36I think they're great
12:37like you know
12:38and a nice one like that
12:39would do 10 grand
12:40wouldn't it
12:40yeah
12:40but eyes are soon
12:41back on the main attraction
12:43a 1965 Alvis TE

13:06yeah
13:07no I forgot it's got a ZF
13:10nice innit
13:11if I hadn't been an Aston man
13:13I'd have had one of these
13:15alright we won't mess about
13:17what do you reckon
13:18I should put as a reserve price on that
13:21ooh you won't like this
13:25all I can tell you
13:26is what I know it's worth
13:27what do you reckon it's worth
13:2920 grand
13:31what you put on it
13:32it's entirely up to you
13:33but
13:34if it went for 20 Derek
13:36I'd be satisfied
13:37hmm
13:39yeah
13:39sits money innit
13:40yep
13:41and if somebody wants to give me
13:4230k for the number plate
13:44they can buy it as well
13:45I thought they'd put it more than that
13:47to be honest
13:47I think that's value for money
13:50nice car
13:51yeah it's alright
13:52yeah
13:52it's um
13:53you've got to make allowances for an Alvis
13:55you have
13:56because there's so many poor ones out there
13:59that when you come across a nice one
14:00it's a bit of a novelty
14:01I mean
14:02it's not
14:02a Minter
14:04not a Concourse
14:04but it's pretty good
14:07steeped in history mate
14:08yeah

14:10I'm sorry
14:11I'm sad to see it go

14:14yeah
14:15I know where you're coming from
14:16I've loved this car
14:17it's been a super car
14:19you know I've had
14:20hundreds of cars
14:22in my lifetime
14:23in a motor train
14:24and I've never been emotional about a mate a car before
14:27no
14:27no
14:28oh my god

14:58you cannot beat it
15:00you've got to go to somebody
15:01that will love that car
15:02because it's
15:03well you've just driven it
15:04and I think you've enjoyed it
15:08go on Derek
15:09don't prolong the agony
15:12bye baby
15:20and I could drive it
15:21yeah
15:22yeah
15:22not bad
15:27the old Cortina
15:28still badged as a console
15:30yeah they had that sort of crossover period
15:32didn't they
15:33yeah I know funny isn't it
15:34yeah Ford console
15:35before they went full bore Cortina
15:38lurking in the showroom
15:39the dusty Ford
15:41that Charlie brought in
15:42from Melton Mowbray
15:43the appeal of that is what
15:45the amount of doors it's got
15:47or the amount of doors it hasn't got
15:49it's not great
15:51bless her
15:51but she's so genuine
15:52she's been in the garage for
15:5330 odd years or something
15:54couldn't it
15:55I was lucky enough to have
15:56a Lotus Cortina mark one
15:58and
15:59I made the decision to sell it
16:00yeah
16:01I lost a little bit on that one of mine
16:03just proved you can't win on everything
16:04they were achieving
16:05in excess of 50,000 at one point
16:0840-ish now
16:10they all want two doors
16:12four door
16:13half the price
16:14more equals less
16:16I know she's got some
16:17paint issues and bits and pieces
16:19they get that
16:19but
16:19little lump there
16:21look
16:21little sweetie
16:22I think that car will achieve
16:24somewhere between
16:26three and a half and four thousand pound
16:28which seems incredibly good value to me
16:31yeah
16:32but if it was a four door
16:34couple of grand for a four door
16:36and if you were talking Lotus Twin Cam
16:39ah
16:40yeah
16:40yeah
16:41a Lotus Twin Cam
16:42in that condition there
16:43wanting a bit of work
16:43I still
16:44yeah
16:44it'll still push
16:4530 grand
16:47crazy isn't it really
16:53Ford Cortina Deluxe
16:55there we are
16:55look
16:55two door Cortina
16:57that's the one that
16:58ah
16:58yeah
16:59I picked it up
17:00been stood for about 20 I believe
17:02but 10
17:03in the lock up
17:04that I got it out of
17:05so
17:05nice early
17:06two door Cortina
17:08look
17:08we've got 3,500 pounds
17:09and we're off
17:10it's been stood in a nice dry garage
17:12which is the best thing
17:13at 3,700 pounds
17:15here with me
17:153,800
17:16it will make a car
17:18it should do more money than that really
17:19we will try
17:21at 3,900
17:22I should think so
17:23at 4,000 pounds then
17:24at 4,000
17:264,1
17:264,2
17:27at 4,300
17:29still provisional
17:30but we will try
17:31provisional
17:32Norfolk at 4,300
17:34I wasn't far
17:35I don't quite know
17:38whether it was over reserved
17:39it was all the way
17:40let's put it that way
17:41and yeah
17:42they had a 5,000 pound reserve
17:45and the best bidder
17:46the day I could get
17:47was 4,300
17:48which has been accepted
17:49so right decision
17:51rightly so
17:52yes I think that's its money
17:53simple as that
17:54so away it goes
18:09there we go
18:09look
18:11do do do do do
18:12oh blimey
18:14oh he likes his mercs
18:16there you go
18:16you all right
18:17you all right
18:18yeah yeah
18:19nice to meet you
18:20Nigel yeah
18:21nice to meet you Jack
18:23Jack and Amy
18:23have made it to
18:24County Durham
18:25to pick up the
18:26Henderson family's
18:27motorbikes
18:28oh wow
18:29you've got a fair
18:30collection of its
18:30and pieces
18:31haven't you Nigel
18:31he had a good
18:32collection
18:33there's a few
18:34gone now
18:34but this is what
18:36we've got left
18:37these were all his
18:38then were they
18:38yeah he had a few
18:40more but we've
18:41you know we've
18:41sold them
18:42and then there's
18:42another one in
18:43bits that he's
18:44been doing up
18:45for the last
18:4618 years
18:48everything's
18:49everything's a
18:49long-term project
18:51yeah that's it
18:52you think do I
18:52spend the money
18:53on restoring that
18:54or do I go and
18:55buy another one
18:56to go with it
18:57yeah so that's
18:59that's the story
18:59I know
19:00where'd you stop
19:00the bike market
19:02is a bit low at
19:02the moment
19:03yeah
19:04it's certainly a
19:04buyer's market
19:05but it has sort of
19:06increased to be fair
19:07they did really die
19:08off for a couple of
19:09months but I suppose
19:09the sun's out now
19:10isn't it
19:10that's right
19:11so obviously we'll
19:13try our best for you
19:13little butcher's bike
19:15I'll sneak in first
19:16in the corner
19:16look this is clean
19:17isn't it
19:17needs finishing off
19:18a nice little bike
19:20isn't it
19:20these sell well
19:21yeah grandad
19:22buys them a lot
19:23as well are you
19:28I feel that he's
19:30with us
19:31watching these
19:31bikes go
19:33nine times out
19:34of ten
19:34I'd say us
19:35office girls
19:36the rest of them
19:36don't really get out
19:37but no it's just
19:39nice to see
19:39where they actually
19:40come from
19:41and the story
19:42behind them
19:43and then obviously
19:43we see the other
19:44side of it as well
19:45after they've sold
19:46and where they're
19:47going to
19:48I'm going to have
19:49to start taking
19:49all the girls
19:50out with me
19:50you're going to
19:51have to do one
19:51at a time
19:52I'm going to have
19:52to just keep
19:53changing passengers
19:54every month
19:55aren't I
19:55and then the ones
19:56that give you
19:57the wrong direction
19:57don't take them
19:58again
20:02thank you very much
20:05thank you
20:06safe journey home
20:07thanks bye
20:27the sun's shining
20:29and North Yorkshire's
20:31looking its best
20:33the good weather
20:34has also brought
20:35the browsers out
20:36and Derek's
20:37honed in on a
20:37vehicle that for
20:39around eight grand
20:40has got holidays
20:41written all over it
20:44here we have
20:45basically
20:46it's an Austin A60
20:47van
20:48bagged as a Morris
20:49which is fine
20:50it's 71, 72
20:52as we can see
20:53it's a two berth
20:54caravanet conversion
20:56it tickles me a bit
20:57really when you
20:58when you talk to
20:58people and they say
20:59I'm going to have
21:00one of them new
21:01style pop-up roofs
21:02and fit it into
21:03me day van
21:04for argument's sake
21:05and I have to laugh
21:06because here we are
21:071970
21:09and basically
21:10the same thing
21:11but better
21:12so it's not a pop-up roof
21:14it's an elevating roof
21:16this was the era
21:17when Britain's
21:18post-war workers
21:19had spare time
21:21and cash to splash
21:22van makers like
21:24Bedford and Commer
21:25tapped into that
21:26as the country
21:27had its first
21:28camper van moment
21:29full height
21:30means you can
21:31stand up of course
21:31both ends
21:32rather than just
21:33one end
21:34no matter what
21:34people say
21:35you can't get away
21:36from the main purpose
21:37of converting
21:39a van like this
21:40is it doubled up
21:41as everyday transport
21:43and with a top-down
21:44it went into
21:45an everyday garage
21:46that's the big advantage
21:58oh dear
21:58oh dear
21:59no
22:00it'd be like
22:00something out of
22:01carry-on camping
22:01wouldn't it
22:02pulling up on the
22:02campsite with that
22:04there's a little rail
22:05look you can hang
22:06your tea towel on it
22:07to dry when you've
22:08washed up
22:09what is that Paul
22:10that 1971 Morris
22:11oh lovely innit
22:12an A60
22:13is it
22:14is it lovely
22:15yeah
22:16oh right
22:17early camper innit
22:18lovely
22:20lovely
22:21it's uh
22:21yeah
22:22no you're not
22:23seeing it
22:23you know
22:24I think she might
22:24be more of a
22:25five-star girl
22:26do you think so
22:28what the group
22:29or the hotel
22:32but it's got a
22:33bench seat
22:33so you could
22:34possibly fit
22:34three of you
22:35in there
22:35small people
22:37that'll be
22:37to protect the
22:38water in look
22:38and then that's
22:39for your
22:39for your petrol
22:40is that what it
22:41is Paul
22:42is it
22:42is it
22:42yeah
22:42yeah
22:43it will be
22:43on it
22:43yeah
22:44I would think
22:45that way around
22:45as well
22:46yeah
22:46you don't want
22:47to mix them
22:47up do you
22:48no no
22:48we've
22:49very nice
22:49brushing your teeth
22:50with petrol
22:51would it
22:52perhaps they'd be
22:52clean
22:58uh 509

23:10no not familiar
23:11where are we
23:13you tell me
23:13anyone want to
23:14start me then
23:15£5,000
23:16asking
23:18anything on
23:19there Will
23:19no I'm
23:20afraid I've
23:21got nothing
23:21on my sheet
23:22on this one
23:23no
23:26so
23:28only if you're
23:30paying
23:32that's it
23:33for the
23:33motorhome
23:34and with no
23:35interest
23:35it returned
23:36to its owner
23:37for a proper
23:38staycation
23:44Alvis
23:45you want me
23:46to go and
23:46have a look
23:46at this
23:47Alvis
23:47don't you
23:48it looks
23:49a real
23:49genuine
23:49old car
23:50though
23:50doesn't it
23:50I like bits
23:51like this
23:52attention to
23:53detail
23:53just lovely
23:54isn't it
23:55lovely old
23:56girl aren't
23:57they
23:57they're good
23:57usable
23:58old car
23:59there's a kink
24:00there
24:01there's microblistering
24:02here
24:04there's microblistering
24:05everywhere really
24:06now we've all had
24:07microblistering
24:10and it's got
24:10and it's gutting
24:11and it's gutting
24:12moisture in the
24:13either in or under
24:15the paint
24:16because it won't show
24:17straight away you see
24:18they're lovely for a while
24:19and then they start
24:20and come to light
24:22and you think
24:22oh
24:23but let's be honest
24:25down the road
24:26whizzing along
24:27it's lovely
24:28isn't she
24:28what a majestic
24:29old girl
24:33Alvis is one of the great
24:35and almost forgotten names
24:37of British car manufacturing
24:39but back in the day
24:41its vehicles set the standard
24:43for sporting excellence
24:44Alvis also made aeroplane engines
24:47and armoured cars
24:48but it was the glamorous
24:49tourers that captured the imagination
24:51made to the highest levels of luxury
24:53to rival Bentley and Jaguar
24:56the T21 series set the tone
24:59with its 3 litre engines
25:00adding speed and panache
25:02but as the 1960s rolled on
25:04sales dropped
25:05and the company was taken over by Rover
25:07however in recent years
25:09the brand has been revived
25:10and the high-end
25:11high-spec tradition continues
25:19in my opinion
25:20that car there
25:21in that condition
25:22is worth
25:23late teens
25:2520 if he's lucky
25:27lucky
25:27I can't see it
25:29lots of people
25:30that come into
25:31the classic movement
25:31all think they want
25:33a Jag
25:34or an Alvis
25:34or a whatever
25:35and
25:37in my opinion
25:38got it all wrong
25:40buy yourself
25:40a Maurice Thousand
25:41there's one there look
25:42Maurice Thousand
25:43MGB
25:44Triumph Aerold
25:46maybe
25:46but certainly
25:48Maurice Thousand
25:48MGB
25:49cheapest classic car
25:51in the world
25:51to run
25:52to maintain
25:53super reliable
25:54brilliant
25:55and then if it's for you
25:57then move on
25:58to the Alvis
25:59and you mark my words
26:01whoever has entered it
26:03whoever is selling it
26:03vendor
26:04best thing he can do
26:05buy himself a Maurice Thousand
26:07it is honestly
26:08funny you say that
26:09because he has got
26:10a
26:12Maurice Traveller
26:13there you go
26:14there you go
26:15yep
26:16brilliant
26:17I was right then
26:18weren't I
26:19hey look at that
26:20that's twice this week
26:21I've been right
26:21twice
26:24yeah
26:25so
26:25so that's my take on it
26:27yep
26:27start off with a moggy
26:29finish off with a moggy
26:30brilliant
26:31and have everything else
26:31in between
26:34including the Alvis
26:35see it's a nice old cat
26:36she's alright
26:43alright
26:44she's yours
26:46the Bishop
26:46opened
26:47bikes are back
26:48and there's a reception committee
26:52Sotty
26:53another bike
26:53for you
26:54to go in
26:54with all the other bikes
26:56good
26:57a bit lone bikes
26:58we can do with a few more
27:00how many bikes
27:01have you got in
27:0271
27:03how many more do you want
27:05last year
27:06I had 140
27:12it's quite interesting really
27:14if you think about it
27:15I mean it's got
27:17the
27:17the shockers always have clearly been in the sea for a few years
27:21haven't they
27:21there's no doubt about that
27:23and it's a
27:24Royal Enfield single
27:25350
27:255500
27:26I don't know what
27:27and having joined the throng
27:29Derek's on the case
27:32it's a winter project
27:33that's it
27:34which winter
27:35is debatable
27:36but it's one of a few winters probably
27:38as well as an AJS
27:40and a Norton
27:41there's a pair of Triumphs
27:43including
27:43a classic off-roader
27:45it's a little Triumph Cub
27:46a little 200 Cub
27:47nice little trial
27:48upswept exhaust
27:50really does look the part
27:51Sooty's a trialling man
27:52he'll tell you more about this
27:54I would think
27:54he's probably trialled them
27:55you ever trialled a Cub?
27:58no
27:59no
28:00but I've seen plenty enough
28:01yeah
28:01they're still popular
28:03they are popular
28:03in
28:04you know like pre-65 trials
28:05and stuff like that
28:06yeah
28:06yeah
28:07that's a nice little machine
28:08that actually
28:09and it's a right purposeful
28:10little bike
28:10innit
28:11pre-65 of course
28:13so it was pre-Japanese
28:15who came over
28:17like they did with every other
28:18model of motorbike
28:19and wiped the floor with us
28:20unfortunately
28:21that's exactly what they did
28:22poor old Cub
28:23never stood a chance
28:24though
28:25and the pick of the bunch
28:26a bike with great escape vibes
28:29it's a 650
28:30that's a trophy
28:31and slightly different forks
28:33and rubber covers
28:34and stuff like that
28:35headlamps like this
28:36they just looked a little bit more
28:38I think they were maybe Americanised
28:40built for the American market really
28:42because they do look
28:43they look like a
28:44Steve McQueen bike
28:45I think don't they
28:46you know
28:46it's got what
28:47the lads used to call
28:48a knuckle catcher
28:49which was
28:50obviously it's a little rack
28:51to put your folded up mac
28:52and tie it on with a bungee
28:54and they said
28:55if you're unlucky enough
28:56and went over the top
28:58you could easily get tangled up
28:59in there like
29:00you know
29:00but
29:01I think you'd have to
29:01have flies open at that time
29:03personally
29:03and I don't know many guys
29:04that rode these
29:05but they fly
29:06there's flies open that
29:07but
29:07yeah I think
29:09the answer was
29:10keep your flies shut
29:12and keep your fingers crossed
29:15but that's
29:16I think
29:16so
29:16I think that'll do
29:18somewhere between
29:19three and a half
29:19and four and a half
29:20nice bike
29:24614 is the lovely Triumph
29:261967 Triumph there
29:27look at that
29:28650 Triumph
29:29what a bonnie machine as well
29:30at 3,500 pound we've got
29:33at 3,500 pound then
29:34are we all done at 35
29:36submit it at 3,500
29:38it's still provisional
29:40for the Triumph 650
29:41proving it's still a tricky market
29:44for old British bikes
29:47a 1960 AJS
29:491,000 pound
29:50cheap bike
29:50going to sell it

30:14are we all done
30:15800 pound we'll submit it
30:161959 Triumph Trials
30:18bike there
30:19look at that
30:19that's a nice bit of kit
30:201,350
30:221,375
30:23at 1,375
30:24then I'm going to drop
30:25the hammer then
30:26at 1,375
30:271,4
30:27they have to be sharpish
30:29that he's going to lose it
30:301,400 quid
30:31still the cheapest bike
30:32in the world
30:32at 1,425
30:341,425
30:35then I'm going to sell
30:36the hammer's coming down
30:37at 1,425
30:39sold
30:39too late
30:40missed it
30:40there you go
30:42which leaves
30:42one of Derek's favourite
30:44forms of transport
30:47busher's bike
30:49train's bike
30:49I used to ride one
30:50when I was 14 to 15
30:51I've done many miles
30:52on one of them
30:53fell off them a few times
30:54and all
30:57there we are then
30:58current bid
30:5975 pounds
31:0075 pounds
31:00we've got
31:01nowhere near enough
31:02100
31:02100
31:03150
31:04200
31:05200
31:06250
31:07iron brakes
31:08and a little wheel
31:08dead right
31:09300
31:10300
31:10pound
31:11there's a little club
31:12being formed in York
31:13for them you know
31:13yeah I'm going to join it
31:15300 pound
31:16300 pound and go
31:17I said I'll come out
31:18on me trades bike
31:19this is York
31:20I'm not
31:21I'm going to put it in the van
31:22leave the van round the corner
31:23and pedal in on me trade bike
31:25like you know
31:25to the meat
31:25so I'm going to cheat a bit
31:27325 quid and away
31:29good buy that
31:29selling it then
31:30350
31:31350 pound
31:33all done then
31:34last time looking round
31:36350
31:36Hornsea
31:39and with offers for all the bikes
31:40now in
31:41it's down to Ange
31:42to break the news
31:43to the Henderson family
31:47so I've just got two bikes
31:48that are on provisional
31:49at the moment
31:50lot 614
31:51the 1967 Triumph
31:53you had a reserve of 4,000
31:54it's done three and a half
31:55yeah
31:56and then the other one
31:57is the 1953 Royal Enfield
31:59the reserve was 1,200
32:00it's done 800
32:02alright perfect
32:03that's all of them gone then
32:05bye
32:07all of them
32:08oh that's good news isn't it
32:09oh that's good
32:10I'm happy for him
32:12that is very unusual
32:13because almost every email
32:15I send out for people
32:16wanting to sell their bikes
32:17says that the bike market
32:18is at an all time low
32:19so that's good
32:21happy for him
32:22he should be doing cartwheels
32:24shouldn't he
32:24because the bike market
32:25is very volatile
32:27the old British bikes
32:29they really are
32:30very very difficult
32:32to re-home
32:33but bikes in general
32:35across the board
32:36are terrific value
32:37at the moment
32:37if you're like
32:38shall I, shall I
32:39buy them now
32:40because they cannot get
32:42a lot cheaper
32:42they really can't
33:00you're in at 180
33:01at 180 pound bid then
33:03nice size sign that
33:04at 180 pound bid
33:05at 180 pound bid
33:07look
33:07mix on it up there
33:08you can see it
33:09at 180 then

33:12one of my favourite cars
33:14Alvis
33:15TE21
33:163 litre straight 6
33:185 speed gearbox
33:20beautiful car
33:21quality car
33:22hand built car

34:59we thought that car
35:00was going to have to go
35:01for a lot more
35:02father thought that
35:04yeah
35:04but the lady and gent
35:06that own the car
35:07Martin
35:07he's happy to have the bid

35:17with the new owner
35:18thank you
35:19bye now
35:19bye bye
35:21fortunately
35:21his English
35:22he's a lot better
35:23than my French
35:24so
35:25he
35:26he is
35:26taking the holiday
35:28in the south of France
35:31and
35:32it may take a few days
35:34to make pay
35:37a few weeks later
35:38there's a new arrival
35:39in northern France
35:40complete with French
35:42number plates
35:43and talking of which
35:44the original UK registration
35:46has been kept by Martin
35:48the former owner
35:49of the Alvis
36:09they're certainly a long way from home
36:11but this couple
36:12haven't lost their passion
36:13for all things with wheels
36:17we've had a motorbike
36:17in the conservatory
36:19one Christmas
36:20I came home
36:20to find the bonnet
36:21in my car
36:21at the end of my bed
36:22that was the dad
36:23that was my dad
36:24the conservatory was me
36:24the conservatory was you
36:26so yeah
36:26I'm used to it
36:27yeah
36:31is the choke on this one
36:33slack
36:33no
36:34no
36:35it's tightened up
36:35I like it
36:36it'll just slowly creep
36:37I was surrounded by
36:38cars
36:39motorbikes
36:40tractors
36:40all that growing up
36:42so
36:42definitely had a lot of freedom
36:43in that regard
36:45used to work at a bike shop
36:46in Orkney
36:47cycling shop
36:47so
36:48went from building
36:49push bikes
36:50and then
36:51as the usual way it goes
36:52it escalates to
36:53things with motors
36:55they built up a nice
36:56collection of their own
36:57the latest of which
36:58is a 1967
37:00triumph trophy
37:02on the face of it
37:03it's as British
37:04as tea and biscuits
37:05but Alistair has given
37:06it an American tweak
37:09I was always wanting
37:10to make it into a desert
37:11slate
37:11so I didn't want one
37:12that was
37:13either really really
37:14original
37:14or really
37:15highly restored
37:17and like immaculate
37:18because
37:19I'd feel bad
37:19taking off all those
37:20lovely exhausts
37:21and things like that
37:21because I was just
37:22wanting a desert
37:23sled
37:23so I was wanting
37:24something that was
37:24a good base for it
37:26for those not in the know
37:27Hollywood heartthrob
37:29Steve McQueen
37:29was into desert sled bikes
37:31that were often adapted
37:32with high exhaust pipes
37:34for racing across
37:35California's
37:36arid trails
37:37the pipes and the tyres
37:39make such a big difference
37:40and change to the look
37:41of the bike
37:41these ones were
37:42the 955
37:43so they give a nice line
37:45along the side here
37:46for the desert sled look
37:48new tyre on the front
37:49trial style one
37:50all very desert slerry
37:52new brakes in there
37:53just to improve a bit
37:54and they've actually
37:54come up really well
37:55along with
37:56the right fitment
37:58of shocks
37:58well the ones that
37:59came on it
38:00when I bought it
38:01were half an inch short
38:02so I was buzzing the tyre
38:04over some of the big
38:05bumps
38:06the chunky tyres
38:07was kind of the biggest
38:08difference I noticed
38:10compared to other bikes
38:11that you've had
38:11just with the road noise
38:13as far as I'm used to
38:14mower road
38:15road tyres
38:16road bikes
38:17but as far as being
38:18a passenger in the back
38:21high exhaust
38:21keeps your leg warm
38:22yeah that's true
38:30Alistair had been
38:31keeping an eye out
38:32for the right bike
38:33and with values
38:34of older British
38:35motorcycles falling
38:36he decided a price
38:37of three and a half
38:38grand was too good
38:40to miss
38:42it's got something
38:42that I could
38:43play with
38:43and have a bit of fun with
38:45you weren't going to look
38:46and then you had a look
38:47and then you had to buy it
38:48yeah
38:50it was a really good deal
38:51honest
38:54in recent months
38:56the triumph has been
38:57on its travels
38:57having been taken back
38:59to Orkney
38:59to be shown off
39:01at the island's
39:01classic motor show
39:02there's always
39:04amazing the amount
39:05of stuff that comes
39:05out of the woodwork
39:06in Orkney for this show
39:07like for such a small
39:08population on the whole
39:09the range of stuff
39:11that can be there
39:12definitely keep it
39:13and use it
39:14there's a few things
39:15I just want to tidy up with
39:16and probably through the winter
39:17I'll take it to bits
39:19and just give everything
39:19a really good clean
39:21and update
39:21wiring and things like that
39:24I'm not wanting to go through
39:25it too much cosmetically
39:26because I like that
39:27oily rag side of it
39:29but just make it
39:30reliable
39:31good
39:32hopefully leak
39:32a little bit less
39:33but it's a British bike
39:34so it's going to leak
39:36you can only try so hard
39:49you've got such a big
39:50steering wheel
39:51so obviously it's light
39:51on the steering
39:52the clutch is soft
39:54it's not a racing car
39:55you're not going to start
39:56overtaking things
39:57at 80 miles an hour
39:58cos you wouldn't want to
39:59I like it
40:00I think it's nice
40:00to have a radio
40:01because you can't hear
40:02the engine
40:02because it's a little bit
40:03a bit like a sewing machine
40:07on the leafy lanes
40:09of East Anglia
40:09Gary Sutton's putting
40:11the 1963 Ford Cortina Deluxe
40:14through its paces
40:15after some repair work
40:16to make it roadworthy again
40:20so we've got the engine running
40:21the brakes are done
40:22and everything's lovely
40:24I don't mind the colour
40:25and a lot of people
40:26buy them like this one
40:27they turn them in
40:27they look like
40:28it's good at two doors
40:29you know if you've got
40:30to paint it white
40:33I'm just going to paint it
40:34blue
40:35and then we'll see
40:36once it's done
40:37how much we sell it
40:39I don't know
40:39it's just I think
40:40people collect pictures
40:41don't they
40:41or coins or whatever
40:42and I'll just
40:44collect this sort of stuff
40:45I'll remember
40:46when I was a kid
40:47do you know what I mean
40:49so far
40:49so straightforward
40:51but Gary has an itch
40:52that he just can't scratch
40:56so what
40:57why so many
40:58oh I've got some more
40:59but they're in the shed
41:00and I couldn't get them out
41:00in time
41:02sorry you've got some more
41:03Cortina
41:04yeah I've got nine altogether
41:06I don't know
41:07yeah I don't like
41:07obviously like driving them
41:10just part of your
41:11collecting them
41:12when you was young
41:12and I don't know
41:14I just like them
41:14I like the shape
41:15I like the back
41:16I like the size
41:16I've been just about
41:17getting them
41:17because I'm a bit slimmer
41:19and yeah I do
41:20I like the Ford Angler
41:21and all but they're
41:21a little bit tight again
41:22how many Ford Anglers
41:23have you got
41:24three
41:25three yeah
41:26I'm not being big-headed
41:27nothing
41:27I don't drink
41:28and don't smoke
41:29and I don't want to drink
41:30and I don't want to smoke
41:30I've got 260 cars
41:32at one time
41:32how many
41:33160
41:34and the only reason
41:35I knew I had 160
41:36because my daughters
41:37three daughters
41:37grasped me up to the mum
41:39and they went in the field
41:40and in the shed
41:40and they counted them
41:42and then they told the mum
41:43how many I got
41:44I wish I had them now
41:45but I've not got them now
41:47I'm down to about
41:47wherever
41:47I don't know
41:4980, 90
41:49but the cars I've got now
41:51are better cars
41:51than what I did have
41:52they're a little bit more money
41:56which would be the go-to one
41:57I don't know
41:57this white one
41:58I've had
41:59this look a lot
42:00but they're in the proper motors
42:02I haven't driven that
42:03for about 15 years
42:04sorry Gary
42:05you've not driven it
42:06for 15 years
42:07no we pushed it round here
42:08because I knew you was coming
42:11so the one that you've driven
42:12the most
42:13out of this lot
42:14is the one that you've
42:15perched on now
42:16because I'm here filming you
42:17you made me
42:18yeah
42:18but we won't go into that
42:21come out does it
42:23I think to go in that car now
42:24would be realistic
42:2655, 60 is about right
42:27you know what I mean
42:28that's all you want to do
42:29because you're not
42:29if you want to race you
42:30you can't go and buy
42:31you know
42:31Cosworth for saying
42:32but this is just
42:33a little beat the weight of people
42:35some people weight
42:36and people love it
42:37don't they
42:37my dad had one
42:38my granddad had one
42:39and now I've got one
42:40and everybody's got one
42:41well hang on
42:42you've got more than one
42:43well yeah
42:44I told you
42:44I don't drink a smoke
42:48and it seems Gary's
42:49not quite reached
42:50the end of the road
42:51when it comes to Cortina's
42:53he's now hanging up
42:54a mark to a state
42:56I might even tell the wife
42:57before I buy
42:58see how brave I get
42:59I'd like to come and film that
43:01so that was it
43:02so best thing not to tell the wives
43:04until you get it home
43:06you lived in
43:06and if you've really got the hump
43:09tell it belongs to your mate
43:12for a little while
43:14be alright wouldn't it
43:44I'll see you next time
