00:22ДИНАМИЧНАЯ МУЗЫКА
00:43Welcome along, everyone, from Shanghai, where it's Sprint Weekend.
00:47Oh, my God!
00:54Great job, man.
00:55Thanks for working today.
00:58Welcome to Miami, yo.
01:00Let's bring the heat.
01:13Put up, mate.
01:14Great job.
01:14Let's do it all over again.
01:16Welcome along, ladies and gentlemen, to Montreal.
01:25It's only the fifth race weekend, but already the third sprint.
01:29We're in the Il Notre-Dame, just outside of Montreal,
01:32in the middle of the St. Lawrence River,
01:35and half an hour away from qualifying for that third sprint of 2026.
01:41We talk about momentum so often in sport.
01:44It's an important word, and one man right now has got it.
01:48The teenager, Kimi Antonelli, off the back of three wins.
01:51He was quickest in the opening practice session.
01:53Jamie Chadwick and Bernie Collins are alongside with Bernie.
01:57Yeah, we talked to Jamie and Martin about this earlier,
01:59but what a start to the season,
02:01and what a change, actually, from 2025 after his rookie efforts.
02:04Yeah, you know, I think that in 2025, there's a lot of question marks.
02:08Is he too young? Has Toto put too much behind him?
02:12There was a lot of...
02:12They'd obviously done a lot of work the year before,
02:14getting him a lot of practice sessions in an older car.
02:18So they've really put a lot to get Kimi to where he is,
02:22and I think last year's season has really allowed him
02:25to start this season very, very strongly.
02:27Now, what we need to remember is last year,
02:29he had a dip sort of mid-season around the Europeans,
02:32so has he done enough to correct the issues that he had through there?
02:36We've got to wait and see,
02:37but I don't think any of us expected him to come out so strongly
02:41at the beginning of this season.
02:42You know, everyone had favoured Mercedes,
02:45everyone put that behind George,
02:46and Kimi's really showing us that, you know,
02:49Toto's trust was not unfounded.
02:51Particularly George.
02:52I don't suspect he was expecting this too.
02:55We talked to James Vowles, who was very instrumental,
02:58obviously, to the team principal at Williams now,
02:59following that practice session.
03:01He was instrumental in bringing George Russell through.
03:05He wasn't there when Kimi was coming through,
03:07but still knew him from the junior formula.
03:09And he dominated there,
03:10and I just wonder how much he's taking from every session
03:14that he gets ahead of his team-mate.
03:16The confidence just must build incrementally.
03:19That's it.
03:19I think every session, every race win,
03:21every weekend he gets through without any mistakes.
03:23I think everyone keeps expecting him to make mistakes now,
03:26and he doesn't seem to be.
03:27And I think just that confidence straightaway correlate or straightaway gives him performance.
03:32So he's in a great place in that sense.
03:34I think it's interesting what James was saying earlier about,
03:37you know, they saw he was a generational talent.
03:38We heard that last year.
03:39But you don't know it until you put them in F1 and you put them in the deep end.
03:43And he was fast-tracked into this position last year.
03:45So now it's actually where he can really prove what he's worth.
03:48And so far, so good.
03:49It's still a long season ahead,
03:51and I think that's the bit that I'm sure he's very realistic on.
03:54But, yeah, out of the blocks he's been flying.
03:56Yeah, on the evidence of what we saw in that practice session,
03:58yes, a few of the drivers in the chasing pack
04:00didn't get proper laps in, in sort of quality trim.
04:04However, it's still 7 tenths.
04:05So therefore, George knows this is a huge moment for him today, huge session.
04:10Yeah, I think it is.
04:11I think, you know, they've got their session and the sprint,
04:13and then they've got another qualifying session, obviously, tomorrow.
04:15So it is, this is very, very difficult.
04:18And it is about, you know, I think James said it
04:20in starting your conversation as well.
04:22It's about not making mistakes.
04:23And this track is about not making mistakes.
04:26You don't need to be P1 at the end of the first qualifying session.
04:30It's about gradually building up to it.
04:32The track will feel very different to how it did this morning.
04:35So who is going to keep calm and try and get it to...
04:39Because, yes, it's important, but it is about being quite...
04:42This session is going to be about calm.
04:44OK, let's go to the Skype pad.
04:45Karun is there.
04:46Karun, what have you got for us?
04:47He's going to look at the side-by-side, I believe.
04:50I am, Simon.
04:50Let's take a look at the two laps in the Mercedes drivers this morning.
04:54Kimi Antonelli on the left, George Russell on the right.
04:56There's a tenth and a half between them.
04:58And just looking at the first section there,
05:00you can see just in terms of track usage, I'll go back.
05:04Antonelli feels like he's got a bit more confidence to attack the kerb.
05:07Look at George there.
05:08Snap of oversteer.
05:09We saw him, in fact, spin off later on in the session there.
05:12So Antonelli gets a cleaner run.
05:14He gets a bit more width into turn two.
05:17And that is important because even before we've got too far into the lap,
05:21and I'll use the kerb there on the right as a reference,
05:24you'll sneak up to the end of the kerb.
05:26Antonelli has already started to pull a bit of margin,
05:29and, in fact, that carries on uphill to turn three as well.
05:33Through the action, three, four chicane pretty much.
05:35Even Stevens between the drivers, both of them leaving a bit of margin to the wall on the right.
05:41Antonelli leaving a bit more margin, in fact, than George.
05:43Let's get up to six and seven.
05:45A little bit of under-rotation for George.
05:47Just a hesitation.
05:48But gets on that apex kerb really nicely.
05:52And if we come out of turn seven, we'll use the kerb again up there.
05:57And you can see that margin there that Antonelli pulled compared to George at turn two
06:02has pretty much stayed the same through here.
06:06Now, into turn eight, George gets a little bit of oversteer on the way in.
06:10I'll just slow it down.
06:11Watch Russell's hands here on the right.
06:13As he turns in, the rear of the car starts to step out of line.
06:16He catches it, gets to the apex, and actually, in a way, it opens up the line for the second
06:22part.
06:23So he ends up carrying, despite the slide on the way in, he carries a bit more speed through the
06:28actual chicane.
06:29So when we look at the kerb on the way out, he's now actually a smidge ahead.
06:34So he's pulled some of that time back through the eight, nine chicane.
06:39When we get to the hairpin, both drivers pretty good on the brakes,
06:43but Russell doesn't seem, he gets a slightly different trajectory.
06:46Just go back and watch it there.
06:48He has a slightly different line.
06:50Antonelli gets closer to that apex.
06:52Look at Russell, understeering, look at his hands, completely upside down with the steering lock.
06:56And there's hesitation on the throttle.
06:58So he is slower picking up the power.
07:01And then all that advantage that he's gained at the eight, nine chicane, he's now given away.
07:06He's slower through the corner, slower on the throttle, and then loses out all the way up to that final
07:12chicane.
07:13Into that final chicane itself, gets over that kerb.
07:16Kimi looks like he's got a bit more confidence, just carrying minimum speed, pulls out a little bit more time.
07:22This is a confident circuit, Simon.
07:24And the teenager, the world championship leader, still fears like he's got a bit more behind the wheel of his
07:30Mercedes.
07:30Back to you.
07:31Yeah, can do no wrong at the moment.
07:33Quick look at the drivers and construction system.
07:35Whiz you through this.
07:3620 points between the two Mercedes drivers.
07:38Lewis was quicker than Charles in that practice session, but trails him and is tied on points with that.
07:44The current world champion, Lando Norris, who finished that session down in sixth.
07:47His teammate, Oscar Piastri, without a lap in seventh.
07:51Behrman, Gasly, and Lawson making up the rest of that.
07:53But Franco Colopinto probably gets the award for most improved driver, aside from Kimi Antonelli so far this season.
08:01He's up to 11th after a good weekend in Miami.
08:05In the constructors, well, it is Mercedes with a healthy 70-point gap over Ferrari.
08:10And then 16th to McLaren, and McLaren leading Red Bull by 64.
08:15Talking of those two teams.
08:17And we know that Giampiero Lambiesi is leaving Red Bull for the start of 2028 to go to McLaren.
08:24But some disagreements about the role that he'll be taking.
08:27Here's the two current team principals in charge.
08:30This is what they had to say on the matter.
08:34It's certainly my understanding that GP is going to McLaren to become a team principal.
08:40That's what I told you at the time.
08:43Obviously, we had a number of conversations before he was going to make the decisions.
08:48Now, don't ask me if it's going to happen.
08:51The timing of it is none of my business.
08:53I can just tell you the content of our conversations.
08:56I very strongly wanted GP to join McLaren.
09:01I am personally very stretched in my role as team principal.
09:07And I need a strong group of leaders working with me.
09:12So I think the plan is very clear.
09:14Any other speculation leads us back to the silly season.
09:20It's cleared up.
09:22I was thinking that this has been a bit mounted out of molehills.
09:25But there was speculation.
09:26Is he going across as team principal?
09:29Well, Andrea Stella was just quite clear there.
09:31And I think this has kind of emerged right at the start.
09:34He's a busy boy.
09:35He needs some help.
09:37Yeah, exactly.
09:37And there's a lot of teams up and down the Petlion that have this structure of, like,
09:41I guess we used to call it a chief race engineer and then a race engineer on each car.
09:45And that's more the role that GP's going to.
09:47So there has been a few teams that have then incorporated that.
09:53So, like, in GP's current role with Red Bull, he's head of race engineering and Max Verstappen's race engineer.
09:59So it's more getting him in this position where he is a bit more overall control of that engineering department,
10:04which I think it'll really see how much.
10:06I mean, at that stage, it just shows you that the best teams never stop, constantly improving.
10:12Again, going back to what James was saying, Williams are on the poach, if you like, at the moment.
10:16But it's just part of the sport.
10:17Exactly.
10:18And it's a team of people, this sport.
10:20There's so many different individuals that also have to work together.
10:23We've seen it, for example, with Adrian Newey at Aston Martin.
10:26You don't always take all the best people and put them together and think that's going to make it work.
10:30You've got to find a good calibration.
10:32And I really like this way that, you know, you see team principals, deputy team principals,
10:36whether they've got that title or not, it's kind of how the structure is internally.
10:40And it allows, I think, for more bandwidth for the team principals because they are busy
10:45and there is a lot going on for them on a political side, on a media side, everything.
10:48So it gives them a bit more opportunity to think more about the race team.
10:51Right, sprint weekend.
10:52It's a busy weekend.
10:53There's also F2 and F1 Academy.
10:55And after the break, we're going to hear from Alba Larson, who last month delivered an inspiring speech about women
11:01in motorsport.
11:02It was such an amazing platform to be able to go up and tell my story, tell my mission.
11:08I'm really, really thankful to all the people who helped me get on that stage and, you know, bring out
11:13the message.
11:25Welcome back.
11:26In case you weren't watching earlier, nasty moment for Alex Albin, turn 6, 7.
11:31I mean, you can see just that shadow in front of him.
11:33That was one of the groundhogs from around here.
11:36And very unfortunate for that groundhog.
11:39But unfortunately, Alex hit it, then crashed the car and is now, well, they've been frantically working on it ever
11:47since.
11:47But it made a bit of a mess of that car.
11:50And as a result of that, Ted, what can you tell us about his chances of taking part in sprint
11:56qualifying?
11:58Well, unfortunately, Simon, Williams say there is no chance.
12:01So Williams say that Alex Albin will not be able to take part in sprint qualifying.
12:05And so we'll start Saturday's sprint race from the back of the grid, if he's allowed to do that by
12:11the stewards.
12:11And just, you know, another example of how the smallest thing, just an animal, a poor groundhog running onto the
12:17track at the very worst time,
12:18can have significant consequences both for the unfortunate groundhog and for a racing driver in a race.
12:25Not that that really matters so much, but it does mean, as you can see, the car is in several
12:30pieces.
12:30The rear wing, the rear gearbox isn't even on the car.
12:34So it will necessitate a new gearbox, a new engine.
12:38And so we will only have 21 cars going into sprint qualifying.
12:42That might be down, I'm afraid to say, to 20 because Liam Lawson's car, Simon, is also in some doubt.
12:48He had a hydraulic failure in the only practice session we had this morning.
12:52And Alan Permain, the team boss, is saying that it's really a race against time.
12:55And if I'm looking at this car right now, again, look at this, Kieran.
12:59No gearbox on the car, no engine, the car in many, many pieces.
13:04And I think the fears of the team boss, Alan Permain, down here at Racing Bulls will be well founded.
13:08I think this is looking like another car that won't make it ready for sprint qualifying.
13:13If it does, it will be somewhat of a miracle.
13:15But, yeah, that's another car come a cropper.
13:18But, happily for Liam Lawson, it was just a hydraulic failure and no further groundhogs were injured in his incident.
13:24Good stuff, yeah.
13:25Bad news, that, for Alex Alba.
13:27Now, as I mentioned before the break, it's actually the return of F1 Academy this weekend.
13:33And Ferrari, or part of the Ferrari Young Driver programme, is Alba Larson.
13:37And she caught up with Rachel early this week.
13:40Alba, it's an absolute pleasure to talk to you today.
13:43I wanted to start, if I can, with the talk you gave at the summit.
13:48Let's start with the facts.
13:50Less than 5% of Formula Racing drivers are female.
13:54There are no women on the Formula One grid.
13:56None in F2 and none in F3.
13:59Across every top tier of professional motorsport, the story is the same.
14:04This isn't because girls aren't interested in racing.
14:0840% of F1's global audience is female.
14:12What sort of reaction did you have to that?
14:14Because it was very impressive.
14:16Thank you.
14:17It was amazing.
14:18It was one of the biggest ones I've done.
14:21It was such an amazing platform to be able to go up and tell my story, tell my mission.
14:27I'm really, really thankful to all the people who helped me get on that stage and, you know, bring out
14:32the message.
14:34I've had such positive feedback from it, both online and people who have seen it in real life.
14:41Everyone was very, very happy and just, it was such an inspirational day where we talked about the future and
14:48the future of racing, the future of girls in racing.
14:51We're sitting in the Formula One paddock right now.
14:54We're outside Ferrari.
14:55You have your Ferrari top on because you're representing them in the F1 Academy right now.
15:00But you only started karting during lockdown, is that right?
15:03So in 2020.
15:04So your path has been incredibly quick.
15:07It has, and it feels like it was yesterday, but it also feels like it's been 10 years because so
15:13much has happened in such a short amount of time.
15:16I've experienced so much cool stuff.
15:19Now to be a part of Ferrari is such an amazing thing to be able to say.
15:23Not many drivers get to do that, and I just feel very honoured that they chose me between so many
15:29drivers.
15:30They can pick and choose from anyone, and they chose me to be part of their team.
15:34I hate to bring it up, but you've been leading a couple of races and then had incidents.
15:40So how do you get over that, and then how do you approach the next time you're in the lead,
15:44and how do you approach this weekend, I guess, as well?
15:47For me, it's not a sore point anymore.
15:50I have learned so much from these incidents that I feel very, very prepared for when it's going to happen
15:56again, that I'm in the lead.
15:58I know what to do and what not to do.
16:01Last year, I had a bit of a learning year.
16:04It was my first full season in Formula cars.
16:08By the end of the season, I was leading in Vegas.
16:10It was wet.
16:11It was super slippery.
16:12I made a bit of a mistake, but I learned so much from that.
16:16And now in Shanghai, I know that I have the speed, and we just keep showing that from now on.
16:21This weekend, then, what are your thoughts on this track?
16:23What are your expectations?
16:24I really like this track.
16:26We were here last year, and I had a pretty good weekend here.
16:30I didn't do so well in qualifying, but I was the one overtaking the most.
16:33I finished in the top five, and I know that you can really overtake.
16:38You can have some really good races here, so I'm excited for that this weekend.
16:43If there's a young girl watching right now at home, what would your message be if she thinks,
16:47oh, I couldn't possibly do that?
16:48Of course you can.
16:50I think girls can be just as fast as boys, even faster.
16:53I think if you want to go for it, you should.
16:55There should be no stopping you.
16:57Just go for it.
17:00And it certainly didn't stop you, Jamie.
17:02You're a three-time winner of the W Series.
17:04What have you felt about the way that F1 Academy has kind of embedded itself into F1 Weekends?
17:10Yeah, I think it's going from strength to strength.
17:12Yeah, very nice seeing Alba.
17:14And she's someone that's really using her platform, and platform Ferrari have also given her the best for the next
17:20generation of female talent, which is fantastic.
17:22But what I'm excited about is this is the next generation of female drivers coming through,
17:25and given the opportunity in F1 Academy, I think that's what's going to be exciting.
17:30It really has made a difference to mainly F4 grids, a lot more female participation in particular in those kind
17:37of fields and areas of the sport.
17:39So, yeah, it's exciting.
17:40I think it's going to be a big shift over the next few years, particularly, yes, we start to see
17:45them progress up through the ranks.
17:46Yeah, I think, you know, it's people like that, Jamie, all these girls, little young girls at home or parents
17:53of young girls at home
17:54can see that there is progression, there is this opportunity out there, and it's getting those much younger girls interested
18:01in carton,
18:01giving it a go, going to their local track and just trying it out.
18:04And then, you know, as Alba said there, trying to increase participation at the youth levels
18:09will then start to see more and more females coming through that ranks.
18:13Yeah, same on the pit wall as well, seeing more and more females on earth.
18:16She's trying to appear into the back of car number 44's garage, no sign of Lewis Hamilton yet.
18:20I mean, he's so successful around this circuit, same as Schumacher versus 6,7 wins.
18:26He's, um, what is it about Canada?
18:28I mean, you talked about it, Bernie, but to come to you, Jamie, from a driving perspective, you said, no
18:32mistakes.
18:33He's so precise here.
18:34He knows every single line in every single condition, doesn't he?
18:37He's very good at it.
18:38It is funny how drivers have their favourites in terms of tracks.
18:41I think, actually, Lewis and George are quite similar in some of the tracks that they seem to go well
18:45at.
18:45Canada, Budapest.
18:47This is a very technical circuit.
18:48It's very start-stop.
18:49It requires a lot.
18:50It's a low downpour circuit as well.
18:53So, in terms of what you need from the car, the car's not always giving you everything you want
18:57because it's a little bit tricky.
18:58As we saw in F1, very, very dusty as well.
19:02And I think that's where Bernie's point of no mistakes comes in, is the track's going to get better and
19:06better.
19:06So, you've got to be there in that last lap in qualifying because, yeah, it's only going to improve from
19:11now on in.
19:12They were third and fourth in the hour of practice.
19:14Again, I mean, we're going to see what happens when it comes to sprint qualifying itself.
19:19And, actually, the difference that you do get between sprint qualifying and qualifying once they've come out of Park Fermi
19:24again,
19:25that does seem to change.
19:26It certainly changed in Miami, didn't it?
19:28Yeah, and I think it will change a lot here because we're expecting tomorrow to be another nice sunny day.
19:32So, their setup that they do here might be very different to the one that they do in qualifying on
19:36Saturday, going to Sunday.
19:38But this track is about having confidence on the big braking zone.
19:41So, that's what the teams are really focusing on, is that braking and all the big steps here.
19:46Quick word on Max.
19:47We know that nothing separated him and George in actual qualifying in 2024 when they raced around here.
19:55But, there we go.
19:56Kimi Antonelli is the man with momentum, as I mentioned, at the top of the show.
20:00It's up to the rest of the chasing back to catch up.
20:03We'll see next in sprint qualifying.
20:05We'll see you next time.
20:48We'll see you next time.
21:05Well, good evening.
21:07And for the first time since 2024, when we went to China and Miami, we've got back-to-back sprint
21:13Grand Prix weekends for you in Formula One.
21:15It's round five of the 2026 season and the 55th World Championship Canadian Grand Prix.
21:21But for the first time here in Montreal, we're going to have a little sprint around this 2.71-mile
21:27circuit.
21:2723 laps to come in tomorrow's race.
21:30Who fancies taking pole?
21:32Mercedes might have got pole for all the Grand Prix this year, but McLaren managed to nick top spot on
21:37the grid in Miami last time out with Lando Norris.
21:40No mandatory pit stops.
21:42And there were 14 corners to negotiate.
21:44Six to the left and eight to the right.
21:46Welcome, then, to your sprint weekend here in Canada.
21:51And Martin Brundle, you've been trackside today watching all the action.
21:55Mercedes, big upgrades.
21:56McLaren, a smaller upgrade to try and take the fights to their rivals who look better out on track.
22:02Mercedes look very strong, no doubt about it.
22:04McLaren are quite excited about the continued upgrades they have.
22:09We saw a lot of drivers locking the front tires up, locking the front axle under braking.
22:15Even some, we heard Oscar Piazza being told, your front wing closed, but it hadn't, the aero hadn't reattached, and
22:23you locked your front brake.
22:24So, and that's always been a key aspect of getting around this racetrack, is pinning the braking zones and not
22:30leaving any time on the table.
22:32But, of course, if you arrive and you're just carrying too much, too much speed, you just can't get into
22:38the corner.
22:38So, you've got to absolutely get that right.
22:41And there are a couple of walls here that will bite you hard if you get a bit too close
22:47to them.
22:47So, you format soft tires for the dash for pole position in SQ3.
22:51That's eight minutes long, medium tires for the right to get into the top ten.
22:56Ten minutes long for SQ2.
22:58And we lose the slowest six drivers from SQ1.
23:02And you've got 12 minutes to sort it all out, all on the medium tires.
23:05Six drivers, Ted Kravitz, but there's one already out, sadly, for Alex Albon and Williams.
23:10Make that two, I'm afraid.
23:12So, I can confirm that Liam Lawson will not take part in this qualifying session,
23:16because he's in his rather natty chinos and team shirt, and on the Racing Bulls pit wall.
23:22His car was never going to be fixed in time.
23:25It didn't have an engine in it.
23:26It didn't have a gearbox, Crofty, when we did the end of the little update in the end of the
23:31pre-show.
23:32And that has proved to be the case.
23:34So, we've got 20 runners.
23:36Because, as you say, Mercedes leading the way in free practice, first and second.
23:40But what about the Ferraris, third and fourth?
23:42I've got to tell you that they're very pessimistic about keeping those third and fourth places in this sprint qualifying
23:48session.
23:49Ferraris say this is an engine track.
23:51It always has been.
23:53And they are down on power compared to the Mercedes and even the Red Bulls.
23:57So, they are playing down their chances against Mercedes and the two McLarens.
24:02So, you need someone like Lewis Hamilton if you're a Ferrari who holds the track record here for the most
24:08success,
24:08along with Michael Schumacher.
24:10Six poles in the Grand Prix, seven Grand Prix wins.
24:13And, of course, in 2007, he's made a Grand Prix pole and win, and he leads the cars out into
24:18the sunshine.
24:19They're beautiful machines, but did you see they clunk into first gear?
24:23Lewis pulled first gear there, and the car almost jumped forward.
24:27And you crash on the headrest momentarily.
24:31But as soon as you're out there, it's what they call a seamless gearbox, and they are peachy as could
24:38be when you're up to speed.
24:40And sadly for Liam Lawson, he wasn't up to speed.
24:43The car stopped by the side of the track.
24:45They've had to go to the stewards as well because the clutch release just wasn't working.
24:49The marshals struggling to get that car retrieved, and they've not managed to fix the issue either.
24:55So no Alex Albon, no Liam Lawson.
24:57A little reminder that the Cadillacs, Perez and Bottas, and the Aston Martins of Stroll and Alonso,
25:03the only cars who haven't reached SQ2 this season.
25:07Will it continue here today?
25:09Well, let's hope that we get a bit more competition for the places in SQ2.
25:14We'll see.
25:15We saw a little bit of cement dust kicking up where obviously there's been some fluids dropped as the Lewis
25:20Hamilton went through turns 9 and 10.
25:23So the track will need to come to the drivers quickly.
25:26But of course, with two out already, we're now only going to lose four in this session.
25:30And Lewis' mum's here as she was in China.
25:34The scene of his Lewis Hamilton's win from the pole of the sprint last year.
25:39Lewis very happy that his mum's here, and he was talking about it in the press conference yesterday.
25:43He said she wants to come travelling, and Canada was top of the list.
25:46Here we are on board then with the seven-time world champion.
25:49Take us through the rest of all that, Martin.
25:51Yeah, a lot of understeer there.
25:52The front of the car, not very obedient as Lewis was asking for some grip
25:57and then spinning its rear wheels up, coming out of turn two.
26:00This is three, four, a little bit off camber up against the wall.
26:04Turn five will be easily flat out, and six smacks you right in the face.
26:08If you go that right, take some early curve.
26:12Now the track just opens slightly through the exit.
26:16And take a reasonably straight line in there.
26:18It's quite bumpy.
26:19And just underneath that bridge, you hit the brake and sweep into 9 and 10.
26:25And again, these chicanes just ease slightly through the exit,
26:29and you can really power on.
26:31It's so satisfying.
26:32And a big stop down at the hairpin.
26:35And again, the front of the car just struggling a bit for Lewis Hamilton.
26:39And now it's absolutely flat out all the way down the back straight.
26:44And you've got one decision to make.
26:46Where are you going to brake and turn in, basically, into the final chicane?
26:51It's a critical one.
26:52And it's easy to leave time on the table there.
26:54It's easy to leave a wheel in the fence as well.
26:57Stay right for the shortest run to the line.
27:00And Hamilton then into a 15-4.
27:04Not a particularly fast lap time, but the track doesn't look particularly fast either.
27:08Now, that is very true.
27:10The track temperature, 42 degrees.
27:12The sun has been baking the track all day.
27:14Air temperature now 20 degrees.
27:16It has got significantly warmer since the practice session earlier today.
27:21Carlos Sainz, the 1 Williams, still out there on the track on taking part.
27:26A 1.17.1 as he crosses the line.
27:29And one by one, they're all now going out for their flying laps.
27:32And they'll get at least a couple of flying laps, if not three in, during the course of this SQ1
27:37session.
27:38Interesting getting out of the way there in turn five.
27:41Wow, that looked close, didn't it?
27:44Charles Leclerc, a tenth up on his teammate in the first sector, coaxing the car in to this chicane.
27:52And this is the bumpy straight I was telling you about.
27:56And there's a shadow under that bridge.
27:58Your braking point is around there somewhere.
28:01The shadow moves, of course, through the day.
28:03So you can't use that as your reference point as the sun moves around the sky.
28:07But you tend to be braking underneath that bridge.
28:10And here's the hairpin at the end of the back straight.
28:13Had total brake failure in there once.
28:15Hit the wall so hard in my Tyrell.
28:18I can still feel it.
28:20And it was 40-odd years ago.
28:22Yeah, pretty scary when your brakes fail around here.
28:25But they're much more robust these days.
28:27On then, towards this final chicane, Charles Leclerc through as close as he dares to the wall of champions.
28:35It seems to me Leclerc is taking a lot more of a wider line with the walls and much closer
28:40to it than his teammate.
28:42And he's got four tenths on Lewis Hamilton with that first flying lap.
28:45Here comes George Russell, pole sitter for the last two Grand Prix here at the circuit Gilles Villeneuve.
28:53Russell powers to the line.
28:54Might have got a bit of a toe behind the weaving Williams on his way into that final chicane.
28:59He's a couple of tenths up on Charles Leclerc.
29:01We're on board with Lando Norris next, the winner and pole sitter in Miami.
29:06Last sprint, last time out.
29:08Just a tenth behind George Russell, which, you know, promises much then in terms of competitive closeness between the Mercedes
29:15and the McLaren.
29:16You could hear his car hitting the ground really hard, couldn't you?
29:18I mean, it's the same with Russell.
29:20Russell's suspension looks quite stiff.
29:22That means you can run the cars lower without wearing the underfloor out.
29:26And they both look a little bit of a handful on the bumps, which is clearly giving them some downforce.
29:32When it comes to success in the sprints, this man has got it wrapped up currently.
29:36Ten sprint poles, 13 sprint wins.
29:39By far the most successful driver in this format of the four-time world champion, Max Verstappen.
29:44Crosses the line, puts three tenths between himself and George Russell.
29:47See anything like that, didn't we, in free practice one?
29:50So it must be fuel loads then.
29:52And power levels that were wildly different this morning for some teams.
29:57Piastri, on his flying lap in practice, locked up before the final chicane.
30:01This time, he manages to get through quite nicely.
30:04But a 1.14.8 is about four tenths off the pace.
30:08Or just over three tenths off the pace.
30:10And here comes the championship leader then, 19 years of age, Kimi Antonelli, winner of the last three Grand Prix.
30:17The driver who's taken the last three Grand Prix pole as well.
30:20And looking for more success here this weekend, especially after being quickest in practice earlier today.
30:27And he's getting a slight toe behind his teammate.
30:29He goes quickest overall.
30:30And we're almost into the 1.13s already.
30:32Piastri, nearly a half second quicker than Verstappen.
30:35Antonelli, once again, is just flying, isn't he?
30:39Everywhere.
30:40He's carrying so much speed and confidence.
30:43And that's it.
30:44It's confidence and momentum and a fearlessness every time he seems to get into the car at the moment.
30:51It's Sergio Perez, 16th for him, ahead of Colopinto, who has had an energy store replaced in his car after
30:59missing pretty much all of the practice session when he lost power at the end of the back straights on
31:06his first lap earlier today.
31:08Colopinto, Stroll, Bottas and Bortoletto, the current four who need to improve their times.
31:14Lewis Hamilton going for it again.
31:16And let's see with a bit of fuel burnt off where he can move up from.
31:20Eighth goes quickest.
31:22Eighth one-hundredths between himself and Antonelli.
31:24We saw him and his front tyres didn't look in for his first run, but the track is changing dramatically
31:31quickly with so many cars out there.
31:34Ooh, George Russell braking a little bit later maybe than he would have wanted to, going straight on at the
31:41chicane.
31:41And that lap has gone a-begging for George Russell to stay fourth.
31:46Lando Norris now the next to get to the final chicane.
31:49A lot nicer for Lando Norris and getting a beautiful tone behind the Williams, down the straight, only third fastest
31:57though as Pierre Gasly has caught the attention of race control of the stewards for possible impeding use on that
32:03when we get it.
32:05Stappen was flying in the first sector, but the middle one on this particular lap, not quite so good.
32:12George Russell with the fastest middle sector so far with 23.4.
32:15Verstappen lost three tenths, and there's Arvid Lindblad, the next driver to pop up into the top five on his
32:21first visits to Montreal.
32:22The rookie who had a disappointing weekend in Miami, shall we say, coming back with renewed confidence here at a
32:30track that he might like a bit better.
32:31Stroll moves up into P14.
32:34Verstappen goes third fastest, and this is the Audi of Gabriel Bortoletto, who's currently the slowest driver on the track.
32:41Can this lift him out of the bottom six with three and a half minutes to go?
32:45Cannes goes 12th fastest, only 12th fastest.
32:48Next to cross the line is teammate Nico Hülkenberg, who moves into the top ten.
32:53On board with the McLaren of Oscar Piastri.
32:57Seventh fastest for Piastri.
32:59Oscar doesn't use that trick to the finish line yet anyway, of keeping hard right.
33:05It's probably a little bit dirty out there still, but, yeah, that's a surprising...
33:12Lewis Hamilton getting his laps in early.
33:15He was the first driver out for this session.
33:17He's the latest to go on a flying lap, too, as Colopinto crosses the line and goes 10th fastest.
33:22Hamilton sending the best time overall in the first sector, and he currently has the advantage by about 800s from
33:29Kimi Antonelli.
33:30Sergio Perez still down in the bottom six, and Hamilton now on his way.
33:35Sergio Perez's experience at 285 races at Hamilton, and his 385th Grand Prix of his Formula One career this weekend.
33:46They're only allowed to collect six megajoules of electricity on the lap,
33:51and that's why we didn't get too much of that what's called superclipping where the, basically, the engine is charging
33:58the battery up at the end of the straight.
34:00But we, it dulled off a little bit there for Hamilton, but we certainly have improved that aspect.
34:06Just under two minutes to go then, Kimi Antonelli.
34:08Oh, we've got a red flag.
34:10A red flag, and the session has been stopped.
34:14And this is for an Aston Martin.
34:16It's Fernando Alonso who's gone into the wall at Turn 3, and that is major, major disappointment for Fernando Alonso.
34:2520 years ago, he was winning the Canadian Grand Prix here with Aston Martin.
34:31He's looking to get out of the bottom six.
34:32He is currently out of the bottom six and through to SQ2 for the first time this season.
34:38If they can't get this session, restart it.
34:41And it's touch-and-go, Martin, as to whether they do restart this session or not, with one minute and
34:4646 seconds left on the clock.
34:48I think they're obliged to.
34:49With that, you can still get out and get a lap in.
34:52So, they'll be queuing up down the end of the pit lane, those that are in trouble.
34:56That's unusual for Fernando Alonso, isn't it?
34:58He's locked his brakes on the way into Turn 3 and just gone straight on.
35:02He's got suspension damage, which is why I think he hasn't re-fired the engine and tried to reverse out
35:07of there.
35:08It's just a bittersweet moment because Alonso could well be through, but not taking part in SQ2.
35:13Pedro De La Rosa, the team representative, watching on from the Aston Martin garage.
35:21Lance Stroll, if they can't get this session restarted, is out.
35:24He's down in that bottom six.
35:25That's the big lock-up.
35:27Oh, straight on.
35:28It's a hefty whack into it as well.
35:30Yeah.
35:31He's carrying a lot of speed.
35:32Now we're going to go on board.
35:34This won't be altogether fun, will it?
35:37He's hit the brakes.
35:39And then there was a point there where he really needed to go up the escape road, but it's easier
35:45to say than do.
35:47You've got a decision point there, and he didn't take it.
35:50He thought he'd still get round.
35:52Yeah, sorry.
35:53Lock up, mate.
35:56Yeah, he's hit the brakes hard, and literally it's instantly locked.
36:00So, Valtteri Bottas down in that bottom six, along with Albon and Lawson, who aren't taking part.
36:06Pierre Gasly is down in that bottom six, and that would be a big shock if Pierre Gasly goes out.
36:13And I know that they weren't massively competitive at Alpine in the practice session,
36:17but Pierre Gasly has scored points in the three opening Grand Prix weekends of the season.
36:25We weren't expecting him to be going out.
36:28Sergio Perez, 17th, Lance Stroll, 18th, are also in that bottom six.
36:32So Gasly will be the surprise driver not to make it through.
36:37No further investigation on that impeding incident, by the way, for Pierre Gasly.
36:41So he survived that one.
36:42But will he get out in time to get a lap in?
36:46Will he be able to get a lap in?
36:47Ted Kravitz, let's head down to you.
36:49Well, I can't see from where I am in the pit lane all the way down to Alpine,
36:52but they'll be working that out.
36:53They'll also be working out, Crofty, whether just one lap of warm-up will be enough for the tyres,
36:59for the medium tyres, of course, that they still have to run the same set in this sprint qualifying one.
37:05And I'd add to that, Oli Behrmann, who's also potentially going to be in trouble here.
37:11A 15.8 Behrmann has done.
37:13I think you need to be doing a 15.6 or a 15.5 to be absolutely sure of getting
37:19through.
37:19The likes of Carlos Sainz, 11th, with a 15.5.
37:23But how many of these drivers will be able to get out, be able to get good heat into those
37:27medium tyres,
37:28and then get a lap across the line in the 1.15.6s or 1.15.7s?
37:34So, Gasly and Behrmann, watch out for them on the restart.
37:37Just watching Kimi Antonelli behind the Haas of Oli Behrmann.
37:41He blocked me, man.
37:44He definitely had to jump off the brakes there to avoid a collision.
37:47Yeah, that was an impeding there, unfortunately.
37:51So, they'll want to get down.
37:52Those that have got to get out will want to get down the end of the pit lane if they
37:55can.
37:56But they can't until the FIA put up a resumption time.
38:00Yes, that's right.
38:01They're not allowed out of the garage, are they?
38:03No.
38:03Highly unusual to see Fernando Alonso making driving errors, isn't it?
38:08Well, it is.
38:09But it's an error that might just have benefited him, to be honest.
38:13It might have protected Fernando Alonso's P14 because if those that are in contention, a Gasly, a Perez Astrol, can't
38:24get out, get a lap in, Fernando's through.
38:26And he's got a better starting position as a result of it.
38:30Not that I'm saying he deliberately went into the wall there.
38:32You wouldn't do that.
38:34But, yeah, there's Pierre Gasly there waiting.
38:38And this is going to be proper reaction time to get into the fast lane.
38:42But they're so far down because the garage order is decided by where you finished in the championship the previous
38:50year.
38:51Then I can't see Pierre Gasly getting to the pit lane exit in time to get a lap in to
38:57get to the line before the checkered flag.
38:58Depends how many drivers bother to or feel they need to go out.
39:01Are those right at the sharp end?
39:03Maybe not.
39:04But, you know, the track is evolving.
39:06You can see the teams.
39:07I think there's enough.
39:08They're desperate, aren't they, to not waste a second.
39:11Well, you've got two Hasses that would want to go out.
39:13You've got a Williams of Science that would want to go out.
39:17So there's three in your way for a start.
39:20Yeah, this is key to get those cars into the pit lane, claim the high ground, get yourself into the
39:25fast lane.
39:27And then get down to the end because to get around, as you can see, if you're flat out, it's
39:3374 seconds at the moment.
39:36And what have we got?
39:38106 seconds available.
39:40So they've got a half a minute of fat really there.
39:44But they've got to get out of the pit lane and up to speed.
39:47And if you are on the track and you are in a position to get a lap in, you've also
39:52got to keep your tyres from overheating.
39:54So not go too fast.
39:55Keep your battery state of charge exactly where you need it to be.
39:58It's a very tall order.
40:01Is that barrier okay or is that going to need looking at it?
40:04I'm assuming they've decided it will absorb a car coming through, coming towards it.
40:10And I'm assuming the teams have been told that we will get a resumption of this first part of sprint
40:17qualifying.
40:18You'd have to.
40:19When there's ample time, not ample, when there's enough time to get around and start a flying lap, you have
40:25to restart it.
40:27Arvid Lindblad.
40:30I'm not sure he's going to be going out.
40:32He certainly doesn't need to go out for the rest of this session.
40:34That's a stonking lap, the 1.14.5 from him to be ahead of Isaac Hajar, to be ahead of
40:39Piastri, to be ahead of Russell Leclerc.
40:42That's a super lap from Arvid.
40:46Yeah.
40:47So we've seen lockups.
40:49We've seen people running wide.
40:53Yeah, a lot of errors out there.
40:55The track looks slippery, doesn't it?
40:57It's pretty tricky.
40:58It's windy out there, too.
41:00Track temperature at 42 at the moment.
41:03That's plenty warm enough to get these mediums.
41:05So you can put the blankets back on, but they don't whiz the tyres up temperature-wise.
41:12Over a couple of hours, they'll take them from ambient up to the 70 degrees they're allowed to do in
41:18the blankets for slicks.
41:19But it'll help, but they certainly won't be whizzing those tyres up to where they absolutely would normally be coming
41:27out of blankets.
41:27Graham Loudon, team principal at Cadillac.
41:30Graham, what have the team been told?
41:32Are we going to get a resumption here?
41:34Yeah, I think so.
41:35I think there's a few more minutes of barrier repair.
41:37And then it's going to be a bit hectic after that.
41:41It's a bit unfortunate for us, because Valtteri was just closing the lap when they threw the red.
41:45And would that lap have taken him out of the bottom six?
41:49Well, it was green sectors.
41:51And we're, yeah, we're, yeah, the checker's pretty close there.
41:55Yeah.
41:57Yeah, it's, it's a bit annoying for you, I'm sure.
42:00What, what, what odds that you can get to the checker, to the line in time before the checkered flag
42:06from what your position of furthest away at the other end of the pit lane?
42:10Yeah, you know, you win some, you lose some.
42:12And this, this week, we're at the wrong end of the, wrong end of the pit lane.
42:15So the guys will scamper down there, I'm pretty sure.
42:19But there's a, there's a whole bunch of others who are going to do the same.
42:22So it's, it's going to be fraught, I think.
42:26And of course, a pit lane speed limiter as well.
42:28You can't, you, you can't abuse that.
42:31Otherwise, you'll be getting a penalty anyway.
42:33Yep.
42:33Yep, that's right.
42:34And there's a bit of an interpretation about, you know, when cars nudge into the fast lane and all the
42:40rest of it.
42:41So, yeah, I think this is going to be one of them ones where everyone's just going to get their
42:45elbows out and see where you get to.
42:47But it's a bit unfortunate because, you know, for everyone, because, like, nobody can actually show the true speed here.
42:54But it is what it is.
42:56Absolutely.
42:56Graham, thanks ever so much indeed.
42:58We're just seeing a replay.
42:59Fernando's lock-up.
43:01Maybe a bit too far over to the left-hand side.
43:04That's what calls the initial lock-up.
43:06A lot of drivers are out there.
43:09I think he's obviously just put a lot of pressure into the brake system.
43:15And it's just snatched the front axle.
43:18And, of course, then you lose the steering at that point.
43:20A tyre has to be rotating to give you grip.
43:25And if it's not rotating, the same on your road car, it won't give you grip.
43:29And it's very true.
43:30And there's no ABS on these, unlike your road car.
43:33So we saw Fernando kind of running away from the pit lane.
43:37He's found his way into the media interview pen.
43:39And he's right in front of Rachel Brooks.
43:41So we can hear from him now.
43:45Yep.
43:46Fernando looked pretty scary.
43:47Can you just tell me what happened?
43:49Yeah, I locked up the front.
43:50And, yeah, you're a passenger after that.
43:53And, yeah, there is no room to avoid anything here in Canada.
43:57So, yeah, too much on the limit.
43:59Anything going on in the car at all?
44:00It's not a usual mistake from you.
44:02Well, we are a little bit behind, you know, and we don't have the pace.
44:06So we are P14, I guess.
44:08So we were pushing seven, eight places more than what we should have.
44:15Yeah, pushing hard.
44:16And, sadly, not coming off, but through to SQ2.
44:20But I would imagine the car will be damaged sufficiently, so we can't take part in SQ2,
44:26even if they can bring it back home, which is not the work of a moment around this track.
44:30Yeah, you're not allowed to in qualifying, are you?
44:31If you're stuck out on the track, you're, that's it.
44:35Good night.
44:35Thank you.
44:36It's over.
44:36But, as you pointed out earlier on, it's probably going to give him a better qualifying position than he would
44:42normally have had.
44:43George Russell.
44:45Penny for George Russell's thoughts here.
44:47Yes, he had that moment on a flying lap where he ran through the runoff area, didn't get a chance
44:56to get another flying lap in.
44:58But, in the one comparison lap we can give, Antonelli was head and shoulders above him.
45:04Yeah, George was on a much better lap when he locked the brakes into the final chicane.
45:09So, I think he's in there somewhere, but I did a 10-minute interview with him yesterday, which we'll show
45:16on Sunday.
45:18He's very calm, very confident, and, you know, if he leaves this venue and Antonelli's beating him on speed again,
45:28if there's a long way to go on that, and George is very strong around here,
45:32I think that would be a major problem for him, because this is a track that George normally excels on,
45:37and he needs to just turn that around a little bit at the moment.
45:40I mean, it's not the end of the championship, but I think there's still at least five drivers in this
45:44world championship.
45:45It's going to be such a wild development race.
45:49But George needs to stop the sort of the Antonelli train, doesn't he?
45:54I don't think he's a driver that assumes just because he's got a younger teammate they are going to be
45:59inferior to him.
46:00But is that, if you've got more experience than your still kind of half-rookie teammate,
46:08subconsciously, do you think, well, I should be quicker than him?
46:11I think he would expect to make less mistakes over a given season, on a wet day or safety car
46:18restart, what have you.
46:20And that's certainly what I expect at the beginning of the season.
46:22And George turns up in Australia and sort of dominates it, really, in many respects, doesn't he, and looks so
46:27strong.
46:28But Kimi Antonelli, he's been fast, he's been relentless,
46:31and he hasn't cracked under pressure with the likes of Lando Norris on his tail in Miami last time out.
46:38But, Ted, what can you tell us?
46:40Just a couple of things from down here.
46:42First of all, whoever suggested earlier on the programme that Ferrari might not trouble the front row
46:47should have a word with themselves, Crofty.
46:50Ted, I'll give you the benefit here.
46:52They did, Ted.
46:54You were just reporting what they were saying.
46:55I was just reporting it.
46:56They told me.
46:56They told me we fully expect both Mercedes and both McLarens and maybe Max to be ahead of us.
47:01I'd go and have a little chat.
47:02So, well, what a mega lap that was from Lewis Hamilton.
47:05We'll see what Charles Leclerc has got in Sprint Qualifying 2.
47:10Yeah, just a word on the Audis.
47:13They were expecting a little bit more from this, I think.
47:16So you've got Bortoleto on the bubble, but Hülkenberg safely in.
47:20But they were expecting to be sort of top 10.
47:22So maybe that's a bit more speed to find from then.
47:25Instead, it looks like the Racing Bulls, or at least one of them,
47:28might take that best of the rest position with Alpine having, well,
47:33having something to say about it maybe in there as well.
47:35But, yeah, it looks like this Tech Pro, this delay is because they were almost ready to go, weren't they?
47:42But we believe down here, just looking at the course cars going through the pit lane,
47:47that the race directors just believe, Rui Marquez,
47:50just believe that with the deformities to that Tech Pro barrier,
47:55if there was another accident, then it wouldn't be doing its job properly.
47:59So it seems like they were ready to go,
48:02but they just need to replace those Tech Pro parts,
48:06those sort of plastic, big energy-absorbing panels.
48:09They need to replace them, and that's what's taking the time.
48:12I don't make the decisions, and I'm not down there to see what sort of state they were in.
48:16But when we saw the shot that everyone around the world saw,
48:19they didn't look, to be fair, like they were in the perfect position
48:23and the perfect setup to absorb any cars heading their way.
48:28Karun Chandok has headed towards the sky pad.
48:31He can take another look.
48:32Oh, before we go down there, an estimated time of resumption in five minutes,
48:39or actually four minutes' time and ten seconds.
48:42That doesn't mean the cars can leave the garages yet,
48:46not until they get an actual time for resumption.
48:49So, Karun, down to you, but stand by for a stampede in the pit lane
48:55if we do get that time in the next few moments.
48:59All right, you shout if you want me to throw it back upstairs.
49:02But let's just take a look at Alonso into turn one, Crofty.
49:04I noticed he was a little bit deep, didn't get onto that inside apex as well as he would like,
49:10got tight into the turn two entry there, tighter than he would like.
49:15So, already I don't think he had a great feeling with the brakes at turn one.
49:19Then we get up the hill, and you'll see just as he gets up for three,
49:25he's, you know, he's heading in that direction against, you know,
49:29he's sort of going that way, and obviously the next corner is going that way.
49:33So, he's trying to give himself the width, which is nothing unusual,
49:35and then gets the lockup just on the way in there.
49:38So, I can hear the engines firing up, but I'll just finish it up there.
49:41It has the lockup and goes straight on.
49:43Karun, I'm just going to interrupt for two seconds because we've got a resumption.
49:46It is going to be one minute to five o'clock, and whilst, yeah, that's better,
49:51we want to see the cars coming down the pit lane, headed by the Ferrari,
49:55which is safely through to the next part of qualifying.
49:58But is that Esteban Ocon behind Lewis Hamilton?
50:03We've got Carlos Sainz at the front.
50:05Lance Stroll has got himself into a very good position here.
50:10Quick off the blocks and might have the opportunity to get himself out of that bottom six.
50:16Then comes Lewis Hamilton, and then I think we've got Esteban Ocon.
50:20I think it's going to be a forlorn tale for those behind that.
50:24We'll see if anybody wants to play games and just dawdle out of the pit lane there,
50:28because I think anybody at the back then will miss the chance to start a flying lap.
50:33Yeah, I think the key one here would be, can Lance Stroll get to the line?
50:40And as long as you get to the line, before the chequered flag comes out,
50:43you can have a lap and a flying lap that will count.
50:48Pierre Gasly's not in a very good position there at all.
50:51He's actually behind the Cadillac of Sergio Perez, who's also along with him in that bottom six.
50:58Somehow, and there's Pierre Gasly, so that was Colin Pinto before.
51:02There's Gasly, there's Bottas.
51:05Cadillac have done well to get out ahead of Alpine there.
51:09Bortoletto, who's right on the cusp.
51:12Hülkenberg.
51:13Bortoletto, where's Olly Behrman?
51:16That's Ocon.
51:18Ocon, yeah.
51:19So Olly Behrman will be the one that'll be a bit worried, I think, to be honest.
51:24It's a tall order to get the tyres right, especially sitting at the end of the pit lane like this.
51:28Get the brakes in the zone, temperature-wise.
51:31Charge your battery up, but not too much.
51:34The mental overload of this next lap for those drivers will be massive.
51:38Well, this is where they need to rely on their engineer, who's got, you know, the data in front of
51:44them to say,
51:44right, just ease on this, a bit more on that, and almost, you know, coach them through the preparation lap.
51:53But it's going to have to be quite a quick one for some of them, isn't it?
51:55It's sort of not a typical preparation lap.
51:58What they do know is that they'll not be blocking anybody because nobody will start a lap.
52:03Having said that, they need to watch for somebody trying to just fly past them and grab the track position.
52:13It's going to be very tight.
52:15Yeah, everyone's going to be pushing, and I'm not sure how many cars will actually get it.
52:20The trouble is, if you push too much, you've not got enough energy when you cross the line in your
52:26battery
52:26to cope with what you need at the first sector.
52:30Yeah, but you can't, you know, to reiterate what I said earlier on, you can't go,
52:35yeah, that's enough, that'll do.
52:37We've had a decent run in SQ1.
52:40You know, if there's a chance to complete a flying lap, which there is by half a minute,
52:44you have to give them that opportunity.
52:46Otherwise, you're unfairly disadvantaging people.
52:50So, the order in the pit lane, Sainz, Stroll, Hamilton, Behrman, Ocon, Hülkenberg,
52:59Portoletto, Gasly, Perez, Colopinto.
53:03They're the ones that are going out, and I'd suggest that anything bar four of those might not make it.
53:09And then they're getting a hurry on Sainz and Stroll.
53:12And Lewis Hamilton, not quite as quick to get away.
53:16Are you surprised Hamilton's actually going out, given that he's got the fastest time?
53:21He obviously just wants to feel something else on what's now used,
53:24very used set of medium compound tyres.
53:28You're only allowed one set, of course, in SQ1,
53:31and another new set in SQ2 of the medium compound.
53:36So, if they've got flat spots or obviously they've taken some life out of them,
53:41and this is what we're going to see quite a bit of, I think, on this lap.
53:44Races on.
53:44A bit hustling around.
53:47That's Bottas, isn't it?
53:49Ahead of Sergio Perez.
53:52So the two Cadillacs having their own private little race there.
53:56Quite exciting, isn't it?
53:57It's great.
53:57Well, the tyres are going to be warm.
53:58If nothing else, I'm not sure how much battery they'll have left to be getting on with this.
54:04While this is going on, Sainz is out of the hairpin,
54:07Stroll's out the hairpin,
54:08and so Sainz has got 30 seconds to get to the line.
54:12But the last sector's 29 seconds that starts at the hairpin.
54:16So a lot of those cars are not going to make it.
54:20The one who could make it here will be Lance Stroll.
54:25Sainz is already safe if only he and Stroll get a lap in.
54:30Sainz is going to start his lap,
54:32but actually Stroll is the one that we want to be focusing on,
54:35the Montreal boy,
54:36because he's the one that can get out of the bottom six.
54:40Did he make it?
54:41Did Lewis get over the line?
54:43I don't think he did.
54:44The rest certainly haven't.
54:46So Bottas and Gasly and Perez are out.
54:50Hamilton did make it.
54:51Otherwise, it would say the chequered flag by his name at the top then.
54:55So we're still on board with Carlos Sainz.
54:58A 22-2 for Lance Stroll in the first sector is not particularly quick.
55:06Not quick at all, sadly,
55:07and I don't think that's going to be quick enough to get him out of that bottom six.
55:11So they've had a go here,
55:13but it's a bit of a forlorn chase.
55:17Yeah, so three cars got over the line then.
55:20The first three in the queue,
55:21and the others would have been halfway down the pit straight
55:26as those massive amount of red lights came on to break your heart.
55:31Yeah, so no green sector being set by Lance Stroll,
55:36who has backed off a little bit more during the middle part of the lap
55:40or just didn't have the energy.
55:41Sainz goes straight on, so this lap wouldn't count anyway.
55:45Kicks up a whole load of dirt.
55:47Bit of a damp squib to the end of qualified.
55:51Somebody else is wide as well.
55:53I think it was Lewis, wasn't it?
55:54Yeah, I think Stroll's bailed out of the lap.
55:57He's coming into the pits.
55:58There you go.
55:59Sadly, for the Montreal lad, he's not had a chance to get through.
56:02I think Lewis went across the runoff area as well.
56:04There was a lot of dust behind him,
56:06so nobody actually got a lap in after all that.
56:10Yeah.
56:10Well, they restarted it,
56:12but sadly there wasn't much point,
56:13although we should have gone a bit earlier.
56:16So I think we can be happy because we might.
