07:57nice
07:58well thank you
08:00amazing
08:00four months after selection
08:03they arrived at the airport
08:05having packed for every eventuality
08:08with no idea where in the world they were heading
08:11oh
08:11their destination revealed just hours before departure
08:16you'll be flying to
08:18palermo in sicily
08:20oh my god
08:21southern italy
08:22we're gonna have pizza tonight
08:24oh
08:25that's brilliant
08:26that's good
08:27that's good
08:27yeah
08:29in the historic city of palermo
08:31i'm actually really nervous
08:33can't they
08:34see me
08:34they all came face to face for the very first time
08:38here we go
08:39oh god they're looking fit and young
08:41good to meet you i'm margot
08:56the enemy lines now
08:57will we get this thing started
08:58yeah
08:59yeah
09:08when we first met you guys in palermo it was like that that couple minutes of hi guys and then
09:14it was off
09:14i don't think i was thinking anything other than i can't believe i'm here
09:18yeah
09:19yeah
09:19and i can't believe i'm about to do this and this backpack's heavy
09:22i hypnotized myself to believe that backpack was really light didn't i
09:25she did
09:26but as soon as i got home
09:27what the hell
09:30after the first leg i thought casey and harrison was just gonna blow us out the water
09:36you know day and a half ahead of the first leg you know it's unbelievable
09:40it was it was very intimidating to have you guys so far ahead because we didn't know anything about you
09:44you're a myth
09:47but then when we met you harrison you still impressed your understanding of budgeting and timings and and like this
09:54overview that was almost like a computer
09:56felt like that
09:57that couldn't turn out
09:58that is him yeah
10:01i've got a toiletry bag the size of a house
10:05yeah
10:06well i've got all the useful stuff i've got alarm clocks compass
10:10so you just bring you know the stuff you need and i'll bring the stuff for both of us
10:14yeah
10:14ooh this you're getting it now
10:17katie and older brother harrison started the race with very different attitudes to money and planning
10:24you definitely took the role with the budget
10:26you're in a deep emotional relationship with your calculator
10:30we have spent 8.5 percent this leg of our total budget
10:35which is very very good
10:38it works
10:39being a tight bastard works
10:43pocket meat and cheese
10:46really dry
10:48really drives an understatement
10:49like i've just stuck my face in the sahara desert
10:52i took it very personally as my responsibility to get us to that finish line
10:58and it kind of soothes me to constantly be on thinking about it
11:01aww look at this
11:03this is not good for the budget
11:04i've got a shot glass collection at home
11:07who buys all this shit
11:13that really took over for me like i just couldn't help but uh be absorbed by the race and the
11:18race environment and not the experiences
11:19although the race environment is about winning it's also about the unique way of traveling that you're doing by racing
11:27i genuinely loved every second of it you know i didn't maybe i didn't have that drive because i was
11:31just enjoying it so much like i just honestly had the best time ever
11:35i think everyone agree you were pure sunshine the whole way through
11:38i think one day you were like you were sitting with a glass of prosecco at checkpoint being like i
11:42could be at work on a monday
11:43no i'm not
11:46as they ventured further east katie's desire to pause and take it all in
11:51feels very much
11:53once in a lifetime
11:55started to shift harrison's perspective on the race
11:59i'm on a horse
12:01in kyrgyzstan
12:03it's incredible
12:04that is just ridiculous
12:07this is stunning
12:25this is stunning
12:28he's so chuffed with his picture of tesca
12:30i know
12:30such a lovely moment
12:32but funny
12:32why am i sat in a treehouse in turkey looking at a picture of tesca
12:35it was just an expression as well
12:36that was kind of when i sort of let go a little bit and stopped and started to appreciate and
12:43spend time with people and that's really where i came away with the sort of the mantra that okay this
12:46is actually what the race is about
12:47oh no no no no no no you sure
12:50what has he given you
12:53it's a medal
13:18it's a medal
13:23oh half marathon
13:23i haven't spent my own money yet on it
13:24yeah yeah yeah yeah
13:25but it might happen
13:26i'm guessing now you've learned that you it firstly it's not like a holiday
13:29well i call it a bit holiday sometimes maybe if you're doing it margo's way
13:35their growth as a team came from learning to open up to one another deepening a bond in ways katie
13:42had always wanted
13:44i don't know i feel i just felt like why is this affecting me and it's not affecting him like
13:49how does he seem so okay about it all
13:51i definitely think the race has helped me like verbalize like my feelings because before like i might have felt
14:01like i wanted to say something to you you know something bothering me if i was upset or something um
14:06but i physically could not get the words out
14:09whereas now i think because yeah the race is just a really intense environment and you've got to be supportive
14:15for each other
14:15i just wanted to say um like i suppose thank you for for being there and being
14:23well that's really nice to hear actually i now just feel a lot more supported
14:29yeah like the race gave me a better understanding of you and you a better understanding of me
14:33yeah but you do grow and you have to and it's a life experience and you have to accept it
14:37as a life experience and realize and take something from it and you did
14:41yeah
14:42yeah
14:43yeah
14:44okay got it it's a good one for your hinge profile harrison makes you look really cool
14:49i've got a man bag on there it feels like i'm going to plunge your toilet
14:52if it looks that bad could you please try and help me
14:58together come on
15:00oh my god well done my finish line
15:03we wouldn't have been able to have as good of a time with anyone else
15:07it was sort of the perfect combo and we've got that for life
15:10yeah this is breathtaking
15:14incredible
15:16oh wow look at that one i'll go
15:18the teams were on the road for 51 days
15:21absolutely incredible
15:23it's hard to find words isn't it
15:24it is absolutely yeah
15:26it's hard to find out
15:26with cameras recording their every move
15:29with them a five person team responsible for capturing the general views
15:34known as the gv crew who film the scale beauty and rich variety of the journey
15:42if i want to give up teaching there's one job i would want to have it's the crew they do
15:47all those picturesque shots and what a job to be able to do
15:50we're shooting athens out today we've been up here since half six this morning
15:56big bank of cloud came in and kind of killed us a little bit
15:59well sometimes it helps it came out and like created all these shadows across the city
16:04but thankfully the weather has picked up
16:06the sun is shining
16:12the team that take these incredible shots really get to be creative and think about how to capture this beautiful
16:20area in the best way possible
16:21which is what you see on the screens so they essentially inspire the whole of the uk and whoever watches
16:28the race across the world to want to go to these places by the way they capture it on camera
16:34wow look at this
16:36we're going to shoot this time-lapse over the mountains it is beautiful here the landscape is incredible
16:47and it's actually they've got so much stuff right
16:49they've got long distance cameras wide shot lenses they've got close-ups they've got everything
16:55yeah they smashed it
17:00alongside the gv crew there are three more vital teams dovetailing seamlessly to bring the race to life
17:07comms check
17:10in london a 20-strong team of producers researchers and production management
17:16following evolving stories and potential routes
17:19you've got someone who is relaying back every decision everything we say to the head office in london
17:26who obviously on uk time
17:29it feels like the brain of
17:32control center control center
17:34there you go i'm thinking about it medically but they're like the brain of race across the world
17:38and then you have like the limbs in
17:41on location a small embedded filming crew living and breathing every step of the race with each pair
17:48how are you feeling
17:49i think that's your duvet aaron
17:53that's the smaller one the bigger one should be the sheer
17:55oh
17:56you're gonna put your lavender spray on it
18:00and finally the checkpoint crew
18:03who are one step ahead of the racers
18:05tracking their every move
18:07and planning for all eventualities
18:10i've got joe and kush
18:11i've got 10 a.m. do you think that's right
18:13yeah i think about 60 minutes away
18:15there's a whole team that stays in the checkpoint and they've got their own job to do
18:19if they go the most efficient way they'll get a car all the way up to there
18:23but there are various other points that they could get dropped on the hill
18:27they are responsible for setting up and testing the final run to each new checkpoint hotel
18:34oh my god
18:36hi families
18:40and there to support each team on their arrival
18:46oh
18:46say hi hannah
18:47give me the camera
18:49what's your role hannah
18:51my role is to look after cars when they're at checkpoint
18:54make sure they're fed
18:56watered
18:56happy
18:57healthy
18:57that's it
19:00once the planning's done
19:01it's over to the race
19:04unpredictable
19:06unscripted
19:06and whatever happens whenever teams arrive
19:09the crew has to be ready
19:11we are here at the finale location
19:13um
19:13and we are just waiting for one of the teams to come in
19:16where the spit is
19:18there's a direct line of sight
19:19so we don't want the cars to see us
19:21so we're having to lie down
19:22and hide
19:23voiced for the signal
19:28okay go go go go go
19:29everyone
19:31that is a spit isn't it
19:33yeah
19:34when you're coming in to checkpoint
19:36it gets really exciting doesn't it
19:38ah here we go
19:40hello
19:41i'm about to have sent messages
19:43into these devices for the runway
19:45the queues
19:46it goes
19:50find the amphitheatre
19:52and the way for the instructions
19:53need to find them in at rare
19:55i think it's at the other side of the bridge
19:57yeah
19:58okay ready power everything up
20:03is this right?
20:04yeah
20:04oh
20:06there are two blocks in there
20:08yeah
20:12bonnie
20:14bonnie
20:14it's here
20:15margot it's here
20:16yes
20:16it's all that things fired
20:18copy that we're rolling
20:20here it is job
20:25please
20:25silence here
20:28what
20:44as the checkpoint is approached the reality of each precious minute falls into focus
20:50lads we're gonna beat you
20:52no way
20:54come on Mark
20:55with every team throwing their all into the chance to climb the leaderboard
21:00hey go speed up lad
21:02you okay Poshy?
21:03i'm good Poshy
21:04faster faster
21:05we've got a checkpoint to get to
21:07get me out of this taxi and ready to run
21:10traffic jump
21:12it just felt like tables turned so quickly
21:16we can't afford to make any mistakes and we've already made one
21:19the crew can give you absolutely no help and it can be like very easy to go like
21:23guys you're giving me nothing here but they can't because then it's not fair
21:27this is actually a joke
21:29but that's what's going on because they don't know
21:32they had to walk through every stupid decision we made knowing we were going in the wrong direction
21:37actually we're kind of going back on ourselves
21:39yeah
21:40oh god
21:42but having the lead is one bus journey away
21:45big money moves
21:46big money moves right little money moves
21:47it's right there
21:49yes Poshy
21:50come on
21:51hope and pray now
21:55we were looking out for the boys because we noticed you becoming more savvy and more competitive
22:00because you said from the first we're in it we're really seriously in it to win it
22:04but there was more and more like we're not going to talk to you you could be a threat
22:08and and it was these guys
22:09you guys because you're clever that thing both views are very very like
22:12but quite quickly you were like zoom
22:14here are the boys
22:15how are we
22:16do you know where you're going now
22:18yeah
22:18all right you guys you got a plan
22:19yeah
22:20we have a plan yeah
22:21are we allowed to know where you're heading to
22:24they're trying to present funds
22:25they're trying to get information out
22:27see you boys
22:28we'll see you guys soon
22:29see you
22:30oh no best friends last night
22:33sworn enemies
22:33Jack
22:34whoa
22:34oh
22:36we were there to win really
22:37we are
22:38we were there
22:38I've been saying this from the start
22:39we both were saying this from the start
22:41we were there to win
22:42we were there to win
22:42we were there to win
22:43you just want to do better than everyone else
22:45oh we brought back some money
22:47five and sixty
22:48wait
22:50we're ten short
22:51is there any way we could change money
22:52I don't know
22:53where
22:54there was a situation where
22:56Molly and Andrew were ten euros short
22:58you wouldn't give us a tenner for a tenner no
23:00oh that's a shame
23:01thought that
23:02that's a shame
23:03and I was like nah realistically
23:05we're here to win
23:06I feel like we should
23:07help them all
23:08no
23:08old lad what are you trying
23:10you were very very
23:11down to
23:12to just lend them a bit of money
23:14I'm
23:14I'm glad we didn't give any money
23:16I'm glad
23:17set a precedent
23:18100%
23:20I would very much say that
23:21your experience was to win
23:23and you really enjoyed it
23:24and the whole way through
23:25we were very competitive obviously
23:26but we
23:28were forced
23:29we were trying our hardest
23:29we were still coming in
23:31and
23:32like we were constantly
23:33back of the pack
23:34back of the pack
23:34and it was about staying in it
23:35people talk about strategies
23:37if we had any strategy coming into this
23:39was to stay in the game
23:40as long as possible
23:41and then try and win it at the end
23:42and that's what we did
23:44yeah
23:44were you two right behind each other
23:46at the final
23:47not speaking to you again
23:48that's it
23:50it's alright
23:50that's okay
23:51the gloves are off
23:53no
23:54but there's a good
23:55good amount of luck
23:56and like I think like
23:57the favourite moments for me
23:59and it sounds so sad
24:00but it was when like
24:01connecting transport
24:02just worked out
24:03honest to God
24:04like I
24:05I just couldn't relax
24:06until I knew what
24:07transport was going on
24:08elimination leg
24:09mr. meany
24:10made us wait for a bus
24:11I decided on budget terms
24:13that we should wait
24:14and get the bus
24:15rather than pay the taxi
24:16and we waited
24:17three
24:18three and a half hours
24:19three and a half hours
24:19for a bus
24:20you should have waited 12
24:26smile
24:27oh
24:30your shoes get wet
24:31wet shoes
24:32I love my feet right now
24:33they're very happy
24:36the cousins embarked on the race
24:38to step away from the busy careers
24:40they'd worked hard to build
24:41and embrace a more unpredictable way of life
24:46pepperoncino
24:47calabrese
24:48this is different
24:49rosh is absolutely smashing it
24:52she's maintained her energy levels
24:54look at her she's so cute
24:57quanta
25:02what are you doing
25:03oh no
25:03yes you can
25:04yes you can
25:06yes you can
25:08so growing up you know
25:09we lived like two streets away
25:11we were like very close
25:13but life happens
25:14I think the goal of just going on to this
25:17is we'd both been in our careers for like 10 years
25:20um
25:21so life gets very intense
25:22and we wanted to do something about that
25:26this guy
25:26he is a guard of the gods
25:29okay he's waving
25:31I've always wanted to take time off
25:33but there's always been a reason not to
25:34so I guess race kind of forced us to take the time off
25:37and it kind of
25:38it showed that it's not the end of the world
25:42where are you going
25:43ah
25:44oh sorry
25:46what time is the buff
25:48yes
25:49yes
25:50i'm feeling pumped
25:52we're flying high
25:53i think we've handled ourselves really well on this leg
25:56i'm excited posh
25:58we're second
26:00we're second
26:01we're second
26:03it's been a wake up call
26:05with family you always think people are going to be around
26:07but actually you need to put in that effort to make sure
26:10you keep that relationship
26:12and you know we just we wanted to make sure this didn't break us
26:15and it's actually made us stronger
26:17yeah
26:19but their momentum faltered in turquia
26:22we asked about buses tonight but unfortunately there wasn't anything available
26:25it gives the other teams time to catch up
26:28and arriving in last at the third checkpoint led to their surprise elimination
26:33please sign in overleaf
26:35oh
26:36oh my god
26:37we're lost
26:39oh
26:41oh
26:42oh
26:43oh
26:43oh
26:43oh
26:47oh
26:48oh
26:48there's some good fun
26:48ready for the book
26:48we didn't expect
26:50that everybody
26:51would have done so well on that leg
26:54but you guys aced it
26:55but saying that there was a great leg
26:57like we had an incredible time
26:59and honestly Mongolia was for you guys like I'm so happy that you guys had that adventure
27:05thank you
27:06also we got to go in our own adventure
27:08yeah
27:09we went on a trip to Vietnam after all of this ended
27:14it was just a great place way we got to have really good food get massages yeah we just had
27:24our own experience we plan to go away together again with our husbands with our families so
27:31if this had not happened i don't think we would be doing that i don't think we would be as
27:36proactive yeah you think about like what race and travel has given each one of us
27:41that has brought you together and like my wife has said me like who are you traveling with all that
27:46kind of thing and i'd say like beautiful girl who's an anesthetist and i go i just want molly
27:51to turn out like you and i mean that just amazing and lifelong friends hopefully and absolutely
27:58we missed you though honestly we wanted to sign your names in the book as well oh
28:10that is amazing for all the teams this was a journey defined by endurance and extremes
28:17look look look oh that is really nice you can see the whole coast from the sun-baked coastlines
28:23of europe to the untamed expanse of central asia oh my god
28:30look at this it is like the wild west mark look at it isn't it yeah
28:35into the sub-zero temperatures of mongolia
28:38oh feel the cold
28:42retracing a path steeped in history along the old silk road
28:46they encountered a huge variety of people and local customs
28:52my father oh hello nice to meet you hello hello hello nice to meet you
28:57what are we going to do
29:00oh my god
29:01oh my god
29:02oh my god
29:03oh my god
29:07it's just such a like extreme is it like you just started off in like central mainland europe
29:13where that you had all the comforts really of home and and then going to just
29:18it literally millenore it's mad
29:20once you left europe yes and wake to kazakhstan it was an alien environment it was rocky it
29:29was dry it was arid and from that point yeah it was a completely different journey but even
29:35from the trains did you you must have got to see like scenery nothing there's absolutely nothing
29:39what it's like being on the moon i can't describe it there is nothing there
29:44you really throughout the whole experience went from one to the other
29:50done
29:51it went from language to no language
29:53do you have avto um car machine avto avto
29:59lots of transport to no transport yeah the bus it's all closed yeah
30:04closed yes
30:05i found the bus station it's just a shed
30:09holy moly
30:10traffic jam
30:12look at them there's millions of them
30:14yeah i i'd say this year race is very much extreme
30:17that's the word to sum it up
30:19yeah
30:19i think it's just so nice that you just you're worried that ah they don't speak the same
30:24language but you find a way to communicate like whether it's you dancing with everyone
30:28or
30:29you know our man with the tesco like you you like
30:33you find your common ground
30:34you'll always find a way to communicate that was like the most beautiful thing
30:38yeah yeah
30:38when we did all these homestays like to live and sleep on the same roof share the food like
30:44this is such a privilege it's even more of a privilege in my eyes than being able to afford
30:48like the five-star hotels no they treated us like family
30:57oh my god
30:59you've done that so well thank you
31:02places that we went we were very different to the western world it was a real it was a
31:06culture shock in the coolest way this is a really big deal oh my god
31:11there's an eagle hello nice to meet you my name is nazgud
31:15nazgud
31:16kush it's nice to meet you
31:18you're i'm so beautiful
31:20thank you
31:23i love the outfits this is what i think we're both searching for on in this journey as a whole
31:28is the experiences that aren't readily accessible
31:36it's very bitter
31:38i quite like it
31:39delicious look at him delicious
31:41good he's very good
31:42yeah
31:45but when we got to mongolia it really got hard for us we really struggled
31:51it felt like your choices were kind of taken away from you because at the start it was kind
31:56of do you go by boat do you go by train do you go by car do you go by
31:59taxi it then just became
32:00get there you couldn't be competitive with each other you were just being competitive against mongolia
32:05yeah
32:05it's the best way to put it is that you were fighting the elements
32:08i think like the temperature swing the whole way we figured out was like a 54 degree temperature
32:12swing from hottest to coldest and it's just i was looking forward to the the cold
32:17but maybe not that cold
32:19maybe i maybe i wish too hard for that
32:21like your clothes had to change
32:23your clothes for italy greece
32:27and wild temperatures and then all of a sudden those clothes just kind of
32:31you should have just thrown them out
32:32we couldn't
32:32just throw them out had less weight to carry
32:34no just layering up just layering up
32:36mongolia just wore the same outfit every single day
32:39yes i did yes
32:39and all your clothes
32:40yeah honestly did any change your clothes in mongolia
32:44yes i didn't
32:45no
32:47but as somebody who's only kind of really gone on family holidays
32:50yeah
32:50i really really struggled with the the
32:54did i have the ability to put a backpack on me
32:57and travel in that way
32:59always wanted to do it as a child
33:00always wanted to do it as a young person
33:02i never did it
33:04because it was pure want to do it
33:05yes
33:05but it was a fear
33:06it kind of stopped you doing it before
33:08it was a physical test as well as a mental test
33:12one of the reasons i did lack self-confidence in my ability to do it was the heart attack
33:18and the heart attack put me back kind of mentally quite a bit
33:23i'm starting off in sicily
33:24yeah
33:24my god it'd be amazing
33:28for andrew the race became a way to see the world
33:31look at that molly absolutely stunning
33:34and prove his heart attack three years ago
33:37wouldn't hold him back
33:39i would always say to children
33:40er in in class the world's your oyster go and enjoy it
33:45but i never lived it and i was always kind of a bit of a fraud that way
33:49you
33:50whew
33:52jesus
33:56you're sweating for me
33:58the relief of getting to that first checkpoint
34:02yeah
34:02and signing that book
34:04yeah
34:04give me the shot in the arm
34:06i looked at you and said we can do this
34:07the stamina's there
34:08and we can enjoy it as well
34:10and we can enjoy it
34:12it's my first train in italy molly
34:14you know my love of trains
34:16look at the striations of the rock the way they're going down the lines
34:18oh my god look
34:20never seen these before ever
34:23different way of doing it
34:24total different way of doing beekeeping
34:25and there's your honey
34:27seeing the mountains
34:28seeing the landscape
34:29seeing where people live
34:30that's what i do
34:31that's what i love
34:34really looking forward to getting out in the kayak
34:36i have my own kayak
34:38at home
34:39but i've never actually used it because of my er
34:41dicky ticker
34:42my dicky ticker
34:43so er
34:44haven't been able to do it so
34:45yeah
34:46it'd be lovely
34:50woo
34:51out the open water
34:53look at those mountains
34:55ha ha ha ha ha
35:02i've wanted to do that for a long time kid
35:05to prove to me
35:07that i could er
35:10that wasn't gonna get me
35:13sorry cat
35:22it was so nice to kind of have the kayaking and like just that whole thing to us was just
35:28really
35:28special like you kind of have to cherish those moments it's very important to cherish those
35:33moments just enjoy it and that's i think i tried to say that to everyone i absolutely enjoy it
35:37we've actually been kayaking since i've actually booked a trip we're going to uh norway with my wife
35:45i think that whole rocky coast all the way up there would be unbelievable yeah and we've booked
35:52kayaking in the fjords oh wow that'll be beautiful i don't want to be stuck in a train station for
36:01molly
36:02the race was an opportunity to find her own path in life and prove her independence
36:07is there a bus to kiva bus no taxi taxi taxi i don't know what to do i don't know
36:14before the race i
36:16would have found it very difficult those big decisions i would have overthought it i would
36:21have i would have got annoyed myself especially if it went wrong i don't want 100 i want 70 70
36:2870
36:33well done good call yeah i do think now i am a wee bit more self-confident that contentment has
36:41come
36:41with my decisions people need their doctor to be confident because that's who you're looking to
36:46for answers so it's really nice to sleep at night and not have thoughts and thoughts and thoughts and
36:52thoughts it was a definite changing molly towards the end yeah there was a strong sense of more
36:58confidence yeah and more decidedness
37:18i think pre-race we kind of proved to each other and like in life we've proved to each other
37:23we're
37:23good as father and daughter and i think race the one thing that allowed us to prove to each other
37:28is
37:28we're a good team and that is we can make decisions we can have equal opinion and hold each other
37:35and
37:35be like yeah no that's good that's bad and communicate we've done we did it we did it all right
37:40come right we're sad yeah we're sad
37:49still be her daddy for the rest of my life yeah but also it'll be uh it'll be more of
37:53a of a friendship
37:54and a pile yeah absolutely there's features of beauty isn't there yeah it's good stone look mega
38:05also looking to strengthen their bond and find a new dynamic in-laws mark and margo
38:11oh wow i'd love to have a go at one of these i know you come on you get one
38:16i get one
38:19hmm going with mark though i i really wanted this but i i there was a little bit we weren't
38:24completely comfortable were we not at all no uh i found her annoying margo thought i was a boring
38:33old fogey basically judgy and boring judgy and boring yes yeah you may all know julie's last dying
38:39wish was that we became friends we continued and build on our friendship and that's what we did
38:45i love naples absolutely great i i hate it i love naples i just didn't enjoy it at all
38:53i did think how's it going to go with mark how are we going to be on the race and
38:58i have to say some
38:58people were a little bit doubtful about the two of us doing it together they were a little bit why
39:04are
39:04you going with mark what in god's name it's a white cocoon what what's it for what did you what
39:11what
39:12it's modesty so i think it was ridiculous but as the race progressed we didn't have a care in
39:20the world did we not care in the world yeah try hitting it flat on like that oh okay okay
39:32now we're talking now we are talking
39:39we're just two people enjoying the moment yeah and we were just having a a bit of a laugh weren't
39:45we really we were yes and it just organically just grew
39:52hey the last two legs of it was so hard in mongolia that's when the real it was the real
39:59cement
39:59between us because it's that's when it was we we were on our knees and we just yeah and we
40:04needed
40:04each other and we both needed to really pull together didn't we and support each other yeah
40:13nope it's not the busiest of highways is it no if you miss a rush hour
40:19we had to suffer i think we had to suffer and push and strive for it really to be the
40:27adventure
40:27that it was and for it to truly make us unite and and have each other's back we're doing blue
40:35sky
40:35thinking today that's all we can do you know this determination to finish a side of margot i'd never
40:42seen before it's what kept me going just about do you go to harcorden yes oh god so kind thank
40:50you
40:50off we go we're doing it our way and we never ever give up as a team we've always forged
40:56on
40:57we've always forged on and i'm so proud of for doing that you know i would have given up i
41:03would
41:03have given up without margot being there i wouldn't give up on you though mark and he wouldn't and that
41:08so that was that and that's a sign of friendship uh here's to you julia wherever you are yeah
41:15who inspired us who inspired us thank you julia yeah thank you julia she's laughing
41:23for margot traveling was also an opportunity to step away from her day-to-day routine
41:30part of coming on the race was like running away from real life and just enjoying myself
41:35and just be me for a change and just go let rip taking respite from her responsibilities
41:41like caring for her elderly mum since i've got back from the race i've been more centered i did feel
41:49like dorothy coming back in the wizard of arts you know coming home and there is no place like home
41:53i was kind of in a way running away from my situation in life but now actually the determination i
42:01was applying to those challenges i've applied them to my life the bbc bbc yes race across the world
42:10to make things nicer to make things easier and so i'm living that best life but in liverpool oh my
42:18goodness for mark the race also became something more oh my gosh
42:25shifting his perspective on life itself it's unbelievable this wildness it's strange to say
42:33you know at 67 i was always embarrassed about doing things of what people might say what people might
42:39think i just don't couldn't care less now anyway because margot she's very open and very free and
42:45doesn't worry what people think about her and i've taken that on board you were first on the dance floor
42:50in sri lanka as well he led he led the party oh it was yes yeah the bailer yeah you
42:57know for us
42:57we were winners because we don't want to set out to do and we'd won for julia that was the
43:02thing
43:03yes yes we are good good friends we're mates now we are yeah do you think you'd go on holiday
43:08again
43:10well we've been talking about it yes we have been talking about it and we'd like adventure we do
43:15want to be we we are definitely up for adventure like it's so nice that you have that relationship
43:19together and you've built that for julia like wherever she is now i'm sure she's very happy to
43:25see you both like this it's almost like she was on the race with you yeah she was on the
43:29race yeah
43:30yeah it's a lovely legacy lovely legacy
43:40arriving in mongolia the filming teams faced one of the toughest environments the race had come up
43:47against navigating extreme weather and limited infrastructure after months of meticulous planning
44:01planning of mongolia it must have been a huge endeavor for everyone we're here we're mongolia
44:06it's all very exciting we've got this massive map of uh the country that our level fixers have um
44:11lent us and we basically have just got all of the stops and the potential places we think that the
44:17cars might be headed we just need to make sure we know where all the teams are at all times
44:22to ensure safety production members keep the teams trackable and in sight whenever they travel by car
44:28and what are called follow vehicles so this is day 42 of race across the world and i'm in our
44:37sv
44:38following the cast and crew they are they are over here i'm currently wrangling yesterday's rushes
44:47this is my office at the final two weeks of race and this just feels like an absolute privilege and
44:56pleasure to be here filming this it's in the middle of nowhere but anyway we're in muggle there i actually
45:03currently can't hear them because we've got so many devices plugged into we've got walkies we've got
45:10phones we've got garments currently the only way we can contact the sv is with our garmin so yes we're
45:19on our
45:28road right weather again we may need six twenty minus 25 degrees it's going to be called stay
45:35covered properly yeah let's stay warm well
45:43while we're in here in mongolia it's cold during the day and even colder at night so we need quick
45:48access to extra layers after sunset from italy to mongolia we've gone from plus 30 down to minus 30
45:55which in itself brings new problems where italy was sunburn here it's hypothermia
46:03to battle the sub-zero conditions everyone on the ground had to be equipped with extreme cold weather gear
46:10this is where we slept last night but the stove was off it's exceptionally lots of layers on
46:16it is quite extreme here the worst part of the entire night was doing snoring guys that's such a
46:21fib that is your snoring your snoring it's colder than than i had expected there about you the coats
46:28we had the outfits like we'd put your hood up and pull the zip ties and you'd literally have a
46:34little
46:34space like this to look through like it was it was it was fun yeah but i think i think
46:40i grossly
46:41underestimated how cold it was going to be ending in mongolia was just crazy it is so cold
46:49yeah oh my god where are you going you know i have a clue there's just such vastness and
46:57so many random things can happen so for the crew the amount of planning needed to try and get 10
47:03idiots to race across the world is insane i mean when we when we started uh this whole journey we
47:14was all we always said we were like when we travel we want to live it but me and joe
47:18have never really
47:18we spent some time together being like little holidays but it's never been more than like
47:21what like a week two weeks we've ever spent at the same time and so it was nothing to what
47:26i'd imagined
47:28this is important oh slides are shiny and these comfort comfort is your best friend those are old
47:36man shoes down there those are old man shoes oh eager to make every second count fresh out of college
47:43joe and cush wanted to explore life beyond the familiar world they were raised in by their mums in
47:49liverpool this is our plan this is our security which i'm going to be taken charge of
47:55so we still need to be on it with kush sometimes because we've got our passports yeah yeah excuse
48:02me what are you trying to say love pool's a small place we've gone up to city don't get me
48:07wrong but
48:08it's kind of like you still don't scale it's how probably the world is i mean coming into this once
48:14we applied we realized we are probably going to be the youngest so i think with youth comes this uh
48:20this
48:20preconception of like a lack of maturity um lack of life experience we see ourselves as the underdogs
48:28we see ourselves as the yeah the least capable and i think it's flipped in it
48:34yes 3am in the morning i don't think any teams could have done it faster
48:42don't judge a book by his cover i think one thing about me and joe is we actually we're good
48:46at different
48:46things we work well with what the other person lacked is and like me i'm i sort of overthought a
48:51lot and i was like oh we have to do with everything and think of it in a specific way
48:54and some and joe
48:55would be like no just act do so that's where i would have probably held us back if i kept
49:00trying to
49:00plan everything i would still be in palermo if i if i if you weren't there but you you're behind
49:08the
49:08strategy you're like you're very calculated and i think i focus too much on the present whereas you look
49:14so far into the future it helped me see the finish line if that made if that makes sense actually
49:20joe and kush i feel like you make the mistakes at the beginning and you learn from those mistakes
49:25early on and then you ace it for the final round which is what i think you guys basically did
49:31try
49:31their best yeah especially being being last days a kick is a kick up the kick up the ass
49:35you know what i mean although he sustained a drive to succeed uzbekistan this way she doesn't know
49:43he's gone oh my days kush struggled with his mental health we need to do for this price in no
49:52way
49:52oh i feel sick i think the race was probably the peak of my of my strolls when i was
50:00losing the most
50:02sleep the risk of making one wrong choice had such a impact you have a lot to worry about i'm
50:10gonna be
50:10thinking the entire night been such a rough day i had a lot of reminders of my dad and it
50:17dug up a lot
50:17of feelings that i hadn't dealt with we can still do this god we just can't give up i think
50:27a lot of the
50:27race involves how you cope with stress because if you let the stress get to you you will break and
50:34you can literally you could go home and you can't expect to go on a journey and expect it to
50:38be all
50:39fine but i know you're benefiting from venting just talking yeah
50:47i just really appreciate the fact that joe's always up for for sort of looking after me in a way
50:58so yeah i mean he is he's my best mate
51:05but yeah we we kept each other saying we we we kept moving
51:11oh come bro final spin and we never gave up once
51:18what wait how did we do that bro
51:24i've started seeing a weekly counsellor just to help process my emotions and i think it's really
51:28really helped nothing to do with the race just in day-to-day life and now i can learn to
51:32handle
51:32myself a lot better but it's about learning yeah it likes learning and life's about learning and
51:37learning as you make as you go on better learning now when you're younger yeah and when you're 67
51:44the one thing the race did teach as well is it is actually okay to ask for help i mean
51:47we couldn't
51:48have done it without asking for only hundreds of people helped us on our journey okay i'm gonna pay
51:54them what are you serious yeah oh my god oh my god oh my god thank you so much you've
52:01been so much
52:02help don't say we can stay at his house what like to be stop in yakino out of your fire
52:08in a family
52:09how many time a week do you eat sardine five five time a week is that very strong yeah yes
52:15no gym no no
52:16you need nothing the people they met and the confidence they gained from them inspired joe to
52:26travel independently taking his first solo trip to the gambia i think yeah the the race definitely
52:33encouraged me to continue traveling i don't think i would have gone to gambia without it i had to get
52:38in contact with this family who owned a farm and they look for travelers to come help them work
52:45and in return they get food a shelter and a family to chill with and that's what i did and
52:51i did i explained how i wanted to explore explore my heritage and i think they they resonated with
52:59that they were they were very caring what would you like to do next what do you fancy doing we've
53:05got no no real plan at the moment in terms of if the future but i know that we both
53:09are going to
53:09travel we don't know where yet but yeah it's gonna happen at 19 years old you
53:14guys have accomplished something so major in your life i wish i was doing the stuff like this when
53:19i was 19. i was just revising for exams that's my whole life honestly so proud of you so proud
53:27of
53:27you from the bottom of our hearts genuinely let's go let's go this is it bro
53:37it was tough and it's amazing to know that we we can get through it and uh succeed three two
53:45one
53:53i feel this race is bigger than the degree you're you're actually joking
54:06the biggest thing i've taken from the race is that uh life's to be lived and go and enjoy it
54:12it's not all be all end all yeah like there is another way and actually the winds end up being
54:18a
54:18lot sweeter because you've dealt with the low you can just do whatever you want and the world is there
54:23to be seen and put your phone down and actually listen to people can i take you into school and
54:30say
54:32i've got a question for everyone would would you do it again yeah absolutely absolutely yeah i'd pay
54:40a lot of money a lot of money to do it again oh nice
