Trump and Putin's meetings with Chinese leader deliver markedly different messages

On the surface, Chinese leader Xi Jinping's back-to-back summits with U.S. President Donald Trump and Russia's Vladimir Putin looked pretty similar but the visits also revealed how different China's relationship is with the two countries.

00:00Two world leaders, two very different messages from Beijing.
00:03In back-to-back visits, both Donald Trump and Vladimir Putin called Xi Jinping a friend
00:08and pledged closer ties with China.
00:10But beneath the handshakes, the contrast was clear.
00:14Trump focused on trade and strategic competition,
00:16while Putin doubled down on deep political and economic alignment from Beijing.
00:21I think the main difference we see between Trump's meeting with Xi and Putin's meeting with Xi
00:26is that I think that there are more affinity between Putin and Xi
00:32and more, I think, more courtesy between Xi and Trump.
00:41Xi and Putin oversaw the signing of more than 40 cooperation deals,
00:45expanding ties across trade, technology and media,
00:48a powerful display of deepening China-Russia alignment.
00:53On the substantial, substance is different.
00:55And I think it's much more clear, right?
00:57You see, like, China and Russia reach more agreement, right?
01:01And China and U.S., like, what are the agreements?
01:04That is even a question.
01:05We don't even see that clear.
01:10Unlike Putin's visits, Trump and Xi signed no major deals in Beijing,
01:14with agreements only announced after Trump departed.
01:19China is at the middle.
01:21It has its own relation.
01:22We can develop the strategic stability, constructive stability with U.S.
01:27and develop the new partnership, enhancing partnership with Russia at the same time.
01:34But you don't see on the bottom line here that Russia and U.S. have more in common.
01:39So I think this meeting elevates President Xi and also China as the major power.
01:45Global leaders are recalibrating ties with Beijing
01:48as analysts say the world is shifting from U.S. dominance
01:51towards a more multi-polar order with China at the center.
