00:20A terrifying mid-air confrontation between NATO and Russia has just been revealed.
00:27British military officials now say Russian fighter jets came dangerously close to a Royal Air Force surveillance aircraft over the
00:37Black Sea, in what London is calling a reckless and unacceptable provocation.
00:42According to the UK Ministry of Defence, the incident happened in mid-April, during a routine NATO reconnaissance mission.
00:50The aircraft involved was an unarmed Boeing RC-135 rivet joint, operated by the RAF's No. 51 Squadron.
01:00The plane was flying in international airspace, collecting signals intelligence as part of NATO operations along the alliance's eastern flank.
01:09But what happened next could have ended in disaster.
01:13British officials say two Russian military aircraft, a Sukhoi Su-35 and a Sukhoi Su-27, began aggressively intercepting the
01:23British aircraft.
01:24And according to the Ministry of Defence, the maneuvers became extremely dangerous.
01:29In one incident, the Su-35 reportedly flew so close that it triggered emergency systems on the RAF plane, temporarily
01:38disabling the aircraft's autopilot.
01:41Then came an even more alarming moment.
01:44British officials say the Su-27 carried out six separate high-speed passes, coming within just six metres, roughly 20
01:53feet, of the rivet joint's nose.
01:55That distance, at military jet speeds, is razor-thin.
02:00A single mistake, a sudden movement or turbulence, could have triggered a catastrophic collision.
02:07UK Defence Secretary John Healy called the Russian maneuvers dangerous and unacceptable.
02:13The UK Ministry of Defence has also released footage and images documenting the encounter.
02:19This is now considered one of the most serious confrontations between Russian aircraft and RAF surveillance missions since a 2022
02:28incident where a Russian jet reportedly fired a missile near a British reconnaissance plane.
02:34So far, Russian officials have not issued detailed comments.
02:38But such intercepts have become increasingly common, as NATO surveillance flights continue near Russian-controlled or contested regions.
02:47The Black Sea remains one of the world's most volatile military flashpoints.
02:52Since the war in Ukraine escalated, NATO has expanded patrols, air policing missions, and intelligence operations across Eastern Europe.
03:01Russia, meanwhile, views many of these flights as direct threats near its sphere of influence.
03:06The skies over the Black Sea remain tense, and this latest encounter is a reminder of just how close NATO
03:14and Russia continue to fly to the edge.
