00:03This time on Golfing the World, we celebrate summer in New England with a special golf trip to the beautiful
00:09destination of Old Cape Cod.
00:14Three amazing municipal courses in the Cape Cod town of Yarmouth.
00:20First, we visit the Lynx at Bayberry Hills, a stunning new track that combines all the elements of Lynx golf.
00:28Then we take a look at the championship course at Bayberry Hills, one of the old classics that make Cape
00:35Cod golf so special.
00:37And finally, we head over to the Bass River Golf Course, an old Donald Ross design, both fun and challenging,
00:46always special.
00:50Grab your clubs, we're heading down the Cape, this time on Golfing the World.
01:05We have played Bayberry Hills before, but this was our first deep look at the new nine-hole Lynx course.
01:13What they have developed here is nothing short of amazing.
01:16It feels and plays, isolated and unique, visually stunning with windswept fescue outlining the entire course.
01:25Surprisingly long and great bunker placement.
01:37Here we meet local ambassador of golf, Mr. Dennis Foy.
01:41He was number one on the team in two weeks.
01:42Yeah.
01:43And since then you just wrote it out.
01:46Yep.
01:46I've been in golf ever since.
01:52So this is our nine-hole Lynx course at Bayberry Hills.
01:56Last year we put a $3 million renovation project in here.
01:59We redid all the bunkers in the golf course, reshaped some of the holes and made it much more playable.
02:06New irrigation system and it came out beautifully and we're very proud of what's going on with it.
02:11It's stunning just being out here today.
02:13I can see it's been done recently and it's really showing off in the sunlight today.
02:18It's going to be a lovely round.
02:19I'm excited.
02:19Yeah, no, it's a beautiful place and it's completely different, this nine-hole is in our regulation 18 up top.
02:25It's just a different layout.
02:26It's a Lynx course and fescue and it's just a little bit different.
02:30So it's nice to have a different type of place to play.
02:32This nine-hole course is set up the old-fashioned way.
02:35No trees, rolling hills and wispy fescue.
02:43Catch.
02:43Nice.
02:45Get in.
02:48There we go.
02:49We'll take that one.
02:53We're playing scramble, yeah?
02:54Yeah.
02:56Yeah, that'll work.
02:59I'll give you that one.
03:00All right.
03:08Some really well-kept bunkers and some lovely running greens.
03:12There's a bit of pace here but it's manageable and a lot of fun.
03:20Fourth hole at the Lynx, that hole got completely reshaped.
03:23Initially the fairway used to slope off to the right pretty severely.
03:29So when you were playing out there, even if you hit a good shot down the middle of the ball,
03:32it would kick down to the right, end up in the rough.
03:34And what we did is we put mounding and moguls on the right-hand side
03:38to make a bowl to catch the tee shots going in there.
03:41Really good, solid par 4 with a severe green.
03:44Still, it's a little elevated and a nice bunker in front.
03:47So it's become a really nice hole, and it was a great change for us.
03:56Well, I don't like going in that bunker.
03:58It's really deep.
03:59But fortunately, I was able to get up and down out of it, so that was fortunate.
04:03But most of the time, the trick with that golf hole is that usually you're hitting uphill a little bit,
04:08and it's always windy out there.
04:09There's not a tree to be seeing out there in the Lynx course.
04:11So sometimes it's hard to pick the right club to get in there.
04:20Lovely.
04:21I think you'll take that one to the sand out there.
04:33The other hole that did a lot of renovation work on is our seventh hole.
04:37It's actually a drivable par 4, but it has an extremely severe green.
04:41So if you miss the green trying to go for it,
04:44sometimes it's going to be really tricky to get your ball up and down.
04:52There's also a bunch of bunkers added to that hole to make the shape of the hole much better,
04:57and it's been really another hole that's become quite strong for us out there
05:01since the renovation work came through.
05:12That's how we do it, but we'll take that all day.
05:16You missed that one going down that hill.
05:18You could have been 10 feet by.
05:19I know.
05:19It would have been right down there.
05:20Yeah, that putt Ben made out there was really tough because that's so fast.
05:24The slope on that green is severe, so to make that putt was really good.
05:28But if he had missed, he might have been about 10 feet by, but we won't talk about that.
05:32But putt it in the center, so it was all good.
05:34So it's a fun hole to play because you can either get a birdie on it
05:39or a big score depending on where your tee shot goes.
05:43Yeah, one of the things for us that's interesting is a lot of people think
05:47because it's a nine-hole course that it may be a short course or an executive course,
05:51but a couple of the par 5s we have out there are extremely long.
05:55The eighth hole in particular is, from the back tees, 595 yards,
05:59and it's generally into a decent wind, so it's an extremely difficult course.
06:04But the whole thing about our links course is we have multiple sets of tees,
06:07so you can play it at a short distance or you can go all the way back
06:10and challenge yourself if you want, and that's a great thing
06:13for golfers of all skill levels to come check out.
06:21I'm hoping we don't revisit the ninth hole and the links here,
06:24but if we do, I'm hoping to stay out of the water a bit more than I did today.
06:28It's a hot day, but I'm not ready for a dip yet.
06:35From the first tee shot to your last putt,
06:38you will have a fantastic golf experience the way all Tom Morris intended.
06:55So the links here at Baybury Hills is a beautiful addition.
06:58It's got plenty of length with some par 5s reaching 595 yards
07:02and plenty of challenging greens.
07:03The undulations make it a real tough challenge,
07:06but it's still beautiful scenery.
07:07On a day like today, you just can't beat it.
07:10It's nice to have everybody out here.
07:12Baybury Hills, a beautiful day.
07:15Golf course is in great shape.
07:17We're really proud to show off the golf course
07:20and have people come out and check us out.
07:22A beautiful new gem down the Cape,
07:25the links course at Baybury Hills.
07:30Next, we head out to the championship course at Baybury Hills,
07:33designed by Brian Silva and Jeffrey Cornish and opened in 1987.
07:38This course represents what Cape Cod Golf is all about.
07:42Tall pine trees and native sandy soil make for an enjoyable walk in the woods.
07:54The par 3 third hole, which is the one we're at right now,
07:58is a great par 3 elevated tee.
08:01Tough bunkers in front of the green and around,
08:03so it makes for a really tricky shot.
08:06So what you're trying to do here is obviously get it on the green,
08:10but if not, the place you want to miss, it's a little bit short right,
08:13so you have a nice shot up the hill, an easier chip,
08:16and you don't want to get behind the pin here
08:17because then you get a really severe downhill putt.
08:20So it's really all about, you know, picking the right club,
08:23make sure you get, but if you get over that front bunker,
08:26you're in a good shape.
08:27Yeah, it's a really big spot.
08:28Yeah, yep.
08:28Lovely.
08:37What a shot that is.
08:38Yeah, I would take that one all day.
08:41Any day.
08:43Yeah, this is a tricky hole, but to get,
08:45I'm just happy I got back to the pin
08:47and have a makeable birdie looking here.
08:49And you always have this plateau here, you know,
08:51if you can get it around the pin,
08:52you can get a good chance of the birdie.
08:53Yep, because this is the nice flatter area of the green.
08:55Still going to break a little bit, but it should be makeable.
08:58It should be makeable.
09:03Nice.
09:04Making a birdie in this hole.
09:05It's a great hole.
09:06I feel like I'm stealing.
09:07Making a birdie here, so.
09:09Awesome.
09:13The fourth hole is our one water hole on the golf course.
09:16It has a pond right in front of the green,
09:18and the fourth hole is extremely difficult.
09:23That's your second shot.
09:24You have to hit over the water,
09:25but the wind is usually pretty tricky there,
09:27so it's a good hole to check out.
09:40Thanks.
09:43Awesome.
09:46Good job.
09:50Great shot on this hole.
09:51You know, this hole is really tricky.
09:52It's our number one handicap hole,
09:54so anytime you get a putt for birdie here,
09:56it's a big bonus.
09:57Look at it.
09:58It is, yeah.
10:00Always tricky, so.
10:02I'm very happy with that.
10:08Nice.
10:09There it is.
10:10Nice birdie on this hole.
10:11I'll take that all day.
10:12One of the things that we're very proud of here
10:14is over the next few years,
10:16our entire 27 holes here
10:17is going to be able to be irrigated with reclaimed water,
10:20so we won't be tapping into the aquifer,
10:22and we're able to reuse things
10:24and keep our golf course in good shape,
10:26but at the same time,
10:27be good for the environment
10:28by not taking ground water,
10:29so we're very excited about that going forward.
10:33Hey, Ben,
10:34you survived the day here at Baybury Hills.
10:36You played the nine-hole links course earlier,
10:38and now we're on 18 here at Baybury Hills,
10:40so good to finish nice and strong.
10:45Our 18th hole is a par five
10:46that comes back up towards our clubhouse.
10:48A little bit of a dog leg left.
10:54It's a hole that if you're a big hitter,
10:55you can get home in two.
10:57It's straight uphill, second shot,
10:58but it's actually a real good finish,
11:00and then you get to see the clubhouse
11:01in the background coming up the hill,
11:02so it's a nice spot.
11:04What do you got?
11:06Oh, nice.
11:06There we go.
11:07What a way to finish.
11:08Great finish.
11:11Yeah, one of the best parts about Cape Cod,
11:13when you come down in the fall,
11:15September, October,
11:17most all the golf courses are in tremendous shape,
11:19not just ours.
11:21Restaurants are less crowded.
11:23Beaches are less crowded.
11:25Our other course,
11:26which we're going to check out later, Bass River,
11:28weather permitting is open all winter long.
11:30We take good pride in that.
11:32It's able to have golf carts out,
11:33which a lot of courses can't
11:34because we're fortunate down at Cape
11:35we don't get nearly as much snow
11:37as other parts of the state.
11:38Fall, it's much, much better
11:40and easier to get around.
11:48The Bass River Golf Course
11:50in Yarmouth, Massachusetts
11:51was founded in 1900,
11:53and in 1914,
11:55it was redesigned and expanded
11:57by the legendary golf course architect,
12:00Donald Ross.
12:06A beautiful 18-hole layout featuring wide fairways,
12:10small greens,
12:11and on many holes,
12:13views of the Bass River.
12:21Here we meet the legendary Jim Hallett,
12:23a 13th generation local
12:25and a true character
12:27of the Yarmouth golf scene.
12:29I'm looking forward to it.
12:30I'm looking forward to it also.
12:32Definitely.
12:32It'll be a lot of fun.
12:34All right, Ben.
12:34This is a short par four.
12:35Keep it left.
12:36Everything kicks right.
12:37Are we going for that?
12:39We'll see how it goes, Tom.
12:39Yes, yes, absolutely.
12:40You want to go first?
12:41Who want me to go first?
12:42Age before beauty, is that it?
12:44Exactly, yeah, yeah.
12:54Jeez, Ben,
12:55it's been a while
12:55since I've knocked it on this green
12:57and won.
12:58You know, it's eagle putt,
12:59which is kind of nice.
13:00But you've still got to be careful with it.
13:02It's kind of quick going down here, but...
13:04Okay.
13:11Slow.
13:11I told you, quick, though.
13:12See, not as much as...
13:14That was a good putt.
13:15It didn't break that much.
13:16See, it's a little coming off
13:17that slope there.
13:18I gave it too much respect.
13:19Easy par, though, huh?
13:20I'll take it.
13:22You know, they say
13:23you never leave eagle short,
13:25but then again,
13:25you always want to protect the birdie, right?
13:28Yeah, that's all right.
13:31Nothing special there, really, you know.
13:34It's a bluebird bird.
13:40All right.
13:41We got snuck one in there, didn't we?
13:43We'll take that one.
13:44That was a good hole.
13:56You know, Ben,
13:56this is one of the original
13:57Donald Ross holes here.
13:58It goes up hard dogleg right,
14:01and then you get a green
14:02with a false front,
14:03which...
14:04That was his signature,
14:05you know,
14:06having those false fronts.
14:07Okay.
14:07And you're going to love it.
14:13Second hole, we're down below,
14:14you get the pond on the right,
14:15and it's a dogleg right up the hill,
14:18about 420,
14:20and it's just a bear of a hole.
14:22Then you go to the green
14:23with a false front,
14:25elevation change,
14:26and then when you get on the green,
14:28it's treacherous,
14:28so it's one of the best holes
14:30in the golf course for sure.
14:34We'll give you a little more season.
14:35Lovely.
14:37Nice to position, eh, that?
14:38Yeah, that's all right.
14:45What a beautiful hole.
14:46Yeah, is that really pretty?
14:47Stunning.
14:50There's something about
14:50hitting from a raised fairway.
14:52I just like it, too, yeah.
15:01Today was a beautiful day to play,
15:02almost 80 degrees,
15:04a little bit of wind blowing,
15:05but coursing great shape.
15:07Ben's a fine young man.
15:08Boy, can he hit it.
15:09He hit a 7-iron on that second hole
15:11right over the flagstick,
15:12so that was a great shot,
15:13and it was a good time.
15:21So, Ben, this hole here
15:23used to be number one
15:24for like 85 years,
15:26then it went to 13,
15:27now it's going to be number 10.
15:28In the old days,
15:29I'd take it right over that shed,
15:31and the green's, you know,
15:33about 70 yards behind it,
15:34and, you know, most of the time
15:35I'd get it to the green,
15:36at least, but today...
15:37I'm hoping for someone more...
15:39You can do that.
15:39You've got the power.
15:40I'm just going to aim it
15:41a little right,
15:41and be safe.
15:42We'll get it in play.
15:47Beauty, Ben.
15:49Wow, if you like them long
15:50and straight, that's beautiful.
15:53Wow, okay.
15:55Nice strike.
15:56We'll take those.
15:56Well done.
15:57Well done again.
15:58You know,
15:59I'm just going to have
16:00to tap one out there
16:01and see if I can keep up
16:01with the big boy.
16:07Well, Ben,
16:08this is a pretty good tee shot here.
16:10Good angle at the flag,
16:11so we're going to give it a shot.
16:13What are you thinking?
16:13Pitch just on the first...
16:15Just on the front third
16:16to let it release.
16:17Everything does kick
16:18a little left here
16:18in this shot.
16:19You can actually land it short,
16:20but there's a little false front,
16:22so you've got to be careful
16:23with that, too.
16:33Oh, Ben.
16:34It wanted to go.
16:36I wanted just one little jump.
16:37I was in the hole
16:38with my head.
16:39Oh, man.
16:39Still a shot, though.
16:40Oh, yeah.
16:41Son of a gun.
16:41Go ahead and look at it.
16:42Yeah, too much spin.
16:43Do you see that?
16:49There it is.
16:50Okay.
16:51It's in play nicely.
16:52Wonderful.
17:00There it is.
17:03Spin it.
17:03Not a friendly bounce,
17:04but a great shot.
17:05Yeah, not a friendly bounce,
17:06but okay.
17:13So what do you think, Ben?
17:14Wow, this is stunning.
17:15Yeah?
17:15It really is.
17:16Yeah.
17:16It's my first time up on the Cape
17:17and look at this view on the 14th.
17:20Yeah, they used to have
17:20100 people out there
17:22clamming on Sundays
17:23and stuff when I was younger.
17:24And now he's got people
17:25enjoying the boat.
17:25Now they're just enjoying the boats
17:27and having a nice, easy Wednesday.
17:29It is a beautiful day, too, isn't it?
17:31Yeah, it is.
17:32All right, let's sink these putts.
17:33Let's sink these for birdie, all right?
17:37Oh, there you go.
17:38There it is.
17:39There we are.
17:40There you go, partner.
17:42Good bird.
17:43Take it all day.
17:44Oh, you don't even need me.
17:45With a view like that as well.
17:47You don't need me on this.
17:48Great shot.
17:49Yeah, this is quite a view, isn't it?
17:51It is.
17:52One of the best.
17:56All day long.
17:57All day.
17:58We'll take those.
17:59Yeah, we'll take those.
18:00Yep, thank you.
18:02We like birdie in that hole.
18:03Man, look at this.
18:04Here we go.
18:04We're going to go to the...
18:05It used to be the 18th.
18:07Now it's going to be 15.
18:08It's over the Bass River.
18:10It's going to be a blast, yeah.
18:11It looks amazing.
18:17This is the 15th, over the river.
18:20You've got people kayaking out there.
18:21The Bass River is about a mile, mile and a half out.
18:23Wow.
18:24And we've got...
18:25In the north of the river.
18:25And what we've got here, we've got three pretty daunting bunkers.
18:30And basically, you've got a green that tilts from back to front,
18:32and it is greased lightning if you pass your flagstick.
18:35So we want to be a bit short of the flag.
18:37If it's possible, without all this wind blowing, yes.
18:44Okay, baby, sit right there.
18:52And as I was telling Ben, you've just got to trust your swing
18:55and don't see the water.
18:56Just trust it and hit it over that corner of that bunker
18:59and let the wind take it over.
19:03Ben, what I was telling you about this putt coming up?
19:06Yeah.
19:06Treacherous putt.
19:07Quick.
19:08Quick all over.
19:08I really want you to be delicate with this baby.
19:12Is this worth trying to pull?
19:13If you feel, should I go for it?
19:14You need to tap it down there, okay?
19:23Sit down, baby.
19:24Oh, no.
19:25Come on.
19:26Oh, man.
19:28Ben.
19:29Great effort.
19:30We'll take those.
19:31We'll take those.
19:31Okay, good par.
19:32So we're sitting at 300.
19:33That's pretty good.
19:36All right, let's keep it going.
19:37Okay.
19:38On to the next.
19:38Yeah, on to the next.
19:39Okay.
20:00Nice effort.
20:02Nice, Ben.
20:03What a wrap.
20:04I really enjoy the egg.
20:05It's a pleasure.
20:06400?
20:06That's pretty good.
20:07We'll take that one better.
20:08Baybury is the championship golf course here.
20:11Ambassador is more member-friendly.
20:13And then you go to the links, and it's totally different.
20:16It's awesome.
20:17Just long grass, big greens, and always windy.
20:22So it's a pleasure to play over there.
20:24All three courses are a pleasure.
