00:01There are many great destinations in the world, but only a handful of must-play, bucket-list
00:07golf journeys that inspire the soul.
00:09And one of them is Ireland.
00:17Amazing courses such as Waterville, Bally Bunyan, and Tralee to name a few, Kerry has
00:23an abundance of golf to keep the traveling golfer extremely happy.
00:28Of course, if you ask a Kerryman, they would agree.
00:31It certainly feels like a privilege to be in Kerry, which is one reason why they call
00:36it the kingdom.
00:39In this episode, we once again pack the bus with 12 of our closest friends and embark on
00:45another buddy trip Ireland, this time to three lesser-known golf courses, but certainly with
00:51equal quality and class.
00:54Killarney Golf and Fishing Club, located right on the main road to Killarney, Duke's Golf
01:00Club just outside of Killorgan, and Keyon Chabale, located in the far-off stretches of the Dingle
01:07Peninsula.
01:08It makes no difference what the weather is like.
01:10It's just different here.
01:11It's just different.
01:13It's beautiful no matter whether the clouds are in the sky or the sun is shining.
01:17It's just, it's an amazing place to be.
01:21Well, I guess the word hidden gem has been associated with Duke's for quite a while, but
01:26I think the secret is getting out there.
01:30And of course, it's in great condition, as you can see.
01:32We're really on a good path here in Duke's.
01:35I'm going to play a golf course that has really been built into the land that surrounds it.
01:40Very natural, traditional links.
01:44I think it's golf, it's intuitive, and, you know, fun.
01:48That's the name of the game.
01:50Three amazing stops and plenty of other activity as we go out of bounds in County Kerry.
01:57Well, we were on a road that had no wall, that would just fall to the edge of the cliff.
02:06And I was with my friend Mark here, who was close to sucking his thumb because he had a pair
02:10of heights, so we're keeping an eye on him.
02:13Buddy Tripp Kerry, this time on Golfing the World.
02:22It has been the honor of my life, traveling Ireland over the years with a golf bag and
02:28an open mind.
02:31People always ask, what's your favorite place, which of course is impossible to answer.
02:37But I will say this, if you ask the same question to someone from County Kerry, well, there is
02:44no better place to be than the kingdom.
02:49Well, we feel very blessed to be from Kerry, and from Kerry we feel very blessed to be from
02:53Killarney.
02:54Killarney is the biggest tourist spot in Ireland, outside of Dublin.
02:57So here you have everything you need from a tourist point of view.
03:01It's a great place for friends to come, for families to come.
03:07We have great scenery, where you're out here in the wilderness.
03:12Great mountains to climb, great natural beauty, and we have in the town great music, great
03:20food, great fun, you know, and really great service.
03:25Killarney has all that and more, but we're here for the golf.
03:29So we have gathered the Buddy Tripp gang and head on out to the amazing Killarney Golf and
03:35Fishing Club, home to two beautiful and challenging courses, Mahoney's Point and
03:41Killeen, the jewel in the crown and six-time host to the Irish Open.
03:48The boys are ready.
03:49The boys are ready to go today.
03:51I'm pretty excited about the forces we've got in place.
03:55The man holding the camera today is the number one seed in the tournament with a very strong
04:00team, but my team's going to do its gutsy best to get back into the state.
04:13There are two courses here at Killeen and Mahoney's Point, and Mahoney's Point is the one that
04:18strangely many people love, in the best that it's nice, it's relaxing, it's enjoyable.
04:30It is a good test of your short game.
04:34It is forgiving if you're a little bit wild off the tee box like some of us are.
04:42Oh no!
04:44There's a lot of golf societies play here in Ireland, where groups of friends get together,
04:48and they really enjoy playing Mahoney's Point.
04:51It's a golf course where people always feel like, I think I'm going to do well here.
05:02The 16th in Mahoney's is probably my favourite hole in Mahoney's.
05:08The 16th is the par 5, you know, and you go down a dip, and as you come up off
05:13your drive,
05:14you see the lake in the distance.
05:16And I find it wonderful, you know, you're getting closer to home, even if your golf has
05:21been bad, when you come over the mound and you see the lake, there's a real feel-good feeling
05:26from it.
05:26So even if the golf is bad, I'm nearly home.
05:29If the golf is going really good, you're thinking, hmm, I only need to keep going for another
05:33three holes.
05:35Way to go!
05:37Nicely done!
05:38Nice!
05:40Lads!
05:41Team friend!
05:42Looking good!
05:4417th is a nice, difficult par 4 coming along the lakeshore.
05:49You could actually have four seasons.
05:51You can see the rain coming on its way from over the mountains, the sun breaking through
05:56the clouds.
05:57It's beautiful.
05:59And then arriving into the final 18th, the par 3, our signature hole on Mahoney's Point.
06:05You could have anything from a driver to a 9-iron, depending on the wind and depending
06:10on the weather and the rain.
06:12It's the most beautiful, beautiful finishing hole, which has made many of cards and has
06:17destroyed many of golf cards.
06:44everything goes through here.
06:50First hole in Killeen is a tough, challenging hole, very much influenced by the pin position
06:57and very much influenced again by the wind off the lakes.
07:05And then we have a challenging green inside with a number of levels in it.
07:09I have the view that 1, 2, 3 and 4 in Killeen, when we're playing down by the lakeshore,
07:16if you can survive the first four holes, keep yourself in the competition, you have a great chance.
07:21You won't win it in the first four holes, but you can lose it in the first four holes.
07:28The fourth hole, it's not a long par 4, but you do need to be straight off the drive.
07:35And then when you're on the green, visually it's spectacular. Visually it is spectacular.
07:40You're right on the edge of the lake and it is the most beautiful, beautiful hole.
07:44It's not long, but you do need to keep yourself very accurate there and keep it straight.
07:52The tenth hole in Killeen is our signature hole in Killeen.
07:56And it is a par 3, which you're playing onto, not a full island green, but a half an island
08:03green.
08:04So it's surrounded by water, you know, the tea box is a bit protected.
08:08So you have to look at the flag, see which way the wind is going.
08:12And behind it, all that you see is the beautiful lake, the beautiful mountains behind you.
08:18So it can be quite distracting, but a beautiful signature hole.
08:22And no matter where the flag is, remember, the middle of the green is always the middle of the green.
08:36Yeah! Yeah!
08:38That was big, very necessary.
08:41Perfect, man.
08:42Nice part.
08:44Man!
08:55It makes no difference what the weather is like.
08:57It's just different here.
08:58It's just different, you know.
09:00It's beautiful, no matter whether the clouds are in the sky or the sun is shining.
09:04It's just...
09:05It's an amazing place to be.
09:07We're very lucky and very blessed.
09:26Feeling it!
09:27I'm on fire.
09:28Coming up next on Golfing the World, another great course in County Kerry.
09:33The fantastic Dukes Golf Club.
09:43I've got the boys rounded up right now in the lobby.
09:46We're feeling real good today.
09:478-10 tee time at Dukes.
09:49And the teams have settled.
09:51Still some confusion because I wasn't in charge yesterday.
09:54But I'll take care of that on the bus.
09:56Let's go.
09:57And it was Dukes.
09:59I think you said Dukes.
10:01Did you see Dukes?
10:02Did you see Dukes?
10:02Well, I did.
10:03And that's part of the problem.
10:04I wasn't informed.
10:05I didn't have any information yesterday.
10:06Apparently, it is Dukes.
10:15We continue our County Kerry buddy trip adventure through the historic town of Killorgland on the Ring of Kerry route
10:23to Glen Bay.
10:25Home to Dukes Golf Links.
10:27An amazing golf course at the head of Dingle Bay.
10:35County Kerry.
10:36I grew up here.
10:37I spent my life here.
10:38I grew up like everybody else playing football and different sports and playing golf.
10:41And, you know, it's a great place.
10:43We've got, as you see, we've got Dukes here.
10:45And there's some other great golf courses in the county.
10:47We're very, very lucky.
10:48And we are very lucky, too, to be here amongst the links land with water, mountains, and the ever-present
10:55wind.
10:56The golf is challenging, but we're learning from the locals.
11:00Keep it low.
11:05Keep it out of the love grass.
11:17Felt good. Felt good.
11:19Setting the tone for the boys.
11:22As you see, we have a beautiful day on the links.
11:26I'm sure everybody will enjoy it, and you can have your own game amongst yourselves.
11:31We've got visitors on the course today and members on the golf course.
11:34And you can see everybody's having great fun.
11:53Okay, so the fourth hole, number four hole on the course.
11:56That's the first par three.
11:59As you can see, it's from a slightly raised tee box.
12:02You play down parallel to the shoreline.
12:04There's out of bounds left.
12:06And, you know, you've got a green that's surrounded by slight mounding.
12:11There's no gathering there, so you have to hit the shot on the green.
12:13And it's a beautiful setting.
12:15You've got the ocean on the left.
12:16You've got the rest of the golf course behind you.
12:19You can see the Dingle Peninsula behind the green.
12:22And it's really, really, really a great par three.
12:38I think people are appreciating the layout of the golf course, the challenges that the course prevail, offer.
12:43It's a little bit more different in style.
12:46There's a bit more compact and a bit more like the Scottish type links courses where there's not great vast
12:51holes and everything is more in a framed environment.
13:08So we saw the seventh hole, which is playing into the south-eastery breeze today.
13:11It's playing into a non-prevailing wind, playing very long.
13:15And the hole is kind of divided into two.
13:18There's mounds at about 220 off the tee box.
13:21And as we saw the people hitting off, they're all hitting low draws, trying to maximize their distance into the
13:25strong breeze.
13:26And then they have a beautiful gathering green, which is about 200 yards away.
13:30And it's really one of the great golf holes on the golf course.
13:36As we continue on the back nine, the weather changes a bit,
13:39which makes for a completely different approach.
13:42Still, the experience is awesome.
13:53Truly feel the exuberance of Irish golf here on the edge of the Ivera Peninsula.
14:09Well, I guess the word hidden gem has been associated with Dukes for quite a while.
14:13But I think the secret is getting out there.
14:18And, of course, it's in great condition, as you can see, thanks to our greenkeeping team at Newhall Shannon.
14:23And you know what? We're really on a good path here at Dukes.
14:25So happy to travel down that path with you on the far off shores of Glen Bay, Dukes Golf Links.
14:33Another amazing day.
14:42Of course, no buddy trip is complete without going out of bounds.
14:47And no better place to stray than in the Kingdom of Kerry.
14:56In the southwest of County Kerry is an expanse of rugged, mountainous country
15:02that sweeps down to the world-famous Lakes of Killarney.
15:10Here, stretching across 25,000 acres, Killarney National Park.
15:17With its unforgettable combination of mountains, lakes, woodlands, and waterfalls.
15:33What a great way to complement our golf adventure.
15:43As day turns to night, Killarney comes alive.
15:51Renowned for its vibrant nightlife scene, there are plenty of options for sure.
15:58But on this occasion, we head over to the new Killarney Brewery and Distillery.
16:05Here we had a great tour of the facility with some pretty remarkable, gigantic pot stills
16:12where they produce the local styles of gin and whiskey.
16:17You can even create your own personalized bottle of gin at their gin school.
16:24But today, we were here for the native brew.
16:27And with many flavors to choose from.
16:30Just an overall great environment to relax, take in an impressive meal,
16:35and regroup for the next round on Buddy Trip Kerry.
16:39Delicious. The blonde. The blonde. Good.
16:52Up next, as we continue our Buddy Trip through County Kerry, the incredible Kion Shabir.
17:06And it's off to Dingle.
17:08Magic words for anyone who's been there.
17:11I came here right after graduation, many years ago.
17:15Nothing but great memories.
17:17And to return now? Just priceless.
17:19Especially as this time includes a trip to the breathtaking edge of the rugged Dingle Peninsula.
17:28Dingle Golf Links. Kion Shabir. Pure and traditional. Links at its finest.
17:40By Irish names, this one is called Ifran, and Ifran literally translates as hell.
17:45So, it's well-named.
17:53We're in on the Dingle Peninsula, the north-western tip of it, and you're here in County Bale Golf Club,
18:01or Dingle Golf Links, on the Slayhead Drive, about nine miles west of Dingle Town.
18:12We're going to play a golf course that has really been built into the land that surrounds it.
18:18Very natural, traditional links.
18:20We're non-pretentious here in County Bale.
18:23We just, we genuinely want to look after people who come in.
18:27What's interesting about Irish links courses, they all have their own completely unique individual character.
18:34And Kion Shabir is no different.
18:38The members are so friendly, most speak Irish as their first language.
18:42It feels very special indeed, to stripe it down the first fairway.
18:47And begin another golf journey, through the most westerly tip of Ireland, and the wild Atlantic Way.
18:56The third hole in Kion Shabir turns you around and gets you hitting up towards the headland itself.
19:02The ball gets shed on three of the four sides, and, you know, it takes a really good approach shot
19:10to hold that green.
19:13Longer players need to decide what distance they're going to leave in.
19:17Shorter guys are just happy to get up there anywhere near it in two.
19:20So, yeah, one of my favourites.
19:22It's a low index, but when you do get up on the green, the views in the surrounding area are
19:28second to none, really, here in the golf course.
19:35Number five is a little par tree.
19:39And Gilcock, it's named after the reeds that surround the hole.
19:44A little par tree, bunkers on each side, guarding the front runoffs back, left and right.
19:52Clever shot is actually a club short, and just take your chances in getting up and down.
19:56But, as you know, most golfers don't want to do the clever thing on a par tree.
20:01And they'll take on a back fin and get in a world of trouble.
20:05So, yeah, it's a good little strategic par tree.
20:11What we love about the place as members and employees here, you know, you can play here ten times in
20:19a week, you won't hit the same club into a par tree.
20:30I love the variability, the challenge, it's going to keep you using your imagination.
20:38I love you, I love you, I love you!
20:5917 is in the middle of a great closing trio, 16 has that great reveal as you come up and
21:05fantastic green set into the field,
21:08landscape. 17 is a long par 4. There's water and play off the tee, so you've got to decide
21:13can you carry it or not. Only the very longest hitters can get over that stream safely off
21:19the tee, so the rest of us mere mortals need to lay up. Try and leave a good angle into
21:25a green protected by three deep pop bunkers. Actually, three in the front and one left,
21:30that again sheds the ball on all four sides. So 17, if you've had a 4 there, I guarantee
21:37you've beat most of the golfers on any given day.
21:49I think golf, it's intuitive and, you know, fun. That's the name of the game.
22:00What an incredible round. And as it is here in Kerry, it's time for a bit of the crack.
22:08Ah, yes. A great way to end our trip. Stories galore, laughter and friendship. The perfect
22:16recipe for Buddy Trip Iron.
22:18Good morning guys. Listen, this has been a trip that I have actually, I have learned something
22:24on this, but no, I didn't think I could learn about that after you talk about it, but Kevin
22:29seemed to put a good group of buddies and he really, you know, what the word Buddy means.
22:35That was brilliant every morning about seeing smiles on the face and everybody having them,
22:40ready for them. It was a pure pleasure to be with you.
22:43So well, thanks I Kristen, Eva.
22:43God bless you.
