00:01Police say they were called to the incident at around 6.55 this morning after reports a police
00:08vehicle had collided with a 71-year-old Trinity Beach woman. Now the incident took place here at
00:14the intersection of Lily and Sheridan Street just behind me which is a busy and main arterial road
00:20running through Cairns. Police say they immediately rendered assistance to the woman at the scene.
00:26She was transported to Cairns Hospital but she died shortly after. Now we heard earlier from
00:32Regional Operations Deputy Commissioner John Timms who spoke about the broader impacts these sorts
00:37of incidents have on everyone involved and the broader community. Here's a bit of what he told
00:41us earlier. This is an incredible sad loss and has changed the life of a family forever. It has also
00:51been felt by the officers involved and the QPS as a whole. My sympathies go out to the family and
01:01friends of the 71-year-old woman. Police officers go out every day to serve and protect their community.
01:09A tragedy like this is not something we ever want to see happen. Police say the investigation will be
01:15taking a broader look at what occurred at the scene at the time but we did hear a little earlier
01:21from
01:22the police union which alleged that the police vehicle involved was responding to an incident at the
01:28time and that they did have their lights and sirens on. But these are the sorts of questions that police
01:33who are investigating the incident say they'll be looking to answer as well as questions like whether or not
01:39the green crossing light was on at the time. Police say there were three officers in the car at the
01:46time of the incident. One sergeant and two senior constables but they were unable to answer exactly who was
01:52driving at the time. Now this investigation will be led by the Forensic Crash Unit and the Ethical Standards
01:59Command with oversight from the Crime and Corruption Commissioner and they say that anything that comes out of this
02:05investigation will be forming recommendations going forward.
