00:00I know you were a fan of the Margaret Atwood novels growing up.
00:04How does it feel to be part of her television universe now?
00:09It's truly a privilege and it's magical.
00:13Yeah, I was such a Margaret Atwood fan growing up. I still am.
00:17And getting to be a cog in that Atwood world and bring it to life on screen is truly a
00:22privilege.
00:22I remember when The Testaments came out, I was in school and my friend brought it into school.
00:26And we read it then and there and I fell in love with Daisy then.
00:30And I have continued to love her and getting to be the person who puts that face to a name
00:37is truly wonderful.
00:38And I'm so happy to be here.
00:41So far, Daisy is the only character in The Testaments who has interacted with Jeanne.
00:45What is it like to have Elizabeth Moss sort of shepherd Daisy's intro to Mayday?
00:51I mean, working with Elizabeth Moss is truly nothing short of a privilege.
00:55She is the embodiment of The Handmaid and The Handmaid's Tale.
00:58And so I was completely in awe of those days on set with her, especially the very early days.
01:04My first week of filming was Elizabeth Moss week.
01:08It was entirely just myself and Elizabeth Moss sparring in scenes.
01:12And it was what I've often described as a baptism of fire because it was really getting thrown in at
01:17the deep end
01:18and getting to share those screens with her.
01:20But it was a privilege and I learnt a lot from her.
01:23I really admired the way she holds herself on set, the knowledge that she possesses and her ability to manoeuvre
01:30through this world that is Gilead.
01:32And that's something that definitely stayed with me for the duration of filming.
01:37But having June introduce Daisy to this world was really lovely because it is very much the passing of the
01:44baton in the way that emulates reality that in the story,
01:51June is passing the baton to Daisy.
01:53But in reality, Elizabeth passed that baton to myself and to Chase and to all the rest of the cast.
01:58And so it was really lovely having those moments.
02:00You also got to work with Amanda Bruegel, who reprises her role as Rita in The Testaments.
02:05Were you as happy as I was to learn that Rita is in culinary school?
02:11She's good.
02:13I'm in culinary school.
02:15Nice to have your own life.
02:17Yes, it is.
02:19It was really fun actually, that scene, because those noodles were truly really tasty.
02:25And so I was thrilled that Rita was in culinary school because we had a great day on set as
02:31a result of it.
02:32But no, it's lovely to be able to see Rita's transition into the outside world, especially as viewers of the
02:40Hamish Hill I'm sure will also be able to enjoy that moment to see that Rita has managed to make
02:45a life for herself beyond the world of Gilead.
02:47And to enjoy her life again, which is beautiful to see.
02:52And Rita also shares some wisdom with Daisy regarding her infiltration into Aunt Lydia's school.
02:59She says, don't ever underestimate those girls.
03:02If you go in there thinking you're smarter than them, you will die.
03:05Those girls think the earth is flat and can't even do multiplication.
03:08Don't ever underestimate them. Ever.
03:11They have spent their lives being vigilant in a way that you never have.
03:14So if you go in there thinking that you are smarter than them, you will die.
03:18Does Daisy realize how good that advice is in that moment?
03:22I don't think she does in the moment.
03:24She very much sees them as being lesser than herself and she is very much the better person from the
03:30better place.
03:30And so when Rita tells Daisy that she doesn't understand the gravity of it.
03:35However, as the season progresses, we do understand that Daisy has that idea dissipate in her mind.
03:43And by, you know, this point in the season that we're at now, she's definitely starting to realize that these
03:48girls are worthy of so much more and actually possess so much more than she first gave them credit for.
03:54That they are strong and they are very capable individuals.
03:58And I think it's the only thing that they lack is the information and access to knowledge that Daisy has
04:02been provided in the outside world.
04:04And it is that realization that Daisy has that makes her want to share information with these girls.
04:11To teach them what she can because ultimately knowledge is power and that's the only thing that these girls lack.
04:15She also really becomes a safe space for the plums and the greens.
04:20Yeah.
04:20Is it hard for Daisy to balance May Day's objectives with her budding connection with the women of Gilead?
04:27I think for sure.
04:28I think Daisy comes in, as I said, with a very strong idea of what she's here for and what
04:32the end goal is.
04:33And actually, the longer she spends in Gilead, the more that that end goal shifts within Daisy herself.
04:41And actually, she she gains a better understanding of who these people are and what actually will benefit them.
04:47And it's maybe not the the goals or ideologies that May Day first informed Daisy about.
04:54And actually, she she grows such a love and affection for them that she wants to protect them.
05:01And and often that goes against what May Day is wanting to Daisy is wanting Daisy to do.
05:07Daisy initially is excited, I would say, to go undercover with May Day, but quickly regrets her choices after seeing
05:15how brutal Gilead is.
05:17Yeah.
05:18And Garth says something to her in this week's episode that stood out.
05:21You know, he said, I want to destroy Gilead. But what do you want, Daisy?
05:25I want to destroy Gilead. A lot of people risked everything to get you in here because you said you
05:31wanted the same thing.
05:36So what do you want, Daisy?
05:39Has she thought about that before?
05:42I think, you know, Daisy is a teenager ultimately at the end of the day and her decision to come
05:47into Gilead probably was rather rash.
05:49She was on a revenge mission. She was very much fueled by the circumstances in which her parents were her
05:56killed.
05:56And she's got a lot of emotions lying around. And so she wants to come in and avenge those that
06:01she loved.
06:02And obviously she doesn't understand the full extent of the environment that she's thrusting herself into.
06:06And she only realizes that when she's in that environment with no alternative route out.
06:12And so I think there has been, as the seasons developed, Daisy really grappling with what it is that she
06:17actually wants and what is the right thing to do.
06:19I think by the end of the season, she knows what she wants.
06:23Seems like maybe she might have found a bit of a purpose when Agnes reveals that both her and Hulda
06:30have been sexually assaulted by Dr. Grove.
06:33I can't be around Becca's dad.
06:38He did things to me.
06:41How does this revelation change her going forward?
06:45I think it's at that point Daisy's newfound friendship and love for these girls really takes hold.
06:52And she understands that she needs to stick up for them.
06:57She needs to protect them and she needs to do the right thing.
07:00And I don't think she fully knows what that looks like in reality, what that action actually will be.
07:06All she knows is that she cannot be a bystander.
07:08She cannot sit silently as may they want her to do and just observe, that she has to actively stick
07:14her head above the parapet and do something differently.
07:17And so Daisy does take hold and make decisions and tries to protect these girls in the way that she
07:24can in that moment.
07:26Because she doesn't have many resources or anyone that she can turn to to help her out.
07:30But she makes decisions and whether or not they be the right decisions or the most beneficial decisions,
07:36they're the only ones that she can make in that moment to help these people.
07:39Let's look at all.
