00:02Work hard, play hard, healthy body, healthy mind, face the future, fear no challenge.
00:09I strive to be the best that I can be.
00:16Work 2000, work hard 2000, play hard, be the best, face the future, work hard, fear no challenge.
00:31Be the best.
00:32Hey, everybody, I'm Ryan Seacrest.
00:35And I'm Maria Santos.
00:36And this is the place where kids from all over the country can come to play the same incredible games
00:41that they've seen on American Gladiators.
00:45Welcome to Gladiators 2000.
00:47Now, let's meet the blue team.
00:50Weighing 108 pounds and standing five feet, three inches tall, it's 13-year-old James Smith!
00:58And at 83 pounds, five feet tall, four-year-old Tanya Fernley!
01:05Coaching the blue team today are Turbo and Sky.
01:11And for the red team, at five feet, eight inches, weighing 133 pounds, it's 13-year-old Anthony Meyers!
01:20Competing with Anthony is 11-year-old, four feet, 11-inch tall, 117 pounds, Sean J. Ball!
01:28The coaches today for the red team are Laser and Ice!
01:33It's gonna be sweet. For the next half hour, these exceptional young athletes will be going up against each other
01:38in some of the most difficult physical and mental challenges they've ever been faced with.
01:42That's because Gladiators 2000 isn't just a place to build healthy bodies, it's also a place to build healthy minds.
01:48Okay, that sounds good. After each event, the teams will be given a chance to up their scores by correctly
01:52answering a bonus question.
01:54Our contenders have been at Gladiators 2000 for weeks learning about physical fitness, health, nutrition, and right now all their
02:01hard work is going to be put to the test.
02:03So, let's do it! All right, let's go!
02:11First up, we got the wall. It's a 32-foot-high muscle crunching challenge of upper and lower body strength.
02:18Our wall is divided into five different zones. We'll set the clocks in 90 seconds, and each contender will have
02:23to climb as high as they can and as fast as they can.
02:26That's right. They'll win five points every time they get their entire body into a zone.
02:30And if someone gets to the top before time runs out, they'll earn an extra ten points bonus.
02:35First up, Tanya Fernley from the Blue Team!
02:39All right!
02:42And from the Red Team, Sean Table!
02:47Okay! I'm ready, you're ready. Blue Team, ready! Red Team, ready! Let's do it!
02:56All right, now they are off trying to get their entire bodies into a colored zone for five points. Blue
03:01being the first colored zone for points.
03:03The first person at the top will get ten points for their team, and the second person will earn five
03:07bonus points.
03:08Shantae on the right for the Red. On the Blue, Tanya right there. You see her fighting, pulling, using her
03:12arms, using her legs.
03:13You can hear Ice cheering Shantae on. You can hear Ice cheering Shantae on, saying, arms and legs.
03:17Arms and legs, arms and legs. There you go.
03:20All right, looks like they're probably about at the same point, maybe a little bit higher for the Blue Team
03:23there.
03:24Tanya right now, and Shantae approaching this part, where it starts to jut out, the wall starts to jut out.
03:30This is a dangerous part, where you want to hang on for your legs.
03:33Again, look at the stones, as you see her foot sliding up. Look at it!
03:35Oh, and Tanya slips! She loses group there, which means she's going to have to start over everything she's earned
03:41so far as he raced.
03:42She'll start with zero. 43 seconds left, she's going to have to climb into as many zones as she can.
03:46Shantae on that jump. Look, look at that! See the slant out? See that slant out?
03:50You can see how difficult that is to climb right there, and Shantae doing a good job there, taking her
03:54time concentrating.
03:55She's into the third zone, 15 points thus far. Meanwhile, trying to recover. Tanya into the Blue Zone, 5 points
04:02thus far.
04:02Tanya doing great. Shantae over there, almost into the last Red Zone. 20 seconds left on the clock.
04:09Can she get up into that Red Zone or over the top? Can Tanya regain? What's going to happen? Here
04:13they go.
04:1413 seconds left. Now, Shantae's almost to the top now, and Tanya's trying to regain as many, as many zones
04:20as she can.
04:21The clock is ticking down. Here they are. Three seconds left.
04:24Who's going to get to the next zone? Does anybody get into the next zone?
04:27Shantae trying to get up! No! And Tanya slips! I'm not sure what's going to happen. Did she slip before
04:31time runs out?
04:32We'll have to check with Peggy to see what happens.
04:34We've got Shantae from the Red Team with 15 points. And Tanya from the Blue Team with 10.
04:40We'll be back to see how James Smith and Anthony Meyer do when they get to scale the wall. So
04:45don't go away. Stay with us.
04:48Don't just sit there. Get off your butt and work those muscles. You don't want your breakfast to turn to
04:52fat. You want to work on those hips and thighs.
04:55The leg lift. Lay on your side and support your head with your arm, keeping your elbow on the ground.
05:01Bend the bottom knee for balance, then lift the top leg up and down, keeping the foot parallel to the
05:06floor. Do as many as you can during this commercial break.
05:09It's not important how many you do. It's just important that you try.
05:15Welcome back to Gladiators 2000. Before we see our next two contenders take on the wall, I've got something I
05:20really want to talk about.
05:23All right, guys. Let's talk about talk. Do you know where it comes from?
05:26Your mouth.
05:27Well, before that.
05:28Your brain.
05:29Exactly. You see, when your brain has something to say, it sends a series of signals to your lips, your
05:33jaw, your tongue, and your throat.
05:35What makes the sound?
05:37Well, whenever you speak or sing, air from your lungs passes across things called vocal cords.
05:42Now, the vocal cords are thin membranes found in the larynx, which is sometimes called your voice box.
05:47If you close the space between your vocal cords, you get a high-pitched sound.
05:50And if you open the space, the sound gets lower.
05:53Okay, to make it louder, force air out of your lungs quickly.
05:56But to make it softer, you slow down how much air you push out.
05:59Now, give it a try. Say Gladiators 2000 really softly.
06:04Gladiators 2000.
06:05See how the sounds are shaped into words by using your lips and tongue?
06:09All right, now push out a lot of air and say Gladiators 2000 really loudly.
06:14Gladiators 2000.
06:16Terrific, but remember this.
06:17Too much straining of those vocal cords can cause you to get a hoarse voice.
06:21And you wouldn't want that to happen before the Eliminator, would you?
06:24No!
06:27We're back with the second half of The Wall.
06:29For the blue team, James Smith!
06:36And the red team, Anthony Meyer!
06:42Okay, it's time to do the wall.
06:45Blue team, ready!
06:46Red team, ready!
06:48Let's kick it, Peggy.
06:51Clock now taking away the race against the time here.
06:54Trying to scale the top of the wall.
06:56Anthony Meyer climbing almost into the first zone already.
07:00James really going up that wall.
07:02He's almost in the second zone.
07:03Anthony on the right for the red right there.
07:06Great job using both arms and legs.
07:08Same thing with James.
07:09They are up this wall.
07:10This is gonna be close.
07:12Look at him using his hands there.
07:13James slipping a little bit there.
07:14Really hanging on for life.
07:15This is the worst feet's gonna go.
07:16Anthony doing great too.
07:18This is gonna be close.
07:19Wow!
07:20Look at them.
07:20Head to head.
07:2060 seconds left.
07:21They're up this wall in no time.
07:24They're coming into the top zone.
07:25Both in about the same area.
07:26James almost into the last zone.
07:28Pulling.
07:28Anthony.
07:29If he can get his legs in there.
07:31He'll be into the last zone.
07:32If he can just hang on and get over the top.
07:35It's gonna be close.
07:36Great touch.
07:37And Anthony is over.
07:39Look at this, folks.
07:41Look at this, James.
07:43Wow.
07:44Wow.
07:44What a close race.
07:4637 seconds to spare.
07:47A hot, hot race.
07:49Let's go to Peggy.
07:50They've gotta be exhausted.
07:52Anthony with the red team scores 30 points.
07:56James with the blue team scores 25.
07:59Now the blue team thus far with 35 points.
08:01And the red team, Anthony for the red team.
08:03You guys have 45.
08:04Laser.
08:05Good coaching, Anthony.
08:06Great job.
08:07Now, tell the people at home what it's like when you're climbing up the wall and your arms
08:11and your fingers are getting tired.
08:13When you're climbing, your fingers get tired and you have to rely on your legs.
08:16And if you don't have that lower body strength, then you're not gonna get up there that easily.
08:19Alright, guys.
08:20Congratulations.
08:21A great job.
08:21Maria's got a bonus question for you.
08:23Hop on a lot.
08:24Our competitors have finished their first physical challenge and now it's time for their
08:28mental challenge.
08:29The subject they'll be quizzed on is talking.
08:31Since the red team won our first event, they get to choose which question they want to
08:35answer.
08:35Which one will it be?
08:36Question A or question B?
08:38A.
08:40Okay.
08:41If you get this question right, 25 points for your team.
08:44Here's your question.
08:45Good luck.
08:46Where does speech originate in the human body?
08:48The brain.
08:50Congratulations.
08:51That's right.
08:5125 points for your team.
08:53Very good.
08:54Blue team, now's your chance.
08:56Here's your question for 25 bonus points.
09:00What body parts are responsible for shaping sounds into words?
09:04The vocal box.
09:06No, I'm sorry.
09:06That's incorrect.
09:07The correct answer was lips and tongue.
09:10Well, the red team may be winning but there's still plenty of time for the blue team to catch
09:14up when all of our contenders go head to head battling it out on one of my favorite games.
09:18It's right here.
09:18It's called Swing Shot.
09:20And it's next.
09:20Stay with us.
09:21G2.
09:21Back at you in a sec.
09:25What does the amount of curliness in your hair have in common with a cake decorator?
09:29Well, when frosting comes out as squiggles or flowers, it gets its shape from the hole
09:33on the tip.
09:34The hair follicles on your head do the same thing.
09:37Straight hair is squeezed out through circular follicles.
09:39Wavy hair comes from oval shape.
09:41And curly hair comes from kidney shaped ones.
09:44I wonder what my hair would look like if it had star shaped ball cold.
09:54We're back for the second half of Gladiators 2000 where the red team leads 70 to 35.
09:59But these two teams are playing for more than just pride.
10:01They're also playing for some great prizes for themselves and their school.
10:04But before we can give away any prizes, let's go listen to Lazer as he talks about one
10:08of my favorite subjects.
10:10Sweat.
10:12Come on.
10:13Let's go.
10:14All right.
10:15Five minute break right here.
10:16Let's last a little bit.
10:17All right.
10:18Whoo.
10:19How are we feeling?
10:21I'm soaked.
10:22I'm drenched.
10:23I'm sweating like a pig.
10:25That's disgusting.
10:26Hey.
10:27A lot of people feel that way.
10:29But everybody sweats.
10:30We have to.
10:31It's our body's way of regulating our temperature.
10:33When you get too hot, our sweat glands release a fluid.
10:35And when it evaporates, it cools your body down.
10:38Sort of the way an air conditioner works.
10:42Ew.
10:43Air conditioner never smelled like this.
10:45That's because sweat is also our way of cleaning out our system.
10:48When we sweat, our body releases waste products such as ammonia and urine.
10:52Ew.
10:53In addition to minerals such as potassium and sodium, that's why our sweat pays so salty.
10:59All right.
10:59Come on.
10:59Gather around.
11:00I got something to show you.
11:01All right.
11:03Now this here is a sweat gland.
11:04And did you know that we have over 3 million sweat glands in the entire human body?
11:08And most are just below the skin in areas such as the armpits and palms?
11:13Late end to end, you have enough sweat glands inside you to stretch 30 miles.
11:19In fact, on a really hot day, your glands can produce over 10 quarts of sweat.
11:25After a big sweat, your body is low on potassium and sodium.
11:28So eating things like bananas or other fruits and vegetables is a great way to restock your
11:32body's mineral supply.
11:34And don't forget to drink plenty of water.
11:36In fact, you should be drinking water before, during, and after each workout.
11:39What I want to know is how can I stop from sweating?
11:42You can't, and you really don't want to.
11:44It's natural and necessary.
11:46If sweating is starting to bug you and it's starting to ruin your clothes, then try wearing
11:50some antiferspirants and deodorants.
11:52Try wearing clothing that breathes well.
11:54Things made of a cotton polyester blend let the skin breathe better.
11:57Finally!
11:58You can all take a shower, which is where you're all going now.
12:01So come on, let's beat it!
12:02Let's go!
12:03Come on!
12:04Ever wonder what it would feel like to be a human yo-yo?
12:07Well, these kids are about to get the chance as they jump off these towers suspended by giant
12:11bungee cords.
12:12And it's not all fun and games.
12:13There's some work involved, too.
12:15Once they bounce off the floor, they've got to reach the balls suspended on that pole.
12:18Each of these balls represent one of the three important nutrients we need in our daily diet.
12:22Carbohydrates, proteins, and fats.
12:23Thanks a lot.
12:24That's right, Maria.
12:25The blues are carbohydrates, and since carbs are our most important sources of energy,
12:28they're worth five points every time a team member can grab one and then bring it back
12:32to their gladiator coach.
12:33Proteins are worth three points, and fats, which we shouldn't eat too much of, are worth
12:36only one point.
12:37All right.
12:38You ready to do it?
12:38Yeah.
12:39You ready to do it?
12:39Let's do it.
12:4060 seconds on the clock, please.
12:42Blue team ready.
12:43Red team ready.
12:45Yeah!
12:45Kick it!
12:47Here they go now!
12:48Swing shot!
12:50Remember, Tawny and James on the blue team, Shantae and Anthony on the red team.
12:54They knocked quite a few balls down on the ground without getting 10 points right there.
12:57Two carbs worth five of feet.
12:59Great job there on James Carbohydrates.
13:01Look at James doing headdives.
13:02James going flying there.
13:05Sky helping Tawny up there.
13:07Woo-hoo!
13:08You can see Shantae there grabbing a few balls.
13:11Now, remember, Shantae told us that she bungee jumped before, and she enjoys doing that.
13:15She knows all about this.
13:15Look at him carrying in the mouth.
13:16You see that?
13:17In the mouth, great technique.
13:19Oh-ho!
13:19Bodies in.
13:20Everyone is everywhere.
13:21It seems like they're knocking more balls off than they're even grabbing.
13:24Well, it's hard to control yourself on these bungee cords.
13:25You see that?
13:26Oh!
13:26Going for the reach.
13:28Look at it.
13:28You don't know when you're going to get to the pole.
13:29It's hard to judge the time and the distance.
13:30Anthony there grabbing a couple balls.
13:32Putting them in.
13:3313 seconds left.
13:34To go deep with three points.
13:36Lots of action.
13:36James there.
13:37Turbo hopping him up.
13:40The dunk.
13:41Yellow.
13:41One.
13:42Fat.
13:42One point.
13:43Here he goes.
13:44Three seconds left.
13:45Last time.
13:46And Anthony can get up there.
13:47Oh!
13:48And he can't make it in the cage.
13:49Let's go to Peggy.
13:50She is stumped.
13:52Now, let's go get the totals.
13:54We've got the red team with 44 points and the blue team with 13.
13:58All right.
13:59The red team, 114.
14:00Blue, 48.
14:01You guys come over here for the big bonus.
14:03How are ya?
14:05Good to see ya.
14:06Okay.
14:06The topic here is the big sweat.
14:0925 points.
14:10You guys want to get to go first.
14:11Question A or question B?
14:12A.
14:13All right.
14:13The A question.
14:14Here we go.
14:14The question.
14:15What are some things you can do to control heavy sweating?
14:20Antiperspirants and deodorant.
14:21Yes.
14:22Yes.
14:22Yes.
14:22That's all you got to say.
14:2325 points.
14:24Congratulations.
14:25All right.
14:26Blue team, here you go.
14:27Question B.
14:28Are you ready?
14:29All right.
14:30What kind of fabric lets your skin breathe easier?
14:34Cotton.
14:36Polyester.
14:37That's all you got to say.
14:38Don't look for more.
14:3925 points to you.
14:40Correct.
14:41Both you guys get 25 bonus apiece.
14:43Let's go to Maria.
14:44At the end of two events, the score is red with 139 and blue with 73.
14:50But in just a few minutes, all that can change because up next, we've got our final event.
14:54The Eliminator is next, so stay with us.
15:00So, you want to know why your knuckles crack?
15:02Well, I sure do.
15:03There's a fluid around the joints of your finger bones.
15:05When you stretch your fingers, the pressure on the fluid changes.
15:08Little bubbles form in the fluid and they pop.
15:10Want to crack the same knuckle again?
15:11Well, I got news for you.
15:13It takes about 15 minutes for the fluid to return to normal.
15:16So, go ahead, practice.
15:18That's if you want to.
15:25We are back for the final exciting challenge.
15:28It's the Eliminator and that's exactly what's going to happen here.
15:31When one team is eliminated and the other is crowned.
15:34Now, Maria and I snuck in here just the other night to check out the Eliminator to see how tough
15:39it really is.
15:43The Eliminator starts with a climb up the ladder.
15:46Next, a giant slide to a row of hanging rings and our first question board.
15:50To add 25 points to your score, choose the correct answer by selecting one of our treacherous rolling logs.
15:55Next, a razor sharp high speed turn and a jump down takes you to the question room for our second
16:00question.
16:01A wrong answer here means a locked door and lost time.
16:04But, get it right, earn 25 points and move on to quickly tag your partner.
16:09Contender number two has to climb over a row of hurdles on their way to question number three.
16:13Choosing an answer here means climbing the correct rope over our glass wall and then racing up the moving treadmill.
16:19It'll take skill and balance to get to the top where the final question board awaits our contender.
16:23Answer this question by picking one of the two swinging ropes and it's hang on time for a ride through
16:29the barrier to the finish line.
16:30The team with the fastest time will receive a bonus of 50 points which should determine who wins today's super
16:36cool prize package.
16:41So now it's time for the eliminator!
16:49Since the blue team is behind, they'll face the eliminator first.
16:52James will start the relay race and Tanya will pick up in the middle for the final push to the
16:57finish line.
16:58Alright, the blue team says they're ready, I got the high sign.
17:01Peggy says she's ready, got the high sign.
17:02We're ready, let's do it!
17:04Move buddy, move!
17:06Alright!
17:06A little slow starting on the line there!
17:09You see him slip down.
17:10James trying to conquer the eliminator to the slide.
17:14James on his way down the slide!
17:15Slide!
17:16On to the rings!
17:17Alright, here we go.
17:18There he's getting some momentum, he's gotta pull himself back and start, pull back.
17:21A key here is you cannot rush this event.
17:24You cannot hurry, you're gonna slip if you do.
17:26That's the bottom line.
17:26Look at the focus in his eyes!
17:28Look at the intense eyes!
17:29We're thinking the same thing there.
17:30Question number one.
17:31If you're nervous, which glands tighten your blood vessels to make you cold and clammy?
17:35Lymph glands or adrenal glands?
17:37Chooses adrenal glands, which is right, picking up another 25 points.
17:41Skates across the logs, down to the hurdle and to the ground.
17:44Question number two.
17:45Over the cushion.
17:45To the question room.
17:47Vocal cords can be found in which body part?
17:49The lungs or the larynx?
17:50Chooses the larynx.
17:52Is it correct?
17:53Yes it is!
17:53The 25 points.
17:55Tags' partner, Tanya, which will jump over the hurdle, jumps right across there.
