00:09So you were aware of a tape?
00:11Did you?
00:12We were told that there was a videotape, yes.
00:16And I wanted to know what was on it,
00:18and they said, we cannot tell you that,
00:20but I will tell you that it is very, very bad.
00:24It is 9-15, September 22, 2006.
00:30So, um, the video will never make sense to me,
00:34and I will never understand where it came from.
00:38There should be no law against killing people.
00:41I had a hard time thinking that it was real.
00:46She's going to be alone in a big, dark house.
00:49I'm perfect.
00:50Keep your game.
00:54Obviously, I could never watch it again.
00:58I mean, will I socialize the fuck up?
01:00We got to get her out of the street.
01:01See ya.
01:03It was just unimaginable.
01:07It was...
01:12Just something that you cannot unsee.
01:43Okay, what's going on?
02:05Well, it was a Sunday afternoon, and I was at home,
02:08and I received a call from the Bannock County Sheriff's Office.
02:11They had a homicide that had taken place,
02:14and I could tell there was a sense of urgency in his voice,
02:17and he basically indicated to me that they needed some help.
02:24The crime was committed in a neighborhood in a rural part of Pocatello,
02:29in the neighborhood of Whispering Cliffs.
02:33It was a house kind of out in the middle of nowhere.
02:41Entering from the basement, going upstairs to the living room,
02:45there was some broken glass at the base of the stairs.
02:53There was blood spatter in the hallway that led to the living room.
02:59I remember seeing her body in the living room,
03:02laying flat on her back.
03:04She had several wounds to her upper and lower body,
03:07and it was evident that she was stabbed to death.
03:13There was a sign of a fight.
03:15She had a pinky injury.
03:19Defensive wounds on her hand would indicate that she was fighting somebody off.
03:30The victim was identified as Cassie Jo Stoddard.
03:33She was a 16-year-old female Pocatello High School student.
03:38Cassie lived with her mother, Anna,
03:41and her stepfather, Vic, in Pocatello.
03:45What we knew at the time was that Cassie had been house-sitting
03:49at this residence for family members who had left town for the weekend.
03:53Her aunt and uncle, they had gone to Jackson Hole Friday, September 22nd,
03:59and when they had come home on Sunday the 24th,
04:02they had discovered Cassie on the floor of the living room.
04:08Victor Price was the boyfriend of Cassie Stoddard's mother,
04:12and he drove Cassie's mother to the house on Whispering Cliffs,
04:16and they got there just shortly after the homeowners arrived.
04:24Pulled into the driveway, and Frank come running out and says,
04:28I think Cassie's dead.
04:31And Victor jumped out of the car, ran into the house.
04:35I sat there for a minute, just in shock,
04:39and after Victor ran in, I ran in after him.
04:43Victor came out from the living room and pushed me into the kitchen.
04:47He says, no, you can't go in there.
04:49You can't go in there.
04:50She's dead.
04:51You can't go in there.
04:52And I started screaming.
04:54I want my daughter.
04:55I want my daughter.
05:02She was my angel.
05:04She was a good kid.
05:07Stubborn.
05:08Set in her ways.
05:11Bright, intelligent.
05:13Knew what she wanted out of life.
05:18Straight-A student.
05:21A beautiful young person was just murdered in our community.
05:25I can't imagine what Cassie's family has gone through.
05:32I have three daughters.
05:34It made me think of, what if this was my daughter's?
05:38How would I want the police to respond?
05:40And I knew right then and there,
05:41we needed to make sure that we found out
05:44who these people were that did this.
05:50There's really no signs of forced entry.
05:53It looked like there might have been some type of scuffle.
05:56But for the most part,
05:57the house was not ransacked or destroyed.
06:02We didn't find any murder weapons or knives
06:05that could have been used in the homicide.
06:08At this point, we didn't have a murder weapon.
06:11We didn't have any eyewitnesses.
06:13We certainly don't have any evidence
06:14that's going to help us solve this crime.
06:18Highly unusual, first of all,
06:20for a young person to be murdered.
06:22And second of all, it's just highly unusual
06:24for a homicide like this to take place in Pocatello.
06:31Pocatello is a small town.
06:34It's not a big city where you can't have kids out
06:37riding their bikes and everything like that.
06:40We grew up playing in our backyards
06:43and running through pastures
06:44to get to other friends' houses.
06:46I remember playing in the hayfields
06:49and I had a butterfly net
06:50and we would run around and chase the butterflies.
06:55Lots of outside.
06:56A lot of hiking,
06:58bike riding,
07:00skateboarding.
07:02It's a beautiful place.
07:05As you're raising your kids,
07:08you don't really worry about them.
07:10It feels like a very safe community,
07:13which is why,
07:14when this happened,
07:16no one could believe it.
07:20The Monday following the crime,
07:23I remember going in to school
07:25and everything was normal.
07:28And then I went to math
07:29and that's the class that Cassie was in.
07:33Cassie wasn't there.
07:36I remember getting to school
07:40and I went straight to the cafeteria.
07:45Everyone was crying.
07:47There was counselors swarming the hallways.
07:50My cousin was crying hysterically
07:53and she told me about Cassie.
08:01Cassie was a very, very beautiful person.
08:05She was very liked
08:07and loved by a lot of people.
08:08No clue, Cassie.
08:10I would do stupid stuff,
08:12like gently pull her hair
08:13because she had long, pretty hair
08:14and sometimes she'd put it in a little ponytail
08:16so I'd gently pull it to mess with her.
08:19But then she'd be like,
08:20all right, I'm going to class.
08:21I got no time for this.
08:23You guys are silly.
08:24But it was always very loving.
08:28Cassie was always smiling,
08:31always drawing.
08:32Every time I saw her,
08:33even if she was leaning against the locker,
08:35she was drawing.
08:37She wasn't the most outstanding student.
08:39She was not the most this, that, or the other.
08:42She was just Cassie.
08:44And all we knew is that
08:45a beloved friend was gone.
08:48Everybody was just whispering,
08:51praying.
08:52It was very solemn and sad.
08:58I just wanted to go home.
09:15The fact there was nothing taken during the homicide,
09:18we know it wasn't motivated by, you know,
09:21a robbery or a home invasion.
09:25The attack seemed so random and so violent
09:28that it just didn't make sense.
09:32Initially, we thought we were some type of sociopath
09:35that was on a murderous rampage.
09:44About two years before Cassie Jo was murdered,
09:48we had another brutal homicide
09:50that, at the time Cassie Jo was murdered,
09:52remained unsolved.
09:55Norrie Jones was killed in her home.
10:01Norrie Jones and Cassie Stoddard,
10:04both single females.
10:06They're both home alone at homes.
10:07I mean, they both happened the month of September,
10:09almost two years to the day apart.
10:12Just a lot of coincidences that, you know,
10:15made us concerned as law enforcement.
10:21It terrified the whole town
10:24because her murder had never been caught.
10:28It was unsolved.
10:29And everybody pretty much thought it had happened again.
10:40Now we had a period of time
10:42between, you know, Friday night to Sunday afternoon
10:47to begin to figure out what transpired.
10:54Cassie's mother told us that she dropped Cassie
10:57and her boyfriend Matt off
10:59at the Whispering Cliffs on Friday night
11:01around 6.30ish.
11:03So we knew that she was with her boyfriend, Matt.
11:08They'd been dating for about five months
11:10and they were both high school students
11:12at Pocatello High School.
11:13And so we knew that there was a high probability
11:16that Matt was one of the last people to see Cassie.
11:20So that was our number one priority,
11:23to talk to Matt as soon as possible.
11:27Matt was like a jock,
11:29but he was also kind of nerdy.
11:31He would play football,
11:33trying to get into that social network
11:36of the popular people while also focusing on his schoolwork.
11:41He had a crazy sense of humor.
11:44Sometimes he would say off-the-wall stuff.
11:46He was a class clown.
11:49Matt and his parents both agree
11:51that he will come into the police department.
11:55And we conducted an interview
11:56with him and his mother.
11:59I'm just going over things
12:00because we were talking about
12:01rumors flying around and stuff like that.
12:03Yeah, I'm hearing rumors about like,
12:05she like, they like chopped off her legs,
12:07they chopped off her head,
12:09they broke her fingers,
12:10they cut her fingers off her hand,
12:12all of this stuff.
12:13What struck us as a little bit odd
12:15was the fact that he had no emotion
12:17really whatsoever
12:18after knowing that
12:20his girlfriend had been murdered.
12:23This was the last thing he said to her
12:24or anything like that.
12:26Pretty much just saying,
12:27I love you and,
12:28okay, I'll call you when I get home.
12:30Why isn't he showing emotion?
12:33So if you could just kind of,
12:35just recap for us,
12:36you know, about Friday night,
12:37my mom dropped you off.
12:39Matt told us that
12:40he and Cassie were dropped off
12:42at the Whispering Cliffs
12:43by Cassie's mom, Anna.
12:46And his intent was to
12:48stay there with her
12:49for a period of time.
12:50And while they were there,
12:51friends of his and Cassie's
12:54came over.
12:55Cassie told Tori and Brian
12:57that she was just going to be up there.
13:00Tori Adamczyk and Brian Draper
13:02is two friends
13:03at Pocatello High School.
13:06And she was just like,
13:07okay, I'll just be there
13:08all weekend by myself
13:09and they were all like,
13:11oh, you're going to have a party?
13:13And she's all like,
13:14no, I said,
13:15I'm going to be up there by myself.
13:17And they showed up there
13:18about 8,
13:20about 8 p.m.
13:20Yeah.
13:21So then he,
13:22Tori and Brian
13:23toured the house,
13:24went in the basement,
13:25played on a weight machine
13:27that was downstairs.
13:28And then they eventually
13:30settled upstairs
13:31and watched a couple movies.
13:33Tori wanted to watch Kill Bill,
13:35so he put that on
13:36and Tori just sat there
13:37and just watched the movie.
13:39And then they were there
13:40until about what time
13:42did you think that they left?
13:439.30, maybe 10.
13:44Okay.
13:45Between 9.30 and 10,
13:46they left.
13:47Brian and Tori left
13:48the Whispering Cliffs residence
13:50to go to a movie
13:51in Pocatello.
13:56Matt told us
13:57that after Tori and Brian left,
14:00he and Cassie
14:01were sitting on the couch
14:02watching TV.
14:06And the lights went out
14:08and they thought
14:10it was kind of weird.
14:15His fear was
14:16that there was somebody
14:17in the house,
14:17but he didn't know for sure
14:18and he was very scared.
14:20And he and Cassie
14:22stayed upstairs
14:23because they were so frightened.
14:28Eventually,
14:29the lights did come on.
14:30Matt called his mother
14:31and asked his mother
14:33if he could stay there
14:34with Cassie that night.
14:35Because she's a little scared.
14:37I told him how she was
14:38kind of scared
14:38because the lights went out
14:39and she was just
14:40a little freaked out.
14:41Yeah, he said,
14:42if I want to stay,
14:42I said, just have her
14:43come with you.
14:45Okay.
14:46And you heard it
14:47in the background.
14:48You heard Cassie say,
14:49no, I've got to stay.
14:50I've got to stay
14:50and let the dog out
14:51in the morning.
14:52And then I said,
14:53well, we're on our way.
14:53You're ready when I get there.
14:55And what time is that,
14:56did you say?
14:58Matt is picked up.
14:59His parents show up
15:00and take him home
15:01from the Whispering Cliffs
15:03address about 11 o'clock
15:04that night.
15:06So there's the three of you
15:08that are involved
15:08in this thing, okay?
15:10There's you
15:11and then there's
15:12your two friends
15:12who come over.
15:13Did anybody try to eat?
15:15Did either one of them,
15:17Tori or Ryan?
15:18There were popsicles.
15:20Other than that.
15:21Anybody get in the drawers,
15:22get a spoon?
15:23Did anybody talk about
15:24getting cereal,
15:25getting smell?
15:26I mean,
15:27anything like that.
15:28Yeah, we went,
15:29like,
15:29because, like,
15:30there's, like,
15:31I showed them,
15:31like, this huge knife
15:33that they've got,
15:33like,
15:34it's, like,
15:34it's kind of,
15:35like, really sharp
15:35and, like,
15:36you have to, like,
15:37pinch this thing
15:38to pull it out
15:38of its own thing
15:39and not,
15:40like,
15:40I showed Brian that.
15:41Where was that knife?
15:42In the kitchen.
15:44What did it look like?
15:46It was just, like,
15:47the knife,
15:48like,
15:49that long.
15:50What color was it?
15:52It was a black candle
15:53and, like,
15:53silver blade.
15:56Is it...
15:57Can you specifically...
15:58Yeah, draw...
15:58Could you draw some pictures?
15:59I'm going to...
16:00Oh, they can use
16:00the restaurant really quick.
16:04I can't talk to her.
16:05I can't talk to her.
16:08Um, I...
16:09Matthew,
16:11um,
16:12I just found out
16:12something that I didn't know
16:14that, um,
16:15what you just told them.
16:16I...
16:16You didn't tell me this
16:17about any kind of...
16:19You showed them a knife.
16:20That would be
16:21a very important thing.
16:23I...
16:24I...
16:24You didn't tell me
16:25not a word about this.
16:26So, um,
16:27this interview is over
16:28right now
16:29and, um,
16:30we will get in touch
16:31with you.
16:32I gotta, um,
16:35figure some things out.
16:37Okay.
16:38Okay?
16:38I'm out.
16:42Please be in touch
16:43with this opac.
16:43Absolutely.
16:45I think they used
16:47this knife
16:47to open the popsicles
16:49that they ate,
16:50but based on the fact
16:51that Cassie had been stabbed
16:53and the mention of a knife,
16:55this maybe brought
16:57some suspicion
16:58that maybe Matt
17:00is involved in this thing.
17:05The autopsy is telling us
17:07that Cassie Jo
17:08was stabbed
17:09numerous times.
17:11in excess of
17:1228, 29 times.
17:16The stab wounds
17:17were concentrated
17:17on the upper torso
17:18of the body.
17:20Several of them
17:21were life-ending injuries.
17:25And based upon
17:27the examination
17:28and the pathologist report,
17:31there could have possibly
17:32been two different
17:34murder weapons
17:35used to stab her.
17:38And so what we'd be
17:39looking for
17:39is possibly two knives,
17:41which would indicate
17:42to us that maybe
17:43we have more
17:43than one assailant,
17:45more than one suspect.
17:58Matt comes back
17:59along with his parents
18:00to the police department.
18:02We knew that we wanted
18:03to clarify some information.
18:06And, you know,
18:07the last thing
18:07about the knife
18:08is, you know,
18:10that piques our attention.
18:11I do want to apologize
18:12for leaving.
18:13That's okay.
18:13I just, it was overwhelming
18:15and he was upset
18:16that I didn't let him finish.
18:18That's okay.
18:19You try to protect it,
18:20but that's totally expected.
18:22And really,
18:23the next thing is
18:24is that, you know,
18:25we talked about,
18:26you know,
18:26doing polygraph,
18:27if you guys, you know,
18:28you all are still
18:29interested in doing that.
18:30And, you know,
18:31I think that's not
18:33the nicest thing
18:35to have to go through.
18:37We've all talked about it
18:38in this case
18:38to the agreement
18:39that that would be
18:40the right thing to do.
18:42We offer him
18:43a polygraph examination,
18:46which he agrees to.
18:47Now, help me out
18:48on this myth or fact.
18:52Is a polygraph test
18:56admissible in court?
18:58No.
18:59You can't even say
19:00whether it was good or bad.
19:02It's just a tool
19:03that backs up
19:03the police officer's observation.
19:07He takes a polygraph examination
19:09and he passes the flying colors
19:11as far as the polygraph operator says.
19:15At this point,
19:16based upon what we know
19:18and the information
19:18that we obtained from Matt,
19:20we have no reason
19:23to believe that Matt's
19:24not telling the truth.
19:26We can corroborate
19:27most of the things
19:29that he said,
19:30where he was at,
19:31what he was doing,
19:32and we feel good
19:33about the fact
19:34that he's telling us the truth.
19:36And we know that
19:38we need to move on.
19:40And now we've got
19:41two other people
19:42that could maybe help
19:43put a timeline together
19:45and figure out
19:45a suspect on this homicide.
19:48We have Tori Adamczyk
19:50and Brian Draper.
19:51And so we know
19:52that our priority
19:53is to begin
19:54to interview these two.
19:57I met Tori Adamczyk
20:00closer to the end
20:01of ninth grade.
20:02Okay.
20:03He wanted to be
20:04a movie director.
20:06Hello, young viewers.
20:08This is my video.
20:10He had a lot of, like,
20:11movie stuff.
20:12He was into horror films.
20:15I liked horror films, too.
20:19He thought the weirdest
20:20things were so funny,
20:23which made me, I think,
20:24connect to him even more.
20:31Sunday night,
20:32we went to Tori's home
20:34and interviewed him
20:36along with his parents.
20:39There were two police
20:40officers there,
20:41and they were there
20:42to inform us
20:44that Tori's friend Cassie
20:45had been found
20:47murdered
20:49in a house
20:49where she had been
20:50house-sitting.
20:54Tori told a whole
20:55chain of events
20:56about arriving at the house,
20:58watching a movie,
20:59playing on the
20:59Universal Weight Machine
21:01downstairs,
21:02eating popsicles.
21:04Then,
21:05him and Brian
21:06had left.
21:07It was around
21:089, 30, 10 o'clock.
21:10They leave the house
21:12where Cassie is
21:12the house-sitting,
21:13and they go to a movie
21:15at the Carmike
21:17local theater,
21:18and they watch
21:19the movie Pulse.
21:22And after the movie,
21:23they went back home
21:24to Tori's house.
21:26I was saying to them,
21:28you don't honestly believe
21:29these kids had anything
21:30to do with it, do you?
21:31Something obviously
21:32happened after they left.
21:34There's no way
21:35these two boys
21:36could have been involved
21:37in anything like this.
21:40It ends with
21:42them stating
21:44that they were
21:46going to go over
21:47to Brian's house
21:48because Brian and Tori
21:50were the last ones
21:52that had seen her.
21:57Me and Brian
21:58first met
21:59in eighth grade.
22:03Brian loved skateboarding.
22:05He would film
22:06skateboard stuff.
22:08He would set the camera
22:09somewhere,
22:10and then we would all
22:10just try to skateboard
22:11and do stuff,
22:12you know.
22:13Brian,
22:14he put more
22:15to help.
22:15I'll try to make it
22:16a simple bottle.
22:18Brian,
22:18he hung out
22:19a little group of people
22:21that like to be different.
22:23He was funny.
22:25He tried to be funny.
22:29That wasn't good.
22:36on Sunday night late,
22:38there was a knock
22:39on the door,
22:40and it was two detectives.
22:43They wanted to talk
22:44to Brian.
22:45Brian was asleep,
22:46so I went down
22:47and woke him up.
22:50I was very surprised
22:52they were even
22:52at my door.
22:54He was a nice,
22:56well-adjusted kid.
22:57He's very,
22:57very cooperative.
23:00Brian and Tori's
23:03story matches up
23:04for the most part
23:05of what they did,
23:06and they cooperate
23:07each other's story
23:08that night.
23:13But then I asked him
23:14questions like,
23:15hey, what was
23:16the movie about?
23:17He couldn't tell me
23:18what the movie was about.
23:19He couldn't tell me
23:20what room it was in,
23:21where, what side
23:22of the building,
23:23and that struck us
23:24as a little bit odd.
23:26We feel like we want
23:27to continue to interview
23:29Brian to get more clarity
23:30about what actually happened.
23:34The detectives asked
23:35if they could interview
23:36Brian again,
23:40and we said,
23:42okay.
23:59I was assigned
24:00with a couple other
24:01detectives to go
24:02and interview staff
24:03and interview other students
24:05at Pocatello High School,
24:07which is where
24:08Cassie, Matt,
24:09and Tori,
24:10and Brian all went.
24:13There were cops
24:13in the hallway.
24:15There were cops
24:16in the office.
24:16There were cops
24:17in the vice principal's office.
24:20They were asking
24:21all sorts of questions,
24:22and how well did I know them,
24:23and did I know Brian and Tori,
24:25and did I know Cassie,
24:26and did I know Matt,
24:26did I hang out with them,
24:27did I talk to them?
24:29It was just the telephone game.
24:31It was kids 16
24:32all gossiping about it,
24:34and, you know,
24:34we had no idea,
24:35but we were trying
24:36to get to the bottom of it,
24:37you know,
24:37because this was our friend.
24:43Some of the kids
24:44at the high school
24:45kept wanting
24:46to either ask
24:47about Matt
24:48or sort of infer
24:50that Matt
24:51may have been involved.
24:52It really came down
24:54to, well,
24:56he's the boyfriend,
24:57so, you know,
24:59he supposedly
24:59is the last person
25:00to see her alive.
25:03I didn't believe it
25:04for one second.
25:05That's because I knew him.
25:07I was like, no,
25:08it's just some crazy psycho
25:10passing through
25:11Pocatello, Idaho.
25:14The general impression
25:16that people had
25:17of Cassie
25:17was that she was
25:18very sweet,
25:20friendly,
25:20and open.
25:22Nobody told us,
25:23oh, she's been,
25:24you know,
25:24secretly seeing
25:25this other older guy
25:27or anything like that.
25:28She wasn't involved
25:30in the party crowd.
25:31She wasn't involved
25:32in drugs.
25:33So there was really
25:34nothing that we
25:35left the school
25:36going, aha,
25:37it's this
25:38or it's that.
25:46We get a second
25:47opportunity
25:48to interview
25:49Brian Draper,
25:50and it's
25:51at the police station.
25:56We let him go in
25:58and speak without us
26:00because Brian
26:02had nothing
26:03to do with it.
26:04He may know more,
26:06but he had nothing
26:07to do with it.
26:08Hey, Brian.
26:09Hey.
26:10Here we go.
26:11We talked to your folks
26:13and I told them
26:14and they're filled in.
26:15They're comfortable
26:16with the fact
26:17that we'll sit down
26:17and kind of...
26:18I think that was
26:19the strategy with him
26:20was just making sure
26:20that we kind of
26:21treated him
26:23very gentle.
26:24Of course,
26:24you're not under arrest.
26:26You're free to leave.
26:27And if you don't have
26:28to answer any questions
26:29that you don't want to...
26:30I have to treat him
26:31like, you know,
26:32for lack of a better term,
26:33with kid gloves.
26:34You're one of the last
26:35three people,
26:36you know,
26:37to see Cassie.
26:38And so it's just
26:39so important and critical
26:40that we just
26:41answer some questions
26:42and we give by
26:43some of those things.
26:43He's consistent
26:44on the story
26:45that he gave us before.
26:47I remember we left
26:48around 9.30.
26:50Brian said that
26:51they had gone to
26:52the movie theater
26:52to watch a horror movie.
26:54I think the only one
26:55playing was Polos
26:57and that was at
26:5710 o'clock.
26:58Okay.
27:00Do you like movies?
27:01Yes.
27:02What kind of movies?
27:02What's your favorite
27:03kind of movies?
27:03I like horror movies.
27:04Okay.
27:05And then we begin
27:06to press in a little bit
27:08on the movie
27:08that he attended.
27:10And you're absolutely,
27:13unequivocally,
27:13positive
27:14that you two
27:16went into Pulse.
27:18You two bought
27:19tickets for Pulse.
27:20Yeah.
27:21Okay.
27:22Okay.
27:23So what was the movie
27:25you bought?
27:28I can't really
27:29exactly explain
27:30any movies.
27:32I haven't paid
27:33attention to it.
27:35You leave
27:35both parts to the movie.
27:36There's so many
27:37characters you can
27:38hook us up with
27:39to describe somebody
27:40in the movie,
27:40describe what happened.
27:42Anything.
27:42What's the whole
27:43premise or the plot
27:44of the movie?
27:45What's it all about?
27:47I don't exactly know.
27:49I remember being
27:53really bored.
27:55so how long
27:56do you think
27:56you were inside
27:57that movie theater?
27:58Total.
27:58Grand total.
27:59We were there
27:59for maybe two hours.
28:01Two hours?
28:02You were inside
28:02that movie theater?
28:03Maybe.
28:03And you don't remember
28:05one detail
28:06to help us out?
28:09Did they go to the movie
28:10or did they not
28:11go to the movie?
28:12So you don't remember
28:13anything,
28:13any details
28:14about this movie?
28:15We don't know why.
28:16Brian might be lying
28:17to us
28:18about going
28:18to this movie.
28:20Brian,
28:20we got some problems.
28:22Okay.
28:22Yeah,
28:22you understand.
28:23We got some problems.
28:24You didn't go to the movie.
28:27That's fine.
28:28But you're going to have
28:29to tell us where you went
28:30so that we can put you there.
28:33I can't.
28:34Hold on a sec.
28:35Okay.
28:35Okay.
28:36I can tell you
28:37what we were doing.
28:39I was trying to hide this.
28:41But I guess I have to tell you now.
28:42You're going to have to, man.
28:43What's the only way out?
28:45Um,
28:46we went through cars.
28:49Did that.
28:51And that's getting a lot
28:52until I went to that.
28:55We went through cars.
28:56What does that mean?
28:57Uh,
28:58we checked for the cars
28:59that there are
29:02locked in there.
29:03We're at me.
29:03What was that?
29:04We're at me.
29:05It's where you have to drive.
29:06I don't know.
29:08How many cars,
29:09roughly,
29:09did you open?
29:12Uh,
29:13we opened maybe
29:13four or five.
29:15There were,
29:16a lot of them were locked.
29:17We did find anything.
29:19God.
29:21Okay,
29:21so can you take us
29:22to a car that you went through
29:23and we should find
29:24your fingerprints on that car?
29:26We went to,
29:28I had gloves,
29:30and I was trying
29:31to hide this
29:32because I heard
29:33from a friend
29:33that, um,
29:35that that's, uh,
29:3710 years of prison.
29:38So then listen to me.
29:40Listen to me.
29:41You gotta make sure
29:44that you can verify
29:45what color cars,
29:47because we have
29:48to go verify all that.
29:49I don't know,
29:50collect cars.
29:51Brian was kind of
29:51all over the place
29:52with the vehicle
29:53burglary story.
29:54It wasn't specific
29:55about any of the cars
29:57that they were in
29:58or what,
29:58what they took.
30:00So at this point,
30:01we're unable to
30:03confirm
30:04whether this was
30:05a true story
30:05or whether this was
30:06another lie.
30:08You have wasted
30:10our time
30:11by dicking them out,
30:13okay,
30:13and trying to lie to us.
30:17Don't waste any more
30:18of our time,
30:19okay?
30:20There's still no
30:21physical connection
30:23to the homicide
30:24with regards to Brian
30:25at this point,
30:26but there's something
30:27more that needs
30:28to be delved into.
30:30We're here, you know,
30:31to solve what happened
30:33to Cassie.
30:33Yes, and we didn't know
30:35if you were involved
30:36in that,
30:36and if you are,
30:37that's fine.
30:38We can deal with that.
30:39Fine?
30:39We can deal with that.
30:41But,
30:42I should forget this.
30:43I'm going to kill my friend.
30:45I know I killed Cassie.
30:47Do you know who did?
30:48No, I don't know
30:49who killed Cassie.
30:51Our next step
30:52with Brian
30:53was to offer him
30:54a polygraph examination.
30:56And if we offer you
30:57a polygraph test,
30:58lie detector test,
30:59we're going to ask you
30:59a question.
30:59I'll take it, yes.
31:00We want you to take that.
31:01Of course I'll take it.
31:02All right.
31:05The whole thing worried me.
31:08I was worried
31:09for my family.
31:11I was worried
31:12for my parents
31:13who were elderly.
31:14I was worried
31:14for my daughter.
31:15I was worried
31:17about everything.
31:21And I was extremely
31:23worried for Brian
31:24because he was
31:26so quiet
31:28and withdrawn.
31:31I talked to him
31:33and told him
31:33that he needed
31:34to be honest
31:35about what he knew.
31:39that he knew
31:40and asked him
32:06that he had to
32:11ultimately Brian agreed to come back and submit to a polygraph test there was no chance in hell
32:17my son would have anything to do with this the fact that he agreed to do a lie detector test
32:23told me that that was probably true he's probably going to come clean in the lie detector test as
32:29to what he knows but it will exonerate him but around the time he comes in Andy and I receive
32:38a telephone call from the polygraph examiner and he tells us that Brian wants to talk to us
32:46so we canceled the polygraph and we transitioned to yet another interview with Brian and his parents
32:58I was sitting right next to Brian when he was talking to the interrogators um and so was Pam
33:16just tell me what do you think we didn't leave we we went outside and we parked on the side
33:31of the gate
33:40okay Brian told us that they were going to sneak back in the house and then just scare Matt and
33:47Cassie
34:04were upstairs they began to mess with the electrical panel and shut the lights off an attempt to scare
34:12him and or lure him down the stairs and either he or tori threw a glass at the base of
34:21the stairs
34:21to make a noise to get him to come down the stairs and you know nobody came down
34:25is matt is what's going on if you know that you're down there look there in the light
34:31oh okay okay we just wanted to scare him we're up to the point where where you've seen matt
34:40leaving you think it's about 11 p.m yes it's one thing we used his mom to pull up and
34:46we went out
34:46the window okay he drives off then what so then she leaves and we turn lights off not we look
34:55past
34:56time and we go upstairs
35:01and then we we go out to the room and take all the couch
35:06who's she? Cassie and she just said he's there and he's there and it was like it was us
35:14was that kind of about anything over your face or is there anything
35:17we were bringing the living house that we had actually what kind of like uh Halloween yeah
35:24I mean is it from the show Halloween that no no you know why and then we painted I had
35:30mine was all
35:32black and stuff and just red all over me
35:36so we came up the stairs and we walked over here and
35:40and then it was Tori stepped in front of me and he walked over here and then
35:47Cassie was saying who's there and something I was about to say in her head and then she screamed
36:00and she was really really really hard and it's like I have to kill her I have to kill her
36:05I have to
36:05kill her since it's happening you know wait go and you know he said dude I killed I killed him
36:10like
36:10what are you talking about
36:20when Brian started to tell the detectives what happened
36:31I just was numb
36:41I had to
36:44be supportive for him so that he could get through it
36:49and I was
36:50I was falling apart because I knew what it meant
36:59he was broken crying
37:04he was very emotional
37:10this was not somebody who was trying to get away with something and that way
37:17he couldn't hide the intense emotions that he was going through
37:28and he was like this
37:34he said
37:35my head was like this
37:36your
37:36razzle were up
37:37my old head
37:38it's just me moving
37:40and I just started to walk outside and he chased me out the door
37:45and he said
37:45I told anybody that I'd get in trouble too
37:58so he threatened that if you did if you did tell that that he was doing so
38:03he could be dead
38:03it was clear that Brian admitted that he was there he had not admitted his involvement directly
38:26but he admitted that he was there when it happened
38:30when he admitted that
38:32I knew he was toast
38:34I knew I'd lost my son
38:37I knew it
38:39and I knew there was probably more to the story
38:44I had checked out
38:47I felt like I was watching a movie
38:50somebody else's life
38:54I'm in disbelief
38:57just hearing what happened
39:03I couldn't believe that my son
39:06was even there
39:10maybe
39:11maybe
39:11maybe
39:12maybe
39:12maybe
39:23she was going to leave me
39:27let me let it go
39:32I want cars
39:33we'll keep trying again
39:38we'll
39:39but
39:40we're
39:40we're
39:40we're
39:40we're
39:41we're
39:41we're
39:43But I will stop it.
39:46Cassie, I will stop it.
39:47I will stop it.
39:56I will stop it.
39:58I will stop it.
40:04Pick it.
40:06Come on.
40:08Maybe I'll stand it.
40:09Yeah, come on.
40:10I will stop it.
40:12I will stop it.
40:17You are an incredible voice.
40:19Incredible.
40:22What do you mean?
40:25Thank you guys.
40:26I don't know.
40:28It's been my honor to be okay.
40:35Even though he was naive about the finality
40:37and what was going to happen,
40:39he still went in and told the truth.
40:44And told them what happened.
40:52And did the right thing.
40:58And he's still my son.
41:02And that was...
41:04That never changes.
41:07He will always be my son.
41:17When we had left, he said that we...
41:20They had to get rid of everything.
41:22So we drove clear up there.
41:25Towards the end of the interview,
41:27Brian had indicated to us that, like,
41:29hey, by the way,
41:30we got rid of some things
41:31up in Black Rock Canyon.
41:38Immediately we asked,
41:39would you be willing to show us
41:41where you buried or hid those things?
41:43And he agreed.
41:46And then I, along with the team from Bannock County,
41:49went up to Black Rock Canyon
41:50with Brian Draper and his dad.
41:58They chose this area
41:59because it's fairly remote.
42:01And not a lot of people go up here,
42:03especially at night.
42:04And it's a place that they could
42:05easily be concealed.
42:10So this is roughly the area
42:12that the evidence was buried
42:14and eventually recovered by the police.
42:19When they started digging
42:21where Brian had identified the spot,
42:23I believe the very first thing to come out
42:26was, like, bloody clothing.
42:31Bloody gloves.
42:35Scary Halloween-type masks.
42:40They also found knives inside the hole.
42:49The thing we didn't expect
42:50to find in there
42:52was a videotape.
42:58The videotape was something
43:00that Brian never told us
43:01that was going to be here,
43:03so we were pretty interested at that point
43:05what might be on that videotape.
43:09They tried to destroy it.
43:11It looks like it's been caught on fire.
43:14So the first thing we do
43:15is get it to him.
43:16One of the evidence techs,
43:19he grabs this thing
43:20and he says,
43:20I think I can clean it up
43:22and I think I can get
43:22this thing playing again.
43:25Fast forward a couple hours later,
43:27they call, they say,
43:29we got this tape queued up
43:30out here in the conference room.
43:33The anticipation of going through
43:35and watching it,
43:36you could cut the tension
43:38in the room with a knife.
43:42Nobody in the room
43:43knows what we're about to see.
43:46Could this be video evidence
43:48of the homicide?
43:54Kill them horse-fuck-fucking-one.
43:57I'm telling Cassie Stanley.
43:59Hello, Cassie.
44:01She's going to die.
44:01I can't believe it,
44:02she said.
44:04You know,
44:06I'mã¢ic,
44:06If you've seen it,
44:11you've seen it,
44:11It's a miracle,
44:16isn't it,
44:17It's a miracle.
