00:00Elon Musk has lost his bid to unwind OpenAI's conversion to a for-profit business after a jury
00:06found that he waited too long to file his lawsuit against the non-profit he co-founded with Sam
00:11Altman in 2015. The high-stakes legal spat between the billionaires at times appeared to be more
00:16about a battle for the moral high ground of artificial intelligence rather than what it was,
00:21an allegation by Musk that the non-profit and its leaders betrayed its founding mission by
00:26forming a for-profit business that they used to enrich themselves. The trial offered a glimpse
00:31behind the curtain of the early years at OpenAI and revealed new details about Musk's departure
00:36from the venture in 2018. Of course, it was also an opportunity for all parties to very publicly air
00:42their grievances with each other. Over the three-week trial, the tech world's biggest names
00:46traded barbs and accused each other of deception, greed, and mercurial management tactics. Altman
00:52testified that he was extremely uncomfortable with Musk's 2017 demand for total control of
00:57OpenAI. He said a particularly hair-raising moment came when Musk suggested that he would pass control
01:02of the company to his children if he were ever to die. Jurors also heard about allegations of Musk's
01:08hot temper and a lack of technical AI chops. And leaders at OpenAI also took their fair share of
01:14criticism. Former board members described Altman as creating a toxic culture of lying at the company
01:19and said he showed a pattern of deceptive behavior. Musk's lawyers grilled Brockman about his $30
01:24billion stake in the for-profit company despite not having invested or donated funds. Although the
01:30fireworks in the courtroom have ended, the feud between Musk and Altman is far from over. Musk still
01:35has at least three pending lawsuits against OpenAI, including allegations of antitrust violations over
01:40its partnerships with Microsoft and Apple, plus a suit accusing them of trade secret theft. And we know
01:46Musk plans to appeal.
