00:00:10The
00:00:31Police emergency. I've been shocked.
00:00:34You been shocked?
00:00:36Yeah. The one under shot voource my own door.
00:00:38Where have you been shot?
00:00:41In the side.
00:00:42In the side.
00:00:44Yeah.
00:00:45Keep talking to me.
00:00:47I'm trying to get some help to you.
00:00:50I'm trying to get some help to come to you to help you, okay?
00:00:55I'm trying to get some help to come to you to help you, okay?
00:00:58Can you hear me?
00:01:01Can you hear me?
00:01:06Seconds.
00:01:07That's all it takes for a brutal crime to be committed.
00:01:14My dad's found his daughter on the floor in an absolute pool of blood.
00:01:18But no suspect disappears without a trace.
00:01:22One here.
00:01:22One here.
00:01:23A clue.
00:01:24A fragment.
00:01:26Something is always left behind.
00:01:28It's just finding that inevitable mistake and making the most of it.
00:01:31Do you know anyone who would want to shoot you?
00:01:33Is that better?
00:01:34In the West Midlands, the major crime team follows every lead.
00:01:39You can see that hole's in the curtains just as the bullets have come through.
00:01:43And then we've got the damage in the coving.
00:01:46specialist detectives trained to spot the most subtle of clues it can be little things
00:01:51you see what they were wearing what kind of haircut they had on that day piecing together
00:01:57the truth oh that's a good one and never giving up until those responsible are brought to justice
00:02:10we've got to be there dealing with it quickly our response will be as robust as the offense itself
00:02:42there's two bullet holes through the windows there must be more inside and they found bullet
00:02:48fragment inside the house one fragment one fragment in dudley a quiet suburban street has become the
00:02:57center of a shocking and violent major crime investigation what we really know is about
00:03:0322 minutes past midnight last night a call came in from a lady who's been in a house with her
00:03:10three
00:03:10children two bullets had come through the window and one of them had struck her in the leg she was
00:03:15then taken straight to hospital and the scene was preserved overnight DS Lucy Mooney and DC Charlotte
00:03:23Smith are first to arrive at the scene one in the door and two in the window something else is
00:03:31it that'll
00:03:32be the one that's caught the lady in the hip presumably she's stood right on the other side I mean
00:03:37that
00:03:38makes me think as well did I knock the door and she's gone to answer it I'd say at least
00:03:4590 percent of
00:03:45our jobs have firearms involved in them in one way shape or form hello but what makes this case
00:03:53different is that we've got a victim a 30 year old mother and she was in her own home where
00:04:00she should
00:04:01feel safe with her children and she was shot and she survived by luck yeah let's go right into the
00:04:09top then oh yeah it's hit the wall I was gonna say where was the other one is it literally
00:04:17in the
00:04:17middle of that's the um well that's not even the case is it is it that's the bullet that's the
00:04:24actual
00:04:24bullet yeah that's the actual bullet so you can see that holes in the curtains just about as well
00:04:31as the bullets have come through and then we've got one quite obvious marking the wall there and then
00:04:39the um searching officers have removed that piece of coving so they could obviously see the damage in
00:04:45the coving and the bullets been recovered from in there somewhere they've got to have been on foot
00:04:51no they've got out of that car but then where's the patients unless it was a revolver but if it's
00:04:55a revolver you've shot once you've then got to move the shoot again to get the same place
00:05:02yeah but just the angle of it yeah i know what you mean but then if they've done it on
00:05:06foot where's
00:05:06the car since unless they've been smart enough to pick them up
00:05:13bullet holes and a single fragment are the only evidence detectives have to work with
00:05:19somebody's got urban in the garden unless there's two guns or unless i've done that one first and
00:05:23then done the windows with no obvious motive for the shooting lucy and charlotte pieced together what
00:05:29happened so i went and spoke to dad and it's a young lady and three children that live inside the
00:05:37property she's got up in the middle of the night just to go and get herself a cold drink come
00:05:41down to
00:05:42the front door and then she's been shot my dad's been called by one of the children
00:05:48and gone over and found his daughter on the floor in an absolute pool of blood and
00:05:54she thought she was dying he's saying his daughter's got no issue with anybody
00:05:58she literally just takes the kids to school and her life revolves around her small children by the sounds
00:06:06with at this time looking at the victim herself and her family there's nothing to suggest any reason
00:06:13or any ongoing disputes with anybody that would cause something of this magnitude to happen
00:06:22hello my name's lucy i'm from the police the investigation team that's dealing with it okay
00:06:28no what it was i heard such a bang last night at quarter past 12. send it like steel being
00:06:33knocked
00:06:34or something like that okie dokie thank you very much for your information
00:06:40that might assist us i don't know i just like especially i don't have access to cctv it's just
00:06:44oh yeah is there any way we can get into the look at the cameras he's got it all on
00:06:49his phone
00:06:50and there's no way he can get up here today okay
00:06:52okay cctv opposite the victim's house could give detectives a clearer picture of the events that
00:07:02unfolded hello the barber won't be back till tomorrow we'll just have to press the matter
00:07:10because we're going to need that foot outside now leading the investigation from perry bar police station
00:07:16is detective inspector francis knock is there anyone else who can come just let us in
00:07:21and then we can come and collect the keys from him we can access systems ourselves we won't take
00:07:25anything dotty dot we'll have to try and figure it out with him somehow okay it's in a bit the
00:07:32gaffer
00:07:32wants us to get in there one way or another cctv is almost always the major line of inquiry and
00:07:40the most important source of evidence you know we're looking for vehicles making off at speed we're
00:07:44looking for people running away we're looking for that first starting point as to who is likely to be
00:07:51responsible illegal firearms carry a constant risk of injury or death at any one time an estimated 1000
00:07:59illegal firearms are on the streets of england and wales most of these are smuggled from eastern europe
00:08:07across the channel hidden in vehicles and parcels
00:08:15some starters legal blank firing guns bought online for less than a hundred pounds and converted into lethal weapons
00:08:27a genuine handgun can fetch around 3000 pounds on the black market many offenders dumping them quickly
00:08:34after use in the last year almost 250 have been taken off the streets of the west midlands
00:08:51while the team wait to see if the barber's shop camera yields any results lead cctv coordinator rosie
00:08:58downs is reviewing footage uploaded by one of the victims neighbors so it doesn't point at the offense
00:09:05location itself however it does capture audio and so what we hear at 00 15 33 hours and is five
00:09:14loud bangs
00:09:24followed by an acceleration of a vehicle
00:09:31the audio of the shots confirms that a discharge happened so you you couple that cctv with the
00:09:38ballistics that were found at the address and you can say five shots were fired at the house that's
00:09:43really important to us but at the moment we don't know who's involved
00:09:52all we can say about the people who committed this offense is they had access to firearms so you
00:09:58would assume that everybody who's involved in this offense is extremely dangerous you're thinking a
00:10:02million miles an hour about the risks it's really really frightening if you don't get them quick
00:10:09you know they might try again
00:10:16you
00:10:41i've been shot you've been shot 14 hours ago a young mother of three was shot through her front door
00:10:53in a brutal drive-by shooting on a suburban street in dudley
00:10:59detectives have no suspects and there's an update on the victim who remains in hospital with a gunshot wound
00:11:06a number of shots fired towards the address she stood behind the front door
00:11:12and blasted through the front door and her pelvis where it remains um she's got serious injuries
00:11:19on that whether she will make a full cover she'll be um so that for life what it's all about
00:11:27is unclear at this point in time but the shooting of a woman in the middle of the night behind
00:11:31her own
00:11:32front door is an exceptionally serious incident it's a real tough starting point because we don't
00:11:37know whether we've got people on foot we don't know if there's more than one vehicle so that all
00:11:40needs to come together from a really determined investigation in the locality really really quickly
00:11:51they've got a massive dog as well i'll tell you this for now
00:11:54it is ferocious hunting down the footage detectives hope will capture the vehicle on camera
00:11:59is pc gurpreet singh when we start looking at cctv the dream is you get footage of it happening and
00:12:08you start tracking it forwards and tracking it back and you get your answers
00:12:19first days of investigations you're dealing with people not being in or people not wanting to talk
00:12:26to you or gaps in your cctv struggling with getting your track and it can be really really frustrating
00:12:34especially when the motive at the current time is still unknown
00:12:38if i were to send you like a link with some timings just like a five minutes clip
00:12:45would you be able to check it and if there is anything would you be able to send it to
00:12:48us
00:12:59to us back at the office a file pc singh has shared has caught the attention of cctv lead rosie
00:13:08downs
00:13:10just after the bangs and the acceleration of the car and what we've identified is this vehicle coming
00:13:16away and the offense location is just up here on the right hand side
00:13:34rosie notices a detail on the car that could make it easier to spot on other cameras
00:14:06so five minutes before the offense takes place
00:14:09we have this vehicle coming down from the direction of birmingham new road
00:14:16with multiple cctv sightings of the car rosie turns to the team responsible for automatic number plate
00:14:22recognition or anpr so i've sent him through the times and he's come back with a vehicle which is hitting
00:14:32ampr in the local area
00:14:40it's passenger headlight is out it's reported stolen on the 2nd of july the day before
00:14:47so there's it definitely looks like it's going to beat the car the audi s3 was stolen prior to the
00:14:55shooting it's been 36 hours since the shots were fired and the clock is ticking to find cctv of the
00:15:04theft
00:15:05just to let you know your car was used um in another incident that's happened people don't tend to use
00:15:12their own cars to commit crime because they come straight back to them so people will steal cars or
00:15:17use associates stolen cars to try and essentially conceal their identity from
00:15:22the place as well as tracking down CCTV of the car theft the team are under
00:15:27pressure to secure more footage from the street where the shots were fired
00:15:31so it's a Audi s3 front headlight is out
00:15:43now footage from the barbershop overlooking the victim's home has finally come in
00:15:54take that back and zoom it in
00:16:01first one second one third the barbershop footage captures three flashes of light
00:16:12consistent with a muzzle flash from a gun and on the passenger side of vehicle one
00:16:20and then the car speeds off at exactly the same time as we have the audio and of
00:16:25the car accelerating away and therefore it's given us confidence that we are
00:16:29following the correct vehicle
00:16:45every week over 200 cars are stolen from the streets of the West Midlands for
00:16:51organized criminals their targets essential to the operation
00:16:55moving drugs carrying weapons and enabling violent attacks behind clone
00:17:00plates that lead investigators nowhere
00:17:05when the job's done a network of chop shops across the region can strip and
00:17:10erase a vehicle within hours wiping the evidence before anyone comes looking but
00:17:17every car leaves a trail ANPR cameras forensic evidence cell site data and in the West Midlands that trail is
00:17:28exactly where the investigation begins
00:17:45it's now 32 hours since a young mother was shot behind her own front door on a suburban street
00:17:52she remains in hospital with life-changing injuries she remains in hospital with life-changing injuries and the only lead
00:17:57is a stolen Audi S3
00:17:59so when you start looking at Audi S3 in the area with the headlights out
00:18:06PE 15 comes up
00:18:08PE 15 comes up
00:18:09so last night we put a PNC4 F marker on
00:18:11ALB stops only with a strategy around it for everybody to be arrested
00:18:15if anyone does come across it parked up then it will go off and we'll get it
00:18:19friends here and put
00:18:20with the investigation evolving rapidly the team's priority is locating the stolen car
00:18:26this shows the defending vehicle being stolen
00:18:31detective sergeant Lindsey Davenport has just received footage of the theft sent in by the Audi owner's neighbor
00:18:50you can clearly see it's been light up and so it's been activated with the kit
00:18:55rather than small forcing entry to the vehicle
00:19:14so we're trying to understand if the vehicle previous owner has kept a key
00:19:21and if so if they've got something to do with knowing where that car is now
00:19:25and either that person or anyone associated with them
00:19:29have stolen this vehicle
00:19:31at the moment there's nothing to suggest any link between the registered keeper of the car
00:19:36and anybody else
00:19:38however it is a little bit suspicious that somebody appears
00:19:42to just walk down the road, unlock the car and drive it away
00:19:48we're keeping an open mind as to how somebody might have another key for that car
00:19:54after the theft has taken place we've got the ANPR hit of the last sighting of that vehicle
00:20:01travelling through and then we've got nothing but we're in this junction itself
00:20:05the CCTV team continues to track the stolen Audi towards the outskirts of Dudley
00:20:11that's the most popular route out
00:20:13feels strange that he'd be heading out to like Himalayan Wanborn
00:20:16albeit if you've got a place that you're looking to dump the car
00:20:20and you're in contact with somebody
00:20:21yeah
00:20:22do you leave it in the countryside?
00:20:29when you start moving into more rural areas
00:20:32you have massive stretches of road that aren't lit very well
00:20:35less cameras
00:20:37houses even if there aren't any
00:20:39are really far back off the country road
00:20:42so if they did have cameras
00:20:43the chances of them catching anything is linked to none
00:20:46with the Audi disappearing into miles of dark country roads
00:20:50detectives may have lost their only lead in the case
00:20:54but by rewinding the cameras
00:20:56they're about to get their first glimpse of a suspect
00:21:10eight days ago an Audi S3 was stolen
00:21:13by the next night it's at the centre of a violent attack
00:21:17as gunmen shoot a young mother in her own home
00:21:27leaving her in hospital with life-changing injuries
00:21:32nothing scares the public more than firearms being discharged on the streets
00:21:36when you see an innocent person injured and seriously injured as a result
00:21:39just goes to show the possible consequences of this type of crime
00:21:43to be fair it sounds like the car
00:21:47it's gonna be the car isn't it?
00:21:48which way is it going on?
00:21:50led by detective inspector Nock
00:21:52major crime team one are hunting the Audi's trail
00:21:56piecing together its movements in the deadly aftermath
00:22:01there is no sense to anywhere that your roads go
00:22:04yeah
00:22:06but the trail runs cold
00:22:07the Audi seemingly vanishing into the night
00:22:15she said it hasn't gone here or here
00:22:17so then we skipped to here and it didn't pass
00:22:21as they wait for the Audi to resurface
00:22:24detectives rewind the clock
00:22:26retracing its movements before the shooting
00:22:29so we got it to Weaver's Rides
00:22:32which is a car park
00:22:34not covered by CCTV
00:22:36and it backs onto a canal
00:22:3924 hours before the shooting
00:22:41CCTV captures the Audi entering a car park off Weaver's Rides
00:22:46around 3 miles from the scene of the attack
00:22:48there's no CCTV in the car park
00:22:51but we can see somebody walking away from it
00:23:00the figure is believed to be the car thief
00:23:02but for the next 23 hours
00:23:05no one is seen entering or leaving the car park
00:23:11until 30 minutes before the shooting
00:23:16when the Audi pulls out
00:23:20now the team faces a critical question
00:23:23how did the driver get back to the car?
00:23:25we'd need to have a look at access points
00:23:28onto Weaver's Rides
00:23:29obviously we noticed the canal
00:23:31and then we start to look at the canal entrances
00:23:33around that
00:23:33the theory being that somebody's been dropped off
00:23:36walked along the canal
00:23:39quite quickly we identified a location
00:23:42covering the next entrance along to the canal towpath
00:23:46it's here that we identified a vehicle pulling up
00:23:59ten minutes before the Audi leaves Weaver's Rides
00:24:02CCTV captures another car pulling up on the opposite side of the canal
00:24:14three people get out
00:24:17one stays with the vehicle
00:24:19the other two head across the towpath towards the car park
00:24:29whilst it is dark you do start to see some features on the clothing
00:24:38and it was from here that we were able to look at local ANPR cameras
00:24:42to see if we can identify what that second vehicle was
00:24:48that's a big break
00:24:48because we've obviously got a vehicle
00:24:51a vehicle that didn't want to go into Weaver's Rides
00:24:53and therefore a vehicle that somebody wants us not to see
00:24:56so identifying that vehicle
00:24:58is potentially going to give us something which comes back to a suspect
00:25:05right good morning everyone
00:25:06welcome to the status briefing for Operation Ice Fox
00:25:10pre-offense now
00:25:12so our Audi basically goes from the theft
00:25:14down to Weaver's Rides
00:25:16which is where it gets dumped after the theft right here
00:25:19we're on shooting day
00:25:21Audi emerges from here at 23.39
00:25:24at 23.29
00:25:26a dark vehicle comes down the road from here
00:25:29stays there for a couple of minutes
00:25:30here
00:25:32and then it looks like three people emerge from the vehicle
00:25:35the passenger walks around and swaps with the driver
00:25:39the driver and another passenger
00:25:40walk out of the vehicle
00:25:42one of them puts it up
00:25:43and they walk onto the canal towpath
00:25:4510 minutes before our car comes out
00:25:47so what is it?
00:25:48it's a BMW 3
00:25:49330 diesel
00:25:50M Sport
00:25:51auto in black
00:25:52insured to Kyle Straker
00:25:54it's the policy holder of the insurance
00:25:56and the only known driver on that vehicle since
00:25:58June 2025
00:26:01the owner of the BMW
00:26:02the owner of the BMW
00:26:02Kyle Straker
00:26:03is no stranger to police
00:26:05a career criminal
00:26:07with a string of convictions
00:26:08and deep-rooted links to organized crime
00:26:11now we can look at
00:26:12Kyle Straker
00:26:13his background
00:26:14the intelligence around him
00:26:16his previous convictions
00:26:17his telecoms work
00:26:19his financials
00:26:20and we can start to do an investigation
00:26:22into Kyle Straker
00:26:23at the same time
00:26:24as we do an investigation into the shooting
00:26:26in the hope that those two will meet
00:26:29as the prime suspect
00:26:31Straker needs to be brought in for questioning
00:26:34but first
00:26:34the team must find him
00:26:38his BMW
00:26:39keep the toll
00:26:39839
00:26:42they trace his movements through financial records
00:26:45and telecoms data
00:26:47hiya
00:26:47it's DC Smith calling from West Midlands Police
00:26:49financial intelligence can really assist us in an investigation
00:26:53but just like CCTV
00:26:55sometimes when you think you're going to get a lot
00:26:57you might get absolutely nothing at all
00:26:59so we've got
00:27:00an attempt murder investigation
00:27:02that we're running at the moment
00:27:03one of our suspects
00:27:04has used the M6 toll
00:27:06I'm just wondering
00:27:08if we've got the time
00:27:09the exact time of the transaction
00:27:10of how much
00:27:11what information
00:27:12would we be able to get
00:27:13if we sent a data protection form through?
00:27:16when you're looking into people's financials
00:27:18it can massively help you house somebody
00:27:19especially if you've got a number of locations
00:27:22where you think they could be
00:27:23it can be little things such as
00:27:25earlier in the day
00:27:26they might have been to a shop
00:27:28you go to the shop
00:27:29you get the footage
00:27:30and you see what they were wearing
00:27:31what kind of haircut they had on that day
00:27:34things like that
00:27:37we have come up with a couple of addresses of interest
00:27:41that just need a bit more digging as to
00:27:43where those places are
00:27:45in relation to all the ANPRs
00:27:46and who lives there
00:27:48and what we can link to him really
00:27:51the issue we've got with him
00:27:52is he's got a registered address in Wolverhampton
00:27:54looking at the ANPR hits of his vehicle
00:27:57and looking at the transactions that he makes
00:27:58it doesn't look like he lives in Wolverhampton
00:28:00he looks like he lives more over the Tamworth area
00:28:04I am a genius
00:28:07a series of cash transactions
00:28:09link Straker to a woman
00:28:12who's that?
00:28:13I'm sorry
00:28:14I'm sorry
00:28:15where does she live then?
00:28:20it's a good enough shot
00:28:22as the net tightens around Straker
00:28:25there's a breakthrough in the search for the missing Audi
00:28:29change the planes
00:28:31the car running on dead plates
00:28:33is flagged on ANPR
00:28:35we'll get the light out
00:28:37very dirty
00:28:39yes Lynn
00:28:40yes
00:28:43yes it's definitely a clone flight
00:28:46we've got it
00:28:48we tend to find that
00:28:49where people are changing plates
00:28:50that they've thought through
00:28:52what they're going to be doing
00:28:53and how they're going to
00:28:54try and get away with it afterwards
00:28:55ultimately it's a way to try and throw us off the scent
00:28:59now it's been identified
00:29:00the Audi starts lighting up cameras
00:29:0320 miles from the crime scene
00:29:04on the opposite side of Birmingham
00:29:08Tamworth
00:29:13that's after
00:29:14so it's a direct journey to Tamworth
00:29:19CCTV shows both the Audi and Kyle Straker's BMW
00:29:23making the same journey after the shooting
00:29:34the girls have tracked it to the ANPR camera
00:29:38so they travel up in convoy
00:29:41up to Tamworth areas
00:29:45that has the front headlight out
00:29:51as the team closes in on Kyle Straker
00:29:53new footage emerges
00:29:55placing the Audi with its dead plates
00:29:58in a car park less than two hours after the shooting
00:30:01in a car park
00:30:10quite tall isn't it?
00:30:11I don't know
00:30:15good clothing there for you
00:30:16yeah
00:30:18got that marked on the left chest
00:30:20he's not that young either is he?
00:30:23let me just check Kieran Atkins
00:30:26let me just check Kieran Atkins
00:30:26I don't think he is
00:30:28oh you know what?
00:30:30I think it is
00:30:34how weird is that?
00:30:36the driver bears a striking resemblance to Kieran Atkins
00:30:39a man already known to the police
00:30:42his number is on Kyle Straker's phone records
00:30:44on the night of the shooting
00:30:46he's the bloke that he's on the phone to constantly
00:30:49before 10 to 11
00:30:50we already know that Kyle Straker is involved in this incident
00:30:54we're looking at his phone contacts throughout the time period
00:30:59and we can see Kieran Atkins features
00:31:02now we don't know on reading that information alone
00:31:05what exactly Kieran Atkins involvement in this offence is if any
00:31:08all of a sudden we've got Kieran Atkins in our Audi
00:31:12which is another great break in the investigation
00:31:15right Liz we need to do some work around here
00:31:18excellente
00:31:19anticipate we'll be raising as a suspect in the next
00:31:22hopefully in the next five or six hours
00:31:34linking suspects Kieran Atkins and Kyle Straker
00:31:37is a breakthrough for Major Crime Team 1
00:31:40and now new evidence has emerged
00:31:43that may explain the motive behind the shooting
00:31:45the case theory is that
00:31:48this is the debt to the responsible OCG
00:31:51a man's birth called Kyle Straker
00:31:54this is likely to be a
00:31:57they're kind of a
00:31:58you better pay up type of evidence
00:32:00whether they intended to hit the female target
00:32:03or whether they didn't
00:32:04but the team discover no one in the house is responsible for that debt
00:32:13Conflicts can start with something small
00:32:15a petty argument
00:32:17a falling out
00:32:18or an unpaid drug debt
00:32:23retaliation is often swift
00:32:24but the information they act on isn't always reliable
00:32:29targets are misidentified
00:32:32addresses are wrong
00:32:34the consequences of which can be devastating because violence tied to drugs doesn't stay contained
00:32:42across the region
00:32:44drug supply drives organized gang activity
00:32:47often bringing violence
00:32:49kidnappings firearms
00:32:51and ruthless debt enforcement in its wake
00:32:57and when the violence spills onto residential streets in the West Midlands
00:33:01it's ordinary families who can end up paying the price
00:33:10as the investigation gathers pace
00:33:13as the investigation gathers pace
00:33:14Rosie uncovers a crucial piece of CCTV from the night of the shooting
00:33:17traced back through Straker's financial records
00:33:22so we had details as a withdrawal of cash in the kind of Coesley, Sedgley area
00:33:28at quarter to eleven on the evening on the 2nd of July from Carl Straker
00:33:33so CCTV was recovered from this location
00:33:37and lo and behold
00:33:40what we see is the BMW pulling up outside of the post office
00:33:49the use of Straker's bank card a short time prior to when we see our BMW on CCTV is really
00:33:56useful for a number of reasons
00:33:57first of all it gives us a location for the BMW
00:34:00because the CCTV around the cash point which shows the BMW arrive
00:34:04secondly it gives us a pinpoint and an identification for Straker himself
00:34:08because we see a person on CCTV get out of that vehicle and use his bank card to commit a
00:34:13transaction
00:34:14so there is a high probability that that is him
00:34:18the really important thing about this CCTV for us
00:34:21was when he gets out of the car to make the cash withdrawal
00:34:23he locks the car
00:34:25suggesting he was the only occupant of the car at that time
00:34:30Shortly after withdrawing the cash
00:34:33detectives believe Straker collects his two co-offenders
00:34:36drives to the canal where two of the men switch from the BMW into the Audi
00:34:47It's a hot task, we're going to be jacking up as quick as we possibly can
00:34:50Thanks Barry, cheers fight
00:34:53DI Francis Nock has been given the green light to arrest Kyle Straker
00:34:58BMW 3, 330 diesel, M Sport auto in black
00:35:01insured to Kyle Straker
00:35:03he's the policy holder of the insurance and the only name driver
00:35:06A marker is placed on Straker's BMW
00:35:09We've got to do that as quickly as possible because the people we've identified
00:35:12are a risk to the victims, they're a risk to the community
00:35:16The moment his car is picked up by ANPR
00:35:20armed officers will move in
00:35:22I'll confirm that now
00:35:25Once somebody's been identified in an investigation as a suspect, especially in a firearm job
00:35:31If you don't get them quick enough, they might dispose of evidence
00:35:35They might hurt somebody else
00:35:37The priority right now is Kyle Straker
00:35:41Armed response officers kit up and prepare to intercept Kyle Straker's vehicle
00:35:48Equipped with carbines, tasers and purpose-built armed response vehicles called ARVs
00:35:54These specially trained officers operate with precision
00:35:58We're looking to meet you
00:36:04Shortly before 10pm, Straker's BMW triggers an ANPR camera on the outskirts of Birmingham
00:36:11Put the blues on please, blues on
00:36:13OK, ARVs, get in a line then
00:36:15In a tightly coordinated manoeuvre
00:36:18Four ARVs, supported by a dog unit and aerial surveillance, prepare to strike
00:36:24Come on
00:36:31Show me your hands, show me your hands
00:36:32Show me your hands
00:36:34Show me your hands
00:36:45Show me your hands
00:36:52Police emergency
00:36:52I've been shot
00:36:54You've been shot?
00:36:55Yeah, the mother shot my own dog
00:36:58A mother of three has been shot in her home in a brutal attack
00:37:02And is in hospital with life-changing injuries
00:37:07Now, Major Crime Team 1 has finally tracked down the suspected gunman
00:37:12We always look for the easiest and most effective way to bring people into custody safely
00:37:17And for Kyle Straker, that is a strike on his vehicle
00:37:27Armed response officers are moving in to stop suspect Kyle Straker
00:37:33OK, ARVs, get in a line then
00:37:35Come on
00:37:38Show me your hands now
00:37:39Show me your hands
00:37:40Show me your hands
00:37:42Show me your hands
00:37:42Hands, hands
00:37:44There you go
00:37:44Get your hands up now
00:37:45Out of here come
00:37:47Unlock the door
00:37:49Unlock the door
00:37:53OK, drop me home
00:37:58Put me home
00:38:02Anyone in the bathroom, Amy?
00:38:03I said there's nobody
00:38:04Turn your back now
00:38:09Driver secure
00:38:24the strategy around the vehicle because of the offense and the involvement of the vehicle was
00:38:28to arrest all occupants on suspicion of the attempted murder there was a passenger in the
00:38:34vehicle when it was stopped a chap by the name of Ethan Colborne at this point in time we don't
00:38:39know whether Ethan Colborne is something to do with the investigation or not we've had information
00:39:04we've received information that is genuinely if I knew more I wouldn't be able to tell you
00:39:14so that's why we're here that's why you've got on response during the stop the team recover three
00:39:23phones I put that in airplane mode I've done out of that one I can't swipe up and down on
00:39:28they could
00:39:30contain evidence to help secure a conviction against Straker I'll eat a bag three bags things that yeah
00:39:37yeah the amount of data that is now stored on somebody's mobile phone is more than most
00:39:44computers depending on your privacy settings and how you set your phone up it can store you know
00:39:50all your messages all your pictures videos your locations and if we can access those phones
00:39:56download that information and review it it can open up investigations in a whole new way
00:40:04even if there's nothing on you guys we'll just have you can be held here for a little bit so
00:40:07you do
00:40:08what you need to do you do what you need to do is there anything in the car that we
00:40:14need to know about
00:40:14no there's nothing at all this is not Kyle Straker's first interaction with police he knows right from
00:40:21the moment the blue lights go on behind him how he's got to play it and he's got to play
00:40:25it and as an
00:40:26innocent man because he knows this body-worn camera might be shown to a jury in due course he's an
00:40:31organized criminal he's immediately thinking about how his best to present himself listen to me you
00:40:36both are under arrest for a temp murder anything you do say never given evidence murder for what
00:40:41that'll be explained to you at the custody block all right
00:40:50two weeks on from the shooting Kyle Straker the group's key suspect is finally in custody
00:40:57the offense please the offense attempted earlier
00:41:25Ethan Colburn the passenger in Straker's car is unknown to major crime team one
00:41:31but he's detained while detectives determine what role if any he played
00:41:43when you've got people in custody you've got 24 hours in the first instance you've got 36 hours if
00:41:50you can convince superintendent to extend it that far if you want them any longer than that you need to
00:41:55go
00:41:55to a court and obtain a warrant of further detention that means in custody everything has to move quickly
00:42:00and there's lots to do we've got a circumstantial case at the moment we need to make sure we've we've
00:42:06overturned every stone and left nothing to chance when we approach CPS for charging advice
00:42:16in terms of strainer we put Mark on his BMW last night uh it got on the move uh about
00:42:22what half nine
00:42:23something like that coming from Tamworth back over to Dudley after nearly two days of inactivity the
00:42:29ARV's got behind it he was he was arrested from the vehicle also in the vehicle was an Ethan Colborne
00:42:36he
00:42:37lives in Tipton kind of in a very similar area to where um here in Atkins lives so we don't
00:42:43know the
00:42:43relevance of Ethan Colborne at the moment what we've got in the immediacy is three phones two iPhones and
00:42:49a Nokia Bernard Straker's iPhone is switched on and being accepted by DF on an urgent so fingers
00:42:54crossed that's got some stuff in it we have got a quite a nice custody time in terms of kind
00:42:59of
00:43:0011 o'clock so that takes us through to 11 o'clock tonight 11 o'clock tomorrow morning when there's
00:43:04a
00:43:04section 42 extension but currently essentially we're not there we need more the team now have
00:43:11just 24 hours to produce further evidence to keep Carl Straker in custody well I'm going to be here
00:43:17to it till a ridiculous time because obviously this operation practice is going on in the background
00:43:22detectives fast-track phone analysis and intensify the search for more CCTV what we've got is a team
00:43:30tracking this car forwards the next positive sighting of it is the AMPL camera that you're going to be
00:43:38tracking back from at zero there are 56 between here 25 minutes and here it's a 10 minute journey
00:43:43it's taking them 25 minutes so we need to understand where they've gone somebody get side and rear
00:43:51the photographs of corn for one and close up photographs of his tattoo on the back it's left
00:43:57on following his arrest Straker's BMW was impounded and sent straight to forensics for analysis the team
00:44:07work in full protective suits masks and double gloves one stray hair or one skin cell could contaminate a
00:44:14sample and destroy its value in court we're looking at getting gunshot residue but of course gunshot
00:44:21residue has a finite window where it's useful I'm swabbing the steering wheel the gear lever and the
00:44:28iDrive controller gunshot residue is microscopic invisible to the naked eye particles of lead barium and
00:44:38antimony expel when a firearm is discharged settling on everything nearby on a person it could be gone
00:44:45within hours on a hard surface left undisturbed it can last indefinitely the clock started the moment
00:44:53that trigger was pulled bank card which is wrapped in a sock which is unusual wrapped in the sock hidden
00:45:02in
00:45:02the door okay is that usb stick well it's a usb is here yeah that's in the cart with the
00:45:07glove box 83, 24, 20, 60, 84
00:45:15roughly 425. As the entire team works flat out to find the evidence needed to charge Straker and
00:45:21Colburn a warrant is issued for the arrest of Kieran Atkins but his phone has gone dead and detectives are
00:45:30struggling to track him down when you've got suspects still outstanding like in this case Kieran Atkins
00:45:38it's reasonable to believe that when we arrested Straker and Colburn their families might have passed
00:45:43that information on outstanding suspects then try and do as much as they can to try and stop themselves
00:45:50being caught such as dropping their phone moving address maybe trying to leave the country and it
00:45:57makes it a lot harder for us to try and find them then
00:46:04there's three response to all this fence we could see on ccv so we believe we've got two of them
00:46:08here in atkins is the outstanding that's the home address of his top contacts and appears to be his top
00:46:15cell theory would be he's laying low with her at the moment
00:46:20analysis of atkins old handset shows repeated calls to a number registered in west brummage
00:46:27we know from intelligence that he's got a girlfriend who lives in a block of flats in that area
00:46:34so what we've then done is deployed into the area to see whether we can pick him up on any
00:46:38cc tv
00:46:41before an arrest can be made di francis knock needs proof that kieran atkins is living at the flat
00:46:48a surveillance team is deployed to the area
00:46:54we're coming into the traffic now so put the blues on please blues on
00:46:58the team confirm it's kieran atkins
00:47:05so there's a lot of risk in relation to an armed arrest because even though they're trained officers
00:47:11you're putting firearms in that area potentially with somebody who also has guns
00:47:18armed officers move in state red strike strike strike
00:47:34now hands behind your back
00:47:40one secure you got anything on you just weave just weave
00:47:51we haven't found the firearm yet so he could have access to that he could dispose of it
00:47:58having them in custody is in the end we want to get them charged for this offense between the three
00:48:03of
00:48:03them everybody who's involved in this offense is extremely dangerous but we need more to charge
00:48:08these three suspects hello mate you're okay what is it kieran atkins yeah
00:48:16i guess phone call tonight uh i've yet to talk to the officers about anything at the moment
00:48:21but uh we'll go through all that what has he been arrested for attempted murder yeah
00:48:26and approximately zero zero 20 hours yeah the offender discharged the firearm from a silver audi s3
00:48:35you're going to be staying here for the purpose of securing and preserving evidence that is
00:48:39basically a way of saying we need to interview you we've obviously got a lot of other stuff that
00:48:43we need to do as part of this investigation all right take or use any drugs hearing cocaine cannabis
00:48:48cannabis cannabis when did you last have a name earlier on how much drug
00:48:55cannabis how much have you had today probably three spits three spits today
00:49:01anything else you want to tell me i'll get a phone call tonight or no
00:49:05uh gonna be up front i'm doubtful as soon as it is able that you are allowed to have a
00:49:10phone call
00:49:10we will tell you and you can make a phone call all right is it your girlfriend you want to
00:49:13talk to
00:49:13yeah yeah is your girlfriend's number on this just so i can take it yeah yeah you can keep but
00:49:18i'll write
00:49:19it down with three suspects now in custody straker atkins and colburn police have 24 hours to convince
00:49:28the cps to press charges or they walk
00:49:41a horrendous late night shooting has left a mother of three in hospital with life-changing
00:49:46injuries armed police have arrested suspects kyle straker and ethan colburn
00:49:59and now kieran atkins is in custody after being arrested near his girlfriend's home
00:50:14at perry bar ds lucy mooney has made a breakthrough in the hunt for the stolen audi
00:50:20which hasn't been seen on camera for two days the audi moves on the 12th to the 13th overnight
00:50:27and when it's deposited on the 13th the people have jumped over the wall there effectively
00:50:35this is our stolen audi that somebody's tried to put a cover over and then
00:50:40we've been in front of it to try and conceal it there's three people that come out
00:50:49where the audi's deposited just in the corner here you see a couple of figures moving around
00:50:56it's the taxes that they're called to come and collect them
00:51:01the mail on the left looks to go mr straker the one next to him atkins because of the size
00:51:09of him
00:51:11and then there's another appears to be a white lads getting into the front of the taxi there
00:51:20cctv now links straker atkins and potentially colburn to the stolen audi
00:51:32as the police sees the audi and it heads to forensics detectives focus on tying colburn to the
00:51:39investigation ethan colburn was arrested by accident out of strikers bmw looking into his phone work yes
00:51:47he's in contact with striker on the daily offense but it doesn't prove anything on its own it just
00:51:52shows that they're friends and they're talking without more evidence colburn's not going to be
00:51:57able to be charged for this fence with stronger evidence needed to charge ethan colburn detectives
00:52:04bring him in for questioning even you were arrested uh yesterday 23 48 hours uh on suspicion of um
00:52:14attempted murder what can you tell me about this incident no comment two vehicles were involved in
00:52:22this offense the first vehicle i want to ask you about is a it's a gray audi a3 quattro what
00:52:29can you
00:52:29tell me about this vehicle no comment do you know who owns it no comment
00:52:34okay i want to talk as well now about uh second vehicle that was involved in this and this is
00:52:40uh
00:52:40the black bmw this is the vehicle that you were arrested from yesterday what can you tell me about
00:52:46this vehicle no comment okay who owns that vehicle no comment kyle straker how do you know him
00:52:54talk to you about your your knowledge of firearms have you used firearms before
00:52:58no comment okay did you have access to firearms is there anything that you want to
00:53:05have clarify explain at all in that case the time is 17 27 and i'll be having an interview here
00:53:18now it's kyle straker's turn to be interviewed
00:53:23you were arrested on suspicion of attempt murder do you understand what attempted murder is
00:53:28yeah can you describe it to me i've attempted to murder somebody perfect at approximately
00:53:36quarter past midnight on the third of july five shots were fired the victim had been walking down
00:53:41the stairs of a property tell me everything you know about this incident no comment and tell me about
00:53:46where you were around quarter past midnight on the third of july no comment were you at home no comment
00:53:53was this all a mistake no comment
00:53:57straker isn't talking but the forensic team have completed their analysis of his bmw
00:54:03and now the audi has arrived at the lab mr straker he's driving license
00:54:10i've got several sets of car keys as well yeah we've got an audi audi key there
00:54:22the car keys link carl straker to the vehicle used in the shooting
00:54:26it's a major breakthrough in the investigation
00:54:33right we're going to get to work
00:54:36detectives must now determine ethan colburn's role
00:54:38if any and build a robust case to present to the cps
00:54:43so briefly you will be aware of course we've got kieran atkins but we don't know the relevance of
00:54:50ethan colburn at the moment yeah obviously we'll treat him with caution not to notwithstanding
00:54:55that carl straker is our focus thank you very much everybody
00:55:01we've got lots and lots going on with the investigation with these people in custody so
00:55:05our focus needs to be getting through these custody periods making sure we secure and preserve all the
00:55:11possible evidence to make our case when we come to charging advice as good as it can possibly be
00:55:18tell me about the firearm in the vehicle no comment did you know about the firearm no comment
00:55:26who had the firearm no comment whilst carl straker continues to be interviewed
00:55:32charlotte is conducting a thorough analysis of his phones this is a picture that we've recovered
00:55:39from strikers handset download on the 11th floor at 22 41 we looked at the device and looked at what
00:55:46that device was doing at that time and it showed us that at the time the screenshot was taken he
00:55:50was on
00:55:51a face time with somebody and this is clearly a phone so you can see him like in the corner
00:55:56that's
00:55:58what's going on when we've got a download such as this where you can see that there's communications
00:56:04from mr striker to various other people about guns and screenshots of guns pictures of guns
00:56:12personally i've been through the phone and there's text messages about guns
00:56:15not recovering the gun whilst frustrating doesn't prohibit us now from demonstrating that he has
00:56:23involvement in firearms which will strengthen our case against him
00:56:27is someone from your vehicle get out of the vehicle and shoot out the house
00:56:32no comment or was the firearm discharged from inside the vehicle no comment
00:56:38the team have yet to recover the gun that was used in the shooting
00:56:43but the image in the phone call gives them a huge clue
00:56:48we don't know what our firearm in this incident is but it might be that weapon and
00:56:54to have him linked to a firearm which corresponds with what might have been used in this offense
00:57:00is obviously really powerful
00:57:03kieran atkins is the final suspect to be questioned
00:57:08detectives have cctv of him with the stolen audi but they still need more evidence before they can put
00:57:13the case to the cps my client wishes to put forward a statement i did not attempting to murder anyone
00:57:21we can now formally advise my clients to exercise the right silence to answer all the questions while
00:57:26using two words those two words being no comments in medical terminal cctv tracking has identified the
00:57:32defending vehicle to be a stolen audi sd quattro in gray
00:57:37but tell me where you were on the first of july we'll start there it was tuesday night two weeks

00:57:47no comment where was the audi taken to no comment is there anything else at all you can tell me
00:57:55in relation to the theft of the audi no comment
00:58:00deeper analysis of straker's phones has uncovered a new lead in the investigation into the stolen car
00:58:07in a case like this when we have been able to get into the phone it opens up a lot
00:58:11of opportunities
00:58:11for our investigation so clearly straker previously had possession of the s3 he's got messages on his
00:58:18phone straker is in communication with someone called k25 so i found out where my s3 is and i've
00:58:24still got a spare key so i'm going to go take it back but don't come over for nothing text
00:58:30messages
00:58:30confirm kyle straker was the previous owner of the audi and that he kept a second key after selling it
00:58:38on the day of the theft of the audi um straker he sends him a message saying yeah we need
00:58:42that car
00:58:43today bro back and forth messages for the around the theft of the vehicle for us this is huge because
00:58:48it shows that striker was organized and had this car stolen for hire further whatsapp calls uh k25
00:58:55because he can't help himself then sends a message of himself driving an audi drives down drives the audi
00:59:00down to the agreed drop-off point weaver's rise taxi back walsall street uh in comes a taxi
00:59:06out comes profile one there you go readily identifiable as kai everett who is dressed for
00:59:14attempted murder threats to kill going equipped so a man of violence as well kai everett is well known
00:59:20to police and has a number of serious offenses on his record kai everett is now suspect in this
00:59:27investigation we're satisfied at this time he's he's a person who actually stole the car
00:59:32and he needs to be arrested immediately the team track everett down to an address and the tactical
00:59:38support unit get a warrant for his arrest
00:59:44police
00:59:45please
00:59:46please
01:00:08Three men have been arrested on suspicion of attempted murder after a mother was shot in
01:00:13a drive-by attack at her home. She remains in hospital with life-changing injuries. Detectives
01:00:20believe they may have a crucial new lead in the theft of the vehicle used in the shooting.
01:00:25Great track suit, man bang over. You can see that it is the man who's stolen the Audi and the
01:00:30man who
01:00:30drops it at Weeb's rights. Kai Everett has been identified as the suspect in the Audi theft,
01:00:37and officers are now moving in to arrest him.
01:00:59Police! Police! Police! Police!
01:01:02Police! Police! Police! Police!
01:01:07You all right? Is it Kai? Kai? Hands out, mate.
01:01:12So you're under arrest, the theft of my vehicle on the grounds that a vehicle was stolen and
01:01:19then used in further offences.
01:01:22With Everett detained, the focus shifts back to the prime suspects in custody. Time is running
01:01:28out, but the investigation is far from over.
01:01:32So just check the timing, so this one started at 00? 0015.
01:01:38So we identify the Audi as a stolen vehicle that was stolen at Wensbury the day before,
01:01:45and it comes down from Wensbury, stays at Dudley, and then goes and commits the offence.
01:01:49Through our CCTV we've seen that it interacts before and after the offence with a BMW 330.
01:01:57That is a vehicle insured to an OCG member called Kyle Straker.
01:02:03We've obviously got more for Straker than we've got for Atkins and Colborne at this point in time.
01:02:07It's his BMW that's linked. Atkins and Colborne, we are dependent on phone work and interactions with Straker himself.
01:02:15My assessment of it would be we could do with a bit more if we're going to be charging those
01:02:19two,
01:02:20and we really need to try and find it.
01:02:25We have this six-minute gap just ever so slightly pre-offence between 23.56 and 00.06.
01:02:36That we've been trying to fill, and a consistent track for us there would be really, really helpful
01:02:41because it negates the ability for anybody to say, I've got out of the car.
01:02:46As Kyle Straker, Kieran Atkins and Ethan Colborne enter their final hours of custody,
01:02:52new evidence emerges about the Audi's movements in the minutes before the shooting.
01:02:58What happens here is the Audi pulls into petrol station, registration plate clearly displayed,
01:03:06same characteristics as our authentic vehicle, the headlights being out.
01:03:10What we've then got is Ethan Colborne starts to fuel up the car with petrol.
01:03:17And you see that we get that really good facial image that clearly identifies that person's clear and accurate.
01:03:24This petrol station confirms that there are at least three people in that vehicle.
01:03:29That therefore puts Kyle Straker as the driver for the offence.
01:03:33It puts Ethan Colborne and Kieran Atkins as the two passengers.
01:03:40For Major Crime Team 1, footage showing all three suspects in the Audi
01:03:45just 30 minutes before the shooting is a major turning point.
01:03:49We've got our offending vehicle on the forecourt of a garage showing the registration plates.
01:03:55For us this is absolutely huge because it puts them in that car very, very close to the offence.
01:04:02So there is no way now they can ever say, wasn't me, wasn't there, wasn't in the car.
01:04:09So it massively gives us so much evidence against them for this offence that we just didn't have before.
01:04:19We combine that with the evidence we've already got.
01:04:21And I think we're in position to charge these people.
01:04:24All right. Thank you, bye.
01:04:28I'd say two o'clock would be target time with that.
01:04:36Carl, you've been charged with the following three offences.
01:04:38You don't have to say anything that may harm your defence.
01:04:40If you do not mention now something which you'll later rely on in court,
01:04:42anything you do say may be given in evidence.
01:04:45Thank you very much. Bye.
01:04:50Charged with attempt murder.
01:04:52We've had the call from CPS and they're willing to charge all three with attempt murder and possession of a
01:04:58firearm.
01:04:59It's an absolute massive relief for us.
01:05:01Right. If you put car back in C29, please. Thank you.
01:05:05Oh, I'm so hurtful.
01:05:07Right, Ethan, on the 3rd of July this year at Dudley in the county of West Midlands,
01:05:11you attempted a murder. That's Contra Sections 1-1 of the Criminal Attempts Act of 1981.
01:05:16On the 3rd of July, you had in your possession a firearm with intent by means thereof to endanger life.
01:05:21And that's Contra Section 16 of and Schedule VI to the Firearms Act of 1968.
01:05:26Doing what we do, whilst it's absolutely fantastic to bring justice,
01:05:32looking at the victim herself, she was in her own home where she should feel safe with her children,
01:05:38and she was shot. And for the rest of her life, she's going to remember that.
