Major Crimes Unit Season 1 Episode 1
Transcript
00:00:00I don't know what to do.
00:00:53Seconds. That's all it takes for a brutal crime to be committed.
00:01:00My dad found his daughter on the floor in an absolute pool of blood.
00:01:04But no suspect disappears without a trace.
00:01:07One here, one here.
00:01:09A clue, a fragment, something is always left behind.
00:01:14It's just finding that inevitable mistake and making the most of it.
00:01:17Do you know anyone who would want to shoot you?
00:01:20In the West Midlands, the major crime team follows every lead.
00:01:25You can see the holes in the curtains just as the bullets have come through,
00:01:29and then we've got the damage in the coving.
00:01:32Specialist detectives trained to spot the most subtle of clues.
00:01:36It can be little things. You see what they were wearing,
00:01:39what kind of haircut they had on that day.
00:01:42Piecing together the truth.
00:01:44Oh, that's a good one.
00:01:46Liesin.
00:01:47And never giving up.
00:01:48Oh, please, show me your hands now!
00:01:50Show me your hands!
00:01:51Until those responsible are brought to justice.
00:01:56We've got to be there, dealing with it quickly.
00:02:01Our response will be as robust as the offence itself.
00:02:05Yes!
00:02:05Yes!
00:02:06Yes, yes, yes!
00:02:07Get in the car, mate!
00:02:09Get in the car!
00:02:12Get in the car!
00:02:36We need someone quick, man.
00:02:39I ain't having this kid die on this.
00:02:46Vehicle rocked up at the manor.
00:02:47It's got one person, critical condition,
00:02:50and there's damage to the windscreen.
00:02:52Possible gunshot.
00:02:53In Warsaw, five men arrive at the manor hospital
00:02:56in a silver VW Passat.
00:02:59One with gunshot wounds, the others beaten and stabbed.
00:03:03Right, listen to me here.
00:03:04Weapons in the back there, look.
00:03:06So, put some gloves on, close these doors for me.
00:03:17Across town, police speed to the scene
00:03:20after the victims report being attacked
00:03:23by a gang wielding machetes, bats and a gun.
00:03:29There's debris in the roads.
00:03:32Have you got another vehicle involved or anything?
00:03:35I don't know, mate.
00:03:38Confirmed discharge?
00:03:40I think he's got control to his arm.
00:03:44Multiple people are in hospital with life-threatening injuries.
00:03:48The priority is to preserve evidence
00:03:51and build a clearer picture of what happened.
00:03:54We've got that there, and then literally,
00:03:57right by where your boot is,
00:03:59that's the first drops of blood.
00:04:01That's the wing mirror from another car.
00:04:03That car's grey.
00:04:04That's both of those wing mirrors on.
00:04:06So, the other car is possibly going to have
00:04:07front-side damage
00:04:09and...
00:04:11Missing a wing mirror.
00:04:13It says inside Passat.
00:04:15I've got a baseball bat,
00:04:17flip knife,
00:04:17heavy blood-stained hammer.
00:04:19I'm really a seat.
00:04:21Yeah.
00:04:22What's the situation at the hospital?
00:04:24Carnage.
00:04:25By the centre.
00:04:31A major incident is declared
00:04:33as a medical team rushes to triage the victims.
00:04:36Do you know what his injuries are?
00:04:38Head injuries.
00:04:39They just wheeled him straight round.
00:04:40Have you been hit or...
00:04:41Like, bleeding?
00:04:42There's a hammer in the back of the car?
00:04:44Yes.
00:04:44I don't know.
00:04:46So, he's the first victim,
00:04:48and the victim's already gone to A&E
00:04:50with a head injury.
00:04:51Has he walked there himself?
00:04:52No, he can't be...
00:04:53..took you in a wheelchair
00:04:56and taken straight to A&E.
00:04:57He's heading...
00:04:58..weeding quite heavily.
00:04:59There's another gentleman there.
00:05:01He's got a stab wound,
00:05:03and I don't know what leg I think.
00:05:05Yeah, OK.
00:05:06You want to go?
00:05:07Yeah.
00:05:08Stay with the vehicle.
00:05:10You're going to pop this round.
00:05:11You're all right on me?
00:05:11It's OK.
00:05:12It's a nice shot.
00:05:13There's a rear passenger seat behind the drone.
00:05:15So, that's why he's been sat?
00:05:16Yeah.
00:05:18He's got quite a big lump in his arm
00:05:20on the opposite end,
00:05:20so there's no exit where you can feel
00:05:22like something solid.
00:05:24Do you know anyone
00:05:25who potentially would want to shoot you?
00:05:32Less than a mile away,
00:05:34back at the scene of the attack,
00:05:36police continue searching for evidence.
00:05:41And have you seen anything?
00:05:43Any of them got CCTV?
00:05:45CCTV.
00:05:46Have we smashed on these doors
00:05:47to see if we can wake anyone up?
00:05:53I'm going to record that.
00:05:55Is that all right?
00:05:55Yeah.
00:05:57What's up there?
00:05:59Somebody takes a car or something?
00:06:00Uh, I don't know.
00:06:03I don't know.
00:06:09That camera, if that one works,
00:06:11that would be perfect.
00:06:12That is facing...
00:06:13It's got three.
00:06:14There's two on the door
00:06:15and the one there,
00:06:16it's got everything.
00:06:24Due to the seriousness of the attack,
00:06:26Major Crime Team 1
00:06:27has taken charge of the investigation.
00:06:30From our perspective in Major Crime,
00:06:32when a gang-related incident
00:06:34involving weapons,
00:06:35serious violence takes place,
00:06:37we've got to be there
00:06:38dealing with it quickly.
00:06:39And it's now our responsibility
00:06:41to reassure the community
00:06:43that our response
00:06:45will be as robust
00:06:46as the offence itself.
00:06:48Rosie Downs,
00:06:49who heads up the CCTV team,
00:06:51is reviewing
00:06:52the first available footage.
00:06:54So,
00:06:5523 minutes past 11,
00:06:59got the victim's car
00:07:01parking up.
00:07:04So you start to see the headlights
00:07:05coming across
00:07:07and it's then that the
00:07:08two vehicles crash
00:07:10into the victim's car.
00:07:23So you can see here
00:07:24when the victim's
00:07:25trying desperately to get out,
00:07:26the car is trapped
00:07:29between the wall.
00:07:30So as he's trying to open the door,
00:07:34it's just not possible.
00:07:38As you can see here,
00:07:39multiple weapons.
00:07:44So a gunman is hiding
00:07:45in the shadows just here
00:07:47as he then comes round.
00:07:50He's masked up, hood up.
00:07:52It's going to be quite difficult
00:07:53to identify who that person is.
00:07:58So you can see,
00:07:59this is the gun.
00:08:00Looks like a pistol of some kind
00:08:03pointing into the back of the car.
00:08:07and the discharge happens.
00:08:13The screams that you can hear
00:08:15inside the car are
00:08:20horrible.
00:08:23Driver
00:08:24goes to start the car.
00:08:26Car doesn't start,
00:08:28probably from the impact
00:08:29of the crash
00:08:30into the victim's car.
00:08:34He gets out
00:08:37holding this weapon here.
00:08:39He then gets back in
00:08:41and for some reason
00:08:42he puts the weapon
00:08:43into the car
00:08:44and then runs away.
00:08:46That sheer panic of,
00:08:47right, the car doesn't start,
00:08:48what do we do?
00:08:50Potentially it's going
00:08:51through their mind that,
00:08:52right, we're going to have to
00:08:52run away on foot.
00:08:54I've got a weapon in my hand.
00:08:55I need to get rid of this weapon.
00:08:57And so that's potentially
00:08:58why they've left that
00:08:59in the vehicle.
00:09:00It's a crucial mistake.
00:09:05Detective Inspector
00:09:06Francis Nock
00:09:07will be leading the manhunt
00:09:08for those involved.
00:09:10The operation
00:09:11is called Cobblestone.
00:09:13This is by far
00:09:14the most
00:09:17actively involved
00:09:18firearm discharge
00:09:19that we've dealt with
00:09:20in terms of the fact
00:09:20you've got nine offenders
00:09:21in two vehicles,
00:09:22all of whom playing
00:09:23an active, destructive role
00:09:25in this job.
00:09:25So everybody's armed,
00:09:27everybody's got a role to play.
00:09:29The offence is extreme
00:09:31in its nature.
00:09:32The violence is
00:09:33of the highest possible level.
00:09:35Realistically,
00:09:36there's no bigger investigation
00:09:37that's going to come along
00:09:38in a major crime environment
00:09:39in terms of
00:09:40the numbers involved,
00:09:41the level of planning
00:09:42and the sheer severity
00:09:44and ferocity of the attack.
00:09:46But you can never make
00:09:47any assumptions
00:09:48as to the motive
00:09:49before you've got
00:09:50to the evidence.
00:09:51You can tell
00:09:52by the way
00:09:52the vehicles approached
00:09:53that it was
00:09:54a very planned attack
00:09:54which would make sure
00:09:56they were all trapped
00:09:56in the car.
00:09:57The weapons were such
00:09:58that certain weapons
00:09:59were designed
00:09:59to smash windows.
00:10:01Certain weapons
00:10:01were then designed
00:10:02to stab and slash
00:10:03into the car
00:10:04to cause as much damage
00:10:05as they possibly can.
00:10:06And this was all
00:10:07a softening up exercise
00:10:08for the gunman
00:10:09to then reveal himself
00:10:10and shoot into the car
00:10:11at point-blank range.
00:10:12We obviously see
00:10:14shooting stabbings
00:10:15you know
00:10:16quite often
00:10:17some of them
00:10:18often quite violent
00:10:19or shocking
00:10:21but I think
00:10:21even when probably
00:10:22all of us
00:10:23first watched that footage
00:10:24we were like
00:10:25well
00:10:26like
00:10:26that's unbelievable
00:10:28that obviously
00:10:29nine of them
00:10:30have done that
00:10:30to five individuals
00:10:32in the car.
00:10:33They could have died.
00:10:35I agree.
00:10:36What's happened
00:10:37in this job
00:10:39is a group
00:10:40that thinks
00:10:40they're absolutely
00:10:41untouchable
00:10:41thinks they can do
00:10:42whatever they like
00:10:43on a public street
00:10:44clearly thinks
00:10:45the police
00:10:45aren't going to catch them
00:10:46clearly thinks
00:10:47that they are
00:10:47way above and beyond
00:10:49the law
00:10:49and I think
00:10:50this is probably
00:10:51a representation
00:10:53of a group
00:10:53that's been
00:10:54committing acts
00:10:55of violence
00:10:55for a long time
00:10:57and potentially
00:10:57getting away with it
00:10:58to the point
00:10:58where they've done this.
00:11:06With multiple attackers
00:11:08involved in what looks
00:11:09like a carefully
00:11:10coordinated ambush
00:11:11Major Crime Team 1
00:11:12now faces the challenge
00:11:14of identifying
00:11:15and locating
00:11:15all the gang members
00:11:17before they strike again.
00:11:19Time's ticking
00:11:20right from the start.
00:11:22We've got to identify
00:11:22those people
00:11:23who have committed
00:11:24that offence
00:11:24and bring them
00:11:25to justice quickly.
00:11:27At this stage
00:11:28their identities
00:11:28are all disguised
00:11:29they're all wearing
00:11:30dark clothing.
00:11:31It's not immediately
00:11:33obvious
00:11:34who's who
00:11:35it is
00:11:36a challenge
00:11:37the scope
00:11:38of which I've
00:11:38never faced before.
00:11:40It puts you
00:11:41under pressure.
00:11:51Major Crime Team 1
00:11:52are searching
00:11:53for a gang
00:11:53responsible
00:11:54for a brutal attack
00:11:55in Walsall
00:11:56that left four men
00:11:57seriously injured
00:11:58and another
00:11:58in a coma
00:11:59fighting for his life.
00:12:10new evidence
00:12:11suggests the ambush
00:12:12was a retaliation
00:12:14over drugs territory
00:12:15and now
00:12:16Major Crime Team 1
00:12:17fear reprisals
00:12:18and a wider
00:12:19drugs war.
00:12:22Across the West Midlands
00:12:23the underground drugs
00:12:24economy is worth
00:12:259.4 million pounds
00:12:27every year.
00:12:29Street dealers
00:12:30can flip a kilo
00:12:31of heroin
00:12:31or cocaine
00:12:32bought for around
00:12:3325,000 pounds
00:12:34into 100,000 pounds
00:12:36making it
00:12:38extremely profitable.
00:12:39The reason why
00:12:40the gangs feud
00:12:41is normally drugs
00:12:42and the money
00:12:43that comes from
00:12:44drug dealing.
00:12:46Violence often erupts
00:12:48when one drugs gang
00:12:49tries to muscle in
00:12:50on another's patch.
00:12:52In some areas
00:12:53you've got gangs
00:12:54who are very
00:12:55postcode based.
00:12:56Some of these gangs
00:12:57are fighting each other
00:12:58for territory.
00:13:00We have to be
00:13:01on top of our game
00:13:02all the time
00:13:02to try and keep
00:13:03on top of it.
00:13:04Show me your hands
00:13:05man!
00:13:06Show me your hands!
00:13:07Show me your hands!
00:13:08Show me your hands!
00:13:12With the threat
00:13:13of further violence
00:13:14looming
00:13:14Francis and his team
00:13:16are under increasing
00:13:17pressure to solve
00:13:18the case quickly.
00:13:20You know
00:13:20the CCTV speaks
00:13:21for itself
00:13:21in terms of the
00:13:22ferocity
00:13:23and sustained nature
00:13:24of the attack.
00:13:25You know
00:13:25as soon as you see
00:13:26that kind of job
00:13:26you understand
00:13:27the importance
00:13:28of solving it
00:13:29you understand
00:13:29the importance
00:13:29of identifying
00:13:30this group
00:13:31that's involved.
00:13:33Francis and his
00:13:33colleague
00:13:34DC Kosh Shourish
00:13:35want to understand
00:13:37more about
00:13:37what took place
00:13:38so are making
00:13:39their way to the
00:13:40scene to walk
00:13:41through the events.
00:13:42We're basically
00:13:42driving the route
00:13:43now that the
00:13:44offending vehicles
00:13:45took into the
00:13:46offence.
00:13:46They knew
00:13:47where the victims
00:13:47were.
00:13:50They knew
00:13:50how they were
00:13:51going to arrange
00:13:51the attack cars
00:13:52how they were
00:13:53going to smash
00:13:53into them
00:13:54and what they
00:13:54were going to
00:13:54do when they
00:13:54got there.
00:13:58They are
00:13:58particularly
00:13:59focused on
00:14:00the chaotic
00:14:00moments
00:14:01during the
00:14:01attack.
00:14:03So this is
00:14:04the scene
00:14:04of the incident.
00:14:06What we have
00:14:07here is
00:14:08the victim's
00:14:09vehicle
00:14:09is parked
00:14:10here on the
00:14:11double yellow
00:14:11lines.
00:14:14Just in between
00:14:15these two cameras
00:14:16here.
00:14:18What we then
00:14:19see on CCTV
00:14:20is two vehicles
00:14:22which both
00:14:23ram it.
00:14:24first vehicle
00:14:25approaches
00:14:25from this
00:14:27sort of
00:14:28bank over
00:14:28here.
00:14:30And the
00:14:31second vehicle
00:14:32approaches
00:14:33from the
00:14:33front.
00:14:38Two of them
00:14:38leave on
00:14:39foot.
00:14:39Yeah.
00:14:40And from
00:14:41CCTV we can
00:14:42tell that
00:14:42they've sort
00:14:42taken a ride
00:14:43here and
00:14:45they ran
00:14:45down here.
00:14:48And this is
00:14:49in their
00:14:49kind of panic
00:14:50having totaled
00:14:51the vehicle.
00:14:52So we've got
00:14:53the profile
00:14:54wearing the
00:14:54shorts who
00:14:55just stands
00:14:55on this
00:14:56corner here.
00:14:57And of course
00:14:58that second
00:14:58profile who
00:15:00runs down
00:15:00this road
00:15:00there.
00:15:02While
00:15:03Francis and
00:15:04Kosh examine
00:15:04the crime
00:15:05scene,
00:15:05Rosie and
00:15:06her colleague
00:15:06Indi Basra
00:15:07track the
00:15:08suspect's route
00:15:09as they flee
00:15:10on foot.
00:15:11So we've
00:15:11got this
00:15:12camera that
00:15:13points here
00:15:13and this
00:15:14camera that
00:15:14points in
00:15:15here.
00:15:16And it's
00:15:16from both
00:15:17cameras that
00:15:17we start to
00:15:18get a good
00:15:19facial image
00:15:20of him.
00:15:21And it's
00:15:22from this
00:15:22camera that
00:15:23captures him
00:15:24shouting to
00:15:26the car that
00:15:27actually would
00:15:28capture that
00:15:28really good
00:15:29facial image.
00:15:31Yeah, so he
00:15:31gets into the
00:15:32back of the
00:15:32car and
00:15:33obviously at
00:15:33that point
00:15:34there's nine
00:15:34people in
00:15:34that car.
00:15:35He's the
00:15:35ninth person
00:15:36getting in
00:15:36there.
00:15:38And you can
00:15:39actually see the
00:15:40struggle caught
00:15:40on the camera.
00:15:41You can see
00:15:42that the car
00:15:43is really busy
00:15:44and they
00:15:44struggle to
00:15:45shut the
00:15:45door behind
00:15:45him.
00:15:47You know,
00:15:47he's just
00:15:48run, he's
00:15:48breathing heavy,
00:15:49maybe he needs
00:15:50the covering
00:15:51off his nose
00:15:52and mouth.
00:15:52Difficult to
00:15:53say, but
00:15:53either way,
00:15:54very good that
00:15:55he's done it
00:15:56because it
00:15:57gives us a
00:15:57facial image
00:15:57to work from,
00:15:58albeit it's
00:15:59blurry.
00:16:00Once we know
00:16:01who we're
00:16:01looking at,
00:16:02that's going to
00:16:03assist us
00:16:03without a
00:16:04shadow of a
00:16:04doubt.
00:16:06Despite
00:16:07capturing the
00:16:07first clear
00:16:08image of a
00:16:08suspect, the
00:16:09investigation team
00:16:11faces a major
00:16:12problem.
00:16:14Footage of the
00:16:15incident has
00:16:16leaked online.
00:16:20I would say
00:16:21the public
00:16:21reaction to
00:16:22this gives
00:16:23us a level
00:16:24of pressure
00:16:24that we
00:16:24hadn't previously
00:16:25seen.
00:16:26You've got
00:16:27an offence
00:16:28which is a
00:16:29really significant
00:16:30offence anyway
00:16:32and there's a
00:16:33level of panic
00:16:36and uncertainty
00:16:37in the community
00:16:38that we really
00:16:39haven't seen
00:16:40before.
00:16:47Across the
00:16:48West Midlands,
00:16:48criminal gangs
00:16:49are locked in
00:16:50a battle for
00:16:51control over
00:16:51the most
00:16:52lucrative
00:16:52territories.
00:16:54Expanding
00:16:55beyond cities
00:16:55like Birmingham,
00:16:56they push
00:16:57their operations
00:16:57into smaller
00:16:58towns and
00:16:59rural communities
00:17:00to maximize
00:17:01profit.
00:17:05Using dedicated
00:17:06phone numbers,
00:17:07gangs send
00:17:08street dealers
00:17:09to supply crack
00:17:10cocaine and
00:17:10heroin, a
00:17:11system known
00:17:12as county
00:17:13lines.
00:17:14As they
00:17:14expand, gangs
00:17:16move in on
00:17:17rival patches
00:17:17using intimidation
00:17:19and extreme
00:17:19violence to
00:17:20seize control
00:17:21of the customer
00:17:22base.
00:17:23And with nearly
00:17:24400 active
00:17:25drugs lines in
00:17:26the West Midlands
00:17:26at any one
00:17:27time, police are
00:17:29under intense
00:17:29pressure to crack
00:17:30down on street
00:17:31dealers and curb
00:17:32the violence.
00:17:42drug dealer.
00:17:43A known drug
00:17:43dealer was stabbed
00:17:44on the 17th of
00:17:45March, was
00:17:46life-threatening.
00:17:47There have been
00:17:47several retaliatory
00:17:48attacks in relation
00:17:49to his stabbing.
00:17:50Detective Sergeant
00:17:52Gavin McGrath is
00:17:53part of the county
00:17:54lines task force,
00:17:55hunting the street
00:17:56dealers who flood
00:17:57neighbourhoods with
00:17:58drugs and violence.
00:18:00Drug dealing is a
00:18:01violent trade.
00:18:02It's competitive.
00:18:03They all want a
00:18:03slice of the pie.
00:18:04If another group
00:18:05comes in, that can
00:18:06cause tensions
00:18:07between the groups
00:18:08and it is common
00:18:09for violence to
00:18:10occur in certain
00:18:11territories.
00:18:12So, Bromford Lane,
00:18:13Tyburn and Bromford.
00:18:14Yeah, right.
00:18:14So, the junction
00:18:15at Tyburn and
00:18:16Bromford, just north
00:18:17of it, we were on
00:18:19a policing operation
00:18:19about two to three
00:18:20weeks ago.
00:18:21It was just a
00:18:21constant flurry of
00:18:22drug users turning
00:18:23up, waiting for
00:18:23deals.
00:18:24So, we think that's
00:18:25a regular location
00:18:26people will come to.
00:18:27So, when you're
00:18:27out and about, please
00:18:28have a peer.
00:18:29If you see people
00:18:29going and getting
00:18:30around, but it
00:18:30was like shooting
00:18:31fish in a barrel,
00:18:32wasn't it?
00:18:32There were so many
00:18:32people turning up.
00:18:33Right, the time
00:18:34is now six o'clock.
00:18:36Can you all be
00:18:36kitted and ready
00:18:37to go by
00:18:38quarter past
00:18:39no later, please?
00:18:43The task force
00:18:44is set up to deal
00:18:46with county drug
00:18:47lines that sell
00:18:47heroin and crack
00:18:48cocaine.
00:18:49The link between
00:18:50drug dealing in
00:18:51respect of that
00:18:51class of drugs and
00:18:52violence is
00:18:53particularly high.
00:18:54So, that is our
00:18:55remit.
00:18:58We effectively
00:18:59play whack-a-mole.
00:19:00We're constantly
00:19:00up against new
00:19:01dealers all the
00:19:02time.
00:19:02So, when we
00:19:03conclude an
00:19:03operation, it's
00:19:05pretty quickly.
00:19:06We get another one
00:19:07referred in to us
00:19:08to have a look at.
00:19:09But we cover the
00:19:10whole fort area, so
00:19:11that could take us
00:19:11anywhere, all the
00:19:12Hampton, Coventry,
00:19:13into other fort areas.
00:19:15But Erdington is a
00:19:16priority for us at the
00:19:17moment.
00:19:18Gavin and his team
00:19:19have uncovered a
00:19:20major drugs network
00:19:22supplying crack
00:19:23cocaine and heroin
00:19:24to Erdington, a
00:19:26suburb five miles
00:19:27outside Birmingham
00:19:28with around 20,000
00:19:29residents.
00:19:30Erdington itself
00:19:32is a busy
00:19:33urbanised area.
00:19:35There's a big
00:19:35user base there
00:19:36for drug dealers
00:19:38to tap into.
00:19:40There's a lot of
00:19:40vehicle failing to
00:19:41stop, grab any
00:19:42cords, uh,
00:19:43on to a course now.
00:19:46Having identified
00:19:47a suspected drug
00:19:48dealer, Gavin and
00:19:50his team move in
00:19:51to make an arrest.
00:20:00We've got a pharmacy
00:20:01here.
00:20:02Let's have a look.
00:20:04Yeah, that's
00:20:05mushrooms.
00:20:08So, that'll be,
00:20:10let's have a look
00:20:10like that.
00:20:11But that's, I don't
00:20:11think that's crack.
00:20:13That's what,
00:20:13potentially meth,
00:20:14that was.
00:20:15Oh, wow.
00:20:16We've got MDMA.
00:20:17That's, that'll be
00:20:18coke.
00:20:20That's resin.
00:20:21Yeah, so it,
00:20:22yeah, if we bag that
00:20:22up, mate, yeah.
00:20:24Made a tidy profit
00:20:25today, pal.
00:20:29That's not kind of it,
00:20:30that's spice, that is,
00:20:31I think.
00:20:31Oh, yeah?
00:20:32Yeah.
00:20:32Yeah, so.
00:20:36It might be,
00:20:37it might be,
00:20:37it's finely ground.
00:20:38Normally, when it
00:20:39looks like that,
00:20:39that's spice,
00:20:40so I'd bag that
00:20:41separately, because I
00:20:42think that's going to
00:20:42be spice, mate.
00:20:45We'll take his
00:20:46phone, um, he's got
00:20:4923%, so I'll get that
00:20:50backed up and prepped.
00:20:51We'll take that with
00:20:51us, and we'll, we'll
00:20:52collect you from
00:20:53wherever you may be.
00:20:55The suspect, believed
00:20:56to be part of an
00:20:57Albanian drugs gang, is
00:20:59arrested on suspicion of
00:21:00possession with intent
00:21:01to supply, and will be
00:21:03taken into custody for
00:21:04further questioning.
00:21:06County lines, yeah,
00:21:07PIC from Erdinsson for,
00:21:09uh, possession of intent
00:21:10to supply.
00:21:21A county line is a
00:21:23telephone number that
00:21:24has been set up in
00:21:25order to facilitate the
00:21:26supply of drugs.
00:21:28They're running all over
00:21:30the country, supplying
00:21:31drugs into various areas
00:21:32of the UK.
00:21:34So what we chase is the
00:21:35telephone number, who is
00:21:37controlling it, and when
00:21:39we do our enquiries, the
00:21:40suspects then emerge.
00:21:43And that's where the
00:21:44investigation starts.
00:21:58Major crime team one are
00:22:00leading the investigation
00:22:01into a shocking and
00:22:02violent ambush in Warsaw,
00:22:04where a gang targeted
00:22:05their rivals in an alleged
00:22:07dispute over drugs
00:22:08territory.
00:22:12four of the victims have
00:22:13serious injuries, and the
00:22:15other is in a coma.
00:22:16DI Francis Nock leads the
00:22:18hunt for those responsible,
00:22:20as the leaked footage online
00:22:21threatens to undermine the
00:22:23investigation.
00:22:26With the CCTV being on
00:22:27social media, there's an
00:22:29added pressure for us to
00:22:30get a result.
00:22:31But also, there's a lot of
00:22:32people in the community who
00:22:33want to help us, who want to
00:22:34give us information, who
00:22:36don't want this sort of
00:22:37violence on their street.
00:22:41So what we've ended up
00:22:42with is a huge volume of
00:22:45names presented as possible
00:22:46offenders that we now need
00:22:47to work through.
00:22:52With the threat of a full-blown
00:22:54drugs war looming,
00:22:55detectives are in a race
00:22:57against time to solve the
00:22:58case before the violence
00:23:00escalates.
00:23:0127 people named as
00:23:03responsible for a job that
00:23:05only nine people did.
00:23:06What's the veracity of all
00:23:07that intelligence?
00:23:08Where are the nine
00:23:09responsible hiding within
00:23:10that 27, even if they are
00:23:12included at all?
00:23:13At this point in time,
00:23:14there's a lot of work to
00:23:15do.
00:23:15It's been a massive
00:23:16challenge for us.
00:23:18I'm now responsible for the
00:23:20investigation of upwards of
00:23:2120 individuals to try and
00:23:23narrow down who's actually
00:23:24responsible for this.
00:23:25I'm hoping some of the names
00:23:27are in there who have
00:23:28actually done it.
00:23:28But at this stage, we
00:23:30don't know if they're
00:23:31involved.
00:23:34While Francis and Kosh
00:23:36now have several suspects
00:23:38to pursue, Rosie uncovers
00:23:40further footage of the
00:23:41attackers fleeing the scene.
00:23:45Post-defense, we've trapped
00:23:46the car now to its end
00:23:48point.
00:23:49So this is the car coming
00:23:51away from Reeswood Lane.
00:23:53So then we've got nine away
00:23:54on foot.
00:23:55So this camera...
00:23:58One.
00:24:02Two, three, four, five.
00:24:07Six, seven, eight, nine.
00:24:09All in line.
00:24:10All holding weapons.
00:24:12Detectives have tracked the
00:24:14nine suspects further.
00:24:15And new footage from a few
00:24:17streets away from the attack
00:24:19could be key to identifying
00:24:21those responsible.
00:24:22And then this is the Bentley
00:24:23Moore Club where our two getaway
00:24:25vehicles are parked.
00:24:27So obviously the quality of the
00:24:28footage here isn't great.
00:24:31But I do have a little bit of
00:24:34clothing from the scene to work
00:24:36with.
00:24:37So some of them here, I mean,
00:24:39one's wearing shorts.
00:24:41There's only one person at the
00:24:42actual offense wearing shorts.
00:24:44It's got dark-colored trousers here
00:24:47with the light-colored markings.
00:24:48So we need to do a bit of work
00:24:50now to identify which profiles
00:24:52these are so we can then put them
00:24:55into whichever car.
00:25:04CCTV reveals the gang meeting in the
00:25:07car park of the Bentley Moore
00:25:08Social Club, both before and
00:25:11after the attack.
00:25:12So Francis and Kosh head there to
00:25:14investigate further.
00:25:15Coming up here on the left is the
00:25:18Bentley Moore Social Club.
00:25:23So it was this camera, wasn't it,
00:25:25that captured the main footage of
00:25:28what we could see, which was
00:25:30fortunate, wasn't it, because they
00:25:31park kind of here, almost in front
00:25:34of it.
00:25:35As well as CCTV footage, a major
00:25:38piece of evidence has also been
00:25:40recovered from the scene.
00:25:46What they found was a machete
00:25:48discarded in the bushes here,
00:25:52which was blood-stained.
00:25:55So probably as they got back, back
00:25:57out of the attack vehicles and into
00:25:59the getaway cars, you know, they're
00:26:00handling a lot of weapons, a lot of
00:26:01machetes, bats, they've got a fire
00:26:03arm to worry about.
00:26:04And some mistakes were made.
00:26:06The discarded machete could be
00:26:08crucial.
00:26:09Once suspects are identified,
00:26:11DNA and fingerprints may link them
00:26:13directly to the attack.
00:26:15Investigations where criminals make
00:26:16absolutely no mistakes are incredibly
00:26:19difficult or impossible to solve.
00:26:21So it's just sometimes about finding
00:26:23that inevitable mistake and making
00:26:25the most of it.
00:26:32So the Bentley Moore Club footage gives
00:26:34us so much in terms of the
00:26:37organisation of the offence.
00:26:41We know they're going to be meeting
00:26:43somewhere and that place is the
00:26:45Bentley Moore Club.
00:26:45It gives us vehicles and gives us a
00:26:48start and an end point for all of our
00:26:50different suspects.
00:26:51And it really sets the tone for the
00:26:54investigation in terms of where we go from
00:26:55there.
00:27:02Drugs are the lifeblood of organised crime, the revenue stream
00:27:06that keeps the gangs in business.
00:27:09Lots of people may see drug users walking around in their local
00:27:12streets, but not actually understand the whole dark secret
00:27:15economy behind it.
00:27:17The street dealers are on the front line.
00:27:20If you have a drug line, you're involved in organised crime.
00:27:24Drug building is their core revenue stream.
00:27:26The cash they collect doesn't stay on street corners.
00:27:29It flows up the chain to the gangs pulling the strings.
00:27:33There's always some kind of hierarchy.
00:27:36Essentially, there's nothing the gangs won't do to make money.
00:27:39Profits buy the next shipment of drugs, weapons and bankrolls
00:27:44violence.
00:27:44Often knives, machetes, firearms are used, creating a whole other
00:27:49set of problems for the police to investigate and the wider
00:27:51community.
00:27:53So when police shut down a drugs line, they're not just making
00:27:57arrests.
00:27:59They're cutting off the cash that keeps organised crime alive
00:28:03across the UK.
00:28:08Investigations into the county line's operations have taken a
00:28:11significant step forward.
00:28:13West Midland's gang unit are executing a raid on a house
00:28:16they suspect is a base for drug dealing.
00:28:20Police! Police! Don't do it!
00:28:23Police!
00:28:24Do you not move?
00:28:25Show me your hands!
00:28:26Show me your hands!
00:28:27You're not allowed, bro.
00:28:28Come out.
00:28:30What the fuck happened?
00:28:39What the fuck?
00:28:55The raid proves to be a major development for the KP drugs line
00:28:59investigation and Gavin updates his head of department, DI Mark
00:29:03Robinson.
00:29:04When they attended that property, the occupant was a male suffering
00:29:08from cancer and he's quite ill.
00:29:10And there was also another female in there who's since deceased.
00:29:14Cuckooing is a situation where drug dealers identify a vulnerable person, come in and either be
00:29:21befriend someone or use coercion or violence to take over their home address and use that
00:29:26as a base.
00:29:28And there were two other males present.
00:29:30One of them was Lewis Simpson.
00:29:32He's had to be pinned down, hasn't he, upon entry.
00:29:34So he's been detained.
00:29:36The other male was Connor Burns.
00:29:37Connor Burns was found in the bedroom where a large number of wraps of heroin and crack cocaine
00:29:42were wrapped up in some cling film.
00:29:49One of the iPhones that Lewis Simpson had in his possession was the KP drugs line, 5624.
00:29:56So that positively links in with that and we've also got a really good drugs recovery.
00:30:00The lab have tested those drugs and they've confirmed their heroin and crack cocaine.
00:30:03So that's where we are with that.
00:30:05So that's where those two start to come under our focus.
00:30:16There's also been a phone recovered, which is believed to be an active drug line.
00:30:21Although there are drugs at the address and police seize phones, 24-year-old Lewis Simpson
00:30:27and 23-year-old Connor Burns are released on bail with conditions not to contact each other.
00:30:33At the time of that arrest, Lewis and Connor were not connected to our lives.
00:30:38However, once they get arrested, we made a link with them and the KP drugs line that we were dealing
00:30:44with.
00:30:47That number had went permanently down. It never reactivated.
00:30:51They had simply started up a new telephone number shortly after they had come out of custody.
00:30:59So once 5624 drops, 1466 starts shortly after.
00:31:05And we've identified that to be a continuation of the KP drugs line.
00:31:09It's been a bit of a difficult job, really.
00:31:11It's been quite convoluted, quite complicated around how the suspects are operating.
00:31:16Once they get arrested, they don't then hang everything up and walk away from it.
00:31:21Lewis and Connor, the way they operate, it was very good and very difficult to get on top of.
00:31:26And I think they'd been operating this way for some time, hence why they had not been picked up on
00:31:31sooner.
00:31:32They may be able to run for a little while, but they can't do it forever.
00:31:45Major Crime Team 1 are investigating a violent ambush in Warsaw,
00:31:50where one gang allegedly attacked another in a fight over drugs territory.
00:31:54Leaked footage of the incident fuels the pressure,
00:31:57as 27 names are given to investigators by the public.
00:32:01Now, fearing reprisals and a wider drugs war, D.I. Francis Nock makes a crucial decision.
00:32:08So working through the names we've had,
00:32:10I've picked on some names who have been presented by intelligence a few times.
00:32:16We really can't wait in an instance like this.
00:32:19There's too much risk and there's too much evidence to be lost.
00:32:21We need to strike, and we need to strike against the people who I believe at this time are most
00:32:25likely to be involved.
00:32:27A raid is launched, and eight armed response officers move in on a flat in Warsaw,
00:32:32where two of the gang's attackers may be hiding.
00:32:39Oh, please!
00:32:40I'm push number three!
00:32:42Come to the front door with nothing in your hands!
00:32:47Catch your hands.
00:32:48Open the door, mate. Open the door, lights are steady.
00:32:51It's all right.
00:32:52That's it. Come towards me, mate. Come towards me.
00:32:55How many people have you got in this flat, mate?
00:32:56Just two people.
00:32:58Face them all there. For us, you face the wall as well, mate.
00:33:01Yeah.
00:33:03The purpose of arresting them quickly is to get our hands on them, search premises, seize items,
00:33:10and investigate their whereabouts and their involvement to really understand whether these are members of the attacking group or not.
00:33:19When we searched that flat, we recovered drugs and we recovered phones, so there's evidence there of criminality.
00:33:29The team make two arrests.
00:33:32Amar Shehzad and Hezer Ayaz.
00:33:36And also sees large quantities of Class A drugs.
00:33:40However, a new problem has emerged.
00:33:43Amar Shehzad and Hezer Ayaz, their phones do not go to the offence location.
00:33:49At this stage, it doesn't put them at the scene, and that's what we're trying to do.
00:33:52And therefore, they've been released on bail with conditions while we continue to investigate the case.
00:33:58But that's just the nature of this kind of investigation.
00:34:00When things are this organised and there's this many people involved, there's going to be stumbling blocks for you all
00:34:04over the place.
00:34:10It's a setback for the team, but now Rosie has a breakthrough.
00:34:14She's tracked one of the cars seen outside the Bentley Moore Social Club before the attack.
00:34:20We identified this vehicle dropping two people off at Bentley Moore Club.
00:34:27So, using CCTV and tracking that vehicle back, we were able to identify the registration plate of that vehicle.
00:34:34From there, we were able to identify a financial transaction that takes place at the BP garage in West Brom.
00:34:42So, what we have here is this vehicle present with the registration plate, confirmed from CCTV as being our vehicle.
00:34:52And here we have the offender filling up petrol of that car.
00:34:56This is kind of the best image that we had.
00:34:59So, from this alone, the shorts stand out to me.
00:35:05So, this light-coloured marking that I see just here.
00:35:15The offender that runs away on foot away from the scene and gets into the car, he's wearing similar shorts
00:35:23to that.
00:35:23So, you've got the kind of dark shorts with a light-coloured mark on the left-hand side.
00:35:29And the fact that he's filling up this vehicle shows us that this is highly likely to be one of
00:35:37the offenders involved in the incident.
00:35:39The evidence is key in helping identify the name of the suspect, Mohammed Sajid.
00:35:47And now, his name has been circulated to police forces across the country.
00:35:54The following morning, we got an alert from the airport police that Mohammed Sajid was planning to fly abroad to
00:36:01Lahore in Pakistan.
00:36:02Our inquiries have shown that he booked this flight four hours before it was due to take off.
00:36:07It shows that he's panicking.
00:36:08It shows that he's trying to flee the country.
00:36:14But before he can escape, police intercepts Sajid in the departure lounge at Birmingham Airport.
00:36:29What's your offense, please?
00:36:30Attempt murder.
00:36:31What's your last name?
00:36:33Sajid.
00:36:34Is that your first name or your last name?
00:36:35Last name.
00:36:36S-A-J-I-D.
00:36:37What?
00:36:39First name?
00:36:39Mohammed.
00:36:40I'm at Birmingham Airport.
00:36:46Departures.
00:36:47Hmm?
00:36:47Departures at Birmingham Airport.
00:36:52Detectives hope that by questioning Sajid, he will lead them to known associates and potentially new suspects.
00:37:01Are you part of a gang?
00:37:03No comment.
00:37:04Do you get involved in gang activity?
00:37:06No comment.
00:37:08As inquiries with Sajid get started, another vehicle leaving the Bentley Moore Social Club has emerged as a new focus
00:37:16of the investigation.
00:37:17We had a BMW coming away from the Bentley Moore Club.
00:37:22So once we started tracking that vehicle to try and identify it, that was a vehicle linked to Amar Khan.
00:37:32So again, once we started looking at his financial transactions throughout the day of the offense, that provided us with
00:37:41CCTV footage of his clothing and his connection with Mohammed Sajid the day of the offense.
00:37:52It was actually from here that we were able to track them.
00:37:59It appears from the evidence that Amar Khan is actually the leader of this group.
00:38:03So we see him earlier on in the day positioning vehicles that we know are subsequently used in the attack
00:38:09or to get away from the attack.
00:38:11He collects and delivers a number of other offenders to the Bentley Moore Club.
00:38:15And then when you see the CCTV and you hear from the witnesses in the car actually at the scene,
00:38:21he's directing weapons.
00:38:22He's in possession of multiple weapons.
00:38:24And it even appears he calls in the shooter to get the gun.
00:38:27So it appears that Amar Khan's in control.
00:38:34But within days of the offense, Amar Khan fled the country.
00:38:38He did so using a false passport and his destination is unknown.
00:38:42So finding him is going to be a huge challenge.
00:38:54Just confirm, slide row.
00:38:56OK, yeah. Pursuit is authorized.
00:39:00While Major Crime Team 1 continues to hunt those behind drugs-related violence,
00:39:05the County Lines Task Force focuses on the funding by targeting the KP drugs line.
00:39:12These are officers that are on General Patrol.
00:39:14They don't know we're carrying out a drugs operation in respect to the KP drugs line.
00:39:18And they've seen what they perceive to be a drug user get in the back of this car.
00:39:22It looks like they've seen the officers and they've reacted to their presence, so they've driven off.
00:39:28It was apparent to me that the reason for the delay from the point they're asked to pull over
00:39:33to the point that they do pull over is because they're concealing drugs,
00:39:36they're turning off the drugs line, they're trying to get ready for that stop.
00:39:40To minimise the risk of them being arrested.
00:39:43Vehicle stopped outside 384 Station Road.
00:39:45Keep your hands where I can see them.
00:39:47Keep your hands where I can see them.
00:39:49Right, you're detained for Section 23 Missions of Drugs Act Search.
00:39:52Sergeant from the Guardian Task Force, Bourneville Police Station.
00:39:55There is a male in the back.
00:39:57He's quite clearly a drug user.
00:40:00He doesn't share any ties with these two boys.
00:40:03Nor was I, mate. I'm a fucking adult, bro.
00:40:04The driver of that car was Connor Burns.
00:40:10This is our first sort of indication with Ryan Bowen.
00:40:13So this is Ryan Bowen, who's also a suspect.
00:40:17The red Apple iPhone picked up by the officers in that stop is the KP Drug Align.
00:40:23You got it.
00:40:23You got it.
00:40:24These two were taken in for a strip search.
00:40:26They've been taken in before.
00:40:27No wraps are being found.
00:40:31It's quite clear that drugs are being swallowed or they're being concealed internally,
00:40:35hence why no arrests are happening, hence why police aren't seizing the drugs.
00:40:39Stay there.
00:40:40So we've had to go into a bit of deeper dive about what the drugs line was doing.
00:40:45Well, buddy, if you step out for me then.
00:40:49At 10.15, the KP Drug's Line suddenly stopped its normal, usual activity,
00:40:55coinciding with that encounter with the police.
00:40:59A strip search has been authorized.
00:41:00They get detained by the police for some time.
00:41:03And for a whole hour, that phone is no longer in use.
00:41:08The KP Drug's Line had turned back on at 11.16,
00:41:10and that coincided with Connor Burns and Ryan Bowen
00:41:14being released by the police from that drug search.
00:41:18Sorry, Dave.
00:41:19As soon as they're released, they have turned that phone back on
00:41:22and gone back out to supply drugs.
00:41:26Whilst we can say something to the Drug's Line,
00:41:28we've got to prove they sell heroin,
00:41:30we've got to prove they sell crack.
00:41:31This is a complicated case,
00:41:33because the group themselves are quite disciplined.
00:41:36They've got the drugs line with them.
00:41:37But whenever they're getting stopped, they've got no drugs.
00:41:40So the questions would arise.
00:41:41Well, if you think they're drug dealing,
00:41:43why aren't you finding drugs?
00:41:53While Gavin focuses on how the drugs are funded,
00:41:56Major Crime Team 1 continues to investigate
00:41:59the Warsaw attack,
00:42:01where one gang allegedly targeted another over drug territory.
00:42:07Amr Shehzad and Hezer Ayaz were first to be arrested,
00:42:11but both were released due to a lack of evidence.
00:42:15Muhammad Sajid remains under questioning,
00:42:17while suspected ringleader Amr Khan has fled the country.
00:42:23But now one of the victims has woken from a coma
00:42:26and provided more information.
00:42:29So he was sat in the driver's seat initially,
00:42:33and then when the vehicle is rammed,
00:42:37as he's getting attacked,
00:42:39he sort of goes to the back of the vehicle for safety,
00:42:43and then crouches in between the back seat wells.
00:42:52They spent some time in hospital because of his injuries.
00:42:55They were quite serious.
00:42:58We interviewed him.
00:43:00He provided a very detailed account of the incident
00:43:04and what he went through.
00:43:08He explained that he recognised some of the suspects,
00:43:13well, recognised their voices,
00:43:15because they all had face masks on, etc.
00:43:18He said, he remembers one of them shouting the name Monkey Amr.
00:43:27And then he remembers another one saying,
00:43:30it's me, Hezer.
00:43:34And he recognises both boys and both people
00:43:37as Amr Shehzad and Hezer Ayaz.
00:43:42With one of the victims identifying Amr Shehzad
00:43:45and Hezer Ayaz at the scene,
00:43:48police have fresh grounds to re-arrest them.
00:43:57Hello, Miss, you OK?
00:43:58Is Hezer in?
00:43:59Yes.
00:43:59Is it OK to come in? Thank you.
00:44:01Is he upstairs?
00:44:03Yeah.
00:44:03Make you do us a favour,
00:44:04can you put your hands like this for me, please?
00:44:07Hezer Ayaz, the fire is currently
00:44:105.6 in the morning
00:44:11and you're probably under arrest,
00:44:12under new evidence about a terror murder.
00:44:15Follow these officers, mate.
00:44:18Go get the hard drives, mate.
00:44:20On arrest, the team wants to gather CCTV footage
00:44:25from the suspect's home.
00:44:27The only thing that we're going to need to take,
00:44:28I'll just bring my supervisor
00:44:30with this little hard drive box down here.
00:44:36I'll be right back.
00:44:38I'll be right back.
00:44:40I'll be right back.
00:44:41With the two suspects back in custody,
00:44:43detectives must prove Amr Shehzad
00:44:45and Hezer Ayaz were at the scene.
00:44:47Their phone data doesn't place them
00:44:50in the area at the time of the attack.
00:44:53But now, officers focus on a new piece of evidence.
00:44:58Footage that we obtained from his home address on arrest
00:45:02captures him many hours before the offence,
00:45:06leaving his home address.
00:45:10And you start to see the clothing that he's wearing.
00:45:14Dark-coloured trousers.
00:45:16And importantly, he's got this light-coloured stretch
00:45:20down both sides of the leg.
00:45:25So that light-coloured marking is consistent
00:45:28with the trousers worn by the gunman at the scene.
00:45:36So that's then when we started looking at his movements
00:45:41with the idea that he is the gunman.
00:45:45And from the markings on the trousers,
00:45:47we can be confident that he's the person
00:45:50who handled the gun at the scene.
00:45:52It's key evidence against suspected gunman Hezer Ayaz.
00:45:56But police are still urgently trying to identify
00:46:00the other violent attackers.
00:46:02Now, new CCTV from a petrol station
00:46:06could help uncover more suspects.
00:46:10So one of the vehicles that arrives at the Bentley Moore Club
00:46:12to drop off some of our offenders
00:46:14is a Silver Passat.
00:46:17We track that Silver Passat backwards.
00:46:20Eventually, we track it back to a petrol station.
00:46:24It's done the rounds prior to the offence,
00:46:26out drug dealing.
00:46:27And in that vehicle,
00:46:28it's clearly Cameron Moore and Shahzad Mahmood.
00:46:34They then get a call from Amar Khan
00:46:36as he makes his way towards the Bentley Moore Club.
00:46:39And we see that vehicle move in.
00:46:41So they've been given the go-ahead.
00:46:44And that's Cameron Moore and Shahzad Mahmood
00:46:47arriving in the offence.
00:46:56With the recovery of this footage,
00:46:59Major Crime Team 1 strikes.
00:47:05Eight armed response officers move in on the home of Shahzad Mahmood.
00:47:18For the element of surprise,
00:47:21the chainsaw will cut through the reinforced UPBC door,
00:47:25unlike a standard battering ram,
00:47:27which would cost them time
00:47:28that they cannot afford to lose.
00:47:32Police!
00:47:37Police!
00:47:39Police!
00:47:41Police!
00:47:43Police!
00:47:44Open the door!
00:47:44The door!
00:47:46There's another door!
00:47:47Halfway.
00:47:49Halfway, mate. What's your name?
00:47:50Henry.
00:47:52That's him.
00:47:53Mate, you're under arrest this position of the Ted Murdoch.
00:47:55You're going to have to say anything,
00:47:56but you may have defence for not to mention.
00:47:58Weren't question something like you're on your court, innit?
00:47:59You do say, maybe give your evidence.
00:48:00Do you understand?
00:48:05What's all this brown stuff, mate?
00:48:08What's all this brown stuff that's on the window sill
00:48:09and you're covered, innit?
00:48:10What is it?
00:48:15You speak English, yeah?
00:48:17Yes, sir.
00:48:17OK.
00:48:18I'm just asking you, what is it?
00:48:19Because you're covered in a substance,
00:48:22it's all over the bed and all over the window, mate.
00:48:23So what is it?
00:48:24You've chucked out?
00:48:25I was smoking, heroin.
00:48:27Heroin, yeah?
00:48:28It's on.
00:48:28OK.
00:48:30Did you turn your phone off, did you?
00:48:31Sorry, turn your phone off?
00:48:32No.
00:48:33No.
00:48:34What's your pay number for it?
00:48:36I don't know, sir.
00:48:37You don't know the pay number, OK?
00:48:39Yeah.
00:48:40The raid on Shahzad Mahmood uncovers Class A drugs.
00:48:44Police later arrest four more suspects, including the youngest gang member, 21-year-old Cameron Moore,
00:48:51bringing the total to eight in custody over the Warsaw attack.
00:48:56But the alleged ringleader, Amar Khan, is still on the run.
00:49:02He's got two options now.
00:49:03He either hand himself in or he can go on the run for the rest of his life.
00:49:07Yeah.
00:49:09You want to bring everybody to justice in a case like this.
00:49:13The fact we can't get our hands on him is hugely frustrating.
00:49:18And something we're going to have to remedy.
00:49:21Because it's going to bother us until we get him.
00:49:24So that's a challenge that is ongoing.
00:49:39As part of efforts to crack down on drugs across the West Midlands, the county line's task force is targeting
00:49:46a network known as the KP drugs line.
00:49:50Whilst we can say something's a drugs line, we've got to prove they sell heroin, we've got to prove they
00:49:54sell crack.
00:49:56It's good, somebody over there for me, my friend.
00:49:58Strip search has been authorised.
00:50:01Ryan, Lewis and Connor, whenever they're getting stopped, they've got no drugs.
00:50:06Sorry, dude.
00:50:08So we've had to go into a deeper dive about what the drugs line was doing.
00:50:18OK, we've got your insight, stand by.
00:50:21Then, on the 9th of May, the Operation Skybridge team make a crucial stop on a car.
00:50:29What have you got, lads?
00:50:31How long have you been in this car for?
00:50:33A couple of hours.
00:50:35A couple of hours.
00:50:36One of the occupants is part of Gavin's KP County line investigation.
00:50:41Connor Burns is the driver.
00:50:44We find a new individual in that car, which was Dylan Ford.
00:50:49He's the fourth person now we have identified with in this group.
00:50:57Connor and Dylan and Lewis have all been stopped together in some sort of fashion.
00:51:03ÂŁ300 was in the Senate cup holder, so they get searched.
00:51:06Have you got anything going to do with it that you shouldn't have?
00:51:11They also get strip searched as well.
00:51:13Again, no drugs have been found.
00:51:15But what these officers do do is they have a look at the boys' handsets.
00:51:20And when that comes back to us in intelligence, we check the call data,
00:51:24and it's the KP drugs line 1466 that they had got in that car.
00:51:29When we examine and analyse that data,
00:51:31it was quite clear that the drugs line had turned off.
00:51:34It was no longer receiving or making any calls.
00:51:38There was no text messages going to or from that telephone number.
00:51:41And then, once the stop is finished,
00:51:44that telephone number will later then reactivate and carry on its business.
00:51:48And we felt that that was no coincidence.
00:51:53Three days prior to this stop, on the 5th of May,
00:51:56the drugs line gets topped up at a newsagent in Erdington on Tyburn Road.
00:52:01A male, we believe to be Ryan Boeing,
00:52:03walks into that shop and buys a voucher for the drugs line.
00:52:07So we're quite happy that they're acting on behalf of the KP drugs line.
00:52:11Despite no drugs being seized,
00:52:14Gavin and his team have established a link
00:52:16between activity on the KP drugs line and their four suspects,
00:52:21allowing the investigation to move to the next stage.
00:52:24We could say the KP drugs line was selling heroin and crack cocaine.
00:52:28What we had to show was that they were in control of it,
00:52:30and it was those multiple encounters made by police on body camera
00:52:33that showed that they had control of it.
00:52:35We're quite happy that all these boys are involved,
00:52:38and they're sitting on that drugs line and operating on that drugs line
00:52:40as supplying heroin and crack.
00:52:42If we snare these four, and if they're charged,
00:52:45that drugs line should stop.
00:52:47As Gavin targets the KP drugs line
00:52:50and the cash behind wider drugs wars in the West Midlands,
00:52:54eight men involved in the violent attack in Warsaw
00:52:58have pled guilty and are being sentenced at Wolverhampton Crown Court.
00:53:13I mean, they'll serve a minimum of two-thirds of the sentences they're given today,
00:53:19so anyone sentenced to 18 years, for example,
00:53:22is doing a minimum of 12 in prison before they can be considered for parole,
00:53:27which is a significant period of time, obviously.
00:53:31You know, the man in his early 20s goes to prison for 12 years.
00:53:35He's a different man by the time he comes out.
00:53:36Inevitably, because he's 12 years older.
00:53:40Hopefully...
00:53:42a different, hopefully learn some kind of lesson,
00:53:44hopefully not wanting to go back at least.
00:53:50For their part in the brutal assault,
00:53:52the eight members of the Warsaw gang
00:53:55receive sentences totalling 118 years.
00:54:02Good sentence, yeah.
00:54:04Probably could have gone higher, in my opinion.
00:54:06Yeah.
00:54:06But at the end of the day, it's about
00:54:09putting these guys away for a significant period, isn't it?
00:54:11It's been my most difficult investigation without a shadow of a doubt.
00:54:15The complexity, the size of it,
00:54:17but sentences are really significant,
00:54:20it protects the public from these people for a long time,
00:54:22so overall I'm really happy.
00:54:24Great. Good to get it done as well.
00:54:26Good to get it done.
00:54:29But despite the result, a cloud hangs over the investigation.
00:54:34The alleged ringleader, Ammar Khan, continues to evade justice.
00:54:40As Major Crime Team 1 continue their search for Khan,
00:54:44another operation gathers pace.
00:54:47Gavin and his team prepare to move in on the KP drugs line.
00:54:51What we'll do, we'll strike at the addresses.
00:54:53If I get you fighting, head down there, hold, close.
00:54:56We might be a bit alive, so just be aware of that.
00:54:59To prevent any of the suspects from running or destroying evidence,
00:55:03the team plan to arrest all four men at the same time.
00:55:07Well, we're going to move very shortly, so people will get back to cars and stuff,
00:55:10and more people will start to move towards.
00:55:16If we only arrest two of those subjects, the other two are going to find out quite quickly
00:55:20that they have been arrested.
00:55:21So they're going to get rid of evidence, get rid of their clothing,
00:55:25get rid of drugs, get rid of their personal phones.
00:55:27So it's really important to us that, one, we get all four in at the same time
00:55:29to make a proper disruption into the drugs line.
00:55:32But two, it also gives us the biggest advantage of getting the evidence that we're seeking.
00:55:40They lead quite chaotic lives to the Isles,
00:55:43which is unsurprising for, you know, people who take part in these types of offences.
00:55:49So we think we've got them down to three addresses,
00:55:52possibly a fourth address this morning.
00:55:57Twelve armed response officers join the county line's task force
00:56:00as they move in on several addresses around Shard End in Birmingham.
00:56:10When going into a raid, I have a number of concerns before we do it,
00:56:13whether we're going to be recovering drugs, whether we're going to be filing phones.
00:56:17I'm always anxious that we're not going to find them all.
00:56:21Yeah, all resources are in place, we're well clear.
00:56:23Yeah, all officers on this channel, it will be a strike, strike, strike.
00:56:27And also, these operations are quite high risk.
00:56:30We're crashing through people's doors in the early hours of the morning.
00:56:34They're not going to be particularly happy about that.
00:56:39They're not going to be able to have a strike.
00:56:41They're not going to be able to get away from the night.
00:56:42They're not going to be able to get their money.
00:56:42They're not going to be able to get their money.
00:56:44As part of the war on drugs in the West Midlands,
00:56:48Gavin McGrath and the County Lines task force
00:56:51have been targeting the funding behind the drug gangs.
00:56:55After uncovering the KP drugs line, they identified four suspects.
00:57:00Connor Burns, Lewis Simpson, Ryan Bowen and Dylan Ford.
00:57:06Now they are about to bring them all in.
00:57:13Thanks, Kel.
00:57:20Please!
00:57:21Put everyone to the door!
00:57:25Show us your hands.
00:57:27That's it.
00:57:28Connor Burns is arrested first.
00:57:31Call him here, Jim.
00:57:32Yeah, entry effective, well clear, one detained.
00:57:37At the same time, other raids are taking place across town.
00:57:42No!
00:58:00Lewis Simpson is the second member of the KP drug line to be arrested.
00:58:08That's two.
00:58:10The team were hoping to find Dylan Ford at the same address as Connor Burns, but he's not there.
00:58:17Yeah, mate, we've got Burns at this address.
00:58:19Ford's outstanding, mate.
00:58:21We just need to find him now, but I'll work on that.
00:58:24All right, pal.
00:58:25Not far away, police approached the home of Ryan Bowen.
00:58:35All right, mate, you all right?
00:58:37All right, come here.
00:58:38Come here.
00:58:39Come here.
00:58:41Yeah.
00:58:42Yeah.
00:58:43I've got glass.
00:58:47Oh, you got it, where?
00:58:49I've got Ryan Bowen.
00:58:52Oh, wonderful, mate.
00:58:53That's great news, mate.
00:58:55While there are no drugs, a large amount of cash is found at Ryan Bowen's property.
00:59:04The search of Lewis Simpson's address yields eight machetes and drug-dealing paraphernalia.
00:59:12And while evidence is being gathered, Gavin prepares to search the address where Connor Burns was arrested.
00:59:19This is his bedroom.
00:59:20So we've got over here, we've got a set of scales that are on display just behind you over there.
00:59:24There's a phone over there that's going to be of interest to us.
00:59:26We've got some cash over here that's been stacked up with a lock knife.
00:59:31And then we've got a set of keys here.
00:59:34We weren't aware he had a car.
00:59:37So we'll get these three cars checked out.
00:59:39I don't think there's been any recovery of drugs, but the thing is, call these car keys.
00:59:43They're going to be in the cars.
00:59:52So far, we've executed three warrants against these suspects, as we plan to do.
00:59:57Dylan Ford will continue to make inquiries into where he is.
01:00:00But at the moment, so far, a good result for us.
01:00:03We never know where they're going to be.
01:00:04But we've got three out of four that we want.
01:00:17Despite compelling evidence, further searches of Ryan and Lewis' vehicles uncover no drugs.
01:00:24Ryan, Connor and Lewis will be subject to questioning.
01:00:28We will put the evidence to them.
01:00:31We'll accuse them of being involved in a conspiracy to supply drugs and give them an opportunity to account for
01:00:37themselves.
01:00:39As the three suspects in the KP Drugsline case are being interviewed, Gavin begins gathering further evidence.
01:00:50We've now got the data from Ryan Bowen's handset, which we've now processed.
01:00:55A drugs line is like any other business.
01:00:57They have all the same issues a regular business does.
01:00:59And Ryan's incurring expenses as part of being employed by that drugs line.
01:01:03So he's tightening up his expenses so he can claim them back out of the float free or free for
01:01:09free, which would suggest that's payment of drugs.
01:01:12Or he's been given a number of wraps for what he's done that day.
01:01:14And then there's a reference to 27 items.
01:01:17So it's very rare that they will explicitly describe drugs.
01:01:20So they'll refer to it as items or something of that nature.
01:01:23So that will indicate what he's got left over at the end of that shift.
01:01:26When I looked at his search history, so there's some things that he's searched for, such as, can police bug
01:01:33your phone?
01:01:34Why do police take photos of me on the roadside?
01:01:37So he's obviously got some sort of preoccupation as to what the police's capabilities are.
01:01:42Given the case that we do have, this is certainly strong supporting evidence and destrempens the case that we already
01:01:47have against him.
01:01:49We have sought advice from the Crown Prosecution Service.
01:01:52Even with onodrugs, they determined there was sufficient evidence to charge them with being involved in the supply of Class
01:01:58A drugs.
01:01:59At this point, Dylan Ford is still at large.
01:02:02We don't know where he is.
01:02:04We feel the KP drugs line is lucrative and a profitable business.
01:02:09It may reactivate should we not be able to get him into custody.
01:02:20One month after the verdicts in the Warsaw attack,
01:02:27Major Crime Team 1 have had a significant breakthrough.
01:02:32After searching for Ammar Khan for upwards of a year,
01:02:39we get notification from the Turkish authorities that he's been arrested in Turkey with a false passport trying to enter
01:02:44the country.
01:02:46So, complete surprise for us.
01:02:49Sometimes policing just gives you those pleasant surprises, which is great after all that hard work.
01:02:55All we need to do is attend the airport and get him.
01:02:58So, it's the best piece of news I've had all year.
01:03:02Kosh and colleague Tabitha Bridgewater have gone to Birmingham Airport to arrest Ammar Khan.
01:03:18We're just going to go around the back, yeah?
01:03:23Be careful, I think I'll factor my arm, please, this one.
01:03:25This one, OK? Yeah.
01:03:50It's the final piece of the jigsaw for the team.
01:03:52Each of the victims has made a full recovery, and with alleged ringleader Ammar Khan now in custody,
01:03:59nine suspects behind the shocking Warsaw attack have been charged.
01:04:06Cobblestone's my proudest achievement as a police officer.
01:04:09This arrest completes our investigation.
01:04:11We've got no further outstanding suspects, so it's putting Cobblestone to bed, which is a great achievement for us.
01:04:30There is a dog.
01:04:31Yeah, a big dog.
01:04:35Weeks after the arrests of the other KP Drugline gang members,
01:04:40police have received information about the potential whereabouts of their remaining suspect, Dylan Ford.
01:04:49Hello there, is it a ****?
01:04:51No, no, I'm ****.
01:04:53Can I come in and have a word and explain why we're here?
01:04:55Yeah. Yeah, thank you.
01:04:57We're here because we're looking for Dylan, and we've been told that he's been staying here, OK?
01:05:01Is he here at the moment?
01:05:03Um, yeah.
01:05:04Yeah, OK, we're going to have to go up and speak to him, OK?
01:05:08Dylan?
01:05:10It's the police, mate.
01:05:11OK, all right, you know you're wanted, mate, so you have to come with us.
01:05:14We're under arrest and suspicion of conspiracy to supply Class A, all right?
01:05:18Do you understand this?
01:05:19Yeah.
01:05:24Connor Burns, Ryan Bowen, Lewis Simpson and Dylan Ford
01:05:29were all charged and convicted in the conspiracy to supply Class A drugs.
01:05:37I'm really pleased we have all four included in that case.
01:05:42They're quite challenging investigations, so it was really satisfying to demonstrate to that group that we could catch them.
01:05:50The reality is, once we deal with this drugs line, we are simply given another one.
01:05:58So, yeah, it will be just straight on to the next job.
