In the money: How much will Shakira receive after winning battle against Spain's tax authorities?



Pop star Shakira is celebrating victory after a Spanish court annulled a hefty tax penalty imposed in 2011 claiming she failed to declare her residence in Spain. The singer has published a statement in which she says "there was never any fraud".

00:01A Spanish court has ordered the tax authority to refund Colombian pop star Shakira more than
00:0855 million euros, which it ruled were improperly collected in a dispute over her taxes from 2011.
00:16The ruling concluded that tax authorities had failed to prove that the artist resided in Spain
00:22for more than 183 days, the required amount to be considered a tax residence in the country.
00:29She had in fact spent 163 days in the country, the ruling found.
00:34The hits don't lie, Singer is now set to receive more than 55 million euros in the amount she had
00:40initially paid plus legal interest. Tax authorities had also argued she lived in Spain long enough to
00:47be liable for taxes between 2012 and 2014, but she reached a separate settlement for that case with
00:54prosecutors back in 2023, avoiding a broader fraud case. Following the verdict, she denounced being
01:01treated as guilty for years, enduring brutal public shame in and orchestrated campaigns to destroy her reputation.
