00:00Hi!
00:00Hi!
00:01How are you?
00:02Pandora!
00:03Pandora!
00:04What you need to do is get control of Pandora.
00:07If dogs go wild...
00:10They are absolutely nuts.
00:12Is the dog around?
00:15I can't control them.
00:17Come on now, big boy.
00:18Nathan thinks he can read.
00:19Surely he can.
00:20He can't.
00:21He's a dog.
00:22Yes, he can.
00:22And get up.
00:23Oh, here we go.
00:24No, get down.
00:25To no good.
00:26That was me now, is it?
00:28I'm honoured.
00:28Or down.
00:29Oh, no.
00:31And dirty.
00:32He loves a big, large crap.
00:35Oh.
00:36Tank likes to rub his boy part.
00:39What is going on with you, Tank?
00:41When pups...
00:42I wonder what we're going to learn today.
00:44...need to be schooled.
00:46Three, two, one, and sit.
00:48Fantastic.
00:49Look at that.
00:50Or if your pooch...
00:52He's dropped one.
00:53He got a whiff.
00:54...has a personal problem.
00:55Some dog has bacterias that are gas-producing.
00:59Just in case.
01:01One man...
01:02Hey, look at that.
01:04...will give it his all.
01:06Jack!
01:06Oi!
01:07Leave it.
01:08And get answers...
01:09I think I might know what's going on.
01:11And it's not what you think.
01:12...to any doggy dilemma.
01:15Yeah, that's next level, innit?
01:20Come on, big lad.
01:21This week...
01:21Come on, Rhi.
01:22Come on, Rhi.
01:23No, no, don't plan cake, please.
01:25An immovable colossus...
01:27No, Rhi.
01:28He knows this is the vet.
01:29He knows the car park.
01:31Come on.
01:32Refusing medical aid.
01:33Nathan thinks he can read vet.
01:35And he knows what vet is.
01:37But he can't read vet.
01:38Sure he can.
01:39He can't.
01:40He's a dog.
01:41Can your four-legged friend be vegan?
01:43Every day, Krushka would need to be eaten.
01:46All of that.
01:47You need all of that to match that.
01:49...a grandma in danger.
01:51And frankly, he's going to trip me up.
01:54Of losing the dog she adores.
01:57I don't want to get rid of him.
01:59It's really sad.
02:00Because I really love him.
02:02And Graham takes a hairless dog...
02:04Just a very light touch to start off with.
02:07...for a spa day.
02:08I'm enjoying that.
02:13First up, Graham's in God's Own Country.
02:16Well, I'm in Yorkshire today, near Barnsley.
02:19And I'm on my way to see a couple...
02:21...who've got a problem with a dog and a vehicle.
02:24And I'm just wondering...
02:25...what kind of vehicular hell awaits me today.
02:31Nathan and Cathy...
02:33You're a good boy.
02:34...got six-year-old Rio...
02:36...as a puppy.
02:37Good boy.
02:39It's a fantastic dog...
02:41...with a strange personality.
02:44Rio, come on now.
02:46Come on, big lad.
02:46Now a 15-stone adult...
02:49Come on.
02:50Come on, Rio.
02:51Rio.
02:51He takes some manoeuvring about at times.
02:54Come on now, big boy.
02:55...getting their enormous Leon Burger...
02:58...a German working dog...
03:00He'll not come out.
03:01Definitely not come out.
03:02...to the vet...
03:04Come on, Rio.
03:05No, no, don't plan cake, please.
03:06He knows this is the vet.
03:08He knows the car park.
03:10Come on.
03:10...is a colossal battle.
03:12Come on.
03:12They're losing.
03:13Come on, Rio.
03:15Come on, shift.
03:16Shift.
03:17Nathan thinks he can read.
03:19Sure he can.
03:20He can't.
03:20He's a dog.
03:21Come on.
03:22Rio.
03:23He says he can read vet, and he knows what vet is, but he can't read vet.
03:29No, Rio, please.
03:31He just pancakes himself to the floor.
03:34Come on.
03:34We've never got him in.
03:36Never, ever got him in the vet.
03:37The vet has to come out, do what she can.
03:40We don't normally see dogs in backs of vans.
03:43Routine car park check-ups are one thing.
03:46I think it would probably take about six good strong people to take him into the vet.
03:52Emergency treatment, another.
03:54It is a big worry of the future.
03:57If he ever needs a major operation, in fact, we just don't know how we're going to do it.
04:01Rio.
04:02And that's not the only issue.
04:04Come on.
04:05Rio's a serial refuser.
04:07Rio.
04:08He will not walk upstairs for anybody.
04:12Even at home where bedrooms are up them.
04:15Come on.
04:16Hey.
04:16Rio's never climbed a flight of stairs.
04:19The big issue with that is he doesn't like being on his own.
04:22Come on, kid.
04:23You've never been upstairs.
04:24You don't know what's up with you.
04:26So, middle of the night, you know, you laid in bed.
04:30Rio.
04:32He'll start crying, barking.
04:34And he's no option.
04:35You have to get up.
04:36Come on.
04:38Come on, big boy.
04:39It is really draining.
04:41Yeah, I'm exhausted.
04:44Rio, come on.
04:45Upstairs.
04:49Graham's meeting Rio.
04:51Come on.
04:52At his vet's car park.
04:54Morning.
04:55Heyo.
04:56Heyo.
04:56Heyo.
04:57Heyo.
04:57You alright?
04:59You're struggling there, aren't you?
05:01Oh, complete nightmare.
05:03You can't get him out of the van then?
05:04Well, we can't get him to the vet's.
05:05If you get him out of the van, there's no way you get him to the vet's.
05:09Really?
05:09But he has a bullshit jab in the van.
05:11Oh, really?
05:12I'd have to come out to him, yeah.
05:14When people are walking past, vet's bum's stuck out at the van.
05:18What does he weigh?
05:19The last time we weighed him, I believe we got 93 kilos.
05:2293 kilos?
05:23Yeah.
05:24Wow.
05:2450 and a half stone or thereabouts.
05:26Might be the heaviest dog I've ever worked with.
05:28So what do you do, eventually, to get him out?
05:31How does this end?
05:31Come on.
05:33Yeah.
05:33You just get him on there.
05:35Yeah.
05:36And then we drag him.
05:37Pull him.
05:37Pull him.
05:38And then he pulls it for us out.
05:39Right.
05:40So if we go for a walk now, what's going to happen?
05:42He'll get a few steps and he'll pancake down, yeah.
05:45And right on cue.
05:47No.
05:49No.
05:50If somebody comes flying round the corner, we're in trouble, aren't we?
05:55Just down the road, there's another car park.
05:58Oh, we're using the push and pull technique now, are we?
06:01Oh, yeah.
06:02Oh, you're not there in the end.
06:03Hey!
06:05Rio also refuses to leave.
06:07Rio.
06:07No, I don't want to go.
06:08I want to go back in the van.
06:10The one next to his groomers.
06:12Rio.
06:12Come on.
06:13Come on.
06:15So basically, anywhere you go, he just refuses to get out?
06:18No, not really.
06:19Oh.
06:19There's one place he will go.
06:21Oh, yeah?
06:21Without any problem, and that's the pub.
06:24The pub?
06:25Is that right?
06:26He loves the pub.
06:27Oh.
06:27He's like a whippet when he gets out at van.
06:30Is he really?
06:33First, it's time to wet Rio's whistle.
06:36I'm a bit confused.
06:37Come on, Rio.
06:38Pub.
06:39Why is he so happy to go in a pub, but no other establishment?
06:45He knows where he's going, doesn't he?
06:46Yeah.
06:47Good Lord.
06:48Straight in.
06:49Straight in, yeah.
06:53Oh.
06:53Can I have his usual, please?
06:59No wonder he likes coming to the pub.
07:02I'll take it to your regulars then, are you?
07:04This is his local.
07:05Is it?
07:07Dare I ask.
07:08Have you got any other problems?
07:10Stairs.
07:11Stairs?
07:11He won't go upstairs.
07:13Oh, he won't go upstairs?
07:14No, no, no.
07:15Do you think you can show me, Mabby?
07:17Yep.
07:17Come on, Rio.
07:19Rio.
07:20Not Rio.
07:20Up them stairs.
07:21Up upstairs.
07:22Yeah, Mum.
07:22Rio.
07:24Rio, come on.
07:25Come on.
07:27Rio.
07:29Rio, I can't move now.
07:31Rio.
07:32Rio.
07:33Come on.
07:34Go on, Rio.
07:35Rio.
07:37He's not happy, is he?
07:38Rio.
07:38Upstairs.
07:39No.
07:40Not going.
07:40Get off me.
07:42From a puppy who's never, never entertained stairs.
07:45So it's any stairs, any place?
07:46Any stairs, any place.
07:48That's why he cries at night.
07:50He wakes up about three o'clock in the morning and he sits at the bottom of the stairs just
07:56crying and crying.
07:57Does he?
07:58Eventually, twice every night, you have to get up.
08:02Right, so basically you just want me to get this monster of a job out of the van on
08:07in command, walking to wherever and walking upstairs.
08:10Yeah.
08:11Yeah.
08:11Right.
08:12I might need a drink.
08:14Yeah.
08:16Mini cheddary biscuits.
08:17No wonder he loves the pub.
08:19And as if trying to get a 93 kilo dog out of the van wasn't enough, he won't go upstairs.
08:25Rio, come on.
08:26Rio.
08:27And then he whines in the middle of the night because he's lonely.
08:29Poor thing.
08:30Rio.
08:31And you really can't drag 93 kilos worth of resisting dog up any stairs, can you?
08:36Yeah.
08:36Well, I'm going to work us out here.
08:38Coming up.
08:39Archie, stop it.
08:41A furniture fiend.
08:42Out the way, out the way.
08:44Faces rehoming.
08:46I am frightened and losing them.
08:47If I go over, that'll be me finished.
08:50A meaty question.
08:52So we're vegan and you're wondering if a dog could have an exclusively vegan diet.
08:57And can Graham.
08:58Come on.
08:59Rio.
09:00Come on then.
09:00Give Rio lift off.
09:02Shall we?
09:03Come on.
09:04Come on.
09:05Rio.
09:06Rio.
09:14In Barnsley, Nathan and Cathy's heavyweight hound.
09:19Come on, Rio.
09:20No.
09:21No, no, please.
09:22Is as stubborn as he's large.
09:24Come on, Rio.
09:25He will not walk upstairs for anybody or anything.
09:29Not only does Rio refuse to climb stairs.
09:33Come on.
09:34Hey.
09:34Come on, Rio.
09:35He won't leave his van.
09:36Come on now, big boy.
09:37Rio, please.
09:39And walk willingly.
09:40No.
09:41To the vets.
09:42Nathan thinks he can read.
09:44Sure he can.
09:45He can't.
09:46He's a dog.
09:47He knows where he's going, doesn't he?
09:48But there's one place he loves visiting.
09:51Have you got yourself a sausage roll?
09:52No, I haven't dreamt.
09:53It's for real.
09:54I might have known.
09:55His local pub.
09:57There we go.
09:58I think we can understand why he wants to come here.
10:00There's many cheddar biscuits and sausage rolls to be had.
10:03But I think there's something you've not spotted.
10:05This morning when I first met you, you looked apprehensive.
10:07And he's reading your face.
10:10He's looking at you going, no, this isn't good, is it?
10:12Something bad going on here.
10:13They're not happy.
10:14No, no, no.
10:15I'll stay where I am.
10:16Safe back.
10:17Yeah?
10:17Yeah, correct.
10:18Absolutely correct.
10:18As opposed to when you're here.
10:22Right?
10:22Yeah, yeah.
10:23Relax.
10:24Yeah.
10:25The energy of it has got to be a bit more.
10:27Let's go to the pub kind of energy.
10:29I just thought he was big, fat and stubborn.
10:33But Graham pointed out, maybe it's 50-50, we're to blame as well.
10:39I'm watching Cathy trying to get Rio up the stairs.
10:41I'm like, oh, no, please stop because you're going to take a tumble here.
10:45Come on, upstairs.
10:46Rio!
10:47You know, she's pulling on him.
10:49He's pulling on her.
10:51Rio!
10:51It's not going to end well, is it?
10:53We need to find a better way.
10:55Graham doesn't think he's scared of stairs.
10:58It's just a negative association.
11:01Now, the thing is this, if I was to go up there, and I'm, come on, land up, you get,
11:05and I'm pulling and pulling.
11:06Yeah?
11:06He's going to pull away from me, isn't he?
11:08I thought so, yes.
11:09Which is exactly what happened in the pub.
11:10So he needs to turn it into a positive.
11:14Ideally, I'm going to keep a loose lead, right?
11:16Okay.
11:17And hopes a not-so-secret ingredient could flip the switch.
11:22I've got bits of food.
11:23While a taste of the pub.
11:25I reckon I'm going to alternate this.
11:27Sausage, cheese, sausage, cheese.
11:29Might encourage him to take the stairs.
11:32And, when I get to the top, I'm going to put quite a few down.
11:35Like the jackpot.
11:37Yeah, yeah.
11:37The real secret sauce.
11:40There we go.
11:41Is changing Nathan and Cathy's mindset.
11:45Now, remember, we need to hit this with a bit of pub energy.
11:48Yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah.
11:49As we might now go, come on, lads, all happy, you know.
11:51Yep, yep, yep.
11:51Very good.
11:53So will an old-fashioned knees up.
11:55Right.
11:56Upstairs.
11:57Fuelled by home-brewed pub energy.
12:01Rio, come on.
12:02Come on, Rio.
12:04Rio.
12:05Really be enough.
12:07Come on, Rio.
12:08To get him climbing.
12:10Good boy, go on then.
12:11Come on.
12:12Shall we?
12:12Come on.
12:12Come on then.
12:15Rio.
12:16Rio.
12:16Rio.
12:17Rio.
12:17Come on.
12:18Come on.
12:19Rio.
12:20Rio.
12:21Come on.
12:22Your mum's up here.
12:23Yeah, look.
12:24He's like, no.
12:25Pub vibes still bottled.
12:27Rio.
12:28Trainings on the rocks.
12:31Come on.
12:34Now, remember, what about energy?
12:36Can the couple put their stress on ice?
12:40Come on.
12:40And roll out a barrel of fun.
12:44Hello.
12:44Hello, Rio.
12:45Hey.
12:47Come on, Rio.
12:49Rio, come on.
12:49Come on, Rio.
12:50Come on.
12:51Come on.
12:52You can do it.
12:53Hello.
12:53Good lad.
12:54Come on.
12:54Come on.
12:55Yay.
12:56Come on.
12:57Yay.
12:57You can do it.
12:58Good boy.
13:00Yay.
13:02Clever lad.
13:04Yay.
13:05Clever lad.
13:06You've never been up here.
13:07Hey.
13:08Fantastic.
13:11Hey, that was a result.
13:13Oh, it's absolutely brilliant.
13:14Literally, first time he's ever been up here.
13:16So he's never been up here in his life?
13:17Never.
13:17He has never, ever, ever been upstairs.
13:19Never, ever.
13:21I wish you'd show him around.
13:24Interestingly, he didn't bother with the food on the way up.
13:27No, no.
13:34No treats required.
13:36It's a win for positivity.
13:38Oh, it's a fantastic result, aren't you?
13:41Yeah.
13:42Yeah.
13:42How about that?
13:43Still don't believe it, like.
13:46But will Rio let his dad...
13:49Let's see if you can do it for yourself.
13:50Let's go.
13:51Take the pub upstairs.
13:52Nathan, you know what to do, don't you?
13:54Done.
13:55I'll see you now.
13:57And give them all...
13:58Lisa.
13:59Come on.
13:59...a good night's sleep.
14:02Come on, nice and steady.
14:04Nice and steady.
14:05Come on, Rio.
14:06Nice and steady.
14:07Come on, Rio.
14:08Good boy.
14:09Nice and steady.
14:10Nice and steady.
14:12Oh, you're a beauty.
14:13Yeah.
14:14That's it.
14:14Keep coming backwards, Cathy.
14:16Yes.
14:16Yes.
14:18Who's a clever boy?
14:19You are.
14:21Oh, that's brilliant.
14:23Absolutely fantastic.
14:24Absolutely brilliant.
14:26Absolutely unbelievable.
14:28If we can now get him upstairs, that will really, really improve our lives.
14:33We don't have to get out of bed.
14:34Exactly, we don't.
14:35No, we don't.
14:36Just shouting to come home.
14:39More than impressed.
14:40Isn't it amazing?
14:41A six-year-old dog and he's never seen the upstairs of his own house.
14:45So I'm really pleased for him.
14:47But when it comes to getting your dog out of the van...
14:50Nope.
14:51If somebody comes flying round the corner, we're in trouble, aren't we?
14:54And to the vet.
14:55Well, that literally could be life and death.
14:58So there's a lot more hanging on this next time when I come back.
15:01Every time, Miss, innit?
15:03Every time.
15:04Fed up here.
15:06Graham's career calling is mending our dogs...
15:10Let's see what we've got here, then.
15:12...dodgy behaviour.
15:12Ooh, that's puzzling.
15:16But to answer questions not about their wayward ways...
15:19So many questions from so many people.
15:22He's gathered a team of top pet professionals, including a vet...
15:27Good results.
15:28...a nutritionist...
15:29If you compare these, this has got far more omega-3 in it.
15:33...and a groomer.
15:34What a clever game.
15:36Today, he's homing in on nutrition.
15:39Hi, Graham.
15:41My name's Stephanie, and this is Proshka.
15:43Hello.
15:43My question is, can a dog have an exclusively vegan diet?
15:49I don't know whether a dog can be vegan, but the question has piqued my interest.
15:55To investigate, Graham's on his way to Wetherby.
16:01But before he introduces his resident nutritionist to Proshka...
16:05Hiya, nice to meet you.
16:07Hello, hi.
16:08Stephanie.
16:08Stephanie, and it's Gordon.
16:10Hello.
16:11He wants to know why Stephanie and Gordon...
16:13Hey, and Proshka.
16:15Yes.
16:16...want their Brussels Griffin...
16:17Yeah, he's a unique looking dog, isn't he?
16:19He was born grumpy, and he's been grumpy ever since.
16:22Has he?
16:22Yeah.
16:23To eat plant-based food.
16:27I'm guessing that's because you guys eat a vegan diet yourself, do you?
16:30We do eat a vegan diet, yeah.
16:32But we do buy quite a lot of meat.
16:34So we've got 15 dogs.
16:36Wow, okay.
16:37And how does that make you feel?
16:38So, yeah, it's an odd word morally, but we want to do what's best for our animals.
16:45So, we're a little bit tall.
16:48Chloe Fuller has five years' experience in dog nutrition.
16:53We think about their breeding, we think about their training, but we don't often think about their food.
16:58Pleased to meet you.
16:58Stephanie, Gordon, Proshka.
17:01And I love being able to come in and share a completely different perspective.
17:04I am obsessed.
17:06And what breed is Proshka?
17:07Yeah, he's a Brussels Griffon.
17:09Oh, wow.
17:11So, what's the problem then?
17:12Ah, well, not so much a problem, but a big question.
17:15So, we're vegan, and we were wondering if a dog could have an exclusively vegan diet.
17:20Okay, and do you just have Proshka, or do you have other dogs at home as well?
17:24No, we do have a big crowd at home.
17:27We've got 15 dogs in total, and I'm obviously buying a lot of meat.
17:32The good news is dogs can eat vegetables.
17:35And you know what?
17:36It's actually a really good opportunity for me to clear up a bit of a myth, because people always go,
17:40well, dogs are wolves, you know, they're carnivores.
17:42They're not.
17:43They're actually obligate omnivores.
17:45So, what that means is that they are meat eaters, but they also have an ability to digest plant-based
17:52protein, too.
17:53Okay.
17:53But this is where it kind of gets a little bit tricky.
17:57So, this is what you're currently feeding Proshka, right?
17:59Yes.
18:00This is actually what Proshka would need over the course of the entire day.
18:03So, it's quite a small portion.
18:05When pondering a vegetable-based doggy diet...
18:08So, Graham, can you bring in my chopping board, please?
18:11Right, there you go.
18:12There's a ton of stuff there.
18:14There it is.
18:15First, consider portion size.
18:18So, we're going to weigh out how much he would need to not lose weight, okay?
18:23So, how much food he would need on a daily basis.
18:25Only looking at the calories.
18:27This isn't even trying to consider meeting all of Proshka's nutritional needs.
18:31So, it's already looking like quite a lot here that I'm struggling to fit in.
18:35So, we're going to add some broccoli.
18:37No, that's not quite enough.
18:39Nope.
18:41Yeah.
18:41Oh.
18:42Wow.
18:44Every day, Proshka would need to be eaten all of that.
18:50So, you need all of that to match that.
18:52And that's just calories, yeah?
18:54Yeah, just the calories, not even making it nutritionally complete.
18:58Vegetables can deliver sufficient calories, but missing nutrients must be supplemented.
19:04An alternative is fortified vegan food.
19:08This here is actually a commercial vegan diet for dogs.
19:12And it has all the nutrients he needs as well.
19:14The question is, is it actually good for him?
19:18The problem is that we don't have any lifetime studies.
19:22Early studies do show promising signs, but is it giving us enough confidence to go,
19:27yes, 100%, that's not going to cause my dog any problems over the course of their entire life?
19:31That we just don't know.
19:35But could we say, for instance, just reduce the amount of meat we're giving Proshka at the moment?
19:39Yeah, absolutely.
19:40I think, ultimately, there's no reason that you can't swap out one or two days a week with a vegan
19:46diet for them.
19:48So, without sufficient evidence-based science yet available...
19:53So, is that a decent compromise?
19:54I think that's an excellent compromise, yeah.
19:57It's recommended safe to only switch to a purely vegan diet a couple of times a week.
20:04It's definitely food for thought.
20:06See what I did then?
20:07I like that.
20:14Leaving Proshka with plenty to chew over, Graham's heading south-west, answering a cry for help.
20:21I'm in Western Supermare today, and I'm on my way to see a little Jack Russell, who is causing quite
20:27a problem in the house.
20:28It's getting quite dangerous.
20:30From a three-generational household.
20:32Now, a lot of Jack Russells get under your feet, but this one, apparently, goes for legs.
20:42For the last two years...
20:46Archie, stop it!
20:47Archie, stop it!
20:49Enough!
20:49Stop it!
20:50Leave the chair alone!
20:52Stop it!
20:52Archie's made life at Cathy's house unbearable.
20:57Stop it, Archie!
20:58Stop it!
21:00He's a lovely dog.
21:02He's a lovely, lovely dog.
21:04It's just this behaviour.
21:05Let me...
21:06Archie, stop it!
21:07Leave it!
21:07Leave it!
21:08Archie!
21:09He chews any kind of legs, chair legs, outdoors, indoors.
21:14Archie, stop it!
21:16Let me have the chair!
21:17Stop it!
21:18Hey!
21:20Her parents, Barry and Janet...
21:23Come here!
21:24...decided to live with their daughter's family for a peaceful retirement.
21:28We all moved in together in 2009.
21:32Due to an injury, I got at work with my back.
21:35That means I had to finish work.
21:37When Archie arrived, Janet fell for him.
21:41What I love about Archie is his character and his cheekiness.
21:46I love him to bits, but he can be a nice dog and then he turns into a little devil.
21:55Archie, stop it!
21:56She might love him, but at mealtimes, Archie threatens Janet's safety most.
22:05It just makes dinner time in the household really unpleasant and really, really stressful.
22:13The worry I have is falling over him.
22:17Out of the way!
22:18Out of the way!
22:18I'm frightened.
22:19He's going to trip me up.
22:21They both have had mobility problems for a long time.
22:24Come on, Mum! Come on, Mum!
22:25He's always under my mum's feet.
22:27Out of the way, Archie!
22:28Out of the way!
22:29I worry that she's going to fall over and hurt herself.
22:32And then you feel really guilty because we wanted to make their retirement really happy and stress-free.
22:39Leave the chair alone! Stop it!
22:41And it is not like that.
22:43Archie, come here! Archie!
22:45If he could be fixed, it would mean the world to us because we love the little furry thing so
22:51much.
22:56Can Graham bring Harmony back to the house?
23:00Here you go, Graham. Proper cup of tea for you.
23:03Magic. Where's it from?
23:04Yorkshire.
23:05Well, there you go. That'll do nicely.
23:07Always, always the best.
23:08Archie, leave it. Leave it.
23:10No.
23:11Can I sit down, please? Archie?
23:14Leave it. Archie.
23:15Ah!
23:16Ah!
23:17Ah!
23:19Ah!
23:19Archie!
23:20Oh, Archie!
23:21He took the chair in!
23:23So, as you can see, when I try to sit down or pull the chair out, he likes to attack
23:30the chair leg and the point where he will pull the chair legs over.
23:35Any of these chairs?
23:36Any of these chairs.
23:37Leave the chair alone! Stop it!
23:39Archie fell out with the furniture two years ago.
23:43We'd finished the mill, I got up, didn't realise he was there, pushed the chair in, and the chair legs
23:49must have caught him.
23:50Ah!
23:50And that was the triggery thing.
23:52Oh, I see.
23:52Yeah.
23:53So, the lady on the end there...
23:55Yes, hello.
23:56...is my mum, Janet.
23:57So, we've got three generations here.
23:59So, how bad has it gone, Janet?
24:00It's got so bad that I'm worried he's going to trip me up.
24:07And because I've got a dodgy knee and a dodgy shoulder that needs to be placed in, I am frightened
24:15of losing him.
24:16If I go over, that'd be me finished.
24:20So, you'd have to re-home him.
24:22But, deep down, I don't want to get rid of him. It's really sad, because I really love him.
24:29But you're thinking of going separate ways?
24:32Yeah.
24:34How does that make you feel?
24:35Yeah.
24:36Sad, because it's not his fault, is it?
24:39I'm worried about my little doggy.
24:42So, the way Archie is in anybody's house would be, at the very least, a nuisance.
24:48But here, it's actually dangerous.
24:51How's the way? How's the way?
24:52You've got an elderly couple who, in Janet's case, she's very unsteady on her feet.
24:57So, as a result of that, and Archie doesn't know this, but his future in that household, in the family
25:03that he's lived with for ten years, it's in jeopardy.
25:07Coming up, will Rio believe the vet?
25:10Let's give it pub energy.
25:12So, er...
25:13...is just as fun as the boozer.
25:15Come on!
25:16Can a trip to the groomer...
25:18When they're producing this oil, it's getting blocked in the pores.
25:21So, what we want to be doing is exfoliation.
25:23...protect a hairless dog's skin.
25:26And can Graham...
25:27You operate the chair, I'll operate the dog.
25:30Okay.
25:31...save Archie's seat at the table.
25:42In Somerset...
25:44Stop it!
25:46...Archie's chair chomping...
25:48Stop it, Archie!
25:50...makes mealtime so dangerous...
25:52If I go over, that'd be me finished.
25:55...Janet might have to rehome the dog she adores.
25:59Deep time, I don't want to get rid of him.
26:01It's really sad, because I really love him.
26:04The family think Archie took against chairs after an accident.
26:09And Graham agrees.
26:12It does very much sound like that one day, unfortunately, Barry, when you've managed to catch him with the chair,
26:18that probably did change everything.
26:20Because basically, bless him, he's scared.
26:23Yeah.
26:23So we've got to help him to understand that moving chair legs aren't a danger to him.
26:29And then, in turn, he won't be a danger to you.
26:32Yeah.
26:32Yeah, that's right.
26:34So how are we going to convince Archie that chair legs aren't a problem?
26:37Well, what I want to do is start with one chair, not moving, and build it up from there.
26:43To end Archie's fear...
26:46So, we've got a chair, to start with.
26:48Yeah.
26:49...he needs convincing, chairs are no threat.
26:52What we're going to do is, we'll pop him on lead.
26:55If at any point, he does go to bite the chair leg, we can prevent him from doing that.
27:00Yeah.
27:00If he doesn't react, it's really important that we reward him for making good decisions.
27:05Mm-hmm.
27:06That's always going to be, oh, good boy.
27:08What I'm really aiming for here is that we build this thing up, a chair that's moving slightly, a chair
27:14that moves a bit more.
27:15Maybe we're sat on the chair, so we're making it a bit more difficult as we go.
27:19No.
27:20Leg one.
27:22Overcome Archie's fear of an empty, static chair.
27:27Hey, Archie.
27:28Who's a good lad?
27:29Nothing wrong with that chair, is there?
27:30Good boy.
27:32Leg two.
27:33Gradually introduce movement.
27:39Hey, this is great.
27:43He's not bothered at all, is he?
27:44He's not bothered at all.
27:46Good boy.
27:49Yeah!
27:50He's a clever lad.
27:52I think the next thing is, why don't you take a seat.
27:55Okay.
27:56You operate the chair, I'll operate the dog.
27:59How about that?
27:59Come here, Archie.
28:01Right.
28:03Okay.
28:05Good boy.
28:06Good boy.
28:07That's it.
28:07And sit down again.
28:09Maybe a little shuffle backwards.
28:12All right.
28:13Good boy.
28:14Good boy.
28:15Oh, this is surprising.
28:16It is very surprising.
28:17But I'm not at a table.
28:19Exactly.
28:20Will the seat of Archie's problem...
28:22Right then, off to the table.
28:24...leave Graham's training...
28:26Should I have a seat?
28:28...without a leg to stand on?
28:32What I want you to do, is just...
28:34...just that far, a little oitch back.
28:37That's it.
28:39Good boy!
28:40Now he's got up, and he's...
28:41Boy!
28:42He was thinking of moving out of the way there.
28:44Good boy!
28:46So, shall I try and get up now?
28:47All right, yeah.
28:49That's it.
28:50Good boy!
28:51He's moved out of the way.
28:53Good boy!
28:56Was that a surprise?
28:57A real surprise.
28:58Because, normally, he would be straight in there attacking.
29:01It's a breakthrough.
29:03What do we normally do after we've got up from the table?
29:05Push the chair.
29:06Push the chair under.
29:07Yeah.
29:07Don't do it in a wanna.
29:08Okay.
29:09So, maybe two, three inches.
29:11Yeah.
29:11Let's see what he does.
29:12Good boy!
29:13Good boy!
29:15So, I'm going to take the lead off.
29:17So, if you sit down now...
29:19Okay.
29:21Oh, he looks at the chair.
29:22Good boy!
29:23Good boy!
29:25Good boy!
29:26That's it.
29:30Hey, we're on a winner.
29:32Clever boy, Archie!
29:33Yes, you are!
29:34Good boy!
29:35But Archie's toughest test is still to come.
29:39I think we've got something to show off to the family.
29:41I think we have.
29:42If his chair-chomping returns...
29:45So, I'm going to show you what I've done, and then I'd love you all to sit down one by
29:50one.
29:50When the family come together...
29:52You just need to be aware of where he is.
29:54Yes!
29:55Janet could be saying goodbye.
29:58Okay.
29:59And then...
30:00Sit down.
30:02Okay?
30:03To the dog she loves.
30:05So, there you go, my dog.
30:07There's your seat.
30:08I'm cute.
30:09That's it.
30:10Put it out.
30:11That's it.
30:13If you're shuffling a little bit at a time...
30:15A little bit.
30:19A little bit.
30:20Good boy!
30:21Good boy!
30:23Good boy!
30:24It's a remarkable turnaround.
30:28For the last two years, Archie's made mealtimes...
30:32Stop it, Archie!
30:34...chaotic...
30:35Enough! Stop it, turn it!
30:37...and dangerous.
30:38If I go over, that would be me finished.
30:42Now...
30:42Good boy!
30:44The family can look forward...
30:46Good boy!
30:48...to calm, safe...
30:49So quiet!
30:51...and peaceful dinners.
30:53What do you reckon, Barry?
30:54You've trained us very well, Graham.
30:56You've spotted my secret!
31:00This morning, you were worried you might have to let him go.
31:03I think you can keep him now.
31:06Really happy you came.
31:07Thank you very much.
31:09You're welcome.
31:11I'm going to have a custard cream!
31:14Thank you, Jamie.
31:15Thank you ever so much, Graham.
31:16Cheers!
31:16Thank you!
31:18Bye!
31:23Leaving Archie's feet firmly under the table, Graham's in Harrogate, continuing his quest for happy and healthy dogs.
31:32Hi, Graham.
31:33Hiya.
31:33I'm Rosie.
31:34And I'm Dan, and this is Knuckles, a four-year-old, hairless, Peruvian, Inca orchid.
31:40We were just wondering if there was anything specific we needed to be doing when grooming a hairless dog.
31:46Thanks, Graham!
31:48How do you groom a hairless dog?
31:50I know it sounds like a joke question, but I don't think it is.
31:55I think if you ask a professional groomer, they'll tell you there are things that you should be doing to
31:59care for a dog with no hair.
32:03Before introducing Knuckles to his grooming expert...
32:07Morning!
32:07Hello!
32:08Nice to meet you.
32:09Daniel and Rosie.
32:11Yes.
32:11Hello, nice to meet you.
32:12Hello, and Knuckles.
32:13Graham wants to meet Dan, Rosie, and their hairless hound.
32:18It's a Peruvian Inca orchid, then.
32:20Mm-hm.
32:20He's a rare breed.
32:21He is.
32:22You don't see many of them around.
32:23We've never seen another one.
32:24Not in the UK.
32:25Yeah.
32:25I've got to ask, why?
32:27Why a Peruvian Inca orchid?
32:29Well, it's because of me.
32:31I'm actually allergic to dogs.
32:33Ah.
32:33Whereas, he hasn't got any hair, and I don't seem to be affected with my asthma.
32:38Oh, I see.
32:39If anyone knows how to maintain Knuckles' skin...
32:43This is a good girl.
32:44This is a good girl.
32:45It's best-in-class Crofts winner, dog wellness author...
32:50What a clever game.
32:51...and award-winning groomer, Verity Hardcastle.
32:55Most people think when they're bringing the dog to the groomers, they're just making them look pretty.
32:59Morning, Verity.
33:00Morning.
33:01Boy, have I got a dog for you.
33:04But there's so much more to it than that.
33:06So, I've brought your hairless dog to groom.
33:07Funnily enough, they actually do need grooming.
33:10Right.
33:10Even though you wouldn't think so.
33:12We are looking at their skin, their coat.
33:14We're giving them a full-body MOT.
33:17Tell me, why have you come in to see me today?
33:20So, his skin changes between winter and summer.
33:23In the winter, it becomes paler.
33:26In the summer, he'll scratch a lot and over-lick.
33:29But also, where we would consider armpits, it starts to rub and it can get quite irritated for him.
33:35So, general care for it would be amazing.
33:38Yeah, sure.
33:39Have you ever felt it?
33:40Yeah, I have.
33:41And his skin actually feels quite nice.
33:43Some of them are quite clammy.
33:44The first thing to consider...
33:46So, they can get really greasy.
33:48..is keeping skin pores open.
33:51Because, obviously, they're secreting a lot of oil through their skin.
33:54When they're producing this oil, it's getting blocked in the pores.
33:57So, what we want to be doing is exfoliation.
34:00To exfoliate without stripping the skin's essential oils...
34:04So, this is an aloe vera and green tea mask.
34:07..a natural, gentle product is vital.
34:10These are just an exfoliating bath glove that we would use on our own skin.
34:15Yep.
34:16This is going to be really great for helping to rejuvenate the skin cells as well.
34:20Mm-hm.
34:21Take away any loose skin.
34:23And the perfect step just before we go into nourishing the skin.
34:27How often should we be doing this?
34:29So, you should be doing this once a week when you're doing your weekly bathing.
34:33While skin is moist...
34:35This is just going to help them dry quicker and also it's super snuggly.
34:39Right.
34:39So, do you want to put that on him?
34:41..keep it warm and comfortable.
34:43It's like a bathrobe.
34:44Oh, it's a snuggly boy.
34:46Oh, it's a snuggly, snuggly boy.
34:48Pores unclogged, Verity recommends targeted skin nourishment.
34:53So, this is a thicker balm, an organic coconut oil.
34:57Beginning with drier patches.
34:59So, I would use this more for high-friction areas.
35:03Armpits, elbows, pressure points, so more problem areas.
35:07Do you want to try it?
35:10Pull.
35:11You're trying to lick it off already, aren't you, Papu?
35:14Yeah.
35:15I'm loving this, Verity, because this applies to all dogs,
35:18not just hairless dogs.
35:19So, pads, elbows...
35:20Yeah, absolutely.
35:21Coconut oil.
35:22Yeah.
35:23I wouldn't apply this to the whole dog,
35:24because we don't want to block up those pores that we've unclogged.
35:27To nourish the rest of a dog's skin, choose a less clingy product.
35:33And then we have a really light liquid crystal.
35:35This is a light oil.
35:37You can buy this online at professional grooming suppliers.
35:40Okay.
35:40It's really light, isn't it?
35:41It's very light.
35:42It's like a silk, almost.
35:44Yeah.
35:44Because that won't clog up the pores.
35:46Exactly.
35:47Take your jacket off, I'm so sorry.
35:49He's so cosy in this.
35:50He is.
35:52I'm going to rub it through, warm it through my hands.
35:55Then I'm just going to...
35:56Just a very light touch to start off with.
36:00Enjoying that?
36:03He is enjoying that.
36:04He is, right?
36:04He is going.
36:06Finally, whether your dog is hairless or not...
36:09They'll need sun protection for sure.
36:12Sunscreen could save their lives.
36:15So, can you just use, you know, the sunscreen we've got in the cupboard?
36:18No.
36:19Human sunscreen has zinc oxide in it.
36:21Oh, yeah.
36:22So, that is going to be poisonous to the dog.
36:24So, we need to be getting dog-specific sunscreen.
36:27So, this is an SPF 50.
36:29Pet friendly.
36:31So, it's really important that we apply this to our hairless dogs.
36:35Because they don't have any coat protection.
36:36But also, we need to be thinking about dogs that are white as well.
36:40Because things like white boxes, staffies, especially when they've got that real pink pigmentation.
36:46Especially here.
36:47Yeah.
36:48They're super prone to sunburn and which also can lead to other problems like skin cancer.
36:55So, has that been helpful?
36:57Yeah, very much so.
36:58I mean, we live him to bits.
36:59We want to give him the best life.
37:00And so, yeah, that's really, really helpful.
37:03Well, he's a beautiful dog.
37:06Knuckles' skin might be in safe hands.
37:09Rio, please.
37:11But until Graham has got 15 stone Rio.
37:14Come on.
37:14Might be the heaviest dog I've ever worked with.
37:16To visit the vet.
37:18He'll get a few steps and he'll pancake down.
37:20Come on, kid. Rio.
37:22His week is far from done.
37:34Before his weekends, Graham's back in Yorkshire.
37:38Come on, Rio.
37:39Where 15 stone Rio's.
37:41Come on, Rio.
37:42Refusal.
37:43No, no, no, please.
37:44To visit the vet.
37:46Nathan thinks he can read vet.
37:48And he knows what vet is.
37:49But he can't read vet.
37:51Sure he can.
37:52He can't.
37:52He's a dog.
37:53Rio, please.
37:55Is a constant concern.
37:57It is a big worry like the future.
37:59We're praying that Graham can help us on this one.
38:03Rio does love.
38:04Straight to you.
38:05Straight to you.
38:07Going to the pub.
38:09Can I have his usual, please?
38:10Ha!
38:11No wonder he likes coming to the pub.
38:14Come on.
38:14Last time, Graham rolled out the barrel.
38:17Now, remember of energy.
38:19Come on.
38:20Hello, Lily.
38:21Hello, Rio.
38:21Hello, Rio.
38:22And bringing the pub home.
38:24Come on.
38:25Oh, you can do it.
38:26Was just the tonic to get Rio upstairs.
38:31Clubber boy.
38:32Yay.
38:33Clever lad.
38:35Today.
38:36Hey, up again.
38:37Hey, up.
38:37Nice to see you again.
38:38You all right?
38:39He's asking Cathy and Nathan.
38:41Cathy, darling.
38:41How are you?
38:42You all right?
38:43For the same again.
38:44I think we're going to keep that high energy up to get him moving.
38:48Pub energy, as I keep calling it.
38:49Yeah, yeah, yeah.
38:50Right.
38:50Let's get stuck in.
38:52Step one.
38:53Use turbo boosted encouragement to create the mood.
38:57Hello.
38:57Hello.
38:58To get him out of his van.
39:00Let's give it pub energy.
39:02Come on, Rio.
39:03Come on, Rio.
39:04Come on, Rio.
39:04Come on.
39:05Come on, big boy.
39:09Hey.
39:09Who's a clever boy?
39:10Hey.
39:11Oh, fantastic.
39:12That was good, wasn't it?
39:13It was very good.
39:14Good boy.
39:15It's that pub energy that keeps calling it.
39:17That's what does it.
39:19Step two.
39:20Ready to rock and roll?
39:21Yes, certainly.
39:22Yes.
39:22Come on, then.
39:23Keep the energy up.
39:23Come on, Rio.
39:24Come on, Rio.
39:24Come on, walkies.
39:25Come on, baby.
39:26Step to the vets.
39:28Come on.
39:28Come on, Rio.
39:30Come on, Rio.
39:30Hey, this is good.
39:33Come on.
39:34This is already further than we got last time.
39:36Yes.
39:36You're far further.
39:37Good boy.
39:38Keep going.
39:39Come on.
39:40Pub energy flowing.
39:42Come on, Rio.
39:43Brilliant.
39:43Rio doesn't read the signs.
39:46Come on.
39:47Fantastic.
39:48Come on, Rio.
39:49Come on, kid.
39:50But before Nathan and Cathy get their champagne moment.
39:54Here.
39:55No, don't go with him.
39:56Don't go with him.
39:57Don't go with him.
39:58He's on a winner, then.
39:59He twigs.
40:00He's not heading to the boozer.
40:02Gone.
40:03No.
40:03And he's thrown on the emergency brake, hasn't he?
40:05No, that's it.
40:06Yeah, yeah.
40:06He then went, go back to the van.
40:08Let's go back.
40:09Yeah, yeah.
40:10And then you've sort of fallen for it there, Nathan.
40:12Because you end up...
40:13I know he's a big, heavy dog, but you end up being dragged along with him.
40:15And you're sort of going with it.
40:17So he's then thinking, I'm winning, I'm winning, I'm winning.
40:19Right.
40:20So my thinking is this.
40:22That way?
40:23No.
40:23I don't care.
40:24If this takes two hours, we are not going that way.
40:29Yeah.
40:30Come on, kid.
40:32Rio's tantalizingly close to the surgery.
40:34Even this is the furthest we've ever been.
40:37Come on, Rio.
40:37Come on, then.
40:38Come on, Rio.
40:39Can one last burst of pub positivity...
40:42Come on, Rio.
40:44...bring this crawl to an end?
40:46Yeah.
40:47Come on, Rio.
40:48Come on.
40:49Come on, Rio.
40:52Come on, come on.
40:53Come on, Rio.
40:53Come on.
40:54That's amazing.
40:55Come on.
40:57Oh, good boy.
40:59Oh, Rio.
41:01First time he's ever been in a vet.
41:03Oh, lovely.
41:03I can't believe you've done it.
41:04Yeah.
41:05I can't believe you've done it.
41:06I really can't.
41:07You look a bit emotional, actually.
41:12Come on.
41:13Come on, Rio.
41:14Rio has only been seen by a vet in a car park.
41:18If he ever needs a major operation, we should don't know how we're going to do it.
41:22Now...
41:22Let's give it a go again.
41:23Let's prove we can do it again.
41:42All right.
41:43It is.
41:44Absolutely brilliant.
41:45I never, ever thought that would happen.
41:47Never.
41:47It's good, wasn't it?
41:48Yeah, absolutely brilliant.
41:49Really good.
41:49Yeah.
41:51I think the world has changed for Rio.
41:53I think it's opened up.
41:54And, er, for his mum and dad, well, they seem very happy.
41:59It's certainly going to change our lives.
42:01100%.
42:02100%.
42:07100%.
42:08At Kath's house...
42:10Good boy.
42:11Mealtimes are still loud.
42:13Good boy.
42:15But Archie's chair chomping is on the wane.
42:18Good boy.
42:19Why?
42:20In Worcester, Knuckles' skin has never looked better.
42:24Really good advice, especially the exfoliating.
42:27It's been a great help.
42:28Knuckles is happy.
42:30Aren't you?
42:31Yeah.
42:32In Sheffield, veganism is having its day.
42:35We're doing meat-free Mondays.
42:37Prashka and the pack are loving them.
42:39We may introduce another day a week too, so thank you so much for your help.
42:43And in Barnsley...
42:45Hiya, Graeme.
42:45Just to say thank you, a very big thank you, for sorting Rio out.
42:52Rio's climbing stairs...
42:53Clever boy!
42:55He's doing really well.
42:56...and discovering...
42:58He's now happily going into the vet.
43:00Well done, Rio!
43:02The vet is almost as fun as the boozer.
43:05There you go.
43:07Cheers.
43:08Bye.
43:08Bye.
43:08If you think your badly behaved dog could do with Graeme's help, then why not get in touch?
43:14Details can be found at www.channel5.com forward slash take part.
43:22Ziggy, no!
43:22Bye.
43:23Bye-bye.
43:25Bye.
43:35Bye.
43:38Bye!
43:49Bye!
43:51Where are we,
