00:00Did you know that part of your electricity bill could be funding a power plant that barely runs?
00:05I'm Keaton Peters, an energy reporter for Straight Arrow.
00:08The Department of Energy ordered five coal power plants to stay open
00:13after they were slated to shut down in 2025.
00:16Officials say this is necessary to provide enough power to the grid
00:20during winter storms or summer heat waves.
00:23Power companies now have to keep up payroll and finish deferred maintenance
00:27in order to keep these plants open.
00:30The move has cost over $200 million so far.
00:33Who pays for this?
00:34My sources said there's no doubt that household customers will be the ones footing the bill.
00:39Two companies have already asked for approval to pass those costs on to consumers.
00:44Not everyone thinks keeping the plants open is necessary to run the power grid.
00:48Do you want to know who's pushing back against the order?
00:51And how much energy have the power plants provided to the grid this year?
00:55I found the answers.
