00:02Inside an old Morley takeaway store, these women are upskilling both in and out of the kitchen.
00:15Beyond the Kitchen supports women, including migrants, refugees or asylum seekers,
00:20to overcome the challenges of working in hospitality.
00:23The main barriers are the language barrier, the cultural barriers,
00:26the stigma of working in an industry like hospitality.
00:30So this is very safe, trusting, inclusive, it's all women.
00:34The Multicultural Services Centre of WA offers a trauma-informed space
00:38for learning about hospitality, food safety and small business development.
00:43We do some functions where they organise the menu,
00:46they organise the costing, the budgeting, the entire process
00:52and that's where they cook their own cultural recipes.
00:56160 women set to benefit from the program over the next two years.
01:01I had a woman who came here who said she has never stepped out of a house.
01:06Her oldest son was 24 years old and she wanted to do something for herself.
01:11And she thrived and it is such a pleasure to see that they have some goals,
01:17some aim and that they can achieve it once they come here.
01:21Providing meals to community members and catering events.
01:25It just boosts my confidence in the kitchen and towards the different foods that I never tasted before.
01:33The experience has encouraged Sabah to grow her spice business.
01:37I've got, as an Australian, Ethiopian, I've got lots of, you know, spices tradition
01:44and I thought no one knows about my spices.
01:48So I thought, OK, let's bring it to the society.
01:50Participants empowered.
01:52Hopefully I build that confidence to open my page of catering or a food truck.
02:01Only two weeks I learnt a lot of things.
02:03I hope so.
02:05I finish two months, after that I'll open the business, inshallah.
02:07A recipe for success.
02:09Stay tuned.
