U.S. President Donald Trump signaled a softer approach toward China during remarks following his Beijing visit, hinting that Washington could reconsider sanctions on Chinese firms accused of purchasing Iranian oil. Trump revealed he discussed the issue directly with Chinese President Xi Jinping and said a decision could come within days. The comments mark a potential shift from the administration’s earlier “maximum pressure” campaign targeting Iran-linked oil trade.

00:00Would you consider lifting the sanctions on Chinese oil companies that buy Iranian oil?
00:04Well, we talked about that, and I'm going to make a decision over the next few days.
00:08We did talk about that.
00:09Do you think Xi felt stronger in his dealings with you than he did the last time that you were
00:16in China?
00:16We had a great relationship last time, until COVID came along.
00:18You know, I blame them for that.
00:20I said it was Wuhan, and I was right.
00:23And, you know, look, that was a strain on everybody, COVID.
00:27And so, you know, it affected our relationship at the time.
00:31But we always had a great relationship before that and after that.
00:35Now it's as strong as ever.
00:37I mean, I went over to where he lives, which is something that rarely happens.
00:41Were you there?
00:42Yeah, it was beautiful.
00:43It was amazing.
00:44People have never seen it before.
00:46It's amazing, actually.
00:47We had lunch.
00:49We have a great understanding.
00:50I mean, it's a very positive thing to have these two nations getting along.
00:55Mr. President, on Taiwan again, you said you were going to check with the president of Taiwan.
01:00But the 1982 assurances that President Reagan gave, said you would not,
01:05so the United States would not consult with China on arms sales to Taiwan.
01:11So it sounds to me like you have consulted with China.
01:14Well, I think 1982 is a long way.
01:16It was.
01:17That's a big, far distance to it.
01:19Did you dispense with that?
01:20No, I didn't say anything about it.
01:21But certainly, you know, he brought that up.
01:24He talked about that.
01:25I mean, obviously.
01:26So what am I going to do?
01:27I don't want to talk to you about it.
01:29Because I have an agreement that was signed in 1982.
01:32No, we discussed arms sales, too.
01:35What's his request?
01:37You discussed the Taiwan, you know, the whole thing with the arms sales.
01:40It was in great detail, actually.
01:43And I'll be making decisions.
01:45What letters would you like?
01:46You know, I think the last thing we need right now is a war that's 9,500 miles away.
01:53I think that's the last thing we need.
01:54We're doing very well.
01:55Would the U.S. defend Taiwan if it came to it?
01:57I don't want to say no.
01:58I'm not going to say that.
02:01There's only one person that knows that.
02:03You know who it is?
02:03Me.
02:04I'm the only person.
02:05That question was asked to me today by President Xi.
02:09I said, I don't talk about that.
02:11He asked you today.
02:13He asked you if you would send troops.
02:15He asked me if I defend them.
02:17I said, I don't talk about that.
02:18She tells him now.
02:19I don't talk about that.
02:20Did you talk to him about the cyber attacks that he's done in the United States or the MSS?
02:25I did.
02:26And he talked about attacks that we did in China.
02:29You know, what they do, we do, too.
02:31It's like the spying.
02:33They're talking about, oh, the spying.
02:34I said, well, we do it, too.
02:36We do it, too.
02:36Look, no, I'm talking about spying.
02:38I think the question was asked to me yesterday, I guess, what about the fact that China is spying in
02:44the United States?
02:45I said, well, it's one of those things, because we spy like hell on them, too.
02:50What about the fact that China is putting in the U.S. infrastructure code that they could use if you
02:56ever decided to come to the United States?
02:58Well, you don't know that.
02:59I mean, I'd like to see it, but it's very possible that they do.
03:03And we're doing things to them.
03:04I told them we do a lot of stuff to you that you don't know about, and you're doing things
03:09to us that we probably do know about.
03:11But we do plenty.
03:12It's a double, it's a double-edged note.
03:14Let's go again on President Xi.
03:16A couple of years ago, when President Biden met him in San Francisco, he was asked if he thought President
03:22Xi was a dictator.
03:23Do you think President Xi is a dictator?
03:25I think that President Biden was an incompetent president.
03:28He gave us the Iran nuclear deal, which allowed Iran to have a nuclear weapon within a matter of years
03:35from the time they said, I terminated it.
03:37If I didn't terminate that, Iran would have a nuclear weapon, then they would have used it within probably two
03:43years ago, three years ago.
03:44If I didn't go in with the B-2 bombers nine months ago, Iran would have a nuclear weapon, and
03:49nobody would be able to talk to him.
03:51By the way, they would have used it already.
03:53Do you think President Xi is a dictator or not?
03:56I don't think about it.
03:58He's the ruler.
03:59He's the president of China.
04:01I don't think about it.
04:03If you deal with what you have, I respect him.
04:07He's very smart.
04:08He loves his country.
04:09I respect him.
04:10Whether he's a dictator, that's for you to figure out.
