00:03From the most trusted journalists at Comedy Central, it's America's only source for news.
00:10This is The Daily Show with your host, Jon Stewart.
00:39Hey, everybody, welcome to The Daily Show.
00:41We got one for you tonight.
00:42My name is Jon Stewart.
00:44Great show.
00:44Andy Beshear will be here.
00:51We'll be talking about season two of his podcast.
00:53We'll also talk about his side hustle as the governor of Kentucky.
01:00But first, I got to tell you, what a weekend.
01:02Super Bowl, Cindy.
01:04And what a game.
01:06What a game it was.
01:07Bam.
01:08If you like high-scoring contests where the outcome is in doubt,
01:12till the final, suspenseful, climactic seconds, this was not the game for you.
01:22Slow.
01:24Grinding.
01:26It nearly took all the fun out of watching the Patriots lose.
01:40I was saluting the Patriots.
01:44And their one-year rebuild.
01:48But you know what?
01:50At least we had our snacks.
01:52That's what's the important part.
01:53I'll be honest with you.
01:54I went with the whole shebang.
01:56Six-foot hoagie.
01:57Wings.
01:58Nachos.
01:58Queso.
01:59Hot and cold running Budwash.
02:01Am I missing any of the classics?
02:03What would you have as a Super Bowl snack?
02:08I, you know, I am on a carnivore diet, so I just eat meat and ferments.
02:33Did this, did this mother ****er just say his diet is meat and ferment?
02:45he's he's so weird
02:50why does he always have to be so pluribus why
02:58carol would you like some ferments
03:01just as a normal non-alien species to another it is a superbowl party i don't care if your diet
03:12is meat and ferments what are you having at the superbowl party so i'm gonna probably have yogurt
03:30you're gonna have yogurt
03:35for the superbowl for the superbowl you're having yogurt you eat meat and ferments
03:44and for the superbowl you went ferments
03:55you know dude it's one thing to bring measles and polio back
04:01but i think i speak for the entire nation when i say if you ever show up at my superbowl
04:08party
04:10with a tub of yogurt
04:16you couldn't just muster up a little trunk bear jerky like what
04:24but even though the game was a grind your weird friend brought you a six-pack yogurt
04:36at least we all have the halftime show this year
04:48sponsored this year by ferments ferments
04:53it puts the fart in rfk
04:58this year's superbowl halftime show start benito antonio martinez bad bunny
05:06and he was out there and delivered a performance that was as they say in puerto rico quite good
05:14mr bunny killed it despite being trapped in an escapable sugarcane hedge maze
05:19he had lady gaga he had ricky morton he had the mandalorian he threw a wedding he held a model
05:29un
05:31and he even had the time to make a conhead service stop
05:36mid-concert
05:39it's okay he did it all
05:43just reboot the box and enjoy day nada
05:48it was joyful and infectious and
05:54the single worst halftime show in nfl history
05:58oh oh right right right i forgot i forgot
06:03um for a significant portion of americans
06:07everything that happens must uniformly be filtered through a particular
06:12magocentric worldview and judged on how well it conforms to that traditional vision
06:18which doesn't include knowing where the biblioteca is
06:23to get up there and perform the whole the whole show in spanish is a middle finger to the rest
06:30of america
06:31the majority of people in the audience had no idea what was being said
06:34is it too much to ask to put it in english
06:37not one word of english
06:38not one word of english
06:39one word
06:51here's here's some english for you
06:54who put thanos over here in the air fryer
07:05the fox decided they needed an actual buffalo wing to comment on the game
07:15dude seriously we all like to get sun but i mean
07:18i'm no dermatologist but
07:22be there tomorrow morning as early as you can be there
07:27it's like the guy's couch is one of those chicken rotisseries
07:31he's watching the game like tell me if i miss anything
07:39i've got like 10 of these
07:45seriously how many glizzies do you gobble
07:51before you become one
07:58but the point is this is america
08:03this is the super bowl
08:05is it too much to ask for a halftime show
08:08that this great nation
08:09can enjoy in its mother tongue
08:13it's why the good people at tp usa
08:16went through the trouble of putting on an alternative
08:19all-american halftime show that celebrated this beautiful country
08:23in the king's english we all share
08:38thank you
08:40was that so hard
08:41thank you
08:45thank you
08:47merriam and webster couldn't have put it better themselves
08:51regarding the up jumping of said boogie
08:55in so far as the diggy diggy diggy
08:59being
09:00a da bang a da bang
09:09i got that right
09:13but surely surely
09:16surely
09:16you didn't miss bad bunny
09:18just to watch an old man in acid washed jorts
09:22badly lip sync his way through a pre-taped
09:25bawa de ba performance
09:28surely the tp usa halftime show
09:30is a broader spectacle of americana
09:32to rival this most malevolent
09:34of bunnies
09:47looks like somebody dipped into the ferments
09:57i've never seen a cello player
09:59who looks like the porn version of a cello player
10:16i'm sorry let me let me skip forward a little bit
10:18there's got to be something else worth missing out on bad bunny for
10:30wait i'm wait
10:32it
10:33it isn't
10:36what exactly is so hard about
10:39being country nowadays
10:41i just want to catch my fish
10:44drive my truck
10:46drink my beer
10:57so far it sounds relatively easy
11:04am i missing a heavier lift
11:06i just want to cut my grass
11:09feed my dog
11:11he's wearing my boots
11:17sir i
11:18sir again i must insist
11:21all of these seem like
11:24achievable goals
11:26i mean you're wearing boots right now
11:31what exactly is it about being country that is so difficult
11:34if i tell my own daughter
11:37that little boys ain't little girls
11:45here we go
11:46i'll give the creek in hot water
11:50this can't see your ass work
12:00you're so brave
12:12people throw the word hero around
12:16but this is a bold opinion to hold in your genre
12:20sir
12:21really risking it all going up against country music's trans cartel
12:28by the way also if you did get cancelled
12:29really more time for the fishing and the mowing
12:33truck beer drinking
12:35and if i could just remind you
12:37really just the important thing
12:39feeding the dog
12:40again i can't
12:41i can't stress this enough
12:43in the song
12:44between the beer and the boots and the fishing
12:46really just feed your f***ing dog
12:50every day sir
12:51i know it's hard
12:56but you know what
12:57there was a bigger reason why tp usa had to do their own halftime show
13:01because the nfl's halftime show failed its one true mandate
13:04doing a a halftime show in all spanish
13:08is not unifying
13:10the super bowl halftime show
13:12divided in a time that's supposed to be a unifying moment
13:15they could have found somebody more uniting
13:17why the f***
13:19is it the super bowl halftime entertainer's job
13:24to unify the country
13:28in what world
13:30is that their job
13:34oh
13:35isn't there another person
13:39whose job description
13:41is much more along those lines
13:44let me ask you a question
13:49let me ask
13:52don't make me get my yogurts
13:58what did that person do
14:01to unify the country
14:03in a social media post
14:05president trump
14:06mocked bad bunny's performance
14:08calling it quote
14:09absolutely terrible
14:10one of the worst ever
14:11then adding quote
14:13nobody understands a word
14:15this guy is saying
14:16nobody
14:24i love that he thinks bad bunny
14:28is the one guy in the world
14:32that's fluent in spanish
14:36nobody understands it's a dead language
14:42you know
14:42the right has a lot of balls
14:46complaining that bad bunny
14:48didn't do enough to unify this country
14:50when you only found out a few days ago
14:52that puerto rico's a part of it
14:55and before you get
14:58and before you get your panties
15:06in
15:07another unifying pro tip
15:13might be to tell your guy
15:15to stop tweeting out racist slop
15:17during i don't know
15:19black history month
15:20the white house facing backlash
15:22over a racist depiction
15:24of the obamas
15:25contained in a video post
15:27on the president's truth social account
15:29at the end the video suddenly flashed
15:31to a clip of the obamas faces
15:32superimposed
15:33on the heads of cartoon apes
15:35oh ladies and gentlemen
15:37no before you get upset
15:38just know the racist video in question
15:40was not
15:42in spanish
15:46rest easy
15:48we're starting to heal
15:50i mean if 20 minutes of bad bunnies halftime show
15:55destroyed the country's unity
15:56i think even maga
15:57would be terribly upset
15:59that the unifier in chief
16:00would be sharing a video
16:01this
16:03racist
16:04or would
16:06i mean
16:06this is
16:07probably
16:08crazy
16:09but
16:09would they try and justify it
16:11it wasn't a video
16:12that was
16:13racist
16:14it was a video that ended
16:15with a racist thing
16:16which doesn't make
16:17that doesn't matter
16:19if you say
16:20the n-word
16:21at the end of the sentence
16:23it still ruins
16:25the whole sentence
16:27there are certain things
16:29in this world
16:32where
16:33there are certain things
16:34in this world
16:35where placement
16:36is less important
16:37than presence
16:38oh
16:39i don't have gonorrhea
16:40the tip of my penis
16:42has gonorrhea
16:46you're gonna
16:47you're gonna judge
16:49my entire penis
16:52by the gonorrhea
16:53tip
16:54who's the racist
16:55now
17:03can we at least
17:04all agree
17:05that the last part
17:06where he compared
17:07the obamas to apes
17:08was definitely racist
17:10at the end of the day
17:12human beings
17:13often point
17:14to other human beings
17:15and notice
17:15that they kind of
17:16look like this animal
17:17or that animal
17:19come on
17:21but there are
17:22you know
17:22certain
17:23anthropomorphic
17:24comparisons
17:24that historically
17:25have been used
17:26to justify
17:26oh i don't know
17:27slavery
17:28but go ahead
17:29i apologize
17:31for interrupting you
17:32i did know a girl
17:33that looked like
17:34a guy that looked
17:34like a monkey
17:35but he was white
17:36he was my friend
17:37joey
17:37and he was white
17:48so in terms of
17:49racist justifications
17:50he's blown right
17:51past the
17:52i have
17:53a black friend
17:56and moved right
17:57into the
17:58i have a white friend
17:59who looks like
18:01a monkey
18:05and poor joey
18:08poor white friend
18:10joey
18:12what a way to
18:13find out
18:13you've got
18:17what a way to
18:18find out
18:18you've got
18:19resting primate
18:20face
18:25poor mother
18:26joey
18:27sitting at home
18:31watching his
18:31watching his
18:32friend on
18:32television
18:35picking nits
18:36out of his
18:36wife's hair
18:41and then he's
18:42got to look up
18:43and be like
18:43what that guy
18:44say me
18:48joey mad
18:49joey throw
18:50poop at tv
18:53joey
18:54joey throw poop
18:55and jerk off
18:56and throw a demon
18:56and poop
18:57and then demon
18:58and then poop
19:09not even the
19:10cameramen have
19:11heard all this
19:12shit
19:14we're going off
19:15script tonight
19:24i gotta tell you
19:25this video was so bad
19:27there were actual
19:28republicans who
19:29criticized it
19:30senator tim scott of
19:31south carolina the
19:32senate's only black
19:33republican calling the
19:35president's post the
19:35most racist thing i've
19:36seen out of this
19:37white house
19:38wow
19:40by the way
19:40tim scott's face
19:42that is the face
19:43almost all republicans
19:44make in private
19:45when they've been
19:46told what trump
19:47said
19:51but seriously
19:52though
19:52senator
19:53is it the most
19:54racist thing
19:55that's come out
19:56of this white house
19:57well
19:58survey says
20:00it is
20:04congratulations
20:06you've won the
20:07opportunity to
20:07probably have to
20:08say this shit
20:08again next week
20:09but tim scott's
20:10criticism forced
20:11the president to
20:12delete the video
20:12which puts the
20:13president in an
20:14uncomfortable position
20:15a sophie's choice
20:15he deleted the video
20:16does he admit that
20:17he's racist
20:18or does he admit
20:19that he just made
20:20a simple mistake
20:21let's see how he
20:22threads the needle
20:23mr president a
20:24number of republicans
20:25are calling on you
20:26to apologize for that
20:28post is that
20:29something you're
20:29going to do
20:30no i didn't make a
20:30mistake
20:31so we're going
20:32with racist
20:35but of course
20:36in the example of a
20:38performer you don't
20:39particularly care for
20:40the upset is justified
20:42but in the example of
20:43the president of the
20:44united states
20:44sharing a racist
20:46meme
20:46well get over
20:48yourselves
20:49press secretary
20:50carolyn levitt said
20:51and i quote
20:52please stop the
20:53fake outrage
20:53and report on
20:54something today
20:55that actually matters
20:56to the american
20:56public
20:57which is
20:58crazy
21:00because at this
21:01point in the
21:03maga movement
21:03all they have
21:05is fake outrage
21:07olympic outrage
21:09american freestyle
21:10skiers are facing
21:11backlash following
21:12controversial comments
21:13made about representing
21:15the u.s. what many
21:16call anti-american
21:18rhetoric i'm disgusted
21:19by it it's so upsetting
21:20it's so inappropriate
21:21this guy hates his
21:22country he's clearly
21:23ashamed to be wearing
21:24the flag go back home
21:25to oregon in this case
21:27and march with antifa
21:28what sir think this
21:31through do you want
21:32our nation's greatest
21:33athletes joining antifa
21:35what
21:37this is not the
21:38solution you think
21:39sir you have
21:40abs of steel
21:41and powerful glutes
21:43grab a black
21:45bandana
21:45and get in the fight
21:48but oh my god
21:50i just first i'm here
21:51what did this olympian
21:51say
21:52it must be way more
21:54upsetting and outrageous
21:56than what the president
21:57of the united states
21:59racist memes are
22:01it brings up mixed
22:02emotions to represent
22:03the u.s. right now i
22:04think um it's a little
22:06hard um there's
22:08obviously a lot going
22:09on that i'm not the
22:10biggest fan of
22:23that that's the hate
22:24mongering that's the most
22:26laid-back mongering
22:30that was like the hacky sack
22:31of political condemnation
22:34it's like bruh
22:36i feel like
22:38right now
22:41the country shouldn't be
22:43swag it should be diggity
22:44dank
22:48and by the way maga
22:50you want to hear the good
22:52straight up anti-american
22:54shit talk to your boss
22:56our country is now a cesspool
22:59we are a nation in decline
23:00we're in a failing country
23:01we're in a country that's
23:02being laughed at
23:03we're a dumping ground
23:04we're like a
23:05we're like a garbage can
23:06our country is going to hell
23:08we have blood
23:09death and suffering
23:10on a scale once
23:11unthinkable
23:12a third world
23:13hellhole ruled by
23:14censors
23:15perverts
23:15criminals
23:16and thugs
23:19i mean after reading
23:21the epstein files
23:21it's hard to argue
23:22with the last part
23:24that part i
23:33anyway this mother
23:34better go back to
23:35oregon and join antifa
23:38so wait
23:39so why are you
23:41bothered by the
23:42i don't know man
23:42things feel pretty bad
23:44there and kind of
23:45conflicted
23:45and not bothered by
23:46the straight up
23:47anti-american
23:48vitriol
23:49from dear leader
23:50how about you
23:51wearing the flag
23:52uh you were
23:53representing your
23:54country
23:54yes
23:55and you can save
23:56your other comments
23:56for when you're not
23:57wearing the flag
23:58that's it's a flag
23:59son of i didn't think
24:00it's a flag
24:01freedom of speech
24:02very clearly states
24:02you cannot shout
24:03fire in a crowded
24:04theater or smack talk
24:05america while sporting
24:06any national symbols
24:07that's it's right
24:07so if i were to show
24:09you let's say a video
24:10of president donald
24:11jesus trump
24:12shitting on america
24:14and americans
24:15while sporting
24:17the very insignia
24:19that you deem
24:19so sacred
24:20what if i showed
24:21you a video like
24:22that i'm sure
24:23you'd just show
24:24them
24:25this country has
24:26gotten bloated
24:27and fat
24:27and disgusting
24:28oh and look
24:30what he's wearing
24:31bitches
24:34he's wearing the
24:35flag
24:36shitting on america
24:38and americans
24:40oh but that's a pin
24:42it's got to be cloth
24:43and sewn on
24:44and don't say
24:45oh yeah but donald
24:46trump wasn't overseas
24:46because we have
24:47video of donald trump
24:47insulting america
24:48while standing next
24:49to putin in finland
24:50and don't say
24:51well the skier
24:52was dry humping
24:52our beautiful flag
24:53no that was your guy
24:55so the point is this
24:58when did the right
25:00become such
25:04f***ing
25:06pussies
25:06when
25:10remember
25:142017
25:15remember what you
25:17hated about liberals
25:18oh perpetually offended
25:20safe spaces
25:21censoring free speech
25:23culture of victimhood
25:24remind you of anyone
25:26i can't go 15 minutes
25:29without listening to
25:31country music
25:32i need a separate show
25:33oh that skier
25:35triggered me
25:36i can't sleep
25:43not the best imitation
25:44but you know
25:45what i'm going for
25:49this whole culture war
25:51this weekend
25:52has really demonstrated
25:53one thing
25:54it's that for all
25:55of maga's triumphalism
25:57it's not a movement
25:58that seems confident
25:59in its position
26:00these people
26:01who control
26:02every branch of government
26:04are so triggered
26:05by someone singing
26:06in spanish
26:07for 20 minutes
26:07they need to create
26:08their own safe space
26:09alternative halftime show
26:11where trad bunny
26:12over here
26:13is singing songs
26:14about how he can't
26:16even enjoy
26:16sitting in a truck
26:17and drinking beer
26:18because he knows
26:19that somewhere
26:19out there
26:20there's a trans person
26:23it's actually
26:25f***ing
26:26pathetic
26:27the gap between
26:29the power you all
26:30wield
26:30the gap
26:35between the power
26:36you all wield
26:36and the victimhood
26:38you all claim
26:39is the real offense
26:40if you didn't
26:41actually have the power
26:42to do so much damage
26:44in our country
26:44i think we all
26:45dismiss it
26:46as a weak
26:47and pathetic
26:48pity party
26:50that's what
26:51you're throwing
26:53what kind of snacks
26:54would you have
26:55at a weak
26:56and pathetic
26:57pity party
27:02when we come back
27:03governor andy
27:04beshear
27:04will be joining me
27:05in the studio
27:05don't go away
27:17hey everybody
27:18in the daily show
27:18my guest tonight
27:19the two-term
27:21democratic governor
27:22of kentucky
27:22and the host
27:23of sirius xm's
27:24andy beshear podcast
27:25please welcome
27:26to the program
27:26governor andy beshear
27:27sorry
27:42how are you
27:43i'm good
27:44how are things down
27:46and now
27:47you're up in the northeast
27:48what are we dealing
27:49with weather wise
27:50in your beautiful home
27:52state of kentucky
27:52is it similar to
27:53the tundra
27:54that we have
27:55we got hit hard
27:56and we've gotten
27:56hit hard
27:57over and over
27:58this was our
27:5815th federally
27:59declared weather
28:00disaster
28:00since i became
28:01governor
28:02so we had about
28:030.8 inches of ice
28:04in part of our state
28:06we had about a foot
28:07of snow in the rest
28:08but we've worked
28:09really hard
28:09make sure
28:10to get it done
28:10so you've had
28:1115 weather
28:14related
28:14and a pandemic
28:16right
28:17and an airplane crash
28:18and a couple of
28:19helicopter crashes
28:20so we've been
28:20through the ring
28:20what's the common
28:21thread throughout
28:22all this
28:25you know
28:25who was the governor
28:26before you
28:27the common thread
28:28is that we band together
28:29and we push through
28:30son of a gun
28:31look at you
28:33now that's the thing
28:35so you know
28:36you are an anomaly
28:38in the world
28:39of the left
28:40you are someone
28:41who has accrued power
28:42what did trump
28:43win kentucky by
28:4431
28:45the second time
28:4631
28:46that's like
28:48putin number
28:49like that's
28:50in a democratic society
28:51winning by 31
28:52like that's insane
28:54and how
28:55and were you elected
28:56on that same cycle
28:57i was elected
28:57a year earlier
28:58by five points
28:59so not bad
29:00for a democrat
29:01in kentucky
29:01a 36
29:06and and if i may
29:08and this is just
29:09i'm just going
29:09from some videos
29:10i saw
29:10how did you cheat
29:14apparently very effectively
29:15nicely done
29:16no but what is
29:18explain that
29:19because that is
29:19there is certainly
29:20a percentage
29:22of prognosticators
29:23that would look
29:23at that and think
29:24what's the secret sauce
29:25so i think it's
29:26three things
29:27first i stand up
29:28for all my convictions
29:30and we push back
29:31against discrimination
29:32in any form
29:32but i spend 80%
29:34of my time
29:34on issues that matter
29:35to 100%
29:36of the people
29:37of kentucky
29:37that starts
29:38with your job
29:39and whether you make
29:40enough to raise
29:40your family
29:41it's your next
29:42doctor's appointment
29:42for yourself
29:43your parents
29:44or your kids
29:45it's the roads
29:46and bridges you drive
29:46the school you drop
29:48your kids off at
29:48and whether you feel
29:49safe in your community
29:50are you reading this
29:52i've said it once
29:53or twice
29:54i think a couple
29:54of times
29:55so you're basically
29:56saying like
29:56you've found a way
29:58to connect
30:00your leadership
30:01to their
30:03actual
30:05lives
30:05is that something
30:06that you think
30:08democrats at the
30:09national level
30:10have not been able
30:11to do
30:12is that the disconnect
30:13well we either
30:14haven't done it
30:15effectively
30:15or we haven't
30:16communicated it
30:17about it
30:18effectively
30:18you know
30:19in addition
30:20i'd say
30:21the thing
30:21that democrats
30:22have to do
30:22better
30:22is talk
30:23like normal
30:23human beings
30:25you
30:26thank you
30:32chuck schumer
30:33has started cursing
30:34if you could tell
30:35him to stop
30:37there is nothing
30:39i want to see
30:39less than that
30:40but you think
30:41about how
30:42this advocacy
30:43speak
30:43has pushed
30:44into our lingo
30:45and it had a
30:45it had a right
30:47meaning of trying
30:48to change stigma
30:48but you don't
30:49change stigma
30:49by changing words
30:50you change it
30:51by changing hearts
30:52and so a tough
30:54example in kentucky
30:55is we lost a lot
30:56of our friends
30:56to overdoses
30:57i don't know
30:58one family
30:59that says they
31:00lost a family
31:01member from
31:01substance use
31:02disorder
31:02they all say
31:03they lost
31:04from addiction
31:05because that word
31:06is that mean
31:07tough thing
31:08that takes people
31:08from us
31:09but you see
31:10it in other
31:10areas
31:11you see people
31:12saying food
31:12insecurity
31:13so when people
31:14are hungry
31:14they're hungry
31:15right
31:16or the newest
31:16one is called
31:17justice involved
31:19population
31:20say that again
31:21justice involved
31:23population
31:23i don't think
31:24i've heard that
31:24well listen
31:25we believe in
31:26second chances
31:26we've got a low
31:27recidivism rate
31:28but those are
31:29inmates
31:29right right right
31:30and you know
31:30what they call
31:30themselves
31:32inmates
31:32right right
31:33but do you
31:34think is that
31:35you know
31:35i certainly understand
31:36like there is a
31:37frustration with
31:38language and
31:38and those other
31:39situations
31:40but i would imagine
31:41if they felt like
31:42government was
31:43responsive in
31:44other areas
31:45they might not
31:46if they feel
31:46like that's all
31:47they're doing
31:48does that speak
31:49to and i don't
31:50say this in a
31:51bad way
31:51but the consultant
31:53class of
31:55politicians
31:55because don't
31:57they say you
31:57know like you
31:58say talk normally
31:59that's the thing
32:00they say about
32:01trump that they
32:01like so much
32:02that he talks
32:03you know this
32:04is how regular
32:05people talk
32:06and you're like
32:06are regular people
32:07terrible i don't
32:08think they are
32:09well he talks
32:10to you instead
32:11of at you
32:12right but that's
32:14different than
32:16colloquial language
32:17or uh calling
32:19something intellectual
32:20language it's
32:21connecting
32:22that's right
32:22however you do
32:23it and so i think
32:24the last piece is
32:25democrats are really
32:26good at the what
32:27you know we talk
32:28about uh policy
32:29point three bullet
32:30point four sub
32:31iii underneath
32:32consultant class
32:33yes right
32:34but we don't talk
32:34about our why
32:35enough not just
32:36what you're for
32:37but why you're for
32:38it what drives
32:39you what gets
32:40you up out of
32:40bed every day
32:41willing to deal
32:42with the mess that
32:43is politics right
32:44now right
32:45because you believe
32:45so strongly you're
32:47willing to do it
32:47is it that you've
32:49done those things
32:50or that there's
32:51been effective
32:52that the things
32:53you've done they've
32:54seen tangible
32:55results on
32:55oh it's it's
32:56definitely both
32:57i mean we've
32:58broken every record
32:59for private sector
32:59investment new
33:00jobs wages
33:02exports tourism
33:03and so people see
33:04their lives getting
33:05better and i think
33:07even if you go back
33:07back to 2024
33:08that last group of
33:10movable of voters
33:11that were undecided
33:12right believe that
33:13the vice president
33:14was distracted
33:14and that the president
33:16was talking about
33:17making things cost
33:18less
33:18right
33:18and so we have
33:20to make sure
33:21that the american
33:21people know that
33:22donald trump is making
33:23everything cost more
33:24he's decimating
33:25rural health care
33:27he's posting
33:28blatantly racist
33:29memes that he is
33:30not but if that
33:31doesn't connect
33:32through like
33:33convincing the
33:34population that he's
33:35posted i mean the guy
33:36came down an elevator
33:37i don't know 15 years
33:38ago and was like
33:39mexicans are rapists
33:41and once you cross that
33:43so he wasn't hiding it
33:44right it's not like he's
33:45been playing coy and we
33:47have to convince them
33:49what what i found
33:50is it feels like
33:52democrats have
33:54maybe lost
33:55a more accessible
33:56coherent
33:57leadership
33:58uh
33:59platform
34:00if that makes sense
34:02a coherent governance
34:03well i think
34:05it it does
34:05but the goal there
34:07is
34:07how are we
34:09working
34:09to better people's
34:10lives i mean right
34:11now
34:11look at the polling
34:12on the american dream
34:13people believe that if
34:15you work hard
34:16and follow the rules
34:17you still don't get
34:18ahead
34:18now we've got
34:19are they moved by
34:20the things you do
34:21when you
34:22when you build those
34:23jobs do you see a
34:24difference in the
34:25opinion polls
34:25so there's a town
34:26called henderson in
34:27kentucky
34:28it's a former coal
34:29mining town
34:30hard times and it
34:31was it was moving to
34:32the right
34:32uh i want to buy
34:33about 500 votes in
34:342019 i thought it'd
34:36be the last time
34:37ever uh right before
34:38the 2023 election
34:39we landed the
34:40cleanest uh greenest
34:42recycled paper mill
34:43in the country
34:44350 new jobs
34:45paying 40
34:46dollars an hour
34:47solid
34:47and i will never
34:48forget the the
34:49owner of that
34:50facility
34:51zoomed in for the
34:51groundbreaking
34:52and he said we're
34:53creating 350
34:54and then he used the
34:55term in coal country
34:56green jobs
34:58and you know what
34:59everybody did
34:59boo
35:00no they gave them
35:01a standing ovation
35:01because they pay
35:0240 bucks an hour
35:03right i thought
35:04when you said green
35:04they'd be all like
35:05we're leaving
35:05not not if it's
35:07not if it's helping
35:08them in their lives
35:09what is this environment
35:10that you're operating
35:11as because i imagine
35:12it's a really difficult
35:13balance that you have
35:14to uh balance those
35:16types of jobs with an
35:17administration that is
35:18clearly penalizing blue
35:21states now it might be
35:23different for you because
35:23you're in a red state but
35:25you're a blue governor
35:26have you felt any of that
35:28personal animus directed
35:29towards kentucky has has he
35:31withheld things from
35:32kentucky in the way that
35:34he's done it from other
35:35states well he's withheld
35:36things from everybody i've
35:38taken him to court to get
35:39money for for building
35:41resiliently after uh the
35:43all of the the tornadoes
35:44and the floods that we've
35:45had he tried to cancel a
35:46grant uh for a warning
35:48system for eastern kentucky
35:49uh when it floods i've gone
35:51to court uh with other
35:52governors to prevent him
35:53from sending the national
35:55guard from one state to
35:56another without the
35:57permission of that
35:58governor
35:58right that's your background
36:01right your background is in
36:03you're the attorney general
36:04of kentucky
36:05but we also took him to
36:06court over things like
36:07americorps what a great
36:08program that's right
36:09helping out
36:10and he just cuts
36:12but democrats democratic
36:14ags and governors took him
36:15to court
36:16one we're receiving that
36:17money red states aren't
36:20oh because they did oh so
36:22here's something i didn't
36:23even think of this the
36:24supreme court that's right
36:25had a decision where uh you
36:27can't grant universal
36:31injunctions that's right
36:32and so they thought they'd
36:33won that case but they
36:34haven't so democrats that
36:36have the courage to stand
36:37up to him to say that
36:38congress appropriated this
36:39money and you don't have
36:41a choice yes that money is
36:43flowing to our states and
36:44not those red states that's
36:47bold dude let me ask you
36:48this do you think that the
36:50legal system because i you
36:53know how many democratic
36:54governors are 23 we are yeah
36:56just under half just under
36:58you know what is it that
37:00they can do you know you
37:01see what he's doing in
37:02uh oregon you see what he's
37:03doing in chicago you see
37:04what he's doing in minnesota
37:05what can the cavalry of
37:08democratic governors do other
37:10than lawsuits to kind of
37:14form a coalition of people i
37:17don't want to say
37:17confederation that has a
37:21the connotations are not great
37:23but but how can they how can
37:25they force amplify to fight
37:28some of these really petty
37:29things that are being done
37:31well we do we communicate a lot
37:33and we all know each other well
37:35and what you see is us banding
37:37together to go to court but
37:38also to move the court of public
37:40opinion you see right now what's
37:43going on in minnesota right the
37:45videos the fact that we have an
37:47american body count for donald
37:49trump's deportation rights you see
37:52you see um his his other actions
37:54in other states you see the the
37:57picture that five-year-old child
37:58listen that is a child of god just
38:00like any other one right
38:03what is there any fiduciary is there
38:06a way that uh blue states can
38:07withhold something from the federal
38:09government to force his hand or
38:10anything tougher because they have a
38:11lot more money than we do right
38:13right but but what we can do is is
38:15push back in the ways you're seeing
38:17and some of them have been really
38:18effective that went in the supreme
38:20court on the national guard was
38:21critically important right right i
38:23think that plus the tariff case or
38:24the questions of will our supreme
38:26court hold up right will our judicial
38:29branch be a effective third branch
38:32of government is it hard you know
38:34the the democratic governors you all
38:36know each other but clearly there's a
38:37now we're moving more towards you
38:39know the presidential election is
38:41do you guys talk about that do you
38:43talk about that with like shapiro and
38:45newsom and all those guys like oh
38:46you're running i was thinking about
38:47running
38:48do you guys talk about that i haven't
38:50had that conversation uh we're really
38:52focused on 26 and we're focused not
38:55just you guys have not just discussed
38:57with one another whether you'll run
38:58for president
38:58no you're not sitting there you don't
39:00go out to coffee in the governor
39:03thing
39:03you mean to say are you doing it
39:04amen are you you're not going to
39:06iowa are you
39:06well john we're here are you doing it
39:10me yeah
39:13no one else
39:16who's who would be like which one of
39:18you do you think would be the best
39:19president and on the on the
39:25reasonable question
39:25all right we'll take we'll take the
39:28other we'll take the converse who's the
39:29worst one the governor who's the one
39:31where like you guys were the governor's
39:33conference and like the elevator opens
39:35and he's about to walk in and you just
39:37go or she and you just go oh
39:43ron de santis
39:46so smooth so smooth
39:52does the by the way i know how that
39:54would go you would go ron de santis
39:55there you go
39:56ron
39:58short joke all right
40:02the tariffs and all so uh uh the best
40:05laid plans of mice and men you know
40:07uh man builds god laughs what is it
40:10that you've done you've got these
40:11plants you've got these things how has
40:13the tariffs and the the chaos of
40:16trump's economic policy affect the
40:19things that you put into place because
40:21i know you did a lot of if i remember
40:23we talked on on the podcast with evs
40:26batteries you have big factories
40:27coming what happened to that
40:29well it's it's hit us and it's hit us
40:31hard now we are a state whose economy
40:33is still expanding but that's through
40:35hustle right most states have fallen
40:36into recession and tariffs are a big
40:39reason why it's the single worst
40:40economic policy of my lifetime it
40:42makes everything cost more for our
40:44family tell me how that affects on a
40:46state level
40:47what are the down downstream effects of
40:49those tariffs on kentucky think about
40:51it this way donald trump wants them to
40:52cause companies to build things in the
40:55u.s that aren't built in the u.s but if
40:57you're going to do that you got to
40:58import all the materials and all the
41:00equipment from a different country in
41:02other words doing what he wants to do
41:04costs that much more we were
41:06reassuring as a country the person who
41:09slowed it down if not halted it is
41:11donald j trump wow so what is are those
41:16are those plants still going forward and
41:18so we had two of the biggest battery
41:20plants in the world wanted open we
41:22had 1600 kentuckians working at it and
41:25listen they didn't care democrat
41:26republican or independent these were
41:28good jobs that they were going to be
41:30able to raise their family on that big ugly bill that's also going to
41:33devastate rural health care cut ev credits and and what happened
41:37that ultimately the partnership that was running those plants broke up now for stepping in it's
41:44taken both of them and i think we're still going to hit all those jobs doing storage batteries
41:48that will help our grid that will help us be more efficient but it's going to take
41:52maybe two more years and that's 1600 people that are being told for 12 to 24 months that they're
41:59not going to have that job they trained for and so it's one of my congressmen that helped push
42:04that bill through that is eliminating 1600 jobs in his district he called it a liberal pipe dream i
42:12want him to tell that to every one of the 1600 kentuckians that has to find a new job the
42:17the
42:17person see that's unusual a lot of times uh even when uh somebody might have a sort of dogmatic
42:25party line when it's a colloquial issue they'll they'll bend on it do you mind who is the congressman
42:29as brett guthrie but he's not the only one right this blind allegiance to trump has people doing
42:35things that that hurt their state have you seen it wayne where do you think most windmills are
42:40in the united states oh they're in red states windmills oh yes oh i was going to say holland
42:47you mean in the united states yeah and and what happened is are those now shutting down or they're
42:53having no they're they're pushing the projects to to halt making it that much harder right and these
42:58are states that brag to companies that they have a diverse energy portfolio so is this this is a plus
43:0431 red state they went for trump plus 31 have you seen anecdotally or otherwise an erosion of support
43:14or is it still just it's it's almost it's religious in its fervor still what are you seeing oh i
43:21think
43:22we're seeing the fever break and i'd look at it uh as a soybean farmer uh soybean farmer grows
43:27you're also a soybean farmer no i'm not no my my first job was was mucking horse stalls so i
43:34i am
43:34prepared for politics been there fella it ain't that ain't no fun so when you look at at our soybean
43:41farmers right now probably 90 plus percent voted for donald trump yet his tariff policy um his cutting
43:48of of usaid um his cutting of the farm to table programs for our schools have hit this group of
43:55people
43:55to the point of bankruptcy their market may never come back this person that they believed in that
44:01they thought was going to fight for them is about to ruin them and you're seeing people uh that's just
44:07speak out that's that's so hard that's first of all it's a hard life to begin with that's such a
44:12difficult farm jobs are so difficult so the tough part right now being governor is yes you see the
44:17numbers starting to move yes it's going to be a good midterm for democrats but at the cost of donald
44:24trump hurting the american people making their lives that much harder that's not something that
44:29i want to see happen wow i really appreciate it uh i i give you great respect i hope to
44:34come
44:34visit you in the great state of kentucky someday i promise you i will have a better menu than rfk
