00:00Have you ever read something in the Bible that made you stop, re-read, and whisper to yourself,
00:05wait, did I read that right? What if I told you there's a passage buried in the Psalms
00:11that speaks of God standing among other gods? Yes, other gods, not idols, not metaphors,
00:19but divine beings summoned before the God of all creation, standing in judgment.
00:25Psalm 82 isn't just a song. It's a courtroom scene in heaven. It's where God calls out corruption,
00:32not on earth, but among the gods themselves. What are these beings? Are they angels? Demons?
00:38Are they ancient rulers? Celestial kings? Are we somehow connected to them? And why is God angry?
00:48This Psalm doesn't just invite us to read, it dares us to understand. And once you do,
00:54you'll never see spiritual warfare the same way again. So get comfortable, because we're going
00:59deep into the unseen world, into the divine counsel, into God's own throne room. And what he says there
01:06will shake your soul. But first, if you love diving into hidden, mysterious, and deeply spiritual corners
01:14of the Bible, then you're in the right place. This is Bible Mysteries, where we don't just read
01:20scripture, we uncover it. Let's be honest. Most people have never heard a sermon on Psalm 82.
01:27It's not one of the go-to psalms people quote when they need comfort or encouragement. But this short
01:33eight-verse chapter might be one of the most controversial and revealing passages in the entire
01:39Bible. Let's read it together. Slowly, carefully.
01:44God has taken his place in the divine counsel. In the midst of the gods, he holds judgment. Psalm 82
01:511 ESV. Let's pause right there. God in the divine counsel. What does that even mean? This isn't
02:00metaphor. The Hebrew word used for God here is Elohim. And interestingly, the same word is used for
02:07gods in the second half of the verse. Elohim has taken his place in the counsel of El. In the
02:13midst
02:13of the Elohim, he holds judgment. Wait, Elohim standing in the midst of Elohim? This is not
02:19polytheism. The Bible doesn't teach multiple ultimate gods. But what it does describe here is
02:25something bigger than we usually imagine. God, the Most High, is not alone in the spiritual world.
02:31He rules over a heavenly court, a divine assembly of other spiritual beings. Think about that.
02:37God doesn't need counselors. He doesn't need help. But he chooses to govern the cosmos with a divine
02:43administration. This concept appears other places too. In Job 1, Satan walks among the sons of God
02:50who present themselves before the Lord. In 1 Kings 22, the prophet Micaiah sees a vision of God on his
02:57throne, surrounded by spirits deliberating over Ahab's fate. In Daniel 7, the Ancient of Days is seated
03:05with thousands upon thousands ministering before him. So what is Psalm 82 showing us? It's the day the
03:12King of Heaven calls a meeting. And it's not just any meeting. It's a trial, a judgment. God is holding
03:19court and the gods are in trouble. We have to ask, who are these gods? What did they do? And
03:27what is God
03:27about to say to them? Stick with me, because what comes next is where everything shifts.
03:35Let's revisit that first verse again. God stands in the divine council. In the midst of the gods, he holds
03:41judgment. So let's ask the big question directly. Who are these gods? Now first, let's be crystal clear.
03:48These are not idols. They're not statues made by human hands. And they're definitely not imaginary.
03:54The Hebrew word used for gods is Elohim. And here's where it gets interesting. Elohim doesn't
04:00mean God like we think it does. In our modern language, God, capital G, usually refers to one
04:07all-powerful, all-knowing creator. But in ancient Hebrew, Elohim was a category title, not a name.
04:13It referred to any being that lived in the spiritual realm. So that includes Yahweh, the Most High God,
04:20the Elohim of Elohim, angels, spirits of the dead, demons, and yes, members of the divine council.
04:29So when Psalm 82 says God is standing among the gods, it means he's standing among other spiritual
04:35beings, those he appointed to roles of governance, judgment, and watchfulness over the nations.
04:42This might sound strange, but the Bible hints at it in several places.
04:47Deuteronomy 32. The nations were divided among the gods. Look at this powerful verse.
04:54When the Most High gave to the nations their inheritance, when he divided mankind,
04:59he fixed the borders of the peoples according to the number of the sons of God.
05:03Deuteronomy 32.8. ESV. This refers to the Tower of Babel moment, when humanity tried to unite and
05:11build a name for themselves, and God scattered them across the earth. But here's the twist.
05:17When he scattered them, he assigned divine beings to oversee the newly formed nations.
05:22It's like God said, fine, if you won't worship me, then I'll put you under the rule of lesser beings.
05:28But I will reserve one nation for myself, Israel. And so the nations were divided,
05:34each under a spiritual authority, members of the divine council.
05:38They were supposed to watch, guide, protect, and report back to God. But they didn't.
05:44Instead, they rebelled. They twisted justice. They craved worship. They influenced kings.
05:51They set themselves up as false gods. This isn't myth. It's cosmic rebellion.
05:57And that rebellion is exactly what brings us back to Psalm 82.
06:01Because now, the judge has had enough. The gavel is coming down.
06:06Let's go straight to the core of Psalm 82.
06:09Here's what God says to these Elohim, the spiritual rulers, the ones he placed in authority,
06:15the ones who failed.
06:17How long will you judge unjustly and show partiality to the wicked?
06:22Psalm 82, 2.
06:24Whoa, God is angry. And not at humans. Not here.
06:28He's angry at divine beings.
06:30Why? Because they've twisted justice. Think about that.
06:35God assigned these beings to govern the nations, to watch over the helpless, to defend truth.
06:41And instead, they chose to favor the wicked.
06:44Can you feel the weight of that question?
06:46How long will you judge unjustly?
06:49It's like God has been watching, waiting, patiently.
06:53But now, he speaks.
06:56And his voice cuts like thunder.
06:58This isn't a casual reprimand.
07:00It's the holy fire of a righteous judge burning with disappointment.
07:05And he doesn't stop there.
07:07Give justice to the weak and the fatherless.
07:10Maintain the right of the afflicted and the destitute.
07:13Rescue the weak and the needy.
07:14Deliver them from the hand of the wicked.
07:17Psalm 82, 3-4.
07:19Do you see his heart?
07:21God's not just concerned with divine failure.
07:24He's defending the broken.
07:25He's saying,
07:27You were supposed to protect the weak.
07:29You were supposed to stop evil.
07:31Not enable it.
07:33You were supposed to reflect me.
07:35And you didn't.
07:36That hits hard, doesn't it?
07:38And here's the deeper truth.
07:39This isn't just a supernatural reprimand.
07:42It's a reminder that God has always cared about justice.
07:45Even from the highest realms,
07:47His heart has always bent toward the orphan, the widow, the outcast.
07:52So when His appointed rulers, spiritual or human,
07:55turn their backs on the vulnerable,
07:57He calls them out.
07:58Now we come to the breaking point, the divine verdict.
08:01They have neither knowledge nor understanding.
08:04They walk about in darkness.
08:06All the foundations of the earth are shaken.
08:09Psalm 82, verse 5.
08:11This is chilling.
08:13God is saying,
08:14They're blind.
08:15They're foolish.
08:16They've corrupted the system so badly
08:19that the very foundations of the world are trembling.
08:22Do you feel that?
08:23When spiritual rulers fail,
08:25it doesn't just affect the heavens.
08:27It affects earth itself.
08:29Corrupt leadership,
08:30spiritual or political,
08:32always sends shockwaves into the lives of the innocent.
08:35But then comes the line that changes everything.
08:38I said,
08:39You are gods,
08:40sons of the Most High,
08:42all of you.
08:42Nevertheless,
08:44like men you shall die,
08:45and fall like any prince.
08:47Psalm 82, 6-7.
08:50Let's pause.
08:51This is huge.
08:51God reminds them,
08:53Yes, you are Elohim.
08:55You were made sons of the Most High.
08:57I gave you power.
08:58I gave you a throne.
09:00But now,
09:01you will die like mortals.
09:03You will fall like any earthly ruler.
09:05This is cosmic demotion.
09:07It's like he's saying,
09:08You thought you were untouchable,
09:10but now you'll be stripped of your glory.
09:12You'll fall,
09:13just like those you oppressed.
09:15This is not just divine judgment.
09:18It's a prophecy.
09:19These rebellious spiritual rulers,
09:21once part of God's heavenly staff,
09:24are being cast down.
09:25And many scholars believe this ties into future judgment,
09:28where rebellious powers and principalities will be cast out forever.
09:33Let's go back one last time to Psalm 82.
09:37We've walked through the mysterious opening scene,
09:40God standing in the midst of other gods.
09:43We've learned who those gods are,
09:46spiritual beings,
09:47part of his divine counsel,
09:50once entrusted with the nations.
09:52We've heard the trial,
09:53his holy fury as he rebukes their injustice.
09:56And we've witnessed the verdict,
09:58you were gods,
09:59but now you'll fall like mortals.
10:01But now,
10:03and the psalm ends with a cry,
10:05a desperate,
10:06bold,
10:06beautiful cry.
10:18Arise,
10:18O God.
10:19It's a plea for God to take back the nations,
10:22to reclaim what was once handed over to corrupted powers.
10:26It's the cry of the broken,
10:28of the oppressed,
10:29of the ones longing for justice that lasts.
10:31And it's more than poetry,
10:33it's prophecy.
10:34Because hundreds of years after this psalm was written,
10:38something happened.
10:39God did rise.
10:41God did come.
10:42But not as fire,
10:44not with armies.
10:45He came as a man,
10:47a carpenter,
10:48a teacher,
10:49a sacrifice.
10:50The word became flesh and dwelt among us.
10:53John 1 14.
10:55And when Jesus walked the earth,
10:57he didn't just heal bodies.
10:59He didn't just forgive sins.
11:01He began to confront the very spiritual forces
11:04Psalm 82 talked about.
11:06Every time he cast out a demon,
11:09every time he rebuked a principality,
11:11every time he said,
11:12the kingdom of God is at hand,
11:14he was taking back what was stolen.
11:16He was reclaiming the nations.
11:18And then he died on a Roman cross.
11:21It looked like defeat.
11:23But three days later,
11:24God rose.
11:26The cry of Psalm 82,
11:28Arise,
11:29O God,
11:29where it was answered at the resurrection.
11:31Jesus stepped out of the tomb with all authority in heaven and on earth.
11:35And what did he say?
11:36Go therefore and make disciples of all nations.
11:39Matthew 28 19.
11:41There it is again.
11:43The nations.
11:44Psalm 82 ends with a cry.
11:46God,
11:47the nations have fallen into darkness.
11:49Rise and reclaim them.
11:51And Jesus says,
11:52I have.
11:52Now go,
11:54bring them home.
11:54This isn't just theology.
11:57This is reality.
11:58Right now,
11:59we live between two worlds.
12:00The fallout of the divine rebellion and the reign of the risen king.
12:05The corrupt powers.
12:06They're still active.
12:08We see it in war,
12:09injustice,
12:10cruelty,
12:12greed,
12:12oppression,
12:13but we also see something else rising.
12:16The kingdom.
12:17Every time you forgive instead of hate.
12:20Every time you love the least and lift up the broken.
12:23Every time you pray,
12:25proclaim truth and live like Jesus.
12:27You are joining heaven's rebellion against darkness.
12:31You're part of the answer to Psalm 82.
12:33Because the final words of the Psalm aren't about the gods.
12:37They're about God.
12:38Arise,
12:39O God.
12:40And he did.
12:41And he is.
12:43And he will.
